Cracksman 20
Cracksman 20 is a 20 ′ 0 ″ / 6.1 m catamaran sailboat designed by Michael Henderson and built by Newbridge Boats Ltd. starting in 1963.
Rig and Sails
Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
A very early, (and advanced for its time) cruising catamaran. It is said that the original design (from an earlier builder) was appreciated more for its sailing performance than its interior amenities. In an effort to improve on the latter, the superstructure and other details underwent a number of changes over time. A Mk II version has a masthead rig. Pictured here is an earlier ‘day sailor’ version.

20' cracksman catamaran 'korky'.
18 comments:
Hello Bill, that is indeed a very good example of a Cracksman. I remember when they first hit the market. There's one currently for sale on e-bay, but she's in need of a lot of restoration.
Beauty is clearly in the eye of the beholder... :o)
Bill, I bought the 1979 for which you show the eBay US ad, dragged it across the colonies to its new home near Lake Mead, Nevada. Project boat, hence my question: Did you by any chance snap any interior pictures? My plans revolve around enlarging the cabin area to allow more accomodations, so I'm interested in any interior shots I can get a hold of. Thanks for posting the photos.
Well, Ken, I think you will have a lot of fun. The boat was not mine; therefore I was unable to gain access for photographing the interior. Cheers, Bill.
Hi there, I have just bought a Cracksman 20 Mk1 (fractional rig)...but the sails on it are wrong (from a Firefly so way too small)....does anyone know where I might find the correct sail dimensions for it? have been searching the web but so far no luck...
Mine carries the mast and sail from a Hobie 17 or 18, haven't pinned down which yet. Appears to be plenty big enough, haven't yet had the opportunity to confirm that. I have some brochure materials on the boat at home, I'll check tonight and see if sail dimensions are included. Once I go to a biplane sail configuration, I'll give you mine. Where are you located? Ken C.
Matt, You will need a total sail area of about 200 Sq ft. See the link to Sailboatdata.com for more information. Cheers, Bill.
Thanks Bill....any clues on Luff and foot lengths for the mainsail? (I can't take mas and boom measurement's until I am next down on the coast in a few week's time)
Hi Ken, sorry only just saw your post. Any info gratefully received; I am in the UK, and the boat is moored in South Devon in Salcombe harbour
Have you joined the Yahoo Cracksman group? Not real active anymore, but there's quite a bit of info on the site. I just looked, didn't see any measurements for luff and footer lengths. Since mine came with the Hobie 18 sail and mast I didn't go after the original measurements, just knew the Hobie had worked well for the prior owner. Try Yahoo site, some owners with original sail, may be able to answer you. Wind at your back, and all that stuff, Ken C.
Hi Ken, yes I did and amazingly was contacted by a very kind guy from North Devon who has converted his Mk1 to motor only and is going to give me an entire original rig and sail set. The kindness of some people truly knows no bounds! Cheers Matt
Wow, score one for Matt! Love to hear your reports, maybe you'll inspire me to get off my duff. Happy Cracksmaning (?) Ken C
I will post some pics when we get the 'new' rig and sails up, hopefully this weekend. One of my boys has set up a twitter page, facebook page and Instagram page so you can follow progress on those as well! https://twitter.com/hippychickboat https://www.facebook.com/HippyChickBoat (can't find the Instagram one) Or just Google 'hippychickboat' If you are on Twitter/Facebook etc please follow/like etc!
Just thought you might like to know we have continued restoring our Mk1 Cracksman 20 which seems to be adored by all who know her in Salcombe Harbour ("Look, it's HippyChick!" is the cry we hear so often when heading out of harbour for a sail) We have authentic Cracksman 20 sails now, after a bit of hunting and think next we need to have new rudders made (after one collapsed on us doing about ten knots off the South Devon coast!) We even managed to get the original nav lights going, despite the last owner having for no apparent reason, butchered the electrics! More pics and stuff on www.hippychickboat.co.uk
Hi Matt, Thanks for the update. You are obviously enjoying ownership, maintenance, sailing etc. It is heartening to hear that a 'classic', and now quite rare catamaran is being preserved and used. Cheers, Bill.
I'm doing up a Mk2 at the moment in the Solent, purchased a gutted one, so making a few unnecessary interior changes etc :)
Hi Lyndon, Great. I hope you will be able to get her back on the water and have a lot of fun with her. Cheers, Bill.
Hi Lyndon. We've just purchased a 1980 Mk2 cracksman. Has also had the interior stripped out. Would be good to connect & share ideas. Ours is in Perth.

I've just moved across from the dark side. I've finally had enough of this government's fiscal antics, so I've sold my beloved Northshore Ranger 36 footer motor boat and given up my mooring. So sorry, Southampton, that's a good chunk of income that'll be missing from your pubs, bars and hotels from now on - you know who to blame - and I'm just not going to spend double on fuel tax even if I could afford to. I don't want to give up boating altogether. I've been doing it since I was 10 and I'd like to keep something which will allow me to get out on the water at a less savage cost and I'm hoping someone can help me make a decision. I've been looking at some trailer/sailors, especially since Peter Poland's articles in PBO. I have had my eye on two kinds of boats. One is the Hunter Liberty, which seems to be a really pretty, innovative design. The other is the Cracksman Catamaran, which is also innovative and looks like fun. Both have some features which are a litle bit different, and both are trailerable. Can anyone tell me which is better or worse? I mean things like sailing performance, ease of handling, upwind ability, seakindliness, ease of launching/recovery, possible range away from home, durability and so on. I have just no experience of these boats, although I've many years of seagoing experience. Ideally I'd like a boat which can look after itself a bit, although I appreciate that, at the size of these boats (20 feet) they aren't going to cross oceans. Any help and wisdom would be really gratefully appreciated.
Never sailed a Liberty. There is at least one on Windermere and one on Derwent Water. I realise that doesn't help you re. seaworthiness, but the guy on Windermere was telling me as we drifted along in company that he had sold one and missed it so much he bought another. He did admit it's not terrific to windward. I was talking to the bloke on his on Derwent Water and he absolutely loved his as well. However if you think Windermere is restricted, you should see Derwent Water. Owners Club Have you looked Here?

Have you considered the Parker 21 or 235? Pretty good in the areas of sailing performance, ease of handling, upwind ability, seakindliness, ease of launching/recovery! There are some for sale - and more info - on the Parker Seal association website. And yes, I do have an interest - I've a Parker 21.
Thanks Telstar. To be honest, I liked the idea of the Liberty's unstayed masts and lack of rigging.
Thanks Lakesailor. I did do some sailing on Windermere some years ago. Couldn't find the exit. I sent off for the article - it was very complimentary, but not very detailed. I also looked at the owners site - the one for sale there has been sold.
Having done some trailer launch and recovery certainly the shallower draught the easier, and I would recomend guide bars to show where the trailer is for recovery and they can be marked to show the correct depth of water. One comment on the unstayed mast is how do you step it after trailing to your launch point, in fact having a good arrangement for raising the mast is vital. Another point on masts is the c of g changes when the mast is stepped and the slight nose weight on the trailer can become a tail weight with some one is on deck. I used to put a plastic oil drum under the stern whilst putting the mast up.

Have you contacted / joined the Trail Sail Association? Wealth of experience and knowledge. From first-hand knowledge I can heartily recommend Parker 21, Dehler 22 and Etap 22i.

It gets a bit bumpy and you have to get the mast down PDQ /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Peter Polands articles left me cold...only because he failed to mentiion MY boat the Dehler 22 or its big brother the 25, both excellent well made fast trailable yachts, though getting on a wee bit these days. My stormtroopers are camped on his doorstep as I write. Have you looked at a Swift 18. Very affordable and a doddle to trail, a small yacht that has the lines of a big yacht. Can be launched on little more than a damp rag. You can have a very presentable one for less than £5k. I'd always back a Parker of any description as they are excellent, but you need deeper pockets. £10-20k depending on model. Etaps seem very well made whenever I look at one. Also don't dismiss another excellent yacht Mr Poland omitted. The Pippin 20. An unpretentious but very spacious (for 20ft) family yacht with excellent build quality. Dead easy to trail. Note: The Parkers and the Pippin are made on my doorstep so I am biased, but they are very nicely turned out products. http://www.pippin-yachts.com/ Tim

Thanks - excellent advice. My choices were made from a position of great ignorance - I was really going on impressions from the articles and what I've seen around and about. I must say I share your opinion of Etaps though - I've seen two and they looked high quality. I'll see if I can have a look around the others that have been mentioned so far.

This is a Newbridge Cracksman Mk2 6 metre cruising catamaran. Alledgedly sleeps 4, but their word against mine. 2 adults and two kids more realistic. These boats are very versatile, in fact they were marketed as being strong enough to stick a big engine on the back and tow a skier, a sort of forerunner to theMacgregor!
