I was a member for a year. it seems like no one knows what they are doing at that club. when joining you pay up front for a chip card supposed to be 150.00 to spend at the bar or food. I never received the 150.00. I told the commodore like six times. They had a entire year to straighten it out. Never got done. A big booooo to that club.

Photo of Maggie D.

This is not a Review for the Fayerwether Yacht Club, but for the restaurant, Jeffrey's. I just moved to the area and a friend suggested joining the club would be a great opportunity to meet local people. She invited me for dinner to maybe become a member. We had cocktails and the prices (for members maybe?) were incredible. The club was lovely, got introduced to very nice people, The location is also great, right on the water, with a nice deck, and boats coming in and out under a killer sunset. right now I am a fan, ready to become a member, love the place. Then our dinner orders came in: Appetizers - I had the eggplant rollatini. It consisted of a very thin slice of eggplant with a LOT of breading. I could not finish it., that's how bad it was. My Friend had the Antipasto Rustico, which was supposed to be, according to the menu, "Prosciutto, Salami, cheese selection platter, server with parmesan crostini bread". She got a lettuce salad topped with supermarket ham, supermarket salami, and one single cheese, mozzarella. We both complained. The answer I got for my eggplant rollatini was that all other customers were happy with it. My friend was pushier, and got an offer to add Blue Cheese to her single "multiple slices of cheese platter". No Procciuto, no cheese selection. It's Supermarket ham and cheese on lettuce after all. Then I ordered the lobster roll, and my friend ordered the steak. My friend could not eat her steak and kept on pushing it around her plate. It was really tough. The lobster roll I ordered OMG, the meat was grey. It tasted like nothing. I complained to the waiter, he brought the chef over and was assured the lobster meat was real lobster. .. Guess becoming a member now it's off the table. I'll just come in with a friend, no need to pay membership for a place you can't have a decent meal at.

Photo of Roland S.

Wish I had some dinner photos to post on here. Dinner items were the worst we've ever experienced. The lobster roll features imitation lobster. I didn't even know this existed until I came here. The marinera sauce for the chicken parm was straight out of a jar. Waitress overcharged and had know idea what she was doing. Save for the beautiful views and atmosphere do not eat here. Drinks/Cocktails only - be forewarned!

It wasn't bad but could use some improvements tho the food was good but the person that placed our order when she called us we were missing some fries I think they should hire waitresses to come around and take orders instead of us going up to the counter does not make any sense also we came in a Boat and you have a Dock in front of the place and tell us we can't dock there and we have to dock at a different spot and wait for there boat to come pick us up took a while to come get us When these improvements are made will give it a higher rating

What are the Cheapest Yacht Clubs?

The cheapest yacht clubs charge just under $1,000 per year for membership. While this does give you access to different types of experiences, you may be disappointed by the overall amenities.

Some yacht clubs are known for their extravagant country club styles that help you to embrace a particular lifestyle. They include Olympic-sized swimming pools, state-of-the-art tennis courts, and fine dining.

Everything has a beautiful waterfront view. It can feel like you are in the middle of an idyllic paradise without ever even having to leave the shore. If this is what you can gain from the most expensive yacht clubs, you should set your expectations much lower for the cheaper yacht clubs.

The cheaper yacht clubs lack the community aspect of these exclusive options. They feature dry slips and the occasional party, but not much more.

Some of them may have the feel of a county park with some picnic benches, outdoor grills, and a moderately sized swimming pool. Expect a much more casual atmosphere when you choose to go with a cheaper yacht club.

It is even possible that they are simply “paper yacht clubs” that do not even maintain a physical building of their own.

How Much Do the Most Expensive Yacht Clubs Cost to Join?

The most expensive yacht clubs can vary a great deal in price. Most of them will cost between $3,000 and $4,000 per year. However, you can certainly find more exclusive clubs that will cost above and beyond this.

Keep in mind that these more expensive clubs generally are not open to the public. They are offered by invitation only and you must have a member sponsor you to be considered for entrance.

When you are paying for a more expensive yacht club, you should make sure that you are really going to get your money’s worth. These expensive clubs promote a certain type of elegant lifestyle.

Make sure that you are planning to take advantage of all the amenities available from one of these clubs before you sink too much money into the membership fees. The social aspect of these expensive yacht clubs is extremely important.

If you plan to simply rent a boat from time to time, you might be able to go with a cheaper yacht club.

What Is Generally Included in the Membership Fee for Yacht Clubs?

Have you been wondering why you should join a yacht club? Many potential members want to know what they can expect from their membership fees before they commit to a year-long contract. There are many advantages to signing up for a membership with a well-known yacht club.

Amenities and Activities

First and foremost, you get access to activities and cruises planned by board members. These might be various sailing activities, dinners, get-togethers, tennis matches, or other events that take up a lazy Sunday afternoon.

You also gain access to any amenities that surround the yacht club’s marina. For many programs, this means a fitness center, pool, and tennis courts. Several locations also offer fine dining, meeting rooms, and more.

It is like a private oasis where you can get away from the hustle and bustle of the regular world. Time moves slowly when you’re enjoying the amenities here.

Many yacht clubs have programs that introduce children (and adults!) to sailing. Take classes to learn more about improving your technique, sailing safety, and other important aspects of life on the open water.

Access to the Fleet

The main reason why most people join yacht clubs is to be able to rent out boats instead of purchasing their own. Joining a yacht club may give you access to an entire fleet of yachts that can be reserved for a day or weeks at a time. Some yacht clubs allow you to rent boats for up to ten days at a time.

Others do not allow you to rent out ships. They are primarily geared toward individuals who already own a yacht or will own a yacht in the future. Make sure you know the difference in advance.

fayerweather yacht club membership fees

Are There any Additional Costs Besides the Membership Fees?

Unfortunately, the membership fees are not the only cost associated with joining a yacht club. Most of the clubs in the United States also have a one-time initial fee that tends to cost thousands of dollars. Many will range from $1,500 to $5,000 depending on the location and the exclusivity of the yacht club.

This one-time fee should be the only additional money you pay except for fuel. Most yacht clubs do not cover the cost of the fuel used in the ship during your rental if renting is an option. Be prepared for what this could cost you.

If you cause damage to the ship, you can also expect some out-of-pocket costs. Insurance should cover the damage, but you will likely be asked to cover the cost of the deductible.

Be sure to inquire about how much you may be on the hook for before you sign up for any particular yacht club. Accidents can happen, even to the most experienced sailors. Make sure that you can afford the mishap in advance.

Is a Yacht Club Membership Right for You?

Understanding what the real cost of a yacht club membership is can be the first step toward determining if this is right for you. Many people love the luxuries available through the more expensive yacht clubs, but they may not be able to afford it. Consider what is most important in a club to you before deciding to sign on the dotted line for an annual membership.

If You're Thinking of Living In: Black Rock;A Bit of New England In a Troubled City

NINE days ago Bridgeport lost the battle to jump-start its economy when the Connecticut Senate refused to approve a gambling casino for the city. But in the process, its need for job development was vividly exposed.

The city's resilience in the face of some 40 years of economic and social decay, signaled by municipal recovery from the brink of bankruptcy in 1991 to a $4 million surplus in fiscal '95, as well as the state's resolve to assist in its future, continue to be reassuring to owners of the fine old homes in desirable neighborhoods that come as a surprise to those who only know the city because of its well-documented problems.

It's a common misconception that Bridgeport is not on its feet now," said Charles Brilvitch, the city historian. "The turnpike goes through the worst part of the city, giving people the wrong impression. They don't see neighborhoods like Black Rock."

Black Rock is the city's wealthiest section, a peninsula bordering the Town of Fairfield. Named for the stony shore that some residents liken to Maine, Black Rock is physically separated from the rest of the city by the Connecticut Turnpike. Largely hilly and wooded, Black Rock is dense with venerable, spacious houses, dozens of them in historic districts and priced at little more than half the cost of similar homes on Fairfield County's Gold Coast.

Other positives include magnificent water views, convenient shopping in Fairfield, and a strong sense of community. But because it is a part of Bridgeport, many home buyers say no when real estate agents suggest Black Rock.

Negatives include Bridgeport's image, which some Black Rock residents sidestep by using Black Rock, not Bridgeport, as a home address; a public school system whose grade-school pupilsbarely reach the Connecticut Mastery Test's competency level and property taxes that are among the highest in the state. At the rate of $67.80 per thousand dollars of assessment, taxes on a house selling for $375,000 are $8,618.

None of that stopped David E. A. Carson, president and chief executive officer of the Bridgeport-based People's Bank, from moving to Black Rock from West Hartford 12 years ago. He chose a white colonial house in Black Rock even though he had his pick of any Gold Coast community. "We had just become empty-nesters, looking for not too big a house," Mr. Carson said. "This one met all our requirements, and it has a million-dollar view of the water." Weather permitting, he takes his racing shell out for morning rows in the harbor.

"Black Rock is the friendliest community we have ever lived in," he said.

Houses descend in size and price as they get closer to the turnpike and Bridgeport proper. "They are ideal for young families," said Joseph Formato, president of Century 21 Coastal Realty in Fairfield. While houses can be found for under $100,000, "there are no slums in Black Rock as in the rest of the city," Mr. Formato said.

T HE neighborhood does have the more than 400-unit P. T. Barnum subsidized low-income housing project on Wordin Avenue, which is now being completely renovated. The development is next to the Longfellow Elementary School. Black Rock children who do not attend Fairfield Country Day in Fairfield, Greens Farms Academy in Westport or other private schools outside Bridgeport go to Black Rock School for kindergarten through second grade, Longfellow for grades 3 through 8, and Bassick High School. Bridgeport has 44 public schools, almost 21,000 students and no junior highs.

"Our enrollment grew by 600 kids this year," said James A. Connelly, Superintendent of Schools, "which is typical of the past five years. A lot of them are immigrants."

S.A.T. scores are significantly below both state and national averages, but Mr. Connelly said that "we have three magnet schools in the elementary grades for literature, languages, math and science, and three more for the high school -- academic for advanced college placement, marine science and business."

St. Anne's, a pre-K through grade 8 parochial school in Black Rock, charges $1,750 a year. Citywide there are six Roman Catholic elementary schools and one high school.

"Black Rock buyers are not usually from outside the region," said Barbara Franzen, an agent with Prudential Connecticut Realty in Fairfield. "They come from Fairfield and Westport, want the water and are familiar with Black Rock as a uniquely beautiful waterfront enclave. There's very little for sale because people love it and don't move."

Love, however, is not the only reason for staying put. "Where would they go?" asked Mr. Brilvitch. "They might sell a fantastic house in Black Rock for $200,000, but what will that buy elsewhere?" The typical Black Rocker is childless or able to afford private schools, immune to Bridgeport-bashing, and in for the long haul.

David Grimshaw is one of a number of writers and artists who have been attracted to the neighborhood. Mr. Grimshaw, who moved in seven years ago, is president of the Black Rock Community Council, a group of about 600 families and businesses that, among other things, has upgraded the facades and sidewalks on Fairfield Avenue's commercial strip and converted a former residence for elderly women into the Burroughs Community Center. It also conducts ongoing discussions about seceding from Bridgeport.

"We pay very high taxes, commensurate with the higher prices of our homes compared with the rest of Bridgeport," said Mr. Grimshaw, "and we feel that our tax dollars are spent in other parts of the city more than here."

Black Rock could attempt to become an independent community, or rejoin the Town of Fairfield, from which it was annexed to Bridgeport in 1870. "We would need state and city approval," said Mr. Grimshaw, indicating that it would be a highly adversarial procedure. Connecticut has no mechanism for dealing with secession.

Black Rock's relationship with Fairfield began in 1681, when the Unquowa Indians of Black Rock sold their land to the Town of Fairfield. For the next 140 years Black Rock flourished as a port, but the hurricane of 1821 blew away a protective island land mass and sent shippers scurrying to safety in Bridgeport Harbor -- the second deepest in the state after New London.

In 1836 Bridgeport incorporated as a city, and by 1870 it was a thriving industrial hub looking to annex Black Rock to develop it residentially for Bridgeport's industrial tycoons. Black Rock's landowners gladly accepted the annexation, sold off parcels at prime prices and got the city to build them some new roads.

An aura of wealth and good times expanded when, in 1874, George Wells built the George Hotel, a 400-room waterfront resort on Grover Hill. The Bridgeport Yacht Club opened in 1895, and Black Rock Harbor blossomed as a boating center.

"By the beginning of the 20th century Victorian hotels were going out of style," said Mr. Brilvitch, "and the George Hotel land was more valuable as house lots, so it was torn down in 1902. Redeveloped residentially through the 1920's, the area was typical of so-called high class developments -- there were restrictive covenants against Jews" -- which could explain why there are several denominations of churches in Black Rock reflecting waves of Swedish, Hungarian, Irish and Italian immigration, but no synagogues, although they exist elsewhere in the city.

THE Black Rock Yacht Club, opened in 1926, took in 30 members this year, according to Dr. Arthur Samuelson, admissions chairman. Limited in number to 250, members pay initiation fees of $3,500 and annual dues of around $1,350. The club has two tennis courts, a pool, restaurant, and about 80 moorings. There are no slips, because "we are wide open to southwest seas and wind," said Dr. Samuelson.

The Fayerweather Yacht Club, formed in 1919, has almost 1,000 members, 125 moorings, a restaurant, and only a two-month waiting list. Initiation costs $500 and dues are $175 a year.

One of Connecticut's major seasonal tourist attractions, Captain's Cove Seaport, is on Black Rock Harbor. It offers full marina services, a 500-seat dining room, craft shops, entertainment, a fish market, and tours of the H.M.S. Rose, a replica of an 18th century British frigate.

Bridgeport residents need only a $5 parking sticker to be admitted to several public recreation areas, including the beach at Seaside Park, tennis at Glenwood Park, and Beardsley Park, which was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and contains a zoo and carousel. The municipal 36-hole Fairchild-Wheeler Golf Course charges $5 a day in addition to the sticker. Black Rock's sole public park is St. Mary's by the Sea Wildlife Refuge.

A sampling of restaurants includes Black Rock Castle, an Irish pub filled with Celtic music and the aroma of shepherd's pie. The Blood Root Restaurant and Feminist Bookstore is vegetarian, sells books, and caters mostly to women, "but a certain kind of man feels comfortable here," said Selma Miriam, an owner. Home on the Range serves breakfast and lunch, but at 6 P.M. switches to dinners to go. Grilled lamb with roasted vegetables and couscous costs $9.

Cultural attractions in downtown Bridgeport include the Greater Bridgeport Symphony Orchestra, the Barnum Museum -- dedicated to Bridgeport's circus impresario and onetime Mayor -- and the Discovery Museum for children.

"Black Rock's socio-economic life has remained stable in spite of Bridgeport's ups and downs," observed Jack Collins, third-generation owner of the Collins Pharmacy on Fairfield Avenue. "It's one of the few places in Fairfield County where young adults can afford to live where they were born."

The State of Real Estate

Whether you’re renting, buying or selling, here’s a look at real estate trends..

American homeowners could see a significant drop  in the cost of selling their homes  after a real estate trade group agreed to a landmark deal  that would eliminate the standard 6% sales commission.

A pricey housing market and higher interest rates have made it harder to afford a house, but so-called closing costs — for items like loan origination fees, discount points, appraisal and credit report fees — are also adding to the challenge .

As the prices for office space in urban centers tumble, cities whose municipal budgets rely on taxes associated with commercial real estate are starting to bear the brunt .

Homeowners are adding hidden doors and rooms to foil burglars, eke out extra storage space and prepare for Armageddon .

Charter schools are popping up in struggling malls  as landlords look for alternative tenants and communities seek to increase educational opportunities.

As housing costs soar, Washington State wants to limit annual rent increases to 7%. The move is part of a wider trend to impose statewide rent caps .

Business name : Fayerweather Yacht Club

The place, Black Rock, a historic seaside area of Bridgeport, Connecticut. The time, June 1919. World War I had ended only seven months before. A group of sea loving buddies had been meeting next to the rock pile at the foot of Seabright Avenue when they decided it was high time to found a yacht club. After much deliberation, they decided to name the club in honor of Captain Fayerweather, a seafarer, who had been one of the early settlers of Black Rock. The charter members, Dick Terbeck, O. Bloomer, R. True, Paul Lang, John W. Bast and William J. Newton held their meetings by candlelight. When the candle burned down the meeting was over. An old shed near the rock pile served as the first club house. The rent, $15.00 a month, soon became a burden for so few members. It was decided to reopen the charter and solicit new members at the charter rate to help with finances. By 1936 the Fayerweather Yacht Club was prospering in a modest way. There were lockers in the shed and a meeting room upstairs. There was a float for tying up skiffs and a sandy beach where an old marine railway still led down to the water. The railway was a handy place for hauling boats. An old apple tree stood nearby affording welcome shade to the men who often gathered under its branches to talk about boats, fishing and events of the day. The old apple tree also served as a “Dead Man” to which tackle could be fastened for hauling boats up the marine railway on a bed of planks and rollers. In 1936, a crisis occurred. The owners of the club house raised the rent. At that point, the members tried to negotiate a purchase of the site but funds were lacking and the club wasn’t organized enough to undertake a major fund drive. Eventually the property was sold and the club was forced to find another location. A nearby property was located and purchased for $4500.00. Farseeing members created the Fayerweather Holding Corporation which controlled and sold the stock that made the purchase possible. The property and building thus acquired fronted directly on the harbor at the end of Brewster Street. The building, a Customs House in colonial times, had been converted into a charming private home but was now in disrepair. No plumbing or heat, only a central fireplace to ward off the cold. In addition, there were many small rooms. Extensive remodeling was needed in order to make it a suitable clubhouse. The improvements were made with money from fund raisers. By April 1938 an enclosed porch had been added to the south side and a locker room to the north. These changes occurred while Herbert Duncan served as Commodore from 1936 to 1943.
