OLIVIA O Yacht – Extravagant $200 Million Superyacht

OLIVIA O yacht is the 88th largest yacht in the world with a total length of 88 meters (288 ft). She is an explorer yacht built by the Ulstein shipyard in Norway in 2020.

OLIVIA O yacht interior

No official photos of the interior of OLIVIA O have been released. The design project was conducted by Droulers Architecture , a studio from Milan that is owned by the two sisters Nathalie and Virginie.

They have worked on several superyachts and she was one of their largest. The vessel includes seven guest cabins that can host up to 14 guests.

A further 30 crew members find space in 15 cabins below the deck. The yacht has a large movie theatre, a gym as well as a beauty salon.

Specifications

The super yacht OLIVIA O is 88 meters (288 ft) long with a beam of 16.3 meters (53.6 ft) and a 5.1-meter (16.9 ft) draft.

Due to her high draft, she is not suitable for shallow waters but rather designed for exploration and more remote journeys. Her twin electric Rolls Royce engines allow her to cruise at a speed of 14 knots although her top speeds of 15 knots aren’t much higher.

With a volume of 4.989 tons, she is very heavy, especially when considering her length.

Ulstein is typically known for constructing vessels meant for the oil industry and OLIVIA O was the first superyacht they built.

To this day she remains the largest yacht constructed at their shipyard in Norway.

olivia o front

When looking at OLIVIA O her unusual exterior design is immediately noticeable. She features a so-called inverted bow (or x-bow) which her builders at Ulstein are known for.

This means that the furthest tip of the bow is not located at the top but rather on the bottom of the water line. Her bow is just one more feature that clearly identifies OLIVIA O as an explorer ship and much more than just a superyacht.

She carries several tenders and features a large helipad and of course a 10-meter swimming pool.

Her remarkable bridge offers almost 360° views and is reminiscent of an exploration vessel.

The exterior design of OLIVIA O was conducted by Espen Oeino who has worked on many other prominent yacht projects in the past.

The owner Offer paid a reported price of US $200 million. She generates US $15 to 20 million in annual running costs.

Motor Yacht

MY OLIVIA was originally built in Finland as an ice classed Hydrographical Survey Vessel for the Russian Navy in 1972.

In 2011 she went through an exhaustive refurbishment transforming her into a modern day 70m luxury motor yacht. Italian craftsmen led by a top Italian designer completely re-designed the interior of the yacht to feature 5 large well-appointed suites, a cinema room, a private office, and a separate dining room. Thanks to her 13m beam, the MY Olivia benefits from ample entertaining space.

The bridge features the latest in communication and navigational equipment. In addition, the vessel is fitted with Rolls-Royce stabilization systems generally found on superyachts and cruise ships.

The MY Olivia boasts a 12 person Jacuzzi and all the toys common on superyachts such as sailing boats, and high speed jet skis.

My Olivia is a great example of how to transform a classic ocean-going ship into a luxurious state-of-the-art expedition yacht.

She is capable of achieving a max speed of 15 knots using a powerful Deutz AG RBV 6M 358 Single Screw Diesel Engine with a long range distance of 13,500nm.

MY OLIVIA offers accommodation for up to 10 guests and is capable of carrying up to 26 crew onboard to ensure an attentive but relaxed luxury yacht experience.

A 225-foot Russian navy ship was converted into a luxury superyacht named Olivia that's now on sale for nearly $27 million with Burgess Yachts .

The navy ship was first assembled in 1972 by Finnish maker Laivateollisuus to serve as a hydrographic surveying vessel for the Russian Navy. However, the ship found new life in 2011 when it was transformed into its new state as a luxury yacht with amenities like a 12-person jacuzzi and sun pads for comfortable lounging under the sun.

Olivia's transformation was completed by Rouvia Road Yacht Design and Construction and Droulers Architecture, focusing on both the interior and exterior of the ice-class navy ship.

The plush amenities and design aboard Olivia disguise, but pay homage, to the yacht's previous life. Take a look:

Olivia is powered by a 2,000 horsepower engine.

From aft decks dedicated to the ultimate helipad to silent hybrid cruisers, and even optical illusion design, it’s a rubbernecker’s paradise of top notch amenities and visionary thinking all rolled up into one dynamic yacht package. Whether you’re a salty sailor at heart or keen on speed machines, here we identify eight innovative vessels that will make you want to hop aboard without a second thought.

Feadship 312-foot ‘Bliss’

motor yacht olivia owner

Launched in May 2021, Bliss has the Dutch shipyard’s all-new hybrid propulsion system. Designed and engineered in partnership with De Voogt Naval Architects, the diesel-electric hybrid system is paired with Polar Code compliance, meaning guests can cruise the more sensitive Polar regions with greater efficiency and as light a footprint as possible. Welcoming nine guests in an interior designed by Remi Tessier, the 312-foot world traveler packs true go-anywhere capabilities, along with a gym, wellness space, a pool and a convertible helideck.

Royal Huisman’s 184-Foot Sailing Yacht ‘Aquarius’

Robb Report's Best Sailing Yacht 2019, the Royal Huisman Aquarius

When design simplicity meets cutting-edge technology, the result is 184-foot ketch Aquarius . Built for an owner who likes to race and explore in equal measure, the Royal Huisman sailing yacht shows how performance and classic design do not have to be mutually exclusive. Fast yet easy to sail, Aquarius has a ketch rig developed in collaboration by the yard, its sister company Rondal, and Dykstra Naval Architects. She pairs 9,843-square-feet of sails with the latest in navigational aids to be a world explorer. Classic teak decking and good seakeeping qualities make her a true sailor’s yacht.

Heesen 262-foot ‘Galactica’

motor yacht olivia owner

The 262-foot Galactica, built by Dutch shipyard Heesen in 2022, rewrites the rules of engineering. The owner’s brief requested fast and big, which led to an all-aluminum build to keep weight down and achieve speeds close to 30 knots, and a newly patented “backbone” for strength and rigidity. Developed in partnership with Dutch hydrodynamicists Van Oossanen, Galactica ’s fast displacement platform is created using two long, flat metal plates that are joined together by a vertical plate in the middle. This prevents the hull from flexing in water. Four MTU engines deliver 19,000-hp, and the addition of a fully-certified helipad means no place is off limits.

Ulstein Verft’s 290-Foot Motor Yacht ‘Olivia O’

Olivia O

Olivia O is a yacht that means business. Robust in every way, she is owned by a commercial shipping magnate with a love for industrial boats. Built by Norwegian shipyard Ulstein Verft Olivia O ’s rustic appeal is exemplified by the use of metal in the Espen Øino-designed interior, from windows with steel borders to corridors with painted metal ceilings. On water, she is defined by Ulstein’s trademarked X-Bow, which was originally designed for use on offshore vessels. Olivia O is the first yacht to ever feature it. Launched in 2020, she bridges the gap between luxury superyacht and authentic rugged explorer.

Oceanco’s 350-Foot Sailing Yacht ‘Black Pearl’

motor yacht olivia owner

Scooping the top spot for largest DynaRig sailing yacht in the world, Black Pearl is designed by Nuvolari Lenard (assisted by Villate Design). A tri-deck sailing yacht, she boasts three revolutionary 70m DynaRig carbon masts and a sailing system designed by Dykstra Naval Architects. What’s more impressive is that all 2,900sqm of her black, highly distinctive sails can be set in a rapid seven minutes, and all at the push of a button. Her hybrid propulsion system, and other environmental onboard systems, such as waste heat recovery, propel her among a new generation of environmentally sustainable, and highly efficient vessels.

Benetti 351-foot ‘Lana’

motor yacht olivia owner

One of the most exciting additions to the gigayacht club, Lana was built to discover the four corners of the globe. One of the largest yachts delivered by the Italian builder, Lana is powered by an unusual Rolls-Royce hybrid-electric propulsion, delivering fuel efficiency and long-range cruising. Delivered in 2020, she boasts a large pool on the sun deck that comes with its own heating system, meaning guests can enjoy a splash wherever she cruises. A waterside beach club with folding terraces creates a floating apartment at sea, equipped with a Hammam, massage room, and a dedicated professional therapist makes up one of the 33 full-time crew.

Bilgin 262-foot ‘Tatiana’

motor yacht olivia owner

Launched in 2020, Tatiana the new flagship yacht from Bilgin Yachts heralded the arrival of cutting-edge, metal-hulled Turkish-built superyachts. With an internal volume of 1,689 gross tons—more than twice that of Bilgin’s previous flagship— Tatiana is defined by long overhangs and a sweeping sheer line penned by Unique Yacht Design. But it’s the 1,200-square-foot lower deck beach club with its two fold-down sea terraces that steal the limelight. The centerpiece is a 30-foot long, freshwater swimming pool. A second glass-bottomed pool on the main deck bathes the beach club below in dappled sunlight. When the shell doors are closed, guests can pamper themselves in the spa that enjoys a hammam, massage room and wet bar with a backlit floor.

Oceanco’s 360-Foot ‘Kaos’ (ex-‘Jubilee’)

JUBILEE 00001374

The mighty motor yacht Kaos , formerly known as Jubilee , was built by Dutch shipyard Oceanco. For her Moscow-born exterior designer Igor Lobanov, she represents the need to always have faith in your own vision. Topping both length and volume records in the Netherlands at the time of her launch, Kaos’s layered double decks—the very thing that originally put so many people off the concept—are, for Lobanov, the key to the design’s success. “When you’re travelling on a small tender it gives the scale of a bigger yacht, but as you get closer to the yacht you realize her actual size. That’s what we wanted to achieve. We wanted it to be a design trick.” The illusion has been created with smoked glass panels between the decks that run the length of the superstructure and areas of teak decking inaccessible to guests, but which from a distance look like genuine deck spaces. Perfection.

Nobiskrug’s 262-Foot ‘Artefact’

motor yacht olivia owner

Renowned for a truly striking exterior before she had even hit water, Artefact is the latest launch from German shipyard Nobiskrug. Designed by Gregory C Marshall, she boasts an extensive use of both structural and decorative glass, and includes a number of new technological and engineering features to minimise its environmental impact. These include a large battery storage system which allows the boat to operate without internal combustion engines for a limited time. The biggest-volume 262-foot superyacht in the world, she is also among the first superyachts to meet IMO Tier III emissions regulations and features an innovative diesel-electric propulsion system developed with electric motor manufacturer ABB.

Sanlorenzo 112-foot SX112

motor yacht olivia owner

As the flagship of Sanlorenzo’s SX crossover line, the premise of the 111.5-foot SX112 is to introduce a new way of living at sea. Described by the Italian builder as a “floating building,” the innovative design enhances guests’ onboard connectivity to the outdoors. It’s achieved by reducing barriers to the outside and closer indoor-outdoor connection. Greater emphasis has been placed on the stern, which has a spacious internal beach area with easy access to the water and beyond, and elsewhere, retractable terraces maximize the outside connection. Exterior designed by Zucccon International, the SX112 gifts superyacht living space typically found on a much larger yacht aboard a compact platform.

Sunreef 78.7-foot 80 Eco

motor yacht olivia owner

Is there anything more responsible than an electric sailing yacht that creates renewable energy? We don’t think so. The Sunreef 80 Eco is a sustainable transatlantic catamaran that combines electric propulsion with superyacht living and reliable sailing performance. Designed for long offshore navigation, it even generates its own electricity while under sail via a hydro generation system. A total of 1,765-square-feet of ultra-lightweight composite-integrated solar panels are spread across the mast, boom, superstructure, Bimini and hull sides generating up to 32kWp. Inside, the 78.7-foot multihull enjoys living quarters and accommodation for up to 10 guests, thanks in part to a 38-foot beam. It’s like a luxury pied-à-terre on water.

McConaghy Boats’ 140-Foot Trimaran ‘Adastra’

motor yacht olivia owner

Costing over $20 million to build when launched in 2012, the owner of this custom-built transatlantic trimaran—shipping magnate Antony Marden—has cruised the seven seas for seven years turning heads everywhere he goes. Adastra ’s space age design comes from the boards of British studio Shuttleworth Design and was built in China by McConaghy Boats. Her speedy and light-weight hull is made from a super-strong e-glass/Kevlar foam sandwich, while her superstructure is made up of carbon fiber with a lightweight Nomex honeycomb core. Currently for sale, she provides the rare opportunity to own a yacht with “amazing seaworthiness” and looks like nothing else out there right now.

From spy ship to superyacht: Inside the transformation of the 68m Olivia

From Soviet spy ship to a luxury explorer yacht, 68.8 metre superyacht Olivia has an intriguing story to tell. Cecile Gauert uncovers her colourful history...

Not too many yachts out there have a monkey island. But then again, 68.8-metre Olivia is no average yacht. She was born a Soviet spy ship during the Cold War era and then maintained her low profile as a privately owned explorer yacht. In spite of that, she’s long had a fan club, starting with her current owner and professional crew, who have travelled all over the world on board – on average 10,000 nautical miles a year for the past decade.

The yacht’s owner was fascinated by her even before he bought her and knows much about her history from the time she emerged from a Finnish yard in 1972. “Her purpose was to spy on all the NATO movements of ships and submarines into the North Sea. This was the Cold War era, when both parties were doing nothing else but engaging in watching each other,” he says. “She had been equipped with Finnish and German machinery and was designed to go on long missions in the North Sea. The purpose of her design was to serve the Russian navy as a submarine-spotter ship.”

The boat had the aforementioned “monkey island” – a deck located directly over the bridge, its lofty position ideal for surveying the horizon – as well as an observation tower rising about eight metres into the air, where “the men could stand in the midst of winter, moving 15 degrees side to side and back and forward at the tallest point of the ship, and a cofferdam, which housed sonars”.

The builder was the now defunct Finnish shipyard Oy Laivateollisuus , whose main customer was the Soviet Union. The mandate was clear: this ship, which was officially designated as a hydrographic survey vessel and named Valerian Albanov after a famous Russian polar researcher and navigator, had to be able to go out and stay out, no matter what the conditions. And so she did, keeping watch every hour of every day, until the end of the Cold War. With the advent of perestroika and the tough economic times that came with the dissolution of the Soviet Union, she was one of many ships offered for sale. And she was a steal.

In 1991, an entrepreneur thought she’d make the perfect commercial expedition boat for the Galápagos because, says the owner, “she was as sturdy as they come”. For whatever reason, he could not make a go of it. Rebranding her ( Rem Fantasy , Galápagos and Red Dragon ) did not help and the business venture ended. By then she was a little worse for wear but still a mighty Ice-Class ship. Another chapter of her life started around 2005 at the hands of a man Olivia ’s owner describes as an Italian with serious hobbies as an architect, pilot and boat captain, who found her in Hamburg, Germany.

“He decided to make her his retirement home. He always wanted to be on the most noteworthy converted ships he could find. He is the one who took her from Hamburg to the Philippines,” the owner says. “He worked on her for four solid years.”

Why the Philippines? It was the most cost- effective way to carry out a major conversion. Rouvia Road Yacht Design & Construction , a design, charter and refit business located near the Mariveles ferry terminal in the Bay of Mariveles in Bataan, was tasked with restyling the exterior and putting a new interior in the boat, then known as Delta Bravo One .

The cost of such a refit was much lower in the Philippines than it would have been in Europe, and the owner did not skimp on anything. This was to be a floating home and he wanted the best of everything. The entire interior, including the crew area, was clad in 38-millimetre-thick solid rosewood, which is now impossible to find. Rosewood was shaped to form the outer frames of portholes in all the cabins. The decks were laid with wide planks of teak and more teak garnished the handrails, in places wider than the hand.

Whatever steel had been damaged was replaced, while the bridge was redone and updated to the latest technology available at the time. Everything was changed – from the pumps, generators (three 300kW Cummins) and air conditioning systems to the cranes. To improve upon the comfort of the sea-kindly hull, Rolls-Royce fin stabilisers were added. The intention was to replace the original 1971 2,000hp Deutz engine with a new one, but this played havoc with the timeline. So instead, he had the vessel’s original slow-churning engine renewed. According to Olivia ’s captain of 10 years, it works like a Swiss watch. Well maintained, he says, “engines are forever”.

The forward part of the ship was organised with a cargo hold large enough for motorbikes, where he also put an incinerator and fuel station. The ship’s stores can hold enough food for several months. The water-maker produces 24,000 litres of fresh water daily. “He wanted this to be able to go around the world and be totally self-sustainable,” Olivia ’s owner says. And then some. He put in a top-of-the-range galley, sourced from an Italian supplier. For the tenders he chose a 9.5-metre Hurricane Zodiac, a RIB with a range of 200 kilometres, and a Royal limo that seats 12 people in a cabin with a hydraulically operated roof for easier boarding. He also filled her with diving equipment. But just as he was knee-deep in the project, he became ill.

“He completed the infrastructure, layout and technical side of her, and he passed [away],” Olivia ’s owner says. “For years I had been looking for a ship to convert into a yacht,” he says. She had been the dream of one man. “The family did not know what to do with her, so I bought her.”

The next phase of the ship’s transformation into a world-girding yacht happened in Malta. Here, the current owner had the interior modified and finished to fit his family’s lifestyle and brought the yacht, now named Olivia , up to a whole new level. The yacht’s captain was on site to keep a watchful eye on the one-year refit, which included the major undertaking of giving her a yacht finish. The fairing and painting alone took months.

The owner has worked with Italian firm Droulers Architecture over the years. He asked them to create the interior and work out the deck layouts to include an office and cinema room, in addition to the saloon, dining room and the main deck guest cabins. “I told them not to change the character of the ship, to keep it Zen, and make me a comfortable boat with a very good working and living environment,” he says.

The rosewood contributes to a warm atmosphere in a sparingly decorated interior that prioritises comfort and relaxation. The cabins – four plus the owner’s suite – have the feel and smell of a mountain retreat. “The colour of the wood over the years ages according to the amount of light,” the owner says. “We left the wood in its original form. It is the second-hardest wood after teak, and it has a natural wood smell.”

Most of the furnishings were custom made, including a dining table with inlays of minerals and chairs based on an original 1960s Italian design. The decks were reconfigured for comfortable lounging and sunbathing, with the addition of a large spa pool and canopies for shade. A deck below a symmetrical seating arrangement for 10 was created on either side of the funnel, which proves helpful. “Whenever the wind and the sun hit you, you can go to the other side,” the owner says. The emphasis was on modern, practical comfort but the result is also very stylish. “Droulers brought Italian flair and we brought practical flair,” the owner says.

Over the years, more improvements were made – including the addition of an articulated swim platform that swings from the retractable gangway, a practical workaround for the canoe stern – and the yacht has been lovingly maintained by her professional crew.

The owners spend at least three months of the year on board and they have travelled all over the world with Olivia , whose original incarnation is occasionally recognised under all that Awlgrip. In the Caribbean some years ago, the owner hailed two men in an old Boston Whaler that kept circling them. “Can I help you?” he asked.

“Is this Valerian Albanov ?” they shouted back. “We were spotters on an American Navy ship in the North Sea and we were looking for her all over the place. We can identify her anywhere. We could wake up in the middle of the night and recognise her by her silhouette.”

Later on, somewhere else in the Caribbean, a sailing boat strained to keep alongside her. This time, the occupants of the boat spoke Russian. The owner asked his Bulgarian captain to translate. “Can I help you?” he asked. “Is this Valerian Albanov ? We used to sail her in the ’80s,” the reply came back. And then one time in Europe, they bumped into the German man who delivered Delta Bravo One from Hamburg to the Philippines. He told the owner he’d never been on a better sea boat.

Olivia has a relatively low gross tonnage (1,259GT) owing to her open decks. But when asked where he likes to be, the owner responds without hesitation that the bridge is his favourite spot. It is, the captain says, one of the biggest he’s seen. The owner also likes staying on the aft deck. Olivia ’s pitch propeller is very deep in the water (to avoid hitting ice blocks) and as a result, she leaves no wake, he says.

The owner also has genuine appreciation for the machinery of his yacht and her abilities. “The rougher it got, the more fun I had,” he says. “With these huge stabilisers, she does not roll, she just pitches, but she is very gentle. You can go up three, four metres and then she goes ‘whoosh’ and there is a huge spray coming up the top of the mast with no consequences except a gush of water,” he says. “No custom-design yacht could offer me this safety.”

With the ability to hold 282,500 litres of fuel and a consumption of around 4,850 litres per 24 hours, says her captain, the range is amazing – up to 15,000 nautical miles – and her Ice Class means no area of the world is off-limits to this self-sufficient yacht.

It may be quicker to list the areas Olivia did not visit in the past 10 years than to list all the ones she did: “We have not been to Australia and New Zealand with her,” the owner says. She’s been all over the Med, to South East Asia – Singapore, Myanmar and Vietnam, to the Caribbean many times and to Cuba, circumnavigating the island, and through the Panama Canal, both ways, with trips to Colombia and the San Blas Islands. The longest trip she took was from Italy to the Far East, roughly 25 days of transit in 2017. “We took her through the Suez Canal, Gulf of Aden and to Thailand,” the captain says.

Olivia kept her adventures quiet for years, but the owner has decided to part with her and so her story needs telling. The ice queen with a warm heart is now looking for a new owner to care for her and add new chapters to her long story.

This feature is taken from the September 2020 issue of BOAT International. Olivia sold in February 2021. Get this magazine sent straight to your door, or subscribe and never miss an issue.
