Sailing yacht Hevea launched by Southern WindThe second hull from Southern Wind’s new 102 DS series was launched in Cape Town a few days ago. This 31.42m sailing yacht has been christened Hevea . A successor to the popular SW 100 DS series, the SW 102 DS is a composite sailing yacht with naval architecture by Farr Yacht Design and general design, exterior and interior styling by Nauta Design. The first hull, called Almagores II , was launched in May 2012 . She's one of the finalists in the World Superyacht Awards 2013. Compared to her sister, Hevea has a standard layout with the owner suite forward, and the crew area aft. Her sophisticated interior accommodates eight guests in four cabins: a master suite, a VIP, and two twins. The 36.3m single mast of the SW 102 DS will allow for a sail area of 477m², and in light winds she will be powered by a single 305hp Cummins QSB 5.9 MCD engine. Hevea will be delivered for the upcoming season. She will be also presented at the Monaco Yacht Show in September. Southern Wind also announces the construction of a third hull of this series, but this time in the Streamline version (SW 103). And their next launching will be the first SW 82 sailing yacht in May. Southern Wind Shipyard launched "Hevea"Martin Hager · 16.05.2013 "Hevea" is currently embarking on her maiden voyage of 7500 nautical miles, typical of Southern Wind formats, to the Mediterranean, where the owner will take delivery of her. In contrast to her sister ship "Almagores II", which was commissioned last year, "Hevea" will set sail with a carbon fibre mast made of high modulus fibres, which the crew will trim using EC6 carbon shrouds. This rig setup saves almost two tonnes of weight. On the wind, 517 square metres of laminate provide propulsion, while a 230-kilowatt Cummins diesel works as a lull pusher. Sailing Yacht Hevea Embarks On Maiden VoyageBy Ben Roberts Southern Wind Shipyard has proudly announced the departure of their 40th sailing yacht Hevea, the new SW 102 DS, which is on it's way to the Mediterranean on her maiden voyage. The new Southern Wind 102 DS sailing yacht Hevea has departed the shipyard under her red gennaker across Cape Town’s waters, showing at a glance her beauty and her strong personality, shaped by her owner, a businessman with a passion for comics. Launched in late February 2013, Hevea has just left Cape Town for her maiden voyage of 7500nm from South Africa to Genoa (Italy), a unique test for the boat. Less than one year after the launch of Almagores II, Hevea is the unit number 2 of the fortunate model SW 102 DS. Hevea is designed by the same trusted team that has penned many other SW models: Nauta Yacht Design for the general design, deck and interior design and Farr Yacht Design for the naval architecture, sail plan and appendages. Southern Wind Shipyard’s leadership in the 100 feet range is clearly shown by the SW 100 DS series, with 13 units built in just six years. The new SW 102’s goal is to be as successful as her predecessor in the same SW semi-custom production range, but with more modern hull lines, a remarkable gain in the volumes and an enchanting new touch of magic. This project benefits of the technical background of the yard’s current flagship, Southern Wind 110’ model, concerning the use of the spaces. Hevea has wider volumes compared to Southern Wind Shipyard’s masterpiece, the SW 100 DS. Those volumes have been generously conveyed into the saloon, the cabins, as well as into the engine room, the sail locker and the lazzarette. The style of the interior, one of Hevea main features, is at the same time essential and modern: the ceruse oak together with the carbon details create a special atmosphere on board, both during the day and the night time. Large volumes and lightness are Hevea key qualities and make her absolutely unique in the 100 footers league. Southern Wind Shipyard is presently working on the third SW 102, in her Raised Saloon version, whose launch is expected for mid 2014, as well as on the first two SW 82 units, the first of which will be launched in June 2013. Hevea will be officially presented as a world première during the forthcoming Monaco Yacht Show, which will be held in Monaco from the 25th to the 28th September 2013. Southern Wind’s 102’ HeveaSouthern Wind Shipyard relied on a trusted team of naval architects and designers to build Hevea, a custom yacht that can travel long distances, even through some of the world’s coldest waters. The owner clearly wanted a yacht that would let him and his family travel the world in style, safety, and comfort. This put special pressure on designers to build a unique vessel that could travel thousands of miles without leaving guests stranded in unfamiliar waters. To meet these goals, Southern Wind Shipyard teamed with Farr Yacht Design and Nauta Yacht Design, the same groups that have worked on many other Southern Wind projects. The result has been even better than expected. Going the Distance in Hevea Hevea uses some of the world’s most sophisticated nautical technology to offer the distance and safety desired by her owner. Her sail spans 517 square meters, making it possible for her to pick up light up light winds. When the sea doesn’t offer enough wind, she relies on a Cummins 305 hp engine. Her 4,815-liter (1,272-gallon) fuel capacity gives the boat a wide range, even when she cannot use the wind to push her forward. Two 19 kW Onan generators provide power throughout the ship. Of course, Hevea’s passengers need plenty of supplies to get them through lengthy trips. a 2,500-liter (660-gallon) water tank holds enough water for guests and crewmembers. When the tank runs low, a HEM 2 water maker fills it so guests never have to worry about going thirsty or missing showers. Long trips also require expansive storage space. This posed challenges for exterior and interior designers because they needed to provide plenty of living areas for the owner, his guests, and crewmembers while offering enough space for them to store food, clothing, and other necessities. Farr Yacht Design also met the challenge of designing a large yacht that could travel long distances safely. The team used lightweight materials to design a flat, wide aft and unique hull shape that helps Hevea remain upright at all times, even when traversing choppy waters and inclement weather. Enjoying Life Aboard Hevea Hevea was designed to travel long distances (a challenge she met immediately during her maiden voyage when she traveled 7,500 miles), but she also needed to meet the level of comfort and convenience expected from luxury yacht owners. Nauta Yacht Design worked tirelessly to make sure that every inch of Hevea’s interior space offered a useful function as well as a beautiful addition to the boat’s overall aesthetic. The designers chose to create dining and saloon areas that give guests a sweeping view of the ocean. The rooms have large windows that let natural light fill the interior. A dining table and long, built-in couches help create the perfect area for socializing and relaxing during trips. Hevea has four cabins that can hold up to eight guests comfortably. Three additional cabins provide room for up to five crewmembers. Guest cabins are perfectly appointed with built-in beds and drawers. Recessed lighting illuminate the cabins while bedside lamps provide extra light for reading. Ceruse oak provides a light, airy feel throughout the rooms that coordinate well with Loro Piana fabrics. The owner’s suite offers a truly luxurious experience that includes ample headroom, an en suite, built-in couches, and custom-designed drawers that feature transparent front panels. Above Deck on Hevea Designers put just as much hard work into creating the perfect above deck space as they did designing the interior spaces. The central cockpit provides a comfortable place for guests to relax and take informal meals. Separating it from the aft cockpit means that the owner and his guests can enjoy themselves in privacy while the captain steers them toward their destination. Guests can also relax on electronically adjustable chaise longues or a sunbathing pad located at the foredeck. These simple embellishments give the owner and his guests a safe, comfortable way to experience the surrounding ocean on warm days. If they venture into colder climates, they can retreat below deck to enjoy its exceptional comfort. At first glimpse, Hevea might look like any number of sailing yachts. A closer look, however, reveals special details that make it a truly exceptional yacht. By bringing together a team consisting of some of the world’s best naval architects and designers, Southern Wind Shipyard has exceeded all expectations. If this is the result of the builder’s past experiences, then the future only holds greater things for buyers lucky enough to purchase yachts from Southern Wind. Video shows moments before superyacht went down in storm off SicilyNewly released video captures a luxury superyacht being battered by a violent storm before it suddenly sank off Sicily with 22 people aboard Monday. The grainy images obtained by NBC News and other outlets were recorded on closed-circuit television not far from where the Bayesian was anchored, about a half-mile from the port of Porticello, on Sicily’s northern coast . The yacht's 250-foot mast, illuminated with lights and lashed by the storm, appears to bend to one side before it finally disappears and is replaced by darkness. The speed with which a yacht built to handle the roughest seas capsized stunned maritime experts. “I can’t remember the last time I read about a vessel going down quickly like that, you know, completely capsizing and going down that quickly, a vessel of that nature, a yacht of that size,” said Stephen Richter of SAR Marine Consulting. British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and five of the 22 other people who were aboard the 184-foot vessel remain unaccounted for and are believed to be trapped in the Bayesian’s hull, nearly 170 feet underwater. Officials confirmed Monday that at least one person, the ship’s cook, had died. Superyachts like the Bayesian, which had been available for charters at a rate of $215,000 a week, are designed to stay afloat even as they are taking on water to give the people aboard a chance to escape, Richter said. “Boats of this size, they’re taking passengers on an excursion or a holiday,” Richter said. “They are not going to put them in situations where it may be dangerous or it may be uncomfortable, so this storm that popped up was obviously an anomaly. These vessels that carry passengers, they’re typically very well-maintained, very well-appointed.” Built by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered Bayesian could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters. On Tuesday, Italian rescue workers resumed the search for Lynch and the five other passengers still missing: Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife. “The fear is that the bodies got trapped inside the vessel,” Salvatore Cocina, the head of civil protection in Sicily, told Reuters . The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was one of the 15 people rescued Monday after it capsized. “It’s extremely rare for a boat of this size to sink,” Richter said. What’s not rare is the kind of storm that sank it , said Simon Boxall, senior lecturer in oceanography at Britain’s University of Southampton. “People assume the Mediterranean is this rather calm and passive place that never gets storms and always blue skies,” Boxall said. “In fact, you get some quite horrendous storms that are not uncommon at this time of year.” The president of Italy’s meteorological society has said Monday’s violent storm may have involved a waterspout, essentially a tornado over water, or a downburst, which occurs more frequently but doesn’t involve the rotation of the air. Luca Mercalli, president of the Italian Meteorology Society, also said recent temperatures may have been a factor. “The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius [86 Fahrenheit], which is almost 3 degrees more than normal,” Mercalli told Reuters. “This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms.” The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who two months ago was acquitted by a San Francisco jury of fraud charges stemming from the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion. Prosecutors alleged that Lynch, dubbed “Britain’s Bill Gates,” and Autonomy’s vice president for finance, Stephen Chamberlain, had padded the firm’s finances ahead of the sale. Lynch’s lawyers argued that HP was so eager to acquire Autonomy that it failed to adequately check the books . Lynch had taken Morvill, who was one of his defense attorneys, on the luxury trip. Chamberlain was not on the Bayesian. In what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a car struck and killed Chamberlain on Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said. “Steve fought successfully to clear his good name at trial earlier this year, and his good name now lives on through his wonderful family,” Chamberlain’s lawyer, Gary Lincenberg, said in a statement . Henry Austin reported from London and Corky Siemaszko from New York City. Henry Austin is a senior editor for NBC News Digital based in London. Corky Siemaszko is a senior reporter for NBC News Digital. Manslaughter Probe Launched After Bayesian Yacht Sinking Kills British Entrepreneur, Morgan Stanley Chief- Share to Facebook

Italian authorities have launched a manslaughter investigation into the captain of the luxury Bayesian sailing yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily last week in a wreck that killed seven people, including Britsh tech entrepreneur Michael Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, and Morgan Stanley International director Jonathan Bloomer. Italian Coast Guards take part in searches of missing off Porticello near Palermo, on Aug. 21, 2024. Italian prosecutors will investigate James Cutfield, the captain of the Bayesian, for manslaughter after the ship sank in rough weather overnight on Aug. 18, multiple outlets reported Monday. The investigation will look into if the crew of the ship appropriately handled the storm that hit the yacht before it capsized, if passengers were warned of imminent danger and if hatches on the ship were left ajar, which would have contributed to its quick sinking. As part of the probe, the ship will be raised from the waters in which it sank later this year, CNN reported , at the cost of registered owner Angela Bacares, the wife and mother, respectively, of victims Michael and Hannah Lynch. The Bayesian, named for a mathematical theory, is currently about 50 meters (164 feet) below the surface near the port of Porticello in Sicily, Italy, and sank less than a minute after it capsized. Officials have said the passengers who died—Michael and Hannah Lynch, Jonathan and Judy Bloomer and Chris and Neda Morvillo—were likely asleep at the time of the sinking. Notices of investigations into an incident must be issued in Italy before autopsies can be done on victims, Reuters reported , and the opening of a probe does not necessarily mean formal charges will follow. Key BackgroundThe Bayesian is a 184-foot luxury sailing yacht with a 246-foot aluminum mast—the tallest of its kind in the world. It is legally owned by Bacares and her late husband "had a lot of pride" in his yacht, a staff member told The Times of London. The Lynch/Bacares family was on board with seven guests and the boat was anchored when a storm hit overnight on Sunday, Aug. 18. The harsh weather included a " waterspout ," a tornado-like swirling column of air and water, that caused the vessel to top over and it was then quickly dragged underwater. Of the 10 passengers, six died in the capsizing and their bodies were recovered last week. There were also 12 crew members on board and one, Recaldo Thomas, also died. Among those resued were Bacares; Charlotte Golunski, a partner at Lynch's Invoke Capital, along with her partner and her baby daughter; lawyer Ayla Ronald and her partner. Lynch, Bloomer and Morvillo were all involved in a massive fraud trial that saw Hewlett-Packard accuse Lynch and others of artificially inflating the value of his software company, Autonomy, before HP purchased it in 2011. Lynch was indicted for conspiracy and wire fraud in the sale but was acquitted alongside his co-defendant Stephen Chamberlain, who was killed in a car crash in the U.K. the same weekend the Bayesian sank in Italy. Bloomer testified for the defense at Lynch’s trial, according to the Associated Press , and Morvillo was one of the lawyers on the case. Further Reading- Editorial Standards

Advertisement Supported by Final Body Is Recovered From Yacht That Sank Off SicilyHannah Lynch, the 18-year-old daughter of the British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, was on board a yacht that was hit by a storm and went down in the early hours on Monday. By Emma Bubola and Elisabetta Povoledo Emma Bubola reported from Porticello, Italy, and Elisabetta Povoledo from Pallanza, Italy. For nearly a week after a violent storm sent a luxury yacht to the bottom of the sea off the coast of Sicily, Italian scuba divers plunged deep underwater, moving through ropes and fallen objects inside the yacht in a desperate search for the six people missing. On Friday, the recovery of the body of Hannah Lynch, 18, put an end to the wrenching search and to the slim hopes that any of the missing people might have survived. Ms. Lynch, the daughter of the British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, who also died in the yacht’s sinking, was the last person to be formally unaccounted for since Monday after tragedy struck a group that had been celebrating her father’s acquittal in a high-profile fraud case. There were 10 crew members and 12 passengers on board the 180-foot vessel, the Bayesian, when it was hit by a storm and went down about 4.30 a.m. on Monday, the boat’s management company said on Friday. Fifteen survived. The body of the ship’s cook, Recaldo Thomas, was found on Monday, a few hours after a downpour hit the northwestern coast of Sicily, near the port of Porticello, where the yacht had been anchored. But it took several days to recover the bodies of the six passengers who were apparently trapped inside the yacht: Mr. Lynch and Ms. Lynch; Jonathan Bloomer, the chairman of Morgan Stanley International; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Christopher J. Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford Chance; and his wife, Neda Morvillo. On Friday, a round of applause could be heard from the firefighter’s tent set up on the dock in Porticello after the last body was pulled out in what the corps described as a “complex” search operation at a depth of about 165 feet. The firefighters said they had made 123 immersions into the sea to try to retrieve the bodies. The body bag was then loaded onto an ambulance. A local man had left a small wooden cross on the rocks in front of the dock where the bodies were brought ashore. Mr. Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, was among those who managed to reach the safety of a raft. They were rescued by a sailing schooner that had been bobbing about 150 yards from the yacht. In a statement, the family thanked the search teams and said that it was enduring a “time of unspeakable grief.” “The Lynch family is devastated, in shock and is being comforted and supported by family and friends,” the statement added. As prosecutors from the nearby city of Termini Imerese began conducting interviews with the survivors and possible witnesses, the crew and passengers of the Bayesian have been confined to a local hotel, where the news media have been denied access. Salvatore Cocina, the head of Sicily’s civil protection agency, said on Thursday that the survivors had turned down the psychological assistance his department had offered to them. In Porticello, the sprawling presence of rescue services made a haunting backdrop for an otherwise tranquil port town. People sunbathed and ate ricotta-filled pastries, and stores selling sandals and dried fruit opened as normal, while coast guard and firefighting vessels came and went from the shore, taking scuba divers out to the shipwreck. Other reminders of the tragedy could be seen along the coast, among palm trees and ice cream shops, with groups of onlookers staring out at the sea, now tranquil and flat. Local and national news organizations have complained that prosecutors have not issued a statement or held a news conference. Prosecutors may shed more light on the yacht’s sinking when they hold a news conference on Saturday. The marine accident investigation branch of the British transportation ministry was also looking into the shipwreck of the vessel, which was registered in Britain. One of the major questions is what caused the boat to sink: Was it the fault of the boat maker, of the crew or of a powerful act of nature — or some combination of the three? None of those who were onboard the Bayesian have spoken publicly. The luxury yacht, built by the Italian manufacturer Perini Navi and launched in 2008, had the second-tallest aluminum mast in the world, according to its makers. Giovanni Costantino, the chief executive of the Italian Sea Group, which in 2022 bought Perini Navi, has been assertive in defending the design and construction of the yacht, saying that the Bayesian would be “unsinkable” if the proper procedures were followed. But yacht design experts have cautioned that the lesson of the Titanic, the ocean liner that sank on its 1912 maiden voyage, showed that no vessel, no matter how robust, was worthy of that label. Nautilus International, a maritime-focused labor union, criticized any implication that the crew had been at fault, especially at this stage. In a statement , the union’s general secretary, Mark Dickinson, said, “Experience tells us that maritime tragedies are always the result of multiple, interconnected factors,” and he urged people to refrain from drawing any conclusions until a thorough investigation had been carried out. The investigation into the causes will take months, prosecutors said. Michael J. de la Merced contributed reporting. Emma Bubola is a Times reporter based in Rome.
