Welcome to Lee Sails.

Quality and performance.

We realize that not many of you sail around in Christian Radich, the Norwegian training ship with an LOA of 240 ft with a total of 27 sails. When it was time for the Radich to renew her complete sail inventory of 14,638 sq. ft, Lee Sails was selected to do it as well as many other tall ships and schooners. In fact, it's this adaptability and versatility that have made Lee Sails a truly international Sailmaker.

What our clients say

I am so pleased with the drifter sail. Lee Sails are to be commended for their quality and workmanship. I have not seen workmanship of this quality in many, many years. I will certainly recommend these sails very highly. David
I am very pleased with the sail; it is probably the strongest and best made cruising sail I have ever seen. Fit and finish is perfect and attention to detail is terrific. I used the sail for the first time on a five-day off-shore passage from the Bahamas to Chesapeake Bay . Please convey my gratitude for a great product to the great sail makers at Lee Sails. Eric Dullerud
That new mainsail certainly helped my Grampian 26 achieve a first place finish in the white sail division at the North Bay Yacht Club last summer. Alex Mc Intyre
The Liberty Fleet has been using Lee Sails since 1993 and has found their quality, durability and value to be top notch. Further, Bob's easy to work with and has delivered for us on a tight schedule and we look forward to working with him for our future sail needs Andy H., Owner, Liberty Fleet of Tall Ships
Just a line to thank you for the new Bayfield 29 mainsail. It fit perfectly, the first hoist was very gratifying. Purchased 4 new Lee Sails to date and not a problem, great sails. Norm
Our mainsail was in shreds after our latest transatlantic voyage. Argo was in Martinique after the trip and the quotes for the new main were well above $10,000 which made me shiver. After contacting you and getting a quote I was skeptical that you would be able to deliver on your promise, thinking along the lines that you get what you pay for. I anticipated problems but the process and product far exceeded my expectations. Your sails are of very high quality and the service and consideration by you was first class. Thank You. I sailed Argo from Martinique to the Bahamas last May and was very impressed with the superior performance of the boat with the new main. I really didn't expect that. I plan to keep Argo in the Abacos for the next year or so and then make an attempt at the North-West Passage. All with Lee Sails. Charles Hamilton
When I bought my first real cruising boat, a Formosa 51 I named Lost Soul (it was the original Lost soul, not to be confused with the 68' boat I sailed much later) it came with Lee Sails.  The boat was about 3 years old, and they were the original sails. For the next 8 years I sailed her back and forth to Mexico countless times, back and forth to Hawaii 4 times, and in all put about 30,000 miles on those sails. I never changed them.  I did at one time have them cleaned, but other than that, those lee sails took me to more great places than I ever imagined. They say that clothing makes the man.  I believe sails make the boat, and Lee helped make Lost Soul I, my transportation, into a life, that was more like a dream. Bob Bitchin

Schooners using Lee Sails.

Liberty Fleet, Boston, MA and Key West, FL consist of the 125-foot Schooner LIBERTY CLIPPER and the 67-foot Schooner LIBERTY STAR. These schooners have been Lee Sails customers for many years. Completed in 1983 the 125 ft. Schooner LIBERTY CLIPPER is a steel vessel that is a majestic replica of a 19th century clipper ship. The 67-foot LIBERTY STAR is a classic Maine-built wooden schooner that offers a variety of intimate sailing options on Boston Harbor. The LIBERTY STAR was lovingly re-built in 2012, sail a classic! Visit the Liberty Fleet Here !

Another Lee Sail customer is the Schooner Appledore a traditional 86-foot wooden Windjammer, offers a variety of cruises out of Camden, Maine, and Key West, Florida. In the summer, enjoy a sightseeing day sail on Penobscot Bay, where you can observe first-hand the wildlife, islands, lighthouses, lobster boats, and beautiful coast of Maine. In the winter months, join us during your Key West vacation on the waters of the Caribbean. Visit the Appledore Here !

Leesails is happy to have provided sails to the American Rover. Since 1986, the American Rover’s red “tan bark” sails have been one of the signature sights of the Hapton Roads area. She is 135 feet in length and is a three masted topsail schooner. There is ample comfortable seating with shade topside. Below decks you will find 2 smartly appointed climate-controlled lounges, ship’s store and bar, and clean, comfortable rest rooms. Visit the American Rover Here !

Leesails is proud to have provided sails for the Aquidneck. On a Newport sailing cruise aboard Aquidneck, we sail through Newport Harbor, into Narragansett Bay which is where the Newport Bridge is and along the shoreline of Newport's Ocean Drive. The sights are spectacular and the sailing is generally first rate. Guests may help raise sails and participate in the sailing or sit back and relax. Visit the Aquidneck Here !

Leesails has provided sails for The Bay Lady II which sails out of Provincetown Harbor and takes passengers on two hour cruises. Each trip is unique as the varied moods of the wind, sky sea combine to create an ever-changing panorama, accompanied by the sounds of wind in the rigging and the lapping of water against her hull. Visit The Bay Lady II Here !

Leesails is happy to have provided sails to the Lucky Finn. Lucky Finn is a round stern Bugeye, a type of vessel indigenous to the Chesapeake Bay. Bugeyes reached their height of popularity in the 1800's as oyster dredgers and agricultural cargo haulers between the eastern and western shores of the Chesapeake. Their most notable features are their raked masts, leg o' mutton sails and shallow draft which allowed them to navigate freely in the muddy shallows of the Chesapeake. Visit the Lucky Finn Here !

The Sail and Life Training Society (SALTS) were founded in 1974 and is a registered charity in Canada and the USA. The Society operates two tall ships, the Pacific Grace and Pacific Swift , and offers sail training to young people ages 13-25 (as well as Day Sails for all ages). These ships are maintained at the SALTS Marina in Victoria BC. Each year, 1700 young people have the life changing experience of learning to sail a tall ship with SALTS. Voyages take them to the Gulf Islands of BC each spring and fall, and in the summer the ships circumnavigate Vancouver Island. Periodically, SALTS conducts an offshore voyage to ports around the world. Lee Sails is proud to have been supplying sails to these large schooners for many years. Please visit Here !

The schooner Mystic Whaler has a sparred length of 110 feet and a sail area of 3000 sq ft. She has been equipped with Lee Sails for forty years with a new Mainsail and Jib in 2014. Captain John Eginton has over 35 years experience and is a respected veteran of the windjammer world. What are people saying?

  • Ashley and I had so much fun sailing with Gary on Sunday. Thank you so much for helping me plan the trip and for being so accommodating. The boat was beautiful; Gary was an extraordinary teacher and captain; and the cake was delicious! We’re now addicted to sailing and British Columbia. John Just wanted to say thanks for the fabulous sailing experience. Gary was absolutely fabulous!!! Everyone immensely enjoyed the sailing experience and will definitely recommend your company to anyone wanting to experience sailing. Jaime
  • We had a terrific time. Gary is a superb instructor. He impressed the pants off of the two of our number who have taken sailing lessons in Hawaii and British Virgin Islands; and he earned a position in my evaluation of instructors based on more years in university than I care to recount. Dr.Dennis Galon, MEd, PhD Today Tim and Riley had an awesome time sailing with Gary. He was a wealth of interesting knowledge and gave everyone ample opportunities for hands on experiences. This was Riley's first experience sailing and definitely not his last. Gary, Many thanks for a wonderful birthday present for Tim and a great father/son outing for both of them. They would highly recommend this day of sailing. Glenda

Used sails for sale on sailtrader.

Finding and buying a high-quality and affordable used sail is hard. With SailTrader it doesn’t have to be. SailTrader allows you to find used sails from top brands, used racing and cruising sails, and allows you to find sails for your sailboat based on your sail dimensions.

Used Sails From Top Brands

SailTrader is able to help you find used sails from top brands such as North Sails , Quantum Sails , UK Sailmakers , Doyle Sails , Evolution Sails, Precision Sails, Hood Sails and more. Thanks to our marketplace design, and the ability for anyone to sell their used sail, there is a lot of competition for used sails. This makes it easy for buyers to find a sail at a competitive price they can afford.

Shop Racing or Cruising Sails

Sailing is a very specific and unique sport/hobby. This can make it difficult to find used racing and cruising sails at an affordable price. Most people who are selling their used sails have difficulty finding their target customer, and people who are shopping for sails have a difficult time finding someone selling exactly what they need. SailTrader is here to alleviate this problem. Our site is specifically designed to make buying and selling sales quicker and easier. Now, sellers can find their target client, and buyers can search for precisely what they need and find it!

Anyone in the sailing community can create an account, meaning our inventory of used racing and cruising sails is constantly changing. And thanks to the design of our marketplace your search is not limited to your immediate area, meaning you can find a used racing or cruising sail from anywhere! Whether you are looking for a used racing sail, or for a used cruising sail, you are sure to find exactly what you are looking for on SailTrader.

Find Sails Based on Dimensions

There are so many different types of sails that searching for a new one can be an overwhelming process. Now, it doesn’t have to be. Simply measure your old sail, type in the sail dimensions, and find a list of used sails that match those dimensions.

Sail dimensions are specific for every boat and each of them have maximum sail dimensions that cannot be exceeded. In order to properly measure your dimensions you will need to establish the P, E, J, and I of your boat.

A few terms to help you measure the sails are the luff, the leach/leech, and the foot. The luff is the sail’s forward edge. It is the side attached to the mast. The leach/leech is the back edge of a sail, the one not attached to the mast. And the foot is the bottom edge of a sail.

In addition, it is also helpful to know the location of the head, the tack, and the clew. The head is the top left corner of the sail which attaches to the top of the mast. The tack is the bottom left corner of the sail. And finally the clew, is the bottom right corner of the sail.

If you are looking for a mainsail for sale , you will need to know the P and E dimensions. The “P” measurement (also known as the Luff) is the distance from highest point that the mainsail can be hoisted to the top surface of the boom. The “E” measurement (also known as the foot) is the distance along the boom from the mast to the point on the boom to which the mainsail can be pulled. Occasionally you may also want to measure the Leach/Leech of the mainsail. This is the point from the highest point that the mainsail can be hoisted on the mast, to the furthest point on the boom that the mainsail can be pulled to. Make sure you note the minimum and maximum measurements your boat will allow.

If you are looking for a headsail you will need to know the I and the J measurements. The “I” is the distance down the front of the mast from the halyard to the level of the main deck (the luff), and “J” is the distance along the deck from the tack to the front of the mast.

A jib is a triangular staysail set in front of the mast. With a jib headsail, the J measurement is typically 80-90% of the I measurement. This is because the foot usually overlaps the mainsail a bit.

A genoa is a large jib that overlaps the mainsail. Genoas are categorized based on the amount they extend past the mainsail. For instance a 135% genoa has a foot 35% longer than ‘J’ and a 155% genoa has a foot 55% longer.

Finally, we have measurements for spinnakers . You will need to know the I and the J for these sails. “I” is the distance from the highest part of the spinnaker to the deck, and “J” is the length of the spinnaker pole.

what our clients say

5.0 stars on google reviews & tripadvisor.

We had a great trip with Calma Sailing. Dominik was an excellent instructor with comprehensive coverage of the Sail Canada Basic Cruising Skills course. He was also an excellent host during off-hours offering delicious food and interesting conversation. The scenery was spectacular. I would highly recommend this trip for anyone wishing to experience Desolation Sound by sailboat.

Dominik is a great teacher and full of knowledge! Before taking his lessons, I was pretty nervous about sailing and being out on the water. Dominik helped me become a more confident, capable sailor. I highly recommend him for anyone wanting to learn how to sail or to learn more about sailing!

It was truly an amazing experience from start to finish. Dominik, the instructor, was incredibly knowledgeable and patient, making the learning process enjoyable and stress-free… On top of that, the gourmet food provided by Calma Sailing was simply outstanding, adding a touch of luxury to the entire journey. I highly recommend Calma Sailing and Dominik as an instructor for anyone looking to learn how to sail while enjoying delicious meals along the way.

We have the most beautiful memories from our trip with Dominik. He was a wonderful captain, and gave us an unforgettable tour through desolation sound… We are eternally grateful for our time in desolation sound and the absolute beauty we were lucky enough to experience. Also, the food was OUTSTANDING!

Dominik and Ania were both attentive and communicated proactively to ensure our family would have a great experience. The four of us had a mix of sailing experience and expectations which Dominik adapted to in our 5 day course. The food was exceptional and the boat is comfortable and clean. Calma Sailing exceeded our expectations at every step of the trip planning and our tour of Desolation Sound. Thank you Dominik and Ania from Grant, Angie, Arden and Sage!!!!

I just spent 5 days on a liveaboard course with Calma Sailing and it was the BEST! Dominik is an excellent instructor and I felt that we were in the best care on the trip. The Discovery Islands is an incredible place to learn to sail – we saw pods of humpback whales, orca, and he showed us so many magnificent wilderness gems around the islands – it was the most amazing classroom on the water! I feel so much more confident to sail my own boat and will absolutely be coming back for more courses and tours with Calma.

Just back from the 5-day cruise… a fantastic trip! We wanted to experience sailing in Desolation Sound and it was everything we hoped it would be… great scenery, sailing, conversation and food. Dominik was an amazing host and made each day special… Desolation Sound is not to be missed, especially with only the sound of wind in the sails. Really spectacular nature, solitude and quiet, a much needed respite from urban living. We will be back!

This was something I have been wanting to do for a long time and it was the experience of a lifetime! Breathtakingly beautiful and very professional, I would thoroughly recommend Calma Sailing.

HMCS Montréal sets sail for the Indo-Pacific under Operation HORIZON

From: National Defence

News release

Today, His Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Montréal’s crew bid farewell to their loved ones at a departure ceremony held at HMCS Scotian in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

April 14, 2024 – Halifax – National Defence/Canadian Armed Forces

Today, His Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS)  Montréal’s crew bid farewell to their loved ones at a departure ceremony held at HMCS Scotian in Halifax, Nova Scotia .

The departure of HMCS Montréal later this week will represent the first of three Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) warships that are annually deploying under Operation HORIZON in support of the Government of Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy. This deployment demonstrates an enduring commitment to the Indo-Pacific region and enhances Canada’s role as an international security partner.

Throughout the operation, HMCS Montréal will reinforce ties with international allies and strengthen relationships with like-minded nations by integrating with partner navies, participating in training exercises, and engaging in military and diplomatic cooperation. Operation HORIZON includes expanded opportunities to work side-by-side with allies and partners, empowering the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) to play a more active role contributing to regional security.

Increased engagement in the Indo-Pacific region demonstrates Canada’s continuing defence commitment to be a persistent presence in support of peace and security. The work that RCN ships and personnel undertake overseas reinforces diplomatic efforts, promotes Canadian values and interests, and supports Canada’s role as a trusted international security partner both regionally and on the world stage.

“As a Pacific nation, the security and stability of the broader Indo-Pacific region is vital to Canada's future. It is the world's fastest growing region and home to six of Canada's top 13 trading partners. As outlined in our Indo-Pacific Strategy, Canada recognizes the impact that Indo-Pacific security will have on our future prosperity and stability – and that is why we are increasing our military presence in the region by deploying three Halifax-class frigates per year. I thank our sailors and aviators for their dedication to Canada, and I wish them fair winds and following seas.” The Honourable Bill Blair , Minister of National Defence
“Today’s departure represents the significant work and dedication of the Atlantic Fleet in promoting security and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. As the first ship to deploy on Operation HORIZON this year, the sailors and aviators on board HMCS Montréal will collaborate with our international partners, contribute towards regional security, and strengthen the strategic interests of Canada. I know Montréal ’s mission will reflect positively on the Royal Canadian Navy and wish the crew a safe and successful deployment. Fair winds!” Rear-Admiral Josée Kurtz , Commander Maritime Forces Atlantic and Commander Joint Task Force Atlantic
“The ship’s company of HMCS  Montréal has been diligently preparing for Operation HORIZON , and I have the utmost confidence in their ability to display excellence at sea and enhance interoperability with allied navies. I must also thank the families of our crew, who are the heart of our forces. Without their continued support, we would not be able to accomplish what is required of us. So, I thank you for all your efforts in preparation for this departure.” Commander Travis Bain, Commanding Officer HMCS Montréal

Quick facts

On Friday April 12, 2024 , the crew of His Majesty’s Canadian Ship  Montréal   discovered a problem with a system that required rectification. It was determined that it would be efficient and expedient to complete this repair prior to departing Halifax. To conduct required repairs and preserve required readiness training the crew will remain onboard following the ceremony until departure.

Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy represents a comprehensive and integrated framework for increased Canadian engagement across the Indo-Pacific region. Canada will continue to work alongside allies and partners in the region to promote a stable, secure, and prosperous Indo-Pacific.

Operation HORIZON is Canada’s ongoing forward presence mission to promote peace and stability in support of the rules-based international order in the Indo-Pacific. The new operation replaced the Indo-Pacific portion of Operation PROJECTION in summer 2023 , in line with Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy. All naval activities formerly conducted under Operation PROJECTION Indo-Pacific, along with new activities conducted by the Canadian Army, Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) , Special Forces Command, and other CAF elements, are now conducted under Operation HORIZON .

HMCS Montréal is a Halifax Class Frigate. Halifax-class frigates have a crew of approximately 240 personnel comprising RCN sailors as well as RCAF aviators to fly and support the ship’s embarked CH-148 Cyclone maritime helicopter.

Not a Starship not afloat: Once stuck-in-ice vessel is now on bottom of St. John River

Owner has until end of month to remove it, previous owner heartbroken over demise.

sailboat sails canada

Social Sharing

The owner of a sunken sailboat has until the end of the month to get it out of the water, according to a deadline set by Transport Canada.

The department "has determined that the Not a Starship vessel has the potential to present a hazard to navigation, and a deadline of April 30, 2024, has been set for its removal," Transport Canada communications adviser Katherine Proulx said in an email.

She said the department is working with the owner to make sure the sailboat is removed in a "responsible manner."

"If the deadline isn't met, the vessel will be deemed as abandoned under the Wrecked, Abandoned or Hazardous Vessels Act, and the owner could face enforcement actions, including monetary penalties."

Sailboat owner Jordan Tatton has not responded to several requests for an interview.

Not a Starship now not afloat

Local residents have expressed concern about the sailboat for months — even long before the river froze.

Rob Thom was one of them. The Greenwich resident said the sailboat was originally anchored in front of his home before two December storms dragged the boat to the cove in front of Beulah Camp.

He said he was worried about the environmental damage should the boat sink. The boat, after all, was equipped with a diesel engine, a generator and the batteries necessary to operate the solar panels.

Even at the time the boat first started to sink, the Coast Guard said it wasn't concerned about pollution.

Within days, spokesperson Debbie Buott-Matheson said there was a "minimal amount of non-persistent oils" on the vessel, meaning the type of fuel on board would have evaporated from the surface of the water within 48 hours.

Side by side photos -- on left is a sail boat afloat and on the right is the same sailboat with only the tops of its masts showing.

The New Brunswick Department of Environment said it was not involved in the case. A spokesperson said Transport Canada and the Canadian Coast Guard are the lead agencies.

Thom is also concerned about the hazard the sunken vessel presents to boaters, especially with the 17-metre (56-foot) mast — and a second shorter one — protruding above the surface.

Although Thom has seen a few boats already on the water, he said the danger will increase significantly as the boat traffic increases with warmer weather.

Man in sunglasses stands in front of a body of water with a pole sticking out of the water, faintly visible in the distance.

As a member of the local fire department, he said they're not equipped or authorized to respond should someone strike the boat and need assistance.

"So when it comes out of the water, it'll be a sigh of relief for us for sure," he said.

'Gut punch' for previous owner

For residents who have been following the story of the Not a Starship , it's been a bit of a slow-motion train wreck, but for the boat's previous owner, it's been a "gut punch."

Trevor Laird said someone he didn't know sent him a message through LinkedIn and said simply, "Somebody sank your boat."

"I was floored to be honest. I told my wife — it almost brought tears to her eyes."

He said the boat is "a one-of-a-kind."

sailboat sails canada

Watch the saga of the scuttled sailboat, from start to sunk

"Not a Starship is essentially a boat built with love. It's a handcrafted ship that doesn't match anything else that's been made or mass manufactured."

And its name is a bit of an inside joke for the Lairds. As "space nerds," they would often travel to see SpaceX's Starship rocket launches.

When SpaceX's founder Elon Musk famously created and sold flamethrowers, it created a bit of a stir because of the potential dangers of putting the devices into the hands of the public. Not long after, the product was renamed "not a flamethrower."

'Sacrifice to let her go'

The Lairds owned the boat for about 18 months and travelled on it extensively before selling it to Tatton last summer.

By then, they had moved to Texas and shipping the boat was just too expensive to entertain, explained Laird.

He said it was a "sacrifice to let her go," but he didn't want anything bad to happen to it in storage — "which is ironic now."

Two masts sticking out of the water in a river, far from shore.

Laird said he feels especially bad for the man who sold him the boat. He said the man had taken 10 years to painstakingly rebuild and refurbish the boat.

The man put it back in the water in 1999 and spent the next 20 years travelling all around Canada with his family.

Laird said his own family created incredible memories in the relatively short time they owned the boat, travelling mostly along the St. John River and south along the Atlantic coast into the United States.

Double-masted sailboat submerged in ice nearly to the top of the roof of the cabin and surrounded by a circle of brownish water and then white ice outside the circle.

"It was an adventure of a lifetime for us. We wanted to find something that got us outside all together, a skill that we could all learn together. … We all did that together. We all learned together. So it was great memories as a family and just a bit of adventure, you know?

"I wish we could have taken it with us, you know. I wish it was sitting right down here. I think we all wished that now."
