NGK F1 Powerboat Championships Series Joining Upcoming Lake Race

History will be made on Missouri’s Lake of the Ozarks in a few weeks when the NGK Spark Plugs Formula One Powerboat Championship Series brings world-class tunnel-boat-racing action to the popular waterway for the first time. Building off the momentum of this season’s first two events in Port Neches, Texas, the NGK F1 Series is going to run its third round as a companion event to the Offshore Powerboat Association -sanctioned Lake Race at Bagnell Dam on June 3-5.

Celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, Lake of the Ozarks also happens to be the hometown of NGK F1 Series director, Tim Seebold, who is very excited to bring the high-octane outboard racing to lake, fulfilling a dream he has envisioned for quite some time.

Longtime F1 racing fans will remember that the state of Missouri was once a stronghold for high-stakes tunnel-boat racing, as it hosted the St. Louis Grand Prix dating back nearly 50 years. Originally held at George Winter Park in Fenton from 1972 to 1999, the race moved to Creve Coeur Lake Park starting in 2000. The 37th and last St. Louis Grand Prix race was held in 2008.

“Since the inception of the NGK F1 Powerboat Championship in 2017 we have wanted to bring F1 powerboat racing back to Missouri,” Seebold said in a press release. “The outboard-racing tradition that began 49 years ago with the Concord Village Lions Club producing the first St. Louis Grand Prix at George Winter Park will once again thrill racing fans as the F1 boats light up the waters of my hometown. It is going to be a special event for powerboat racing fans to see the impressive high-horsepower offshore boats, the agile F1 boats along with the crowd-favorite Tri Hull division all on the water in the same day.

“Thanks to Tom Abbett of Lake Race and OPA’s Ed “Smitty” Smith for the shared infrastructure that has made this all possible,” he added. “We are fortunate and extend our appreciation to Shady Gators, Backwater Jacks, Dog Days, ProServ Business Systems and Ozark Touchless Covers for believing in our vision of bringing these powerboat disciplines together.”

Smith, the president of OPA, agreed that the announcement is great news for the racing community.

“We have learned through our partnership with Powerboat P1 how powerful these partnerships can be,” Smitty said in the release. “I have always wanted to watch the F1 boats race, but never had the opportunity to attend one of their events. Thanks to Tim Seebold for reaching out to us. This is going to be a big boost for us all.”

Abbett, president of the Lake Race Board of Directors, said the board is extremely excited with the addition of the NGK F1 Powerboat Series to the 2021 Lake Race event, which features the new Neon Taco as its primary host location.

“We have been discussing this for a few months, and once Tim Seebold and I met at the racecourse site by the dam, we knew we had to figure out a way to make it happen,” Abbett said in the release. “This addition of different classes will certainly add to the non-stop, on-course racing action and I cannot wait to see the dead start for the F1 boats from the docks; one of the coolest starts in all of racing. This addition will be a ‘must see’ for boating enthusiasts and race fans of all ages.”

According to the release, the public is invited to meet the racers at the Racer’s Reception from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Camden on the Lake Boardwalk. At noon on Friday, the race pits will begin set up followed by a Lake Race Street Party open to the public at Bagnell Dam Strip from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday’s race-day action, which includes Offshore, Formula 1 and Tri Hull, will start with testing at 9 a.m. and the full-throttle, deck-to-deck competition is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

All of the racing action from Saturday will be broadcast via livestream from the NGK F1 website and the NGK F1 Facebook page utilizing a revolutionary live timing system, which allows fans to watch the rapid-paced race positioning in real time while watching the livestream. Additional viewing can be found on the American Broadcast Affiliates airing the show on live national television, where an estimated 40+ million viewers will have the chance to watch the event on broadcast and cable television.

After winning the 2018 UIM F2 World Championship, Alberto Comparato stepped-up to the F1H2o series last season.

The young Italian competed in six races in 2019 with his best position of sixth coming in the final race of the season in Sharjah.

For next year he is resurrecting the Comparato F1 team which his father, Fabio ran from 2001–10.

He told me:

The idea of bringing back our team started a long time ago.

f1 powerboat 2021

Comparato has been testing his DAC recently, which is essential considering that F1H2o hasn’t staged a race this season:

We know that it is better to have the racing equipment in Italy for our training programme just as we did with F2.

When I pressed Comparato for further details, he said that at the moment he wasn’t in the position to disclose any more information.

f1 powerboat 2021

He finished the conversation with a sentiment that I’m sure we can all share:

I just can’t wait now to race again!

10 teams confirmed to start new F1 powerboat season

Stromoy, Schuft among two lady drivers as 2021 Championship likely to take off in May

1.1643442-2610900816

Dubai: At least 10 teams have been eagerly gearing up for the start of a full calendar on the 2021 UIM F1H2O World Championship ready to kick off later this year.

Not a single race could be held during 2020 due to the Coronavirus pandemic that swept the world. Since then, promoters and organisers have been liasing with local authorities before ensuring a minimal calendar of six rounds of the F1 World Championship calendar for 2021.

The season is scheduled to open with the Grand Prix of Italy from May 14-16 followed by the second round of the Grand Prix of Europe in July. After that, the teams will move to China for the customary double-header there at the end of September and first week of October followed by the penultimate round in the Middle East in November and the traditional season finale in Sharjah in the second half of December.

However, the one year in-between has given team enough time to rejig their plans. Among the new teams is ‘Stromoy Racing’ that will be based in Sandefjord, Norway.

After spending 13 years with various F1 teams, Marit Strømøy – aptly called ‘Norway’s first lady of Motorsport’ – has floated the new team to try and give herself a serious chance of competing for the world crown. Named the ‘UIM Driver of the year 2019’, Stromoy will continue her partnership with Bartek Marszalek in a second boat, while Andrea Colombo will be team manager.

Among the first driver reshuffle for this year will see Team Sweden’s Jonas Andersson - last year’s overall runner-up in the drivers’ standings - world team up with 21-year-old Finn Kalle Viippo. The CTIC F1 Shenzhen China Team will be fielding an unchanged line-up with three-time champion Philippe Chiappe starting his 21st year on the tour along with Peter Morin in the second boat.

The Maverick Team will also have a new driver in South African F1 champion Brett Stuart joining Cedric Deguisne, while former multiple F1 champion Scott Gillman putting his new set-up of Gillman F1 Racing, consisting of American racer Greg Foster alongside four-time world champion, Alex Carella of Italy.

The news of Carella joining Gillman F1 Racing is no surprise as it was the American champion who had been guide and tutor since Carella left Victory team mid-season in 2019 to continue racing under the umbrella of Maverick F1 Racing Team on Gillman’s DAC. That move had paid off immediately with the Italian taking his 16th career pole position along with a race win during the Censtar Grand Prix of Xiamen in China.

1.723026-4165122265

The Sharjah Team will also remain unchanged as two-time world champion Sami Selio leading the line-up with fellow Finn Filip Roms, while Portuguese Duarte Benavente will be among the most experienced of the lot as he gears for his 22nd straight season on the F1 circuit. Benavente is yet to announce the second driver of his team.

Not surprisingly, the Team Abu Dhabi line-up has been left unchanged with two-time defending world champion Shaun Torrente leading the charge alongside emirati Thani Al Qamzi. At best times, the two drivers have also been close competitors against each other with Torrente looking at the possibility of landing yet another world crown by the end of this year.

Having made his F1 debut way back in 1996, Blaze Performance’s Francesco Cantando will be marking his 25th season in F1 with German lady driver Simone Bianca Schuft replacing Foster following the American’s move to the Gillman Racing stable.

Another new entry will be Comparato Racing when it lines up 23-year-old Italian and former F2 world champion Alberto Comparato. The Italian spent the last two season with Benavente in the Atlantic Team, but had now opted to manage his own set-up with the experienced Matt Palfreyman.

Marussia f1 team return to russia for moscow city racing, andy webb, marussia ceo: we have seen the strength of that support again in the last few days following the very pleasing announcement of our new powertrain partnership with scuderia ferrari..

Max Chilton, Marussia F1 Team MR02

Max Chilton, Marussia F1 Team MR02

Despite the three-week gap between Rounds 9 and 10 of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship® the Marussia F1 Team has had little time to draw breath, embarking on a series of promotional events to reward the loyal support of its fans.

This week, while the race team conduct the Young Driver Test at Silverstone, the demonstration team are heading ‘home’ to Russia for their second year of participation in ‘Moscow City Racing’.

The event takes place on 20 and 21 July, with the demonstration runs scheduled for Sunday 21 July on the streets surrounding the Kremlin and the ‘paddock’ located close to Red Square.

Max Chilton, Marussia F1 Team

Visitors will also be given the opportunity to enter the inner-sanctum - the Paddock - to soak up the atmosphere and see for themselves the intricacies of Formula 1 design and engineering.

Aside from his on-track duties, Max will participate in a range of promotional activities, taking time out to mingle with the Russian fans during autograph sessions and photo opportunities.

Supporting the Marussia F1 Team over the weekend are main event partner Liga Stavok along with additional partners Instaforex, QNet and RBC.

Max Chilton: “There have been quite a few ‘firsts’ for me in my debut season in Formula One - new racetracks, new cities, meeting new fans - and Moscow City Racing will be my very first visit to Russia. I can’t wait. From what I hear from previous events, the demonstration runs are a fantastic spectacle and the crowd is huge and very supportive.

That’s nice, because we are the only Anglo-Russian team and it is good to keep building on their love of Formula 1 before Russia gets its very own race next year in Sochi. I’m really excited about making the trip and I hope to meet as many of the Russian fans as possible, when I’m not driving through their streets!”

Andy Webb, CEO: “The Marussia F1 Team are very excited to be returning to Russia to participate in the Moscow City Racing event for a second successive year. As the only Anglo-Russian team in Formula One, this event has become a very important date in our Team calendar, as we continue our determined efforts to bring more of F1 to Russia and more of Russia to F1.

This is our opportunity to get closer to the fans and for them to see our car and drivers right on their doorstep, not just on the TV. Our drivers Jules Bianchi and Max Chilton are enjoying a flying start to their exciting debut seasons and the Marussia F1 Team really is going from strength to strength now, making good progress towards its long-term ambitions.

We look forward to a fantastic crowd in Moscow and to expressing our thanks for all the incredible support we receive ‘back home’ in Russia. We have seen the strength of that support again in the last few days following the very pleasing announcement of our new powertrain partnership with Scuderia Ferrari. It seems the fans share our optimism for the future of the Marussia F1 Team.”

Moscow-City: 7 surprising facts about the Russian capital’s business center

f1 powerboat 2021

1. Guinness World Record in highlining

f1 powerboat 2021

The record was set in 2019 by a team of seven athletes from Russia, Germany, France and Canada. They did it on September 8, on which the ‘Moscow-City Day’ is celebrated. The cord was stretched at the height of 350 m between the ‘OKO’ (“Eye”) and ‘Neva Towers’ skyscrapers. The distance between them is 245 m. The first of the athletes to cross was Friede Kuhne from Germany. The athletes didn't just walk, but also performed some daredevil tricks. Their record is 103 meters higher than the previous one set in Mexico City in December 2016.

f1 powerboat 2021

2. Domination of Europe's top-10 highest skyscrapers

7 out of 10 Europe’s highest skyscrapers are located in Moscow-City. Earlier, the  ‘Federation Tower’ complex’s ‘Vostok’ (“East”) skyscraper was the considered the tallest in Europe.

Left to right: the lower of the ‘Neva Towers’ (296 m), Commerzbank Tower in Frankfurt (300 m), Gorod Stolits (“City of Capitals”) Moscow tower (302 m), Eurasia tower (309 m), The Shard’ skyscraper in London (310 m), Mercury City Tower (339 m), Neva Towers (345 m).

However, in 2018, the construction of the 462 meter tall ‘Lakhta Center’ in Saint-Petersburg was completed, pushing ‘Vostok’ (374 m) into 2nd place. The 3rd place is taken by OKO’s southern tower (354 m).

3. The unrealized ‘Rossiya’ tower

f1 powerboat 2021

If all the building plans of Moscow-City were realized, the ‘Lakhta Center’ in St. Petersburg wouldn't have a chance to be Europe's highest skyscraper. Boris Tkhor, the architect who designed the concept of Moscow-City, had planned for the ‘Rossiya’ tower to be the tallest. In his project, it was a 600 meter tall golden cylindrical skyscraper ending with a spire that was inspired by traditional Russian bell towers. Then, the project was reinvented by famous British architect Sir Norman Foster. He had designed ‘Rossiya’ as a pyramid ending with a spire. The skyscraper itself would have been 612 meters tall, and the height including the spire would have reached 744,5 meters (for comparison, the ‘Burj Khalifa’ in Dubai, UAE, would have been just 83,5 meters taller). Unfortunately, the investors faced a lot of economic problems, due to the 2008 financial crisis, so the ‘Rossiya’ skyscraper was never built. A shopping mall and the ‘Neva Towers’ complex was constructed at its place in 2019.

4. Changed appearance of ‘Federation Tower’

f1 powerboat 2021

In its first project, the ‘Federation Tower’ was designed to resemble a ship with a mast and two sails. The mast was to be represented by a tall glass spire with passages between the towers. It was planned to make a high-speed lift in it. The top of the spire was going to be turned into an observation deck. But the ship lost its mast in the middle of its construction. Experts at the Moscow-city Museum based in the ‘Imperia’ (“Empire”) tower say, that the construction of the spire was stopped, firstly, due to fire safety reasons and secondly, because it posed a threat to helicopter flights – the flickering glass of the spire could potentially blind the pilots. So, the half-built construction was disassembled. However, an observation deck was opened in the ‘Vostok’ tower.

5. Open windows of ‘Federation Tower’

f1 powerboat 2021

We all know that the windows of the upper floors in different buildings don’t usually open. Experts say that it’s not actually for people’s safety. Falling from a big height is likely to be fatal in any building. The actual reason is the ventilation system. In a skyscraper, it’s managed with a mechanical system, and the building has its own climate. But in the ‘Zapad’ (“West”) tower of the ‘Federation Tower’ complex, the windows can open. The 62nd and last floor of the tower are taken up by a restaurant called ‘Sixty’. There, the windows are equipped with a special hydraulic system. They open for a short period of time accompanied by classical music, so the guests can take breathtaking photos of Moscow.

6. Broken glass units of ‘Federation Tower’

f1 powerboat 2021

The guests of the ‘Sixty’ restaurant at the top of the ‘Zapad’ tower can be surprised to see cracked glass window panes. It is particularly strange, if we take into consideration the special type of this glass. It is extremely solid and can’t be broken once installed. For example, during experiments people threw all sorts of heavy items at the windows, but the glass wouldn’t break. The broken glass units of ‘Zapad’ were already damaged during shipment . As each of them is curved in its own way to make the tower’s curvature smooth, making a new set of window panes and bringing them to Russia was deemed too expensive . Moreover, the investors had financial problems (again, due to the 2008 financial crisis), so the ‘Vostok’ tower even stood unfinished for several years. Eventually, the cracked window panes were installed in their place.

7. The highest restaurant in Europe
