major yacht races

SAILING is the propulsion of a vehicle and the control of its movement with large (usually fabric) foils called sails. By changing the rigging, rudder, and sometimes the keel or centreboard, a sailor manages the force of the wind on the sails in order to move the vessel relative to its surrounding medium (typically water, but also land and ice) and change its direction and speed. Mastery of the skill requires experience in varying wind and sea conditions, as well as knowledge concerning sailboats themselves and an understanding of one's surroundings.

Yacht racing is a form of sport reserved for yachts and larger sailboats. Yacht racing usually refers to sailboat racing in a variety of forms with large racing yachts; distinguished from dinghy racing.

Top 5 sailing races in the world

Antonia Markou

The yachting industry is full of competitions - professional and amateur. The racing of boats first started in Holland before being introduced in England and America in the 17 th century. Since then, yacht clubs and marine institutions have organised all sorts of competitions for social and recreational purposes. Sailboat races come in a variety of different styles, such as single-handed, around the world, coastal and fleet racing.

Many people might want to attend one of these races, so Yachting Pages has put together a list of top 5 significant sailing races in the world:

1. Cowes Week

Cowes Week

One of the oldest and largest annual sailing regattas of its kind in the world, Cowes Week is an iconic feature of the British sporting calendar. It takes place at Solent with 8,000 competitors, from world champion professionals to amateurs. It is also worth mentioning that Cowes Week has onshore events and parties. It is extremely famous for its iconic fireworks finale on the last day.

2. Volvo Ocean Race

Volvo Ocean Race

Formally known as the Whitbread Round the World Race, the Volvo Ocean Race has taken place every three years since 1973. Starting in Europe in October, it’s known as the longest and the most challenging professional event worldwide as its duration is almost nine months and the competitors face strong weather conditions.

3. America’s Cup

America's Cup

The America’s Cup is one of the oldest international sailboat racing events, dating back to 1851. Its prestigious reputation attracts the top professional sailors, yacht designers and the majority of wealthy entrepreneurs and sponsors. The competition is not only focused on sailing skills but also on sail design.

4. Vendée Globe

Vendée Globe

The Vendée Globe is named after the Département of Vendée, France, where the race starts and ends. A single-handed, non-stop round the world race, it’s widely known as one of the most challenging and extreme sporting events. Its duration is more than three months and it takes places every four years. The Vendée Globe puts sailors under great amounts of pressure and it tests their ability to deal with various technical elements during challenging moments.

5. Barcolana

Barcolana

Barcolana is one of the largest and most popular regattas in the Mediterranean. Its first race was in 1969 and it takes place every year in the Gulf of Trieste, Italy. The race attracts thousands of participants with approximately 25,000 sailors and 250,000 spectators who can enjoy the race from plenty of stands in Trieste. The participating boats are divided into several categories depending on their LOA. The competition allows sailors as young as eight years old to participate, including kite surfers and windsurfers.

Thousands of sailors from more than 35 countries in around 300 boats compete in various courses, depending on the type of boats. Non-spinnaker have more strategic opportunities, maxis and multihulls have races suited to their sailing styles, and live-aboard cruises have a leisurely start time.

Transatlantic Race

The Grand Slam offshore sailing 2,800 NM journey symbolizes the confirmation of a sailor’s naval manhood. Crossing the Atlantic is done from west to east, except in 1870 when the race started in Cork, Ireland and finished in New York, USA. The race is divided into three classes: Racing, Racing/Cruising and Classic Yachts Division. The minimum length overall is 40 feet, there is no maximum length, although yachts over a hundred feet are offered the fourth Superyacht Class.

The current world record of 166 hours and 8 minutes is held by Rambler 100 from 2011. One should try to sail the ocean at least once in a lifetime.

There is also the Single-Handed Trans-Atlantic Race taking place every four years. Only one crew member on board sails the Atlantic for over 20 days. Very physically and mentally challenging .

Feel free to check out more about the Transatlantic Race here.

Transpacific Yacht Race (Transpac), USA

Held biennially since 1906, the race connects the West Coast of the USA with the Hawaiian Islands. The Grand Slam offshore sailing race starts in San Pedro and finishes in Honolulu. A very strategic 2,225 NM long course offers downwind rides, but one should be careful about a dangerously high-pressure area – the North Pacific High.

The current monohull fastest time of 121 hours and 55 minutes is set by Comanche in 2017. For heavy yachts and leisure sailors who like offshore competitions, there is the Aloha class of the race.

Volvo Ocean Race

Beware of the longest and toughest professional sporting event in the world! Held every three years, the race represents the ultimate months-long trip around the world . It was established in 1973 in Portsmouth, UK, and was meant to follow 19th-century  cargo ships’ route. Typically departs in Europe in October, has nine or ten legs with in-port races at many stopover cities, and is tens-of-thousands kilometres long.

Sailors compete in heavy weather with temperature variations from -5 to 40 °C . There is no prize money, but the team who is the fastest in the circumnavigation gets one award, and the other one goes to the team with the most points within in-port races. Competing and finishing the race is, surely, a lifetime achievement .

I’m wondering what is the biggest and expensive regatta in history…

Dear Alexander,

I would say the Volvo Ocean Race, since the regatta lasts for nine months and yachts are sailing around the globe. From the logistics and sponsors point of view it is the most expensive regatta.

Thank you, Bruno!

Types of Sailing Yachts Used in Racing

Types of Sailing Yachts Used in Racing

Monohull yachts are the most common type of sailing yacht used in racing. They are characterized by having a single hull, which makes them more stable in rough seas. Monohulls come in various sizes, from small dinghies to large racing yachts. They are designed to be fast and agile, focusing on speed and performance. Monohulls are typically sailed with a crew of several people, including a skipper, tactician, and crew members.

Multihull yachts, also known as catamarans or trimarans , are becoming increasingly popular in racing. They are characterized by having two or three hulls, which makes them more stable and faster than monohulls. Multihulls are designed to be fast and agile, focusing on speed and performance. They are typically sailed with a smaller crew than monohulls, as they are easier to handle. Multihulls are also more comfortable and spacious than monohulls, making them a popular choice for cruising.

Supermaxis are the largest and most powerful racing yachts in the world. They are characterized by their size, speed, and luxury. Supermaxis are typically over 100 feet long and can reach speeds of up to 40 knots. They are designed to be fast and powerful, focusing on speed and performance. Supermaxis are typically sailed with a large crew, including professional sailors and experienced amateurs. They are also equipped with the latest technology and equipment, making them some of the most advanced racing yachts in the world.

Race Formats and Courses

Race Formats and Courses

Sailing yacht races come in different formats, each with its own rules and regulations. The most common race formats include fleet racing, match racing, coastal, and offshore races.

Fleet Racing

Fleet racing involves a group of boats racing against each other on a set course. The boats start at the same time, and the winner is the boat that crosses the finish line first. Fleet racing is the most common type of sailing race, and it’s what most people think of when they hear the term “sailing race.”

Match Racing

Match racing involves two boats racing against each other in a series of races. The boats start at the same time, and the winner is the boat that crosses the finish line first. Match racing is a tactical race, and it’s all about outsmarting the other boat. The boats must follow strict rules, and penalties are given for breaking them.

Coastal and Offshore

Coastal and offshore races involve boats racing along a set course that takes them along the coast or out to sea. These races can last for several days, and the boats must be self-sufficient, carrying all the food, water, and equipment they need for the duration of the race. Coastal and offshore races are challenging, and they test the endurance and skill of the sailors.

In fleet racing , the boats are usually divided into classes based on their size and speed. The courses are set up to test the boats’ speed, maneuverability, and crew’s skill. In match racing, the boats are usually of similar size and speed, and the courses are set up to test the sailors’ tactical skills.

Coastal and offshore races can have different courses, depending on the race’s location and duration. Some races may have a set course that takes the boats along the coast, while others may have a course that takes the boats out to sea and back. The courses can be challenging, and the sailors must be prepared for all types of weather and sea conditions.

Overall, sailing yacht races are exciting events that test the sailors’ skills and endurance. Whether it’s fleet racing, match racing, coastal, or offshore races, each format has its own challenges and rewards.

Technological Advances in Yacht Racing

Technological Advances in Yacht Racing

Design and Materials

Technological advances in yacht racing have revolutionized the sport, particularly in the area of design and materials. Modern yacht designs now incorporate advanced materials such as carbon fiber, which is both lightweight and strong. This allows for faster and more agile boats that are better able to handle the high speeds and rough waters of yacht racing.

In addition to carbon fiber, other advanced materials such as Kevlar and titanium are also used in yacht construction. These materials are not only strong and lightweight, but they also offer superior resistance to corrosion and other forms of wear and tear.

Navigation and Communication Systems

Another area where technological advances have had a significant impact on yacht racing is navigation and communication systems. GPS technology, for example, has made it possible for sailors to navigate more accurately and efficiently, allowing them to plot their course with greater precision and avoid hazards such as rocks and other obstacles.

In addition to GPS, other advanced navigation and communication systems such as radar and sonar are also commonly used in yacht racing. These systems allow sailors to detect other boats, as well as obstacles such as buoys and rocks, from a distance, giving them more time to react and avoid collisions.

Overall, the technological advances in yacht racing have made the sport faster, safer, and more exciting than ever before. With continued innovation and development, we will likely see even more advances in the future, further pushing the limits of what is possible in this thrilling sport.

Sailing Yacht Race Regulations and Safety

Sailing Yacht Race Regulations and Safety

International Racing Rules

Sailing yacht races are governed by a set of international rules and regulations that ensure fair play and safety. The International Sailing Federation (ISAF) publishes the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) , which are updated every four years. The rules cover everything from boat design and construction to crew eligibility and conduct during races.

One of the most important rules is the right of way. Boats that are on a starboard tack (wind coming from the right side) have the right of way over boats on a port tack (wind coming from the left side). Boats must also give way to boats that are overtaking them.

Another important rule is the penalty system. Boats that break a rule must take a penalty, which can be a time penalty or a penalty turn. Failure to take a penalty can result in disqualification.

Safety Equipment Requirements

Safety is a top priority in sailing yacht races, and all boats must comply with safety equipment requirements. These requirements vary depending on the race and the location, but some common safety equipment includes life jackets, harnesses, flares, and fire extinguishers.

All boats must also carry a VHF radio and a GPS device. The VHF radio is used to communicate with other boats and race officials, while the GPS device tracks the boat’s position and speed.

In addition to the required safety equipment, many sailors also carry additional safety gear, such as first aid kits, emergency beacons, and satellite phones. It is important to note that safety equipment requirements may change depending on the weather and sea conditions, so sailors must always be prepared for the unexpected.

Overall, sailing yacht races are exciting and challenging events that require skill, accuracy, and knowledge of rules and regulations. By following the international racing rules and complying with safety equipment requirements, sailors can enjoy the thrill of the race while ensuring their safety and the safety of their crew.

Training and Crew Preparation

Preparing for a sailing yacht race requires a great deal of physical and mental preparation. The crew must be in top physical condition to handle the rigors of the race. They must also be mentally prepared to handle the stress and pressure of the competition.

Physical Conditioning

Physical conditioning is crucial for the crew to perform at their best during the race. Sailing requires a combination of strength, endurance, and agility. The crew must be able to handle the physical demands of the race, including hoisting sails, trimming lines, and steering the boat.

To prepare for the race, the crew should engage in a regular exercise routine that includes cardiovascular training, strength training, and flexibility exercises. They should also focus on building endurance through long-distance running, swimming, or cycling.

Teamwork and Roles

In addition to physical conditioning, teamwork, and roles are essential for a successful yacht race. Each crew member must understand their role on the boat and work together seamlessly to achieve the best possible outcome.

The crew should practice working together in various scenarios, including tacking, jibing, and sail changes. They should also practice emergency drills, such as man overboard, to ensure that everyone knows what to do in case of an emergency.

Clear communication is also critical for a successful yacht race. The crew should establish a communication plan and practice using it during training sessions. This will help ensure that everyone is on the same page and can work together effectively during the race.

Overall, training and crew preparation are crucial for a successful sailing yacht race. The crew must be physically and mentally prepared to handle the demands of the race and work together seamlessly to achieve the best possible outcome.

Maxi Racing to the Max

  • By Kimball Livingston
  • February 21, 2023

Maxi fleet race in St. Tropez

Maxi racing in the Med is hot. Call it a lesson in the value of getting your act together. The game has grown and changed dramatically—and deliberately—with fleets of 50 as the new normal. Ten years ago, none of this was ensured. The secretary general of the International Maxi Association, Andrew McIrvine, tells us, “Rapid change was needed, or it was going to just die.”

How it didn’t “just die” is a story worth telling, and we lean on McIrvine for that. “The International Maxi Association was originally a social club for the owners of 80-footers. That generation was going out as I was invited in,” he says. “The racing had categories that were impossible to define, so people were always gaming it. What’s a racer-cruiser versus a cruiser-racer? And could we ever have effective class splits based on hull length?”

The answer to that, as proven, is no he says. “The categories are now performance-defined, using a single-number IRC rule that includes an accurate weight measurement, not a calculated weight. We photograph the interiors so we know who’s stripping them out. The database includes 155 boats, and it has checks on people who fly too close to the rules. That gives other people the confidence to come out and race.”

The 2023 Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge offers a series of six events, wrapping up in August with the Palermo-Montecarlo Race. That’s 500 miles from Sicily to the Champagne at Yacht Club de Monaco—not to forget the fly-through gate at Porto Cervo along the way and the option of leaving Corsica to port or to starboard. It’s a sporty race in a sporty calendar.

“I truly believe the IMA has made a difference. We’ve attracted a new, younger membership. We’ve added events, and the compass has expanded from the Med to the Caribbean . Whereas we used to have a big mini-maxi contingent and not many boats 80 to 100 feet, in 2022 we suddenly had 12 of the 80- to 100-foot maxis racing, and racing on proper terms. At least two of the current owners are building new boats, which I believe is the sign of a healthy class.

“Then there are the Maxi 72s that have all been modified outside the box they were designed for, but they still race together. They’re more optimized than the other boats, so no one outside their group wants to race against them—they’re a threat—but we can usually give them their own sandbox to play in.”’

And what of the Wallys that seems to have disappeared?

“We gave that up. Wallys come in different sizes, different speeds. I can’t think of a single case of twin Wallys. Now they’ve rejoined according to their ratings, and I think, frankly, the Wally era is over. Luca Bassani’s success with Wallys is such that all designers have copied his concept. When he started, big race boats were neither ergonomic nor pretty, and the decks were bristling with winches. If you go aboard any boat now, it looks like a Wally.

“You could also go the way of Rambler and Comanche, where you pay more and more money to be more and more uncomfortable. Down below, you’re sitting in a carbon-black hole (black because paint adds weight) beside an engine that runs to power the canting keel and the winches. On deck—and it’s true with the Maxi 72s—you find they are exhausting boats to sail because they’re fast upwind at steep angles only. They’re on the edges of the hull to keep the wetted surface to a minimum. The hulls are so wide at the stern, all the crew is hiked hard at the aft end of the boat. And then, in a tack, you’re going from 45 degrees to 45 degrees, and if you don’t get it right running across the deck, you’re in trouble. On a clean deck, there’s nothing to grab on to.”

Placing itself somewhere in between the extremes of the grand-prix set and the leaning cruisers, Nautor has a new ClubSwan 80 it’s touting as a one-design class. Loro Piana brought Hull No. 1 to the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup last year at Porto Cervo, and the boat performed well. Weighing the odds of developing a successful one-design, it’s worth remembering that the ClubSwan 50 had its skeptics, who were proven wrong. But the 80 is a take-no-prisoners statement. It’s a major turn for a company whose classic racing events feature boats with furniture. Now we’re talking all carbon with a canting keel, a tacking daggerboard, push-button controls, twin rudders, design by Juan K, and construction in Italy by Persico—very fashion-forward. I’m sure you had a look at that boat.

“It’s a fascinating project, and it looks extreme, but it has, theoretically, cruising potential,” McIrvine says. “Inside, it’s all black carbon—artfully crafted—accented with strips of mahogany veneer. No furniture, but you have the option of adding interior modules for cruising. And we shouldn’t overlook the carbon-fiber bidet in the owner’s head.”

Clearly, Nautor thinks the IMA has a good thing going, and it wants a bigger piece of it. Beyond rational class definitions, one very important thing is resonating, McIrvine says. The owners are driving.

“Our rule is critical, and we are strict about imposing it, with rest breaks allowed,” he says. “Generally, it takes a lifetime to amass the wealth to race a big boat. By the end of a day race, most owners are exhausted. Which is not to say that amateur drivers are on their own. An astonishing number of names you know show up to whisper, ‘A little higher, sir, a little lower.’ That keeps the standards high, and it’s a reminder that being a pro sailor is a dodgy profession. There are only 10 TP52s in the Med, for example, only nine SailGP teams in the world and five America’s Cup teams. However, we don’t restrict driving in the superyacht group at all.”

The other boat debuting at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup was FlyingNikka , which raised the concern of foiling monohulls threatening the order. “ Nikka showed that she can sail in the fleet safely, so at St. Tropez we put her in a class where her rating was absurd. The boat would do 35 knots in the right conditions, but they couldn’t keep her on foils going upwind. Tacks were agonizingly slow. What Roberto Lacorte is looking for is line honors in longer races.”

The venues where maxis can and now gather are also a draw. The Caribbean was the inevitable expansion opportunity beyond the Med, where it’s obvious that people like to go to St. Tropez, Capri, Sorrento, Giraglia and so on. Neither coast of the United States can accommodate such a fleet.

“Water depth is a huge challenge for race committees,” McIrvine says. “A lot of the Bay of Naples is 1,200 to 1,500 feet deep. Off St. Tropez it’s much, much deeper. We’re using MarkSetBot, which is promising. It’s not 100 percent reliable, but an upside beyond remote control is that you can’t wrap your keel around an anchor line because there is no anchor line [on a GPS‑directed robot mark].

“Our people are selective about where they choose to race. One owner told me it costs him $750,000 to take his boat, team and containers to Porto Cervo for five days. No one wants to spend that kind of money on a badly run regatta, so it’s a conservative bunch.

“The IMA has a small board of directors backed up by a dynamic, insightful team. IMA costs are supported by membership subscription except for Rolex, which has been fantastic. When I started with the IMA, the Rolex people told me, ‘We’ve been giving you money, but your people just put it in the bank.’ I said, ‘I’m sure I can fix that,’ and I have. There is a lot of travel now, a much more glam yearbook, a lot of publicity. About half the boats racing last year were flying the IMA flag.”

So, everything is coming up roses? “There are still supply-chain issues around securing building materials. Outside of maxi racing, the 30- to 40-foot range is falling off a cliff, except for shorthanded distance racing. Looking ahead, we still don’t know if we are in a recession or a hiccup, but in previous recessions, maxi racing has gone on, looking good for two or three years longer than you might expect. Then the boats stay on the dock.”

A LOOK AT THE WORLD’S 3 BIGGEST YACHT RACES

Ocean thrills – a look at the world’s 3 biggest yacht races.

For some, embarking on a leisurely yacht cruise is the epitome of relaxation. For others, setting out on an ocean voyage is an epic, adrenaline-fuelled adventure, a ferocious match and an ultimate battle of will, endurance – and survival.

Join us as we take a look at the mechanics and history of 3 of the world’s biggest yacht races.

WORLD’S BIGGEST YACHT RACE #1 – VENDÉE GLOBE

1_Vendee-Globe

24 000 nautical miles of giant waves, extreme temperatures and gale-force winds, uninterrupted and completely alone. The Vendée Globe yacht race concept is easy to understand, but completing this legendary ocean trial is no easy feat.

Also known as “the Everest of the sea”, the Vendée Globe yacht race is the ultimate ocean endurance test. The quest? Circumnavigating the globe by yacht, completely unassisted.

Named for the Département of Vendée in France (where the race begins and ends), the Vendée Globe was founded by Madagascar-born French deep-sea diver and yachtsman Philippe Jeantot in 1989. Since 1992, this world-famous round-the-world yacht race has taken place every four years.

The Vendée Globe is infamous for being an extreme and brutal quest of endurance and the ultimate ocean-racing battle. It takes place from November to February, placing contestants in the Southern Ocean during the austral summer.

Current Vendée Globe title holder : Yannick Bestaven, French skipper of Maître Coq IV won the 9th edition of the Vendée Globe yacht race in 2021.

2_Last_Fun_Fact

VENDÉE GLOBE YACHT RACE FUN FACT #1

To date, 167 contenders have braved the Vendée Globe. Of these, only 89 have managed to complete this punishing yacht race.

VENDÉE GLOBE YACHT RACE FUN FACT #2

Only one sailor has completed the Vendée Globe twice: Michel Desjoyeaux, in 2001 and 2009.

VENDÉE GLOBE YACHT RACE FUN FACT #3

In this yacht race, no one apart from the skipper is allowed aboard, the only exception being when a fellow competitor requires rescuing. This has happened twice in the race’s history. In the third Vendée Globe yacht race in 1996/1997, Brit Pete Goss rescued Frenchman Raphael Dinelli in the Southern Ocean. In 2009, Frenchman Vincent Riou saved his fellow countryman Jean le Cam after he capsized near Cape Horn, Chile.

WORLD’S BIGGEST YACHT RACE #2 – THE AMERICA’S CUP

3_Americas-Cup

Affectionately known as the Auld Mug, The America’s Cup is the world’s oldest consecutive sport and sailing event. Considered the pinnacle of yacht racing, this world-famous trophy is awarded every four years.

A best-of-13-race series, in America's Cup, the title defender yacht club faces only one challenger. The first yacht-club team to score a certain number of points is crowned the winner to become the prestigious title's newest defender. This sort of match racing requires years of preparation, millions of dollars – and very specific yacht-racing skills. It not only involves aggressive racing tactics; it also requires competitors to use the rules to put their opponents at a disadvantage to be victorious.

First awarded back in 1851 by the Royal Yacht Squadron for a sailing race around the UK’s Isle of Wight (the race was won by a schooner named America), the trophy was first known as the RYS £100 Cup. It was later renamed after the yacht which won the first race and donated to the New York Yacht Club. After that, The America’s Cup was available for perpetual international competition.

This prestigious yacht race attracts not only the world's top sailors and yacht designers but also wealthy sponsors and entrepreneurs. Taking part in The America's Cup is extremely expensive and requires strong fundraising and management skills. These days, taking part in this yacht race can easily cost more than $100 million.

The 2013 winner, Golden Gate Yacht Club from San Francisco, was said to have spent an estimated $300 million on taking part in the yacht race!

Current title holder : The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron won the 36th edition of The America's Cup. The yacht club successfully defended the title in March 2021 in an AC75 foiling monohull called Te Rehutai.

4_Last_Fact

THE AMERICA'S CUP YACHT RACE FUN FACT #1

The America’s Cup yacht race is the oldest trophy in international sport. It predates the modern Olympic Games by 45 years.

THE AMERICA'S CUP YACHT RACE FUN FACT #2

Since the race’s inception in 1851, the United States embarked on what became the longest winning streak in the entire history of sport! The USA defended the trophy 24 times for a 132-year winning stretch from 1870 until 1983, when the Royal Perth Yacht Club’s Australia II took the trophy from the Americans.

THE AMERICA'S CUP YACHT RACE FUN FACT #3

The America’s Cup has fascinated royalty and industry leaders throughout history. From Australian real estate and brewing mogul Alan Bond to Irish-Scottish tea merchant Sir Thomas Lipton, the Aga Khan, US media mogul Ted Turner and tycoon Harold S. Vanderbilt, the yacht race has attracted numerous famous sponsors – and competitors.

WORLD’S BIGGEST YACHT RACE #3 – THE OCEAN RACE

5_Ocean_Race

Widely regarded as the toughest test in all of team sports, The Ocean Race is another round-the-world yacht race, held every 3 or 4 years since its 1973 inception. To date, there have been 12 editions of this brutal contest, with a combined 167 boats from 43 countries taking part.

Infamous for being one of sailing’s biggest circumnavigational challenges, The Ocean Race’s route changes with every race, including various ports of call. Competitors usually depart Europe in October to arrive at their final destination about nine months later, having covered around 39 000 nautical miles.

Initially named the Whitbread Round the World Race (after British brewing company Whitbread who sponsored the first race), it was christened The Volvo Ocean Race after the Swedish automobile manufacturer became the race’s sponsor in 2001.

The marathon ocean trial was renamed The Ocean Race in 2019. Recent editions of The Ocean Race had either 9 or 10 legs, with in-port races taking place in several of the stopover cities.

Each Ocean Race entry has a sailing crew racing round the clock – on certain legs, for more than 20 days at a time. Some of the trials these sailing crews face during their voyages include extreme temperatures varying from -5 to 40 °C, as well as treacherous sea conditions and intense fatigue.

Since the 2008-2009 edition of The Ocean Race, each competing yacht also has a dedicated media crew member aboard. This On-board Reporter (OBR) does not assist with sailing efforts, instead sending video and images to The Ocean Race headquarters via satellite – often from the middle of the ocean. Currently, the number of crew per competing yacht ranges between 7 and 10, depending on the gender ratio.

Interestingly, the Netherlands is the only country to have raked in three The Ocean Race victories, back-to-back in 1977-78 and 1981-82, and then again in 2005-6.

Current title holder : The 2017-18 Volvo Ocean Race was won by Dongfeng Race Team, a Chinese-sponsored Volvo Ocean 65 yacht. She had a crew of 14 and was skippered by Frenchman Charles Caudrelier.

6_Last_Fact-1

THE OCEAN RACE FUN FACT #1

In the 2008-2009 instalment of The Ocean Race, the route was changed from previous years to include stops in Asia and India for the first time. This yacht race reached a cumulative television audience of 2 billion people around the globe!

THE OCEAN RACE FUN FACT #2

Harrowing as it may be, winning the Ocean Race will not bag competitors any cash prize. The accomplishment of taking part in – and completing – the race is said to be a sufficient award in itself.

THE OCEAN RACE FUN FACT #3

Crews taking part in this yacht race mostly rely on freeze-dried foods for nourishment, resulting in a lighter – and faster – vessel. For the same reason, crew members will often only take one change of clothes with them on their voyage.

Famous yacht races and luxury regattas

Published on October 2nd, 2023 by Editor -->

The old adage – “Opinions are like assholes; everybody has one and they usually stink” – may apply in this report by Prestige, the ( according to them ) online lifestyle media of choice for the affluent and influential as well as among high-flying corporate leaders, the country’s most eminent personalities, and Asia’s social elite:

Whether you’re a sailor looking for your next yacht racing adventure or a spectator hoping to soak up the exclusive atmosphere of a luxury superyacht regatta, we take a look at the most famous yacht races in the world you should be keeping tabs on.

Watching one of the world’s top yacht races is how many seasoned sailors have first become interested in the sport of sailing. A display of skill, style, and perseverance, significant sailing events take place in major yachting hubs around the world every month of the year. And every three to four years, yachting enthusiasts can gear up to watch extreme around-the-world regattas such as the Vendèe Globe or The Ocean Race.

The top sailing race in the world is currently considered the America’s Cup, a prestigious yacht race begun in 1851 and raced on AC75 foiling boats. But there’s also plenty of traditional sailing events to capture audiences of all inclinations, such as the Boxing Day Sydney Hobart yacht race, which involves sloops and cutters sailing along the sun-kissed shorelines of Australia, or exclusive regattas raced on luxury mega yachts, such as the St Barth’s Bucket.

Regional Sailboat Races in the USA

By: Zeke Quezada, ASA Destinations , Sailing Races

Let’s set sail into the thrilling world of regional sailboat races! These competitions offer a unique and exciting twist on the traditional sailing experience.

Regional races center around sailboats vying for supremacy in specific corners of the world, be it a coastal paradise or a cluster of enchanting islands. These events serve as a rallying point for local racers, as sailors hailing from nearby towns and yacht clubs come together to showcase their skills.

What’s particularly enticing about regional races is their inclusivity. Whether you’re piloting a nimble dinghy or commanding a majestic yacht, these races often welcome boats of all types and sailors of all levels. Whether you’re a seasoned sea veteran or a novice setting sail for the first time, there’s a class tailored to your needs at most of these local sailing races.

It’s not all about the competition! Regional races transform into grand sailing events, where communities burst to life for multiple days of festivities while showcasing their local flavor. Sailors gather, forge new friendships, and revel in their shared passion for this incredible sport.

Moreover, these races often offer affordable entry fees, ensuring accessibility to aspiring racers of all backgrounds. Some races may be shorter and less arduous than epic ocean crossings, making them ideal for sailors looking to refine their skills. Regional sailboat races are all about honoring the sport of sailing and the remarkable community it nurtures.

Queensland local government election results show several incumbent mayors face 'kicking' from voters

Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill

A mood for change has swept through regional Queensland, with voters punishing several incumbent mayors in major cities who are fighting to hold onto their jobs.

The long-time mayor of Townsville, Jenny Hill, is battling to save her political career after a challenge from local businessman Troy Thompson.

With almost 70 per cent of the vote counted, Ms Hill is trailing Mr Thompson 43.71 per cent to 46.19 per cent on the first preference vote.

The third candidate, nurse Harry Patel, has received just over 10 per cent of the first preference vote.

Mayors in Cairns, Bundaberg, Mackay,  the Southern Downs and Mount Isa are also facing tough times and, in some cases, are losing the battle to hold on to their jobs.

Voters dissatisfied

Griffith University political analyst Paul Williams said there appeared to be a mood for change across some, but not all, regional parts of the state.

"The only indicator that we might have to what voters might be thinking in changing local government representatives, as any reason why voters want to change incumbents, is general dissatisfaction," Associate Professor Williams said.

"So we know that voters, particularly in regional Queensland are unhappy with a range of issues.

He said cost of living was the biggest issue, followed by youth crime.

"So if the local voters feel politicians aren't doing enough about youth crime, if politicians aren't doing enough about cost of living, they will kick the incumbent at the first opportunity," he said.

"And the first opportunity in this occasion is a local government election in regional Queensland."

He said that was the case even if the level of government involved didn't have oversight over that issue.

State election warning

Associate Professor Williams said the results in areas such as Townsville and Cairns would be a worry for the Labor state government, which is looking to hold onto those seats at October's State Election.

He said Labor members and candidates in the regions would feel the mood for change more than others.

"Just because voters have kicked incumbents in regional Queensland, particularly in the provisional cities, doesn't mean they're going to kick LNP candidates, far from it," he said.

In Townsville, neither Mr Thompson nor Cr Hill, who has been mayor since 2012, has claimed victory.

A man looks at the camera

Mr Thompson said he would be closely monitoring the results today.

"I won't say I'm comfortable at all I'm just at the point where we wait with caution and see how we go," Mr Thompson said.

"There's still 45,000 votes to come in and also the preferences."

Mr Thompson, who is reported to have previously sought preselection with One Nation but is currently not a registered member of the party, ran on a rate freeze and tough-on-crime platform.

Crime, cost of living key issues

High crime rates in the city and the cost of living were two of the key issues voters raised at the polling booth.

"Just fix up the crime around Townsville make it a better place for all of us," one voter told the ABC.

"Cost of living … that is a lot, it's expensive."

Another voter, Grace Bryce, said that her while crime was an issue, road conditions and access to parks were also important.

The tough results for Cr Hill come after she was found not guilty in 2021 of driving without due care and attention in a crash that claimed the life of a 33-year-old motorcyclist.

The crash occurred in January 2020, in the months leading up to the previous council election.

She is one of many incumbent mayors across regional Queensland facing a strong challenge as counting continues from Saturday's elections.

In Bundaberg, incumbent Jack Dempsey, who in 2022 unsuccessfully ran for federal parliament, is trailing challenger Helen Blackburn.

Ms Blackburn, with 71 per cent of the vote counted, has just over 57 per cent of the first preference vote, while Mr Dempsey has just over 32 per cent.

Cr Dempsey took to Facebook on Sunday afternoon to thank people for their encouragement and support over the past eight years.

"It was a pleasure and a privilege to serve as mayor of the beautiful Bundaberg Region," the post said.

A woman looks at the camera

Ms Blackburn said the election results showed a mandate for transparency and accountability.

"I'm feeling very confident with the election results, that the people of the Bundaberg region have decided that what they are after is change," she said.

Cairns Mayor Terry James is trailing challenger Amy Eden, who has 31 per cent of the first preference vote to his 22 per cent – with 55 per cent of the vote counted.

Ms Eden said she was feeling "buoyed" by the results.

A man with a blue polo stands on the esplanade in Cairns.

Mackay Mayor Greg Williamson is currently leading the first preference count, receiving 42 per cent of the vote.

However, former rugby league player Steve Jackson is coming second with just over 38 per cent of the first preference vote, while councillor Laurence Bonaventura has received just under 20 per cent.

"It's a very close race, there is no doubt about it," Cr Williamson said.

"All we can do now is wait.

"All of the pre-poll votes have got to be counted and there's a few thousand of those to go, and once that's determined then there's the distribution of the preferences."

Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen is trailing challengers Tom Sharp and Jeffrey McConnell.

He conceded defeat on Sunday afternoon.

On the Southern Downs, Mayor Vic Pennisi is behind challenger Melissa Hamilton.

Ms Hamilton said the votes were showing an appetite for change.

"If the voting trends continue then I am ready to lead a new council that works together to get things done for all of our wonderful communities, and I'm excited by the opportunities for our region," she said.

Incumbent mayors in the Cassowary Coast, Aurukun, Burdekin, Cherbourg, North Burnett, Charters Towers, Mornginton Shire, Wujal Wujal and Maranoa were also under pressure as counting continued.

An 'anti-incumbency trend'

Queensland University of Technology Associate Professor John Mickel, a former speaker of Queensland's Legislative Assembly, said there had been an "anti-incumbency trend" across many parts of regional Queensland.

"It was profound in Bundaberg and the Scenic Rim. There is evidence of it in Mackay, and it seems to be there in Townsville as well," he said.

"In the absence of exit polling, it's hard to know why the trend is there.

"But it seems to be part of a story this time in regional Queensland."

Three men look at a camera outside a polling booth

Professor Mickel said local government elections in Queensland worked on an optional preferential voting model – where voters just had to put a 1 next to their candidate of choice.

He said the trend across previous elections showed voters generally didn't preference other candidates, so those who were leading in the first preference count tended to win.

"There might be some exchange of preferences, but not enough to overhaul anybody," he said.

"A lot of people are happy just to put one because they know that person."

But he said while there were these tight races in some areas, such as Gladstone and smaller regions like Goondiwindi, there had been a trend of some mayors running unopposed.

"It's a tale of Queensland in a way, there's so much regionalism," he said.

Some candidates confident

In Rockhampton, Mayor Tony Williams said he felt confident he would retain his role for another term.

Mr Williams is leading the count with 68 per cent of first preference votes, and around 80 per cent of the votes have been counted.

"There is plenty of opportunity coming up for our region over the next decade, and I think now is a great time to take advantage of that," Mr Williams said.

Outgoing Member for Dawson George Christensen in front of a brick wall

Former federal MP George Christensen looks set to return to politics as vote counting continues in the Mackay councillor race.

Mr Christensen is a member of Steve Jackson's 'Jacko's Team' grouping and is currently coming second in the race for one of 10 councillor positions — but only a small number of votes have been counted so far.

In recent days, Mr Christensen, now a member of One Nation, has been running on an anti-woke platform, slamming a theatre event for kids at the council-owned events centre, as it features drag queens.

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.
