Officially, the Deep Cove Yacht Club began its existence on July 31, l936 as the Deep Cove Sport Association and later became the Deep Cove Yacht & Sports Club, known fondly to most as the Deep Cove Yacht Club. Unofficially, the club’s formation was in reality the natural outcome of many of the Cove’s residents love for the water, water sports and boating. The municipality of North Vancouver had kindly allowed the club to rent a piece of land on the foreshore of Panorama Park.

Club Members cleared the land and erected a modest building and for the next forty nine years maintained and improved, all by volunteer labour, the clubhouse, grounds and floating wharves. During World War II, the clubhouse was requisitioned as an elementary school and it also served as a meeting place for the local Red Cross and Air Raid Precaution organizations.

During its early years, the clubhouse was the focal point for most of the Cove’s social and recreational activities and present Cultural Centre. By the early 1980’s, the original clubhouse was suffering from extreme old age and was replaced by the present building, with financing undertake solely by club members. In the past 20 years, the club has upgraded the wharves by installing 3 new concrete floats, electricity, water, extra lighting, security and new fingers. The club also acquired the Outstation at Iron bay in Indian Arm. DCYC members continue to pitch in and donate whatever talents they have to help keep the club functioning smoothly.

Unique Wedding Ideas: Boat Elopements and Boat Weddings British Columbia

Quality Photography Experience That Is Different.

Impressive Sunset Boat Wedding Photography

So you are interested to elope or having a larger wedding and using a boat in British Columbia, Canada? Congratulations! You’re in for a beautiful adventure .

But where do you start? What type of boat should I use? What are the best places to elope and get married on a boat?

This guide will answer all of these questions and more!

We are British Columbia photographers that spend A LOT of time on a boat

We are British Columbia photographers that spend a crazy amount of time around water. We love the water, the mountains, and the people that we meet.

We live on a lake and love sharing that type of adventure with people. We think using a boat for your wedding or photo shoot is such a unique wedding idea (we even used a boat for our own wedding as an excursion with our closest friends and family).

014 - unique places to elope

Get wedding photos like no one else by using a boat

There are so many different ways to take wedding photos and create beautiful memories for a lifetime. One of the most unique ways to capture memorable moments is by using a boat. Capturing the scene from the water can provide incredible angles that you don’t see every day. There are lots of options to do this when using a boat.

011 - british columbia adventure portraits

Option 1. A Smaller boat for an elopement or photoshoot

You can explore amazing locations by boat like islands, waterfalls, cliffs and old-growth forests. A smaller boat is the ideal choice for your wedding photos because it is easy to get on and off the boat.

If you want to invite a larger list of guests then you can get married at a location that accommodates your larger guest count, then head out to the boat for some beautiful wedding photos of just the two of you.

We live near Harrison Lake and are happy to recommend boat tours that can take you to some absolutely amazing locations around Harrison Lake. Another great option is to rent boats out of Granville Island ( https://boatrentalsvancouver.com/ ). They offer many sizes of boats.

Option 2. Hire a larger boat for your larger wedding

If you’re looking for a way to make your larger wedding day unique, look no further than hiring a yacht as the venue. The water and scenery will be spectacular, and you’ll give your guests an ever-changing unique experience.

We have photographed weddings at Magic Yacht Charters ( https://www.magicyachtcharters.com/ ). They offer 4 vessels that can cater for micro weddings or huge weddings of up to 385 guests!

5 Types of Boats for a Boat Elopement or Boat Wedding

Here are five types of boats for your next boating elopement or boat wedding:

Motor Boat: Motorboats are Faster but smaller in Size

Motorboats are an easy way to explore the waterways and enjoy a more intimate experience with nature. They are also faster than other types of boats and can be rented at many places on the water.

Yacht: Perfect for Luxury Weddings

With the ability to accommodate large amounts of guests, they provide an unforgettable experience for those in attendance. Yachts also come with a wide range of amenities and extras that make them ideal for large celebrations.

Sailboat: Quiet and relaxing

A sailboat wedding is the perfect elopement or wedding venue for the couple who wants to enjoy a quiet, tranquil ceremony on the water. Sailboats are a beautiful way to get married and with so many options out there, you’re sure to find one that meets your needs.

Houseboat: Houseboats Offer Space and Privacy

A houseboat is a boat that serves as a home. They are usually built on top of a barge, which provides stability. They provide space and privacy and amenities such as rooftop decks and washrooms for couples who want to elope or get married.

Kayak, Rowboat or Canoe: Great for elopement photo-ops

Kayaks allow you to paddle up close to shorelines, which is something that a boat would not be able to do as easily. If you’re looking for an easy and fun way to get some beautiful photos, then kayaking, canoeing or even a rowboat might be your best option!

What are the most scenic places to elope and get married using a boat in British Columbia?

There are many scenic places to elope and get married in British Columbia, but these are some of the most popular.

Harrison Lake

We’re locals and as such we are more than a little biased. But honestly, who could blame us? Harrison Lake is beautiful. We love how the sun is usually in a good spot for photos and that it’s often framed by snowcapped mountains and lots of trees. There is a lot of public land without much housing, so if you’re interested in exploring find new places consider checking out this part of British Columbia. Check out an amazing Boat-Access waterfall elopement .

The Howe Sound

The Howe Sound region is easy to access from Vancouver, has many beautiful destinations and secluded spots. There are lots of hidden gems along the Howe Sound.

The Indian Arm stretches from Deep Cove to Belcarra and has its own series of beautiful islands and waterfalls. These are all within close distance to Vancouver but still have seclusion that’s got its own amazing charm.

Pitt Lake is considered the second largest lake in the Metropolitan Vancouver area and is a beautiful body of water, surrounded by mountains and nature on its north side. Pitt Lake has Canoe rentals as well as a boat launch for motorboats. Don’t get caught by the currents on this lake as they can be extreme.

Sunshine Coast

The Sunshine Coast is a beautiful stretch of coast in British Columbia. There are plenty of coastal towns and villages along the coast, as well as great outdoor activities like paddling, boating. Check out this wedding where we used a rowboat to get amazing angles of the couple’s wedding ceremony.

Vancouver Island

British Columbia’s coastline has arguably the most breathtaking scenery of any in the world. It’s full of majestic fjords, alluring inlets, and hundreds of beaches. Boaters in this area get to explore the sheltered waterways around Vancouver Island or the popular marine parks found on nearby islands.

Interior British Columbia

Kelowna, Penticton and other towns in the interior of British Columbia are beautifully situated on lakes that would make beautiful wedding locations. We can’t wait to explore them!

Best time of day for a boat elopement or wedding

The best time of day for a boat elopement or wedding is usually in the morning. This depends on the location and it’s best to talk to an expert for that specific location. Usually, lakes and oceans are the calmest in the morning before thermal winds start. The lighting in the morning is also beautiful and the air feels clean and crisp.

027 - british columbia boat photos

The best season for boating

Summer boating is an obvious choice, but there are other factors to consider. Crowds will be a big issue at prime locations, and thermal winds can make it difficult to get out on the water depending on the location. Smoke can also be a factor during British Columbia weddings.

Good sailing programs and a clean marina, definitely check it out!

Amazing little site, watching the fog lift over the cove today...

Solid pace to sail. Has a great main building and although its small, its clean and has good spots to store your boat. No dry land storage and a lack of wind. The wind part isn’t their fault.

Recommended place for visit in north shore. Very beautiful place.

“Great place for Wedding Reception” Review of Deep Cove Chalet

Smoked salmon

My friend's had her Wedding reception at the Deep Cove Chalet, and what a great choice. The place is very picturesque set in beautiful gardens over looking Brentwood Bay. There was only around 80 people at the reception, it was the perfect size. We were met with a glass of champagne which started the reception off in the right way. The meals were superb, I had the lamb with very nice dessert and coffee. The staff were great and very helpful. Lots of parking and what a nice location.

We discovered the Deep Cove while wandering around North Saanich. After stopping we told advised that reservations are required for both lunch and dinner. We decided to try the restaurant the following Wednesday for lunch since the meals are not inexpensive. We were quickly seated and had a great view of the cove. Service was attentive but not intrusive. The meal itself was very good, I started with a terrine of fois gras, melt in your mouth smooth, followed by a Salade Niçoise and my wife had a warm seafood salad. Dessert was an flourless lemon souffle which was outstanding. The restaurant is traditional French style so don't expect anything different. I read the reviews later and found the people either hated it or loved it and I suspect that some fault lies with customers not realizing the type of restaurant it is and the balance with the chef not having any patience for customers that don't appreciate his cooking.

We wanted to show our friends from Ontario what West Cost dining is all about. They are seafood lovers (as are we) so I looked around and read various reviews. Unfortunately we chose the Deep Cove Chalet. Reservations were made well in advance for an expected relaxing and pampered evening. The setting and grounds/gardens of the restaurant are beautiful. Right on the ocean, and very picturesque. The manicured lawns, the flowering gardens, the rock gardens with a multitude of succulents growing could not be any more perfect. Kudos to whomever the gardener(s) are. The restaurant seating is arranged to take full advantage of the excellent view, with almost all tables enjoying the vista through large picture windows. Our party was seated promptly right in front of one of those large windows...great! Our guest were suitably impressed with the both the view and the ambiance. Then started, what would be, a very disappointing and frustrating evening. The server, although pleasant enough, had to be asked to bring glasses of water. We perused the wine menu and settled on two glasses - one red and one white. The other two people opted for a draft beer and a glass of Club Soda, respectively. When the server returned with the beverages, he served our guest first and then my wife and lastly, myself. All well and good. But - while pouring my wife's glass of red wine, from a standard 750 ml bottle, he accidentally spilled a portion onto the white table cloth and also onto my bread plate and all over the butter knife that was sitting on the plate. No apology. Not even an "excuse me." The wine was left to soak into the table cloth and my bread plate and butter knife were left there for the remainder of the evening. Should I have asked for another knife and plate? Perhaps, but in a restaurant of this caliber (and at the prices being charged) it should not be necessary to request a clean plate or a clean utensil. The four of us looked at one another and finally decided to over look the faux pas. Now to ordering dinner. One of our party has health issues and consequently has a very small appetite. It was decided that she would get a salad and just share a very small portion of her husband's dinner. They were informed - pointedly - that the "house" will not split or portion any dinners whatsoever. No "ifs", "ands", or "buts." "It is the house policy." The person was forced to either order a full meal, or not eat. Again, I was convinced to not say anything. The basket of bread came and was deposited upon the table. It was interesting to sop up the wine spill with my piece of bread. Apropos for an Italian cafe perhaps, but definitely NOT at this place. Appetizers (for those that had ordered them) came. Very tasty. So far, so good. The mains came. Fillet of halibut with 'seasonal vegetables'. Smallish portion of fish resting upon some sauerkraut, looking decidedly lonely on the plate. Not quite surrounded by one very small baby carrot, two small slices of beet, one piece of broccoli, and a small piece of cauliflower. While being quite tasty, the portion sizes (when compared to the pricing) were miserly and that is being generous. Even the person with the tiny appetite ate all her main course. Indicative of the portion size? Very much so. OK, since none of us were approaching anything like being full, we ordered three desserts. Two plates of 'decadent chocolate' brownies, and some vanilla ice cream with warm chocolate truffle sauce for me. After waiting the appropriate amount of time...here it comes! Good. The brownies looked very good. My vanilla ice cream looked...well, vanilla-ish. The truffle sauce was served on-the-side in a very warm metal gravy boat. The server poured half of my sauce over my dessert and promptly drizzled and dripped onto the once white table cloth. NO apology, No 'excuse me", NO reaction of any sort. Being somewhat used to this by now, we all kept quiet and proceeded to eat our desserts. After finishing, we moved our plates to one end of the table, out of our way. Remember that sauerkraut that the halibut fillet rested on? Well, there was a good sized dollop of the stuff adhering to the bottom of my dessert plate. This became immediately evident when Ii moved my plate. Not a pleasant nor appetizing thing to discover. What is/was going on in the kitchen!?! Who is supposed to be washing dishes?!? We paid our bill and left. None of us are willing to return. There will be some "bad press" for the Deep Cove Chalet when our guest return home, not to mention their further adventures with family in different cities on their vacation. I seriously doubt whether they will have anything favorable to say about that restaurant. Too bad - it could have been such an enjoyable experience for all. Instead, all four of us will be re-telling our tale to friends and family alike. I do NOT recommend the Deep Cove Chalet at all. Stay away in droves!

This establishment has been around for years yet this my first visit. My loss. Extensive menu and solid wine list. The views from both the windows and the extensive grounds are beautiful. The restaurant sits close to an arm of the Salish Sea and their grounds in summer abound with spectacular formal and wild flowers. Really good meal. Service and greeting were a bit too old school stuffy for my liking but that would be my only complaint. Otherwise a place to recommend. Good food from fresh local ingredients in beautiful surroundings. Not cheap but then the good things never are usually..........

It was my mother's birthday and we took my parents here for lunch to celebrate. The restaurant was simply fabulous and the service excellent! We all thought the meal was delicious and the view was to die for. We will definitely return for aother special meal.
