Sailing Time? Richard Mille’s New Regatta Will Showcase Vintage Yachts Racing Across the English Channel

The watchmaker has sponsored Les Voiles de St. Barth’s and the Fife Regatta , but this new series is a much more ambitious venture. The two-week race will feature owners of historical yachts from Great Britain and France, racing from Falmouth to Le Havre, with stopovers in Dartmouth and Cowes—two sailing landmarks—that will pit the iconic vessels against each other in both inshore and offshore racing. More than 200 sailors are expected to participate in the racing.
As a precursor, Richard Mille established Team Fife, a group of yachts that include classics like Mariquita, Moonbeam IV and Moonbeam . William Fife, a third-generation member of a famous Scots family of naval architects, designed more than 600 yachts in his long career, including two America’s Cup contenders. Last year, 22 of his restored vessels raced in the Fife Regatta. Many will be in this year’s Richard Mille Cup.
William Collier, who has organized the Fife Regatta since 1989, will be working with the watchmaker on this new event. “The Richard Mille Cup strives to recapture the spirit of the pre-war British racing circuit,” says Collier, who has restored multiple historical yachts back to vintage racing condition.
Fifteen yachts dating from the end of the 19th century to the late 1930s will compete in the Schooner and Cutter categories. The race will include stops at the Royal Cornwall and Royal Dart Yacht Clubs as well as the Royal Yacht Squadron before racing across the Channel towards the final line at the Société des Régates du Havre.
A Richard Mille family member, Pierre Casiraghi, has been with the brand since 2018 as a sailor. He will be joining the race on Tuiga , the Yacht Club de Monaco’s flagship vessel.
As one would expect with a classic race, the trophy had to match the pomp and circumstance of the event, but without too much pomp and circumstance. The three-foot-plus-high trophy was designed by Garrard, jewelers to the British Royal Family for the last 300 years, and designers of the first America’s Cup trophy 170 years ago.
The Richard Mille Cup will take place from June 10 to June 25.

Richard Mille Cup: New classics series to take place in 2023
- Toby Heppell
- February 22, 2023
A series of offshore and inshore racing will form the new Richard Mille Cup, which will take place for the first time in summer 2023
This summer a new event is due to take place in the form of the Richard Mille Cup, a series of inshore and offshore races organised with the Royal Yacht Squadron, the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club, Royal Dart Yacht Club and the Société des Régattes du Havre.
The racing is principally designed to be for classic yachts and entry is invite only – though expressions of interest are currently being taken . Entry will be open to invited owners and charterers of yachts built before 1939 or faithful replicas of such yachts. The minimum size of any yacht eligible to enter will be 10M length at the waterline.
Racing will take place under the CIM handicap system. All yachts entering will have to provide a valid CIM certificate and all races, be they inshore or offshore, will be scored with equal weighting.
Richard Mille Cup events
The first event in the new series will take place in Falmouth and registration and the opening reception will be held at the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club on Saturday 10 June 2023 followed by three days of inshore racing in Falmouth Bay.
This will be followed by the series’ first Offshore Race from Falmouth to Dartmouth with the fleet leaving Falmouth on Wednesday 14 June. This will be followed by a dinner in Dartmouth on the evening of Thursday 15 June.
After this 65nm offshore race the fleet will take on another offshore event racing the 90nm from Dartmouth to Cowes. This event will, once again, immediately follow the previous racing, with a start date of 16 June.
After this initial round of inshore and offshore racing the series will take a very short break until 19 June when a welcome reception will be held at the Royal Yacht Squadron followed by three days of inshore racing on the Solent. Weather and tides permitting, this may include a ‘Round the Island Race’.
The final event in the series will be the biggest offshore leg, with the fleet set to race 100nm from Cowes to Le Havre after which a grand prize giving celebration will be held on Sunday 25 June at Société des Régattes du Havre.
For the winner of the event a new trophy has been commissioned from famed trophy maker Garrard, the manufacturer of the America’s Cup among many other famed sporting trophies.
The Richard Mille Cup will stand 1m tall and the design takes inspiration from the classic yachts that will compete for the trophy.
The Richard Mille Cup is a perpetual trophy and the winner will be presented with a 40cm high replica also made by Garrard.
You can apply to register your interest at the Richard Mille Cup website .

Maine to Host New Classic Yachts Challenge Series
Tuesday, june 8th 2021.
Classic yacht racing has always been strong in Maine due to the state’s many world-class boatbuilders, yacht designers and the state’s gorgeous sailing waters. And this summer the competition will be fierce, as racing ramps up after last summer’s truncated season.
Also, in addition to a new race in Boothbay, there will be a new trophy for boats that compete in at least three classic yacht regattas. The Newport, RI-based Classic Yacht Owners Association has established Maine as its own District in a newly formed competition called the Classic Yachts Challenge Series. To win the Maine District Series, competitors need to race in three races in Maine in two separate Maine events. A goal of the District Championship Series is to give boats that can’t travel between districts the chance to be recognized. To qualify for the Overall Series Championship, an additional two races must be completed with one being in either the Massachusetts or NY/RI/CT districts. The Overall Championship series unites 13 prestigious classic yacht regattas from Long Island Sound to Eggemoggin Reach, Maine.
Maine’s classic racing season will start with the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club Regatta and Shipyard Cup Classics Challenge, July 24 and 25; followed by the Camden Classics Cup, July 29-31; the Castine Classic Yacht Race, August 5; and the Camden to Brooklin Feeder race on August 6. The Eggemoggin Reach Regatta, now in its 36 th year and the regatta that started it all in Maine wraps up the Maine series on August 7. These are destination regattas. Every town puts out the welcome mat for these sailors and their crews.
The Maine District Champion and Overall Champion will be announced in the fall in Newport, RI at the CYOA awards ceremony. For more information of the Classic Yachts Challenge Series – https://www.classicyachts.org/series/
The membership-driven, nonprofit Classic Yacht Owners Association was established in 2015 to encourage fellowship amongst owners within the classic yacht community. One of the organization’s goals is to help shape the future of the sport by influencing and cultivating long-term regional cooperation amongst those who are dedicated to owning, maintaining, and racing sailing vessels. CYOA also works to promote classic yacht ownership with the objective of attracting new members and creating new funding opportunities to support future classic yacht events.

FUTURE CLASSICS

The defining era of a classic boat is much debated. As creations of ‘neo-classics’ and spirit of tradition yachts are regularly launched this section of Classic Yacht TV will celebrate boats of today and declare some as classics of the future.

To qualify for a Series' award, a boat must be scored in a minimum of 5 races, and 1 of these races must be scored outside the vessel’s declared Racing District. Note that some Series Events have more than 1 race; it is races scored that count.

2023 Results
as of Sept 27, 2023
How to read the Series Results:
- Per the CYCS Notice of Series , to qualify for a boat must be a CYOA Member and compete in 5 individual races across 3 events in at least 2 districts. For district awards, a boat must sail in 3 races across 2 events.
- A boat's High Point Percentage overall score is determined by summing the top 5 points earned in the boat's top 5 races and dividing that by the total number of boats sailed against in those races - then multiplying by 100. Therefore, 5 first places earned over the season would equate to 100%. A tie breaker is determined by whomever sailed against the most boats. For districts, it is top 3 scores. Qualified boats are then ranked by the CRF Division ( the division listed on their CRF Certificate).
- In the case where an Organizing Authority (OA) of an event choose to sail boats from different CRF Divisions against each other or not for race management purposes, where applicable the Corrected Time or Corrected Speed was instead used to rank boats against other boats in their CRF Certificate Division. Therefore, the starting class place earned at an event may differ than the division place for the series. Please note for the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta, the ERR Handicap was removed for a boat's CYCS score.
- The goal of the Series is to encourage friendly competition and find the best way to fairly compare results transparently. A great amount of time was taken to analyze these results and any questions can be directed to Kate Somers: kate @risingt.com

Founder Kenny Coombs’ underlying premise for the original Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta was to create a group of people who shared the same passion for racing vintage and classic yachts in the ideal sailing conditions of Antigua, with its amazing and unique historic background.
The resulting camaraderie between this group, which varied from year to year as different yachts and sailors took part, became legendary, and was one of the chief reasons for the Regatta’s success. Whether you arrived in flip-flops or on a private jet, it was a great leveller.
The new Classics Team aims to restore the original spirit of the Event, which will now take place 19-24 April 2023 during the traditional period prior to Sailing Week. Most events, including registration and dockage, will be in Nelson’s Dockyard. These will include the Single-Handed Race and the Concours d’Elégance, followed by three days of glorious racing, culminating in the famous Parade of the Classics in English Harbour after the last race on the Sunday followed by Prize Giving 6-8pm. Monday will be for rest, relaxation – and fun, with the restoration of Gig Racing at the Admiral’s Inn and thirst being slaked by Cream Teas served by elegant ladies in flowery hats & frocks (stronger beverages will also be available at the bar). A new, slimline version of our famous Programme is also being prepared
The classes of participating yachts will remain the same – Vintage, Classic, Spirit of Tradition, Traditional and Tall Ships – but the former Historic Class has been renamed Modern Classics, defined as monohulls built of any material, with a modern underwater profile such as fin and skeg, and designed over 35 years ago. NB There will no longer be a Dragons Class in this Regatta.
And last but by no means least – after all the whole point of a regatta is to race – the courses, yet to be determined in detail, will be based on the original ones, such as Old Road and the Butterfly, and a modified Kenny Memorial Cannon, with an emphasis on reaching, with some Windward /Leeward legs for the Spirit of Tradition and Modern Classics classes
Despite the late change in dates, we hope to attract participants who share the values of the new Classics Team and would like to join in re-creating the original spirit of this illustrious Regatta. Several boats have already expressed interest in participating including the elegant Adix, the biggest sailing yacht in the world.
We therefore invite any boat interested in taking part in 2023 to email our Regatta Organiser Robin Stout at [email protected] (NB [email protected] is no longer in use).
Similarly, anyone wishing to volunteer their services (the Regatta is largely run on their good will!) should also contact the Regatta Organiser at the same address, together with anyone wanting further information.
Press & Media – photographers and journalists etc, are invited to contact [email protected] too (NB press@antiguaclassics is also no longer in use).
We are looking forward to welcoming you all next year to the 34th annual Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta in Nelson’s Dockyard for some wonderful racing and plenty of celebrations, fuelled by local beer and the typical tipple of the Caribbean: rum!

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic
The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.
The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.
The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.
The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.
For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.
