Million Pound Mega Yachts to lift the lid on Monaco show

A new Channel 4 documentary this weekend will feature exclusive footage of some of most luxurious mega yachts at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show

A new Channel 4 documentary will be going behind the scenes on some of the most exclusive superyachts to attend this year’s Monaco Yacht Show .

‘Million Pound Mega Yachts’ promises to explain why the billionaire owners of these luxurious vessels are constantly trying to outdo each other.

As the teaser video above reveals, the hour-long show will include an interview with Fulham FC owner Shahid Kahn, who owns the 95m Lurssen superyacht Kismet .

All the jet set clichés are correct and present, with Mr Kahn predictably stating: “If you have to ask what it costs, you probably can’t afford it.”

Also featured in the show is superyacht designer Andrew Winch, the man behind vessels such as Phoenix² , Slipstream , and Al-Mirqab .

Million Pound Mega Yachts is the latest project from producer/director Martin Hicks, whose previous credits include ‘The Call Centre’ on BBC Three, ITV1’s ‘Double Decker Driving School’ and ‘Prom Queen Divas’ for Channel 5.

The 1hr documentary will be screened on Channel 4 at 2000 on Sunday (November 15) and repeated on the same channel at 2315 on Monday November 16.

"I have a joke; if the rest of the world learns what it's like to live on a yacht like this, they're going to bring back the guillotine (laughs)"

You heard it right from the horses mouth. Bring back the guillotine.

What an infuriating watch. No one should be able to live like this. It's disgusting an unethical in every sense of the word. The documentary itself isn't great. It doesn't really have a point of view, isn't particularly well made, and abruptly ends and changes subject to the yacht workers in the last minutes. I found it completely bizarre to make a documentary about the 1%'s mega yacht lifestyle and opulence without mentioning the negative effects and how these yachts affect the world and people around them. I originally heard about the documentary and wanted to watch it based on a tweet I saw, wish I could find it now (it was years ago)

‘In Restless Dreams’ May Be the Definitive Paul Simon Documentary

In January 2019, Paul Simon awoke from a dream. Some voice in his head had informed him, deep within his REM cycle, that he was going to work on a project called “Seven Psalms.” The singer-songwriter behind “The Sound of Silence,” “A Bridge Over Troubled Waters,” “Love Me Like a Rock,” and several dozen other songs that have likely been part of the soundtrack of your life, willingly or unwillingly, had effectively been retired for several years. Music-wise, he had nothing on deck except for this lovely little riff he’d play on his acoustic guitar around his house in Wimberly, Texas. He had no idea what the phrase meant, or why he should be working on anything.

A prolific filmmaker who’s dabbled in everything from first-person docs to Dateline -style exposés, social-issue cinejournlism to portraits of artists (Sinatra, Hunter S. Thompson, James Brown), Alex Gibney is nothing if not an old pro at this kind of thing. He doesn’t have a style so much as modes, and thankfully, he’s stuck to a more straight-ahead profiler role here; the chronology may ping back and forth, but the focus remains steadfastly on the subject. Subtitled “The Music of Paul Simon,” In Restless Dreams also keeps its eyes on the output, threading in personal stuff primarily when it pertains to what was going on with Simon’s writing and recording. Does that mean we view, say, his whirlwind marriage to Carrie Fisher primarily through his recording of 1983’s Hearts and Bones ? Yes. Is there still ample opportunity to hear Simon talk shit about Art Garfunkel (and vice versa) over many years’ worth of vintage clips, interviews and televised bickering? Oh yes, indeed.

“Verse 2” stops in 1992, right after Simon drops The Rhythm of the Saints — it doesn’t skip past the six albums or the controversial Broadway production of The Capeman that separate that early ’90s triumph with Seven Psalms so much as ignore their existence entirely. Such conspicuous back-half omissions keep In Restless Dreams from merely being damn near the definitive Paul Simon documentary as opposed to the definitive one. Then again, Gibney isn’t trying to be comprehensive. It pays to remember that this project starts with Simon chasing a literal dream while battling injury (he lost his hearing in one ear near the start of recording, which has caused his singing style to change drastically), age and time. There’s a life’s worth of philosophical pursuit and artistry that went into finishing that album. The fact that we get to seeing it being made through the filter of that life, and how it’s brought him to this moment, only makes it that much more awe-inspiring.

The psychics in Look Into My Eyes claim to communicate with the departed, passing messages to their loved ones among the living. Whether that’s true or not must remain a matter of speculation, but one thing can be said with certainty: the documentary has passed into another world – from the snows of Sundance to the edges of the Øresund in Copenhagen.

Director Lana Wilson brought her film to CPH:DOX festival in the Danish capital for its international premiere.

Wilson said the film stemmed from her own impromptu psychic reading in 2016.

“It actually happened the day after Trump’s election. I was depressed, sad, horrified, really concerned about the future in the most literal sense,” she recalled. “I’d never been to a psychic before and I’d been filming election night in Atlantic City, and I was waiting that morning for my ride to go back to New York City where I’ve lived for 20 years. And I just saw a sign that said $5 psychic readings. And without even thinking, I walked in, and I pulled back this curtain… I sat down and immediately felt incredibly emotional and I had this sensation that I was looking in a mirror with this sudden clarity at my own heartbroken, devastated state. And that was really powerful to me. And then the psychic came in and gave me a reading and I felt comforted.”

The gift of the psychics in Look Into My Eyes isn’t to read tea leaves, tarot cards, palms, crystal balls, reveal the netherworld of the dead or peer into the future, but really to listen deeply and to observe.

“I would absolutely say they’re empaths,” Wilson said, adding that while they purport to “connect with dead people… I can’t tell you if dead grandma is in the room or not. I have no idea. We can’t all agree on what happens in the afterlife, if there is an afterlife. Those are not answers I have. But what I saw in the rooms was two people having a deep connection and either connecting to something outside of themselves or connecting in their imagination to something that was healing.”

One of the psychics in the documentary specializes in communing with animals – either pets that have crossed the rainbow bridge or have simply gone missing.

“There’s a lot of humor in the film in general. I hope people will laugh watching it. There’s a lot of wackiness and weirdness, and some of my favorite scenes are with the pet psychic,” Wilson said. “There’s someone who’s asking [the psychic] about his lizard, who a zookeeper has absconded to New Jersey with, and he has not heard from the lizard, who’s named Bobby Jr. And he wants to know, ‘Is my lizard happy and should I go to New Jersey and try to rescue the lizard?’ To my surprise, the psychic said no to both of those questions. It was not what the client wanted to hear. I found it very interesting because it was kind of an acknowledgement of what happens when you say goodbye to people, to relationships, you have to move on and let it go. But at the same time the emotional relationship, the connection, the impact that a person or an animal that’s gone still has on you is real.”

A24 is behind the documentary. Dogwoof has come on board to handle worldwide sales. The film made its international premiere Monday night at CPH:DOX and will screen again on Friday. The festival describes the March 22 showing as a “spiritual evening with a little peak into the future!”

The CPH:DOX program notes, “After the screening, you can dive even deeper into the spiritual universe when you can draw an oracle card with Annasophia in Big Bio’s cozy foyer and café and get help deciphering the cards. What might the future hold?”

For Wilson and the documentary, that future presumably includes theatrical distribution for Look Into My Eyes and, who knows (other than a psychic), maybe a successful awards run.
