Kollegewidgwok Yacht Club
Play in the heart of downtown baltimore, marina info.
The club was founded in 1924 by Seth Milliken for his children and their friends, and its first members were mostly under the age of 15. From that time to the present, the club has put "teaching children to sail" very high on its agenda. In 2003, the flourishing Junior Program was spun off into its own nonprofit, the Kollegewidgwok Sailing and Education Association (KSEA), with a mandate to teach sailing to as many children of the Blue Hill Peninsula as possible, whether or not their parents might be members of the club.

KOLLEGEWIDGWOK YACHT CLUB
Blue Hill, Maine, is named after the wild blueberries growing in profusion on the flanks of the eponymous mound that overlooks the town--and the lovely protected bay that provides great racing, with flat seas and consistently good breezes. Atlantics have sailed at Kollegewidgwok YC for more than 80 years, and the club currently has the largest existing fleet with 21 boats. Summer residents race their boats in a limited season from July to August. The fleet has a long history of family sailing, and has produced many fine women skippers over the years as well as three national champions i n the past six years.

Maine , Mt Desert and Bays
Photo: visitmaine.com
All too many cruisers intent on heading Downeast to more remote destinations or directly west on their way home make the mistake of not taking the time to detour north and explore all that Blue Hill Bay has to offer. The bay is open to the Gulf of Maine at the southern end, defined by the Bass Harbor light on the east, and by (outer) Long Island, Swan’s Island, and the Flye Island Light on the west. It is divided into two roughly equal halves by (inner) Long and Tinker’s Islands. As one progresses about ten miles north from the Flye Island light, the bay tapers towards the iconic entrance to Blue Hill Harbor and the charming town of Blue Hill -- all presided over by the eponymous Blue Hill Mountain. (With a peak at just 940 feet above sea level, it is technically not quite a mountain). The town was initially settled in the mid-1700s, with early industries including lumber, granite (some was used to build the Brooklyn Bridge and New York Stock Exchange), and shipbuilding.
Approach & Cautions
Photo: Tom H - Flickr
Blue Hill Bay is wide and deep, protected, with generally predictable afternoon summer breezes. The bay is unencumbered by many unexpected navigational challenges. Those that exist are well marked by government buoys, all well worth observing (especially the rocks north and south of Tinker’s Island, Harriman’s ledge off South Blue Hill, and Sand Point off (inner) Long Island, Darling’s rocks off East Blue Hill). There are a pair of charted but unmarked reefs on the western side of the inner bay, just north of the easily visible iconic Blue Hill Falls bridge. Entry into the harbor is safest by leaving BOTH cans #1 and #3 to port, then can #5 to port and nun #2 to starboard, rounding Sculpin Point, which can be submerged at high tide. Once inside the harbor, access to the main anchorage is straightforward; for the more curious seeking a bit more seclusion, there is a second smaller anchorage farther in, past can #7 and nun #2, just off the golf course.
There is a shortcut, the “fisherman’s channel,” coming in between Seal Rock and the flagpole on Sculpin Point to round can #5; for all but those with local knowledge or shallow draft, this may be a bit adventuresome. Using this approach, more than one experienced professional captain has experienced just how much harder the rocks become on an ebbing tide.

Docking, Anchorages, or Moorings
The harbor has become quite crowded, and moorings are strongly recommended. The Kollegewidgwok Yacht Club staff can be hailed (“KYC dock” on channel 9, 207-374-5581); they are responsive and will direct you to an appropriate mooring on a first-come-first-served basis ($45 per night; moorings for boats > 50 feet limited).

Getting Ashore
Photo: Jay Woodworth, Flickr
Dinghy to and tie up at the KYC dock. The challenge of getting into town is access. Dry-land alternatives to walking the two-mile trip are limited, with no reliably available rural taxi service. If the timing is right, there is dinghy access to the town dock by mid-tide, but do not tarry on the way home, as the mudflats extend quite a way out when the tide is ebbing.

Provisioning
Hannafords offers a comprehensive food/beverage/alcohol selection as well as a pharmacy, at 15 South St., up the hill past the Congregational Church and library. (207) 374-5137 Other options include the Blue Hill Co-Op and Merrill & Hinckley’s.
Photo: Marlintini's
- Arborvine (33 Tenney Hill, 207-374-2119) has a well-deserved reputation for really superb fine dining; it gets very crowded in the summer, and reservations made well ahead of time are recommended.
- Marlintini’s (20 Main St., 207-374-2500) is much less formal with food that is much better than you might expect from its sports bar ambience.
- The Fish Net (162 Main St., 207-374-5240) is an excellent spot for take-out/dine-in lobster/clam/scallop/fish/chicken with superior shakes and fries.

The main attraction for many is a climb up the mountain. Several trails can be accessed in town, just behind the Post Office. On a clear day, the 1-2 hour hike is rewarded with magnificent views — from Camden Hills (west) to Mount Desert (east) and the entire coast in between. Walking up the hill to Hannafords is also a significant hike on a hot summer day!

Other Things To Do
- Kneisel Hall is a world-class summer music school offering COVID-sensitive chamber music performances throughout the season. Art galleries (Mitchell-Nevin, Serge Liros, Cynthia Winning, Jud Hartmann) abound for casual and serious browsers.
- The annual Blue Hill Fair , a splendid combination of agrarian excellence and pure honky-tonk, takes place over the Labor Day weekend.
- Placentia Island, at the seaside opening of the bay, has a fascinating history, wonderfully chronicled in Peter Blanchard’s book, We Were an Island: the Maine Life of Art and Nan Kellam , describing a most unusual couple’s homesteading on this remote outpost starting in 1949.
OUR REVIEWS
What CCA Members are saying:
Having sailed in Blue Hill Bay for over seven decades, I could justifiably be accused of serious bias when I state that, in my opinion, this area remains one of the true uncut gems of the Maine coast.
Blue Hill is the prize that awaits you after a beautiful sail up the bay. Well-protected with beautiful views, a terrific grocery store (a 5-mile walk up the hill, but only 1/2-mile down :-)), and friendly people. Just be careful to time your dinghy ride to the town dock carefully--within a couple hours of high tide and you won't get stranded on the flats.

Old Yacht Club Transformation: A Modern Homage to Coastal Heritage
Discover the transformation of the Old Yacht Club into a breathtaking private residence by Elliott Architects in Blue Hill, ME. Originally built in 1919, this coastal gem combines the building’s historical essence with modern design elements, turning it into a unique home that pays homage to its past while providing contemporary living spaces and embracing the stunning sea vistas.
About Old Yacht Club
Reviving coastal heritage: the old yacht club transformation.
The Old Yacht Club, an architectural relic sitting at the edge of a picturesque Maine bay, has been given a new lease on life. Originally constructed in 1919 and left derelict for decades, this project by Elliott Architects in 2023 skillfully merges its storied past with a refreshing, modern aesthetic. The challenge lay in retaining the essence of its historical memory while equipping it for 21st-century living.
After a meticulous deconstruction of the original club room and chimney, piece by piece, the foundation was reinforced to meet current floodplain regulations. Rising from this enhanced base, a new wood and steel superstructure replicates the yacht club’s original silhouette. Within this frame, the heart of the club – the club room and chimney – was reborn, symbolizing a bridge between eras.
Architectural Dialogue: Bridging Old and New
The design philosophy behind the project anchors in a dialogue between past and present. The restoration involved careful integration of large sliding glass panels in place of a club room corner, and the addition of two glass dormers. This not only conserves the original structure’s spirit but also infuses the space with natural light, transforming it into a beacon of warmth along the coastal landscape. At night, this luminosity extends a symbolic reminder of the building’s rejuvenation.
A Journey Through Landscape and Memory
The redesigned landscape plays a significant role in the overall experience, guiding visitors through a sequence of meticulously crafted environments, from the arrival court to the sea-facing terrace. This path not only mirrors the ceremonial essence of the original yacht club’s setting but also emphasizes the symbiosis between the architectural form and its natural surroundings. The juxtaposition of modern elements with the rugged Maine coastline adds a layer of intrigue, inviting exploration and reflection.
In this remarkable transformation, Elliott Architects has not only preserved a piece of coastal heritage but has also introduced a model for thoughtful renovation and adaptation. The Old Yacht Club now stands as a testament to the belief that architecture can honor its past while boldly stepping into the future.

BLUE HILL, Maine — A property that played a pivotal role in the establishment of Blue Hill as a sailing and recreation destination will soon be a residence now that it has been purchased for $1.12 million.
Long in disuse and gutted of most everything except its walls and floors, the former Kollegewidgwok Yacht Club on Old Yacht Club Road in East Blue Hill will likely need another $1.12 million in renovations to become habitable, said Steve Shelton of Acadia Realty Group, which handled the sale. An out-of-state lawyer purchased the building and 4.3 acres around it on June 4.
The building is noteworthy as the first home of the yacht club, from 1922 to 1948, although it was never so much a yacht club as a place where children of well-to-do families spending their summers in Blue Hill learned how to sail and where sailors raced their boats.
[Subscribe to our free weekly Hancock County newsletter]
The club moved to its present home, a few miles away at 44 KYC Lane, in 1948. Today, the club hosts a half-dozen races annually, according to its website.
The former club building had been on the market intermittently for six or seven years and was a difficult sale to close, Shelton said.
“There’s no wiring, no plumbing and no water,” Shelton said. “It was a lot for somebody to undertake for not that big of a building.”
The 1,836-square-foot building is unique. Being built in 1919, when no planning regulations existed, the granite and stucco structure sits atop granite ledging that extends into the waters near Conary Point.
“It is especially rare to have that built right into the water and to be able to use it without having to tear it down,” Shelton said. “It was meant to be a dockhouse and a meeting room, but there was at least at one time a second floor where its caretaker lived.”
The new owner, whom Shelton declined to identify, plans to use the building as a summer home. The former owners, Joe and Marsha Henderson, declined to comment on the building.
The Hendersons, who bought the property in 1994, had planned to turn the building into a residence but got into another project and never finished rebuilding the old yacht club.
The new owner’s renovation will likely take at least a year, Shelton said.

Nightlife City Guide
Moscow: nightlife and clubs
Moscow nightlife: despite the freezing weather, the Russian capital gets hot as the sun goes down. Between discos, luxury, exaggerated parties and beautiful Russian girls, the Moscow nightlife offers everything you need for memorable nights.
Moscow nightlife
The city of Moscow is definitely one of the most interesting European cities: the stories about underground lines and secret bunkers, the architecture of its buildings, from the Kremlin to St. Basil's Cathedral, up to the Soviet style of the Seven Sisters and modern skyscrapers, make the Russian capital is a unique and fascinating city.
One of the many things that Moscow is famous for is its wild nightlife . Moscow never sleeps. If there is anything true about Russians, it is that they love to party! Despite its freezing weather, Moscow turns out to be a hot city with endless fun, hip nightclubs, extreme luxury, beautiful Russian girls and lots of booze when night falls!
In fact, in recent years, the Russian capital has definitively abandoned the gray period of communism and its inhabitants have given vent to their desire for fun. As you might expect in a city of over 12 million people, Moscow has an amazing array of nightlife options and a huge choice for all tastes, whether you are a jazz fan, hardcore clubbers or just plain old alcoholics. The nightlife in Moscow winds through a multitude of alternative and transgressive nightclubs where the watchword is to meet new people and spend a night of unbridled and uninhibited fun . In addition to the numerous discos, in the Russian capital there are also 20 casinos open until dawn. For those who want a break of intriguing relaxation, in the city of Moscow there are also numerous massage salons .
Most of Moscow's nightclubs contain a restaurant, a bar area and a nightclub (the larger ones also have bowling alleys, billiards and a casino!). Perhaps because Moscow is such a large metropolis with very cold temperatures and taxis are so expensive that the owners of the bars and clubs want to offer their customers an all in one place for night entertainment.
So, in other words, Moscow is not the best city in the world for bar-crawling, especially bearing in mind that these multipurpose venues often charge entrance, but rather it is better to carefully choose the club where to spend the night.
For a quieter and more sober evening, head for an evening stroll along the Via Arbat or the Red Square to be fascinated by the lights of the city and the grandeur of the buildings, and admire the shops and street artists. An alternative to experience Moscow's nightlife is to spend an evening of lyric, ballet or opera. The Russian capital is home to around sixty theaters, the most famous of which is the world-renowned Bolshoi Theater (Theater Square, 1, Moscow).
Moscow nightlife districts
Moscow's nightlife is not concentrated in a single district but is scattered throughout the city. However, there are areas with a greater concentration of bars and nightclubs .
The Krasnij Oktjabr (Russian for "Red October") complex, a red brick building located on the island in the center of the Moscow River that once housed a chocolate factory, is dotted with numerous trendy nightclubs and offers spectacular views of the river and the symbolic places of the Russian capital. This is where the most glamorous parties in Moscow take place, there are numerous bars, restaurants and art galleries.
Other neighborhoods with good nightlife are the old manufactory area near the Russian government building which houses some bars, the area around the Trubnaya metro and around Kuznetsky Most , while the Kurskaya groups the clubs with electronic music. We can also mention the area of the Patriarch's ponds, an area that is teeming with quiet bars.
Clubs and discos in Moscow
The crowd is very mixed. Students, young professionals, techno lovers, tourists all gather at Propaganda. Everyone comes to enjoy the music and have fun. It is one of the few clubs where the dancefloor dominates and there are hardly any tables, apart from a few that overlook the entire space. Propaganda is a restaurant until midnight. You can come earlier for dinner and stay for dancing. After midnight, the staff clears the tables from the dance floor and the whole place turns into a club. The place is different from the usual Moscow restaurant / club hybrids, however, because the atmosphere changes completely from "relaxed restaurant" to "underground electro club". Not to be missed.
There are more areas with different music. In the first area, expect a mix of traditional music and Russian pop songs. In the second, slightly larger area, there is live Russian pop music until 2am. After that it is mostly some kind of electronic music. The club is frequented by beautiful Russian girls around 18-25 years old, stunning students or models, and of course there is a good deal of young Russians, middle-aged men and foreign tourists trying their luck! Unlike many other nightclubs, the Icon is a pure nightclub and not a club turned into a restaurant. In any case, if you like to party in a big club and want to savor the typical Moscow nightlife , this is the perfect solution.
The crowd is the same as in other high-end Moscow clubs. Men are rarely under the age of 35 and are committed to giving the impression that money is not an issue. The women are amazing even by Moscow nightlife - if you want to meet Moscow's super models, this is the place! Ideal if you want to toast with the Moscow elite.
The club is located on two floors. The lower floor is mainly frequented by people hanging out at the bar and is good for conversation. The narrow stairs that perfectly fit the student atmosphere of the club take you to the main floor where the real party takes place, complete with a bedlam and girls dancing on the bar counter. In the summer months there is also an outdoor terrace. The place is always crowded and bouncers unnecessarily queue people - having a table or someone inside can be the key to skipping the queue. Otherwise, you might end up waiting half an hour or more. Come early or come back late if you want to avoid the crowds.
The crowd that frequents this club is quite mixed. People are less trendy and more underground. The place is suitable for afterhours, so most people arrive from 3am onwards.
Immediately upon entering, you will have the feeling that you have come to the local high school graduation prom instead of a real Moscow nightclub. There is no real interior design, but basically just a large hall with a stage and a bar. The crowd is almost entirely made up of teenagers and young people. Not many of the teens speak English, but it probably doesn't matter after all the alcohol. The music ranges from Russian pop and hip-hop to the most famous international hits. Perfect if you want to party and drink alcohol in one of the cheapest clubs in Moscow .
Here too, it's full of beautiful girls and it's also a great place to hit them off, as those who come here are notoriously more approachable. The advice is to be very firm with the girls who approach and to make your intentions clear. If you want to be 100% sure to get in, come at 2am when the club is still uncrowded.
Oblaka plays a mix of Russian and international pop music. Occasionally, as in many other clubs, there are performances by Russian pop singers. As is often the case in these types of clubs, the music and DJ are not the best but the guests don't seem to care.
Moscow's bars and pubs
The bar looks similar but still distinctly different than regular Moscow posh clubs. Most of the people who frequent this place are over 25, and you can find everything from young professionals to creative types to self-proclaimed models. Great if you want to see the "real Muscovites" celebrate without the overblown flashes of wealth. The proposed music is a strange mix of old and new commercial songs and Russian pop.
Downstairs is a large open space that opens its doors wide in the summer. The interior is rustic, yet elegant, with wooden furnishings and plenty of seating. The interior combined with Ugolek's popularity creates a crowded yet intimate atmosphere, especially on weekends. People come to chat, drink and eat. The upstairs bar has a more welcoming atmosphere. It is smaller, with soft lighting and armchairs to be able to relax. On weekends there is a DJ who mixes electronic music and transforms the bar into a relaxed place, ideal for the pre-party.
