REGULAR WEEKLY SAILBOAT RACES

Year-round sunday series,  sunday series schedule & results.

NEW :  Quick link to the pre-planned courses page.

Fleet List and race scoresheet

We're in one of those fortunate places that is possible to have year round sailing. So why not take full advantage of it. We offer four series covering each season of the year. Each series consist of eight Sunday races and the best seven will count. On cancelled races there won't be any make up race.

Our race procedure is simple: We pick a course that everyone follows.  Sometimes we all start at the same time and sometimes we have pursuit races where the slower boats start first. In the case of one start races we report our elapsed time and we determine the positions after calculating the adjusted time for each boat using its PHRF rating. In the case of pursuit races the finish order is the race result.

For a more formal description check out our  Sailing Instructions document   ( updated Feb07/22 re use of engine in emergency)

Also check out this excellent pdf document " The Basic Sailboat Racing Rules All Racers Should Know "

Pre-planned courses Effective July 2020 we have pre-planned a number of courses which are intended to be used in both pursuit racing and in races where all boats start at the same time. Here they are: ("IH" means "In-Harbour", "OS" means "Outside the Harbour). Check out our new courses page! See Regatta page for 2022 Regatta course diagrams. Pursuit Race Start Times matrix Effective Sept 1/21 we have replaced the previous start times listing with a spreadsheet in the form of a matrix where knowing the course length and your PHRF rating (to the closest 5 secs) you can look up your start time. This system is fully described in our August 2021 Newsletter - please check that out if you have any questions. Click here to see the new m atrix.

Sunshine Coast Ocean Regatta 2021

Photo of YachtBoatNews

The Sunshine Coast Yacht Club will again be conducting the popular Sunshine Coast Ocean Regatta (SCOR 2021) on 17 and 18 July in the sparkling coastal waters between Noosa and Caloundra, with a feeder race from Brisbane on 16 July.

Registrations are open for boats in divisions IRC/ORCi, AMS and PHS – Monohulls and Multihulls. The Sunshine Coast Ocean Regatta (SCOR. 2021) offers an alternative to the regattas in Airlie and Hamilton Island and further north in August, for sailors wanting to do a shorter regatta this year. Save on the expensive entry fees and HF’s or satellite phones!

IRC / ORCi, AMS and PHS racing for Monos and Multis will be a series of up to 6 races conducted over two days; Sat 17th to Sun 18th July, 2021.

The races will remain within sight of the beautiful Sunshine Coast with views to well known landmarks such as Mudjimba Island, the Point Cartwright Lighthouse, Glasshouse Mountains, Mount Coolum and Mount Ninderry. In addition to windward/leeward races, there will be longer races which will make use of fixed navigation marks such as the Gneerings cardinal mark and the Mooloolaba Waverider Buoy.

The Regatta is open to owners of suitable racing and cruising yachts and multihulls. Berths for visiting competing boats at Mooloolaba Marina will be available for 16 and 17 July for early entries at no charge, dependant on availability.

This year there will a feeder race on Friday 16 July from QCYC (Queensland Cruising Yacht Club at Shorncliffe) to SCYC (Sunshine Coast Yacht Club at Mooloolaba). The B2SC 2021 (Brisbane to Sunshine Coast) will include IRC, AMS and PHS divisions and also, for the first time, will feature a short handed division (2 sailors per boat) to cater for this format which is becoming increasingly popular, nationally and globally. Entry fee of $20; with trophies and prizes to a value of $1,000.

The original Sunshine Coast Ocean Regatta ran for 20 years through the 80s and 90s. It attracted huge names within the yachting industry, such as Hugh Treharne – the tactician of Australia’s winning America’s Cup team. In its prime, the prestigious event would host up to 60 boats.

Notice of Race and entry forms for both events can be found at  www.scor.com.au . Entries can be sent to the SCYC Regatta Office, together with the entry fee of $100.00 for SCOR and/or $20 for B2SC.

Come and enjoy a more relaxed pace of sailing on the beautiful Sunshine Coast at SCOR 2021.

Sunshine Coast Cruise

Our three stop Sunshine Coast cruise began on Friday, August 16 with the arrival of three boats at the Garden Bay Pub & Marina in Pender Harbour. Bacalao, Panache and Me Shell all settled in to the dock before gathering for heavy appetizers aboard Bacalao that evening. Hosts Martin & Katherine, Bill & Guest Dan and Steve & Michelle were joined by Ed & Diane who had arrived by land since Papa D’Eau was permanently moored nearby. Everyone enjoyed cocktails and great food while getting to know each other better. One of the advantages of a smaller cruise

Saturday was mostly a day to explore Pender Harbour and to pick up any last minute provisions for those going further north. Steve & Michelle picked up members of their crew who had flown in from California to join them on their Desolation South cruise. Later the 8 of us onboard boats dinghied over to the docks below the Grasshopper Pub. After a monumental hike uphill we met up with Ed & Diane and enjoyed great wine and craft beer with our pub dinner enjoying the view over the harbour. We said our goodbyes to the crew onboard Me Shell and Panache who would be continuing north the next day.

On Sunday, Bacalao headed out early and was joined by Papa D’Eau enroute to Bowen Island. It was a bit of a windy and rocky ride from the mouth of Pender Harbour south to Gower Point where both boats opted to tuck in to the lee of Bowen Island. From there it was smooth sailing into the Union Steamship Company Marina in Snug Cove where Gran Marnie-Eh was already docked with co-hosts Richard & Marnie onboard. After settling in and shopping for dinner the 6 of us enjoyed a salmon and steak meal onboard Gran Marnie-Eh courtesy of the Club. The next morning some of us took advantage of the fine weather to hike around nearby Killarney Lake. After an afternoon on our own exploring the shops nearby we enjoyed a tasting at the Copper Spirit Distillery followed by a communal supper at the iconic Doc Morgan’s Pub.

Photo #3 Caption

After bidding adieu to Papa D’Eau Tuesday morning, Gran Marnie-Eh and Bacalao continued to the last stop of the cruise in False Creek where Katherine & Martin anchored out and Richard & Marnie returned to their home port. The 4 of us enjoyed another evening of beautiful weather overlooking False Creek from Mahoneys Pub. The next morning we were treated to a bespoke tour of the Vancouver Maritime Museum where Richard, a long time museum volunteer, gave us the insider scoop on the history and operation of the St. Roch, a former RCMP expedition ship.

Overall we lucked out with the good weather and generally favourable seas. With such a small group of cruisers it was a wonderful opportunity to get to know cruisers we had met and briefly chatted with at bigger events previously

Sunshine Coast Ocean Regatta & Brisbane to Sunshine Coast

yacht clubs sunshine coast

May 21, 2021

Entries are now flowing in for both the Sunshine Coast Ocean Regatta and its feeder race Brisbane to Sunshine Coast. SCYC Members and their families are excited about welcoming this year’s fleet of competing yachts on the Sunshine Coast. The annual Regatta in  mid-July 2021 is generating a lot of interest amongst yachts going north for the Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island regattas.

Some Yacht owners without the time this year to sail to north Queensland for the tropical regattas are favouring SCOR 2021 on the Sunshine Coast.

Registrations are open for boats in divisions IRC/ORCi, AMS and PHS – Monohulls and Multihulls.  With an entry fee of just $100 (including for multiple Divisions) SCOR 2021 is proving to be attractive to many boat owners. There will be a series of up to 6 races conducted over two days: Sat 17th and Sun 18th July, 2021. In addition to “around the buoy” races, there will be longer races which will make use of fixed navigation marks such as the Gneerings cardinal mark and the Mooloolaba Waverider Buoy.

A number of yachts from the Brisbane area have been missing good local ocean racing during the “Covid year” and plan to do the B2SC  from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast on 16 July as a feeder race to the SCOR 2021 regatta. This race leaves from Queensland Cruising Yacht Club at Shorncliff to Sunshine Coast Yacht Club at Mooloolaba. The B2SC 2021 will include IRC, AMS and PHS divisions and also, for the first time, will feature a short-handed division (2 sailors per boat) to cater for boats favouring this format which is becoming increasingly popular, nationally and globally. The entry fee for B2SC is $20; with trophies and prizes to a value of $1,000.

Skippers from past SCOR regattas are telling the Sunshine Coast Yacht Club that they will be back in 2021 to enjoy the relaxed but competitive sailing with true open waters racing off the much-loved Sunshine Coast. They are also looking forward to meeting new sailors at the social events organised for the regatta.

Registration for both events is now open with the Notices of Race and Entry Forms on the website at https://scor.com.au/

Entries can be sent/emailed to the SCYC Regatta Office, together with the relevant documentation and entry fees:
