CHANTICLEER Yacht for Sale

CHANTICLEER is one of the Grand Dames of yachting. Originally built for Ogden Phipps and named BUCKPASSER after one of his more famous thoroughbreds, she was designed by Jack Hargrave and, at the time, was the largest vessel built by Burger, and the first Burger with a helipad.

She was purchased by singer, actress and philanthropist Frances Langford in 1986. Ms. Langford was a passionate yachtswoman, and it was she who added the cockpit to facilitate her love of fishing. CHANTICLEER was enjoyed by Ms. Langford, friends, family and dignitaries until the time of her passing in 2005. Since that time she has had three owners, each devoted to preserving the legacy through obsession to preventative maintenance, upgrades and attention to detail.

The time has come for a new chapter as her current owners have other matters to attend. Their desire is that the next owners not only appreciate the overall quality of CHANTICLEER, but also value her place in yachting's history.

Chanticleer, yacht made famous by frances langford, back in familiar waters.

By Curt Devine

For decades, Treasure Coast residents could spot renowned singer/actress Frances Langford cruising on her vintage 108-foot yacht, the Chanticleer, in local waters.

While the yacht has changed hands twice since Langford passed away in 2005, it now rests in Florida again at the Palm Harbor Marina in West Palm Beach. And it is sporting a new paint job and up-to-date renovations.

Local residents have a chance next month to see the yacht that became synonymous with the beloved local icon.

The Frances Langford estate first sold the Chanticleer in 2006 to Jon Couch, a Washington businessman. Then when current owner Marty Sutter saw that the yacht was for sale again in 2007, he knew he had to have it.

"The Chanticleer combines classic beauty and history," he said. "It's a pedigree of yachts."

Sutter, the 56-year-old co-founder and managing director of health care venture capital firm Essex Woodlands Health Ventures, said he and his wife, Lisa, had long admired the yacht since they first saw it near Lake Huron in the late 1990s.

He said it caught his attention as a Burger cockpit motor yacht, noting that most enthusiasts consider the Burger Boat Co. the highest-quality yacht manufacturer.

Adding to its uniqueness, the Chanticleer was the first Burger yacht to have a helipad built on its deck, but Sutter joked that Langford converted this into a dining area and used the boat's extra space for fishing.

Sutter and his wife live in Texas but spend their winters vacationing on the yacht in the Caribbean, where they have villas in the British Virgin Islands. Once, they spent six weeks on the yacht touring the eastern Caribbean.

Inside, the Chanticleer resembles a five-star hotel, having an interior made of rare rosewood, sapele and mahogany. Although it is worth about $5 million, Sutter said the history makes it more valuable.

The yacht was originally built in 1973 for Ogden Phipps, a stockbroker known for philanthropy and thoroughbred horse racing. Frances Langford bought it in the 1980s.

To honor the history, Sutter and his wife preserved the VIP stateroom with Langford's movie posters and memorabilia.

Although Sutter does not understand why the yacht was named Chanticleer, which translates to "sing clear" in French, he said he could never change it.

"It would be like renaming your grandmother," he said. "This boat just has so much character."

ON DISPLAY IN KEY LARGO

The Chanticleer will be displayed from Dec. 1-4 in Key Largo at Ocean Reef Club's 17th annual Vintage Weekend, an event that celebrates vintage cars, planes and boats. The event is open to the public. More information is available at www.oceanreef.com/Happenings-and-Events/Vintage-Weekend-324.html

Vessel Walk Through

CHANTICLEER is a proper yacht in all respects, and moving about is facilitated by spacious decks and wide-open

Boarding either port or starboard provides access fore or aft, and multiple entrances to the interior. Moving aft

through wing doors leads to the fully covered and enclosed aft deck and the exquisite dining. This area is air conditioned, or, there is plenty of natural ventilation for

al fresco dining. A large aft door leads to the cockpit, and there is a spiral staircase to the boat deck.

Going forward through a sliding glass door and over the CHANTCLEER threshold you enter the rich mahogany and

leather saloon and gentlemen's bar. This area is both sophisticated and inviting at the same time. Mahogany is

used throughout and the beaded headliner with recessed lighting presents a tasteful contrast. Large windows run

the entire length port and starboard giving panoramic views to all.

Just forward of the saloon is the similarly styled day head.

Continuing forward from the saloon along the starboard side is a companionway leading to the pilothouse access,

and further forward to the galley and forward lounge.

The in-line galley provides abundant counterspace and storage. Additionally, there is plenty of refrigeration and

freezer capacity giving the chef all he/she needs to produce gourmet meals aboard.

The forward lounge features a raised full-beam U-shaped settee and two teak tables that encourage relaxed

conversations in a casual setting. Natural light abounds.

The accommodation deck is accessed from the aft starboard side of the saloon. Descending the stairs you come to

the companionway which leads to the midship full-beam master stateroom, the aft VIP stateroom and two (2)

additional guest staterooms. Both the master and VIP staterooms have en suite heads. There is a third head for the

other staterooms.

The pilothouse gives the captain excellent visibility and sight lines, and all controls and nav aids are within easy

reach and easily referenced.

The flybridge and boat deck a extremely spacious. The flybridge provides a centerline helm as well as full control

stations port and starboard. The boat deck has added space that was originally used as the helipad.

The fore deck is ship-like and perfect for lounging and observing those idyllic sunrises and sunsets.

Crews quarters are forward and down from the galley. There is a crew's mess, captain's cabin with en suite head,

chef's cabin and a third cabin with three (3) single berths.

The engine room access is from the crew's quarters.

Staff headshot of Peter Dujardin.

A legendary boat is on its way back.

The Chanticleer, a 118-foot-long yacht once owned by the late Ralph Evinrude of the outboard-motor company and his wife, Hollywood actress Frances Langford, was one of the more famous pleasure boats of the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s.

It appeared in a Hollywood movie. It was featured in books about the most famous yachts. It made a trip to Europe and back in the 1960s, stopping everywhere from France to Greece to Egypt. The late actor Jackie Gleason used it from time to time.

“It was just so beautifully done,” said Langford, now 91 and living in Florida. “It was not like any other boat. It was the prettiest boat up and down the water.”

But more recently, the Chanticleer fell into a terrible state of disrepair. Yachting experts thought that it was more likely to be consigned to the scrap heap than to get back on the seas.

But an involved series of twists is giving the Chanticleer new life.

Looking out the window from a passing train in 2000, Greg Copley — president of a foreign-affairs association in Washington, D.C., and a yachting aficionado — spotted the Chanticleer at a pier in Maryland. He tracked down the owner, bought the yacht and sent it to Davis Boat Works in Newport News to return it to its former glory.

But then, in late 2001, the repairs got too expensive, and Copley could no longer keep up payments. Davis Boat Works’ owner, state Sen. Frank Wagner of Virginia Beach, took possession of the yacht and put it on the market.

In the fall of 2002, a 15-year-old New Hampshire boy, Oliver Max Chisholm, saw the ad for the boat on the Internet. He persuaded his father — Paul Chisholm, a wealthy businessman who owns a Boston interior woodworking company — to buy it. In late 2002, Oliver, his dad and Jack Meriot, who owned a boat engine repair service in Boston, came to Newport News to check out the Chanticleer.

“I told him I thought we had something to work with,” said the French- and English-speaking Meriot.

They bought the famous yacht for less than $80,000. Chisholm is footing the significant repair bill — so far about $500,000 and counting.

Chisholm still has his woodworking business. Meriot — who originally hails from Guadeloupe in the Caribbean — closed his Boston shop and is now living on the Chanticleer at a pier in Newport News.

At a spot in the small-boat harbor off Jefferson Avenue — in a spot rented from J&R; Tidewater Welding — Meriot works about 70 hours a week, fixing up the yacht. J&R; does some of the welding.

The plan: rent the Chanticleer as a charter boat in the Caribbean by next year, with crew and all accouterments available and Meriot as the captain.

The Chanticleer was built in 1947 by the DeFoe Shipbuilding Co. in Bay City, Mich., with thick steel that was left over from World War II Navy shipbuilding.

In fact, the company modeled the yacht’s hull off of a Navy torpedo chaser craft. The boat’s hull was made of corten steel, which doesn’t rust easily.

“I think what made it unique was the width of the hull,” said Wagner, of Davis Boat Works. “It is narrower, more classic of a warship than a yacht, which is usually fatter and wider. It has much cleaner lines in the water that a normal yacht.”

The 166-ton boat is 18.5 feet wide and had quarters for eight crew members — two single cabins and a six-bunk cabin. It also had four double staterooms, each with a shower and bathroom. Upstairs, it had a large main saloon, a bar saloon, a dining room and after-deck dining area.

Evinrude — the son of the outboard-motor company’s founder — bought the yacht in 1954 and added the latest high-tech gadgetry, including a 45-mile radar and separate music for different rooms. He also had stabilizing fins installed — retractable ones, allowing the Chanticleer to get in and out of tight spots.

“She was intended for long periods of comfortable living afloat, and many a dweller would have been goggle-eyed at her appointments,” wrote Bill Robinson in the 1971 book “Legendary Yachts.”

To reduce noise, Evinrude also had a five-bladed propeller installed, replacing the three-bladed propeller. He soundproofed the engine room, which had four six-cylinder diesel engines, each with 180 horsepower. That gave the yacht a cruising speed of about 14 or 15 knots (16 or 17 mph).

“It ran very quiet,” said Capt. Karam Haddan of Stuart, Fla., who was on the crew when Evinrude owned the boat and who still works with Langford on her yachts.

“He’d put a glass down on a table before we’d start up the engines, and if the ice rattled in the glass when we’d crank them up, he’d want someone to dive down to see if something was wrong.”

Langford starred in “Yankee Doodle Dandy” and “Hollywood Hotel,” among other movies, and was sent abroad to entertain U.S. troops during World War II. With Langford’s cachet, the yacht was featured in books and boating magazines. It was featured in “The Day of the Dolphin,” a 1971 movie about a marine biologist who learns that his trained dolphins are being used in a plot to destroy the president’s yacht.

But Langford considered the yacht more her husband’s than hers because he always invested so much energy to it.

After he died, she sold it and bought a new yacht, which she also named the Chanticleer — the name of the rooster in a medieval epic.

Langford sold the older Chanticleer to Sam du Pont, a descendent of Pierre Samual du Pont, who turned his family’s powder-works company into a diversified megabusiness.

The boat’s history over the next 15 years in the du Pont family is unclear.

But in late 2000, when Copley spotted the boat tied to the pier at Havre de Grace, Md., he knew it was a famous boat, just by the look of it, said Capt. Bert “Skip” Phillips, his skipper from Nova Scotia, Canada.

After Copley tracked down the boat, he bought it. His idea, Phillips said, was to rent out the boat after he fixed it up.

But the Chanticleer, Phillips said, had simply been ignored for too long, and with leaks, there was water and bilge almost everywhere.

Copley decided that he needed to cut his losses.

“It was in a worse state than we figured,” Phillips said. “It was beyond redemption. The bloody boat was murdered, it’s as simple as that. All of the materials were top of the tree, but it’s like a car that you just let sit there and rot.”

It was then, after Davis Motor Works put the boat up for sale, that 15-year old Oliver found the boatwhile surfing the Web in New England.

Meriot and Chisholm’s initial plan had been to steer it back to Boston and repair it there. But when Meriot was about to do so in late 2002, the Coast Guard told him that Boston Harbor was frozen, so he remained in Newport News.

He’s lived on the boat the whole time. He even stayed on the boat during Hurricane Isabel in September, he said, on the lookout for any runaway fishing boats.

He and two helpers are putting in new deckplates, fuel tanks, floors of the crew quarters and fiberglass on the roof. He revamped the controls near the steering wheel, adding a global positioning system, a new radar system and a whole series of controls that link to the engine room. He’s putting in insulation, air conditioning, a new electrical system and new plumbing — and he’s glad that the 1947 schematics were still on the yacht to help him out.

Meriot and Chisholm are keeping a lot of the original parts of the yacht, including old furniture.

The plan is to complete the project by October, but the job will likely run into next year.

And when he goes back to the Caribbean to run the charter business, Meriot — who moved to Boston with his former wife in the early 1970s — will be going home.

Or maybe the boat itself — with all the hours that he’s spent on it — is his true home now.

“The more I work on it, the more I know the boat and the more I like it,” Meriot said. “I feel really confident in it.

“It’s not like I just had the money and bought a boat. It’s going to be a much different feeling.” *

Burger's 118' "Chanticleer"

Discussion in ' Burger Yacht ' started by YachtForums , Apr 14, 2005 .

Spotted this classic work of Burger craftsmenship in Jensen Beach, Florida. "Chanticleer" was formerly owned by Ralph Evinrude (outboard motor fame). Currently, it his owned by his widow... Ms. Francis Langford, who resides nearby the marina. According to sources, the boat is used by Francis on a regular basis to go (of all things) fishing! It doesn't seem to be any worse for the wear. It is impeccably maintained. I was excited to see this yacht. Thought you might enjoy it too...

Burger vs. Defoe The pictures are clearly of the Chanticleer. If she is a Burger, which I know was the brand/mfgr of the most recent Chanticleer, then she bears a striking resemblance to the original Chanticleer, as owned by Ralph Evinrude and Francis Langford from the time of her launch, I believe. I have seen posts indicating the current Chanticleer is either 98, 110, or 118 feet. Be that as it may, I know for a fact that the original boat was 118' feet because I was a deck hand on one of her four (4) sisterships, produced by Defoe Ship Yards of Bay City Michigan. Pictures are posted on the Defow web site, which is not very active, as the senior most Defoe just passed on in 2005. Defoe built many ships for the US Navy and the Cruisemaster line was to fill in slack capacity at the yard, after WWII. So, the original Chanticleer was a 118' 1947 or so Defoe "Cruisemaster" with four General Motors 6-71N Diesels, mounted 2 in-line on a side. I served on the sistership Natoya and both boats were active in the Great Lakes. The Chanticleer spent the summers in the "North Channel", while the Natoya was usually in N. Lake Huron, Lk Superior, or Lk. Michigan and once on a while in the N. Channel. She was berthed in Cheboygan, MI or achored off the Mertaugh Boat Works in Hessel, MI. The Natoya owner was Harold DuCharme of Grosse Pte. MI, now deceased. The Natoya was sold and sailed to Florida in the mid-late 1960's and has a very brief cameo shot in a James Bond movie. The reason for anchoring off Mertaugh's in Hessel was that the Captain, James Mertaugh, was a brother to the owner of Mertaugh's. Jim passed on in AZ in the 1990's. The original Chantilcleer was sold in the late 1990's to an east coast boat yard and is up on the hard somewhere on the E. Coast. There are pictures posted on a web site and she is for sale. But the pictures will show much corrosion around her stabilizers forward. She was seen headed out East by the owner of the Wicked Witch, Les Swanson of Traverse City, MI. Unfortunately, Mrs. Langford passed away in the July 2005. The Burger Chanticleer was most recently seen about that time in the Grosse Pte. Yacht Club. Trivia for the record.
Interesting! Thanks for sharing. By the way, welcome aboard! When I first spotted Chanticleer, I thought for sure it was a Burger, but the oval windows below the pilothouse thru me off a bit. I ventured a call to David Ross at Burger and he confirmed it. Quite an illustrious history with this boat, Ralph Evinrude and Francis Langford!

Defoe Cruisemasters..... It was good to read the letter from a former "Natoya" crewman. There were 5 Cruisemasters built by Defoe but I can only remember the names of 3. They were "Savitar", "Natoya" and "Chanticleer". I knew Captain Jim Mertaugh for years as I worked at the Detroit Boat Basin where she was the last to be hauled in the fall and the first to be launched in the spring. With the help of the Mill foreman I designed a sort of yard tug out of a "work punt" with a well for an outboard which we used to push "Natoya" from her layup dock to the Marineways. That allowed Capt Jim and the crew to lay everything up early and not be concerned about running her engines. "Natoya" is now part of the artificial reef off Dade County, FL. I was aboard her in her final days. She'd been re-painted white (from her former Navy gray) and had fallen on hard times. I had asked for her engine quadrant but it was not to be. They were fine old boats. Would enjoy hearing from any members of the old crews. < [email protected] >
Recieved this note from Quincy Leslie... *************************************************** Captain Bob/Carl: Great to hear from someone who had contact with the ole' Natoya. As you know, she was owned for all her like, except for the very last years by Harold DuCharme of Grosse Pte. He actually owned Windmill Pointe, or similar name of some major section of GP. He was very well to do, and his younger relatives called him "Unkie". You mentioned that she was painted white in her last few years. On a point of pure trivia, I am absolutely convince that she had a very brief cameo shot in a 1960's James Bond move, Thunderball, which featured a large yacht that could break into two sections, one of which was a high speed hydrofoil boat. At any rate, for some reason, maybe they needed a stock shot, a boat identical to the Natoya, painted white, is shown floating offshore in the background while James Bond and the villian are have a discussion on a shoreside home lawn. Since the other shots both long and close up are not the Natoya, it makes it all the more interesting; you get the movie and check it out yourself. Her sister the Chanticleer also fell on hard times, after her owner Mrs. Ralph Evinrude, i.e. the movie star singer Alice Faye, sold her and replaced her with a Burger. I should have downloaded the images, but she showed up on a web site for a marina out east up on the hard. She had considerable corrosion around the stabilizer fins, which was interesting, as the Natoya had no such fins. I think they bought her cheap thinking to fix her up, but I suspect she was due for scrap. Also, recently there was a mention of the Chanticleer in a recent Lakeland Boating. I need to drop them a line. Thanks for the response. Write some more into, as I would be interested to hear. Capt. Jim died in AZ several years ago, I was told, and the family sold the Mertauge Boat works in Hessel, where Jim also lived, 5-7 years ago. Thanks again, Quincy Leslie
Wrong Owner Name In my prior post I inadvertantly referenced "Alice Faye" as Ralph Evinrude's wife and final owner of the Chanticleer. While Alice Faye was a fine actress and singer from the same period as Francis Langford, in fact I should have said that Francis Langford was the final owner of the Chanticleer and had been married to Ralph Evinrude. So this should correct my prior error and sorry for any inconvenience.

Chanticleer To be specific ... CHANTICLEER was commisioned by my Great Uncle, John C. Pace. My Father, Thomas M. Pace, Sr took delivery of CHANTICLEER at the DeFoe yard, and ran her through the Great Lakes, out the St Lawrence Seaway, where they encountered exceptionally rough weather causing 38-degree rolls ... at 118' LOA and roughly 18' beam with a round bottom, the much later added stabilizers were no doubt a Godsend. She was sold to a foreign national many years later, and ultimately became the proud and happy ship for Ralph Evinrude. amd thus the connection to Mrs. Stuart. If anyone knows of the yard or the website where CHANTICLEER can be found, I would appreciate learning it - Shortly after the end of WW II, my Great Uncle John wanted a fine yacht, and contacted old man Huckins ... after some discussions about the size and specifics of the boat (a 58'-64' plan), my Great Uncle added he preferred a blue hull. As the story goes, Mr. Huckins responded that ALL Huckins boats were grey. John replied that if he was paying for the boat to be built, he could choose whatever hull color he so desired ... Huckins replied that if he was going to build it, the boat would be grey. John calmly relplied, ' Mr. Huckins, it appears we cannot do business' ... shortly after, Mr. DeFoe agreed to build John the 118' CHANTICLEER, with a dark blue hull.
Thomas, As posted by Alycia from Burger Yacht Sales (above your post), Chanticleer is located in Stuart (Jensen Beach actually). The estate of Francis Langford is also for sale in this area. Here is a link to Chanticleer's listing on YachtWorld... http://www.**************/core/list...rrency=USD&access=Public&listing_id=5984&url= Thank you for sharing the history on the build and welcome to YachtForums!
Actually, you are slightly mistaken : After the death of Mr Evinrude, the original CHANTICLEER, a 118' DeFoe CruiseMaster, was sold. Miss Langford then purchased the current boat, a 108' 1973 Burger, which she renamed ' Chanticleer'. The boat listed for sale is the second Chantilceer, and not the original.

Of course it is People, First I must say that is a burger, and it is Chanti. I know the Captain and have been all through it at the yard. Whomever said it was used for fishing was totally BS'ing you. That boat hasn't moved in a few years, considering the Mrs. just passed last year, i would say that she was not an avid fisherwoman in her mid 90's before she passed. And its not like it was even a good spot. Its been at the same Marina for 20 years, AND that boat is in pretty bad shape....I mean the crew kept it up as best they could...but there was no money put into maintaining it beyond that until it went up for sale.
Original DeFoe vs recent Burger Hey Geoff - Since you know the most recent Chanticleer, the 108' Burger, I am curious to know if you have any current information about the Evinrude's first Chanticleer - Last word I got was that she was on the hard at a boatyard somewhere in New England - The yacht that I am initerested in is the 118' DeFoe Cruismaster, originally built for, and named ' Chanticleer' by my Great Uncle, John C. Pace shortly after WW II. Thank You, Tom Pace

<[email protected]>

M/Y CHANTICLEER has a most colorful and storied history through the course of her noteworthy previous owners. Although she may be more famous as Frances Langford´s CHANTICLEER, she was originally built for Ogden Phipps, who was one of the dominant figures in thoroughbred horse racing in the 20th century. Phipps was involved with a number of high pedigree horses, including Secretariat, the 1973 Triple Crown winner, and Buckpasser, the 1966 Horse of the Year. The Phipps families collectively have the most Breeders´ Cup wins in history. Ogden enjoyed immense success as an athlete and won 7 US tennis championships and in 1949 was The British Amateur champion. He was inducted into the International Court Tennis Hall of Fame in 2001. Phipps wintered in Palm Beach, which is where he learned of J.B. Hargrave Naval Architects. Noted naval architect Jack Hargrave designed "Buckpasser" as a luxurious four stateroom cruiser in the typical Burger layout of the day. However, Frances Langford was known as the "Sweetheart of World War II". Her trademark song, "I´m in the Mood for Love" captivated soldiers during the 1940s. Her first appearance in Bob Hope´s radio show ("The Pepsodent Show") was in 1941. She performed as a singer and comic actress from 1935 to 1954. While Langford traveled the world with the USO Bob Hope Shows, she often experienced the hazard of war first hand, taking shelter during bombing raids and dodging aerial attacks. Frances was both fascinated and frightened by her experiences in combat zones, but she has always said that the greatest satisfaction in her life was entertaining the troops.

Sanctioned Russian oligarch’s megayacht hides in a UAE creek

RAS AL-KHAIMAH, United Arab Emirates (AP) — In the dusty, northern-most sheikhdom of the United Arab Emirates, where laborers cycle by rustic tea shops, one of the world’s largest yachts sits in a quiet port — so far avoiding the fate of other luxury vessels linked to sanctioned Russian oligarchs.

The display of lavish wealth is startling in one of the UAE’s poorest emirates, a 90-minute drive from the illuminated high-rises of Dubai. But the 118-meter (387-foot) Motor Yacht A’s presence in a Ras al-Khaimah creek also shows the UAE’s neutrality during Russia’s war on Ukraine as the Gulf country remains a magnet for Russian money and its oil-rich capital sees Moscow as a crucial OPEC partner .

Since Russian tanks rolled into Ukraine, the seven sheikhdoms of the Emirates have offered a refuge for Russians, both those despairing of their country’s future as well as the mega-wealthy concerned about Western sanctions .

While much of the world has piled sanctions on Russian institutions and allies of President Vladimir Putin, the Emirates has not. It also avoids overt criticism of the war, which government readouts still refer to as the “Ukraine crisis.”

The Motor Yacht A belongs to Andrey Melnichenko, an oligarch worth some $23.5 billion, according to Forbes. He once ran the fertilizer producer Eurochem and SUEK, one the the world’s largest coal companies.

The European Union in March included Melnichenko in a mass list of sanctions on business leaders and others described as close to Putin. The EU sanctions noted he attended a Feb. 24 meeting Putin held the day of the invasion.

“The fact that he was invited to attend this meeting shows that he is a member of the closest circle of Vladimir Putin and that he is supporting or implementing actions or policies which undermine or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine, as well as stability and security in Ukraine,” the EU said at the time.

Melnichenko resigned from the corporate positions he held in the two major firms, according to statements from the companies. However, he has criticized Western sanctions and denied being close to Putin.

Melnichenko could not be reached for comment through his advisers.

Already, authorities in Italy have seized one of his ships — the $600 million Sailing Yacht A. France, Spain and Britain as well have sought to target superyachts tied to Russian oligarchs as part of a wider global effort to put pressure on Putin and those close to him.

But the $300 million Motor Yacht A so far appears untouched. It flew an Emirati flag on Tuesday when Associated Press journalists observed the ship. Two crew members milled around the deck.

The boat’s last recorded position on March 10 put it off the Maldives in the Indian Ocean, just over 3,000 kilometers (1,860 miles) from Ras al-Khaimah. Satellite images from Planet Labs PBC analyzed by the AP show the vessel in Ras al-Khaimah’s creek beginning March 17, a week later.

The Financial Times first reported on the ship’s presence in the UAE .

Authorities in Ras al-Khaimah did not respond to a request for comment on the yacht’s presence. The UAE’s Foreign Ministry did not answer questions about the ship, but said in a statement to the AP that it takes “its role in protecting the integrity of the global financial system extremely seriously.”

But so far, the UAE has taken no such public action targeting Russia. The country abstained on a U.N. Security Council vote in February condemning Russia’s invasion , angering Washington.

The neutral response may stem from “the financial gain we’re seeing in Dubai in terms of new tourist arrivals, and Russian efforts to move assets and buy property,” said Karen Young, a senior fellow at the Washington-based Middle East Institute.

The flow of Russian money — both legitimate and shady — is now an open secret in Dubai, where lavish hotels and beaches increasingly bustle with Russian speakers. State-run radio hosts cheerily describe a massive influx.

The UAE became one of the few remaining flight corridors out of Moscow. The Emirati government offered three-month multiple-entry visas upon arrival to all Russians, allowing major companies to easily transfer their employees from Moscow to Dubai. The private jet terminal at Al Maktoum International at Dubai World Central has seen a 400% spike in traffic, the airport’s CEO recently told the AP .

Real estate agents have reported a surge of interest from Russians seeking to buy property in Dubai , particularly in the skyscrapers of Dubai Marina and villas on the Palm Jumeirah.

For those who want to move to the UAE, buying high-end property also helps secure a visa.

“Business is booming right now,” said Thiago Caldas, CEO of the Dubai-based property firm Modern Living, which now accepts cryptocurrency to facilitate sales with new Russian clients. “They have a normal life and don’t face restrictions.”

Caldas said inquiries from Russian clients in Dubai have multiplied by over 10 since the war, forcing his firm to hire three Russian-speaking agents to deal with the deluge.

With sanctions on Russian banks and businesses thwarting many citizens’ access to foreign capital, Russians are increasingly trying to bypass bank transfers through digital currencies in Dubai, said two cryptocurrency traders in the city, where they’re able to liquidate large sums of cash.

“It’s a safe haven. … The inflow from Russian accounts skyrocketed 300% days after the war in Ukraine began,” said a Russian crypto trader in Dubai, who spoke like the other on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals.

Meanwhile, Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala state investment company remains among the most active sovereign wealth funds in Russia, along with those of China and Qatar, according to calculations by Javier Capapé of IE University in Spain for the AP.

But pressure is growing. Late on Tuesday, the U.S. Embassy in Abu Dhabi posted a strongly worded video message in solidarity with Ukraine featuring local ambassadors from the world’s leading democracies as Russia’s foreign minister visits the region.

“We are united against Russia’s unjustifiable, unprovoked and illegal aggression,” said Ernst Peter Fischer, Germany’s ambassador to the UAE.
