Sailing Holidays Cornwall

Classic Sailing offers hands on sailing adventures on traditional boats and tall ships all over the world, but our heart is in Cornwall.  Our office is in Portscatho and our home port is the sailors paradise of St Mawes.

Pilot cutter ‘Eve of St Mawes’ was our first charter boat and for 20 years she explored every cove and creek in Cornwall and the Scillies. She has been replaced by her bigger sister ‘Tallulah’ who carries on the company ethos of adventure afloat and exploring ashore by rowing boat. In addition to our St Mawes based pilot cutter we now have a growing fleet of beautiful boats that are based in Cornwall for you to enjoy. Cornwall has many picturesque anchorages, fishing villages and tree lined creeks to visit and plenty of sea room in deep waters without strong tides.

sailing in Cornwall.

Why is Cornwall Great for Sailing?

North Cornwall offers you the crashing waves, old mine chimneys and rugged scenery straight out of the Poldark TV series. Ideal for surfers but an unfriendly shore for sailing ships. In contrast South Cornwall is just about perfect for sailors.  The Isles of Scilly are a granite archipelago off Lands End are a more advanced sailing playground to navigate but a holiday destination that is out of this world.

The granite cliffs of West Penwith protect Mounts Bay from the North West and the Lizard Peninsula cuts down some of the ocean swell and creates a varied sailing ground to explore around Falmouth Bay. Small fishing villages nestle in every sheltered bay or river from Cadgwith to Cawsand and there are plenty of anchorages where you can be the only boat.

Cornwall is windy, one of the sunniest regions of Britain, un polluted, the seas are unbelievably blue. There are plenty of headlands to aim for, creeks to navigate, picturesque ports small stone quaysides to discover.

There is a long tradition of boat building, seafaring, fishing and world exploration from Cornish shores. World renowned chefs have made their home here and we can row to some great waterside pubs without a streetlight in sight.

Isles of Scilly – Wildlife and Sub Tropical Flora

Located 35 miles from Lands End are the Isles of Scilly. Part of Cornwall but totally unique, this archipelago of granite reefs, white sand beaches offers a challenging but rewarding sailing ground. The islands of Tresco, St Agnes, Bryher, St Marys and St Martin all have their charm and there are awesome anchorages off uninhabited islands too. The seas are crystal clear as there are no rivers in the Scillies so it is great for snorkelling. The wide range of habitats from moorland, woodland, dunes, inaccessible rocks and mud and sand flats make a great home for wildlife and staging post for migrating birds.

We have been taking guest crew to this amazing archipelago 35 miles off Lands End  since 1997. If you want to connect with the islands history then sail on a pilot cutter like Tallulah. For 100 years the pilot trade was the islands main economy, before flowers and then tourism took over. Built in oak and larch 44ft Tallulah is an authentic replica of the Scillionian pilot cutters that were based in the islands around 1870-1890’s, so the islanders love to see her visit. Bristol channel Pilot cutter Mascotte also visits The Isles of Scilly regularly.

Also setting sail to the Scillies on a regular basis are larger wooden sailing ships like ‘Grayhound’, ‘Pilgrim’, Anny and Johanna Lucretia. They might not be able to tuck into the smaller anchorages but they can drop their hook in deeper places. All know the isles well and offer a great social atmosphere on board. The islands sit in the Gulf Stream so ashore sub tropical plants flourish and the seas are rich in wildlife with good opportunities to spot dolphins, basking sharks and seals.

The Isles of Scilly have their own destination pages describing what to do on each island, the routes you might sail amongst the islands and some of our favourite anchorages.

A Mecca for Wooden Boats, gaffers, luggers and tall ships

Cornwall has a lot of wooden boats and boatyards. Down here in the SW of England we race Falmouth Oyster Boats and in winter similar half decked gaffers dredge for oysters under sail. In Fowey the iconic Troy keel boats race amongst the moorings and there are numerous boats with bowsprits in all the South Coast ports.

Artists and photographers love us because we help bring historic ships and authentic wooden replicas to Cornish shores. By sailing our vessels you can play a part in creating a maritime spectacle that enhances the small ports and quaysides of Cornwall and brings a timeless quality to a remote anchorage or creek.

Based in St Mawes, Tallulah is a replica of 19th Century pilot cutters that were once a vital part of the economy of Falmouth and the Isles of Scilly. Three-masted lugger ‘Grayhound’ is a replica of a 1776 Cornish revenue lugger that began chasing smugglers and then became a privateer. Pilgrim, is an original deep-sea trawler that would have ranged the whole West Country Coast.

Anny and Johanna Lucretia are wooden tall ships under 100ft that were similar to the working trading ships that unloaded cargoes in tiny harbours all round the coast of Europe.

SAND ACRE BAY, SALTASH

The Tamar Estuary is the largest ria in the West Country, with around 25 navigable miles in the main river and its tributary, the Lynher. Both waterways wind and loop through rich scenery and there are plenty of available anchorages, even in the upper reaches, where drying patches alternate with deeper pools and it is possible to spend a peaceful night cut off from civilisation. However, if civilisation is what you want, perhaps for reprovisioning or simply for eating and drinking, the options are restricted because much of the foreshore and hinterland is private, and wide mud banks mean that some of the public landings are inaccessible at low tide.

“Y ou’ve got your weather report and your sailing experience, but you never really know what you’re going to find until you get out there,” said Gabe, skipper of the 14-metre pilot cutter Agnes, when I asked him what we could expect. The prediction was for strong winds from the east, promising a wild ride to Fowey as we set out from Falmouth on our three-day voyage along the coast.

Beyond the calm waters of Falmouth harbour there was a heavy swell, but the 30mph winds did not materialise. There was plenty to fill the sails, though, and leaving behind the derricks and cranes of Falmouth’s industrial waterfront on a wooden boat almost identical to those that sailed around nearby Scilly almost 200 years ago felt to me as though we were stepping back in time as much as heading out to sea.

The ship’s galley and living quarters, where tea and cakes are served.

As we made our way along Cornwall’s south coast, Gabe decided we needed to hoist another sail to drive us through the heaving waves. I’d been given the job of raising it and was looking at four identical halyards – the ropes used to haul up the sails – trying to work out which one I should untie. I picked a line and Felix, the boat’s mate, tapped a different one as he passed and said with a grin: “That one might work better.”

Had I untied my initial choice I might have brought the boat’s huge mainsail crashing down on our heads. Felix was still smiling, though, as he gave instructions to two of the other five guests standing on the foredeck. We were four hours into our first day on board and were still, quite literally, learning the ropes, though the satisfaction of seeing the sails fill high above the deck was worth any missteps. We were rewarded with a shift in power as the wooden hull drove through the water, the sea spray began to fly, and we began to feel we were an essential part of bringing the boat to life.

Boatbuilder Luke Powell relaxing on deck

The frenetic activity of sailing was interspersed with regular lulls in which coffee and cake appeared, and meals that were improbably impressive given the tiny size of the boat’s galley. There was time, too, to watch out for wildlife. Along this stretch of coast I had seen a minke whale and a pod of common dolphins in the previous weeks, though the sea state that morning meant we were unlikely to spot either, even if they were there. Instead, we watched gannets dive, bullet-like, into the dark water, and guillemots and Manx shearwaters as they skimmed the waves. On the other side of the boat, the coastline of the Roseland peninsula looked almost entirely unspoiled.

Constructed by the renowned boatbuilder Luke Powell, Agnes is a replica of the pilot cutter that served the Scilly island from which it took its name. From the outside at least, Agnes looks much as its namesake would have done in the mid-1800s. At that time, Agnes was used to guide ships through the treacherous maze of shallow waters and hidden ledges around the island archipelago that lies 28 miles off the Cornish coast. Competition for business was fierce, with the first boat out to an incoming ship earning the commission for bringing it in safely.

View from Fowey looking across the harbour to Polruan.

Our small band of sailors, most of whom had met earlier that day, might not have passed muster with the captains of old, though. Gabe told me enthusiasm and willingness to learn were more important on this trip than experience. While most of us had sailed before, one freely admitted he did not know one end of a halyard from the other. I had been sailing, though mainly on dinghies with my children. But a boat like Agnes – with few of the technologies of modern vessels – is a leveller, emerging from another time.

After the uncomfortable sea swell, the calm of Fowey was welcome and we moored beneath the blue-and-white frontage of Ferryside, the house where Daphne du Maurier lived in the late 1920s. As we sat on deck in the evening calm, a heron flew across the water and landed silently in the shallows between us and Du Maurier’s house. We listened to owls hooting at one another in the woods above the water, as a hectic day gave way to a quiet night.

By the time Du Maurier arrived in Cornwall, boats such as Agnes were already a thing of the past, pushed out by the more powerful Falmouth pilot cutters that muscled in on their territory, then superseded by steamships that did not need to stop at the Isles of Scilly before reaching the mainland. Boatbuilders such as Powell, with their passion for the high-performance crafts of the time, have kept their spirit alive, and Cornwall is all the richer for it.

Gannets in flight.

While Agnes’s decks might have felt like home to the original crews, they would not have recognised our quarters, with their neat galley, saloon with small library, and comfortable bunks. There is little in the way of privacy on a boat this size, though the upside is that everyone gets to know everyone else quickly. Over supper, and manoeuvring around each other in the snug cabin, we bonded over stories that ranged from making wine in England to life as a cameraman on EastEnders. Then we collapsed, exhausted, into our bunks.

We woke to the splash of oars and the cries of the cox of one of Fowey’s gig crews, out for weekend training. The water was already busy with taxis and fishing boats, and as I drank tea on deck, an immaculately dressed elderly man passed silently by on a beautiful one-man steam launch. These quiet moments on board, watching the comings and goings of a temporarily waterborne community, are always among my favourites.

Agne in full sail.

As the weekend continued, we began to move around the boat with increasing confidence. We started to anticipate what would need to be done before we were told and, by the end, we were all talking confidently about topping lifts and staysails. In the space of a long weekend, we went from being a disparate group of travellers to a small, and slightly more competent, band of sailors. We were not necessarily slick, but we were beginning to get there, and returning to Falmouth I found myself wondering if I could stow away in this beautifully recreated piece of the past for another trip.

To sit at the helm of a boat such as Agnes as it surges through the water is to feel connected to the wind and the waves, and to know you have tamed some of nature’s forces to propel yourself across the sea. Agnes is a boat for those who dream of the golden age of sail and want to taste it for themselves. Sure, there are easier and faster ways to get from Falmouth to Fowey and back, but certainly none as romantic.

A three-day taster voyage in Cornwall on Agnes with Venturesail costs from £390 pp including meals, equipment and sailing instruction . A seven-day return voyage to the Isles of Scilly from Falmouth costs £1,100pp

Closer to nature.

“The wild camping overnight feels a bit rebellious and on the fringes of sensible. Sometimes scarily close to nature, requiring planning akin to a military small boat operation “

– Skipper Debbie

WE DON'T USE ENGINEs

Sail & wild camp.

The beauty of camping by boat is that 'Outdoor Girl' can carry a lot of gear, so whilst we want you get into the simple life, there is no need to go ultra lightweight. For the 2-3 day overnight sail and camp expeditions we use 'Wild Country Quasar' expedition tents. Well tested in mountain environments, they are equally ideal for beaches and we provide air matresses too. Don't fancy camping? Take a look at our activity courses where you join us on the water each day but can chose your own Cornish accommodation ashore in the evening. Whatever your style - back of a camper van to boutique hotel - we think you will find a memorable bed in Cornwall.

Need an adventure buddy?

Not everybody has an adventure buddy to do the camping, sailing, fishing thing. Luckily we have the boats, a skipper that is 'up for adventure' on land and sea, and a great sailing playground. You skipper and local guide is Debbie Purser. She spent 20 years as skipper of pilot cutter 'Eve of St Mawes' – exploring coastal Cornwall with charter crews She is now on a mission to show individuals and small groups the delights of small boat overnight cruising. Ideal for solo travellers who want company, couples without a boat who want a taster, or anyone who wants inspiration for their own future adventures

Cornish Gig Expeditions

Gig Rowing is a rapidly growing sport, but you don’t have to join a competitive racing club to enjoy the power of 13ft long gig oars and learn to provide the grace and speed of traditional rowing craft. We have a 15ft expedition gig for 2-3 rowers, or you can try the real thing – 32ft of elm –  A proper narrow pilot gig with 6 rowing positions and a turn of speed that a smuggler would be proud of.

between the tides

Neap tides are best for ‘beach to beach’ camping, as there is more dry sand to pitch a tent at the top of beaches and inaccessible coves.  Historically Falmouth pilot rowing gigs pulled up on beaches overnight on the Lizard coast to rest the crews.

Spring tides are perfect for gliding silently up wooded rivers and tucking into hidden spots amongst the salt marsh and overhanging branches.

Tall cliffs towering above the beach offer some protection from strong winds, but also cast a shadow in the later afternoon, making it less ideal for sunbathing.

The beach earned its name from the Great Western Railway, which ran a popular service to Newquay between 1876 and 1960, putting the town on the map as a tourist destination. The railway also built the Great Western Hotel on the cliffs, opposite the railway station.

Locals generally refer to the beach as “Pednee.”

Pedn Vounder is located at the eastern end of Porthcurno cove and can be reached on a low tide spring by walking from neighboring Porthcurno beach . However, be cautious as the tide rises, as you will become cut off and face a steep climb up the cliff “path.”

This sandy beach, about 150 meters long, is located in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. During low tide, it joins with the neighboring Sennen beach . The right side of the beach is dominated by the rocky headland of Aire Point, through which the South West Coast Path passes towards Cape Cornwall, offering breathtaking views from the cliffs and, on clear days, of the Isles of Scilly.

15. Ready Money Cove

Best beach in Cornwall UK? Sheltered by cliffs near the mouth of the River Fowey Estuary, this small sandy beach is surrounded by the medieval part of Fowey on one side and St Catherine’s Castle on the other. It’s slightly shelving, but the beach may become covered during high tides.

The cove is relatively safe for bathing, but it’s not recommended to swim in the Fowey Estuary. Note that there may be water pollution after storms or heavy rain.

During peak season, the beach is cleaned daily and there are litter bins available. There are also tidal rock pools to explore.

Above the cove is a former coach house that was once the home of author Daphne du Maurier during World War II.

16. Porthgwidden Beach

Cornwall best beaches? Porthminster is a small but much-loved beach in St Ives . Despite its size, it remains popular with families due to the sheltered east-facing location that makes it a great sun trap. The beach’s rocky outcroppings, which can be explored by snorkelers and offer rock pools at low tide, add to its appeal. On-site amenities include a small café, toilets, and a row of beach huts that can be rented. The Island car park behind the beach is a popular spot, but it fills up quickly during the summer, so plan accordingly.

While the beach does not have a lifeguard, it is monitored by the St Ives National Coastwatch Station, which is manned by volunteers year-round. Swimming is usually safe unless the winds are coming from the east.

17. Perranporth Beach

Nice beaches in Cornwall? When the tide is low, Perranporth Beach and neighboring Penhale Sands join forces to create one of the largest expanses of uninterrupted sand on the North Coast. The town of Perranporth, with its high street that borders the beach, serves as the epitome of a beach town. As you move towards Penhale Point, a vast network of sand dunes towers behind the beach, which is also a Special Area of Conservation and the site of an ancient buried church.

Most of the amenities and attractions in Perranporth are located near the town end of the beach, including rockpools, caves, a stream, and Chapel Rock, which has a small pool for swimming on its ocean-facing side. The “Watering Hole,” a pub situated directly on the beach, offers stunning views of the shoreline.

18. Praa Sands Beach

Cornwall’s best beaches? The trip from the car park to Praa Sands is a short one, but the brilliant white sand is sure to leave a lasting impression. The sand’s unique shade is due to its composition of seashells, which have been finely ground by the forces of the ocean over millions of years. Bordered by the Lizard and west Penwith and situated in a south-west facing bend, the mile-long beach boasts sheltered sand dunes and is a popular destination for families and surfers alike.

The shallow waters are ideal for children to play and build sandcastles, and the nearby shoreline provides endless opportunities for splashing and swimming. The beach’s convenient location means you won’t have to travel far from the car park to enjoy its beauty. The beach is equipped with convenient facilities, including cafes, toilets, and a 150-space parking lot, as well as a nearby campsite. To reach the beach, take the level path from the right corner of the National Trust car park. Please exercise caution when accessing the beach from Rushy Green, as the dunes can have steep drops following stormy weather.

Crantock Beach is owned and maintained by the National Trust and is preserved through the support of its members, volunteers, and donors. National Trust members can park for free, but overnight camping is not permitted.

20. Carbis Bay Beach

Sandy beaches Cornwall? Carbis Bay, located just under a mile from St Ives , is a wide, sandy beach that is well-equipped and particularly popular among families. Its position in the lee of large, tree-covered cliffs provides shelter from the wind and waves.

Surfing is possible at Carbis Bay on rare occasions, but only when there is an enormous northerly swell. When surf is up, the beach is a popular spot for bodyboarders, with powerful, wedgy waves breaking close to high tide.

Carbis Bay is easy to reach and conveniently located just outside of St Ives , allowing you to avoid summer traffic. It also has its own station on the St Ives train line.

Are beaches better in north or south Cornwall?

Both the north and south coasts of Cornwall have their own unique features and attractions.

For example, the north coast is known for its rugged and wild landscapes, with dramatic cliffs and hidden coves. Beaches in this area are often more secluded and quieter, offering a peaceful escape from the crowds.

In contrast, the south coast of Cornwall is known for its more developed beaches, with a wider range of amenities and activities available. These beaches are often busier and more popular with families, as the water is usually calmer and safer for swimming.

Life at Sea

Life at sea is never predictable, and exactly where you explore with Maybe will be decided on the wind and tide. If you’re new to sailing, don’t worry – the crew will guide you in exactly what to do, even if you’ve never stepped foot on a boat before. Sailing with Maybe is an experience you won’t forget! A beautifully restored classic tall ship, get involved with hoisting sails and being on hand to tack and jibe.

This voyage is perfect for those who want to get to grips with classic yacht sailing in sheltered waters and soak up the diversity of Cornwall’s coastline. No experience is needed to climb aboard as you get to grips with sailing this traditional vessel.

Where the wind takes you

It is likely that you will head west along the beautiful Cornish coastline and up the Helford River exploring the beautiful creeks that have inspired the likes of Daphne du Maurier…and Kylie Minogue. Anchor up on National Trust beaches, visit riverside smuggler’s inns and experience true freedom as the wind fills Maybe’s sails and propels you along this unique and impressive coastline.

If the wind takes you up the coast, discover Place creek beyond St Mawes before continuing up the coast, perhaps even sailing up to the historic port of Fowey before returning back to Falmouth. This is one of the most unique ways to explore the South Coast of Cornwall – and one of the best.

Whichever way you head along the Cornish coast, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for dolphins, birds and plenty of other marine life. You might even fancy a swim in the beautiful Helford river so don’t forget your swimsuit!

Maybe has a dedicated chef onboard to so you don’t have to worry about cooking after a days sailing in the salty sea air. Think locally sourced produce, fresh fish and home-made bread with hearty home-cooked meals and plenty of tea, coffee and cake! Your ticket price includes one glass of wine with your evening meal too.

Your ticket price includes Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and soft drinks. Bedding is provided – you just need to bring your own towels.

Guest berths: 8 Rig: Gaff Ketch

Built in 1929, classic boat Maybe is a beautifully shaped 28m gaff ketch. A strong sea-worthy vessel, she is built with extra strength using steel frames, a hardwood hull and teak decking. After a complete overhaul in 2007 and a restoration to her original Gaff rig in 2011, she now spends her summers sailing Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly and winters keeping warm in Spain and Portugal.

She has a rather famous history, once being owned by Jan Jacob Van Rietschoten, father of the flying Dutchman, Cornelis ‘Conny’ Van Rietschoten. Having spent most of her life privately owned sailing around the world, she has been owned by her present owners since 1989.

Guests are invited to get involved with all aspects of sailing Maybe, from hoisting the sails, taking the helm and even some basic navigation. An onboard chef provides breakfast, lunch, dinner, hot breads and cakes throughout voyages, ensuring you won’t be going hungry after a day on the water!
