A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

anyone have experience with the sunbird 16?

I am looking at buying my first sail boat and this seems to be a great option with my limited budget. It's comes with new sails, 55kw trolling motor, paddles, trailer, Etc. only problem is after market trim the owner put on there that I'll have to replace or cover the holes from. Other than that I can't see any problems in picking it up to clean tomorrow to see the rest, then I am test driving her this weekend. So please just tell me should I steer clear from this boat or is a great boat? I love that I can beach her and go on islands of id like and I love the cabin it has even though it's small. Iare there better options for 1000 and under? I can probably get this for 500 I think!

Replacing a Sunbird Centerboard Pennant

The centerboard pennant on my new-to-me AMF Sunbird snapped this weekend, and I'm trying to figure out how to replace it. I found this older thread , but the Yahoo group referenced doesn't seem to be active, so I can't access the documents hosted there. So, I'm wondering if anyone can help me: How does the pennant attach to the centerboard? I'm either going to beach the boat and roll it over or find a lift to access the bottom, and I want to make sure I have everything I need ready to go for the repair. I'm new to the forum and grateful for any help you all may be able to offer! AB
Is it Sunbird 16? Should not be that hard to replace CB pennant. Most pennants attach to the board through a small shackle. If you can do it safely with some help, rolling it on a side may be the easiest thing. not much to it. Just make sure the pennant runs the way it is supposed to (sometimes there is a block inside the CB housing through which it is looped).
Yeah, it's a Sunbird 16. Thank you very much for this advice. The boat had some kind of braided plastic line (no wonder it broke), which I'll replace with a better line. Any idea how the line might be attached to the centerboard?
I would buy a Dyneema line with an eye already on it (look under synthetic winch rope). The eye attaches to a hole in the side of the CB with a stainless steel shackle. You really need to pull the CB all the way out to get an idea how it all goes together. When the pennant is held in place (gripped) by the rope clutch, there is a lot of wear on that rope, so replacing it every few years is normal. The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Sunbird 16 is about 56 kg/cm, alternatively 318 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 56 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 318 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.
