Jeff Bezos’ New Yacht Is Finally Ready to Set Sail

Amazon’s founder has been spotted on Koru, a massive schooner with a design that evokes the golden age of sailing in the early 20th century.

Koru, a very large sailboat with three masts and a dark navy hull, sails on a calm blue sea.

By Kevin Koenig

Just in time for the high season of yachting in the Mediterranean, when multimillion-dollar megayachts descend on ports like Monte Carlo and St. Tropez, Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, has been photographed with his partner Lauren Sánchez on his new boat, Koru, off the coast of Spain.

Mr. Bezos’ vessel is a sailing yacht, a departure from the diesel-powered, floating palaces popular with other billionaires. But it is still massive. At 417 feet, Koru is the world’s largest sailing yacht, according to Boat International , and it cost an estimated $500 million to build, Bloomberg reported . (Parsifal III, the boat featured on Bravo’s reality series “Below Deck Sailing Yacht,” is 177 feet long — less than half the length of Koru — and cost $18 million , according to the website SuperYachtFan.)

A spokesperson for Mr. Bezos did not comment for this article; neither did Oceanco, Koru’s builder. Here is what to know about the boat.

For traditionalists, Koru is refreshing. At a time when yacht design skews outrageous — see the lizardlike, 262-foot Artefact or the otherworldly 463-foot Yas — Koru stands out as a schooner, a sailing vessel with two or more masts. Photos reveal a large sailboat with three masts, an on-deck pool and a voluptuous mermaid on the bow, that bears a resemblance to Ms. Sánchez. But otherwise, the sleek, classic lines suggest the patrician age of yachting in the early 20th century, said Robert B. MacKay, author of “The Golden Age of Newport Yachting: Between the Wars.”

“With the clipper bow and the dark hull and the masts,” Mr. MacKay said, referring to Koru’s concave, pointy forward section, “it reminds me of a boat built in 1930 for J.P. Morgan Jr., Corsair IV. It is almost like a reincarnation. It’s certainly at odds with the stuff the oligarchs are building — those look like bloated Clorox bottles.”

Compared with the world’s very largest motor yachts — built for sheer size and the accompanying bragging rights — Koru could almost be considered quaint. Azzam, one of the world’s largest motor yachts, is nearly 200 feet longer.

The Experience

Koru will be propelled primarily by the wind. “Sailboats are usually greener than most powerboats,” said Don Anderson, a former captain of M5 , the world’s largest single-masted sailboat, at 256 feet. “I’d like to think that Koru will be one of the most ecological yachts out there, with its sails and also with the technology that will be aboard.”

“When you’re on a sailboat, you’re more in touch with the wind and the waves than on a powerboat,” he continued. “You’re more susceptible to the elements, too. But you can leave California, and once you get past the Catalinas you can basically surf downwind all the way to Hawaii. All you need to do is run with the waves.”

Mr. Bezos has been a guest on similar boats, according to Bloomberg: In 2019, he was spotted on Eos , a 305-foot sailing yacht owned by Barry Diller and Diane von Furstenberg.

Bill Tripp, a Connecticut-based naval architect, said the appeal of this type of boat is clear: “When you are on a powerboat, you ask, ‘Are we there yet?’ and on a sailboat, you’re enjoying the ride and the ocean so much that you don’t ask that question.”

Koru will be trailed by Abeona, a 246-foot support vessel. Superyachts often have support vessels following along behind them. These “shadows,” as they are colloquially known, are for the “toys” — the ATVs, supercars, seaplanes, motorcycles, smaller boats, scuba gear, personal submarines and even helicopters that pleasure boaters might bring on a trip. According to its builder, this model of boat can carry these gadgets along with dozens of crew members. (Ms. Sanchez flies helicopters, and the couple was recently photographed taking a helicopter to board Abeona and then Koru.)

Abeona, a motor yacht, will have enough range to follow Koru from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean — a common course for yachts — on a single tank of gas.

The Kerfuffle

Koru set off a controversy last year — before it was even completed — in a face-off with the Dutch city of Rotterdam. The boat was built at Oceanco’s facility in Alblasserdam, the Netherlands, and needed to pass the historic Koningshaven Bridge, known as “De Hef,” in Rotterdam, to undergo testing in the North Sea.

When the city announced it would dismantle the bridge to allow the boat and its mainmast — an estimated 230 feet tall — to pass through unscathed, locals were angry. They planned a protest to throw eggs at the yacht as it cruised by. In the end, the bridge was not taken apart, and the yacht was towed to a different location to have its masts attached.

Koru is Maori for “coil” or “loop” and refers to the unfurling of a fern frond. The koru design is common in traditional Maori art, where it symbolizes new life, growth and peace. Mr. Bezos included a photo of a koru frond in an Instagram post on Jan. 1, 2022.

Brad Stone, who was the first to report on Koru, in his 2021 book “Amazon Unbound: Jeff Bezos and the Invention of a Global Empire,” said the name was “consistent with where we see him today.”

“He is no longer this single-minded tech guy,” Mr. Stone said. “He’s in media and Hollywood and has a new relationship.”

Henry VIII had Thomas Cromwell to order his affairs and Samuel Johnson had James Boswell trailing in his wake. The same is apparently true of superyachts, which now arrive with an assistant carrying the bags.

As Jeff Bezos ’s gigantic sailing schooner was sighted cruising the Mediterranean, beside it appeared the largest support boat ever. Jeff Bezos’ New $500 Million Megayacht Didn’t Have a Helipad So He Bought a Support Yacht

Bezos bought a $75 million support yacht for choppers..

Support yacht Abeona

The rich do wild things with their money because, you know, why not? Jeff Bezos, for example, is worth about $127 billion, according to Forbes , or more than enough to drop $75 million on a support yacht with a helipad for his girlfriend, because his $500 million superyacht doesn’t have one, according to   Luxury Launches .

The man that probably has everything had a problem. Aside from the fact that he wanted the town where his yacht was built   to dismantle a historic bridge to movie it, t his was more of a feature problem. The half-billion dollar, 417-foot-long superyacht he just had constructed came with almost everything except a helipad. This is needed as Bezos’ girlfriend Lauren Sanchez is an avid helicopter pilot. So rather than sending the superyacht back to the shipyards, Bezos does what any billionaire with too much money would do, he bought another one .

Support vessel Abeona

The 279-foot vessel is called Abeona and was constructed at a shipyard in The Netherlands. It’s believed to be the largest support vessel in the world. And it’s not just some ship that can carry support vehicles, it’s a full-on vessel, and can carry up to 45 people.

Via Luxury Launches :

Built at an estimated cost of $75 million at the shipyard in Vlissingen, the Netherlands, Abeona was initially known as YS 7512. After completing her sea trials in December, the largest support vessel in the world departed the shipyard in the Netherlands before arriving in Gibraltar, where she is currently located. Longer than many yachts, the 279-footer is a gorgeous ship with a grey hull and an orange stripe for a strawberry mark. The boat that looks more like the baby of Sailing Yacht A is named after the goddess of voyages and departures. In addition to a helipad its has a hangar that can carry a D14 value helicopter. It can comfortably accomodate 45 people, and can carry a host of toys, including water scooters, sea bobs, and even a submarine.

We’ll have to assume that the support yacht is where the real party is, should you ever find yourself hanging out with Jeff Bezos on his yacht(s). Tell him you’ll be with the submarine.

Luxurylaunches -

This 247 feet long vessel is exclusively built to support Jeff Bezos’ humungous $500 million yacht. It will accommodate a staff of 45 and will carry a helicopter, diving gear, water toys, and everything else the Amazon CEO and his girlfriend need for their voyages.

Hoist up the Jeff B sails.

Amazon honcho Jeff Bezos’ $500 million superyacht Koru, codenamed Y721, is finally seaworthy — spotted in the North Sea after leaving Rotterdam on Feb. 13,  footage posted by the organization Dutch Yachting  shows.

The massive, 417-foot vessel’s test run came months after it was originally set to be delivered to the 59-year-old billionaire.

It requires a 250-foot support vessel that houses a helicopter landing pad for the Blue Origin founder.

Bezos’ mega boat created controversy last year after a report that Dutch officials would  have to dismantle  the historic Koningshaven Bridge because the 130-foot steel structure wouldn’t allow the vessel and its 229-foot masts to pass through.

Following an uproar from residents, local leaders decided the plan was a bridge too far — and the boat was towed from its construction location to another shipyard in a nearby town without its masts,  according to Jalopnik .

The uproar likely played a big part in how and when it would float away.

Citizens of Rotterdam reportedly swore in February that, should Bezos’ superyacht traverse the De Hef bridge, they would pelt it with eggs in protest .

And when it finally came time to move the vessel out of its Dutch shipbuilding yard, the decision was made to tow it away under cover of darkness, the Cut reported.

jeff bezos yacht helicopter

Koru costs about $25 million a year to run. The pleasure boat can accommodate 18 guests — and requires a crew of 40 sailors.

It is far from the world’s most expensive yacht. That dubious honor is reserved for the $4.8 billion History Supreme — a gold- and platinum-plated vessel featuring a Tyrannosaurus rex bone wall made of meteoric stone. It was bought in 2011 by an anonymous Malaysian businessman,  according to the Richest .

Yet the half-billion-dollar price tag is a relative drop in the ocean for the Amazon founder, whose net worth was valued at  $181 billion  by Forbes.

Koru will join a fleet of superyachts , helicopters and planes already owned by the entrepreneur and his millionaire girlfriend, Lauren Sanchez.

The aluminum and steel schooner reportedly boasts three decks, including one with a swimming pool.

The smaller, 250-foot support vessel that will sit alongside the mammoth one will include a helicopter landing pad for Bezos or his celebrity guests. This smaller yacht is also expected to be loaded with an array of toys including luxury cars, jet skis, speedboats, and perhaps even a personal submarine, the Daily Mail has reported .

Lauren Sánchez is showing off her piloting skills.

The fiancée of Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos was seen landing a helicopter on her soon-to-be husband’s yacht on Wednesday in Sardinia, Italy.

An eyewitness said Sánchez made “three or four” attempts at landing on the helipad aboard Bezos’ $100 million support vessel, Abeona, before she was successful.

The ex- journalist — who has been training to become a pilot for over a year and owns an aerial filming company called Black Ops Aviation — eventually grounded the chopper, while cutting a casual figure in a gray tank top, denim shorts and a black baseball cap.

Her businessman beau also opted for a casual ensemble, donning a black tee, black shorts, and a gray cap.

Koru, Bezos’ $500 million superyacht, which features a wooden figurehead that bears a striking resemblance to Sánchez, has been the talk of the town as the pair have been island hopping since May .

Meanwhile, the 246-foot support vessel carries crew as well as what the New York Times described as “toys,” including “ATVs, supercars, seaplanes, motorcycles, smaller boats, scuba gear, personal submarines and even helicopters that pleasure boaters might bring on a trip.”

Sánchez’s landing comes one month after Page Six exclusively revealed that the Amazon CEO  popped the question  to Sánchez with a 20-carat engagement ring after five years of dating.

Bezos, 59, and Sánchez, 53,  hit the star-studded party circuit  in the south of France immediately after getting engaged to celebrate.

Jeff bezos' fiancée lauren sanchez lands billionaires' helicopter on yacht, jeff bezos lauren, take the wheel ... lands his chopper on yacht, 473 6/28/2023 11:07 am pt.

Here's Lauren Sanchez showing off her skills as a helicopter pilot ... touching down in Jeff Bezos ' chopper on a floating landing pad.

Lauren hopped in her billionaire fiancé's helicopter Wednesday off the coast of Sardinia, taking the controls and zipping around before successfully landing on the support yacht for the Amazon founder's superyacht.

Yes, Jeff's new $500 million superyacht , Koru, also has a $100 million support vessel ... it's named Abeona, the Roman goddess of voyages and departures, and it's got a helipad.

It looks like Lauren was practicing takeoff and landings, because she went up and down a few times.

Our sources say Lauren pilots this helicopter often, usually to airports where the couple hops on private jets, and this wasn't her first time landing on Abeona.

Lauren's parents are both pilots and she got her helicopter pilot's license from a flight school in Los Angeles ... she also had her own aviation company and now she's landing choppers on yachts parked off Italian islands.

Before Wednesday's takeoff and landing, we saw Lauren and Jeff returning from land on a souped-up speedboat as they continue their early honeymoon across Europe.

Welcome to life with the filthy rich.

Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos was seen in the French Riviera in his $500million mega yacht at the Cannes Film Festival - which was flagged by his support yacht, which is effectively as a $75million floating garage for his jet skis, luxury cars and his fiancée's helicopter.

The world's most extravagant superyachts have been seen jostling for position at Cote d'Azur, with the likes of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos - the third richest man in the world according to Forbes - being seen gliding into the Cannes' harbour. Bezos has since decided to jet off for northern Italy .

His new yacht the Koru is named after the Maori word for 'new beginnings' and measures a whopping 417ft long.

But the impressive vessel does not travel alone - it is accompanied by a 'support yacht', the Abeona, which measures 246ft, and carries a slew of gadgets, machines and toys for Bezos and his entourage to enjoy.

These include a selection of supercars, motorbikes, smaller boats, jet skis, and a helicopter and landing pad for his fiancée.

The $75million support yacht codenamed YS 6512, which is the largest support vessel ever built, was launched to shadow the Koru in October last year.

Abeona, named after the Roman goddess of outward journeys, was built at a shipyard in Vlissingen, the Netherlands, after a contract was signed with Bezos in 2019, according to Luxurylaunches .

A major reason that Bezos bought the shadow yacht was so that his fiancée Lauren Sanchez, who is a trained helicopter pilot, could land her Airbus ACH-135 when they were at sea - as the bigger Koru does not have its own landing pad, Luxurylaunches  reported.

Sanchez, 53, is the founder of Black Ops Aviation, the first female-owned aerial film and production company.

She became famous as an entertainment reporter in America and as a news anchor, and she won an Emmy award for her stint as an anchor for KCOP's 13 News.

Sanchez was married to businessman Patrick Whitesell from 2005 until their divorce in 2019. She has been with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos since 2019 and they got engaged earlier this month.

Demand for support vessels has risen significantly in the past few years amongst wealthy owners of superyachts.

These yachts are used to assist the main ship by giving space to store equipment (such as a helicopter), and provide accomodation for extra guests.

Abeona has a volume of 1900 tons and has a cruising speed of 16 knots and a top speed of 18 knots. At cruising speed the ships maximum range is 5000 nautical miles.

Alongside all the toys and amenities, the Abeona can accommodate four guests in two staterooms and up to 37 crew members.

It's big sister Koru  is the world's second largest sailing ship, surpassed only by the somewhat underwhelmingly-named 'Sailing Yacht A', owned by Russian fertilizer billionaire Andrey Melnichenko.

The staggering vessel wraps the very best of modern maritime technology with the look and feel of sailing ships of old.

The Koru is powered by a pair of extremely powerful MTU Rolls Royce engines, but also comes complete with an array of sails which allow the craft to harness the power of mother nature.

A polished wooden sculpture of a Roman goddess is carved into the ship's bow, which some have commented looks as though it is styled on Bezos' glamorous girlfriend Lauren Sanchez.

Not much is known about the interior of Bezos' superyacht, but with a price tag of $500 million - and estimated running costs of roughly $25 million - it is sure to be dripping with luxury.

Lauren Sanchez's Son Nikko Gonzalez Is Living A Lavish Life In The Spotlight, Unlike Jeff Bezos' Virtually Unknown Children

  • Jeff Bezos' step-son, Nikko Gonzalez, leads an extravagant life of luxury, showcasing it on social media for all to see.
  • Despite Bezos keeping his children out of the spotlight, Nikko flaunts his lavish lifestyle with images of travel, yachts, and luxury.
  • Nikko's girlfriend, Ginebra, also enjoys a lavish lifestyle, traveling the world and attending events with the famous family.

As one of the richest men in the world, alongside his supposed enemy Elon Musk , Jeff Bezos certainly lives a lavish life. The Amazon owner and absurdly jacked billionaire does his best to keep his lifestyle far away from the public eye. But bits and pieces are released, painting a picture of a man who knows how to enjoy his reported $195.9 billion (as of March, 2024) net worth .

This includes purchasing a $2.5 million engagement ring for his now-fiance Lauren Sanchez. But Sanchez is used to the life of luxury. Both of her ex-husbands have also been exceedingly rich men. But money isn't the only thing they gave her. Sanchez also was given three children from her two previous relationships. This includes Nikko Gonzalez, who is the only one of Sanchez's children to be in the spotlight.

Nikko appears to be used to a life of luxury. Here's what we know about him, his girlfriend, and what he actually does with his life.

While His Ex Wife Keeps Giving Money Away, Jeff Bezos Is Richer Than Elon Musk (Again)

Updated March 2024: In January 2024, Nikko Gonzalez made his runway debut with Dolce & Gabbana. While he did not post his show on social media, his mom, Lauren Sanchez did. Whether this was a one-off for Gonzalez or if he is trying to make a career out of modeling is unknown.

Bezos' children have continued to remain out of the spotlight, as have Sanchez's children with her ex-husband, Evan Whitesell.

What Are Jeff Bezos' Children's Names?

Jeff bezos' oldest child's name is preston, but his younger sons and adopted daughter's name have not been made public.

Jeff Bezos does an exceptional job keeping the identities of his four children private. But when you have the kind of power, money, and influence that he does, it's to be expected. However, given the social media age we now live in, it seems almost impossible. Yet, few news publications have any details on the four children Bezos has with his former wife, MacKenzie Scott , with whom he had a relationship for over 25 years. Of course, Scott appears to be living her best life after her $38.3 billion divorce settlement .

Bezos too has moved on with Lauren Sanchez.

According to Gawker, the only one of Bezos' children who has appeared publicly with him is his eldest, Preston. He is the only one of Bezos' children who has been named in public.

It is believed that Preston may go to MIT or Princeton. As for Bezos' other sons, well, they may appear in a couple of images on both their father's and future step-brother's Instagrams. Although they could be mistaken for Jeff Bezos's nephews from his brother Mark, who also keeps a low profile.

One of their names appears to be George while another could be Dean . However, Gawker claims that 'Dean' is a pseudonym for George who may go to Yale. Jeff Bezos' nephew Owen has appeared in images on Bezos' Instagram and is easily mistaken for his son.

Even less is known about Jeff Bezos' daughter, whom he and MacKenzie Scott reportedly adopted from China . But she is likely to be much younger than her older brothers.

There's An Explanation For Why Jeff Bezos' Kids Are Anonymous (And His Fiance's Son Is All Over Social Media)

Presumably, Jeff Bezos ensures that the media doesn't catch wind of the true identities of his mysterious children to keep them safe from the public . The fact that each of their Instagrams remains private seemingly confirms that his kids also want to maintain anonymity.

Who Is Lauren Sanchez's Son Nikko Gonzalez?

Nikko gonzalez is the son of both lauren sanchez and ex-nfl star, tony gonzalez.

Before getting engaged to one of the richest men in the world, Lauren Sanchez was with Pro Football Hall of Fame's Tony Gonzalez. Very little is known about their relationship except that they had a son together, Nikko.

While Sanchez's son is now in his 20s, she also has two much younger children with talent mogul, Patrick Whitesell.

According to Style , the co-CEO of William Morris Endeavor and the entrepreneur and helicopter pilot were married from 2005 until 2019 . During that time they had two children, Evan Whitesell, who was born in 2006, and Eleanor, who was born in 2008. Once again, little is known about Sanchez's relationship with Whitesell, but, according to Style , it's rumored that Whitesell was actually the one who introduced Sanchez to Bezos .

It's unclear if Whitesell and Sanchez are on positive terms, but it is clear that she and her first husband, Tony Gonzalez have a very positive relationship. Gonzalez has been spotted a few times on double dates with his ex and Jeff Bezos. He's also been invited to various parties thrown by Bezos, including his 2021 New Year's Eve party aboard his yacht in Saint Barts.

In one image from the party, Lauren Sanchez's eldest son Nikko can be spotted with both his NFL legend father and future step-father. This positive bond obviously suggests that Nikko is a fan of his mother's extremely rich man.

Inside Nikko Gonzalez's Extremely Lavish Lifestyle

Nikko gonzalez travels extensively and is a professional model.

While Jeff Bezos' children are extremely private about their lavish lifestyle, his step-son, Nikko, certainly isn't. While Nikko Gonzalez doesn't post a lot on his Instagram, the few images he has reveal a lot about his day-to-day life. This includes an image of him lying shirtless at the bottom of an empty pool on a yacht deck (which is presumably one of Bezos' own mega-yachts).

Nikko's Instagram depicts him as an often-shirtless, rich boy, happy to be enjoying the lavish life that he was brought up with. This includes images of him casually hanging out at fancy restaurants around the world, including in Paris, France, swimming with sharks in Bora Bora, climbing waterfalls in Maui wearing nothing but his underwear, and partying on Jeff Bezos' mega-yacht in Saint Barts.

Nikko also appears to be an avid skier, or, at the very least, a talented one. In a post featuring what looks like his stepbrothers on Jeff Bezos' side, Nikko can be seen jetting down a mountain in Yellowstone Park with the grace and agility of a pro skier.

Lauren Sanchez's Lifestyle Is Outrageously Expensive: Here's The Truth About How Jeff Bezos Spoils His Fiance

Then, of course, there are a handful of images of Nikko Gonzalez's gorgeous girlfriend, Ginebra.

Who Is Nikko Gonzalez's Girlfriend, Ginebra?

It has not been confirmed that genebra is nikko gonzalez's girlfriend but the two are clearly close.

At the time of this writing, we cannot even confirm that Nikko Gonzalez's girlfriend is named Ginebra. But this is what is said on her Instagram (@ginebss). We know very little about this social media influencer. However, according to images on her Instagram, she has been dating Nikko Gonzalez since at least early 2021.

Ginebra appears to have just as lavish of a lifestyle as her boyfriend, traveling around the world with a number of her model friends. Given that she is friends with so many established models such as Kailand O. Morris, Quinn Elin Mora, and Jordan Barrett. According to her Instagram, Ginebra is also friends with Forrest Whitaker's daughter, True.

Nikko's mom, Lauren Sanchez, appears to be a fan of her as she often comments on Ginebra's photos. This includes captions like "Yes, Princess", "Pretty girl", "Birthday Girl, love you", and "Beauty".

Ginebra is also present at some of the parties that Jeff Bezos throws for his family and friends. According to The Daily Mail , she was also spotted out for dinner with Sanchez, Nikko, and Jeff Bezos's eldest son Preston at Nobu in Malibu in April 2023.

So, while little is known about her relationship with Nikko Gonzalez, it appears as though she's enjoying the benefits of his famous family.

Jeff Bezos Is So Rich He Has A $100m ‘Support Yacht’ For His $700m Superyacht

A not-so-humble sidekick.

Jeff Bezos Is So Rich He Has A $100m ‘Support Yacht’ For His $700m Superyacht

Image: SplashNews

This weekend, Jeff Bezos made a remarkable entrance into the harbour of Cannes aboard his new $700m megayacht. Spanning 417 feet, this vessel was accompanied by its support yacht, the Abeona, serving as a $100 million floating garage housing luxury cars, jet skis, and even a helicopter for Bezos’ fiancée.

It’s been a busy few weeks for  Jeff Bezos . Between wearing a  barely-there sheer polo  to the Miami GP, his  controversial $723m yacht  finally being seen  under sail for the first time , and construction pushing ahead for his new wife’s $270m mega-mansion , you’d be forgiven for thinking that the once world’s richest man — recently eclipsed by Bernard  Arnault  and  Elon Musk  — might want to take a few days off to decompress.

And that’s exactly what he’s done: arriving at the bustling Cote d’Azur this weekend, the Amazon founder floated into the harbour for some much-needed ‘me time’. However, what caught the eye of many onlookers was not his controversial but undeniably impressive $700m superyacht, but the rather more modest $100m companion craft that came along with him.

WATCH: Here’s what the main event looks like under sail…

Named after the Maori term for “new beginnings,” Bezos’ controversial superyacht — the Koru —represents a more luxurious and opulent investment than any of us mere mortals could ever dream of. And yet, that hasn’t stopped him from keeping the Abeona — Koru’s 246-foot “ support yacht ” — on hand and stacked with all the toys a billionaire could need.

The largest support vessel ever built, the $100 million Abeona was launched in October of last year and is named after the Roman goddess of outward journeys. Stacked with supercars, motorbikes, smaller boats, and jet skis, the vessel’s raison d’etre is to accommodate Bezos’ fiancée — trained helicopter pilot Lauren Sanchez — as the Koru lacks its own landing pad.

This is far from being the first big spend that Bezos has made to accommodate his new boo, who made her own millions as an esteemed TV presenter and more recently as founder of ‘Black Ops Aviation’, the first female-owned aerial film and production company. Bezos’ $270m mega-mansion that is underway in Beverley Hills is also being developed with the aim of accommodating the soon-to-be-married couple.

jeff bezos yacht helicopter

We certainly don’t wish to imply that Sanchez is a demanding partner. In fact, the demand for similar support vessels is apparently soaring amongst the super-rich, who are always in need of additional space to store gadgets and guests alike. As well as hitting top speeds of 18 knots, the Abeona can comfortably accommodate four guests and an extensive crew of up to 37 members.

Sanchez may not be demanding but she’s certainly inspiring, at least in the eyes of her new beaux: in addition to the Koru’s Rolls Royce engines and array of sails, the ship’s bow features a polished wooden sculpture that, officially speaking, is intended to be reminiscent of a Roman goddess, but some have speculated bears a striking resemblance to Sanchez herself…

While details about the interior of Bezos’ staggering superyacht are as yet undisclosed, it isn’t hard to imagine to the kind of obscene luxury that must lay within its walls. With estimated annual running costs of over $30 million, it’s clear that as the Koru and its not-so-humble sidekick set sail, Bezos knows how to keep his extravagant dreams afloat while the rest of us are left treading water.

Jeff Bezos had a brush with death in a helicopter while starting his rocket company, Blue Origin. Here's what happened.

  • Amazon founder Jeff Bezos was scouting for a large Texas ranch to buy in March 2003.
  • The billionaire wanted a huge parcel of land to test spacecraft for his then-nascent startup Blue Origin.
  • He was scouting properties by helicopter with a cowboy, an attorney, and a pilot named "Cheater."
  • A gust of wind blew the helicopter off-course, causing it to crash. Luckily everyone survived.
  • A new book called " The Space Barons " describes the accident in remarkable detail.

On March 6, 2003, Jeff Bezos wasn't the richest person in the world , and Amazon.com stock sold at prices less than one-fiftieth of its value today.

Yet Bezos, thinking ahead — far, far ahead — was already scouting the deserts of Texas for a place to launch his most prized venture: Blue Origin , a reclusive rocket company he founded in 2000 that may soon give Elon Musk's SpaceX a run for its money .

Bezos was visiting a canyon near Cathedral Mountain, which is located in West Texas roughly 50 miles from the Mexico border.

He wanted to buy a huge, secluded desert ranch to test-fire rocket engines and launch state-of-the-art spacecraft.

However, as Washington Post writer Christian Davenport explains in the first chapter of his new book, " The Space Barons: Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and the Quest to Colonize the Cosmos ," the famous billionaire had a close brush with death during the real-estate scout — then, almost immediately afterward, laughed at the top of his lungs.

How and where Bezos cheated death

Short on time and eager to get back to Amazon, Bezos — against the advice of experienced locals — insisted on looking at parcels of land by air instead of horseback, which might take days instead of hours.

Bezos eventually found himself in the passenger seat of a five-person Aérospatiale Gazelle helicopter with his attorney, a cowboy guide, and pilot Charles Bella.

Related stories

Although nicknamed " Cheater " for the escapades of his drag car-racing days, Bella was best-known for his unwilling role in a 1988 prison break. In that incident, allegedly at gunpoint by an inmate's girlfriend, he landed the same chopper flown in "Rambo III" in a prison in Sante Fe, New Mexico.

Ty Holland, a cowboy and Bezos' backcountry guide, chartered the helicopter that had touched down in the canyon about a mile up. Holland was eager to get moving while the normally gusty mountain weather was calm, but Bezos loitered, writes Davenport.

Everyone eventually re-boarded, and the helicopter took off for the next site.

But according to the National Transportation Safety Board's final report on the accident, posted in July 2003,"the helicopter entered an uncontrolled descent and impacted terrain" and "came to rest in a shallow creek."

The report was a gross understatement of what actually happened.

As Davenport writes, a gust of wind blew the Gazelle toward a tree line, Bella lost control, and the chopper clipped a mound of dirt, toppling it over. The rotor blades snapped off and the chassis rolled and tumbled into Calamity Creek, breaking off the helicopter's tail boom in the process.

The chassis landed upside-down in the creek and partially filled with water.

The aftermath of the accident

Bella, Bezos, and Holland escaped with minor injuries while the attorney, Elizabeth Korrell, suffered a broken vertebrae. (The Smoking Gun has a photo of the crashed Gazelle on its website.)

After everyone was accounted for as alive, Bezos told Holland they should have used horses, then let loose a "weird, full-throttle laugh" that "boomed through the canyon," Davenport writes.

"Avoid helicopters whenever possible," Bezos told Fast Company in 2004 about the accident. "They're not as reliable as fixed-wing aircraft."

Bezos ultimately passed on the property he was inspecting and bought up a 30,000-acre ranch outside of Van Horn, Texas, around 2004.

Today the company is quietly developing a fully -reusable rocket system called New Glenn , which may compete with SpaceX's Falcon Heavy and Big Falcon Rocket systems.

Using interviews with Bezos and others characters, plus a heap of reporting and research, Davenport has reconstructed what is likely the most detailed (and colorful) description of the events and people involved the incident in his book " The Space Barons " — not to mention the larger and heated competition between Bezos, Musk, and others.

Mark Zuckerberg’s $300million ‘birthday present’ mega yacht arrives in US – it even has its own $30m ‘wingman’ boat

FACEBOOK founder Mark Zuckerberg has shown off his wealth at sea, bringing his multimillion-dollar yacht to the United States just weeks before his birthday.

After rumors the billionaire was looking to invest in a yacht began circulating, Zuckerberg was quick to snag a $300 million mega yacht complete with its own $30 million partner boat.

Mark Zuckerberg's $300 million mega yacht arrived in port just weeks before the billionaire's 40th birthday

He was seen in the Netherlands touring Project 1010, a Russian-commissioned mega yacht, in early March.

Due to sanctions involved in importing the vessel to the United States, delivery of Zuckerberg's multimillion-dollar boat was delayed.

It was first spotted in home waters on March 20.

The 387-foot-long vessel docked at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with its chrome finish reflecting a harsh sun.

Project 1010 made its maiden voyage from the Netherlands after receiving special permission to be imported just weeks ahead of Zuckerberg's birthday, which is on May 14, raising questions about whether it could be a gift to mark the occasion.

The mega vessel is not far off the size of Amazon mogul Jeff Bezos' $500 million 417-foot tall mega yacht, Koru, which was spotted in the same state in November 2023.

The Abeona, his mega yacht's support vessel, a 264-foot garage to hold Bezos' luxury cars, private helicopter, and jet skis, was docked at a slip four miles away.

To put into perspective the additional costs Zuckerberg is looking at, Bezos reportedly bankrolled a $16,500 per week bill for Koru to stay at the port, part of the $25 million in annual costs the ship will rack up.

But cost is no object to 39-year-old Zuckerberg, as he was the youngest billionaire to make the top 10 wealthiest people in the world list.

In 2021, Zuckerberg was reportedly worth $108 billion, an amount that rose to $138.4 billion by January 2024.

Zuckerberg is hardly known for conserving his money when faced with large purchases.

In December 2021, it was reported that Zuckerberg was  breaking ground  on an estimated $270 million, 57,000-square-foot Doomsday bunker.

Plans for the structure include filling the football field-sized space with 30 bedrooms, elevators, a swimming pool, sauna, tennis court, and full-sized gym.

EARNING $48,328 - MINUTE BY MINUTE

While a $330 million purchase might sound outlandish to most, especially when coupled with a $270 million bunker, Zuckerberg can make that money back in about two months.

The Meta, formerly Facebook, founder reportedly makes between $6 million and $12 million each day, equating to an estimated yearly earning of more than $3 billion.

In 2018, Zuckerberg earned roughly $1.7 million an hour, according to previous Business Insider calculations.

By 2020, he ranked as the fourth richest person on the planet.

jeff bezos yacht helicopter

Given that Mark Zuckerberg enjoys a respectable 16th place on a list of the world’s richest people, he probably figured it was time for him to acquire one of the ultimate status symbols for the mega-wealthy — a super yacht.

A new report from The Sun said that Zuckerberg is now the proud owner of a $300 million vessel that he has christened “Launchpad.” The 387-foot-long vessel, which comes with a helipad and a $30 million companion boat, was seen docked this week at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with its unique chrome finish reflecting in the sun.

This purchase shows, among other things, that the Facebook and Meta founder and CEO has branched out from buying islands and building an underground complex to help him survive the apocalypse. Perhaps, he wants to cruise the Mediterranean this summer and be among the moguls who can play host to Leonardo DiCaprio.

The yacht definitely grants him admission to the watery playgrounds of such multibillionaires as Jeff Bezos, Larry Ellison, Bill Gates and any of the Russian oligarchs who haven’t been the target of sanctions imposed by the United States or its allies over Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

In fact, Zuckerberg reportedly came by Launchpad due to the misfortunes of one of those oligarchs. The yacht originally was commissioned to be built by Vladimir Potanin, one of Russia’s richest men who is on multiple sanctions list, according to a report by Autoevolution.com , a transportation industry site. The yacht was known as Project 1010, and the shipbuilder in the Netherlands was legally barred from delivering it to Potanin when it was completed in 2022, though Autoevolution also said that Potanin was not the yacht’s actual owner.

The Sun reported that the yacht recently received “special permission” to be imported. It has since arrived in the United States, a couple months ahead of Zuckerberg’s 40th birthday on May 14 — which raises the question of whether he meant Launchpad as a birthday gift to himself.

It’s quite a gift: Launchpad can comfortably fit 24 guests aboard. It also requires a crew of 48 and is said to cost $30 million a year for upkeep and usage, according to Superyachtfan.com . But shelling out $30 million for maintenance a year shouldn’t be a problem for Zuckerberg, who reportedly earns between $6 million and $12 million a day, The Sun said.

But as spectacular as Launchpad sounds, super yacht fans might say it’s not as spectacular as Jeff Bezos’s super yacht, Koru. The $500 million sailing vessel features very tall masts, a swimming pool, a helipad and room for a second, smaller yacht. The most noteworthy thing about Koru is that Bezos commissioned a special sculpture to decorate its prow. It’s a “curvaceous winged goddess” that is said to bear a striking resemblance to his fiancee Lauren Sanchez.

The Amazon founder, his wife-to-be and the goddess figurehead spent much of last summer sailing around the Mediterranean, cruising from Spain to Croatia and hosting such famous guests as Katy Perry, Orlando Bloom and Usher. The couple also threw a lavish engagement party off the coast of Positano on Italy’s Amalfi coast, attended by another pack of famous friends, including Kris Jenner, Wendi Murdoch and, yes, Leonardo DiCaprio.

Keeping Up With the Bezoses: Zuckerberg Buys $300M Superyacht

By Lee Barney    |   Friday, 22 March 2024 10:41 AM EDT

Mark Zuckerberg is now the proud owner of a $300 million, 387-foot-long superyacht he has christened “Launchpad,” The Sun, U.S. edition, reports .

Originally commissioned by Russian oligarch Vladimir Potanin and built in the Netherlands, the yacht can sleep 24 and comes with a helipad and $30 million companion boat, as is customary for yachts of this scale.

Seen docked this week at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Launchpad requires a crew of 48 and costs $30 million a year for upkeep. That should not be a problem for Zuckerberg, the 4 th richest person in the world with a net worth of $180 billion , according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

The Meta Chairman and CEO earns between $6 million and $12 million a day, amounting to more than $3 billion a year, according to Business Insider estimates.

Zuckerberg was seen touring the ship in early March, and the vessel was first spotted in U.S. waters on March 20. Due to sanctions against Potanin, delivery was delayed — but comes just in time for the billionaire’s 40 th birthday on May 14.

By comparison, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, currently ranked as the world’s richest individual with a net worth of $201 billion, has a $500 million, 417-foot tall mega yacht named Koru, that has a swimming pool and helipad. The superyacht’s companion yacht, the Abeona, has a 264-foot garage to house Bezos’ luxury cars, private helicopter and jet skis.

Zuckerberg's new trophy grants him entry into ports frequented by other multibillionaires such as Larry Ellison and Bill Gates, as well as sanctioned Russian oligarchs.

It is not known when or how Zuckerberg acquired the vessel.
