Hull, Deck & Superstructure Construction:

  • The yachts were designed to be exceptionally strongly built of steel in order that they could face all that the Southern Ocean might throw at them, with absolute confidence. The hulls are constructed of high tensile steel shell plating over “T” bar longitudinals and angle ring frames. A full depth skeg and ertalite bearings provide support for the steel rudder and good engineering ensures absolute reliability.

  • The stainless steel fuel, water and sullage tanks are provided with good access for cleaning. The International Paint coating systems are the best that current paint technology can provide with the result that on return from the world’s toughest yacht race, the yachts looked as if they had returned from a summer cruise.
  • Above the waterline, the hull and deck are lined with approximately 60 mm of sprayed Polyurethane foam to provide thermal and sound insulation. The extensive use of Warerite laminates in the interior fit out, ensure light, bright accommodation, which is easy to maintain and keep clean. Maple hull liners and Afrormosa trim are highlighted by the white bulkheads and provide a warm comfortable feel to the accommodation.

Serious Mile Muncher Challenge 67, WHIRLWIND is for Sale

February 27th, 2024

Serious Mile Muncher Challenge 67, WHIRLWIND is for Sale

Challenge 67’ WHIRLWIND was built in 1992 by Devonport Dockyard to designs by David Thomas. One of the first of 2 fleets of Challenge 67s to be commissioned by Chay Blyth’s Challenge Business, conceived and built to one design race around the planet against prevailing currents; following his single-handed voyage aboard the original BRITISH STEEL.

challenge-67-whirlwind-is-for-sale-2

The 67s are even today known as the British Steel boats, as British Steel were the main sponsor for the first races supplying the steel for the hulls and the stainless steel for the superstructures. These yachts have won hearts and minds the world over.

History of Challenge 67, WHIRLWIND

WHIRLWIND then sailed with the UKSA who were her second owners, munching miles and teaching sailors about ocean sailing.

challenge-67-whirlwind-is-for-sale-3

Her current owners are a sailing school in France and WHIRLWIND continues with this good work. She has been much updated and is kept in ocean ready condition.

Exploring the Accommodation & Deck Equipment of Challenge 67, WHIRLWIND

The Challenge 67 is not intended for short-handed sailing. She has space enough for 14 and there are no furling or other labour saving devices aboard. WHIRLWIND has an anchor windlass, originally she didn’t even have this on the basis that Challenge Yachts never stop. On deck she has a well-protected helm position and large cockpit, as well as easy to work wide side decks covered in non-slip TBS.

challenge-67-whirlwind-is-for-sale-4

Down below she as a small pilothouse house with chart table and some seating and a large wardrobe for oilskins and for access to the generator.

challenge-67-whirlwind-is-for-sale-5

Aft there is a saloon and galley with access to the machinery space beneath the pilothouse. Aft there are pilot berths.

challenge-67-whirlwind-is-for-sale-6

Forward there are two 3 berth cabins, two 2 berth cabins and 2 heads compartments with a simple shower arrangement and a large forepeak for sails.

challenge-67-whirlwind-is-for-sale-7

Some of the Challenge 67s were uprated to MCA Category 0. WHIRLWIND sails under the French flag so she has no need of this classification. She could be brought up to this specification, but it would involve the fitting of two additional bulkheads. This work has been done to other Challenge 67s.

WHIRLWIND offers masses of capability for adventure sailing, exploration, and also of course for sail training, something that she has focused on in this ownership and the one before. She was built to withstand the rigours of the Southern Ocean and 30 years on she is putting up a very good account of herself and she is ready for more oceans.

An Insight into the Current Plans for Challenge 67, WHIRLWIND

WHIRLWIND will continue with her sail training programme until she finds her new owner.
