A British man died and six people were injured after a yacht ran aground on rocks off the coast of Italy, possibly as it tried to avoid crashing into another boat.
The 63-year-old owner of the 70ft boat - whose name has not been released - suffered a heart attack after the vessel crashed in waters near the Sardinian seaside resort of Porto Cervo on Sunday night, according to Italian media.
Authorities believe the "Amore" yacht had been sailing parallel to another boat when, for reasons that are unclear, it veered away suddenly and hit rocks near the island of Rocche, south of the Li Nibani islands.
The man was reportedly thrown into the water and rescued by a boat flying under the Maltese flag which was nearby.
With the assistance of the coastguard he was taken in by medical staff but they were unable to revive him.
The other six people who had been aboard the "Amore" were rescued by a third boat and transported to the Porto Cervo port.
Four were taken to the emergency room, two in serious condition, Italian media say.

Tributes have been paid to a millionaire businessman after his death in a yacht accident in Italy, including by “heartbroken” TV star friend Richard Hammond .
Dean Kronsbein, the founder of the Ultrafilter Medical mask company in Ross-on-Wye , was on board the 70ft yacht Amore with his wife and daughter when their boat crashed into rocks off the Sardinian coast on Sunday.
Mr Kronsbein, 61, was reportedly pulled from the water at Il Nibani, near Porto Cervo, but pronounced dead at the scene, while his wife Sabine, 59, and daughter, Sophia, 27, were seriously injured.
The businessman, who shared a passion for cars with the Grand Tour and former Top Gear star, pledged to give away hundreds of thousands of medical-standard masks at the height of the Covid crisis, including in his home town.

Mr Hammond, who attended a Bentley Drivers Club party at Mr Kronsbein’s Cubberley House home in Walford just last month alongside Prince Michael of Kent, told MailOnline: “I’m genuinely shocked at this heartbreaking news.
“He really was a larger-than-life character, and I know people say that a lot, but he really was, and the world needs more people like him.
“He was a kind-hearted, jovial person who wished for others to have a good time when they were around him. He was also a shrewd businessman. Who for goodness sake opens factories in Ross-on-Wye?
“I just can’t believe I won’t see him again in his colourful waistcoat and looking at his pocket watch – the last time I saw him was a couple of weeks ago at the party he hosted at Cubberley House,” added Mr Hammond, who said they shared “a love of cars”.
“I’m just heartbroken for his family, they are tremendous people and I just wish Sabine and Sophia a speedy recovery.”
A family spokesperson said he was a “much-loved and respected family man, friend and business colleague”.
In a statement, they added: “It is with great sadness we can confirm that Dean Kronsbein has been killed in a boating accident.
“It is a tremendous shock and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him.”
Ross-on-Wye town mayor Cllr Ed O’Driscoll posted: “I was deeply shocked to learn of the sudden death of local businessman Dean Kronsbein in a yachting accident off the coast of Sardinia.
“I would like to offer my deepest condolences to his family as they come to terms with this terrible news.”
A Bentley Drivers Club spokesperson posted on Tuesday: “The Bentley Drivers Club is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Dean Kronsbein in a boating accident. Our thoughts are with Dean’s family at this difficult time.”
One owner added: “Absolutely shocked and devastated. The world has lost one of its true characters.
“Flamboyant, eccentric, generous and kind. A friend to me and a friend to Bentley, I send love to his family, he will be missed by many I’m sure.”
Port of Olbia Coastguard commander Francesco Colarullo told MailOnline: “The damaged boat was towed back to Porto Cervo and has now been seized by the local prosecutor while the investigation into what happened exactly continues.
“It’s possible speed may have been an issue and we know that other vessels were in the area at the time and the accident may have happened while evasive action was taking place.” It was reported that the captain of the yacht had changed course to avoid another boat at the time of the accident.
A spokesperson for the Foreign Office said: “We are providing support following a maritime accident in Sardinia, including to the family of a dual national who has died. We are in contact with the local authorities.” It is understood that his son Dustin has flown out to Italy to support his mother and sister.
Mr Kronsbein, who had German and British dual nationality, moved to the area some five years ago, and lived at the former home of internationally-renowned singer and musician Roger Whittaker.
He founded Ultrafilter at Ross-on-Wye’s Alton business park last year, with Grand Tour and former Top Gear star Mr Hammond, who lives in nearby Weston-under-Penyard, attending the September launch.
Mr Kronsbein pledged to give away thousands of masks to those who needed them as part of his Great British Mask Giveaway campaign, including Ross-on-Wye and Grimsby where he grew up.
Staff at the business, which was shut this week, were devastated at the news of his passing.

A British man who died after a luxury yacht sailing off the coast of Italy crashed into rocks has been named as a millionaire company owner.
Dean Kronsbein, 61, was on board the vessel with his wife Sabine, 59, and 27-year-old daughter Sophia on Sunday before the captain reportedly moved to steer clear of another boat.
He was pulled from the water but pronounced dead at the scene despite the efforts of medics, according to local media.
Authorities said the man suffered fatal injuries when the 70ft Amore yacht collided with rocks off Porto Cervo, Sardinia.
Mr Kronsbein's wife and daughter sustained serious injuries.
They are understood to have been taken to a hospital and later moved to a specialist unit in the city of Sassari.
Family lawyer Egidio Caredda told MailOnline : "As you can imagine this has been a terrible shock for the family.
"I was contacted by Mr Kronsbein's son to help them with the situation, and I am giving them all the assistance I can.
"The local authorities are still investigating the exact circumstances and we will also be speaking to witnesses to establish what happened."
He added that Mr Kronsbein's son, Dustin, flew out from England and has been with his mum and sister while they receive treatment.
The captain of the Amore, Mario Lallone, is understood to be under investigation.
Witnesses, including four friends of Mr Kronsbein on board the yacht and rescuers, will also be questioned.
Mr Kronsbein was the founder and chairman of Ultrafilter Medical - a multi-million pound company which manufactures face masks for NHS workers.
Earlier this year, Grimsby Live reported on his mission to donate 100,000 face masks to locals, as part of his Great British Mask Giveaway campaign.
Speaking of living in Grimsby until he was 17, he said at the time: “We didn’t have a lot and I started working on a local farm, picking potatoes during the school holidays, to earn extra money.
"In those days, we were allowed to take as many potatoes as we wanted to home for our families and I quickly spotted an opportunity to create a home-delivery service for local housewives, taking orders for different types of potatoes before delivering them to their door on a pedal bike I bought to get me to the farm and back.
“I’ve never forgotten how difficult those times were and, when I returned to the UK with my family in 2017, I wanted to give something back."
Last month, he hosted a party for the Bentley Drivers Club at his country home near Ross on Wye, with his close friend and Top Gear star Richard Hammond attending, as well as Prince Michael of Kent.

Yacht crash in Med kills Briton
A British businessman died after being thrown overboard when his yacht hit rocks in the Mediterranean while trying to avoid another boat.
Dean Kronsbein, 61, was rescued by a yacht owned by the family of the former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi but died before reaching hospital.
Kronsbein’s wife Sabine, 59, and daughter, Sophia, 27, were seriously injured when the 70ft Amore crashed off the luxury resort of Porto Cervo in Sardinia on Sunday.
The vessel was approaching a narrow passage between the mainland and the granite rocks of a low-lying island. Local reports suggest the captain took evasive action to avoid another boat. It is unclear whether the Amore, which had its bow ripped off in the crash, was owned or chartered by Kronsbein.

A British tourist died from a heart attack he suffered after being thrown into the ocean from a luxury yacht when it crashed into rocks off the coast of Italy yesterday.
The 63-year-old was riding aboard 70ft motor yacht 'Amore' - which he is thought to have owned or chartered - around 8.40pm Sunday near the Il Nibani islands, Sardinia, when the accident happened.
The ship's captain is thought to have been trying to avoid another vessel when he slammed into the rocks, sending the British man overboard and injuring all six others on board - two of them seriously.
Two new images have laid bare the terrifying extent of the damage, showing how the bow of the boat was torn completely off by the force of the impact.

Nearby boats alerted coastguard to the crash, who arrived to find the Briton alive but unconscious.
A passing Maltese yacht volunteered to take him back to shore but he died en route.
Coast guards transported the rest of the wounded back to Porto Cervo, where two of them were taken to hospital in serious condition, La Stampa reported
The remaining four passengers also received emergency treatment.
The 70ft yacht was towed off rocks by coastguard vessels and impounded while an investigation is carried out.
Coast guards have also sealed off the area where the crash happened until the investigation is completed.
An autopsy is expected to be performed today.
One source said: 'The theory is the boat that ran aground was trying frantically to steer out of the way of another which didn't have right of way and she ended up on the rocks.'
One bystander on social media said: 'Five ambulances around a boat last night at Porto Cervo which was towed in. Doesn't look good.'

Vessels are showed moored in Porto Cervo late last night after the stricken craft was towed back to shore, where it was met by emergency services
The crash happened near a set of islands called Il Nibani, which are around two miles off the coast from Porto Cervo, Sardinia
The MY Amore is registered in the Italian port of Monfalcone near Trieste. However, it is unclear whether the dead Briton had chartered the vessel or owned it.
A picture of the rocks struck by the Amore was released by coastguards and white paint from her hull was clearly visible on the surface of the stones.
Today coastguard commander Francesco Colarullo told Mail Online: ‘The damaged boat was towed back to Porto Cervo and has now been seized by the local prosecutor while the investigation into what happened exactly continues.
‘It’s possible speed may have been an issue and we know that other vessels were in the area at the time and the accident may have happened while evasive action was taking place.
‘Every effort was made to save the life of the British man but there was nothing that could be done and he was unconscious when he was recovered.
‘The alarm was raised by the Amore with a mayday and they reported they were taking on water after striking rocks and a rescue operation was immediately launched.
‘Two coastguard vessels were involved as well as several other pleasure boats in the area at the time.’
A spokesman for the UK Foreign Office said: “We are providing support following a maritime accident in Sardinia, including to the family of a dual national who has died. We are in contact with the local authorities.”

70 foot yacht guide: finding your perfect yacht.
- June 18, 2019
The 70 foot yacht range often represents a demarcation in yachting. Vessels below this size range are often owner-operated whereas once yacht owners get into the 70 foot range, owners typically do not operate the yacht themselves. The 70 foot yacht is also just shy of what most consider to be the superyacht category. For instance, Boat International tracks superyacht sales and production data of yachts worldwide that are at least 24 meters in length (78-79 feet).
As the yacht size increases, the complexity of the purchase can also increase. While we often still begin with general use case questions such as what the yacht will be used for, how many guests should it accommodate and where do you plan to travel with the yacht, there are other important elements to consider when purchasing a 70 foot yacht. Considerations such as build quality, yacht type, cruising speed, propulsion options and more are all important elements to thoroughly examine.
Understanding the various yacht types is key to matching the right 70 foot yacht to your needs. Express yachts (can be referred to as express cruisers or sport cruisers) typically refer to yachts with a single deck above the hull and a living space below deck. These yachts often catch the eyes of onlookers as they are sleek and sporty.
Express yachts can be further grouped by looking at the hard top or enclosure. Typically the hard top express yacht either offers a semi-enclosure or full-enclosure for the operator. An open express yacht is different, however, in that it has maximum space for sun with little to no shade on deck. The open express can sometimes be referred to as a “Mediterranean” style yacht.
The flybridge or sedan bridge yacht refers to a yacht that includes an additional space above the main deck. This additional level can include seating and control station. Often times since the flybridge above is present, the main deck will have an enclosed space. The flybridge itself can be open air or enclosed.
Interior Layout
When yachts get into the 70 foot range, the interior layout can include a wide variety of options to suit your particular yachting lifestyle. Yachts in this range often have a spacious main deck salon with excellent seating, dining and entertaining spaces. Down below, the yachts will often have four or more cabins plus crew quarters. Newer yachts feature impressive full beam master bedrooms that come with remarkable spaciousness and the latest amenities. Quite often, a flybridge includes additional seating and control station.
Finishes and interior designs can vary widely depending on the model and age of the yacht. Commissioning a new yacht build of course means that owners can provide input and select particular finishes and features to meet their needs and tastes.
Considerations When Buying A 70 Foot Yacht
If you’re relatively new to yachting, it can be good to get some experience. Taking time to charter a yacht in various destinations can help you narrow down what yacht you wish to buy. Getting familiar through actual use of different yacht types can be very helpful. What features and amenities are important to you? What kind of crew do you anticipate needing? Are you looking for a smaller, more easy-to-operate yacht or are you looking for the most luxurious yachting experience while cruising longer distances? Experience is truly the best way to get closer to accurate answers to these questions.
Understanding your estimated budget for a yacht purchase is a crucial element in narrowing down your options. While understanding that there is always a bigger and more expensive yacht, identify a price range that you are comfortable with while also factoring in crew, maintenance and operating expenses.
Once you identify the yacht type and price range, with the assistance of a yacht broker, you can begin identifying potential options. If considering used yachts, buyers will always encounter the trade-off between age and size. A newer and smaller boat can often cost the same or more than a larger vessel with more years. Of course, newer boats may have less maintenance and upkeep costs while also providing updated technology and features. It’s at this point where an experienced yacht broker can really provide tremendous value. Understanding your needs and budget, a yacht broker can provide excellent advice on selecting yachts to target for purchase that will lead to years of enjoyment and minimal stress.
Custom designing a new yacht can be a thrilling process for owners. Essentially, the owner can provide input at the earliest design phases of the process. The entire design and build process can take years, and the owner experiences taking the yacht from design concept to launch. A semi-custom approach is also available through a number of yacht manufacturers where the owner is essentially purchasing a production model and providing customizations during the build process. Again, talking through your needs and goals with a yacht broker can lead to the most optimal outcome.
Hiring the necessary and appropriate crew for your yacht is an important consideration where many yacht owners can make mistakes. TGYG’s yacht brokers have experience advising on the crew hiring process for yachts of all sizes. Consulting your yacht broker during this process can lead to ensuring the right personnel are in place and to potentially saving quite a bit of money.
Lastly, resale value of the yacht is also an important consideration. The degree to which your yacht holds its value will be based on a number of factors including the quality of the build and finish, maintenance of the vessel during the years of operation, the age of the boat and the overall market conditions at the time of sale. Discuss with your yacht broker the potential variance in resale between the yachts being considered for purchase. An experienced yacht broker who knows the market can provide guidance and help advise on how much this should be taken into consideration at the time of purchase.
As you can tell, working with an experienced yacht broker that you trust is crucial when pursuing a 70 foot yacht or bigger. With the complexity of the vessels and the many variables to consider, a yacht broker that truly knows the product can be the difference between a yacht purchase that leads to minimal stress and years of enjoyment for you and your family and a purchase that can lead to stressful ownership and regret.
Tom George Yacht Group yacht brokers pride themselves on establishing life-long relationships with clients. Our clients’ long-term enjoyment with their desired yachting lifestyle is our focus. This is evidenced by our trustworthy guidance and assistance throughout not just the purchase process but through years of ownership as well.
