base. People are always friendly and helpful. to me they make you feel like he owner of the boat instead of the charterer.

, and , both times it was a fantastic experience. So much so that the whole does get me thinking about doing the whole ownership program ourselves.

In speaking with their representative this past weekend in Dusseldorf the program that would be of interest to us is the following:

-Pay 55% of the boat cost up front. (let's say for example it's a Lagoon 42, cost $600,000, I write a check for $330k)
-It goes into their charter for roughly 5 years and 6 months.
-We get to use the boat 12 weeks a year (off season, or 6 weeks high season)
-No expenses for us
-No income for us
-At the end of the program they theoretically have maintained the boat to be in good working order and free from defects, and then they give us the keys and we own it 100% outright.

So from my angle, I then take this Lagoon 42 and attempt to sell it after coming out of charter. Let's take a leap of faith and say it sells for $330k, so after brokerage and expenses I get a check back for $300k. The cost to us has been $30k loss on the boat, plus the cost of for 5.5 years on the original down payment. So conservatively say roughly 4% return on the 330K would be $70k net.

We have now spent $100,000 for 5 years of a lot of sailing around the world. If I assume we only used the 6 weeks a year in high season and the boat is $8k week high season cost, we've saved $175,000 in would be chartering expense.

The reason this is kind of appealing to us is that my wife's benefits allow us to fly for free, so the travel expense side of things doesn't come into play for us like it would others. Secondly because of this benefit and our diverse travel interests we find ourselves liking to do tons of other cool stuff like visiting land based stuff as well, like national parks, snowboarding, cool cities, jungles, deserts, mountains, etc.

So from a angle, we'd actually be more likely to spend the entire 12 weeks in low season vs. 6 weeks only in high season. This is a pretty good amount of time on the each year and being able to mix it up with new locations is appealing.

Other the risk of not being able to sell the boat at the end, what am I missing? But considering the expense of actually owning and maintaining your own boat for 3-4 months use a year (and that being the same location year after year) it seems like the idea has merit.

.

We bought a (Dufour 350) with the intention of upgrading to larger boats when we want friends/family to come. This has turned out to be a great decision because the cost to upgrade to 40-42' boats averages about $500 per week, which our guests are happy to pay.

I spent years agonizing about the and comparing programs and charter companies and in the end decided to go with DYC because they have so many more bases than everyone else. We've sailed "our yacht" from our base once and every other charter has been a reciprocal use. We don't know when the next time will be when we go back to "our base" and sail "our yacht". Last fall we spent a couple weeks in and next month we've got a couple weeks in and the Grenadines.

Here's the deal - I haven't thought about the money aspect of the deal since about a week after we wrote the check and signed the papers. Now we just focus on where our next is going to be and we don't have to scrape money (and crew) together to pay for it. Just book the boat and go. The way I explained it to the wife is we're pre-paying for 5 years of chartering at a steep discount and she went for that straightaway.

The best thing about DYC for us is the opportunity to sail so many different locations that we wouldn't go to if we owned our own boat. Our list: , back to , BVIs, , , and then start looking at the bases.

DYC Owner Care has been wonderful for us so far - I have one person (Lya) that I with my destination and dates, she responds back in a day with available boats, and then we finish up the paperwork. Couldn't be easier. Also the staff at the bases we've been to have been great and treat us well as owners.

My only concern about the program is at the end of the contract and how difficult it's going to be to sell our boat. We have no intention of keeping it. Frankly I'm not all that concerned about trying to get the maximum money out of the , so hopefully we'll be able to get rid of it quick and easy.

Conclusion - We've been with DYC for 12 months and are very very happy so far.

"A message from Dream Yacht Charter to its business partners, copied from the company's web site. Note that it says it has the financial resources to succeed through September. Any bets on how the charter business will be doing then?

For the first time in our , we have an almost total suspension of our activity due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Our bases can no longer accommodate customers and, as you will no doubt be experiencing too, sales teams have virtually no more sales requests to process.

My first priority is of course the of my staff, you, as our partners, and that of our customers. Site closures and working allow us to quickly meet this requirement.

The second priority is to ensure the sustainability of our businesses. We have, as I am sure you have, been working tirelessly to guarantee the functioning of our businesses for the coming months so that we can recover quickly after the pandemic restrictions are lifted. loan and you can be confident that .

We know you are all suffering too and our strength with partners has always rested on the ability to mobilize in solidarity, to act quickly and anticipate. This is the vision that I invite you to share, to find these joint solutions to help each other.

While we have cut back our operations and costs to ensure our survival, we remain committed to delivering those charters which guests still intend to take and provide excellent customer . This means, in return, we need to know who is committed to travelling and that they maintain their financial commitment to the booking.

What we can all do together is to help customers feel confident in their bookings, knowing they can reschedule should they be unable to travel due to Coronavirus disruption, and maintain the bookings already in place.

Customers have the following options:

If they are not confident they will be able to travel for the booked date due to Coronavirus disruption, we offer flexible rescheduling. We urge them to reschedule.
If clients still intend to travel on the booked date, subject to the lifting of Coronavirus restrictions, it is important that they maintain their booking in good standing and adhere to the payment terms of their booking. They can be confident that if this situation changes, their money is safe and they can reschedule.

In these times of great uncertainty, we need more than ever to have the most accurate understanding of our clients’ intentions.

A reminder of our policies

Clients sailing this summer can change their dates and/or location in 2020 with no penalty.
Clients booked to sail this season can change to 2021 with a small change fee. Alternatively, this change fee can be avoided if the original payment schedule for pre-change dates is kept to.

The unprecedented event of COVID-19 has become a huge threat to the tourism industry and governments have been quick to react to protect businesses, such as yours and ours. Governments have fast-tracked law changes and we are applying it as soon as it is ratified.

These law changes in some countries mean customers cannot claim a refund during the Coronavirus pandemic period, instead they are allowed the opportunity to reschedule. This has been voted for recently by governments in and Italy, and isn’t far behind. Tour operators can issue a credit note valid for:

Italy – 12 months
– 18 months (all major tourism firms including Air France apply that policy)

We kindly ask you to be firm with your clients and stick to this policy and it is also in your interest too.

We are adjusting our operation daily and we’ll be ready to serve charters as soon as guests are ready to travel to us. Those unable to get to us will be able to reschedule at another time that suits. In return, those clients that have booked with us must maintain their commitment to travel and financial payments according to their booking’s terms so that we can anticipate and plan the resuming of our operations accordingly.

It’s going to be a very difficult time and we thank our partners for their patience and understanding. I hope you and your teams stay safe.

Best regards

- and therefore beefed up where it needs to be.

DYC appears to buy boats based on a "deal" they get from the builders. Then, they spec the boats out with maximum cabins. They strip out "standard" items (based on our experience with the 520 - which is less than 50', BTW). Our boat had ZERO space. None. No place to keep ice. "That's why we drink our warm". Right. They also don't put pictures of the actual boats on their websites. They use the ones from the manufacturer. Which doesn't show the tiny cabins, or the missing , for instance. Based on our experience, I can't imagine what kind of condition the boat would be in after 4-5 years. On our 7-8 month old charter boat, there must have been 2 rolls of duct tape in use.

Then you have companies like Yacht Charters. You buy the boat you want, with their assistance. The last boat we chartered from them was 5 years old. Best boat we've had in 16 charters. Impeccably maintained - at the owner's insistence, I should add. But all of their boats seem to be that way. Their MO is catch the problem before it becomes a real problem. Sail Caribe in PR seems to be the same way.

Again, DYC seems to be more like a car rental company - buy them in bulk, and buy 'em . Car rental companies buy massive numbers of cars, rent them out until they get 15,000 miles on them, and then sell them for more than they paid for them.

Just my opinions, not necessarily the facts. But yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if their management contract prohibits saying bad things about them. And who the hell wants to go to Mauritius to fight a legal battle.

Experience with Dream Yacht Charter (owner & guest)?

  • Add to quote

I am considering a charter management program to finance a boat. Does anyone have experience with Dream Yacht Charter? Two options seem to be interesting for me: Dream easy: 35% upfront + 25% balloon payment -> here the question is if I get at least a partial owner's title on the boat? (for the case of insolvency) Partnership: 55% upfront -> I suppose this one comes with a 1/1 title. I know this is not the king of investments but 40% value loss over 5 years seems realistic, probably this is the cheapest way to manage ~4weeks/year sailing time.

Hello, What are your goals for the boat - charter then sell or take over after? I just returned from a charter with DYC - people were great. Boat was a 2014 - in terrible shape. Mechanically sound and rigging was good but surface wise she was beat up and not taken care of. I have made a formal 'complaint ' with DYC and still waiting for their reply.

I was in the BVIs (3 weeks ago) and I was not the boat owner. A refit for her, based on my standards would be a complete interior renovation of cupboards/appliances/flooring/blinds, wiring and control assessment and replacement, deck refurbishing. Hull was scratched up but acceptable. Nav electronics were useless - kept shutting down. The lines were all different sizes/ material and conditon. I was told to run the generator 6-8 hours a day to keep everything charged and run the A/C - if this was done for the past 3 yrs. then those hours really build up on the 'mechanical' side. So cost could be expensive of for the latter component rebuild or replacement. Charter Company standards for such upkeep will vary I am certain. I have dealt with Horizon Yacht Charters as well and find them good. I am certain that there are others, but I would visit some boat shows and search the net for previous owner assessments of the companies before stepping in. Hope this helps.

Thanks! Owner assessments - especially helping negative feedback is extremely rare to find. Actually for DYC I found some positive feedback so far. I do not mind e.g. if the sails are worn off after 5 years or the engine needs a standard overhaul do to its hours. But groundings (remember Cheeky Rafiki!), hull/helm/rudder damage of any kind, dead electronics is unacceptable. I'd say I'd accept a "complete blue-water refit" budget of <10% of the boat price (that's pretty much done if you replace the sails, batteries & service the engine). As for Horizon: they offer Bavarias for monohull, no thanks...

just heard about a bigger Bavaria that was bought from charter company. owner had the yard do a complete refit and the generator had to be removed for overhaul. the only way out was through the side of the hull. built like a Motorhome.

overbored said: ... the only way out was through the side of the hull. built like a Motorhome. Click to expand...

I just finished up a charter with DYC - with the caveat that I have only done one charter with them, I would will probably never charter with them again, and would never put a boat into charter with them. We were on a 2015 Bali 4.3 - I was interested in it as a possible BVI charter. The boat was only two years old, but was not in great shape - all the cabinetry hardware was ready to be replaced - hinges completely rusted, faucets badly corroded. We also had a problem with cockroaches on the charter which resulted in them fogging the boat after we returned it. Our electronics had nothing but problems - wifi was almost worthless since we were unable to connect to it much of the time. The main chartplotter at the helm froze on a regular basis and had to be rebooted on a regular basis. The sails looked pretty knackered as well, but I don't have a frame of reference if that would be considered typical. The bottom of the boat was in bad need of cleaning - lots of green slime growing on the bottom. One of our heads blocked completely on the trip necessitating two trips out by the repair team and a complete tear down to fix. Fortunately the head belonged to the skipper that was on board, so we weren't the cause of it. The skipper that was on board was great but did make the comment that after about 2 years in charter the boats are about done - can't imagine what they look like after 5 years. I sent an email outlining my experience to DYC - have to yet to hear back. There are better charter companies out there then DYC - we are on our second charter with BVI Yacht Charters in a 2016 Helia and the difference is night and day - of course it is a newer boat, and is better designed boat, but I'm sure glad that we got the better yacht as our second charter rather than the first!

Be wary of the tax advantages associated with charter ownership. Most models I've seen show depreciation deductions, which are perfectly legal, but are also critical to make the numbers work. Since the boat will actually depreciate, that portion that represents actual reduction in value is truly a tax advantage. However, tax laws let you keep going, until your tax basis is zero. This means that when you ultimately sell the boat, you will pay taxes on whatever you sell her for. On the maintenance side, you want the best show available. Getting a hunk of junk back at the end just has to be a nightmare. It will, however, have accelerated rental wear and tear. It will never look like it was owner sailed.

Top 5 Charter Yachts for Profitable Ownership

Yacht charter management programs work well for a number of reasons, allowing owners to experience the joy of sailing the world and the cruising lifestyle without the hassle and expense of traditional ownership. Once you’ve started exploring various yacht brands and management programs, you may have wondered which boats perform best when placed in our charter fleet. The yacht’s brand reputation, number of cabins, size, and sailing performance all play a part in determining its “charter-ability” – and therefore – profitability ! In general, when comparing yachts of similar size and features, boats with more cabins are preferred by charter guests. And charterers love catamarans – offering spacious common areas inside and out, and large comfortable cabins.

We’ve compiled the data and crunched the numbers to come up with our top 5 best charter yachts. In the process, we considered the boat’s purchase price, average boat rental rate for one week, and the historical number of charter weeks annually, to come up with a revenue-per-year to purchase-price ratio.

Of course, there are so many other considerations when purchasing your dream yacht. But if you’re looking for a high-performing charter yacht with a history of solid returns on investment, read on to learn more about the catamarans that made our top 5 charter yacht list.

Top 5 Dream Yacht Charter Boats

#1 – Bali 4.6 & Bali 4.8 Revenue to Purchase Price Ratio: 35.2% Sometimes the numbers are just too close to make a judgment call, and such is the case with the Bali 4.6 and Bali 4.8 catamarans! Just step onboard, and begin to understand why these stellar boats are among the most sought-after, best charter yachts in the Dream Yacht Charter fleet.

We believe much of the reason comes down to the massive and supremely usable outdoor spaces in the aft cockpit, foredeck and flybridge. The Bali 4.6 offers 5-cabins, with 2 forepeak cabins, an ideal charter layout and the only boat in this size category to offer 5 guest cabins. The Bali 4.8 goes a step further, with an amazing 6-cabin/6-head version – very comfortably accommodating 12 charter guests.

With a 25-foot beam, these yachts offer charterers all the comforts of home, including excellent natural light and ventilation, loads of storage space, and a coveted full-size refrigerator/freezer. A salon door opens directly to the massive foredeck featuring sun beds, cushioned seating and dinette table. And of course, the famous Bail signature “garage-door” style opening to the aft cockpit area is always a guest favorite – allowing for a completely open-air salon.

In short, the Bali 4.6 and Bali 4.8 are the yachts in the Dream Yacht Charter fleet that sell the most charter weeks per year, consistently performing very well, and loved by our charter guests!

#2 – Bali Catspace Revenue to Purchase Price Ratio: 35% Second in our lineup of best charter yachts, is the 4-cabin/4-head Bali Catspace. Once aboard, it’s easy to understand how the Catspace got her name. Her designers managed to give this 40-foot catamaran a surprisingly spacious and airy feel, with large comfortable front cabins, and an impressively-sized flybridge comparable to those found on larger yachts. A large foredeck cushioned sun bed and cockpit lounge area replaces the traditional catamaran trampoline – a unique feature in this size category – allowing for wonderfully usable space while chartering, perfect for lounging and socializing.

Of course, the Catspace also features Bali’s signature tilting “garage-style” door, opening up the large interior saloon to the aft cockpit for a seamless indoor/outdoor experience.

Bali Catspace interior and exterior

#3 – Bali 4.2 Revenue to Purchase Price Ratio: 32.7% Like the other Bali catamarans in our lineup, comfort and spaciousness are immediately noticeable upon boarding the 4-cabin/4-head Bali 4.2. The large forward galley and full size refrigerator make it convenient to cook for a large charter group of friends and family. The airy saloon is made more like the cozy ambiance of home with the option for 2 facing sofas, and opens to the aft cockpit through the tilting door for a wide open indoor/outdoor flow. And everyone can appreciate the added convenience of the front doorway to the foredeck from the salon. The Bali 4.2, comes in at number 3 on our list, but ranks first for the best ratio of charter price per week when related to boat purchase price – for a winning yacht ownership opportunity.

Bali 4.2 interior and exterior

#4 – Lagoon 40 Revenue to Purchase Price Ratio: 31% Next up is the Lagoon 40. At the lowest purchase price in our best charter yacht lineup, this 40-foot 4-cabin/4-head catamaran earns a respectable charter demand and boat rental price making it a solid investment opportunity at a lower investment cost.

The Lagoon 40 is perfect for those charterers that appreciate the traditional trampoline foredeck and raised helm station. Inside you’ll find an efficient galley and salon well-lit from the panoramic windows. The cabins below – and in particular the aft cabins – are large in size compared to other yachts in the category. The Lagoon 40 is also known for excellent sailing performance, and remarkable stability due to a wide 22’ beam.

Lagoon 40 interior and exterior

#5 – Fountaine Pajot Elba 45 Revenue to Purchase Price Ratio: 29.7% Rounding our top 5 list is the 4-cabin/4-head Fountaine Pajot Elba 45. This impressive 4-cabin/4-bath 45-foot catamaran boasts clean lines, elegant interior finishes, and a light and bright salon with large panoramic windows and skylight. The massive flybridge is a charterer-favorite gathering spot, with large cushioned sun bed, and ample wraparound seating for comfort underway or just enjoying evening cocktails. Enjoy swimming and water sports with easy access to the water via the wide transom steps and swim platform. Sailors will appreciate that the Elba 45 ranks among the best in terms of sailing performance for its category.

What Is the Best Yacht Charter Ownership Program? A Comprehensive Guide

What is the best yacht charter ownership program  a comprehensive guide.

If you've ever dreamt of owning a sailing yacht and embarking on life-changing adventures while maximizing your investment, Navigare Yachting’s yacht charter ownership programs can turn that dream into a reality.

With several options available, how do you determine the best yacht charter ownership program for your needs? In this guide, we'll explore the key features and benefits of Navigare Yachting's most popular Ultimate ownership program, providing valuable insights to help you make an informed decision and see if this is the right fit for you.

Flexible Investment Program:

Navigare Yachting’s Ultimate program provides unparalleled flexibility and empowers you to steer the course of your yacht ownership experience. With this program, you have complete control over how often you explore our 11 destinations and have the potential to maximize your charter revenue with a variable income of up to 12% annually.

This program sends the majority of the revenue to the owner. From this revenue stream, you will pay the maintenance expenses of the yacht. The additional risk allows the program to qualify for US tax advantages and, typically, offers the highest return. With this program, your yacht can quickly turn into a profit-generating asset.

To learn more in-depth about the Ultimate program, check out this webinar .

Yacht Ownership Made Easy:

With the Ultimate program, you purchase a new yacht through Navigare Yachting, which is then placed in our charter fleet. In our ownership programs, Navigare takes care of all the logistics associated with maintenance and charter turnover, relieving you of the hassle and saving you both money and time.

Enjoy the privileges of yacht ownership without stress. Leave all the work associated with boat ownership for us. You’ll enjoy your boat on your own schedule and let it generate income the rest of the time without having to lift a finger.

Maximize Income Potential:

The Ultimate Program is not our most popular program without reason. One of its most significant advantages is the opportunity to maximize your income. With the Ultimate program, also known as the variable program, you can capitalize on any unused owner weeks by leaving the boat available for charter to increase your earnings. The percentage of income varies depending on factors such as the type of boat you buy, destination choice, and yacht maintenance.

While the Ultimate program has the potential to be the most profitable, if you prefer a higher level of security, you may opt for the Complete or Smart programs instead, which offer a guaranteed income and no maintenance costs or the ability to offset the initial cost of the yacht using charter revenue.

Flexibility to Explore the World:

Imagine indulging in the pleasures of sailing the world as little or as often as you desire. In this investment program, you can use your yacht for up to 12 weeks per year. This opportunity gives you the choice between maximizing your revenue by leaving the yacht available for charter or getting the most out of your investment by sailing more.

All of our ownership programs not only give you access to your own boat but to our entire fleet and all of our 11 destinations. With a steep discount, you can charter any other yacht in the fleet, giving you the exclusive opportunity to explore other parts of the world and other yacht models while your own boat generates income.

The Ultimate program offers a flexible sailing schedule, where you have the ability to reserve the boat last minute if it has not been booked by charter guests. Additionally, you can share your yacht with your loved ones as owner weeks can be used by your direct family members, without extra charge to them.

Expert Guidance and Support:

At Navigare Yachting, our team of experts takes care of yacht maintenance and charter turnovers, ensuring that you can enjoy your yacht stress-free.

We provide professional yacht and charter management services, with a dedicated owner support system. Our owner’s concierge will take care of you from the day you enter the fleet to the day you leave it, helping you book your owner’s weeks and taking care of any inquiries you might have.

Furthermore, our unique online Service Platform allows you to track all planned and completed services in real-time, keeping a close eye on your vessel at all times.

Holiday Program Rewards:

In our charter fleet, in addition to the sailing time mentioned above, you gain access to our exclusive Holiday Program called Thirdhome . This program allows you to earn points that can be exchanged for unforgettable vacations on land anywhere in the world. Whether you prefer sailing on your own yacht (or another yacht in our fleet) or exploring various worldwide destinations and live in luxury vacation homes, the Ultimate program offers it all.

Thirdhome will take your vacations to the next level, exchanging your week on the water for a luxury ski resort in the Alps, a massive villa in Bali, or a beautiful beach house in Costa Rica while only paying a small cleaning and booking fee. The Holiday program offers thousands of luxury vacation rentals globally and is a truly unique opportunity to get even more out of your yacht ownership.

Carefully Planned Exit Strategy:

When considering a yacht ownership program, it's essential to have a clear exit strategy in mind. Navigare Yachting understands this and offers guidance tailored to your long-term goals and will assist you in making the best decision.

Through our ownership programs, we offer many beneficial exit strategies, whether you want to continue owning boats, take a break from the boating lifestyle, or retire and go cruising.

Thanks to the high market value of our yachts at the end of the charter program, one reasonable option is to simply sell the boat. Trading the vessel in for a new boat is another great option that tailors to those who want to continue living the boating lifestyle within a financially sound framework. Or why not retire on your yacht and sail away into the horizon? Enjoy complete freedom and explore the world.

No matter what you choose, our sales representatives are here to guide you through every step of your exit from the fleet.

All of Navigare Yachting's yacht charter ownership programs provide an exceptional opportunity to own a yacht, maximize your investment, and enjoy unforgettable sailing adventures all at the same time. The Ultimate program has been our most popular historically due to its flexibility, income potential, expert guidance, and access to exclusive benefits. The Ultimate program clearly stands out as an excellent choice for those seeking a financially rewarding yacht ownership program.

Our team of experts is ready to help you embark on a journey of luxury, freedom, and financial rewards, so what are you waiting for? Don’t hesitate to get in touch and start your yacht ownership adventure with Navigare Yachting today!

Is Charter Ownership for Me?

Bali Catamaran

Ask any seasoned sailor, and they’ll likely tell you their favorite memories are tied to their boat. But boats are also a lot of work, and no one ever has called a private yacht cost-effective. For this reason, many owners choose to put their boat to work by placing it in a charter management program.

“There’s a huge economical advantage. But there’s a cost as well; a lot of people will be on the boat,” says Bruno Lemieux, who works in yacht sales, operation and development for Dream Yacht Sales.

Boats can be in Dream Yacht’s charter programs for up to 5 1/2 years, and the No. 1 question prospective owners have is:

What will my boat look like in five years?

A charter boat works hard, up to 33 weeks a year, in order to pay for all its expenses plus generate revenue for its owner.

“Yes, it will get some wear and tear for sure” says Yanik Aubé, Dream Yacht’s America and North Caribbean sales director. “But any boat just sitting at the dock gets damaged—by neglect, salt air, or even by just rubbing on the dock… In this case, damages will be fixed by the base, and you don’t have to worry about it. You have a team that’s going to do it. And instead of paying $90,000 to $100,000 a year for insurance, dockage and maintenance, those are paid for you. Plus, you receive 8 percent of your boat purchase price per year in revenue in some of our programs.”

Tahiti

When the yacht nears the end of its service, Dream Yacht does a phaseout to return it to the owner in good condition.

“About 30 days before the end of the contract, we start building a list of things that need to be repaired. The contract is clear that everything needs to be working. All the equipment on board that was there at the beginning will be there and working, and all the original inventory will be matched. The gelcoat will be done; the bottom paint, if not done within the last 12 months, will be done; sails will be refurbished,” says Lemieux, who was in the owner-care department before sales.

He explains that the contract covers all this and is quite straightforward. What is not covered is normal wear and tear for cosmetic items such as cushions. If any cushions are missing or torn, they will all be replaced per the matching inventory stipulation, but if they are simply worn, they will not be.

“I’ve been through about 25 phaseouts in the last year, and I have to say, Dream Yacht is doing a very fair phaseout. When the boat stops, they really spend the money and time to make sure the owners are leaving with a well-maintained boat,” Lemieux says.

yacht

So, is it worth it?

The yearly return of 8 percent of the purchase price that Aubé quoted is Dream Yacht Sales’ guaranteed income program, called Dream Guarantee. It more than covers the depreciation of the boat. After 5 1/2 years in charter, about 45 percent of the purchase price has been paid back to the owner. Dream Yacht also offers a shared-revenue plan called Dream Performance, where charter income is split, 35 percent to the company and 65 percent to the owner. But the owner also pays for all expenses, the big three being dockage, insurance and maintenance. In real numbers, historical data has shown that after commissions and expenses are paid, if a boat is chartered at least 22 weeks a year in the Performance program, the owner receives an average of 30 percent of all gross charter revenue. “So, if your boat generates $180,000 in revenue, you can expect to get around $54,000 in your pocket at the end,” says Aubé. With some of the management programs offered by Dream Yacht Charter (Performance or Performance Plus) you can factor in the potential tax advantages of buying a yacht as an investment, which can be up to 35 percent of the purchase price, depending on the purchaser’s tax bracket, making the figures even more compelling. “In many situations, up to 90 percent of your boat gets paid (after charter service), and it’s still worth a lot more than that,” says Aubé.

cruising with family

How will my boat be maintained?

In the Dream Guarantee program, the company is responsible for and pays for everything. “If an engine blows, we will not call the owner; we’ll just replace the engine,” says Lemieux. After all, it’s in Dream Yacht’s best interest to keep the boat in good working order. In addition, a yearly maintenance period, including haulout, is built into the schedule.

The company also handles all repairs and maintenance items for Performance program yachts, but it will consult with the owners first because, of course, the owners are paying the bills.

In the works is a new platform that tracks maintenance, hours and parts for owners in both programs. “Owners will have access to this app in real time and know exactly what’s being done every day. It’s currently being tested in the Med in France and will be launched in America at the end of the year,” says Aubé.

Can I choose where it is based?

Yes—for owners of Performance yachts. “They can decide, ‘I want my boat in Annapolis during the summer, and I want it in BVI in winter.’ No problem. You’re covering the cost, you get the revenue, so you make the decision,” says Aubé.

In the Guarantee program, the boat is promised a region rather than a specific base. “If you say, ‘I would like my boat in the BVI,’ we will put it there and try to keep it located there, but it might have to be moved to another base if demand fluctuates,” Aubé says. In this scenario, the yacht would stay in the northern Caribbean region of the USVI, BVI and Bahamas. “We are the one who decides if it needs to be moved, but we will always work towards having the boat where the owner wants it to be at first.”

Exumas, Bahamas

When can I use my boat?

In the Dream Guarantee program, an owner can sail up to 12 weeks a year, paying only a nominal cleaning/turnaround fee. Moreover, they can use these weeks on their own boat or on any similar model in Dream Yacht Charter’s 45-plus locations around the world.

It’s phrased “up to” 12 weeks because it’s seasonally dependent. Owners can book in advance either two weeks in high season and two weeks in low season, or six weeks in low season, plus they can book six weeks in high or low season last minute, meaning 10 days out.

In the Dream Performance program, owners can do what they’d like on their own boat. “There’s basically no limit of usage. So, if the owner wants Christmas, that’s fine,” says Lemieux.

A charter management program isn’t for everyone. An owner who doesn’t want to share their boat, expects it to be exactly as they left it each time they return, or enjoys tinkering on it every weekend is not a good fit for charter. But for those who are easing into boat ownership—perhaps slowing down on work commitments before the quintessential “sailing off into the sunset”—charter service can be a smart path. Not only does it make sense economically, but it also gives owners time to get to know their boat and gain sailing experience with the safety net of having a professional team looking after their boat.
