Yachtsman Steakhouse

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

We have had dinner at the Yachtsman every trip to WDW, about every one-two years, even when not staying at the Yacht Club Resort. Service is usually slower than other fine dining restaurants, but not a problem for us because we like a relaxing dinner.... However, 1 1/2 hours to get our meal AFTER ordering 20 minutes after being seated, is painfully too slow. We had reservations for 5:00pm and the restaurant was not at all crowded when we arrived and about 1/2 full when we left around 7:30pm. We had spent all day in the Parks and were a thirsty so we did ask our server for lots of water. We ran out, over and over. We were updated about our mains about 15 minuets before they were served. We were wondering if there was a problem (sick/didn't show/in training) with chef/s. We had drinks, appetizers and entries but were too tired to wait for dessert. Party of 3 adults with a large tab. Along with the main, we ordered several sides. The truffle mac & cheese was so oily none of us could eat it. French onion soup had very few onions, not much cheese and was mostly broth. Spinach seemed frozen. The meat was good and cooked to perfection. Be prepared to wait a long time for your meal, avoid the sides and bring your own bottle of water if you like to have water before and during your meal. More

We were celebrating our 30th anniversary my parents 60th anniversary and our daughter’s engagement this restaurant made us feel so special. From personalized keepsake menus, celebration desserts and a champagne toast all unexpected. The food was to die for and our server Carrie was the... best. Highly recommend. More

We've been here before and I think perhaps even reviewed previously. I recall that the first time the food was great but the service was a bit lacking (a bit like it was forced or we were being served by someone that really didn't want... to be there). This time however, our server was great, the food was excellent, and with one side dish that wasn't quite right, they left it on the table (for us to eat if we wished), brought a replacement (which was perfect) and took the item off the bill (without telling us). All of it without a single bit of fuss. I cannot think of a better way to handle the situation. We were very well looked after and as a result I am sure we stayed a bit longer, had a second $100 bottle of champagne and had dessert, which we we not planning to. More

The Restaurant was not overly busy. We were a group of 6. Waiter was doing his best but the kitchen and food timing was extremely slow this past Saturday night. Our entrees took over an hour to come out. They were actually giving out mini... desserts. Then when the food finally came some of the appetizers and sides were not right. The manager gave a credit of 20% however, this was really the discount as annual pass holders we should have received anyways. Then I reviewed my receipt at home and realized I tipped $100.00 for the table but then realized that the manager added 18% or 98.64 already on the bill. That again voided the 20% credit by me not being told it was on there by someone on staff. This was on my husband's bucket list and it was his Birthday - he was very disappointed overall and embarrassed he convinced his friends to come celebrate with him. More

There's good reason why this restaurant always has availability and we should have realized that before dinner last night. I've dined here since I was a child and it used to be fantastic from start to finish, but the last few visits have been lackluster... and last night's dinner will be my last at the Yachtman. The night started with a cocktail as the bar as we waited for our table, and that was the best part of the evening. We were seated promptly, our server greeted us a few minutes later and we ordered a bottle of wine. TWENTY minutes later he returned with water. No wine. We then started a countdown clock and planned to leave if the server didn't return with the wine in the next 5 minutes. He dropped the unopened bottle of wine on the table with 45 seconds to spare...and then he left to drop off sodas at another table. At this point, as we stare at the unopened bottle of wine (the only thing other than water on the table) we notice that the vintage is different than what's listed on the menu. Seriously Disney, this restaurant just reopened and the menu is already wrong??? Two tables who were seated several minutes after us, had already received bread and cocktails. Meanwhile, we are closing in on a 30 minute wait for a bottle of wine that requires no preparation like a cocktail does. Finally, the server returned a few minutes later and opened the wine. Success! The starters were lovely - Caesar salad and French onion soup, and as always, the bread was fantastic. The pacing of the meal was great and while we did not see our server again, it didn't matter as the rest of team delivered. Our NY strips arrived, and were served to the wrong person - the person didn't ask who ordered what temperature, they just sat the plates before us, incorrectly. The steaks weren't seasoned well at all, they were bland. I prefer not to use any sauce on a steak, but the sauce was needed to impart any flavor into the meal. The accompaniments had flavor, but weren't enough to save the steaks. This was another disappointing meal at the Yachtman's Steakhouse, and it's sad that the level of service and food has continued to decline. But, if you prefer the old Disney elegant décor and don't care about the meal, the Yachtman is the place. But, if you want a great steak dinner while at Disney World, The Boathouse is the place. It doesn't have the dark-wood old school steakhouse ambiance of the Yachtman, but it has fantastic food and exceptional service (and you won't wait 30 minutes for a bottle of unopened wrong vintage wine to be plopped on your table). More

We loved this restaurant, it was our sanctuary after a day of craziness at the parks, we ended up eating here 7 out of the 12 nights we were staying at the Beach Club. Our son has allergies, and Chef Jimmy was great at making... sure he had what he wanted to eat, he gave us the reassurance we needed which is priceless. The seaters Mark and Nathalie were always so warm, taking the time to make us feel comfortable and relaxed. Servers Raymond and Carrie are brilliant at their jobs, really getting to know how we liked our drinks and food etc. The managers are great too, especially Rebecca, who is so friendly. Oh yes and the food is very delicious too and perfectly cooked! We can't thank them all enough for taking such good care of us, and we very much hope one day to be back! More

Our party of 5 visited for dinner on Dec 26th. We had an amazing meal, and our server, William, (Billy M) was outstanding. His suggestions from start to finish, especially the wine, were all on point! The kitchen was very accommodating to a couple of... omissions/changes that our party requested. Billy stole the show, it was apparent that he loves what he does and because of this, he does it well! Thank you for a memorable meal for us while we were in Disney. More

We dined here a couple weeks ago as a party of 7. It was our arrival day at Disney and I knew we would be hungry so we booked an early 5:15 seating which is just after the restaurant opened. Our server Bev has been... at the Yachtsman for 24 years and it shows. She was amazing. 5 of the 7 of us ordered the filet and they were all cooked perfectly. The bread service was delicious with the garlic and we all were happy with our meals. I also really liked the quieter less chaotic atmosphere here. More

My husband and I had a very poignant milestone to celebrate, so we chose to return to our beloved Yachtsman Steakhouse for the occasion. We requested their primo server, David K, he has cared for our family for years now and has become a lovely... part of our family! His service was, as always, the zenith of quiet attentiveness and kindness, he is a true professional. The food stands on its own, we enjoyed the classic shrimp cocktail and loved the Ahi Tuna Tartare. I usually have the prime rib and my husband orders a filet, both arrived perfectly cooked and delicious. Treat yourself to the Potato Leek Gratin, it is an indulgence worthy of the calories! This great steakhouse and its stellar staff make you forget that there is a theme park a few feet away. More

We came over one night from Epcot because we had eaten here before in 2015 and enjoyed the meal. The service is still excellent; the waiter we had kept checking on us to see if we needed anything during the meal. The appetizers (salad and... Ahi Tuna) were very good along with the bread they bring to the table. Both of us had Filet Mignon and asked for it "medium rare" which one came correct but mine was more medium well; they flame cook the steaks which chars the outside which I do not care for. I didn't bother to ask for the steak to be corrected because we wanted to go back to Epcot in time to still walk around and watch the fireworks; and they would still flame cook another one so why bother. Overall I would give 3.5 out of 5. I would go back in the future and try this restaurant again. More

This is a Signature Dining restaurant on Disney property. There is a dress code requested but clearly not enforced. We checked in a few minutes early and immediately received a text saying our table was ready. We went inside and it still took about 10... mins before we were seated. Once seated our waiter was very friendly and not in a hurry to have us order. We ordered the Lobster Bisque and the Beef Carpaccio. The Beef Carpaccio was different it was a nice light first course, I really wanted the French Onion Soup but was afraid of it being too heavy so this was a nice alternative. My husband enjoyed the Lobster Bisque. The bread service was good and the first course came out very fast, bit after that we must have waited at least 30 mins maybe longer before our main meal came out and really no visit from our waiter. Our reservation was for 7:30 and it was almost 8:45 and we hadn't received our main meal yet. We both ordered the NY Strip, I swapped the sauce for the Blue Cheese-Shallot Butter that normally comes with the Rib Eye - definitely recommend that if you like blue cheese. My steak was over salted, but other than that cooked perfectly, I also got the Haricots Verts (green beans) as my side and my husband got the Potato-Leek Gratin both were very good. Overall food was good but it took so long to get it, and the atmosphere felt more like a family dining restaurant than a signature restaurant. The lights we're very bright, it was very loud and there were surprisingly a lot of kids. Our total bill was just under $200 for a First Course, Main Meal, 1 Beer and 1 Manhattan. We expected a pricey bill but we also expected a better atmosphere and overall better experience. I'm not sure we will be back. We may do the lounge next time to try the French Onion Soup, but that may be it. I think this one was a One and Done for us. More

This was a disappointing experience from check in till the point of seeing charges on my credit card. I would not return, mainly based on quality of service, ambiance, and the steak. Despite showing up on time for our reservation we were forced to wait... 15 minutes to be seated and close to that again before we received service. Clearly they were understaffed. The waiting area did not have sufficient seating for the hoards waiting for tables. Tables are close together and the noise level in restaurant is high. The wine when we eventually got it, was subpar, and the beer was warm. However the appetizers (beef carpaccio and French onion soup) were quite good. Sadly the steak arrived cold, and clearly had been sitting for a while before being brought to our table. When we complained the server argued with us about how the steak should be done. The meat was taken away, the same pieces with our cut marks on them were brought back warmed up. No apology. The bill was about double what we pay at the Keg. Very very disappointing overall from start to finish. More

My family loves this restaurant for the great food and service. Of particular note, we love the whole roasted garlic which comes with the bread service. My family can't get enough! The steaks were delicious and perfectly cooked. The sides were tasty and generous. Overall... - we always have a great time. Very nice dinner out had by all. I wish we had room for dessert as we saw several go by our table but we were just stuffed. The presentation for the dessert looked beautiful! More

Do not waste your money or time at this restaurant. Not only did we have to wait 30 minutes to be seated after our reservation time but the wait to receive main course was quite literally over two hours! The server was incredibly rude as... it was clear she was overextended due to the lack of adequate staffing at the restaurant. Thus she snapped, but to our detriment. Two hours when you have young children at the table in the evening is not acceptable. The food was not "signature" as the restaurant is categorized as a Disney Signature restaurant. Would suggest going to another steakhouse, perhaps in Disney Springs rather than at the Yachtsman. By the time you uber/lyft back and forth from Disney Springs you still likely would save money, time and have better food! Wish we had gone that route. More

We had reservations to celebrate our twins 21st birthday and our 31st anniversary. We were sat and never brought drinks or bread. 55 mins into we had drinks and that was it. 1 1/2 hours into it I requested bread. Well over two hours into... it we asked about our meal. When we were finally served, two of the prime ribs were grey, they had cut the meat and obviously steamed it because they had none cooked. This went on and even the manager came by ONCE and never came back again. We did not even get desert and were rushed out after "eating" what was edible. We paid a tremendous amount for a horrible meal. No Disney magic at this restaurant. Find somewhere else to celebrate and spend this kind of money. More

Yachtsman Steakhouse Review: Disney World’s Most Magnificent Meats?

yachtsman (6)

For the last decade, Yachtsman Steakhouse has been a staple of our Top 10 Table Service Restaurants at Walt Disney World . We’ve praised it as a carnivore’s paradise for glorious cuts of meat and the most approachable Signature Dining for guests who want something straightforward, delicious, and unfussy.

Yachtsman Steakhouse once ranked inside the top 5 on that list, and although it never hit #1, it has been a personal and sentimental favorite for years. With that said, nothing has quite lived up to our first couple of meals at Yachtsman Steakhouse during the heydey of the Disney Dining Plan, when the Porterhouse was served for one and was the size of my head.

It’s been a few years since we last revisited Yachtsman Steakhouse, and some of the recent reader reviews have not exactly instilled confidence. Nevertheless, we had ADRs here in late March until the closure nixed those plans. Since then, I’ve been “patiently” waiting for the last 527 days to devour a gigantic steak from Yachtsman–not that I’ve been counting or anything!

In terms of basic background info, Yachtsman Steakhouse is located at Disney’s Yacht Club Resort and is easily accessible from there, Beach Club, BoardWalk, Swan & Dolphin, any Skyliner Resort, or even Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios. No bus transportation is needed from any of those locations.

Once the Disney Dining Plan returns , Yachtsman Steakhouse is a 2-credit table service restaurant. As with all Signature Restaurants, it’s a poor use of DDP credits unless you’re on the Deluxe Disney Dining Plan. For now, DVC members or Annual Passholders receive a 10% discount.

yachtsman (6)

Thematically, Yachtsman Steakhouse has a distinct New England nautical style. The dining room is light and airy, but punctuated with rich woods, knotty-pine beams, warm lighting, and nautical touches.

The restaurant is by no means loud, but it’s definitely unpretentious. You’ll see a range of patrons here, from families to well-dressed convention guests to older locals who have been dining at Yachtsman for years.

yachtsman (6)

The last Signature Restaurant we did at Walt Disney World prior to Yachtsman Steakhouse was Citricos, and the two strike clearly different tones. Yachtsman is more like a supper or country club, whereas Citricos is akin to a haute cuisine establishment.

I’d hesitate to take kids to Citricos, whereas I’d have no such issue with Yachtsman. (That’s just me, though–it’s Walt Disney World, so children are to be expected pretty much anywhere.)

yachtsman (6)

Both are fine dining, but they have very different “goals” and approaches. The difference is that you go to somewhere like Citricos to sample inventive cuisine and creative flavors, and may drop over $100 while not leaving full.

By contrast, Yachtsman Steakhouse isn’t pushing the envelope and is likewise expensive, but you might need to be wheeled out of there. Each have their place, and appeal to different guests–or even moods of the same guests.

yachtsman (6)

One of the things we truly appreciate about Yachtsman Steakhouse is that it’s still allowed to be itself, free of any totally unnecessary “modernization.”

Some might see the photos here, particularly the carpet and woods, and think this looks dated. We fiercely disagree–this is completely on theme, and has a delightfully personable and warm atmosphere.

yachtsman (6)

Before sunset, light pours in through the restaurant’s many windows, making it bright and fitting of Yachtsman Steakhouse’s more jovial atmosphere.

At night, the dining room is darker and moodier with the warm and low lighting providing a romantic environment. Or at least as romantic as aggressively eating a huge hunk of meat and garlic-laden sides can be. On second thought, perhaps “subdued setting” is the more apt term.

yachtsman (6)

As always, dinner at Yachtsman Steakhouse began with bread service.

The iconic onion pull-apart roll was predictably fantastic. It’s substantial but flaky, and you can peel off its layers, like an onion! It pairs perfectly with either the pink Himalayan salt butter or the roasted garlic…or both.

yachtsman (6)

If you’re looking for something a bit healthier (?), there’s the multigrain cherry roll. This is dense and semi-sweet, but ultimately doesn’t hold a candle to the onion rolls.

No one is going to Yachtsman Steakhouse for multigrain rolls–it’s just not that type of establishment.

yachtsman (6)

We were joined by friends for the meal, and they ordered the Lobster Bisque: Lobster Biscuits, Crème Fraîche and Espelette Oil.

Both of them enjoyed this twist on the New England staple, which appeared to have a hearty amount of lobster biscuits.

yachtsman (6)

For one of their entrees, they ordered the 8-oz Filet Mignon served with Cognac-Truffle Butter and Truffle Fries.

While I believe that a good cut of meat should be able to speak for itself and not need to be bathed in butter for flavor, it’s hard to argue with Yachtsman’s use of that addictively delicious Cognac-Truffle Butter.

yachtsman (6)

For the other entree, they opted for the 16-oz Prime Rib-Eye Steak served with Blue Cheese-Shallot Butter and Truffle Fries.

After stuffing myself on steak, I didn’t do a good job of requesting extensive tasting notes, but both of our friends enjoyed their steaks. No rave reviews or overly-enthusiastic accolades, but general satisfaction seemed to be the meal’s mood.

yachtsman (6)

For our entree, Sarah and I ordered the Chef’s Signature Offering: 28-oz Porterhouse for Two served with Cognac-Truffle Butter and Choice of two Steakhouse Sides.

This is a behemoth, but also is priced at $139. If I recall correctly, it’s a 2-credit upgrade on the Disney Dining Plan, meaning that doing Yachtsman Steakhouse and ordering this Porterhouse will set you back 4 credits.

yachtsman (6)

I hate to be one of those curmudgeonly old men who shouts, “ back in my day, Coca Cola cost a nickel at the corner soda stand! ” when seeing fountain drinks for $5 at a restaurant. However, it wasn’t too long ago when this Porterhouse was for one and only 2 credits or under $60 out of pocket. (In fact, when we dined here in 2012, the 24-ounce Porterhouse cost $46.)

Of course, times and prices change–that much is to be expected–but the cost has more than tripled in less than a decade. On the plus side, it’s 4 ounces larger and comes with one additional side now. Still, it’s a steep price even when compared to other options here–or the superlative Chuletón Bone-In Rib-Eye at Toledo Steakhouse .

yachtsman (6)

The Chef’s Signature 28-oz Porterhouse for Two at Yachtsman Steakhouse was very good, but fell a little short of greatness.

It delivered in terms of tenderness, marbling, a robustly meaty flavor, and impressive presentation. If I weren’t paying for this and didn’t know how much it cost, I’d have no complaints. A satisfactory steak through and through, just not one that blew us away.

yachtsman (6)

Perhaps we’re being unrealistic, but at this price point, we simply expected more. To each their own, but I’d say it’s about $40 overpriced at $139.

We’ve done a number of porterhouse or ribeye steaks (both for one and for two) over the years. This was above average, but still middle of the pack. I’d put it behind the aforementioned counterpart at Toledo (which is now served as a 4-course dinner for two, priced at $129) and also other options at third party hotels in both the Crescent Lake and Bonnet Creek areas at Walt Disney World.

yachtsman (6)

Now let’s turn to the sides. For our first option, we chose the Truffle Macaroni & Cheese. An unsurprising pick given that we’re suckers for this dish.

I’ve previously remarked that there’s “no such thing” as bad truffle mac & cheese, only varying degrees of good or great. Assuming that’s true, this was the “least good” truffle mac & cheese we’ve had in years. It was surprisingly dry and lacking in flavor. None of the richness or cheesiness we’d expect.

yachtsman (6)

At the other end of the spectrum, the Roasted Seasonal Mushrooms were absolutely phenomenal.

Consisting of four varieties of mushrooms, these had a deeply rich flavor and were prepared in a way that let the mushrooms stand on their own while enhancing them. These mushrooms were an unexpected standout from our meal.

yachtsman (6)

We finished with Yacthsman’s Chocolate Cake: Dark Chocolate Mousse, Chocolate Decadence Cake, Mixed Berry Curd, Peanut Butter Crunch and Mousse.

Like our Porterhouse, this signature dessert also serves two and has an impressive presentation.

yachtsman (6)

We had very different opinions about this. For me, this wholly embodied Yachtsman Steakhouse–a pretty but straightforward and indulgent dessert. Big and totally unpretentious, with bold but crowd-pleasing flavors.

Sarah though it was all “too much,” with over-the-top decadence, plus flavors and textures that didn’t come together particularly well. I can’t totally disagree with her–this certainly isn’t among my top 10 desserts at Walt Disney World–but the presentation coupled with the chocolate, peanut butter, and berry flavors worked well enough for me.

yachtsman (6)

Ultimately, Yachtsman Steakhouse has a sense of comfort and familiarity that you won’t find at many Walt Disney World restaurants anymore. Many of the Cast Members have been there for years and offer professional but personable service. The atmosphere and style are warm and welcoming. The menu is full of magnificent meats and other steakhouse favorites. It’s hard to put my finger on exactly why or how, but it’s the kind of place that would make Ron Swanson shed a single tear–and that’s something special.

However, Yachtsman Steakhouse no longer feels like the unparalleled Walt Disney World spot for steaks that it once was. Many other Signature Restaurants serve up similarly great cuts of meat, but with their own ambitious twists or more competitive pricing. Two recent additions–Toledo and Topolino’s Terrace–come to mind here, but so too do a wide range of restaurants at Disney Springs and in flagship restaurants at third party hotels that are on-site. To be sure, Yachtsman Steakhouse is still a restaurant we’ll revisit down the road, but between an improved “steak scene” elsewhere at Walt Disney World and higher prices at Yachtsman, it’s no longer the clear-cut chophouse champion.

Nothing touches the Yachtsman in my book. I’m blessed to have eaten in several steak houses across the country and this beats them all. I’ve also dined at the other signatures at WDW and the Yachtsman beats them all in my book, for a great steak dinner. When I eat at the Yachtsman, it’s an evening long experience shared with people I love, and we know how to live! Can’t wait to go back next month!

The burnt ends (the best part) were dry and tough – another cue to the amount of time that elapsed between the window and her table. For this kind of money, you expect a perfect cut of meat. Chrissy also got the Potato-Leek Gratin as her side, and while the flavor was good, you could tell from the matte appearance and lack of sheen on the crust that it had been sitting out. It was very frustrating and she can only assume it’s because they’re short-staffed? Ugh.

Final Thoughts

There were a few things Chrissy found to be pretty good, but there are literally dozens of other options at Walt Disney World that taste far superior and cost way less. She will visit again in a few months to see if the new staff has gotten into a better groove. This feels more like a Disney staffing failure more than anything else and that makes it more disappointing.

5 thoughts on “ Yachtsman Steakhouse: Fool Me Twice. . . ”

We always try to eat at The Yachtsman Steak House for our special occasion’s. We are eating there tomorrow to celebrate our April birthdays. We have never been disappointed the New York Strip is there specialty and our go to along with the Caesar Salad and French Onion Soup!!! Always amazing and always excellent service. They must of had a rough re-opening but it’s hands down our favorite Steak House along with Morton’s and Ruth’s Chris. I have heard that Charlie’s is very good also but this is our go too.

The Yachtsman once again blew me away last week with three great trips to my favorite restaurant. This place will never be beaten in my eyes. The steak, wine, service, appetizers, onion soup, truffle mac, etc, are always incredible. Now that I won’t be visiting the parks, the meals at the Yachtsman will only improve with the likes of Opus One, Tignanello, Margaux, Caymus, etc.

This was disappointing to read. I ate here in February 2020 and loved every second of it…an experience I’ll never forget.

So, nothing’s changed at Yachtsman Steakhouse! We were there Apr. 2019, Sat. evening before Easter (end of Spring Break)

Truly THEE WORST steak meal I’ve ever had.  We knew we were in trouble when husband asked server if the New York steak was “prime” (a quality GRADE of meat, not a CUT) and she said, “No, the prime rib is over here.” Uh-oh. Server had no business being in a high-end restaurant; she was awful & nothing but attitude.

We didn’t order appetizers, but wanted to share some sides instead.  One side never showed up; the other didn’t come until meal was halfway over, and it was cold & over-salted. (we also had to ask *twice* to have the never-served side removed from bill)  His steak was meh, and my prime rib was so full of fat and unchewable cartilage, I barely got 6 bites total. Discount store quality; 5-star prices Both were cold enuf the “rare” was turning purple & oxidizing, yuck. The manager did make his way to our table, seeing I was struggling, and DID comp my meal, which was the least they could’ve done since it was inedible.  Hands down the worst meal I’ve ever had at a fine dining establishment! I wouldn’t return even if someone else is paying. Sad to hear it’s still same ol’, same ol’

I hope this place steps it up but it seems, from the reviews, it is much the same as before it closed. So many better options just a few minutes away, Flying Fish (when it opens) and Shula’s come to mind.

O Yachts Class 6

SIDE02-SMALL-1

Description

Safety at speed.

Dan Lévy launched O Yachts with the Class 4, a design by Lerouge, and he has followed this success up with the Class 6 , a design that is turning heads and making waves in the catamaran industry. The O in O-Yachts stands for Owner – these are catamarans that are developed with their owners in a partnership with the yard.

Dan’s first aim from his Latvian base, northeast of Riga, is to produce yachts that protect their owners from anything that the weather can throw at them, and that can eat up the nautical miles offshore safely, at speed. The Class 6 is setting high standards. This is a world cruiser that is competing strongly with the likes of the Garcia Explocat 52 and the HH range.

Like the O-Yachts Class 4 , this bigger boat is a catamaran for sailors and their families who want to travel big distances over an extended period of time in safety and comfort. It’s a very spacious yacht that is capable of fast cruising in a controlled fashion, whatever the state of the sea.

Keeping the Weight Off With a length of 19.50m (64 foot), the O-Yachts Class 6 weighs only 15 tonnes light. Go for the full carbon option and this number comes down to 13.5.

Dan Levy, along with Laurent Bourgnon (sadly no longer with us, double winner of the Route du Rhum, as well as the Transat Jacques-Vabre  with his brother Yvan), dreamt up this catamaran whose signature feature is a spine or longitudinal central beam that provides the boat with rigidity, stability and buoyancy in steep waves. The mast and forestay are fixed to this structure and the design allows for a large 44 square metre living space unhindered by cross beams.

Keel or Boards? In light winds, the Class 6 will sail at wind speeds and over. Make your own wind for more sailing and less motoring! The large, curved dagger-boards (an option, you can also specify keels) give a draft of 3.8 meters or 12½ feet when down, helping the Class 6 to pinch upwind, particularly in calmer conditions.

The first priority of this boat is safety at sea, but make no mistake – this is a comfortable catamaran that goes places fast (and gets you out of trouble quickly). Performance means safety and 300 nm a day in good conditions is the target on this boat.

There is more than 44 m² (473 sq ft) of living space in the nacelle. Who needs a flybridge increasing your windage and forcing your sail and centre of effort higher?

High Tech Construction

Talk to Dan Levy, and this is clearly an area that he is passionate about. One of the keys aspects of producing a safe boat is strength, so the Class 6 has been “over engineered” in this respect. There is a spectrum of materials you can choose from, depending on your wish list and budget. These range from Vinylester resin/carbon-glass-kevlar/Gelcoat on the Performance pack to Epoxy resin/100% carbon + kevlar/paint on the Race pack.

yachtsman (6)

Weight control is a big factor in the design of these yachts, so  carbon fiber is used for all the outer and inner skins. Foam is inserted into this sandwich, and the whole packagage is vacuum infused with epoxy and reinforced with Kevlar in high stress and potential impact areas.

This all-carbon construction gives a light displacement of 15 tons, with an ability to carry loads up to a total weight of 18 tons. The spine means that there is no forward crossbeam, and it gives an impressive rigidity to the narrow hulls. The axe bows are also designed to efficiently pierce through waves and space is maximised through the use of chines.

With the curved daggerboards option and lifting rudders mounted in a well, the draft can be reduced to 0.9 m (3 feet).

Sailing – Safety First

yachtsman (6)

Examples include a rotating mast and carbon boom with hydraulic furling system. The staysail, genoa and gennaker, can also furl hydraulically. The sail plan emphasises the priority of this yacht which is safety. You will be matching wind speed with the main and XL Genoa (104m2) in light air (3 to 10kts). With a Code 0 or Gennaker flying off the bowsprit, you will be sailing faster than TWS.

The steering systems can be configured as wheel steering or tiller steering with seats.

Mainsail, Genoa, Solent and Storm Sail The O Yachts Class 6 typically comes with a mainsail and genoa which can be unfurled with a press of a button. You will have a variety of lighter wind sails to fly off the bowsprit (Code 0, 280 m² gennaker, also on hydraulics). With these flying you will be faster than wind speed on a reach in calmer conditions. With the sheets coming back to hydraulic winches at the helm, it doesn’t take long to furl the genoa and deploy the self-tacking staysail if the wind picks up. And this being a safety first boat, there is an option for a storm sail as well.

Centred Mast Another benefit of the spine is that it has enabled the designers to set the mast further back than you would normally see on a comparable catamaran. This is a trick more recently used by Gunboat on their 68 to achieve a balanced sail-plan, and it means that the main sail area is only 109m2 (or 1173.27 sq) ft in favour of more sail area up front: which is easier to manage of course. The centralised mast position also helps to give a stable, smooth ride.

Living Space

This is an  area where the Class 6 excels. The saloon/cockpit area is 44 m² or 475 square feet, a huge living space with an enormous galley. This is a French designed boat after all.

The sliding window at the back of the saloon opens right up to give you an Open+ design. Down below, the berths are wide with island beds in the aft cabins thanks to those chines. Forward, the berths are arranged athwartships and higher up, in order to accommodate the performance of the bows. Foam sandwich is used in the furniture to keep the weight down.

yachtsman (6)

That said, the choice is yours on this boat: pick one of the following options:

– Fixed keel (Simple, more buoyancy) – Daggerboards – Asymetric daggerboards – Curved Asymetric daggerboards

The whole idea of the Class 6 is to keep the engines off, but how does she perform coming into the marina?

She Motors Well, the Class 6 comes with twin 80 HP Yanmar engines. You will begin to appreciate the shape of those hulls, as with these running at 2,500 rpm, you will be pushed along at ten knots in a steady sea, using around 11 litres per hour (2.9 US gal/h).

Use half the fuel and only one engine and you will cruise comfortably at 7 knots.

The O Yachts Class 6 competes in a hot market segment:  luxury fast catamarans. But what sets the Class 6 apart, is its emphasis on safety and comfort.

Yes, this boat is fast, but that’s almost a by product of this innovative design. The living space feels like a New York apartment. The boat has been kept light, is rigid and has a punchy sail plan (without being overpowered).

If you are looking for a yacht to take you long distances, the Class 6 ought to be on your shopping list. Dan claims that the Class 6 is the best catamaran a couple can manage without skipper. It is hard not to agree with him.

There is even a power version, with a Smart Hybrid power unit (one diesel engine, one electric).

Virginia woman killed alongside her husband was raped by escaped prisoner who stole their yacht: police

T he Virginia woman believed to have been killed alongside her husband by escaped prisoners who commandeered the couple’s yacht in the Caribbean was allegedly raped by one of their murderers, according to police.

One of the three men charged with the couple’s murder allegedly raped Kathy Brandel, 71, before the trio killed her and her 66-year-old husband Ralph Hendry on their sailboat last month, according to the Royal Grenada Police Force.

Ron Mitchell, Atiba Stanisclaus and Trevon Robertson were all charged Thursday with two counts of capital murder as well as escaping lawful custody, housebreaking, robbery and two counts of kidnapping, police said.

Stanisclaus, 25, was also charged with one count of rape in the deadly case. Royal Grenada Police confirmed that the rape charge is related to an assault on Brandel in a statement to the Daily Mail .

Royal Grenada Police did not immediately reply to a question about what evidence led to the additional charge, given that cops have not recovered Brandel’s body.

The bodies of the couple have not been found since they were last seen near their docked catamaran named “Simplicity” in St. George’s, Grenada on Feb. 18 — the same day the three men allegedly broke out of a police holding cell on the island.

Police believe the escapees hijacked the sailboat while the couple were on board. It was found anchored and deserted days later.

Large amounts of blood were found on the ransacked boat but Hendry and Brandel were nowhere to be found. Police believed their killers threw their bodies overboard while sailing to St.Vincent.

The three men were arrested in St. Vincent on Feb. 21 and were sent back to Grenada on Monday, where they were arraigned in court and sent back to prison.

The men were originally being held on robbery charges before their escape.

They are expected back in court on March 27.

Brandel and Hendry, experienced cruisers, were living on their sailboat at the time of their brutal deaths.

The couple’s children remembered their parents in a touching statement.

“We live in a world that at times can be cruel, but it’s also a world of profound beauty, wonder, adventure, love, compassion, caring, and faith,” they wrote in a statement.

“Our parents encompassed all those values and so much more. If we have learned anything from this tragic event, it’s that we know they left this world in a better place than it was before they were born.”
