 pocket cruisers like the Saffier Sc 8m, the answer is yes

Product Overview

Not normally known for gushing praise, I found myself describing my day out with Saffier as ‘one
 of the most enjoyable sails I’ve had in a long time.’

She’s not big, she doesn’t cost half a million, she hasn’t even got a separate heads compartment, 
but I could imagine myself having wonderful sailing adventures in her; exploring the quiet reaches of the Fal, pottering around Poole Harbour, hiding away up the Kyles of Bute or exploring the creeks 
of the River Roach.

Dutch brand Saffier might not be a familiar 
name in UK marinas but given our coastline, with its many harbours, inlets and estuaries, the builder has a lot to offer the cruising sailor.

Family business Saffier make two distinct ranges: the Se range of long- cockpit, lounging-friendly dayboats and weekenders for warmer waters, and the classic Sc range, designed for longer weekends with the possibility to stay on board for a little longer.

The Scs are ideal for those who want to day sail easily, with as little fuss as possible.

They can easily be singlehanded, and the sails – and the loads from them – are easily manageable, more so with the addition of one electric winch.

THE TEST VERDICT

I thoroughly enjoyed my time on the water in the Saffier. She was a delightful boat to sail, even in the North Sea 
in January – albeit the last two days of the month.

To
 my eyes she’s an attractive boat, and while she doesn’t have the accommodation of larger boats, I would relish the opportunity to have one if I lived close enough to her to pop out for evening sails, maybe to anchor in a quiet creek, relax for a while before the sunset and it was time to head home.

She’s perfectly suited for singlehanded sailing; everything on board is easy to operate.

She’s a rewarding boat to sail and obeys the helm, which gives
 a great connection to the boat and the water.

The tiller could be handled with just fingertips, and a solid grip round it was rarely needed.

One only has to rest a
hand on top to feel in effortless control of this great
 little cruiser and in a way, that typifies this boat; she’s
 set up and designed to be easy and enjoyable to sail.

WOULD SHE SUIT YOU AND YOUR CREW?

She’s best used for weekends or nights away but there is little stopping someone coastal cruising or even sailing her across the Channel.

If you’re luckily enough to live near a harbour or estuary, you could get so much use 
out of a boat like this if you are on your own or with 
a partner. Hop on, unzip the stack pack, connect the code zero and away you go.

She could port-hop your way around most of Great Britain or Ireland or, if you have a car with enough grunt, she can be towed, which opens up another level of cruising options.

She might not be cheap for her size
 but well-built small boats rarely are, although it’s rare 
to find such a well-rounded boat as this.

The Sc 8m doesn’t have stacks of complex systems and that’s
 one of her many charms, as there’s less to go wrong,
 but she has just enough to be comfortable to stay on while retaining her eager-to-please nature under sail.

Offshore 8 Meter

Offshore 8 Meter is a 26 ′ 2 ″ / 8 m monohull sailboat designed by E. G. Van de Stadt and built by Tyler Boat Co. Ltd. and Offshore Yachts Ltd. starting in 1969.

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
• LOA: Length overall in feet
• Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

Pocket Cruiser with impeccable safety record

The Catalac 8M is a pocket cruising catamaran which has a solid reputation for quality, strength and durability. Many of the boats found in North America today, were sailed there from Great Britain. The Catalac 8M, although classified as a pocket cruiser was designed with blue water sailing in mind. Twin diesel models can easily motor almost 1000 kilometers without refueling. The 70 amps of charging and 70 gallons of stock water tanks in the Catalac 8M and 9M make even these smaller boats terrific coastal cruisers. Constructed with solid fiberglass hulls, these are quality boats which were built like battleships.

Chuck Kanter calls them one of the catamaran brands that live on through the decades. The Catalac 8M is masthead rigged with a relatively short, but thick mast. As with all boats in the Catalac production lineup, this contributes to a stable boat with a low center of effort. No Catalac has ever been known to fly a hull under any circumstances. 

The mast is cabin stepped in a tabernacle. These can be raised and lowered single handed. The standing rigging is over sized to withstand the extra loading experienced by catamarans (the rig doesn’t unload because the boats don’t heel). 1/4″ 1×19 SS on the Catalac 8M and 9M. They were sold with a mainsail, working jib and a 170% Genoa. When the rig is set up correctly, they sail with a very balanced helm. Twin rudders contribute to their agility and later models (>1980) have matching skegs just forward of the rudders to increase windward ability. The most popular models were the Catalac 9M (30 feet) 255 built and Catalac 8M (27 feet) 216 built.

Interesting that both of these models were built on the same hulls. The mould for the cabin of the Catalac 9M extends further aft to accomodate the aft compartments of the boat, which reduces the cockpit area. In fact the Catalac 8M with it’s minimalist layout has the largest cockpit of any of the Catalacs, including the 12M. 

The entire product line feature solid fiberglass hulls(which can not delaminate) very large cockpits and comfortable accommodations and quality construction. There were two engine options. Twin Yanmar 1GM diesels coupled to a 2.13:1 transmission using prop shafts with propellers just short of the rudders, or a 9.9 HP outboard gas engine. The diesels add about $10,000 to the price of pre owned catamarans when compared to outboard equipped boats.

Another boat options was a “doghouse” mounted above the sliding hatch (shown in photo). As near as I can tell, most European boats have the doghouse as well as about 30% of boats found in the Americas.  The more tropical climates are expected, the less desirable the doghouse becomes. 

The build quality is as good as it gets and you’ll discover these boats age gracefully. 

If you are looking for a catamaran with stellar performance, this probably isn’t the boat for you. Catalacs were designed and built for safety and comfort. As a cruiser the Catalac 8M will carry heavy loads for their size due to a relatively wide hull/beam ratio, deep rocker design, and extreme dead rise hulls with hard chines. The result are boats with an impecable safety record and reputation for quality.

Having said this, it’s not like the boat can’t sail! The Catalac 8M will deliver 6 knots in 10-12 knots of wind, and maintain speed right up to 35 degrees apparent. Boats with outboard engines are slightly quicker than boats with twin diesel engines due to underwater drag of the diesel engine running gear. The Catalac 8M also has high bridge deck clearance for it’s size.

Anyone who’s evaluating smallish pocket cruising catamarans and is searching for a solidly built boat which is a dependable coastal cruiser and great island hopper with moderate performance and plenty of interior and exterior room, at an affordable price should consider a Catalac.

The 58m/190'3" motor yacht 'Netanya 8' (ex. Nov Bermie) was built by CMN Yachts in France at their Cherbourg shipyard. Her interior is styled by British designer design house Winch Design and she was completed in 2007. This luxury vessel's exterior design is the work of Winch Design.

Guest Accommodation

Netanya 8 has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to 14 guests in 7 suites comprising one VIP cabin. She is also capable of carrying up to 14 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.

Range & Performance

Netanya 8 is built with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, with teak decks. Powered by twin diesel Caterpillar (3516B) 2,199hp engines, she comfortably cruises at 15 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 16 knots with a range of up to 5,758 nautical miles from her 123,000 litre fuel tanks. Her water tanks store around 32,000 Litres of fresh water. She was built to BV (Bureau Veritas) I ✠ Hull ● Mach ✠ AUT-UMS classification society rules, and is MCA Compliant.

SECURITY AND STABILITY

The Sarch S8 is one of the few 8 meter modern sailboats that have the A design category that allows you ocean navigation. A optional deep keel with lead bulb gives you stable and safe sailing. Since a good part of the weight of the boat is at 2m of deep.

INNOVATIVE HULL DESIGN

That facilitates the entry into glide.

 It lengthens the effective float length in order to increase the speed in displacement.

The aptly named Wayfinder —referring to a navigational tool—is a 224-foot aluminum multihull and only the second purpose-built catamaran support vessel in the world. (The first is its sistership Hodor .) Built in 2021 by Astilleros Armon, the vessel is the Spanish yard’s largest delivery to date.

The word on the street, or at least in the yachting community, is that the hardy-looking vessel was commissioned by Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates. Oliver Design, the Spanish studio that penned and outfitted the yacht’s interior, confirmed the unconfirmed owner is “one of the world’s wealthiest individuals.” The 10,800-square-foot interior includes crew and guest cabins, offices, a galley, a mess area, lounges and, like many support vessels these days, an infirmary.

With industrial exterior design and naval architecture by the Australian-based big-cat specialist Incat Crowther, Wayfinder pivots between a transatlantic charter yacht to a dedicated support vessel. Available for charter through Edmiston, its 2024 itinerary includes the Mediterranean, Baltic, Red Sea and Arabian Gulf for summer before heading to the Caribbean for winter.

Power is provided by a pair of MTU 16V engines that drive two Servogear controllable-pitch propellers to deliver a maximum speed of 21 knots. An impressive range of 5,500 nautical miles at 14 knots gives it the ability to do very long, oceangoing voyages.

Here are eight fascinating facts about one of the world’s most capable catamarans.

Upstairs, Downstairs

The upper deck accommodation is designed for charter guests when the boat is a superyacht and staff in support-vessel mode. Eleven en suite cabins, including nine single and two twins, sleep up to 12 guests. Twenty-two staff can be accommodated in the main-deck crew quarters. The yacht’s dedicated crew bring a range of experiences, from Master Mariners and dive instructors to royal yacht chefs and ex-navy engineers—plus a medic.

The yacht’s main deck is dedicated to a crazy selection of six tenders and myriad toys, including four Sea-Doos, a 39-foot Compass limousine that accommodates 16 guests and a 37-foot Munson Beach Lander that seats 17. There’s also an array of personal watercraft, paddleboards, Seabobs, and even an Explorer Icebreaker E-Jetboard. The bonus for serious scuba divers is the abundance of dive gear and even a decompression chamber. But unlike its sistership Hodor , the toy list doesn’t extend to a submersible.

Party Platform

Wayfinder ’s capacity to welcome up to 200 guests explains its frequent attendance at high society events, such as the Monaco Grand Prix and Cannes Film Festival. It’s another example of how the yacht’s large helipad comes into its own, capable of hosting a formally dressed crowd for drinks and canapes. According to Incat Crowther’s technical manager Dan Mace, that comes courtesy of the vessel’s catamaran hull, which provides 60 percent more deck space and 40 percent more volume capacity than other vessels its size.

Luxury Lounging

Wayfinder ’s large open aft deck has a commercially registered helipad (meaning it’s also available for charter use) and is used to bring guests on and off the yacht in style. There’s even a dedicated “heli-lounge” where guests can wait for the helicopter transfer. Located forward on the same deck as the helipad, and within easy reach of the yacht’s elevator, the lounge has a modern design.

Technically Gifted

While the vessel is all about having fun at sea, the helm is packed with a range of technical capabilities, from the integrated bridge to the yacht’s MARSS NiDAR long-range perimeter security and drone-detection system for guest privacy and protection. The catamaran hull is further enhanced by a Praxis dynamic positioning system for keeping the yacht in place at sea. On the inside, the layout is dedicated to service areas, including waste management, laundry, workshops and storage.

Pickleball, Anyone?

When not being used for guest transfers, the sky-blue helipad conveniently doubles as a full-size pickleball court, with side lounges for guests to watch from the side lines. To prevent balls from flying into the water, a temporary three-sided net wall is erected around the edge of the court. At night, the big heli ‘H’ lights up in neon green.

Seaview Gym

The beauty of a support vessel is the large amount of space available to carry equipment, toys, and tenders, but it also frees up space for wellness and fitness. On Wayfinder ’s lower deck, the foldout beach club doubles as a well-equipped oceanfront gym for workouts that come with million-dollar views. The gym gear includes an elliptical machine, Nordic spinning bike, weight benches, treadmill, rowing machine, and punching bags. Unlike other yachts with the beach club at the stern, the aft area remains free for swimmers or just relaxing.

Enviromentally Active

Built to the IMO’s latest Tier III emission guidelines, Wayfinder was designed to enhance sustainability. Its onboard treatment plant cleans all wastewater discharged to drinkable quality before being discharged. The yacht’s dry waste is also fully treated to allow the vessel to operate with a zero-discharge policy.
