THE RMYC: A COLOURFUL AND EXCITING HISTORY

The Royal Motor Yacht Club Broken Bay is not only a Club of distinction, but a Club with a rich history of growth and significance in the Pittwater region.  Originally the Club was formed as a branch of the Motor Yacht Club of NSW Rose Bay, which was purchased early in 1927 in Horseshoe Cove, Newport (still the existing site).

wharf

His Majesty King George V conferred the right for the Motor Yacht of NSW Rose Bay, to use the prefix “Royal”. Subsequently the Broken Bay branch became the Royal Motor Yacht Club. The official opening of our first clubhouse, boat shed, wharf and slipway took place on 17th March 1928. The original clubhouse was built close to the seawall and was enjoyed for many years by members and the local boating fraternity. However, a fire brought forth new ideas and planning. In their re-thinking, Club executives decided the second clubhouse should be built further back, thus allowing cars to be parked between the seawall and the building alignment. In 1939 the land on the eastern side was bought for $200, thereby increasing the overall waterfrontage to approximately 500 feet. In 1942 with Australia heavily involved in the Pacific War, pleasure boating was curtailed because of petrol rationing. Many of the sizeable cruisers were confiscated for the Navy and saw service with the Naval Auxiliary Patrol. In 1947/48, the RMYC Broken Bay, like so many other organisations was “taking stock” after the War years. Progress was paramount and the Club was on the move again. Building and improvements continued gradually. On 15th March 1959, the swimming pool was opened and membership had grown to 354 active members. The Club was fast becoming known as the “family Club” where members could relax, swim and boat with family and friends. The RMYC Broken Bay was now one of the outstanding landmarks on Pittwater. A new lounge deck and bar was constructed and opened in 1964, which extended the clubhouse further. 1966 was perhaps the beginning of many mammoth constructions. Commodore Alan Leslie (Life Member 1970) could see only future growth and development for the Club and many successful projects were undertaken during his four years of leadership. The building of a new clubhouse started in April 1966 and was built around the old clubhouse, thus preserving the past with its fond memories. The official opening took place on 17th August 1968 and was performed by Lady Cutler, the wife of Patron and NSW State Governor, Sir Roden Cutler.

official opening

Boating activity was steadily increasing in New South Wales, particularly in Sydney. The demand for cruisers, runabouts and sailboats was astronomical, as was the demand for marina berths, dry storage and moorings. The southern marina with 91 berths was built in 1966. In July 1978, the first pile was driven for the western marina with 103 berths. Through the mid to late 1980’s, additional parking was created and the entrance road re-routed to allow construction of the Garden Forecourt and BBQ area. The 1990’s saw many improvements to Club facilities. A Club Divisional boat was purchased, the Club lounge balcony with its magnificient views was built and the Garden Forecourt was refurbished with a new BBQ and retractable awning. The fuel wharf adjoining the car park was rebuilt, along with the installation of attractive planter boxes, stainless steel handrails, game fishing weigh station, stainless steel flag pole and relocating the Starters’ Tower.

clubhouse

On the 8th October 2000, a fire caused extensive water and smoke damage throughout the clubhouse. A $1 million refurbishment program saw a new lounge bar with other areas of the Club being replaced as original. In 2001, the new Garden Bar and Brasserie was opened, complementing the modern, all-weather design of the Garden Forecourt. With a major marina development completed in 2004, the Club now provides 218 marina pens and 49 swing moorings. Currently there are plans for another marina upgrade with 40 new marina berths to be added.

Royal Motor Yacht Club Broken Bay continues to evolve to meet the ever changing needs of its members and guests.

Why We Didn’t Fall in Love with Cruising Pittwater

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS. PLEASE READ OUR DISCLOSURE FOR MORE INFO.

Last Updated on November 18, 2019 by Amy

After our celebration day in Sydney we took off into the Tasman Sea. David’s family wanted to get some real sailing in with us, so we made the day trip to go cruising in Pittwater.

Table of Contents - Click to Jump

Pittwater Geography

The Pittwater area is located just an hour north if Sydney. While the whole area is commonly referred to as Pittwater, there are actually multiple waterways. The NSW government breaks them down into:

  • Brisbane Waters
  • Hawkesbury River

Royal Motor Yacht Club

Julie only had two more nights with us, so for ease of access we docked at the Royal Motor Yacht Club. It was nice to get the opportunity to show off my parallel parking skills to my in-laws. The RMYC is located in Broken Bay, north of the main town of Newport in the arm called Pittwater. As far as I can see, there are no courtesy mooring balls in the area and only one anchorage – Palm Beach (see below).

With one day left, Julie wanted to hit a real Aussie beach. We ubered up to Palm Beach, just off of Barrenjoy Head. The east side has a very extensive beach. The sand is an amazing red color, and the beach is big enough that even in a summer day it wasn’t too crowded.

Next, we walked across to the west side of the peninsula, to the beach in the bay side. This is much more of a lake front. The seabed is full of sea grass and is kind if silty. Not beautiful like the east side. Julie and I rented water toys (kayak for Julie, paddle board for me) and paddled around the anchorage.

The RMYC has a shuttle that operates daily around the area. We also had an excellent casual meal at Salt Cove, located in the yacht club.

A great activity that we missed was walking out to the Barrenjoy Lighthouse.

Cowan Creek

After Julie left us, we fueled up and departed for Cowan Creek. It’s peak season here in Pittwater. Boats that came to Sydney for New Year’s Eve are starting to head north (either home or cruising the coast).

Our first stop was Refuge Bay, where we picked up a pink courtesy mooring ball. I had a really hard time finding information about cruising Pittwater and the mooring ball locations in the area, but as we pulled in, our chart had a handy note on it that said Refuge Bay was the last spot of courtesy moorings by the NSW Marine services. Further inland, the courtesy moorings are provided by parks services and are yellow (which is also the same color as the private moorings throughout the region). We were told by several sources that we can pick up a private mooring, as long as we stay near the boat. If the user of the mooring comes by, they will ask us to move in their friendly Aussie way. We were thankful that one of the courtesy mooring was free – much easier.

Packed Bays

On Google maps, there are about 7 boats between America Bay and Refuge Bay. Well, with it being peak season there were probably a hundred boats in this area. It was packed!

Lots of Jellyfish

We were very disappointed to find that the bay was full of massive stinging jellyfish called blubber jellyfish. A few people were still swimming, but we said no thanks.

Missing Waterfall

We took little Dipper up Refuge Bay and walked the Creek at low tide. We saw all kinds of interesting rock formations, stingrays, and the egg sac of a sand snail. We’d heard about a waterfall, but perhaps it was too dry, we couldn’t find it. The beach at Refuge Bay is small and very popular.

In not-so-fun stuff, I broke our washer! Actually, I just clogged the drain. We thought it was shells that I accidentally left in my pocket, but it turns out it was a dryer sheet.  David had to slog through troubleshooting, but he figured it out!

Looking Glass Bay and Cottage Point

After one night we moved to Looking Glass Bay, across from the Cottage Point Inn and Restaurant. There are two of the parks courtesy moorings off the inn, but they were occupied. We stayed one night in the very deep bay, running our aircons through a record heat wave , and the next morning we picked up and moved over to the courtesy mooring.

We called and snagged the last lunch table at Cottage Point and had an incredibly memorable meal. It’s expensive, with a set menu and lunch only except for Friday and Saturday. The food was so very good and incredibly artistic. The view was stunning, and our entertainment was watching the boaters come into the dock at the restaurant. I’d guess that 90% of their business came by boat. Two mega yachts anchored off and dinghied their parties to shore. Eventually, boats double parked on the dock.

After lunch, Brian and I walked up and I’ve Cottage Point to the general store, which had a small frozen meat selection, and other general foodstuffs. It felt good to walk off (part of) our big meal.

A southerly was coming to the area, so we prepared for our next jump up the coast. We spent a few hours anchored off Patonga to pick up a special delivery (yay!) and check out the town. Very cute.

David’s parents decided to spend an extra night in Sydney instead of making the jump with us, so we dropped anchor in 7′ of seagrass off of Palm Beach. The only good thing about the anchorage is the proximity to the mouth and the dock access at The Boathouse Restaurant. The bad part – a wicked storm rolled in and despite having what would be sufficient rode out (7 to 1), we dragged for the first time. It took a few tries to get the anchor back and solid, including having the clean the anchor of seagrass. We ended up putting over 100 feet of chain out before we were satisfied. Thankfully most of the rain missed us, and we ended the evening with a glorious sunset.

Overall Thoughts about Cruising Pittwater

Firstly, some of our Aussie friends oversold Pittwater. We didn’t love it like our friends said we would. The feel of Pittwater is boating, fishing, and drinking. We can do all these things in much prettier places. The jellyfish limited our activities because we love to swim!  I would have liked to see some hiking trails, and I don’t think we did enough exploring to really do it justice.  And it was just way too packed.  We are not fans of the crowds.

To make your holiday better, enjoy Pittwater outside of the peak season – summer.  See the link below for Viki’s experience in Pittwater – much different from ours!

My friend Viki of Astrolabe Sailing chartered a boat in Pittwater and had a lovely vacation.

Here’s a link to the government mooring maps, but it’s more for private mooring fields .

There is a Cruising Broken Bay Guide (we did not use it).

Here’s a map that actually shows where the courtesy moorings are in Cowans and Nareabeen

I’ve been swimming, waterskiing and boating on Pittwater and The Hawkesbury my whole life and I’ve never been stung by one of those jellyfish. They don’t sting. Surely if you come to Sydney on the biggest wknd of the year you would expect anywhere to be busy. Come any other week and you will be all on your own in any one of the beautiful secluded bays. The waterfall in Refuge Bay never stops. It’s right in the middle of the beach, you can’t miss it.

We have just started boating in the area and have gone as far as Refuge Bay from our berth at Empire Marina bobbin head. We would love to venture further to Patonga. Do you have any tips on that journey from refuge to Patonga and the moorings available? We have a 38ft sports cruiser. Thank you!!

Hi! That sounds like a great trip! It’s been a while but I think we anchored for the day off Patonga Beach. It does appear that there are some mooring balls up in the creek, here’s a map: https://www.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=bb82273e94d348a48437c52500960af7

other than that I don’t have much info-certainly not anything up to date since it’s been a while for us.

Have a great time!

You were there in the Summer Holidays sadly. It gets way too packed. We’re heading up there for a few days but mid week.

Even though I live in Sydney, I don’t swim here. Too many things that sting and bite!

Yes, it was crazy! Hopefully if we ever go again, it won’t be one of the busiest times of the year!

There are some good places in the area, but we found the crowding too much for us. We’re Queenslanders. We planned on sailing a number of places there only to find a sea of mooring balls. It is a bit of a marine highway, so if you’re used to country roads it isn’t fun. However people who know no different like it. You can of course rent a mooring and take advantage of some superb land touring. Also, if you need anything marine done, there is about everything you could want. PS. If you want to sell your boat there, DBY are the best brokers and handle all the import issues and hassles.

I completely agree.

We visited Pittwater for a week from Jan 18. By the next Monday the crowds have all but gone. Don’t need to stay in Newport, it’s still the suburbs of Sydney. However the Basin opposite Palm Beach is beautiful. We had 8 boats in Rufuge bay. The waterfall is right in the middle over the little beach and was gently trickling, being high summer. The beach and rocks have historical significance being the training and departure point for Z unit and the Krait in ww2. We loved Castle bay, where there are only 4 moorings. We swam every day rarely seeing Jellies in the mooring areas, however we did see them in Pittwater and around the Akuna marina. Whilst we’ve never seen the sights you have, I guess we say, this National Park is virtually right in our biggest city and that’s amazing. As a Melbournian, it is unlike anything we have and a great learning ground for the novice cruiser or sailor.

Glad you enjoyed it! It’s a shame we visited at such a bad time.

Wow those jellies are massive! There were blue bottles at the beach the other day (similar to man o wars), small and I still went in…pittwater is super crowded, but Andy and I typically grab whichever mooring is free and have not seen an owner yet…but we stay near the boat when we do so. I hope you enjoy the rest of your Australia time. I’m jealous of your washing machine.

Yes the jellies were huge!! My washing machine is amazing!

Do blubber.jellies sting? What was the special delivery?

They do sting. Our special delivery was paddle boards!

Pittwater Motor Enthusiasts Association

royal motor yacht club pittwater

Website:  www.pittwatermotorclub.org.au

royal motor yacht club pittwater

The Club encourages the preservation, restoration, maintenance, use and display of historic vehicles and machinery.

Members and guests can attend  Tuesday meetings every second week, held at the Pittwater RSL Club, 82 Mona Vale Rd, Mona Vale, starting at 7.30pm.

Members meet socially in a range of regular events from our Events Calendar. The Club is very proud of its support, via donations, to charitable organisations each year. A Club magazine ' STAY TUNED ' is published online every two months.

Most importantly, the Club encourages members to be active participants, not just joining the Club for the ‘cheap rego.’

The Royal Motor Yacht Club has a Bistro if you want to arrive early for dinner or a light snack, full bar facilities and plenty of off-street parking.

If you would like to become a member please Click  HERE  to view.

This Issue a few insights into another great Pittwater club and organisation. Our thanks to Graeme Smith for his great help in putting this Profile together.

When and why was the Pittwater Motor Enthusiasts Association formed?

PMEA started in 1994 as group of friends of which Bob Radnidge was the leader and Dick Britain his 2IC, all of whom were interested in Motorcycles and automobiles, decided to form a club based in the Manly/Pittwater area to pursue their joint motoring interests.

Bob phoned many people, including still current member David Rundle to garner interest in a first meeting to be held in the Mona Vale Hall opposite the Pittwater Council Chambers. Bob Radnidge worked for the Mona Vale Golf Club as a groundsman.

David Rundle and his wife Diane attended and joined on the first night, Diane was member #9, & David #13 and both are still very active members of the club.

Bob Radnidge was a good-hearted gentleman who could out work & out last any other member. It was his tenacity that allowed the club to grow and blossom into a friendly voluntary association that benefited our community via its donations to various charities, e.g., Prostate cancer, CareFlight, Bear cottage, Maritime Rescue to mention a few.

The nominated clubhouse was the old Girl Guides Hall opposite the tennis courts in Mona Vale It was hot and cold depending on the season, but boy, if the walls could tell a few stories of humour, laughter and fellowship could be told.

What does the Pittwater Motor Enthusiasts Association do?

PMEA is purposely named a Motor Enthusiasts Association. Whilst primarily now know as a club for Cars and Motorcycles, it is open to and embraces people with anything to do with motors. We have members with hundreds of lawn mowers and others who are passionate about stationary engines.

PMEA is as in its name, a club for like minded motor enthusiasts to associate. We meet every two weeks at the Royal Motor Yacht Club in Newport and have a drive/event every two weeks. All events are well patronised by partners of both our male and female members and are wide and varied and listed on the PMEA website. The website is always up to date and allows members to RSVP online and download venue maps and event details…very hi-tech.

  • UNIQUE CAR SHOW - Royal Motor Yacht Club
  • ALL BRITISH DAY – The Kings School
  • ALL FRENCH CAR DAY – Silverwater
  • SHANNONS SYDNEY CLASSIC – Sydney Motorsport Park (Eastern Creek)
  • RYLSTONE CLASSIC – Sydney to Rylstone for Minis

To list just a few

What range of vehicles are represented?

With over 400 members there would be over a 1000 vehicle and motorcycles. The range of marques is vast…. you name it and it is likely someone in the club has got or had it. Mainly classic vehicles over 30 years old.

A popular event are the Sunday morning BBQs at McCarrs Creek (4-5 times a years) which focus on countries e.g., American Vehicle Day, European Vehicle Day etc. These are popular and well patronised events.

Does the Pittwater Motor Enthusiasts Association engage in local events?

In addition to the Unique Car Show at the Royal Motor Yacht Club, PMEA is a regular and major participant in the following:

  • The Northern Beaches Car & Bike Fest at Pittwater Rugby (RAT) Park.
  • The Dee Why Beach Australia Day Car & Bike Show.
  • Machines and Macchiatos at Terry Hills
  • North Shore Sporting Car Club Auto Brunch at St Ives Showground

Is there a social aspect to the Pittwater Motor Enthusiasts Association? – please share examples .

Is there a social aspect!!!!! Is there ever. As noted above there is a huge social aspect to PMEA with fortnightly events and longer weekends away. Covid curtailed a few things in the last few years however we managed a great Southern Highlands 3 day trip in April and have another 3 day trip to the Orange region in the new year.

PMEAs Christmas Party is major annual event held at the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club where we manage to incorporate a car display.

As part of PMEA’S charter, it donates 20% of its subscription fees to local charities with the following groups been this year’s recipients:

  • Mona Vale Girl Guides
  • Men’s Kitchen Northern Beaches
  • Marine Rescue Broken Bay
  • Lifeline Northern Beaches
  • Northern Beaches Community Donation
  • Prostate Cancer Support Group Northern Beaches
  • Belrose Rotary

Whether it is a “leisurely drive out to West Head, a coffee drive to Akuna Bay or Palm Beach, breakfast at North Head or our favourite regular BBQs at McCarrs Creek. Wherever we go we have spectacular scenery, never too crowded, great service by the various establishments we patronise and the interest our cars generate with the local community.

Does the Pittwater Motor Enthusiasts Association have a ‘Motto’ or favourite phrase which it runs under?

Not really official but……RUN ‘EM, DRIVE ‘EM, RIDE ‘EM, DON’T HIDE ‘EM!

Luxury motor yacht Ferretti 530

Luxury yacht Ferretti 530 was very keen to undertake in collaboration once again with AYT – Advanced Yacht Technology, Ferretti Group Engineering Division and Studio Zuccon International Project . The compact dimensions, 16 meters long and almost 5 meters wide, allow the 530 yacht to deliver grand Italian luxury and cruising immersed in such comfort until now unheard of in a yacht of this size.

Ferretti 530 yacht boasts three revolutionary innovations: the full beam master cabin with chaise longue and two large open view windows that make it a real suite at sea level bathed in light, tones and the natural essences of teak. Moving the galley from the center to the aft section creates a unique open space that includes the saloon, galley, cocktail bar and the dining area, the cockpit area continues thanks to the tilting window. The roll bar free sky lounge and the spoiler allow the 530 a sporty appearance combined with elegantly formal lines.

Riva , the iconic Ferretti Group brand, presented a new model at the historical Lake d’Iseo shipyards in July 2011. Featuring elegance and ease of transportation as its distinctive characteristics, Iseo superyacht tender , a 27 foot runabout, is destined to become a must-have for those who love cruising on both lakes and the sea, and, most importantly, design enthusiasts. It is also perfect for anyone wishing to enhance their yacht with an exclusive tender that will never go unnoticed.

Due to its ease of manoeuvrability and size, Iseo yacht tender is also ideal as a tender for large yachts. Innovative and elegant, it can also guarantee comfort in bad weather conditions. Besides the electrohydraulic bimini top, it was also designed with a waterproof, automobile-style soft top which protects those on board against water and the wind during cruising.
