We had a great time on the Sea Reina private charter! Our family of four adults and two kids-the boat was super spacious. Captain Scott brought us to 2 killer snorkeling areas, and then showed us all the surf breaks on the north shore of Rincon. His wife even made us lunch, which was an extra bonus.🤙 highly recommend this charter!

We had an amazing time sailing around the coast and watching the sunset. Capt. Brian and Shane were a fantastic crew. The drinks were fabulous. DJ Brian brought his A Game with the playlist and whale facts. Shane’s snacks and service were top notch. The views were amazing. We can’t wait to come back next year and do it again! Thanks for a fabulous night!

Incredible experience! The crew is great and the food is fantastic. Charted complete catamaran for my daughter’s 16th birthday. She and her guests loved it. Rincón’s coast and beaches are beautiful. Geraldine was so helpful with the details and her crew is outstanding. 100% recommended.

Take a Sailing Cruise on the Katarina

Katarina is sailing again! Make plans to join them on a sail!

Sailing is such a relaxing experience. It is quiet and breezy, and it gives you a different view of places. Katarina Sail Charters is the only sailboat tour that goes out of the Rincón area. They offer a couple tours per day, allowing you to get out on the water and experience Rincón from the ocean side. See where the winds take you … to great views of the lighthouse and beyond, maybe to check out the surfers and the large swells, watching for whales and other marine animals, to great snorkel spots, or just hanging around to relax and watch the beautiful show the sun displays as it sets for the evening.

Katarina Sail Charters is located in at the Black Eagle Marina in Rincón, on the west coast of Puerto Rico (about 2.5 hours from San Juan). This town has a laid-back surfer vibe, and this sailing trip is an extension of that. It is all inclusive, so you can just step aboard, relax, and let someone bring you a drink or a snack as you enjoy being out on the water.

Katarina Sail Charters

Katarina Sail Charters offers a morning snorkel sail, and an afternoon sunset sail. We opted for the morning snorkel sail. The meeting place for these tours is at the benches on the beach at the Black Eagle Marina (really just a parking lot and boat ramp). You can see the sailboat anchored out in the cove. It is a catamaran, so it is very stable. They have a small skiff that they use to ferry you between the beach and sailboat. It requires a large step up to get into, but they crew helps you if needed.

Katarina Sail Charters

The sailboat is nice-sized and has plenty of places to sit, stand, lay down, and just gnerally get comfortable. You can move about the boat all the time that you’re on the water, so you get the best views, and can tan or stay out of the sun if you want. The Captain and crew were great. They coming around with a plate with a variety of fresh cut fruits, and offered juices, soda, and other drinks. All along the way, they told us about the sights we were seeing, and about all sorts of interesting things — life in Rincón, the sailing company, surf conditions, and different animals in the area. Don’t forget that whales come through in the winter!

Katarina Sail Charters

After about an hour of sailing, we headed to the snorkel spot. The Tres Palmas Marine reserve has good snorkeling, so that was our destination. Due to the protected nature of the marine reserve, they can’t just drop anchor anywhere they want, so we anchored just outside of the reserve. We jumped in and quickly found some nice stag horn corals, and beautiful purple and yellow sea fans. There were a number of fish around too, all different types. They supply the snorel gear needed , and they also have life vests and pool noodles if you want or need to use those. If you are new to snorkeling, they will give you some basic instruction. You are only in water about 6-8 feet deep at the boat, and you can swim closer to shore if you wanted. We snorkeled all over!

Katarina Sail Charters

After snorkeling, we got back on the boat and lunch we were offered lunch. It was a homemade chicken pasta salad, and a green salad. For beverages, they had rum punch (very tasty!), beer or pina coladas, water, juice, or soda. During this time, you could jump back in to snorkel some more, or just swim and enjoy the water, until the captain gave his last call and we had to set off back to the marina.

Other Things to Know

Though we didn’t do it, Katarina Sail Charters also offers a shorter sunset cruise, where you sail and/or motor around, see the sights, and catch the sunset. So beautiful and relaxing! That cruise generally departs around 4pm or 5pm. They supply snacks, hors d’oeuvres, and drinks (soda, juice, piña colada, rum punch, and local beer).

They take the sailboat out of the water during low (hurricane) season. During this time, they may be able to offer tours using their smaller boat. Check their web page for information about these options and to book!

Katarina Sail Charters

The price of the Snorkel Sail that we took is $85 for adults, and $42.50 for kids.

If you're happy, let them know it — Don't forget to tip your your bartender, tour guide or trip operator if you enjoyed yourself. Gratuities are appreciated and typically aren't included in the price they charge you.

They run these tours 7 days per week, in season. The Morning Snorkel Sail departs usually around 9:30am. Plan on arriving about 30 minutes early to do paperwork, etc.

The catamaran holds a maximum group of 18 people, plus 2 crew members. It has a large area that is shaded, and lots of open air areas to sit or lay down and sun bathe. There is also a marine head (toilet) on the boat if needed.

We went in the summer, so the sea was very calm. But it can get rough in the winter (that’s when the big-time surfing occurs). Even with the stable catamaran and the captain trying to get to the best spot, big waves make can make it rough going … so take Dramamine or something if you’re prone to sea-sickness.

Allow about 4 hours, start to finish, for this tour.

You can call Katarina Sail Charters at 787-823-7245 , or send them an email sailrinconpr@gmail.com , for more information.

A Superb Adventure in Fajardo, PR

"Great value! Beautiful day on the ocean with 2 stops - the first one more beach-oriented and a chance to practice snorkeling, the second at Tortuga Reef for in-depth snorkeling. The crew were wonderful and the lunch provided exceeded expectations - all fresh, and freshly-prepared sandwich fixings and salads. Even fresh fruit & veg. The free unlimited drinks are not very strong, but for $2, they'll add a shot of rum. Fins, masks and snorkels are provided, which simplifies logistics. We had a great time."

"We had a perfect day for snorkeling and a crew made the entire trip fun and exciting. Great lunch spread and delicious drink selection. Perfect trip for families of all ages. We would recommend the Spread Eagle II for anyone snorkeling out of Fajardo"

"At first I thought there were too many people on the boat but it worked out fine. We had a nice day. The small island where we first stopped had several other boats there. It would have been nice to have landed at a more private place. Same for the spot where we snorkeled. The water was beautiful. We saw some fish, Be sure to wear sun screen!"

"We had a fun day with the friendly and professional crew. Even though the snorkeling visibility was not great, the sailing was fun, the day was beautiful and the whole family enjoyed it. This is definitely a great idea for an outing with anyone from kids to grandparents. People who don't want to snorkel can beachcomb, swim, or just enjoy piña coladas on the catamaran. :)"

The Best Beaches in Puerto Rico for Your Next Vacay

P uerto Rico is a land of diverse geography and is considered a tropical paradise. Puerto Rico has a big stretch of coastline. The Caribbean island is well known for its white sand beaches, tropical weather and clear waters. Travelers can explore secluded coves or the most popular party beaches Puerto Rico has to offer. Some of the best beach activities for tourists include snorkeling, diving, surfing and paddle boarding. Visitors that just want to sit back, relax and sunbathe are also invited to simply sip on a fresh piña colada and watch the waves pass by.

Puerto Rico has year round tropical weather. This means that the best time of year to visit depends slightly on the changes in weather but factors in other things. Travelers should aim to travel to Puerto Rico during the dry season, so they do not have to deal with heavy rainfall during their beach vacation. Winter, which is technically around December to March, is the most ideal time for weather. During these months visitors can expect (relatively) low temperatures of about 70 to 80 degrees. Within that season, April and May are considered optimal months for beach stays since the temperatures are mild and tourist spots are less crowded.

To visit during the least busy season, travelers should aim for late summer and late fall. This is also the time when travel to Puerto Rico is the least expensive (accommodations, flights, food and excursions). These seasons have a disadvantage though, since this is hurricane season. Travelers may chance being caught in less than ideal weather conditions and putting themselves in unsafe conditions .

There are many beach options for travelers wanting to bask in the sun in Puerto Rico. Travelers wanting to enjoy a beach vacation in PR should assess their options based on the type of trip they’d like to have. So, we have taken a look at the best beaches in Puerto Rico and provided all the details travelers need to know.

Best Beaches Overall

For travelers that enjoy the communal nature of public beaches, there are plenty of options in Puerto Rico. The United States territory has over 200 beaches on the almost 300 mile span of coastline. These are the best beaches for tourist access.

Rincón

With over eight miles of coastline, Rincón beaches are readily available to tourists. These beaches are usually smaller and have clear blue waters. They are well known for being less developed and incredibly eye-catching. These pristine beaches have plenty to offer travelers. Some of the most popular activities at the many Rincón Beaches include snorkeling, power diving, sea shell collecting, surfing, kayaking, paddle boarding and swimming. Depending on the season and beach, some places may not be as safe for swimming. But overall, the Rincón Public Beach is a pretty good option.

Cabo Rojo is a municipality in Puerto Rico which has some of the best beaches. These beaches are located near a coastal town on the southwestern side of the island, so they are easily accessible. There are historic landmarks and unique landscapes in Cabo Rojo, so tourists will have plenty to do. The beaches of Cabo Rojo have clear waters, pink salt flats and stunning rock formations on the coast. Playa Buyé, Playa Sucia (or La Playuela) and Boquerón Beach are among some of the most popular beaches in the area.

Luquillo Beach is very popular due to its amenities and activities. It is incredibly accessible since it is named after a nearby town, which reflects in the occasional crowds. On weekends and in the summer travelers will notice the crowds, especially because this beach is beloved by locals and tourists alike. For access to the beach, travelers simply have to pay the entrance fee that costs around $4. For access to the showers and bathroom facilities, travelers will need to pay a small additional fee. The marine life at Luquillo Beach is unmatched. There are plenty of sea creatures to appreciate while sprawled out on this beach including the most prominent visitors, Leatherback and Hawksbill Sea Turtles. For beach adventurers, Luquillo Beach is a dream destination. Travelers that like a little adrenaline rush can enjoy snorkeling, paddle boarding, kitesurfing, kayaking and swimming on the beach.

Best Remote Beaches in Puerto Rico

These stunning beaches are the most intimate stretches along the coast. At these beaches, seclusion meets serenity. The crystal clear waters and warm white sands make these Puerto Rican beaches some of the most peaceful places for travelers to visit.

Culebrita

Playa Tortuga is a remote and uninhabited island of Culebrita. This archipelago of islands in the Caribbean Sea is located off the coast of Culebra, a larger island on the coast. Travelers can get there via seaplane or boat ride, but water taxis are much more common. After a short boat ride (which costs about $65 per person for a round trip including a hammock and snorkeling gear) from mainland Puerto Rico, travelers can enjoy this protected national wildlife refuge. The long crescent of Playa Tortuga is a common nesting ground for Green Sea Turtles and is even nicknamed Turtle Beach. It is also home to Faro Culebrita, the oldest operating lighthouse in the Caribbean which was built by the Spanish crown in 1886. This landmark is off limits for tourists but offers great photo opportunities. Since Culebrita is uninhabited, travelers should enjoy the serene beach during their day trip.

Icacos

This beach is on a tiny uninhabited island called Cayo Icacos off the coast of Fajardo but can also be easily reached from San Juan . This beach can only be reached by boat, so the majority of travelers opt to book catamaran day trips or water taxis. Something to note about this destination is that there is less shade available. There are not many palm trees, so the beach is best for swimming, snorkeling or sunbathing. There is an abandoned pier with plenty of marine life thriving there for snorkeling. This beach has some of the clearest waters off the east coast of Puerto Rico. Icacos Beach is best known for its snorkeling and diving opportunities but there are other leisurely beach activities. Most other travelers enjoy the beach for partying, listening to music and relaxing.

Culebra

Playa Punta Soldado is a secluded spot on the island of Culebra. It is an ideal option for travelers that want to relax and enjoy the ocean views. With its very pebbly beach, coral reefs and slightly rocky coast, it is not the best option for carefree swimming. It is best for travelers to wear swim shoes to protect themselves. There are no facilities or food options on this beach, so travelers should be prepared to pack everything they need for this day trip. Many travelers simply enjoy the solitude of the crystal clear waters at Punta Soldado, snorkel or dive.
