Interview: Yacht Club de Monaco Director Bernard D’Alessandri

yacht club monaco directeur

This year marks the 10 th anniversary of the Yacht Club of Monaco clubhouse and, as General Secretary and Managing Director Bernard D’Alessandri explained to Monaco Life , it’s been pivotal in the evolution of the Yacht Club of Monaco.

Bernard D’Alessandri has been at the helm of the Yacht Club of Monaco since 1976, over 48 years, and under his tenure as general secretary and managing director, the club moved to a new state-of-the-art premises. Since then, membership has increased exponentially, representing a myriad of nationalities.

Prince Rainier III created the Yacht Club of Monaco in 1953 and it has been presided over by Prince Albert II since 1984, when he gave it a new impetus. It is important to remember that the first regattas date from 1863; before the YCM, there was the Monaco Nautical Society, so the Principality has integrated the world of yachting for over 160 years, well over a century.

After the Yacht Club de Monaco’s 70 th  anniversary celebrations last year, festivities continue in 2024 with the commemoration of 10 years in the new clubhouse designed by Lord Foster, one of the most prominent architects in Great Britain. Once again, the calendar lives up to the ambitions of the collective ‘Monaco, Capital of  Advanced Yachting’ approach, initiated by YCM to position the Principality as a center of excellence in this sector. High-level sport, the environment, luxury yachting, and maritime heritage are again in the spotlight throughout the year.

Nicholas Monsarrat wisely said: “Sailors, with their built-in sense of order, service, and discipline, should really be running the world.” That is precisely how Bernard d’Alessandri has captained the Yacht Club of Monaco for almost five decades, plus his magnetism and charisma.

Monaco Life: What does this anniversary milestone mean to its members, yachting, and the Principality?

Bernard d’Alessandri: This 10th anniversary of the new clubhouse is significant, as we wanted to reflect the international ambitions of the Principality. The Yacht Club de Monaco has two primary missions. Firstly, it is a private club that brings together people who are passionate about the sea. It has 2,500 members representing 81 nationalities and aims to be a unique place to live. It is, therefore, responsible for organising numerous events exclusively for its members.

But the YCM also has a public service mission to promote the yachting destination. It is a driving force in the port and in raising Monaco’s international profile. It is a veritable showcase for yachting that is undergoing a fascinating transformation. Today, sustainability is the watchword. In line with HSH, Prince Albert II’s vision, “Proof must replace promise”: we must reinforce and quantify actions to promote them with facts and figures. Under a policy firmly focused on protecting the environment, and as part of the collective ‘Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting’ approach, the YCM is ramping up initiatives that underpin its commitment.

What are the added benefits of this impressive new building that became the centerpiece of the harbour?

The Club, open to the sea and Monaco, is an iconic structure at 43°44’15” north latitude and 7°25’40” east longitude. This ship-like building, inaugurated in 2014, boasts 5,000 m2 of interior space, 4,000 m2 of terraces, 204 meters long, a height of 22 meters, and six floors, allowing for the simultaneous hosting of various events.

YCM is committed to environmental protection through initiatives like the YCM Explorer Awards-La Belle Classe (21 st March 2024) and the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge (1 st to 16 th July 2024). The clubhouse reflects this commitment, built to Haute Qualité Environnementale HQE standards and consistently meeting ISO 14001 criteria since 2016.

Eco-friendly features include photovoltaic cells, energy-efficient LED lighting, adequate energy, heating, waste, and water management systems, a harbor water-recycling hydro cooling system, electric vehicle and boat charging points, and widespread photovoltaic and thermal solar panels. Recently, we added a plant to treat the Club’s pool water, further contributing to boat washing in the Sports Section. A temporary standalone hydrogen production station, a world premiere, has also been installed.

YCM also promotes individual eco-responsibility and raises awareness among yacht owners through the SEA Index, encouraging the reduction of CO2 emissions in yachting. Event organisation includes using dynamic buoys with electric motors, preserving the ecosystem, and electric boats for events and sailing courses.

Actively engaged in promoting individual eco-responsibility, YCM also raises awareness of yacht owners through the SEA Index, the first carbon footprint calculator to allow quick comparisons between superyachts over 25m, targeting objectives to reduce CO2 emissions in yachting with an incentive system for the most virtuous.

Event organisation is not left out. With the Club’s use of dynamic buoys equipped with an electric motor to position them remotely throughout a race, there is no need to anchor them to the seabed, which protects it, and a portable battery so it can run PC regattas autonomously in terms of energy. The use of semi-rigid electric boats for events and its many sailing courses completes the solutions now in place.

All these actions illustrate YCM’s ambitious, proactive vision of what being eco-responsible means today.

How did your work change when the MYC moved from its smaller, familiar quarters to the new state-of-the-art building?

To be honest, we weren’t very confident at the beginning, as it was a significant challenge to undertake. However, this new building quickly brought about substantial changes to our work, opening a world of possibilities. Firstly, this new spacious infrastructure allowed us to host and coordinate various events simultaneously, which was challenging in our former, more confined premises. The addition of Lord Foster’s signature boosted our international reputation. This yacht-shaped building showcased Monaco’s yachting prestige and the Yacht Club of Monaco, solidifying its status as a leading institution in the international yachting arena. Ultimately, this building marked a pivotal milestone in the evolution of the Yacht Club of Monaco.

yacht club monaco directeur

What is your secret for keeping the soul of the YCM intact despite moving to more extensive facilities with an increased membership?

We were committed to preserving the soul of the Yacht Club of Monaco despite moving to larger facilities and increasing our membership by embracing our motto, ‘One Spirit, One Team, One Club’. Our unwavering dedication to preserving our heritage, promoting a welcoming atmosphere, and continuously involving our 2,500 members has been crucial. We have carefully preserved significant elements from our previous location, strengthened our staff, and maintained our Club’s friendly spirit.

There is no better tool or equipment you can have on board than a well-trained crew. What strategy do you employ for building an efficient work team?

Passion is our driving force and a unifying factor among our staff. Probably due to the unique nature of the YCM being a private club, YCM staff shares a deep attachment to our members and the values of yachting. This devotion for the sea and yachting is accompanied by continuous training and various complementary profiles, with everyone committed to excellence in serving our members.

How do you interact with the Board of Directors? What would you say is their primary role?

We have a very regular exchange on roadmaps and policies. It’s a collaborative effort, and discussion is essential. The Executive Committee is like a council of wise men, an approval authority for the YCM budget and overall strategy.

yacht club monaco directeur

So many events, so little time! How do you organise so many members’ events, sailing school, yachting conferences, exhibitions, competitive regattas, private affairs, and more?

I think it’s a matter of strong will. We have incredibly motivated competent teams working tirelessly to ensure our events run smoothly. We also rely on the Commissaires Fleet, comprised of many Yacht Club of Monaco volunteers. They are the living force contributing enthusiasm and their expertise to organising all the Club’s events. Working hand in hand with the Club’s staff, the Commissaires Fleet is organised into five departments and offers its recruits training courses throughout the year to ensure the quality of the welcome and the smooth running of the Club’s gatherings, positioning it as a benchmark in sporting events.

What is the most rewarding about being a director of the YCM?

It is undoubtedly seeing the joy on the faces of those who come regularly to the Club and participate in our events, whether they are members, sailors, the yachting industry professionals, or the public. But I’m also thinking of the young racers in the Club’s sports section. They come to training with smiles and make memories that will last a lifetime. That’s priceless!

What was the most challenging task you faced in your career so far?

I think it’s the one common to all industries and institutions nowadays: access to sustainability. We continue to transform, as do all conscientious industries. All the players are willing and open to change, but the biggest challenge is not change itself but the acceleration of the process.

yacht club monaco directeur

How do you see the Yacht Club of Monaco evolving into the future?

I hope the Club will continue its momentum and remain a significant player in the yachting world and through the environmental transition. I hope the industry will continue its eco-responsible evolution and become a model to follow. My aspiration at my level and with my means is that I will have contributed to this change.

Above all, I want to share my passion for yachting with the new generation, which is the key to everything. It is for them that we are working to accompany the sector’s mutation, to encourage it to become more eco-responsible to protect the environment and allow our children to continue to enjoy the sea. In line with the wishes of YCM President HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, who believes, “Faced with the climate emergency, it is imperative that living proof of progress replaces the promises,” we strive to demonstrate that the technology exists and is efficient.

Yacht Club Monaco

Founded in 1953 by Prince Rainier and presided over by HSH Prince Sovereign Albert II since 1984, the Yacht Club de Monaco brings together more than 2.500 members from 80 nationalities. Many of the world’s most prestigious private yachts fly the Yacht Club de Monaco’s burgee, testimony to its unique position on the international yachting scene.

Inauguration of the new YCM building

At 43°44’15’’ N and 7°25’40’’ E, this hi-tech building which looks like a liner docked on Quai Louis II is home to two of the Principality’s historic clubs: the Société Nautique (rowing club) and the Yacht Club, a meeting point for owners and focus of international yachting activities. Alongside Lord Foster and Monegasque architect Alexandre Giraldi, Jacques Grange and Nelson Wilmotte have put their talents to the service of the new building’s interior and exterior layout and design.

“ Allow me to express a very sincere wish that the Yacht Club de Monaco fulfil its mission as a link between people who love the sea, that it serves the interests ”

— Prince Rainier III

To be a member of the Yacht Club de Monaco is above all a commitment. It is a desire to preserve a certain ethic, both on land and on the water, and to foster a respect for naval etiquette and preservation of the environment. The Yacht Club de Monaco’s philosophy is based on the need to perpetuate but also to pass on a heritage, inherited from our ancestors, to ensure that the Yacht Club remains a lively and progressive place.

Yacht Club de Monaco signs National Energy Transition Pact

YCM signe le pacte - Bernard D’Alessandri, Directeur Général du Yacht Club de Monaco signe le Pacte National pour la Transition Energétique

Bernard D’Alessandri, Directeur Général du Yacht Club de Monaco signe le Pacte National pour la Transition Energétique

To mark the start of the 8th Monaco Energy Boat Challenge (6–10 July 2021), the Yacht Club de Monaco, represented by Managing Director Bernard D’Alessandri, signed the National Energy Transition Pact on Wednesday 7 July. Numerous officials were present for the signing, including Marie-Pierre Gramaglia, Minister of Public Works, the Environment and Urban Development.

The Yacht Club de Monaco has made a number of commitments on the energy transition, with a particular focus on mobility. The Club is promoting sustainable mobility solutions to its members and the yachting industry more broadly, through means such as the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge and the SEA Index. The Monaco Energy Boat Challenge promotes the use of hydrogen, heat recovery, solar panels and wind power. This year, 32 teams including 22 universities from all over the world, are taking part in the race, with a total of 350 participants, more than 200 of them students. The SEA Index is a benchmark that aims to measure the environmental impact of yachts measuring more than 40 metres in length (in terms of design and use). It is intended to become a fully transparent global standard offering an assessment of the energy impact of large yachts.

In a similar vein, a round table on hydrogen organised by the Yacht Club de Monaco, the Prince Albert II Foundation and the Mission for Energy Transition was held at 10 a.m. on Friday 9 July. The agenda featured a discussion among Monegasque and French institutions and leaders of international hydrogen projects and the aim was to address the issue of developing hydrogen for maritime and transport use.

The Yacht Club also hosted a responsible yachting event organised by the Mission for Energy Transition to celebrate World Oceans Day in June, at which Bernard D’Alessandri said: “Monaco, the yachting capital, must position itself as a port of excellence.” He also noted that the use of combustion engine vessels for schoolchildren would soon be discontinued in favour of electric boats.

As is the case for every National Pact signatory, a review will be carried out in a year’s time to see what the Yacht Club de Monaco has done to reduce its carbon footprint.

A popular seaside resort in the south of Uruguay, Punta del Este has a dynamic yacht club since 1924, with an international reputation for excellence.

Written by Aurore Teodoro – Photos: Ricardo Figueredo, YCPE et All rights reserved

At a short distance from the Uruguayan capital Montevideo, the Punta del Este peninsula has been home to its eponymous yacht club for nearly a century. With the Atlantic Ocean stretching out at its feet on one side and a magnificent bay with calm waters closed off by a small island on the other, the location offers a vast and varied conditions at sea to its 1 000 club members. Created in 1924, the club has never stopped developing and it now owns two buildings: the main Clubhouse, which is considered to host one of the most distinguished restaurants in the area, with terraces overlooking the bay, two bars and an inner garden and offers a Business centre, main offices and a conference room, and the “Yateste”, located at the opposite end of the street, a building whose offices have fantastic views of the port, used by race organisers, and which offers rooms for accommodation.

Located in this city whose nicknames include “the Monaco of South America” or “the Atlantic Pearl”, the Yacht Club Punta del Este (YCPE) is at the centre of an intense yachting and social life, particularly during the summer season. In addition to its sailing school, which train over 150 students, it has among its members a growing number of enthusiastic sailors, many of whom have been distinguished in local, regional and international competitions. YCPE has been host of the Snipe World Championship, Vaurien, Soling World Championship, J70, Soling and Optimist South American Championships, oceanic events such as: Cape town-Punta del Este; Whitbread Round the World Race; BOC Around Alone; Velux 5 Oceans, Global Ocean Race and Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. Each year it also hosts the Rolex Cup Circuito Atlántico Sur co-organised with the Yacht Club Argentino (another club twinned with the Yacht Club de Monaco).

The YCPE is also active on the international institutions. Uruguay´s National Authority in the Union Internationale Motonautique (whose headquarters are in Monaco), the club has been elected this year the first South American Club member of the prestigious International Council of Yacht Clubs. It also enjoys reciprocal rights with renowned clubs all over the world, like the Royal Thames Yacht Club, Yacht Club Italiano, Norddeutscher Regatta Verein, Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, Clube Naval de Cascais, and the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club among many others.

Juan Etcheverrito Zerboni : “An exchange program with the Yacht Club de Monaco”

Interview by Jean-Marc Moreno- Photos : Ricardo Figueredo, YCPE et All rights reserved

Monaco´s Consul Honoraire in Uruguay, Juan Etcheverrito Zerboni has become four years ago the Commodore of the Yacht Club Punta del Este, after over 35 years at the club.

What are the specificities of your club?

Our club´s fundamental purpose is the organization and promotion of Yachting as well as motor boat activities. Given the privileged geographical location of Punta del Este we have hosted some of the major round the world races, as well as World Championships and South American Championships of the Soling, J70 and Optimist classes, among others. Another very important activity functioning all year round is our Sailing School, which has over 150 students. In addition, YCPE has a first class restaurant that has been awarded by British Magazine LUX Life in the 2019 Food & Drink Awards, and we also work hard to provide our Club members with cultural activities such as art exhibitions of renowned South American artists, and weekly conferences of high intellectual level.

How many members do you have?

Our Club currently has a little bit over 1 000 members and almost 50% are foreigners.

What are the key events organized by the YCPE?

YCPE has been host of major yachting events such as the Cape Town-Punta del Este Race, the Whitbread Round the World Race, the BOC Challenge, the Around Alone, the Velux 5 Oceans, the Global Ocean Race, Soling World Championship, South American Optimist Championships, several Offshore power boats championships, plus Snipe and Vaurien World Championships, Dragons championships, the annual Rolex Cup-South Atlantic Circuit and the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.

What is your best memory as Commodore ?

Attending the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race start in London last year and watching our boat, Punta del Este, as it led the fleet down the River Thames, waving the Uruguayan Flag and YCPE´s burgee.

What would you consider to be the advantages of a twinning with the YCM ?

There are many similarities between our Clubs and its members. I would say that the main advantage is the mutual cooperation. Mr. Bernard D´Alessandri, Secrétaire & Directeur Général of the Yacht Club the Monaco, has been extremely collaborative and kind.

How do these take concrete form ?

We have organized an exchange program and a team from YCPE travels to Monaco to compete in the Monaco Optimist Team Race; we´ve done this for three years now. We have also invited a team from Yacht Club de Monaco to compete in Punta del Este, they had a great performance! This gives our youngest sailors a wonderful learning experience, bringing both clubs closer together.

Winner of Yacht Club de Monaco’s Superyacht Chef Competition revealed

Nicolas Petit, yacht chef of 43 metre Latitude , has been crowned the victor of Yacht Club de Monaco’s Superyacht Chef competition.

A jury led by Chef Nicolas Sale, head of two Michelin star restaurants, gave Petit a collective vote after sampling his duck breast, mousseline of peas and black garlic accompanied by baby carrots and duck jus followed by a tuile with pineapple roasted in rosemary.

Nine contestants battled it out to create the winning dish. Each was presented with a basket of mystery ingredients and were penalised for every product that went unused under the competition’s new anti-waste criteria.

The event was held on April 8 by the Yacht Club de Monaco (YCM) under the aegis of its La Belle Classe Academy training centre in partnership with Bluewater .

“It’s a special event that is all about sharing values that we hold dear at Yacht Club de Monaco," said YCM general secretary Bernard d’Alessandri.

“It is very much in line with Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting, an approach that aims to position the Principality as a destination synonymous with excellence in the Luxury Yachting sector.”

Other yacht chefs taking part in the competition included Joshua Kent of 65 metre White Rose of Drachs , Simon Cuel of 78 metre Hampshire II , Palmire Leblanc of 33 metre Dayboat , Marco Crispino of 50 metre Sibelle , Daniel Harding of 33 metre S , Alexandra Perez of 39.9 metre Ava II , Micail Swindells of 77 metre Go and Ivan Holmes of 38 metre Kjos .

After making it through the first three qualifying rounds of forty minutes, Petit was up against Swindells and Holmes in the final.

Speaking about his victory, Petit said: “It’s such a surprise and great recognition, I’m really overwhelmed. The most difficult part was managing the wait when you can see all the others cooking and you just want to get going.”

Nicholas Sale headed up the jury alongside esteemed judges including Benoît Nicolas, Didier Anies, Wendy Van Den Schrick and Jean-Claude Brugel. Between them, the judges have multiple prestigious "Meilleur Ouvrier de France" titles and were well-placed to judge the contest.

“Forty minutes to produce a dish is not long but participants showed lots of positive energy," commented Sale. “Cooking at sea is something very special, It’s another vision of the profession. They are like us as they have to produce excellence to order but in a restricted space”

The new anti-waste criteria, devised by Chef Gilles Brunner, was also met with a positive response. “Anti-waste is essential in our profession and needs to be instilled in the new generation,” added Brunner.

YCM’s last Superyacht Chef contest was held in 2019 when Stéphanie Gravier of 73 metre Planet Nine was named the winner.  The next edition will be held in April 2023.

Eco-responsible superyacht honoured by Monaco Yacht Club

sea-index-monaco

The Monaco Yacht Club and Crédit Suisse launched the SEA Index® in 2020 to encourage the yachting industry to become more environmentally friendly.

The M/Y Kasper 7 scored highly. The 67-metre superyacht, built in 2023 by the Italian shipyard Benetti and owned by a member of the Yacht Club de Monaco (YCM), has been awarded a 3-star SEA Index® certification.

“ It’s a fantastic tool because it shows how shipowners, crew, and shipyards care about the sea and the environment. We’re very proud to have been awarded 3 stars. It tells us we’re heading in the right direction, ” said Dario Savino, captain of the superyacht and founding member of the YCM Captains’ Club.

This distinction is the result of a CO2 certification process, rigorously audited by the British maritime classification company Lloyd’s Register, and carried out by the YCM for any shipowner who requests it. Vessels that are awarded 3 stars are recognised for their environmental approach and are entitled to exclusive benefits: free membership of the Superyacht Eco Association in 2024, discounts on mooring fees in the YCM Marina, preferential insurance rates with Jutheau Husson, a professional member of the SEA Index®, and a discount for the entire crew on sustainability training provided by La Belle Classe Academy, the Monaco Yacht Club’s training centre.

Yacht Club de Monaco: Flagship events in 2024!

As a reminder, the SEA Index® assesses pleasure boats’ CO2 emissions, to support shipowners who are committed to more environmentally responsible yachting. A five-star rating system is used at the end of this assessment, and vessels that are awarded at least three stars are eligible to join the Superyacht Eco Association. This initiative is an integral part of the collective “Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting” initiative. More and more superyacht owners are embracing more sustainable practices and some are aiming for even higher standards.

The impact calculated by the SEA Index® is expressed in grams of CO2 release into the atmosphere per gross ton, which is representative of the volume of the vessel’s enclosed space. The assessment system is based on a methodology adopted by the United Nations International Maritime Organisation, with specific adjustments for yachts measuring over 25 metres.

A sustainable marina

24 Biohuts installed in the YCM Marina

A new step for the environment

The Yacht Club de Monaco has decided to support a new ecological action by becoming a true ecological corridor in the Port Hercule by enabling the installation of 24 new nurseries in the YCM Marina. Indeed, since 2014, the Direction des Affaires Maritimes (DAM), the Direction de l’Environnement (DE) and the Société d’Exploitation des Ports de Monaco (SEPM) have called on the Ecocéan company to install “Biohuts” in the Principality’s ports to create artificial habitats that reintroduce the ecological nursery function of rocky and sandy bottoms. The process protects the larvae from predators, giving them a better chance of surviving and contributing to the growth of adult populations.

Since these installations have proved their effectiveness, as attested by the BIOTOPE company’s biannual scientific monitoring reports, which record the presence of 416 fish of 12 different species and an extremely well-developed and varied fauna, the DAM, DE and SEPM have decided to continue this partnership for a further four years. A total of 79 nurseries have been installed in Monaco’s ports, covering the entire Port Hercule and Port de Fontvieille, in order to restore the ecosystem impacted by human activity.

Cleaning robot

Installed within our Marina since 2021, DPOL plays a role in reducing water pollution. Thanks to this initiative, nearly 5 kg of floating waste are collected every month.

Electric boat recharging station

In May 2019, two AQUA SUPERPOWER terminals were installed on the dock for recharging boats. The Yacht Club de Monaco was among the early adopters of this technology during the first installation. Since the summer of 2023, two new terminals have been installed at Touch & Go on the pontoon. These 4 terminals offer direct current. Boats equipped with a DC Combo connector can recharge up to 150 kW in just

Water collection

Grey and black waters are collected through a simple gravity-based connection to the dock, thereby preventing uncontrolled discharges into the sea. This collection method aligns with our commitment to preserving the quality of the surrounding water.
