Katabatic – the beautiful Dufour 450

Anton at Salty Dog Yacht Charter has looked after myself and crew on several occasions, in fact we are on our sixth charter in less than two years! I think that alone speaks for itself. We have both cruised on Antara and raced -finishing in the top 200 in this years Round The Island Race. She is great to sail and well equipped. Katabatic - the beautiful Dufour 450 is amazing in so many ways - easy to sail, very fast and beautifully equipped, a real head turner. See you in August Anton

Antara and Katabatic

Salty Dog is our number one choice

We chartered with Salty Dog twice in 2013 and have already booked three charters this year. Salty Dog have been extremely helpful in making our weekends so memorable. We've had the chance to charter both Antara and Katabatic, and they have both been great fun to sail. Despite the much larger length, Katabatic is easy to manoeuvre in port and quick when sailing......and the looks you receive when entering a marina are just awesome! Being located in Gosport, at the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour, Salty Dog is in a prime position to charter from. So when we need to get away from the rat-race for a weekend Salty Dog is our number one choice.

One of the best

I have been meaning to write - we had a fantastic day on the water, and were very impressed with Antara, both in terms of level of equipment and condition. My father commented that it was one of the best maintained and equipped charter boats he had been on - I have had a few decades less charter experience , but would agree. Many thanks again and we look forward to sailing on her again in the future.

She’s a really nice yacht…

Anton, she’s a really nice yacht, really nice, and we had a super time. Thank you.

Katabatic - Round The Island Race

The most amazing day…

Our family charted the beautiful Katabatic as an 80th birthday treat for my father. There were 8 of us in total and we all had the most amazing day; Anton went to so much trouble to ensure that our every need was catered for and he laid on the most delicious lunch (including bubbles!). My father thoroughly enjoyed being at the helm again after many years and even my 10 year old daughter had a go at ’steering’. Thanks again Anton - we’ll definitely be back

Antara is comfortable and easy to sail…

My brother and I chartered Antara last summer for a week’s sailing in the Solent. Great service and support from Anton. Antara is comfortable and easy to sail, well equipped and well maintained. We had a great week!

Salty Dog Description

Lounging around on the flybridge a few steps removed from the helm station on a breezy afternoon in the Virgin Islands is pretty darned enjoyable. In fact so is strolling about the boat and taking in the expansive views from numerous vantage points. On this boat, the great outdoors literally pour into the saloon and sleeping cabins thanks to the wall of glass and overhead skylight that spans the saloon. It offers four queen berths all en-suite bathrooms.

MEET YOUR CREW: CAPTAIN: Gordon Holden Chef: Jenine De Kock Meet Gordon Holden, your Captain on Salty Dog! He is 28 from Buffalo NY and has been around the water his whole life. He grew up on the shores of Lake Erie sailing/swimming/waterskiing with family and friends in addition to spending summers at Lake Muskoka in Ontario Canada doing much of the same. His family owns a C&C 33ft sailboat on Lake Erie that he and his 3 brothers learned to sail from an early age. In addition to sailing, he was the captain of my high school swimming and diving team as well as the local rugby club. He has always had a passion for the water and has sailed in a variety of locations across the globe. During summer breaks in college, he worked in high end hospitality establishments in East Hampton & Montauk NY and enjoyed providing unique experiences to guests. A few years after graduating college with a Business Administration & History Degree, he worked in Corporate for some time and decided to leave his desk behind and hit the water full time! Gordon went on to obtained his captain and sailing credentials, spent a season working flotilla charters in the Mediterranean, mainly Croatia and Greece, and has spent the last season captaining term charters in the Virgin Islands. Jenine is a culinary trained chef from Cape Town, South Africa. After completing her Bachelor of Commerce Degree and subsequently working 4 years in corporate retail, she left Cape Town for a brief traveling sabbatical and never looked back to “conventional” life again. She was an avid traveler in her 20’s and after spending 6 months in India she decided yet again to make a major change and seek work on superyachts. Although she initially joined superyachts to continue her nomadic lifestyle; a deep love for being on the water, and expressing herself creatively through food, is what kept her there. After 5 seasons on superyachts, Jenine transitioned to catamarans where she can have a more hands on experience with both guests and sailing alike. She is a passionate sailor, holding a yacht masters license and loves any activities to do with water, especially scuba diving. Jenine is very social, loves water sports and exploring new, undiscovered places. Gordon and Jenine look forward to hosting you on Salty Dog and creating wonderful memories for you.

We had a wonderful experience with Gordon and Jenine. This trip was a surprise honeymoon for my husband and I, from his best man. We started in St. Thomas and made our way to Caneel Bay where we jumped in the ocean and ate a lovely dinner at Zozo´s. The next day we left St. John and headed to Tortola for customs and on to Norman Island. We snorkeled the Indians, jumped off Willy T´s and spent the night. Before sailing to Coopers, we got to explore The Caves and the next stop was The Baths (one of my favorites) This has been one of the best trips of our lives and we´re so grateful to be with such a great group!

Sad to Leave

Joe and Ashley got married on St John earlier in the week and we celebrated their wedding gift on Salty Dog for 5 days. We were so blessed to have such an amazing time with Gordon and Jenine. Amazing captain cocktail hour and Jenine´s fabulous meals. They really were great company and made every minute enjoyable. Very sad to have to leave but we will be coming back to sail with Gordon and Jenine on Salty Dog to finish seeing teh rest of the islands. Such an incredible once in a lifetime experience. Best family trip ever!!!

Never Stay At A Resort Again!

What a FANTASTIC week in paradise! We covered a lot of ground and had so many favorites along the way. The kids especially enjoyed snorkeling, tubing with Gordon. The Pirate Show conch blowing contest and the fun limbo, dance night at Potter By The Sea in Anegada. It is hard for 15 and 14 year olds to be impressed and I am certain they had a great time! Personal favs of the week for me were the beautiful beaches, snorkeling and finding live conch shells and the green helmet shell I found (only took pics ;), the stunning sunsets, Jenine´s UNBELIEVABLE food all week and Gordon´s cocktails - his painkiller was the best we had all week - sorry Soggy Dollar! George enjoyed the abundance of activities available and asking lots of questions (Ha!Ha!) We have never done a trip like this before and we are now officially spoiled. My husband will never stay in another resort again. Gordon and Jenine, thank you, thank you, thank you for making this week one of my Top 5 favorite vacations ever. We were catered to but appreciated the opportunity to ´help out´ with the mooring balls etc. Sad to see this week end but we will definitely be back.

Sun Shining - Breezy -Delish

The sun was shining. The wind was breezy. The food was delish. Thank you so much Jenine and Gordon for this amazing trip and the memories I will forever have!

We Love The BVI´s

What an amazing spring break trip. Out two families could not have asked for a better week. We started in St. Thomas and made our way around the BVI´s. Thank you Captain Gordon and Chef Jenine fo an amazing experience. The food was incredible and everything was planned out perfectly. We hope to be back sooner than later. We love the BVI´s - the beautiful scenery, the hospitality and the fun!

A Balance of Relaxation and Adventure

We could not have asked for 2 better weeks aboard the beautiful Salty Dog! From perfect weather to the smooth sailing and unbelievable food. I wouldn´t change a thing, well, maybe I´d add on a couple of nights but that´s it!! I´ve waited nearly 25 years since my last trip and it was a dream to sail the BVI´s again...with my family! Gordon and Jenine, you delivered a perfect trip, a balance of relaxation and adventure. Our girls will never forget it. So very grateful!

Blew Away Our Expectations

My family plus 2 friends just spent a week in the BVI on Salty Dog. We were all looking forward to the week but the week itself blew away our expectations. This was by far our best vacation ever! It´s almost impossible not to have a beautiful vacation int he VI, but the siling experience made our vacation exponentially better.....this is largely in part because of the hard work and hospitality of Gordon and Jenine. It is a huge responsibility to care for 7 people. Gordon and Jenine know all the best stops for us to visit. They were great with our kids (22,19,18,14,13) All of their recommendations were excellent. Their polite and easy personalities made out trip so much more enjoyable. The food was excellent - I was shocked at everything my picky youngest ate. Each table escape was elegant and charming. We would hands-down recommend Salty Dog and in particular it´s crew to any one!

Will Never Regret It!!

We could not have had a better week aboard the Salty Dog! We made memories that will last a lifetime. Gordon and Jenine made our family, spanning ages 6-64 feel extremely comfortable and pampered all week. The food was amazing, the service was amazing, the boat was amazing, the sights/excursions were amazing, and the company we shared was amazing. Gordon and Jenine quickly became extended family members which made saying goodbye more difficult. If you are on the fence about booking this trip, don´t be! You will not regret it!

Knocked It Out Of The Park

Thank you Gordon and Jenine for a perfect Virgin Islands getaway. Besides arranging for perfect weather so that we could experience 100 degree F increase in temperature upon arrival in STT, you knocked it out of the park with kind hospitality, conversations, spectacular meals and yummy cocktails. We were all craving a week of sun, aqua water, beautiful coral and fish, yum food, relaxation and new adventures. We got it all and can´t thank you enough.

Fantastic Hosts!

Gordon and Jenine are fantastic hosts. We were blessed with beautiful weather, the sun, kind service of our hosts. We are spoiled and it will be hard to find any restaurant to compare with the food (and food presentation) we were fed - this in every meal. Thank you

You Are the BEST!

Another truly amazing trip with an AMAZING crew. Gordon and Jenine - You are the BEST. Thanks for letting us celebrate Gordon´s birthday with you. Food was great. we´re going home to FAT CAMP :)) We will miss you. You´re part of the family.

So Impressive!

From the start to the finish this trip was truly AMAZING. Getting to see so many new and beautiful places. I can´t really pick which one was my favorite. The crew was so impressive. Just want to thank them for their willingness to help us with whatever we needed.

Good Care Of Us

What a fantastic experience - again!! The itinerary was so much fun this time as we got to go to The Baths! Thanks to the crew on Salty Dog for taking good care of us.

Loads Of Fun

I had a great time. This trip was loads of fun and great food. I enjoyed The Baths and the snorkeling. Thanks so much for everything. Great trip and great crew. Hope to come back again sometime.

The Crews Intergrity, Ease and Grace!

We truly had a wonderful time! Thanks to the care of Jenine and Gordon. We wait all year long to come and visit the islands and hope it´s as magical as we remember, and having a team like Gordon and Jenine is a gift!!! They helped us create new memories by offering great ideas and suggestions for little adventures. I loved the champagne on the beach and the snorkeling adventure of Great Dog with the water scooters. But most of all I could feel the genuine care they put into making the entire experience special for us - Thank you. Jenine, the flowers, the incredible meals, great conversations, your integrity shines through in all you do!! - Thank you And Captain Gordon, your confidence and skill managing the eacht, and care of us was wonderful and done with ease and grace - Thank you

Gordon and Jenine were Amazing!

We had a lovely 4 night trip up the Drake Channel from St. Thomas to Virgin Gorda. Captain Gordon and Chef Jenine were amazing!! We hit all our favorite snorkel spots along the way - Caneel Bay, Waterlemon Cay, The Indians, Peter, Great Dog and Eustacia, and we even got to play with the water toys. We loved the underwater scooter. Thank you Captain Gordon and Jenine for the suggestion!!!! The food was first rate! Jenine is an amazing chef and we felt like we ate like gourmands every day! Thank you sincerely for a great trip, and we hope to be back with you in the future.

Broker Review

Guest´s email to broker post charter. ´Would love to do a follow up call this next week! It will go without saying but honestly I do not think our trip could have been any better! Salty Dog was amazing and Gordon and Jenine truly went above and beyond and everything they did was perfect! They were freaking amazing!!! ´

Thanks For Being Amazing!

Trip of a Lifetime for sure. We were so blessed to have the opportunity to spend 7 nights aboard Salty Dog! Jenine and Gordon were great and by the end of the week we felt like we were all on vacation together. The meals were phenomenal and the hospitality was endless. We definitely will cross paths again and hope to be back on the Salty Dog real soon!! Thanks for being amazing!

Will Never Forget Our Trip.

As we near the end of our one week journey, it´s difficult to say what we´ve enjoyed most. I suppose for us we will miss the friends we´ve made first. Gordon and Jenine have done a fantastic job of welcoming us and providing outstanding service as captain and chef/first mate. Our food has been incredible and we´ve been spoiled by the quality, care and presentation for each meal. I could have never imagined a vacation like this was even an option. The islands and sea are beautiful and every day was different and offered a new adventure. We were able to relax or enjoy as much activity as we wanted. On our final night our farewell party was filled with laughter by people who loved and cared for each other. We will never forget our trip on Salty Dog :)

Salty Dog Was Amazing!

Wow!! From start to finish our trip on the Salty Dog was amazing. Our trip with guests spanning 3 generations had something for everyone - one favorite was seeing turtles in Maho Bay and everyone enjoyed snorkeling with the colorful fish. Waterlemon, Salt Pond and Lameshur were beautiful and secluded and the hikes had great views! A true highlight was meeting our Captain , Gordon, and chef, Jenine! We so appreciated their companionship and conversation as well as guidance, kindness and humour.

Fun, Wonderful Times

Gordon and Jenine made our very first boating/sailing experience beyond anything we could have ever imagined. So gracious, friendly, accommodating. So patient with our learning to snorkel and with our few physical limitations. Always suggesting alternatives so that we would enjoy the full experience of the week. Fabulous food, great conversation, lovely table settings and each meal was a particularly pleasant and delightful touch. Blessed to have shared all this with our daughter-in-law and grandchildren. memories for a lifetime. Fun wonderful times.

Description :

The First 40.7 has been one of the most popular production racing yachts, and yet remains a very effective fast cruiser.

The Beneteau First 40.7 was designed for Beneteau by Bruce Farr, and introduced in 1997/8. Production continued until 2008 with only minor changes such as interior trim and engine model.

Over 700 of these yachts are afloat, and they have won many major events, including overall winner of the Sydney-Hobart race in both IMS and IRC divisions. Despite this they also make a good and fast cruising yacht.

Abraxas herself has sailed the ARC and been raced by her owner.  She is in excellant condition and recently had her keel re bonded.

WHAT CLIENTS SAY

This is truly a 5 * service. The team really looked after us both ashore on arrival and also while at sea. We were a relatively inexperienced crew but always felt the team ashore had our backs. Thoroughly recommended.

I just wanted to say Thank-you very much for the weekend charter. It was exactly what we were after (albeit cold!) plus Andy was an awesome teacher and great company. We’ll definitely be keen to book again soon!

We had a fabulous four days. Marina is ideally placed for the Solent, boat was in great condition, well equipped and a joy to sail. We were well briefed and the shore side team including the dog very friendly.

We charted one of the sailing yachts for a fantastic weekend cruise in the Solent. The boat was in superb condition and well equipped, the staff was very helpful explaining how things work on the yacht and there was also a video available with all the important information. 10/10 would recommend!

Had a fantastic week chartering Blue Otter, Alex was incredibly helpful and sent loads of information and date checking prior to booking. There was a handover video and both the handover and return were really smooth. The boat was lovely and well maintained and Lee was really helpful in recommending places to visit (and helping identify the steering issue as an autopilot takeover - doh!). Definitely will be back and would fully recommend!

Just back from a lovely week in the Solent. Great service from HPYC from first inquiry through to return handover. Very straightforward to deal with, and the yacht was in excellent condition. We've chartered from many companies in the UK and abroad and the attention to detail (and flawless inventory!) was second to none. Everything about the yacht and equipment had clearly been well looked after and was in immaculate condition. Great service, will use again.

Always very friendly service, and well-maintained yachts. Easy check-in and checkout. Will be back...

We had a great time and were very happy with everything. Your team were genuinely friendly and were very helpful when we needed it. Is a big contrast to many charter companies I have dealt with in the past.

Watching the sun go down with a glass of bubbly on the deck of a sparkling yacht was unbelievable. What a treat, and a much needed change of scenery in these troubled times. We will be back for sure

Fab service, nothing too much trouble, including my daft questions. I'll be a repeat customer for sure!

We had a great time sailing with Lee for a few days at the beginning of September. Hamble Point Yacht Charters supplied us an impeccable 45 ft Hanse yacht, which was handled with complete mastery by Captain Lee. It was a privilege to sail with Lee, who is clearly a highly skilled professional taking great pride in his work ... but who is also a fantastic character with a great sense of humour and plenty of fun stories to keep the whole family entertained. He balances the serious side of safety and learning about sailing with a whopping dose of amusement and good cheer. We sailed the Solent in some decent seas, visited Bucklers Hard on the banks of the Beaulieu River and learned lots about British nautical history. Our boys started somewhat of a fishing trend catching bass off the back of the boat in Portsmouth and we would love to sail with Lee again in the future. The man truly knows his stuff, maintained the boat impeccably and went to every effort to ensure that we had a great time. Many thanks to “Shippers” and Hamble Point Charters. We’ll be back.

Chartered bareboats with HPYC on numerous occasions most recently in Sept 2020. Always helpful and accommodating. Highly recommend.

We had a fantastic weekend sailing on Loxley B. Boat in super condition and spotlessly clean, Alex. and the team very thorough and always on hand to answer any questions. A great experience. We will be back. Thank you!

Lots of information from office with a friendly service. We selected a one of the cheaper yachts and was please with find everything work and was cleaned and tidy. We will definitely be back

This was the first time we had tried chartering and as experienced racing sailors we didn't know what to expect. Covid has closed down all our events this year so this was a chance to get afloat at least once in 2020. What a great experience and Alex and all the Hamble staff could not have been more friendly or helpful. We had a great three days and we will be back !! We would have no hesitation is recommending Hamble Point Yacht Charters.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

solent yacht charter salty dog

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

solent yacht charter salty dog

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

solent yacht charter salty dog

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

solent yacht charter salty dog

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

solent yacht charter salty dog

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.
