Cassis Yacht Charter

Considered the westernmost point of the French Riviera , a Cassis yacht charter holiday and the adjacent Parc National des Calanques are often included in a South of France luxury yacht charter, both for the beautiful scenery and peace and quiet at the height of the summer season.

The numerous sheltered inlets called calanques are perfect anchorages for an evening surrounded by stunning natural rock formations, crystal blue water and luscious forests home to a variety of native birds. The deep calanques allow for younger members of the group to learn how to use the water toys in a sheltered environment without the worry of strong currents; snorkel in lagoons, fish and kayak spending quality family time together.

Find your own secluded sandy beach accessible only by boat and settle in for an afternoon of sunbathing and adventure with the water toys, then dine on your deserted beach as you watch the stars appear in unpolluted skies.

Scuba divers will be spoiled for choice when it comes to dive-site diversity, particularly around Calanque d'En-Vau. Beginners can earn their diving licence encountering a variety of fish and corals, while more experienced divers can test their skills with numerous cave dives such as Résurgence de Port-Miou or La Grotte à Corail de Cassis.

As an additional benefit, Cassis is located between the cultural cities of Marseilles and Toulon so superyacht charterers won't have to cruise far to enjoy a fun day of activities with high end shopping, authentic French restaurants and vibrant nightlife.

Marinas in the area tend to be smaller yet plentiful in number and Calanque de Port-Miou and Vallat Des Brayes marinas are ideal for facilities near the town of Cassis. As an alternative, La Ciotat Port remains close to the national park and provides berthing facilities for mega yachts.

Season & Weather:

The weather in Cassis and the surrounding national park is wonderfully warm from May until the start of October, and visitors will enjoy average temperatures of 25°C/77°F during the summer months with a cooler 16°C/61°F in spring and autumn. The months of May through to September provide the most daylight hours (10-12), peaking in July at 12 hours. May to August are the driest months most suited to a superyacht charter, while September through to November is the wettest season.

Sea temperatures throughout the year remain stable around 14°C/57°F in winter and a maximum of 24°/75°F in summer for a warm and refreshing swim.

A yacht rental to the Calanques in Marseille invites the curious and adventurous charterers. This itinerary off the beaten track will take you to one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in the south of France.

A few miles away from Marseille lies the hidden paradise of the Calanques. Accessible only by boat or with good hiking shoes, these beautiful inlets are carved into white limestone and boast crystal-clear waters. Magnificent cliffs rise up and line a turquoise sea, offering visitors a show of rare beauty. Chartering a yacht is the ideal way to explore the Calanques. The landscapes are indeed even more striking seen from the sea and you can easily visit the coves one after the other. Exploring Cassis makes a great addition to your yacht charter in the Calanques. 7 Day Cassis and Bandol Bareboat Yacht Charter Itinerary

7 Day Cassis and Bandol Bareboat Yacht Charter Itinerary Yacht Charter Itinerary - Discover Port Pin Rolland, Embiez, Cassis, Morgiou, Marseille, La Ciotat and Bandol

Day 1: Port Pin Rolland & Embiez Island | Day 2: Cassis | Day 3: Calanque de Morgiou | Day 4: Marseille | Day 5: La Ciotat | Day 6: Bandol | Day 7: Bandol to Port Pin Rolland

7 Day Porquerolles Bareboat Yacht Charter Itinerary Overview

The South of France is a fantastic destination to charter a luxury yacht; the less explored part of the Côte D'Azur including Marseille, Cassis and Bandol, is a welcome retreat from the bustle of destinations such as Nice and Cannes; while being less touristic, these destinations still retain a lively atmosphere with numerous activities to choose from and exquisite wines and food! Have a look at this itinerary to get an insight into what you could be doing on a yacht charter holiday along the French Riviera.

Day 1:  Port Pin Rolland to Embiez Island

france,riviera,yacht,charter,sea,boat

Starting your French Riviera bareboat yacht charter at Port Pin Rolland, take the time to become accustomed to your yacht and settle in. Once you've had time to get your bearings, set off towards Embiez Island; this little island is dedicated to nature and therefore there are no cars, only bikes and a number of small electric vehicles; if you wish to explore, a bike would be the best option! The striking tranquillity of Embiez Island makes it truly unique; the island is protected and therefore a number of wild birds such as Herons and Kingfishers can be spotted. The swimming is quite rocky, however, the water is beautifully clear and calm. There are a few shops around the port, as well as secluded coves; dine on your aft deck for your first evening to make the most of your time onboard.

Day 2: Embiez Island to Cassis

france,riviera,yacht,charter,sea,boat,cassis

Leaving Embiez Island, head towards Cassis, anchoring at Pampelonne Bay to discover the old harbour that hosts a magnificent Citadel. The city of Cassis has a few distinct quarters; the old colourful fishing port, the fisherman's quarter which features winding alleyways and the bourgeois quarter, lined with 16th and 17th-century houses. The Chateau de Cassis is well worth a visit before perhaps going to the Michelin starred La Villa Madie restaurant; with an ocean view and the finest food being served, this is sure to be a delightful meal. For an after-dinner drink, make your way to the Divino wine bar to sample some of the local vino!

Day 3: Cassis to Calanque de Morgiou

france,riviera,yacht,charter,sea,boat,morgiou

After a morning of relaxing, venture onto the famous Calanque de Morgiou, the largest of its kind between Marseille and Cassis -  Calanques  are narrow, steep-walled inlets that are famously found in the Mediterranean. With beautifully clear waters and the fact they are best accessed by boat, they are rarely busy and perfect for swimming or diving. Try out the water toys onboard your yacht, or snorkel around the inlet to see some of the marine life inhabiting the area! The scenery is breathtaking; there is an underwater grotto called Cosquer cave that you can explore, or a pebble beach to sunbathe on. If you dare, try jumping into the sea off one of the many rocky platforms!

Day 4: Morgiou to Marseille Old Port

food,aperol,drinks,table,meal

Departing from the Calanque de Morgiou, cruise to Marseille, where you will take a mooring slip in the Old Port. At the port's southern quay, you'll find a myriad of restaurants, shops, brasseries and cafés to indulge in. Explore the famous fish market on the Quai des Belges before heading to le Jardin du Pharo - the perfect sunset spot. Sample the world-famous Bouillabaisse at one of the quayside restaurants before heading to the jazz bar Le Pelle Mêle for some cocktails and jazz music; if you don't want the night to end there, head further into Marseille and party at one of the many big clubs open until the early hours of the morning!

Day 5: Marseille Old Port to La Ciotat

france,riviera,yacht,charter,sea,boat

After a morning perusing Marseille's Old Port, climb back aboard to move onto La Ciotat; known as the birthplace of the French game Pétanque, this charming town has been a port city for over 500 years, and this becomes apparent as you enter the pleasure boat harbour filled with many impressive yachts. The sights here are simply stunning, such as le Cap de l'Aigle (Eagle's Cap) and the stretches of beaches, perfect for a swim or to bronze yourself. The charming old port boasts a number of chic wine bars, where you can have a refreshing drink before dining at Le Table des Nans, where the food is wonderful, as is the view.

Day 6: La Ciotat to Bandol

wine,vineyard,drink,france,bandol,grapes

Enjoy a leisurely morning swim before departing from La Ciotat, moving onto the famous wine region of Bandol; here you can take the time to go on a wine tour before exploring the town, dotted with cheap and cheerful shops, or alternatively going to the beach which boasts great facilities. There are many fine restaurants in Bandol - Les Oliviers is a Michelin starred restaurant, perfect for an evening of exquisite dining with remarkable sea-facing views. Make the most of an evening aboard your yacht following your meal with perhaps some more Bandol wine, before settling in for your final night.

Day 7: Bandol to Port Pin Rolland

On your final day, leave Bandol and cruise to Port Pin Rolland, making the most of the last few hours on your yacht. Disembark from Port Pin Rolland having had an incredible holiday unlike any other, and get in touch with one of our brokers to start planning the next one!

Cassis, France - Ultimate guide

The cote d’azur is a well trodden holiday destination. However, most people will stick to the large metropolitan areas like Marseille , Aix-en-Provence and Nice . If you’re looking for a Provençal village experience, you’ll need to explore a little bit further out. One of our favourite options for this is Cassis, less than an hour from Marseille by public transport. This village has it all. From a quaint harbour town to endless outdoor opportunities in the neighbouring national park with some of the most unique landscapes you’ll see in the French Riviera.

Our guide to Cassis and the Calanques covers everything you’ll need to know to plan a perfect trip to this outstanding area. We include what to budget, how to get there, where to stay and all the best things to see and do.

If you’re looking for more guides to southern France we have plenty available. Guides include a 10 day south of France itinerary (by public transport), city guides to Nice , Menton , Marseille , Cassis , Villefranche-sur-Mer , and Monaco , and a guide to the best day trips from Nice .

Travel For Working People

Thanks for visiting! We're Bec & Michael and we are two hard working lovers of travel! We hope our words inspire you to travel the world without having to toss out your career!

Tip: avoid the biggest mistake we made. If you ask for water at a restaurant they will give you bottled still or sparkling water. They will never bring you free tap water. To save yourself the money, ask for a carafe of water by saying the following  ‘carafe d’eau s’il vous plaît’.

Why visit Cassis and the Calanques

Cassis is located in the Mediterranean in the south of France , only 30km from the bustling city of Marseille . Although it’s conveniently close to large metropolitan areas (including Aix-en-Provence as well), it feels like another world with a quieter pace and a more relaxed atmosphere set in a typical Provençal village.

One of the biggest draw cards for Cassis is its proximity to the incredible Calanques National Park. A day trip to Cassis and the Calanques was actually the reason we visited Marseille in the first place. The Calanques are located within a national park but are surprisingly easy to access. A Calanque is a natural inlet surrounded by steep rocky outcrops. The Calanques at Cassis have impressive limestone jutting out over turquoise water. It is one of the most beautiful landscapes we saw while visiting the south of France .

More than just the Calanques however, Cassis has a charming old town and absolutely stunning and sophisticated beaches. To get the most out of your time here I would suggest three days. This will give you a chance to see the Calanques from the water, another day to hike through the national park and the rest of the time wandering through the pretty streets or relaxing on the water.

What to see and do in Cassis

Walk around the town and port  .

It’s worth taking some time to look around this beautiful town. If you’re visiting on a Wednesday or a Friday there will be a quaint little market in the centre between 8.00am and 1:00pm. Cassis village is very compact and can be experienced in half a day. But it oozes charm and has one of the most beautiful ports we saw in the French Riviera.

The village itself is ancient, dating back to Roman times with first signs of habitation dating between 500-600BC. The fortified village was built to exploit the local opportunities for fishing and hunting and is still a fishing port today. At night you will be able to witness the old Carolingian castle light up, situated on a hilltop overlooking the village.

The little streets in the old town are mostly pedestrian only. This makes it a really pleasant place to explore the local boutiques and gelato stands. The location of Cassis means that most restaurants here have extensive seafood menus with rotating catch of the day’s. Make sure to spend a long lunch soaking it all up in one of the incredible terrace restaurants in the old town or along the harbour. After lunch be sure to order a Creme de Cassis, a sweet liqueur made from blackcurrants (Cassis means blackcurrants in French) that is used in a very popular cocktail called kir.

Cassis old town and market

Visit the beach

The most famous beach in Cassis is Plage de la Grande Mer, a quick 5 minute walk from the port. This beach is incredibly spacious and sandy so you don’t need to worry about having shoes or a beach mat. It has all the amenities you could need including toilets, showers, a restaurant, and lifeguards on duty. It’s also cleaned every day! Just beware that this beach does get incredibly crowded during the high season.

We really enjoyed Plage du Bestouan however. It is a 10 minutes walk from the port to this pretty little beach. This beach has the easiest access to the water in the area. Further up the Calanques, the coast is mostly rocky with no real beaches. We made the mistake of stopping at Same Same beach bar. This was without a doubt the most expensive Aperol Spritz of my life! We would suggest you skip it and just spend some time on the pretty little public beach, Plage du Bestouan. The tiny pebble beach is very beautiful with a great atmosphere. Again, you’ll find all the amenities you’ll need here including showers and toilets.

For the best beaches Cassis has to offer though, you’ll want to head into Calanques National Park which brings us to our next suggestion.

Cassis

Explore the Calanques National Park (Massif des Calanques)

For those wanting a taste of the French countryside, you can’t get much better than this incredible national park which is truly one of the most beautiful in the country. The Calanques are a series of inlets formed over millennia across the limestone landscape in the national park. Calanques National Park stretches from Cassis to the 9th arrondissement of Marseille.

They can be explored in a number of ways. The area is perfect for all types of visitors, from those looking for a bit of adventure and a challenging hike, to those just wanting to relax and unwind in nature. If you are planning on hiking during summer, try to avoid the peak heat of the day as there is little shade in some areas.

There are three main Calanques: Calanque d’En-vau, Calanque de Port Pin and Calanque de Port-Miou. In each inlet you’ll find multiple hidden beaches, perfect for a break in the shade and maybe even a whole beach to yourself.

Cassis

Calanque de Port-Miou

Summer warning

If you’re visiting in the summer there is a chance that the Calanques National Park will be closed due to wildfire risk. Always check the conditions on the day of your planned trip by checking the map here (red means forbidden even on foot) or downloading the app . That being said, to avoid the wild fire season, you’re best visiting the Calanques between March and May. The weather will be more pleasant and there will be far fewer crowds.

However if you’re planning it as part of a larger south of France trip you might still wish to visit during summer for the full experience (especially if you want to swim). In this case, you might just have to expect that you won’t be able to access the park. However you will still be able to take boat tours and admire the landscape that way! We’ve provided details on how to enjoy the Calanques from the water below.

You can walk into the Calanques straight from Cassis village. Otherwise there are a couple of car parks to get you a little closer. There’s a small car park at the Calanque de Port-Miou inlet and a larger car park close to the end of the headland, just put Brasserie du tennis club into maps.

Parts of the Calanques can be quite tough to hike so make sure you’re prepared with adequate water, food and proper walking shoes. Make sure you pick up your lunch in Cassis before heading out. There are plenty of bakeries in town that have really cheap and fresh baguettes that are perfect for a picnic lunch! You won’t find bins around so be sure to take all of your rubbish with you. Of course, don’t forget to bring your swimsuit, towel and sun protection.

1. Calanque de Port-Miou

For those short on time, the easiest Calanque to reach from Cassis is Calanque de Port-Miou. It’s only a 25 minute walk from Cassis to the beginning of Calanque de Port-Miou. From here you can hire kayaks or canoes from Destination Calanques Kayak Marseille Cassis from €40 for a half day trip (either 9am to 12pm or 1pm to 4pm). If you’re keen to keep walking, continue along the Sentier du Petit Prince which will take you to the end of the Calanque to where there is a nudist beach.

2. Calanque de Port Pin

Calanque de Port Pin is only 1.5km from Calanque de Port-Miou. You will find a small rocky beach here with very shallow calm water perfect for families. Those with children will probably want to end the hike here as the trail does get more difficult after this point.

3. Calanque d’en Vau

The hike to Calanque d’en Vau will take about 2.5 to 3.5 hours return. This is the furthest Calanque and arguably the prettiest. If you’re going this far you may as well give yourself a half a day to enjoy all three Calanques and stop at both Calanque de Port Pin and Calanque de Port-Miou on your way in and out. The bright azure waters and hidden beaches dotted along the way will take your breath away and certainly makes the time worth it. There are also plenty of interior walks within the national park as well. You could honestly spend weeks exploring this area!

Plage Bleue

Guided walks

All of the trails are well marked so you’ll be able to find your way around on your own. If you’d prefer a guided tour, this one only costs € 40 and you’ll be sure to be provided with plenty of information along the way. There are also e-bike tours on offer for those not interested in hiking, offering a way to still explore the Calanques on land. This e-bike tour leaves from Marseille and only costs € 47.

From the water

Another way to explore the Calanques is from the water, and there are both active and leisurely options. For those looking for a relaxing afternoon, consider taking a boat tour. Boat tours leave from Marseille, Cassis and La Ciotat giving you plenty of options. This tour from Marseille lasts 5 hours and costs € 79, or you can take a full day sailing experience from Marseille for € 130.

B e warned that you will need to book in advance for boat tours if you’re visiting in the summer! We left this decision to the last moment and missed out. For more active options you can take a paddle boarding tour like this one f or € 65 which leaves from Cassis, or this kayaking tour from Cassis that lasts between 3 and 6 hours and costs € 69.

Where to stay

When it comes to where to stay, you have two choices. You can either stay in nearby Marseille, or in Cassis itself. When we visited we stayed in Marseille and did a day trip to Cassis, which is totally doable. We chose this option as we had never visited Marseille and wanted to spend some time exploring the city as well. However, if we were to return we would definitely choose to stay in Cassis instead. And if you’re prepared to do the extra bit of travel with your luggage, we would suggest that you stay in Cassis too.

If you’re planning on two nights / three days we definitely think it’s worth the extra travel time. Cassis is so much more charming than Marseille, with a more local atmosphere, full of charming cafes and restaurants dotted around a small and quiet town sitting pretty on a picture-perfect harbour. Plus the natural beauty of Cassis far exceeds that of Marseille and the number of activities (particular outdoors) is phenomenal.

Where to stay in Cassis

You’re spoiled for choice when it comes to accommodation in Cassis, I would say more so than Marseille where you are restricted to hotels in the centre of town. Where you stay exactly will depend on how you’ve arrived (more on how to get to Cassis in the next section). If you have arrived by public transport, being central will be more important to you. There are buses of course (plenty actually) which will get you in and out of the town centre to nearby areas, but unless you’re staying for quite a few days we don’t think this is worth it given the extra travel. Also be aware that in summer you’ll be waiting at bus stops in the sun and buses can fill up before you board, meaning you could be left waiting for the next one.

We walked past Hotel de La Plage on a walk to Calanque de Port-Miou. This beautiful hotel is set back behind the beautiful Plage du Bestouan with panoramic views over the Mediterranean. It’s only a 12 minute walk to the port in Cassis so it’s a good compromise if you’re not wanting to stay right in the middle of the village, but close enough for it to still be convenient. It is very expensive in peak season though, at € 475 a night. For something more affordable, Hotel Le Golfe is right on the harbour with gorgeous views and a buffet breakfast for only € 130 per night in the summer (not bad for the south of France).

Cassis old port

Where to stay in Marseille

Try and find accommodation in the 1st, 2nd, 6th or 7th arrondissement close to the old port. It’s the area around the old port that is the safest and it’s also where the majority of tourist sites are. As you’re only going to be here for a couple of days it’s worth being central!

The 1st arrondissement near the old port is best for those looking to stay in the heart of the city and is probably the best location for those visiting Marseille for the first time. There’s so much happening in this area that you won’t have to venture too far out if you don’t want to and there’s no chance of you running out of things to do.

The 2nd arrondissement (but still close to the port) is the most convenient location for those most interested in museums and history and is closer to the train station than the 1st arrondissement. Marseille is the oldest city in France and one of the oldest neighbourhoods in the city is located in the 2nd arr., Le Panier.

For those looking for a bit of nightlife then the 6th arr. is perfect. The area of Notre Dame du Mont, and Jean Jaures Square in particular, is where you should head to experience the nightlife of Marseille.

The 7th arr. is best for those more interested in visiting the city beaches. Located on the coastline just south of Marseille, it’s still very close to the city but with sweeping views and in close proximity to Calanques National Park. If you’re going to choose to stay here you will probably want to hire a car.

How to get Cassis

You’ll likely be visiting Cassis as part of a larger trip to the south of France. To reach the cote d’azur you can either fly into Marseille or Nice . We have detailed guides to both cities which includes all the information you’ll need on how to get there. See our guide to Marseille here, and our guide to Nice here.

Public transport

From marseille.

You will need to take the train from Marseille St-Charles to Cassis which takes 24 minutes and will cost €6.50 for an adult each way. Once you arrive at Cassis station there are shuttle buses to the town centre which takes 15 minutes and will cost you €2 each way (you pay the driver in coins when you hop on). You can walk if you want to but it will take you 45 minutes and will be along narrow windy roads in part.

The San José was traveling to Europe with treasures to fund the war of the Spanish succession when it was sunk by the British off the coast of Colombia.

‘Holy grail of shipwrecks’: recovery of 18th-century Spanish ship could begin in April

The San José, sunk in 1708, has been at the center of a dispute over who has rights to the wreck, including $17bn in booty

S ince the Colombian navy discovered the final resting place of the Spanish galleon San José in 2015 , its location has remained a state secret, the wreck – and its precious cargo – left deep under the waters of the Caribbean.

Efforts to conserve the ship and recover its precious cargo have been caught up in a complicated string of international legal disputes , with Colombia, Spain, Bolivian Indigenous groups and a US salvage company laying claim to the wreck, and the gold, silver and emeralds onboard thought to be worth as much as $17bn.

When Colombia tried to auction off part of the bounty to fund the colossal costs of recovering the ship, Unesco and the country’s high courts intervened.

But eight years after the discovery, officials now say they are pushing politics to one side and could begin lifting artefacts from the “holy grail of shipwrecks” as soon as April.

“There has been this persistent view of the galleon as a treasure trove. We want to turn the page on that,” Alhena Caicedo, director of the Colombian Institute of Anthropology and History, said. “We aren’t thinking about treasure. We’re thinking about how to access the historical and archeological information at the site.”

Cannon from the San José.

The San José was returning to Europe with treasures to help fund the war of the Spanish succession when it was sunk by a British squadron in 1708, close to the Caribbean port city of Cartagena.

Historians say the wreck could help reveal much about the Spanish empire at the height of its power – and the shared, overlapping histories of Europe and Latin America.

Eventually, Caicedo’s team hopes to raise the wreck itself, and put it on display in a custom-built museum where visitors will be able to explore “all the secrets of the bottom of the ocean”, she said.

But as the expedition continues to explore the site, the scale and complexity of the challenge is coming into focus.

Few ships like the San José have ever been recovered – and none has ever been salvaged from warm tropical waters.

“This is a huge challenge and it is not a project that has a lot of precedents. In a way, we are pioneers,” said Caicedo.

The closest comparison would probably be to the Mary Rose, the flagship of Henry VIII’s fleet, which sank in 1545 while in battle with the French fleet off the coast of Portsmouth.

That 16th-century wreckage was explored by hundreds of divers – many of whom were volunteers – for a decade before being carefully lifted in 1981. The surviving section of the ship’s hull is now on display in a £35m ($45m) museum .

Contents of the San José shipwreck.

Colombia’s navy has been studying the Mary Rose and other such marine conservation projects to see how it could lift and conserve the 40-metre-long ship and its contents without it all crumbling to dust.

“The San José is a very, very special ship. It’s comparable to the Mary Rose in that it was in action at the peak of Spanish technology and shipbuilding,” said Ann Coats, associate professor in maritime heritage at the University of Portsmouth.

“There are so many questions the San José could help answer!”

The San José’s cargo includes articles of glass, porcelain and leather, and historians hope the haul could inform their understanding of global 18th-century trade networks, Spain’s complex colonial hierarchy and the lives of the 600 souls onboard.

after newsletter promotion

But while the Mary Rose lay in frigid coastal waters, the San José sank in deep, tropical waters which will probably have been cruel to the ship and could make the recovery one of the most costly and complex in history.

“The contents are really varied and we have no idea how the remains will react when they come into contact with oxygen. We don’t even know if it is possible to raise something out of the water,” said Caicedo.

The wreck’s precise location is a state secret to protect the site from looters, but Colombian authorities have revealed that it is 600 metres (2,000ft) below sea level – too far for divers to reach.

The country’s military is currently developing underwater robots that will first photograph, video and map the wreckage before carefully attempting any retrieval.

Exactly how much can be salvaged from the wreck will depend on myriad factors: currents, sea temperature, the type of silt the wreck is submerged in, how the ship’s 60 bronze cannons plunged to the seabed, and even which critters are now living there, says the head of the Mary Rose’s research program, Alex Hildred.

“It was also set on fire,” Hildred says. “Lifting the ship and creating a museum will be really difficult, really expensive and incredibly challenging … And then everyone wants a bit of it. It’s just a nightmare.”

The vessel’s international connections mean that historical research has until now been halted by international litigation over who is its rightful owner.

Although the wreck was found in Colombian waters, Spain has argued that the San José was part of the Spanish fleet and was returning from what was then part of the Spanish empire.

Meanwhile, Sea Search Armada (SSA), a US-based salvage company, has been locked in a legal battle with Colombia, arguing that it located the area in which the San José sank in 1981. SSA has argued that Colombia agreed to split any profits, but in 2011 a US court declared the galleon the property of the Colombian state.

Indigenous communities in Bolivia have also voiced a claim to any possible riches, arguing that their ancestors are likely to have mined the silver and gold used in many of the treasures .

The Colombian ministry of culture says the government has self-funded the first stage of exploration with $7.3m and it will not sell any of the precious artefacts as Unesco pleaded in 2018.

“Money has always driven the story of the San José. The British wanted to capture it to deny money to Spain, then the money onboard drove the archaeological search for the wreck,” said Coats. “Then disputes got in the way of studying the ship. It would be nice if for once money wasn’t driving things and a huge cultural collaboration could take place to study it properly.”

SpaceX’s Starship completes third test flight, its most successful yet

The spacecraft, powered by the world’s most powerful rocket, flew for nearly an hour in space, though it didn’t survive reentry into earth’s atmosphere.

SpaceX’s Starship spacecraft made it to space and traveled more than halfway around the world Thursday before coming to a fiery end over the Indian Ocean, in the most successful demonstration to date of the vehicle NASA has chosen to one day land astronauts on the moon.

While the spacecraft did not survive reentry into Earth’s atmosphere, it completed a number of key milestones that were hailed as major steps toward helping SpaceX perfect the art of flying the world’s largest and most powerful rocket.

In addition to a near-perfect launch, the craft flew for nearly an hour after lifting off from SpaceX’s private launch site in South Texas near the Gulf of Mexico at 9:25 a.m. Eastern time. All 33 of the booster’s engines ignited successfully, and after nearly three minutes, the Starship spacecraft separated and began a journey across the globe powered by its six engines.

The mission, SpaceX’s third test flight of the Starship system, was eagerly awaited by NASA, which is investing $4 billion in developing Starship. It intends to use the system to transport astronauts to the moon in the first two human landings since the Apollo era. SpaceX also intends to use the massive vehicle, which stands nearly 400 feet tall, to deploy the next generation of its Starlink internet satellites. Many in the science community are eager to use it to deploy large scientific instruments and telescopes into space.

“Congrats to @SpaceX on a successful test flight!” NASA Administrator Bill Nelson wrote in a post on X . “Starship has soared into the heavens. Together, we are making great strides through Artemis to return humanity to the Moon — then look onward to Mars.”

The vehicle, collectively called Starship, is composed of the Super Heavy booster and a spacecraft that sits on top. The company already has several other rockets under production and hopes to fly again soon, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has said.

On this flight, the rocket achieved a speed of more than 16,000 mph, which would have allowed the spacecraft to enter orbit around Earth. Instead, SpaceX commanded the spacecraft to reenter the atmosphere over the Indian Ocean. After slamming into the thickening atmosphere, it generated heat of about 2,600 degrees Fahrenheit and did not survive. The booster was also lost after it began to tumble as it fell back to Earth over the Gulf of Mexico.

Still, it was the most successful Starship flight by far.

“It’s incredible to see how much further we got this time around,” Dan Huot, a SpaceX spokesman, said during the company’s live broadcast.

“This is just a phenomenal test so far,” SpaceX engineer Siva Bharadvaj said. “Super Heavy is performing beautifully today.”

With each flight, SpaceX has gotten better at flying Starship, learning from each test mission and then using the data that it collects to continue to tweak the vehicle’s hardware, software and ground systems.

“Each of these flight tests continue to be just that: a test,” SpaceX said in a statement before Thursday’s flight. “They aren’t occurring in a lab or on a test stand but are putting flight hardware in a flight environment to maximize learning.”

During the first flight in April 2023, several of the main engines failed during liftoff and more failed as it ascended. The force of the rocket blew up its launchpad and sent debris flying into the Texas shoreline. That triggered a lawsuit from environmentalists, who are concerned about the massive rocket’s impact on the surrounding area.

For the second flight , SpaceX installed a water deluge system to its pad, which dampened the blast, and made upgrades to the rocket’s engines. The vehicle made it through stage separation, and the upper-stage engines fired as well. But as the booster started to ignite 13 of its engines to fly the rocket back to Earth, one engine failed, “quickly cascading to a rapid unscheduled disassembly” — the phrase SpaceX uses to describe the loss of a vehicle. The spacecraft was lost after a leak led to a fire, and its autonomous onboard flight termination system destroyed the vehicle.

After the flight, the Federal Aviation Administration oversaw SpaceX’s investigation and said in February that it had accepted the company’s report. As a result, the FAA required SpaceX to complete 17 corrective actions, which included hardware redesigns, updates to engine-control algorithms and the installation of fire protection measures.

SpaceX said that “upgrades derived from the flight test will debut on the next Starship and Super Heavy vehicles.”

On this mission, SpaceX also tested opening and closing the payload doors through which it would deploy satellites to orbit. And because SpaceX intends to eventually refuel its Starship spacecraft while in orbit, the company also attempted to transfer propellant on this flight from one tank to another.

It was not immediately clear if those tests were successful. “We do still need to do some data review on those,” Bharadvaj said. “So as we get that data back, we’ll be sure to update you on social [media] for how those tests went.”

As the Starship spacecraft began reentering the atmosphere, cameras onboard the spacecraft showed images of the intense heat building up around the vehicle, engulfing it in a fireball. SpaceX had installed terminals for its Starlink internet satellite system on the spacecraft, which allowed for the stunning video to broadcast on its live stream until the heat finally overtook the system.

As expected, communication with the spacecraft was lost as it plunged through the thickening atmosphere. After a few minutes, however, SpaceX said the spacecraft — known as Ship 28 — did not survive reentry.

“We are making the call now that we have lost Ship 28,” he said. The company had hoped to fly the ship all the way to the surface of Indian Ocean, where it was expected to hit hard and explode.

It was unclear where exactly the ship was when the mission ended, but Jonathan McDowell, an astrophysicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics who tracks spacecraft, said his analysis showed that it probably was lost about 620 miles southeast of Mauritius over the Indian Ocean.

Still, the flight will give SpaceX engineers lots of information to review that they will use in the next flight.

“The further we could fly, and the more data we could collect, was always the biggest win,” SpaceX engineer Kate Tice said.

What to know about SpaceX’s Starship

The latest: SpaceX’s third test flight of Starship was the most successful so far. It made it to space and traveled more than halfway around the world before coming to a fiery end over the Indian Ocean.

Starship: SpaceX’s massive rocket is the world’s most powerful rocket , a towering two-stage vehicle that NASA intends to use to land astronauts on the moon .

Previous flights: Starship’s first test was hailed as a success , though the landing pad was damaged after the ship exploded . The second test Starship successfully had liftoff, sparing the launch pad, but exploded amid separation from the boosters .

SpaceX launches Starship rocket into orbit on test flight but loses spacecraft during return to Earth

SpaceX’s next-generation mega rocket launched Thursday morning, thundering into orbit on a key test flight meant to demonstrate new technologies and techniques that will be crucial on future missions to the moon and beyond.

The flight, held on the 22nd anniversary of SpaceX's founding, was the rocket’s third and most ambitious such test, according to the company. The event was closely watched because the nearly 400-foot-tall booster, known as Starship , is expected to play an important part in NASA’s return-to-the-moon program .

The rocket lifted off at 9:25 a.m. ET from SpaceX’s Starbase test site in Boca Chica, Texas. On this outing, SpaceX achieved two major milestones over previous Starship tests: The spacecraft successfully reached orbit, then re-entered Earth’s atmosphere for the first time more than 40 minutes later.

“This is the furthest and fastest that Starship has ever flown,” SpaceX officials said during their live broadcast of the event.

However, data suggests the spacecraft was lost while it returned to Earth, before it reached the splashdown in the Indian Ocean that SpaceX had hoped for.

After Thursday's test flight concluded, the Federal Aviation Administration said it was investigating a “mishap” involving the Starship vehicle and the rocket’s first-stage booster, known as Super Heavy.

“No public injuries or public property damage have been reported,” the agency said in a statement . “The FAA is overseeing the SpaceX-led mishap investigation to ensure the company complies with its FAA-approved mishap investigation plan and other regulatory requirements.”

The FAA will need to conclude its investigation and SpaceX will be required to take any corrective actions identified by the agency before Starship can fly again.

Despite the undesired ending, SpaceX called it a “phenomenal day.”

The company adjusted the targeted liftoff time Thursday morning, but Starship’s launch started smoothly. Roughly three minutes into flight, the Super Heavy first-stage booster successfully separated from the upper-stage Starship spacecraft.

However, Super Heavy did not accomplish a final burn as it fell back to Earth, causing it to splash down “hard” in the Gulf of Mexico, SpaceX said during its webcast.

SpaceX had also hoped to demonstrate several other processes and capabilities during the flight, including opening and closing the vehicle’s payload door and transferring propellant between two of Starship’s tanks in orbit. The company said it will need to analyze post-flight data to determine if those objectives were completed.

SpaceX also intended to fire one of Starship’s Raptor engines while in space, but it ultimately opted to skip that portion.

Many of the techniques attempted during Starship's third flight would help SpaceX carry out future missions to deploy satellites, as well as set the stage for moon missions as part of NASA’s Artemis program.

The company also said many of the objectives would help develop Starship into a fully reusable system. That is SpaceX's eventual plan, but it was not the intention for this test flight.

Starship was selected by NASA to carry astronauts to the lunar surface in the upcoming Artemis III mission, which could launch in 2026.

Starship's debut flight  last April ended when the rocket exploded several minutes after liftoff. A  second Starship launch  in November achieved several milestones, including separation of the first-stage booster and upper-stage spacecraft, but the  company lost contact with the vehicle shortly after.
