The Differences Between Gulets and Catamarans for Private Yacht Charters

The Differences Between Gulets and Catamarans for Private Yacht Charters

January 12, 2024 by admin 0 Comments

When it comes to choosing a private yacht charter for your cruise vacation, there are two popular options to consider: classic wooden sailing gulets and polyester catamarans. Each type of boat offers unique characteristics and experiences, catering to different preferences. In this article, we will explore the key differences in services, space, feeling, and crew between gulets and catamarans, helping you make an informed decision for your next sailing adventure.

Gulets are classic wooden sailing vessels that exude charm and elegance. Crafted by hand, each gulet is unique in its design and construction. The warm mahogany wood adds to the overall beauty and appeal of these traditional boats. With typically a single hull, gulets are known for their spacious decks and comfortable cabins. A gulet measuring 24 meters or larger can easily accommodate 10 to 12 guests across its six cabins.

On the other hand, catamarans are renowned for their multi-hull design, featuring two parallel hulls connected by a central deck. This design provides stability and can result in a shallower draft. Catamarans are often updated by the factory each year, offering a more modern design and luxury options. Depending on the size, a catamaran can comfortably accommodate eight guests in its cabins.

Gulets are known for their spacious decks and comfortable outdoor areas. They usually offer a variety of lounging areas, including a large aft deck, sunbathing cushions for all guests, and a forward deck area with a lounge area. On the other hand, catamarans, ranging from 40 to 60 feet, provide a good balance of interior and exterior space due to their wider beam. However, the size of the cabins is limited to the space of the hulls. The finish and amenities of the cabins may vary depending on the options chosen by the charter company. It is crucial to check if the showers on board are cubical showers or shared showers with toilet options. Larger catamarans generally offer more options in terms of facilities and comfort.

Gulets are motor-sailers, meaning they rely on both sails and engines for propulsion. While they can offer a traditional sailing experience, they are not as performance-oriented as dedicated sailing yachts. Ideal for a relaxing day cruising around the islands, gulets prioritize comfort and leisure over speed. Catamarans, on the other hand, are designed for efficient sailing and can often achieve higher speeds under sail alone. They are renowned for their stability, making them suitable for those prone to seasickness. With the right wind conditions, catamarans can offer an exhilarating sailing experience.

When chartering a gulet, you can expect a comprehensive crew that includes a captain, chef, hostess, deckhand, and additional staff. The crew takes care of navigation, cooking, cleaning, and provides a more personal and hands-on service throughout your trip. On a gulet, you can enjoy a hotel-like experience with regular towel and linen changes, covers over the sunbeds and cushions, and other amenities. Catamarans, depending on their size, may require additional crew members for specific services. In most cases, a catamaran charter includes just a captain and a chef or stewardess. While the crew takes care of sailing, meal preparation, and general maintenance, the service may be less comprehensive compared to a gulet charter. Guests on a catamaran are usually responsible for making their own beds and changing the linen. Additionally, the showers aboard may be smaller and shared, depending on the size of the boat.

In terms of affordability, gulets are often considered more budget-friendly than catamarans, especially when comparing similar offerings in terms of space and service. The cost of a gulet charter can vary based on the size, age, and amenities of the boat. On the other hand, catamarans generally come with a higher price tag due to the level of service provided, the number of crew members, and the number of cabins available. Luxury catamarans, in particular, can be quite expensive.

The choice between a classic wooden sailing gulet and a catamaran ultimately depends on personal preferences, group size, budget, and the type of sailing experience you seek. Both options offer enjoyable and unique cruise vacations, but they cater to different tastes and requirements. Whether you prefer the traditional elegance of a gulet or the stability and modern luxury of a catamaran, make sure to consider the key differences outlined in this article. Embark on your summer cruise adventure with the perfect vessel that meets your needs and desires.

Sailboat vs Catamaran Comparison

1. stability:.

  • Sailboat: Embraces the classic elegance of a single hull, providing a responsive and traditional sailing experience. The tilting motion, counterbalanced by the daggerboard, adds a dynamic element to the journey.
  • Catamaran: Boasts unparalleled stability with its two hulls, virtually eliminating the pronounced tilting effect. The absence of deep keels and ballasts enhances agility and lightness, offering a smoother ride. Ideal for those who are prone to experiencing a bit of seasickness!
  • Catamaran: Defines spaciousness, providing individual cabins with dedicated bathrooms. The square-shaped dinette mirrors domestic proportions, and the substantial, well-equipped cockpit encourages social gatherings.
  • Sailboat: Offers a cozy and intimate setting, utilizing space efficiently. While cabins may be more compact, the sailboat's design fosters a close-knit atmosphere among passengers.
  • Catamaran: Impresses with a wide footprint, enhancing onboard living space and comfort. The challenge lies in marina space during peak seasons, offset by the freedom to enjoy extended periods aboard without the need for frequent shore visits.
  • Sailboat: Navigates marinas with ease due to its narrower profile. While confined space might limit interior room, the sailboat's ability to find berths becomes advantageous during bustling harbor seasons. It's worth noting that this characteristic can vary depending on the model; for instance, new models such as the Bavaria C38 or the Dufour 44 (premiered in Düsseldorf and soon available) feature generous beams, providing more space, especially in the main front bedroom, and creating a general feeling of larger spaces, even on the deck.

4. All on the Same Level:

  • Catamaran: Integrates the dinette and cockpit seamlessly, creating a harmonious, unified space with a transparent sliding wall. Visual continuity fosters a connected and inclusive experience among guests.
  • Sailboat: Embraces a more compartmentalized layout, allowing for distinct areas that cater to different activities. This provides passengers with varied environments throughout the vessel.

5. Manoeuvrability:

  • Catamaran: Exhibits impressive maneuverability, thanks to two engines that facilitate precise control in tight spaces. The ability to turn within its own axis is particularly advantageous in crowded harbors.
  • Sailboat: Requires careful and deliberate maneuvering in harbors due to its single engine. While agility might be reduced, the sailboat's sailing capabilities shine when navigating open waters.

6. Speed and Sailing:

  • Catamaran: Hydrodynamically efficient hulls offer superior speed, especially in upwind sailing conditions. The catamaran excels in providing a swift and enjoyable journey, minimizing the impact of adverse weather.
  • Sailboat: Demonstrates versatility in sailing conditions, adapting well to upwind challenges. While not as inherently fast as a catamaran, the sailboat's overall speed ensures an engaging sailing experience.

7. Comfort on Board:

  • Catamaran: Appeals to first-time sailors seeking a home-like experience. Offers disengaged and domestically oriented spaces, ensuring privacy between hulls—a valuable feature for those with varying daily routines or sailing with a skipper or children.
  • Sailboat: Fosters a more communal atmosphere, ideal for passengers who enjoy close interaction. The sailboat's compact layout promotes shared experiences among travelers.

8. Autonomy:

  • Catamaran: Slightly compromised autonomy due to weight sensitivity. Limited fuel independence and water reserves necessitate more thoughtful planning. The presence of two engines enhances maneuverability, allowing for precise navigation.
  • Sailboat: Excels in fuel autonomy, providing extended sailing periods without the need for frequent refueling. A single-engine simplifies maintenance and promotes straightforward, self-sufficient voyages.

9. Organisation of Space:

  • Catamaran: Typically designed with a standardized layout, catamarans for charter often feature two cabins in each hull, strategically positioned at the extreme bow and stern. This layout, with two bathrooms centrally located, offers a consistent and practical accommodation setup. Innovative models feature an exterior galley integrated into the cockpit, providing a unique blend of space and functionality.
  • Sailboat: Boasting a more versatile structure, sailboats come in various layouts to cater to diverse preferences. Modern designs challenge traditional constraints with generous beams. This not only enhances interior space, especially in the main front bedroom but also creates a broader and more open atmosphere on the deck. The flexibility in cabin arrangements allows for a personalized and comfortable sailing experience, accommodating different preferences and needs. Ultimately, the organization of space on a sailboat is influenced by the specific model chosen, allowing for a tailored approach to onboard living.

gulet vs catamaran

Catamarans excel in rough seas, thanks to their twin-hull design providing enhanced stability and reduced heeling compared to monohull sailboats. The unique architecture allows for increased speed and maneuverability, making them efficient in navigating challenging conditions.

Key to their rough-sea capabilities is the bridge deck —the space between the hulls—featuring ample clearance in well-designed catamarans. This minimizes slamming, enhances seaworthiness by reducing structural stress, and ensures a smoother ride in turbulent sea states.

While catamarans can capsize in extreme situations, proper design, operation, and the skill of an experienced captain contribute to their overall capability in handling a variety of sea conditions, ensuring a secure and enjoyable sailing experience, even in rough seas.

A sailing catamaran and a power catamaran differ primarily in propulsion . A sailing catamaran relies on sails, offering a traditional experience with stability and efficiency. In contrast, a power catamaran uses engines, emphasizing speed and ease of handling. Power catamarans are chosen for faster cruising and covering more miles.

Catamarans are often considered faster than monohull sailboats due to their hydrodynamic design . With two hulls providing stability, reduced drag, and a wider beam for efficient sailing angles, catamarans excel in speed. However, sailboats showcase versatility, excelling in certain conditions such as upwind sailing. Overall speed comparison depends on various factors, including design and wind conditions.

Sailing a catamaran is often seen as less challenging for beginners due to inherent stability and reduced heeling. The dual-hull design provides balance, making catamarans forgiving in terms of capsizing. While novices appreciate stability, adjustments are needed for maneuvering and handling increased windage. Proficiency comes with practice, and experienced sailors may find catamarans offer a refreshing change in sailing dynamics.

Choosing a gulet or catamaran for your cruise in Europe

If you have done several cruises in the mediterranean and Caribbean one gets a preference of type of boats to choose. If one goes for a private yacht charter on a catamaran or a wooden traditional gulet. Here our view of the experience with the two

The warm wooden mahagony wood makes it a beautiful experience. A gulet 24 meter and above have most 6 cabins and can take comfortably 10 to 12 guests aboard.

Catamarans are well known for their multi-hull design, consisting of two parallel hulls connected by a central deck. This design provides stability and can result in a shallower draft. The catamaran is well known and are pretty similar to each other if one rents a 60 foot lagoon in Mediterranean or Caribbean. They are made same and updated by the factory each year for more modern design and luxury options. A catamaran can take 8 guest comfortably depending on the configuration of the cabins.

Space and comfort

Gulets are known for their spacious decks and comfortable outdoor areas. They often have a variety of lounging areas, including a large aft deck, sunbathing cushions for all guests, and a forward deck area with lounge area.

The larger the catamaran the more options.

Sailing dxperience

Gulets are motor-sailers, meaning they rely on both sails and engines for propulsion. While they can offer a traditional sailing experience, they are not as performance-oriented as dedicated sailing yachts. A relaxing day cruising around the islands is ideal with a gulet cruise.

Gulets usually come with a crew that includes a captain, chef, hostess and deckhand and additional staff. The crew takes care of navigation, cooking, and cleaning, providing a more personal and hands-on service for your whole trip. On a gulet you have more an hotel service aboard. Catamarans depending on the size you need to hire the crew extra for the services you require. Mostly it is only two crew, a captain and a chef or stewardess. Difference between a Gulet and Catamaran

I would suggest going with the gulet charter over a crewed catamaran for several reasons. First, the Blue Cruise on a gulet is a product unique to Mediterranean whereas you can charter a catamaran worldwide. The hospitality of Italian crew on a gulet will amaze you, whereas a hired skipper and hostess on a cat will be more functional and will most likely not be professional as most cats are foreign flagged. With the cat, yes you would need to have an additional berth/cabin for both the skipper and the hostess unless they come as a couple, in which case one cabin would suffice. You would also need to pay for their meals and drinks in addition to their daily rates.

Comfort wise, again the gulet wins as there is so much room in cabins and on deck. On the cat, it would be up to you and the crew to decide what meals are on and which are off. On the gulet, you can have half board, but bear in mind that if you plan to sail, you'll need to plan an itinerary where you can actually be at a restaurant every evening, and much of this coastline is sparse and undeveloped (in a beautiful way.) Once you have a couple of meals off the gulet, you may find yourself preferring to eat on the boat for the quality and the value, because you do have your own personal chef already in the price. Not all gulets sail well so if you go with the gulet, ensure that the crew and the boat are prepared to sail whenever weather conditions comply.

A/C on standard and deluxe gulets is often part-time, designed to run in the early afternoon and evenings before midnight. It's normally then turned off as a courtesy to any nearby boats, and is usually not even needed unless there's a heat wave. Luxury gulets will offer 24/7 A/C.

The service with gulet for comfort and relaxing is unmatched with any catamaran

Gulet Charter in Croatia - Guide

Gulet Charter in Croatia - Guide

The selection and offer of gulets available for private charters and cruises in Croatia are diverse. In recent years, gulets have topped the list of most desirable vessels. Increasing demand has been accompanied by an increase in the gulet fleet and the quality of service. This article will introduce you to gulet charters, what to expect, and how to book.

What is a Gulet?

Gulet is a traditional motor-sailing vessel mainly built in the coastal towns of Bodrum and Marmaris, although similar vessels can be found all around the eastern Mediterranean.

Gulet is one of the most popular boats for charter in the Mediterranean . Gulets vary from 14 to 35 meters and offer comfortable accommodations in air-conditioned cabins, bathrooms, and additional amenities typical for modern yachts.

Today, charter gulets have a classical outside look and lines, but inside, they are furnished and equipped with amenities characteristic of modern yachts and designed for comfortable cruising.

Charter Gulets can accommodate 8-16 guests in 4-8 guest cabins, mostly double and twin cabins. Croatia, Greece, and Turkey are the most popular Mediterranean gulet charters destinations.

What are the pros of the Gulet Charter?

Gulets offer comfortable accommodation in air-conditioned en-suite cabins , with enough storage space for your belongings and a guest's saloon with a bar. In addition, there are many outdoor spaces: an aft deck with an al-fresco dining table and a front deck covered with sun pads. More luxury gulets have a Jacuzzi, and some have a sauna.

Gulets are fully crewed boats , meaning every detail of your sailing trip is covered. Depending on the size and the charter price, there can be 3-7 crew members.

Chartering a private gulet allows you to choose your cruising itinerary and, of course, be in agreement with the captain. You can hire a gulet from Split, Trogir, Dubrovnik, Zadar, and Istria in Croatia. However, most of the Gulet fleet is in Split and Dubrovnik and is also available for one-way charters.

Gulets are a perfect choice for larger families and groups of friends. Gulets have water sports amenities like a stand-up paddleboard, kayak, fishing and snorkeling equipment, water skis, and a tender boat. Of course, the list of extra equipment depends on the size and price. More luxury gulets have Jet ski, sea scooters, etc.

How much does it cost to charter a gulet?

Gulet charter prices vary and depend on the size, comfort, quality, number of crew members, and the rental season. There are three basic categories of gulets: standard, luxury, and deluxe.

Average prices per week based on the category:

Standard gulets from 15.000 EUR-25.000 EUR  per week

gulet-charter-croatia-smart-spirit.jpg

Luxury gulets from 25.000 EUR-50.000 EUR  per week

Deluxe gulets from 50.000 EUR -100.000 EUR per week

luxury-gulet-charter-croatia-corsario.jpg

The charter price includes:

Accommodation on the yacht, crew wages and food for the crew, VAT, fuel for main engines up to 4 hours cruising per day, 24 hours fuel for daily generator use ( air condition), complete linen and towels, tender, yacht insurance, service on board, sojourn taxes, yacht cleaning, use of leisure equipment on board, WiFi.

The charter price does not include:

Food and beverages, port and marina fees, private expenses, transfers from/to the airport, fuel for the motorized program (waterskiing, jet ski). These extra costs will be charged from the APA (Advance Provision Allowance), usually 30% of the charter price.

APA covers the following costs: food and beverages for the Charter Party, port fees, national park entrances, fuel for Personal Watercraft, shipping agents fees, custom fees, charter licenses if cruising in Montenegro, and other costs for services requested by the Charter Party during the charter such as but not limited to hire or purchase costs of any special equipment placed on board at the Charterer's request, shoreside transport, and excursions.  The Captain will produce final accounts at the end of the charter, and any unused funds will be refunded directly to the Charterer in full. If the funds are insufficient, the Captain will advise you accordingly, and bills will be settled upon disembarkation.

How far ahead should I book a gulet?

Although a wide choice of gulets is available for private charter in Croatia , booking at least eight months before the charter is wise. If you want a more luxurious option, look for the perfect match at least 12 months before. If you plan to cruise during the peak summer months, booking your gulet charter well in advance is advisable as these months are in high demand.

Turkey has the widest gulets offer in the Mediterranean , so you will likely find a suitable yacht anytime. However, just like in Croatia, if you are looking for a more luxurious version, plan your cruise at least six months before the trip.

Greece has the lowest number of charter gulets of all the Mediterranean countries. Therefore, it`s never too early to start planning the cruise and gulet charter in Greece.

When is the best time to sail in Croatia?

Thanks to its position in the moderate climate belt, Croatia enjoys a predominantly mild climate that favors year-round sailing opportunities. Officially, Croatia's sailing season starts in early April and ends in late October.

The best time to charter a gulet and cruise in Croatia depends on your preferences and what you're looking to experience during your cruise. Here are some considerations for different seasons:

1. Summer (June - August)

Summer is the high tourist season in Croatia, with warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine. Daytime temperatures can range from 25 to 35 degrees Celsius. The sea is usually calm during summer, providing smooth sailing conditions. This is the ideal time for swimming, snorkeling, and enjoying water sports. The coastal towns and islands are vibrant with cultural events and festivals.

2. Spring (April & May) and Fall (September & October)

Spring and Fall offer milder temperatures, making outdoor activities more comfortable. Daytime temperatures range from 20 to 25 degrees Celsius. These shoulder seasons are less crowded than the peak summer months, allowing for a more relaxed and authentic experience. Spring brings blooming landscapes, while fall showcases warm colors. Both seasons offer beautiful scenery along the coast and islands.

The best time to charter a gulet ultimately depends on your preferences. The summer months are ideal if you enjoy the buzz of summer activities and warm weather. The shoulder seasons might be more suitable if you prefer a quieter experience and a more temperate climate.

What kind of menu is served on a gulet?

The guest can choose between two food packages, half board and full board . All menus are freshly prepared and based on local, fresh ingredients .

Breakfast will typically consist of a full and varied buffet, including bread, pastry, jam, butter, honey, fruit, cheese, eggs served in various ways, ham, cereals, tea, coffee, and fresh fruit juices.

Lunch consists of a main course, including fish, meat, chicken, and vegetables. This will be served with side dishes, salads, and vegetables, followed by fresh fruit or dessert.

Dinner time on a gulet is a unique experience, usually lasting for a few hours. As the sun goes down, you can indulge in the sunset view, relax with family and friends, capture fantastic photos, and create lifelong memories. Dinner is served in the alfresco dining area, just like all other meals, except in case of unpleasant weather conditions, the dinner service will move to the saloon. Following an aperitif, you can enjoy a three-course dinner beautifully presented and served by the professional and friendly crew.

For more expensive luxury gulets, lunch and dinner are served in several courses, and light snacks are served during the day . 1st class fish and meat complexly prepared food require top chef skills and the most demanding palate.

What are the drink options on a gulet cruise?

There are several drink packages available on a gulet cruise:

  • Beverages are paid according to consumption - by bar price list.
  • The all-inclusive domestic drink package includes Croatian quality wines, domestic beers, spirits, soft drinks, natural and mineral water, milk, tea, and coffee. The average price is 200 EUR per person per week
  • All-inclusive non-alcoholic drink package appx 90 EUR per person per week.

Foreign liquors and wines are not included in this package. These can be ordered extras, or the clients can bring the drinks (if the gulet charter policy allows). If the clients supply the drinks, the service (corkage) fee applies, approximately 500 EUR – 700 EUR per week.

life on board

life on board

Yacht charters open an entirely new level of flexibility, freedom and relaxation. It is the ultimate opportunity to escape the stress of ordinary life. Do as much or as little as you please - why not discover your own secluded cove on Vis Island to drop anchor, or simply lounge on deck in complete privacy and comfort at Palmizana on Hvar? A day on board cruising the Croatian islands is one long list of truly stunning moments: breakfast on deck with the first rays of sun, a morning swim in crystal clear waters of the Adriatic, sipping fresh coffee with the warm breeze in your hair as the boat glides through the water. Later in the day there will be time to re-acquaint with your land legs; be it browsing for souvenirs at a local market on Hvar or Vis Island, or an evening meal at a quaint bistro on Mljet Island followed by a stroll through the cobbled streets of KorculaTown. Then at last with weary eyes you will seek repose in your cabin, or why not stay on deck and sleep under the stars? Rare moments that will live long in the memory.

Your time on board cruising along the Croatian Coastline will very much depend on your lifestyle choices and interest in cultural or recreational activities. We will ask for information on your preferences to assist you in making the most of your time on board. Yacht charters in the Adriatic will typically be arranged on a half board basis with breakfast and lunch served on deck; a chef will be on hand to serve up traditional Dalmatian dishes but will also happily accommodate any dietary requirements. Each vessel will come with a full crew. The cost of alcoholic drinks is usually met via a separate payment on conclusion of the cruise, and we consider it our pleasure to pre-arrange stocks of requested wines or beverages on board.

gulet vs catamaran

Our yacht portfolio in Croatia has been hand-picked with convenience and comfort in mind. Each yacht will contain lounging areas to stretch out and unwind, and some yachts are equipped with hammock nets fitted at the aft or the bowsprit. A varying selection of marine recreational toys is also to be found on board, depending on the vessel, which can include anything from diving gear to jet skis or inflatables. We will endeavour to meet clients' specific requirements at the booking stage. All vessels also come with full Wi-Fi provision as standard.

Our skilled team of yacht charter brokers will tailor the charter to the nature of the occasion, be it a family sailing holiday, group of friends or couples, or a special occasion to celebrate. We provide all our clients with a personal concierge who handle organisational arrangements on their behalf. This may include booking restaurants, recommending bars, securing tickets for summer festivals, arranging private jets or airport transfers or any other possible requirements our guests might have. A typical charter agreement would contain provision for up to four hours sailing daily, and we will draw on the benefit of our considerable local experience to secure the best itinerary with the captain.

We have intimate knowledge of the best islands and islets, coves, grottos and swimming areas to delight in, many of which may not be offered on the standard routes. For purposes of illustration, a typical day may commence with breakfast onboard, followed by a leisurely dip in the pristine waters of the Adriatic. Mid-morning the captain may up anchor, to commence a relaxing journey across to the next island. Here our advice will be invaluable in recommending the best coves and inlets to visit, perhaps for a further swim before lunch. After a meal on board some may wish to lounge on deck with a good book, while the more adventurous will disembark to dry land in pursuit of a leisurely activity or architectural treasure. In the evening, the crew may tender your party ashore for a meal at one of the local restaurants, or perhaps to visit a bar on the island, we are happy to recommend the best. Childcare services can be arranged if the kids prefer to stay onboard to watch a movie. Most vessels will charter from Split or Dubrovnik, with a popular route being a staged cruise between the two. For example, a typical seven-day itinerary would include a departure from Split, followed by a day spent moored in the waters off each of Solta, Brac, Hvar, Korcula, and Mljet before allowing time for a majestic final sail into the beautiful walled Pearl of the Adriatic - Dubrovnik.

Highlights of chartering a yacht in Croatia

  • Watch the sunrise or sunset - no matter how many times you have watched the sun emerge from or disappear below the horizon, the experience never gets old. The Adriatic sunsets are beautiful.

  • Sailing is a wonderful way to connect with the nature and the cosmos, it will stay with you forever.
  • Star gazing - a zero pollution sky especially around Lastovo Island will give you the best star gazing experience. Lying on deck observing the stars in peace and quiet will give you the best meditation ever.

Gulet Charter

What is a gulet.

Imagine sailing the Mediterranean in a boat that has a Pirates of the Caribbean exterior and a 5-star hotel interior. If you opt for a gulet charter , that’s what you’ll get. Gulet, by definition , is a two-masted or three-masted wooden sailing vessel that has its origins in beautiful Turkey , more precisely in the cities of Bodrum and Marmaris . The word gulet originates from the Italian word goletta which means schooner, which is a synonym for a sailing ship.

Today, gulets have found their place in the nautical tourism and are popular as excursion boats, but that wasn’t their original purpose. In the past, they were used as freight vessels in sea trading in the Black Sea, as well as fishing vessels in the Adriatic. The production of gulets has culminated in the 1970’s and these wooden vessels have become a symbol for sailing tourism in Turkey. Today’s gulets are built using the traditional plank-on-frame method, with improvements in terms of sturdiness and interior design. Modern gulets have all sorts of luxury add-ons, such as Jacuzzis, flat-screen TVs, or private bathrooms.

PROs and CONs of gulet charter Croatia

As you already may or may not know a  gulet is a traditional vessel almost always made of wood, and used mostly in the Mediterranean for tourism purposes! Gulets are a very popular yacht charter in Croatia, and there are a lot of reasons why, which we’ll get to in a second….

First, let’s explain gulets! Most of them range from about 15 to 35 meters in length, so yachts of respectable size. All of them have masts, usually 2 or 3, but not all of them actually sail. Some gulets are powered solely by an engine, and some are essentially large sailboats combining cruising and sailing.

Gulet as a vessel type probably originates from Turkey, though this is not certain due to their long tradition and use in the Mediterranean countries! They were used as freight vessels in the Black Sea, and fishing and naval vessels in the Adriatic. It wasn’t until recently that gulets took their rightful place in the world of nautical tourism.

So why book a gulet? Here are some pros and cons…

Gulets are large vessels, stable and sturdy, so safety is never an issue as they can handle just about any conditions. Gulets are frequently redone and taken care of so most of them are in perfect condition. Another important thing about booking a gulet can be the price. You can book just a cabin on some gulets (and only on a gulet)  so it’s the best option if you plan sailing in small groups (2-4 persons). If you plan on sailing in big groups you can also book an entire gulet.

Gulets offer a better service than most other vessels in our offer. With gulet charter you get a full service, an attentive crew on board, a cook, a skipper, and all sorts of additional services. There’s tons of recreational equipment on a gulet, and some of them even come with a Jacuzzi tub on the deck.

They offer more space than you can get on any other type of vessel. Best of all, you don’t have to do almost any planning aboard the gulet, just kick back, relax on one of the many sun chairs, and just enjoy your time in Croatia!

Lastly, cabins aboard most of our gulets offer a far more luxurious feeling than those in almost all other yachts (except luxury yachts of a different type). You can get a far more comfortable experience sailing a gulet than perhaps any other type of vessel.

Lastly the traditional atmosphere! Gulets offer not only sailing, but a history lesson. There’s a magical feeling aboard the gulet (that can certainly make for a perfect romantic getaway), you just can’t get with a modern yacht!

If you want a boat for yourself (or travel in a small group and wish for intimacy) and mind having other people on the cruise, perhaps a sailboat or a catamaran is a better option. So if You’d like to get away from people, gulet is not a perfect choice! Also if you’re planning to sail by yourself, or in nautical terms “charter a bareboat” yacht, you should rule out gulets…

Gulets are not extremely fast yachts, so if its speed you’re after, it may be better to book a motor yacht . There’s more freedom in creating an itinerary aboard… well, say a sailboat, so again gulets may not be perfect for this type of adventurer.

In the end it all depends on what you want to get out of your sailing trip… To each his own, right?  Chartering a perfect yacht can be a pretty difficult choice, but that’s where we come in! Contact us and let CharterCroatia help you with find the best option for you and provide you with the truly amazing sailing experience!

We are planning a vacation to Turkey end of June/start of July this coming summer for our 35th wedding anniversary - will be traveling with our 2 adult children. We would like to charter a gulet or catamaran out of Bodrum for one week (with a captain).

two questions:

1) I am familiar with catamarans, but not gulets other then reading about them... can someone describe the difference in the experience.

2) Also, can someone recommend services/captains boats that they have charted before. We would like to have a Captain that speaks some English.

Thanks in advance,

Send a PM to the Bodrum DE,scbc,as this is her topic of special interest and knowledge. You can check through some of her earlier posts to see the excellent information she provides on sailing and boat hire around the Bodrum area.

BTW,if you can despatch your two grown up kids to the dingy towing behind it'll be sooo much more romantic ♥ Have a great trip!

gulet vs catamaran

There is quite a bit of difference between the catamaran and the gulet experience. The catamaran is normally a 'bareboat' experience in which the charterer is responsible for navigating and provisioning the yacht. It can be thought of as a sporting holiday. An independent, English speaking skipper can be hired to navigate for approximately 130 Euro per day, and a chef/hostess can be hired for cleaning and cooking for about 100 Euro per day.

The gulet experience is akin to staying in a floating boutique hotel which changes location 2-3 times per day. Gulets come fully crewed with captain, chef and deckhand(s) so the charterer does not need to be involved in the day to day running of the yacht, cleaning or meals but is always welcome to assist with sailing and itinerary planning. The design of gulets also means that there is quite a bit more room to spread out and move around than a catamaran. Most gulet crews have a good level of spoken English.

Whichever one you choose, the coastline, attractions and local waters are stunningly beautiful.
