About Poland

Why is Poland a good sailing destination?

Poland, often celebrated for its rich history and architectural wonders, is also a treasure trove for sailing enthusiasts. Its diverse water landscapes, ranging from the expansive Baltic Sea coast to the labyrinth of lakes in the Mazury Lake District, make it a unique destination for those seeking both serenity and adventure on the waters.

Firstly, the Baltic Sea coastline, stretching over 500 kilometers, presents a blend of sandy beaches, rugged cliffs, and pristine coves. Sailing here, one can’t help but be enchanted by the panoramic views of the horizon, punctuated by iconic landmarks such as the shifting dunes of Słowiński National Park or the historic lighthouses guarding the coast. The marine diversity, especially around the Hel Peninsula, offers a delightful experience for those interested in marine life.

Venture inland, and you’re welcomed by the Mazury Lake District, often dubbed as the “Land of a Thousand Lakes.” This intricate network of interconnected lakes and canals is a haven for those looking to explore secluded spots, away from the typical tourist trails. These freshwater bodies, surrounded by lush forests and traditional Polish villages, provide a tranquil backdrop for relaxed sailing, fishing, or even wild swimming.

Additionally, Polish marinas and ports, like Gdynia and Gdańsk, are renowned for their world-class amenities and welcoming communities. They not only offer state-of-the-art facilities for sailors but also act as gateways to explore Poland’s rich maritime history, exquisite seafood cuisine, and vibrant cultural festivals.

With Yachting.Rent, your Polish sailing experience is further elevated. Our in-depth knowledge of local attractions, commitment to safety, and fleet of luxurious yachts ensures that your voyage in Polish waters is both enriching and comfortable. Discover Poland’s hidden aquatic gems with us and redefine your sailing expectations.

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Poland

Poland’s diverse waterways, from the majestic Baltic Sea coastline to the serene Mazury Lake District, provide an array of sailing experiences. But to truly capture the essence of this European gem, one must sail aboard the right vessel. At Yachting.Rent, we often get asked the classic question: Sailing boat or catamaran for the Polish waters? Let’s delve into the specifics to help you make an informed decision.

Sailing Boat: Authentic Charm & Versatility Traditional sailing boats offer an authentic sailing experience. With their deeper keel and slender profile, they are perfectly suited for the open waters of the Baltic Sea, where one can harness the winds for a spirited sail. Their streamlined design offers greater maneuverability, especially useful when navigating the narrower waterways or docking in historic Polish marinas. If you’re looking to hone your sailing skills or simply relish a classic experience, a sailing boat is your go-to choice.

Catamaran: Space, Stability & Comfort Catamarans, with their dual-hulled design, reign supreme when it comes to stability and space. This makes them an ideal choice for larger groups or families, offering spacious cabins, ample deck areas, and modern amenities. Their shallow draft is a significant advantage in the Mazury Lake District, allowing you to explore hidden coves and lesser-known spots. If comfort, stability, and space top your priority list, a catamaran promises an unmatched experience.

Conclusion: Your Voyage, Your Choice Poland’s sailing landscape is diverse, and the right vessel often hinges on personal preferences and the kind of adventure you seek. Whether you’re yearning for a spirited sail along the Baltic coast or a leisurely cruise through the tranquil lakes, Yachting.Rent ensures a vessel that aligns with your vision. Our expert team is always on hand to guide you through the selection process, ensuring that your Polish sailing escapade is nothing short of perfection.

Poland’s Thriving Yacht Building Industry: Yacht Style Special, Part 1

In the first of a two-part feature on Poland’s booming boat building industry, Yacht Style focuses on luxury yacht brands Sunreef, Galeon and Conrad.

Sunreef Yachts has been helping raise the international profile of Polish yacht building since Frenchman Francis Lapp founded the luxury catamaran builder in 2002 in the historic Gdansk Shipyard, on the country’s north coast. And Poland’s profile as a major player in the yachting world recently took another leap after Rafa Nadal was announced as a future owner of the new 80 Sunreef Power.

Rafa Nadal, with Francis Lapp, is buying an 80 Sunreef Power catamaran

Rafa Nadal, with Francis Lapp, will receive his 80 Sunreef Power catamaran in 2020

Nadal – one of tennis’s all-time greats, with 18 Grand Slam titles – viewed the model’s world premiere at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival, although his customised version, hull number four, is due for delivery in 2020.

“As someone from an island, the sea is part of our lives and it’s not a secret that I love the sea,” said the Spaniard, who has previously visited and chartered Sunreef catamarans.
“When I’m at home in Mallorca, I try to go out and find that time where I can just enjoy my time on a boat. I am very happy to be on board with the Sunreef Yachts family and would like to thank Francis Lapp for making this possible.”

Lapp’s company has been on a roll in the past year and has already sold over a dozen units of its 80 sailing catamaran, which only made its debut at Cannes last year. From producing about 10-14 units a year, Sunreef completed 17 in 2018 and this year expects to produce about 24, a company record.

“It has been a spectacular year for us,” says Karolina Paszkiewicz, PR and Marketing Director of Sunreef. The company now has over 720 employees, with about 500 from Poland and over 200 from Ukraine, a remarkable head count for a company that customises the layout and interior of every yacht.

Sunreef has sold over a dozen units of its 80 sailing catamaran

Yet Sunreef’s super-luxurious catamarans are a stark contrast to the historic but decaying brick-walled sheds in which they’ve been built for the past 17 years. The company is now in a transition to a nearby four-hectare (40,000sqm) facility, with the move from Gdansk Shipyard set to be complete by 2020.

GDANSK BECOMES BOATING HUB

The enormous shipyard is situated on the side of the Martwa Wisla river and on Ostrow Island, and established Gdansk as one of northern Europe’s leading shipbuilding cities.

It was also the site of iconic protests in 1980 led by former shipyard electrician Lech Walesa that led to the foundation of the Solidarity movement and eventually the end of communist rule. In the mid-2000s, Jean-Michel Jarre and then Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour played big concerts here in tribute to the movement.

Gdansk Shipyard was founded as a state-owned company in 1945 on the sites of former German shipyards considerably damaged in the Second World War, while other large-scale shipyards emerged in neighbouring Gdynia, as well as Szczecin to the west.

Poland also developed as a boatbuilding nation after the Soviet leadership chose it to produce yachts, among other products, for all countries from the Eastern Bloc. Even today, many yachts cruising the waters of the former Soviet states – Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia – are labelled as ‘Made in Poland’.

In the 1980s, yachts built in Poland started to be exported, primarily to northern and western Europe, and North America. However, with the political changes following the end of communism, many of the biggest yacht-building companies went bankrupt and new privately owned companies emerged.

BOAT FACTORY OF THE WORLD

Poland became home to production facilities for many foreign brands, including several from yachting’s two biggest conglomerates – France’s Beneteau Group and USA’s Brunswick Group.

In 1992, Jeanneau was among the first foreign companies to
build boats in Poland. Today the Beneteau Group has a 16-hectare (160,000sqm) facility in Ostroda, an hour’s drive southeast of Gdansk, that employs about 900 people and builds Beneteau and Jeanneau boats, including the Merry Fisher 895 Marlin that features in this issue’s Islands & Coasts .

Sailing boats by prolific Polish builder Delphia Yachts, which was acquired by the Beneteau Group late last year and is now focusing on motor boats

Sailing boats by prolific Polish builder Delphia Yachts, which was acquired by the Beneteau Group late last year and is now focusing on motor boats

Last year, Beneteau Group added a second facility in Poland – and another brand – when it bought Delphia Yachts, one of the country’s biggest yacht builders and now focused on motor boats at its facility in Olecko in the northeast of this country of 38 million people.

Brunswick brands like Sea Ray, Bayliner and Quicksilver are also built in Poland, while other foreign companies that have boats built in the country include Hanse from western neighbour Germany, Denmark’s X-Yachts, Finland’s Axopar, and Norway’s Windy and Askeladden.

The vast majority of yachts built in Poland, including by
local brands, are exported and overall production has ramped up dramatically in recent years. According to Polboat (Polish Chamber of Marine Industry and Water Sports), the value of the country’s exported boats doubled from 2013 to 2017, rising from €241m to €484m.

Polboat also announced that the country’s annual production recently returned to its pre-2008 financial crisis high and has since bettered it, with 23,000 boats in a year and turnover increasing by 15 per cent. About 95 per cent of the boats are exported, primarily to Norway, France, USA, Netherlands and Germany.

Sebastian Nietupski, President of Polboat, says: “Poland has benefited from European grants for investments, so many of our boatyards have brand-new machinery and the latest technology”

Polboat President Sebastian Nietupski says Poland has benefited from European grants

Furthermore, Polboat states that Poland is Europe’s leading producer of motorboats with outboard engines from 6-11m (20-36ft), while globally it’s second only to the USA.

“Poland produces a lot of boats for local brands and also a huge number for foreign brands. This shows we’ve built trust and that this is one of the best countries to produce boats and invest in,” says Sebastian Nietupski, President of Polboat.

“This is now one of the best times ever in Poland as we have benefited from European grants for new projects and investments, so many of our boatyards have brand-new machinery and the latest technology. This is a really strong asset.

“But we don’t just want to produce or follow. We want to be leaders, to be the best. We want Poland to be known for the best fuel-economy solutions or the most innovative designs. In fact, because of brands like Galeon, foreign shipyards are now copying our design ideas.”

GALEON MOTORS AHEAD

There’s a healthy representation of local brands among the massive number of Polish-built boats exported around the world, with Galeon leading the local charge and still growing fast, globally and particularly in the US.

A Galeon 650 Fly takes pride of place in this year’s Wind and Water show in Gdynia

A Galeon 650 Fly takes pride of place in this year’s Wind and Water show in Gdynia

Established in 1982 in the communist era, Galeon now has 1,400 staff working on 30-49ft models in its inland site in Straszyn and 50-78ft yachts at its bigger site, with marina, along the Martwa Wisla river.

From building about 80 boats in 2016, its units increased to 120 the following year and 150 in 2018, even though the company is slowing down production of its 30-40ft models.

Across the world, Galeon has become renowned for innovations like the rotating cockpit sofa and ‘Beach Mode’ drop-down sides, features first incorporated on the Tony Castro-designed 500 Fly unveiled at Cannes in 2015. Such features have since been rolled out on other models including the 460 and 640.

The brand’s huge growth in the US has followed its sales partnership from 2016 with MarineMax, the world’s largest yacht retailer, while other dealers around the world include Hong Kong-headquartered Asiamarine and Alexander Marine Australia.

“Our innovations have brought us a lot of success around the world in the past few years, although we’ve only been really active in the US in the last three,” said Grzegorz ‘Greg’ Tuszynski, Galeon’s Managing Director.

Galeon’s riverside facility has a marina and is the larger of its two production sites

“Last year we were already fourth in sales among 40-70ft motor yachts in the US, making us the top European or non-American brand. We expect this ranking to increase in 2019 and are hopeful of eventually becoming No. 1, while also growing in Europe, Asia and Australia.”

CONRAD BRINGS SUPERYACHT ACCLAIM

Poland enjoyed further acclaim in May when the Conrad 133’ Viatoris , built in Gdansk, was honoured at the World Superyacht Awards in London, winning Best Displacement Motor Yacht 300- 499GT – 30-47.9m.

Conrad Shipyard has generally been a custom-boat builder and has in the region of just 80 full-time staff, but can also draw on the resources of its parent company, Marine Projects, which has about 400 people working in its waterfront site on the Martwa Wisla.

With a name inspired by Heart of Darkness author Joseph Conrad (born Jozef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski), Conrad was established in 2003 and has worked on a wide variety of motor yachts, classic tugboats and large sailing yachts, including tall ships such as the 67m Le Quy Don for the Vietnamese navy.

However, when the 40m Viatori s, designed by Reymond Langton for a Russian owner, was shown at both Cannes and the Monaco Yacht Show last year, it enabled Conrad’s build quality to be compared with the most renowned superyacht builders.

Conrad’s 133ft Viatoris, pictured in the heart of Gdansk’s Old Town, was a winner at the 2019 World Superyacht Awards, another success for Polish yacht building

Conrad’s 133ft Viatoris, pictured in the heart of Gdansk’s Old Town, was a winner at the 2019 World Superyacht Awards, another success for Polish yacht building

“Presenting Viatoris at Cannes and Monaco put us in a completely new market. Viatoris showed we can be compared with superyachts from the Netherlands, for example, and for a good price,” says Michael Michalczewski, Conrad’s Marketing and Sales Director.

“Also, as it was more of a commercially viable project, we can now go down the route of offering semi-custom builds, using the Conrad 133’s naval architecture.”

Because of its rich shipbuilding history, Poland is well known for its body work, and local shipyards often construct the hulls or superstructures for globally renowned superyacht builders, particularly from Germany and the Netherlands.

Dutch conglomerate Damen Group, the parent company of renowned superyacht builder Amels, has a marine-components facility in Gdansk and its own shipyards in Gdynia and also Kozle in the south, west of Krakow. In recent years, Damen Shipyards Gdynia built the 140-tonne aluminium superstructure for the 83m Here Comes The Sun , Amels’ largest yacht to date.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is reja 24.

The REJA 24 registration system is an innovative electronic registration system developed by Government of Poland to provide a fast and economical way to register pleasure yachts under 24 metres in hull length.

The Charter of Polish Registered Yachts

To charter a commercial yacht under the Polish flag the vessel must hold a valid Karta Bezpieczeństwa Jachtu Morskiego (Yacht Safety Certificate).

The first step of the certification process is the performance of a technical inspection. For yachts under 15.00 metres in length the inspection is carried out by the Zespół Techniczny Polskiego Związku Żeglarskiego (Offshore Technical Committee of Polish Yachting Association) or for yachts over 15.00 metres in length by the Polski Rejestr Statków (Polish Register of Shipping).

The yacht must then be equipped depending upon vessel length and sailing area as detailed in the relevant merchant shipping legislation. All yachts to be commercially registered must undergo a final Port State Control inspection to confirm compliance with the applicable regulations.

Do I have to choose Port of Registry

In order to register under polish flag you have to choose one of its see ports. Those are as follows:

  • Gdańsk
  • Kołobrzeg

Polish AIS & MMSI Radio License service

In case you also require an AIS & MMSI Radio Licence including ATIS, MMSI number and call sign, we can provide this for you without any problem.  Radio licences for Polish registered vessels are issued by the Office of Electronic Communications (Urząd Komunikacji Elektronicznej). Radiolicences are valid for ten years.

Note that a Polish registered vessel must hold a Polish radio licence as opposed to a radio licence issued by any other radiolicensing authority – for example a radio licence issued by the UK radiolicensing authority OFCOM is not valid for use on a Polish registered vessel.

Ukraine-Russia war latest: Moscow rages over Cameron strike remarks, warns of 'direct escalation' and threatens Denmark

During a visit to Kyiv, Lord Cameron said Ukraine has a "right" to strike inside Russia, just as Moscow's forces are doing. Meanwhile, the fall of the eastern town of Chasiv Yar looms closer. Listen to a Daily podcast on whether the UK should send troops to Ukraine as you scroll.

  • Live reporting by Lauren Russell

That's it from our live coverage for today - thanks for following along.

Before we go, here is a quick reminder of today's updates:

  • Lord Cameron has been in Ukraine where he told Sky News that the UK will appoint a new envoy to oversee a plan to ramp up the production of weapons and ammunition, which is now a "national priority";
  • Russia is planning to launch a three-factor plan to destabilise and claim victory in Ukraine, a top Ukrainian military intelligence officer has said;
  • The Kremlin branded Lord Cameron's comments about Ukraine striking inside Russia "dangerous and worrying";
  • Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu has praised the "new regions" troops have taken control of in Ukraine since the start of the year.

Now to Georgia, which is not directly involved in the war in Ukraine, but whose future is seen as highly significant in the context of Vladimir Putin's ambitions for Russia.

Draft legislation, known as the "foreign agents" law, is winding its way through the Georgian parliament and would require organisations receiving more than 20% of their funding from abroad to register as agents of foreign influence.

The proposed law has been attacked by opponents as authoritarian and Kremlin-inspired.

Protesters have taken to the streets of capital Tbilisi for weeks to show their opposition, while the European Union and the United States have urged Georgiato drop the legislation or risk harming its chances of EU membership and a broader Euro-Atlantic future.

The stand-off is seen as part of a wider struggle that could determine whether Georgia, a country of 3.7 million people that has experienced war and revolution since the fall of the Soviet Union, moves closer to Europe or back under Moscow's influence.

Video below shows protesters in Tbilisi blocking traffic as part of their efforts to prevent the bill being passed.

A regular feature of news coverage surrounding the war in Ukraine has been the frequently bellicose statements that have emanated from one of Vladimir Putin's most prominent allies, Dmitry Medvedev.

The deputy chairman of the security council of the Russian Federation is notorious for his inflammatory language and repeated invocation of Cold War-style nuclear threats, which tend to be widely dismissed by most Western commentators.

Indeed, some analysts have suggested the former president's penchant for such wild outbursts are specifically designed to frame himself as an erratic character who could not be considered a viable rival to Mr Putin - thus avoiding the fate of other figures considered a threat to the leader's authority.

It is through that lens that many will view his latest comments, which ostensibly cover his thoughts on the Ukraine peace conference due to take place in Switzerland in June - to which Russia has not been invited.

His assessment is perhaps unsurprisingly dismissive, even going as far as to imply the summit represents positive news for Moscow.

"What is Russia's gain of the Swiss 'peace conference'?" he asks in his post on social media.

"It's actually threefold. First, it will come as yet another proof of failure of the so-called peace plan by the halfwit zelensky (sic)."

He follows that by referring to Ukraine's leader as "the bandera b******", seeking to associate him with a Ukrainian far-right leader of the mid 20th century.

The Kremlin has long sought to depict Ukraine's leadership as far-right neonazis, efforts that have been widely dismissed by commentators on the region.

"Second, it will be visible evidence of the full impotence of the present-day western elites, who have performed painful self-castration of their own potential to stop the military conflict," Mr Medvedev continues.

"What's more, it has been done on direct orders given by a group of senile doctors from Washington.

"Third, it will allow our Armed Forces to further cleanse Malorossia's [little Russia's] territories from neonazis without any hindrance and regard for some c***'s 'peace initiatives'."

After forecasting "the final collapse of the former Ukraine’s political regime", he concludes: "Thank you, the land of cheese and watches!"

Russian officers has been welcoming foreign military attaches in Moscow today during their visit to an exhibition of Western military equipment captured from Kyiv forces during the fighting in Ukraine.

The event organised by the Russian Defence Ministry features more than 30 pieces of Western-made heavy equipment, including a US-made M1 Abrams tank and a Bradley armoured fighting vehicle.

More now from Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, who has been speaking to journalists this afternoon.

She has said any move by Denmark to restrict the freedom of navigation of Russian ships in the Baltic straits will be seen as a hostile act and draw retaliation.

It is unclear exactly what prompted the threat, but we'll bring you any more detail as we get it.

Denmark has played down suggestions it will begin checking Russian tankers moving through its waters to establish whether they have the correct documentation.

The country allows ships calling at Russia to use its waters due to a longstanding freedom of navigation treaty, although the country's armed forces have said it is standard procedure to track them.

The Baltic straits - the only natural exits from the Baltic sea to the North Atlantic - are notoriously difficult to navigate and international maritime authorities strongly recommend the use of pilots with specialist local knowledge.

However, it is believed more than 20 tankers - so-called shadow vessels - transporting Russian oil but with unknown ownership, have declined offers to use Danish pilots since the start of 2024.

And the Danish Maritime Authority said in a statement in March that a tanker from Russia's shadow fleet was involved in a collision near Denmark.

The incident involving the 15-year-old Andromeda Star oil tanker took place on 2 March.

A Russian activist has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for attempting to set fire to a military conscription office in protest against the war in Ukraine.

Angel Nikolayev, 39, was convicted on charges of terrorism for placing two bottles of a flammable substance in the windows of a conscription office in the eastern city of Khabarovsk and setting them alight.

He was also convicted of damaging Russian flags that were put on the graves of soldiers killed in Ukraine at a local cemetery and removing symbols of Russian military action from a bus stop and several vehicles.

Since 2022, hundreds of people have faced criminal charges in Russia over protests and remarks condemning the war in Ukraine, and thousands have been fined or briefly jailed.

Russia is ready to consider "serious" peace talk proposals to settle the conflict in Ukraine, Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has said.

Speaking at a press briefing this afternoon, Ms Zakharova said the talks must be based on existing "realities" and Moscow's security concerns.

She said part of the proposal would include Ukraine pledging to remain militarily neutral in future.

Russia proposing the possibility of peace talks is nothing new.

Despite suggesting it is open for discussion, it always seems to blame Ukraine or the West for the breakdown of negotiations.

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said troops have taken control of 211 square miles (547 square kilometres) of Ukrainian territory this year.

He referred to the territory as Russia's "new regions".

Mr Shoigu told a group of senior military commanders that Ukrainian forces were retreating along the frontline and that Russian troops were breaking a network of "Ukrainian strongholds".

"Over the past two weeks, the Russian armed forces have liberated the settlements of Novobakhmutivka, Semenivka and Berdychi in the Donetsk People's Republic," he said.

"The Ukrainian army units are trying to cling on to individual lines, but under our onslaught they are forced to abandon their positions and retreat."

Ukraine's top commander said last week that a number of troops had fallen back to new positions in villages on the eastern front.

The advances mean Russia now controls around 18% of Ukraine.

As reported here earlier, Moscow has had a predictably indignant reaction to Lord Cameron's statement's yesterday during his trip to Ukraine (see 10.34am post).

Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has offered a further reflection of displeasure within Vladimir Putin's regime, claiming the British foreign secretary's comments amounted to an acknowledgement that the West was waging a war against Russia using "Ukrainian hands".

Lord Cameron said yesterday that Ukraine had a right to use weapons provided by London to strike targets inside Russia, and that it was up to Kyiv whether to do so.

"Cameron's words are further evidence of the hybrid war the West is waging against our country," Ms Zakharova said.

"Russia is responding to that and will continue to respond."

Russian's Vladimir Putin is planning to visit China later this month to meet President Xi Jinping, according to a report by Bloomberg News.

The visit is scheduled for 15-16 May, Bloomberg reported, citing a person familiar with the Kremlin's plans.

It comes after the White House said it remained "deeply concerned" that it was not seeing China make any changes amid accusations it is helping Russia's military with its war in Ukraine.

Next week, Mr Xi will visit Europe for the first time in five years.

Beginning in Paris, France, he will visit Hungary and Serbia, the latter of which is a close ally to Mr Putin.

China has always maintained that it remains an objective and just party over the war, adding that its trade relations are "above-board".
