Nantucket Yacht Club offers several races a week that give experienced sailors an opportunity to test their skills, as well as new and more in-experienced skippers a chance to pick up a fun, new hobby.  Check below for a brief description of our races and boat types required for each race.  Our calendar lists all race times.

Mondays - Bandit 22LTE Regatta

Every Monday Nantucket Yacht Club hosts the Bandit 22LTE  Race.  The 22LTE is one of the most popular racing boats in Second Life which can be easily learned in just a few minutes.  Check out our Calendar for race times and make sure to arrive a few minutes early if you're new racing with us.

Tuesdays - Shields Class

The Shields boat has locked sails, which means adjusting them at the same time making this boat very easy to learn right away.  The best part of it all, it's FREE.   Grab one and join us at our next Shields race.  Check the Calendar above for our race time and we'll see you at the start.

Wednesdays - alternating every other week between Shields and the Trudeau 12M Yachts

Every other Wednesday races at the Nantucket Yacht Club are alternating between the Shields class boat and the Trudeau 12m yacht.  Please check the calendar for schedule.

Thursdays - Big Boat Regatta

Every Thursday we are hosting the big boat regatta.  A list of boats available for this race can be provided to you upon request. In this race a handicap system will be used to calculate the winner.

Fridays - Star Class

Come test your skill in this exciting small boat every Friday at 1 o'clock SLT.  Only the Star X or the Star with Uggo Mod versions are allowed in this race.

The club has a fleet of boats including thirteen Optimists and several Beetle Cats, Lasers, Sunfish, Club 420s and Rhodes 19s, and offers an array of sailing programs for beginner to advanced children and adults. The Jobson Sailing Center was named after Gary Jobson, who has been instrumental in developing the GHYC sailing program.

GREAT HARBOR YACHT CLUB  BECOMES NSHOF FOUNDING MEMBER

The GHYC Clubhouse is modeled after the old Nantucket Steamship building and will provide some of the most stunning views on the island. Set on the harbor's waterfront, overlooking the GHYC docks and a spacious lawn, the Clubhouse offers its members an inviting and comfortable gathering place complete with exceptional dining, incredible views and a vibrant social scene.

GHYC affords club members abundant deep water access and stunning views - all within walking distance of downtown Nantucket. GHYC's exceptional waterfront amenities range from sailing at the Jobson Sailing Center to kayaking and fishing off Nantucket Sound. GHYC partnered with Grey Lady Marine to provide complete marina services to members and the public. Club members also enjoy GHYC's state-of-the-art recreational facilities, including the GHYC Tennis & Swim Center and The Sports Barn, featuring a fitness center and spa services.

The organization which was to become the Nantucket Yacht Club was first chartered in 1890 as the Nantucket Athletic Club. By the summer of 1906 a second group had come together, calling themselves the Nantucket Yacht  Club, whose purpose was to provide sailing and racing for the summer residents of Nantucket, their families and friends. The leadership and membership have been able to hold a steady course – no easy matter with a seasonal operation – making changes as conditions have required and proving that yacht racing and sailing, tennis and social activity can all be kept lively and popular. The next hundred years will be exciting and are full of great promise.

NANTUCKET YACHT CLUB BECOMES NSHOF FOUNDING MEMBER

Every year the beautiful island village of Nantucket sponsors Nantucket Race Week, and every Race Week is a fun and exciting event for the entire family. 2009 was no exception. Here is Gary Jobson’s colorful report, with highlights including the IOD Celebrity Regatta and the Parade of Rainbows (known as Beetlecats everywhere else).

IT WAS A NEW ERA, a new century – and a new sailing tradition was about to begin.

Into a burgeoning summer scene, the Nantucket Yacht Club was born in the summer of 1906, when sailing enthusiasts led by H. Holton Wood assembled their boats off Brant Point and held organized races in Nantucket Sound. They met in houses built on Hulbert Avenue in 1900 by Henry Oliver Underwood, and had use of a nearby pier, complete with gazebo, owned by the neighboring Atkins Family.  Although still in its infancy, the new club acted as though it had been established for years. The first flag officers were H. Holton Wood, commodore; J.E.T. Rutter, vice commodore; Alice Underwood, secretary-treasurer; and Margaret Underwood, fleet captain. In mid-September, the yacht club held its first Commodore’s Cup Race to close the season. The new club was here to stay. Like no other instuition of Nantucket, it is a place where traditions are honored, where the past is respected, and where families are celebrated – its history intertwined with that of the island it calls home.
