Yacht, Superyacht, Megayacht…What’s the Difference?

A deep dive into yacht types.

In the very technical, precise, and number-loving world of yachting–be it hull length, maximum speed, year built, and so much more–there seems to be much confusion in the categories of yacht types. Those in and out of the yachting industry often hear the terms yacht, superyacht, and even megayacht thrown around casually, and, quite often, interchangeably. So what is a superyacht, really? Is the term “yacht” all-encompassing? Is “gigayacht” really a thing? Do exact numbers come into play? Read on for a deep dive into the different types of yachts.

What Is a Yacht?

While the term “yacht” technically refers to any boat–sailing or motorized–that has sleeping accommodations aboard, the word is typically used for vessels under 80 feet in length. Usually used for pleasure, yachts can also be categorized as vessels specifically used for racing and/or cruising. While still the dream of many, the general term “yacht” usually refers to the “smaller” (we use that word very lightly) boats you may see cruising exotic locations.

What Is a Superyacht?

Much like a yacht, a superyacht is also a luxurious vessel used for pleasure; the distinction is in its size. Much of the confusion between whether a vessel falls under the yacht, superyacht, or even megayacht category is still pretty unclear amongst industry professionals. The numbers vary depending on who you ask. Generally speaking, though, a superyacht is usually a yacht whose length exceeds 80 feet. Since it’s all so unclear, we just like to think of it in approximate rather than exact terms: a superyacht is a really large yacht. Superyachts usually have a professional crew manning the vessel.

Megayacht: Myth or Fact?

But here’s where things get really puzzling. What really is “large”? Where on the spectrum do different yachts fall? And where does it end? Some industry experts have gone so far as to categorize some of the more massive yachts as “megayachts”. If “superyacht” wasn’t impressive enough, this added term has caused even more perplexity in the wide sea that is the yachting business. While the majority have not necessarily adopted this newer lingo, those that have usually use the term to roughly describe exceedingly large yachts, usually over 200 feet in length. Depending on who you ask, though, some pros argue that the term “megayacht” shouldn’t even be used.

Going Gaga for Gigayachts

If yacht categories weren’t confusing enough, plus the arguments over the term “megayacht”, some shipbuilders have recently gone one step further, despite it all, and adopted yet another term for the most gigantic, crème de la crème of yachts: gigayachts. While the lines for this category are so completely blurred, it seems that these colossal yachts usually teeter over the 220-foot mark. An important factor that those who actually use this term highlight is that gigayachts are almost always custom-built, with the owner personalizing the boat to his or her liking and preferences.

Does Size Really Matter?

Other than literal size–mostly gauged and compared by the length of the vessel–you may be wondering what really is the difference between all these types of yachts. Some may think: the bigger the better . This all depends on what you value most. Usually, the bigger the yacht, the bigger the crew. With more crew members available to maintain a ship and serve passengers, often the service aboard superyachts (and megayachts) is of the utmost level. On the flip side, some may feel that regular yachts are more their speed–literally; smaller yachts can sometimes reach speeds that larger vessels can’t match, upping the action. Others feel that the “smaller” (read: yet still big) yachts are more intimate, or even more livable. At the end of the boat day, it is all about personal preference. Just like all the other countless options in the yacht business, there’s more than enough to go around. There’s an ocean of options just waiting out there.

Project Sparta: The Megayacht Of The Future

The private yacht that offers everything.

The perfect marriage of bespoke luxury and ultra-efficient machinery, Project Sparta is the megayacht of the future. At 67-meters in length, her clever design asks for no compromises in either comfort or utility. Once finished, she will be the largest steel displacement motor yacht Heesen has ever built. The Dutch shipyard has announced that the construction of the superyacht began in Oct 2020 and is expected to be completed in 2023. 

Constantly pushing the boundaries of yacht crafting, Heesen has collaborated with Arcon Yachts of Monaco and Winch Designs to bring the floating masterpiece to life. Arcon Yachts serves as the Owner’s technical advisors and project managers of the full-custom yacht’s construction. Andrew Winch’s interior and exterior design ingenuity has maximized every inch of the vessel’s space while still maintaining an elevated look. Project Sparta features Winch’s signature sleek lines and ultra-modern yet classic touches. 

More than just her looks, Project Sparta utilizes Perry van Oossanen’s patented fast displacement hull form (FDHF) to guarantee a hyper-efficient yet smooth and comfortable journey. She has an internal volume of approximately 1,200 gross tons, and her elegant engine room houses two MTU 12V4000 M65R diesel engines. The mega-yacht will reach a top speed of 16 knots and cut through the seas with a transatlantic cruising range of 4,500 nautical miles at 12 knots. Her crew will operate her from a raised pilothouse, lending itself to a more streamlined and sporty profile.

THE PRIVATE YACHT THAT OFFERS EVERYTHING

Project Sparta comfortably hosts 12 guests, two staff members, and 14 crew members. The bridge deck is reserved for the Owner and is composed of two suites and a private outdoor lounge. The main deck houses four guest suites. Winch Designs has shown off his utilitarian side by incorporating a sliding partition that seamlessly transforms two of the front-facing suites into a full beam VIP suite–a feature unusual for a vessel of its size. There is no wasted space and no compromises in comfort found on this go-anywhere-sized vessel. Winch Designs has rightfully deemed Project Sparta a “pocket mega-yacht.” 

The stepped aft deck houses a 6.5-meter Infinity pool, and the top sundeck features a bar and jacuzzi. An offset spiral staircase wraps around a glass elevator that connects all three decks. The lower deck is home to crew quarters and a wellness sanctuary that includes an oval jacuzzi, sauna, gym, and steam room. 

PROJECT SPARTA EMBARKS ON THE ULTIMATE MAIDEN VOYAGE 

Project Sparta’s maneuverability means nearly unlimited opportunities to discover the world’s most exotic and far-flung destinations. Her 2023 maiden voyage will include stops at shipyards in the following most desirable destinations:

1.) THE MEDITERRANEAN 

The Mediterranean’s gorgeous coastlines will perfectly complement the yacht’s sleek and super sporty profile. Optimal mooring opportunities abound in this premier yachting destination, with possible dockings along the Amalfi Coast or perhaps a long tour through Northern Sardinia for breathtaking views and some of the  best cuisine  Italy has to offer. 

2.)  FJORDS OF NORWAY AND THE LOFOTEN ISLES

Project Sparta was destined to navigate Norway’s vast network of waterways. Her compact size and hyper-efficient machinery will allow her to move deftly through the deep fjords, letting her get up close and personal with its magnificent glaciers. The landscape drenched with untamed mountains and wildlife will offer an abundance of activities for the owner, including fishing, mountaineering, kayaking, and canyoning. 

3.) THE CARIBBEAN AND BAHAMAS

During the winter months, Project Sparta and her Owner will warm themselves along the sun-soaked coastlines of the Caribbean. Here, there will be plenty of opportunities to sunbathe on the yacht’s spacious decks, snorkel in the crystalline waters, and take in the warm breeze while entertaining friends and family at the top deck bar. Project Sparta will have no trouble maneuvering between the more than 700 islands the Bahamas has to offer–each with its distinct personality and offerings. 

4.) AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND

After her inaugural launch in February 2022, followed by successful sea trials in April, the official name of the highly-anticipated 160m (525ft) Lürssen mega yacht has now been unveiled as superyacht BLUE as she gets ready to depart the German yard’s facilities in Bremen and head to the Mediterranean following the handover to her Owners.

The impressive 15,320 GT yacht features exterior and interior styling by the esteemed British studio Terence Disdale Design, while naval architecture comes from Lürssen ’s in-house team. Showcasing the yard’s pedigree sleek exterior contours, she sports a crisp white hull and superstructure with extensive glazing across her four upper decks, giving her a sharp and elegant profile.

Efficiency and the desire to be as environmentally friendly as possible were key drivers for the technology on board.

While few details thus far have been revealed, what we do know is that on-board features include a pair of helicopter landing sites, comprising a large helideck at the bow and a smaller helipad aft, as well as an extensive swim platform providing guests with seamless access to the water. This area also adjoins a beach club.

Motor yacht BLUE  boasts an array of al fresco relaxing and social living spaces across her decks, courtesy of her vast 22m (74ft) beam, as well as a crowd-pleasing Jacuzzi on her sun deck. 

Accommodation is rumoured to be for 48 guests across 24 cabins ensuring a variety of guest party configurations.

The superyacht will be the world’s 4th largest yacht, and 2nd largest in terms of gross tonnage, behind another Lürssen superyacht, DILBAR , which has a volume of 15,917 GT and was delivered back in 2016.

Jeff Bezos and Bernard Arnault are worth a combined $400 billion — here are the routes they took to achieve mega-wealth

Jeff Bezos and Bernard Arnault are the world's two richest people, with a combined net worth of around $400 billion.

Arnault, the owner of the luxury goods conglomerate LVMH, is ranked first on Bloomberg's Billionaires Index, with a net worth of $202 billion. He's the CEO and chair of the French luxury conglomerate with companies spanning fashion, jewelry, watches, perfume, and alcohol, including brands Tiffany & Co and Dom Pérignon. Amazon founder Bezos is ranked second on the index, with a net worth of $197 billion. Although both billionaires have built their own empires, how the pair acquired wealth is vastly different. This is how they made their fortunes:

Jeff Bezos’ first job was at a McDonald’s.

The billionaire said in a 2001 interview with Fast Company that his job at a McDonald's restaurant in Miami was "really hard."

"They wouldn't let me anywhere near the customers. This was my acned-teenager stage. They were like, 'Hmm, why don't you work in the back?'" Bezos said.

Bezos majored in computer science at Princeton University.

A book called "The Everything Store: Jeff Bezos and the Age of Amazon" said he joined a telecommunications startup called Fitel after graduating from Princeton. He then quit Fitel and went to work for Bankers Trust as a product manager, where he focused on selling software pension-fund clients. After two years at Bankers Trust, he joined the hedge fund D. E. Shaw, and became a senior vice president after only four years.

He left his hedge fund job in 1994 to start what would become Amazon.

Bezos decided books were the best products to start selling online. He then started Amazon.com in a garage in Seattle. Amazon sold books to people in all 50 US states and more than 45 countries in the first month of its launch.

Amazon went public in 1997.

In March 1997, Amazon had about 80,000 average daily visits , TechCrunch reported. It had only 256 employees that year. In the years that followed, Amazon extended its product range beyond books to include electronics, tools, toys, CDs, and more. Bezos invested $250,000 in Google in 1998, before its IPO in 2004. Time Magazine then named Bezos as its Person of the Year in 1999 after Amazon rapidly grew. Bezos had the same annual base salary of $81,840 for decades while he was CEO, but his annual total compensation for many years exceeded $1 million, owing to costs related to security and business travel.

Bezos founded space tourism company Blue Origin in 2000.

He also bought The Washington Post for $250 million in 2013.

He became the world's richest person for the first time in 2017, briefly overtaking Microsoft's Bill Gates. That same year, he said he'd sell $1 billion worth of Amazon stock annually to fund Blue Origin, per Reuters.

Bezos announced he was stepping down as Amazon’s CEO in 2021

After spending 27 years leading the company, Bezos announced he was transitioning to become Amazon's executive chairman.

Amazon hit nearly $575 billion in net sales in 2023.

The company has hundreds of fulfillment centers around the world. It sells millions of products, including appliances, clothing, groceries, and toiletries, and it also offers cloud computing services. Bezos reportedly owns a $500 million megayacht , which set sail last summer. But in 2022, he pledged to give away most of his wealth to charity, CNN reported at the time. Amazon had a market cap of $1.8 trillion in February.

Arnault started out working for his father's construction company after college.

After studying engineering at the École Polytechnique , Arnault went to work for his father's construction firm Ferret-Savinel, Bloomberg reported .

Arnault acquired Agache-Willot-Boussac in 1984, which was verging on bankruptcy.

The company owned brands like French department store Bon Marché and Christian Dior, The New York Times reported. He renamed the firm Financière Agache and kickstarted a turnaround effort, which helped it earn $1.9 billion in revenue just a few years later, the Times reported . He bought a chunk of capital of the French luxury fashion house Celine in the late 1980s. Years later, it was integrated into the LVMH group .

He went on to become LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton’s largest shareholder.

Champagne company Dom Pérignon was one of the initial brands part of Moët Hennessy, which later merged with Louis Vuitton to create LVMH in 1987. He spent $2.6 billion buying up shares to become the company's largest shareholder and eventually its chairman and CEO by 1989, per The Times. Arnault quietly built a 20.2% stake in Hermès in the years that followed through its subsidiaries and equity swaps, Bloomberg reported.

His 5 children also work for LVMH and its brands.

In 2011, he acquired the Italian jewelry brand Bulgari when it was struggling, Reuters reported. LVMH now owns more than 75 brands, its website says.

The luxury goods group made €86.2 billion in 2023.

Arnault said in January, when its earnings were released, "Our performance in 2023 illustrates the exceptional appeal of our Maisons and their ability to spark desire despite a year affected by economic and geopolitical challenges." It seems like Arnault has no plans to slow down. He told The Financial Times in 2019, "we're just getting started."

Zelenograd and New Moscow are two large parts of Moscow city, that lie (often far) outside consolidated residential zone of the city, which lies within and just beyond the MKAD (Moscow Ring Road).

Zelenograd was added in Moscow in 1968 as one of the leading scientific centers. New Moscow was added to Moscow in 2012, forming Novomoskovky and Troitskiy Administrativniy Okrugs with plans of new vast expansion. New Moscow territory is yet to change according to its new city status. Even though suburbial kind construction intensifies in Novomoskovsky Administrativniy Okrug, Troitskiy Administrativniy Okrug still mostly has a rural feel.

By plane [ edit ]

Vnukovo and Ostafyevo airports are situated in New Moscow proper, though from Ostafyevo airport you still have to go through the "old" Moscow. It is possible to get from Sheremetyevo to Zelenograd without going to the old city - you have to change to 400 minibus on Leningrad highway or on local train on Planernaya. From Domodedovo airport you'll have to go through the old city anyway (the route through Domodedovo and Podolsk will take more time).

By train [ edit ]

Local trains connect Zelenograd with Leningrad Train Station, Tver, Klin and Konakovo. Local trains from Kiev Train Station pass through northern part of New Moscow between Novoperedelkino and Krekshino. To go to Zosimova Pustyn you may want to go all the way to Bekasovo, but trains there are infrequent. It is possible to get to New Moscow through Podolsk, but you'll have to change to bus there.

By bus [ edit ]

Most frequent bus to Zelenograd is bus 400 from Rechnoi Vokzal. It has special pricing. Buses are primary way of public transport to get to New Moscow, new buses are often added. Most buses start from Yugo-Zapadnaya and Tepliy Stan metroes, and Podolsk train station. Troitsk serves as a bus hub.

By car [ edit ]

Zelenograd is accessible by M10 highway. Major highways in New Moscow are M3, A101, Warsaw highway Podolsk - Kresty (joining with A101), first "Beton Ring" A107 and Borovsk highway Peredelkino - Vnukovo - to join with M3. M10 and A101 are often highly congested, M3 may be less prone to it, except Moscow vicinity, and crossing with A107, A107 is congested near M3 crossing, which is northwest of New Moscow; Warsaw highway is congested in Podolsk, and you'll have to pass congested M2 to get there from MKAD.
