Hi all, my first post here, though I've been snooping for a while. I think this boat is for me. Haven't had much luck with my internet searching for info. I think it has been mentioned on this forum...but not any real info. I know Jim Young has retired and is famous for the Young 780 Rocket racing boat. I think this boat was built using stitch and glue and from the photos looks to be in excellent condition, asking price is $A20K includes trailer. Can anyone point me at more info? Really great site! amazing amount of knowledge and info here. Cheers Jay

I'm sure the 780 hull is ply with a double chine and not really stitch and tape in the sense of tortured/tensioned ply s&t, but yes, it is still this method. He also designed a single chine 6 metre water ballasted trailer sailer using the same method. The jpeg is of his round bilge 840 and similar to Jim's own boat Young and Frisky except this one was built in Japan. I have a 780 plan photograph somewhere, will post later. I remember Jim was pleased with the 780 Rocket because it could be amateur built and yet was still a high performance boat.

This is the young 780. Looks like a single chine, it is ply epoxy build, the sales guy said it was stitch and glue but he also said he knew more about carpets than boats Seems like a good boat to cruise Moreton Bay with anual trips to other East Coast cruising areas. Towing it is no problem I have a diesel powered RangeRover. I've been a multihull fan for about 30 years, my choice boat being a John Gross Fastback 32 which we can't get for another couple of years, but the Young just hit my buttons and for $A20K why not grab it ?. Be good if you could post the plan pics and thanks for the reply.
51jay, that is not a 780 Rocket (which is a double chine lightweight with a small cabin) but one of Jim's single chine cruising versions, totally different beast.
Apologies, I should have said this is a Young 780 waterballasted trailer sailer. While the Rocket would be a fun boat it is not for me.
Anyway, here's the jpeg of the 780 Rocket - although on the plan it is called 780 high performance yacht - plus one of the 6 metre stitch and tape trailer sailer.

Thanks for that Gary
Went and had a look at the boat ( 12 hours of roadworks 40kph signs and traffic lights down the Pacific Highway) It is stitch and glue with all the seams taped and epoxied and looks to be very well built. However he did not glass or dynal cloth the hull. I think he was trying for a very light boat.

Gybeset, the chined wave surfing boat, Sew Easy, is a 6 metre stitch and tape design. I did a boat test on it years ago and that shot is from the article - and the lines plan is from the 780; again I did stuff on that design too. The round bilge design in the large photograph looks very neat and that must be a smaller version development of the round bilge 840. I'll ask Jim next time I see him. Cheers.

Say more stuff about the chined 780 lines plan! 1500 lbs for a wood 780 seems really light for a boat that size... what is the sail area? Ballast weight? rig plan?
Comment from Jim Young: That is Signs of Life, one of the first round bilge 780’s, cruising, lift keel 780 and there’s a racing 780 Rocket, my New Zealand boat. The Young 840 I designed for my son Frank, and one of his requirements was that it fit into a shipping container - so it limited the beam to 10 feet. It would have been better if I could have gone out another foot, or even to 12 feet and that would have made it a lot faster boat. But never mind, that 840 I owned, Young n Frisky, was a really good little boat and the fastest for her size during the time I raced her. Then I finally got sick of Wednesday night racing, and so I sold her. Now the centreboard weighed with the ballast about 1000lbs and we had to raise this on a winch by hand – which was very hard work. So I thought I couldn’t sell the boat with that arrangement and went and bought a little electric winch and a battery. All you had to do after that was fitted was press a button and this heavy keel would go easily and painlessly up and down. I should have done that from the word go. That’s how far you will go to save weight.
Rapscallion 25 feet x 8 feet x 7 feet draft board down / 9" lifted, displacement 1500lbs, sail area: 320 sq.ft. Plans US900.00 - email Jim at: [email protected]
I tried emailing Jim to get more info on those plans, and I didn't get a response. Very interesting design... That boat should very fast, even by today's standards. I would like to know more about the rig, like how much a carbon rig for the boat would cost before I would start to build...

The young 840 also sounds interesting.... especially the part about making it faster by making it wider. I wouldn't have to fit the boat in a container. I can't wait to see a website that contains his designs.

Young Rocket 780 or Ross 780?

So my old man and I are looking at trailer yachts.

Would it be too much to ask for a opinion? positives and negatives? which goes better etc etc

There is both a rocket 780 and a Ross 780 on trade me at the moment, both of them we are looking at.

are you crazy or just stupid? unless you want to risk your life on these light little open transom death traps then i would be looking at nothing less than a mk1 raven or maybe a nice little h28.

Not sure what jharkin is getting at, clearly he has never sailed many trailer yachts.

My only experience is with the Ross 780, both racing and cruising with the family for years, they are awesome boats, although a little tippy compared to the modern sports type trailer yachts.

But they are good honest trailer yachts that perform well in most conditions, also I would buy the Ross just because it would be easier to sell later I reckon.

They seem to be good value for money at the moment as well.

Ours was a glass one built by Hopwood, the woodies were demons on the race track but would need a good survey as they are getting on a bit these days

Let me know how how ya get on.

The Young has a lower NZTYA number than the Ross, this would suggest the Ross is a better performer. However theres not much in it.

There is a larger Ross fleet out there, so if your looking to sail next to similar boat your choice is restricted. I see the Ross has a bulb, so that would put it outside the class specification as approved by NZTYA, so it would need a 'modified' NZTYA number to race in trailer yacht events.

The Ross is a well proven racer and cruiser.

GregW

I love these comparison threads. The Ross 780 was my dream boat for awhile before I got interested in multis. They were an expensive item back then (20 years ago) but bloody good value now. Did you look at the one for 15k a few weeks back?

Deep Purple

Deep Purple 511

Crewed on a Ross 780 for 3 years, won 2 nationals, I don't think you could get a better boat in that size and style

methinks jh was attempting humour

Both good, since racing is your thing look at where you'll get the best competition.

If you could find one an Elliott 780 would be worth a look too, they are quick but probably a few more bucks. Look at Erazer giving the sportsboat shorthaul yachts the hurry up in last years Simrad.

Hey Brooker - The Ogre's on the money. Jordan being funny. He's a bloody good lad (but don't tell him that)

I've only sailed the Ross 780 'Electra' - an extremely good wooden version. Good boats. Our late mate Rene Den Ouden was the guru

Yeah I did think that after I had posted, just giving his mate some stick

Wotcha talking about you snot faced little turd?

Like that????

Wotcha talking about you snot faced little turd?     Like that????

that should have been "spotty snot faced little turd", standards can't be allowed to slide you know

Kestrahl

The Rocket 780's are more common in Australia than NZ where they compare speed wise with the Elliott 780's and are a tad quicker than the Ross 780. Maybe that is not the case here with the earlier ones and there are not many here to really compare. The R780 would have easier resale as it is much more widely known in NZ.

From racetrack the Ross looks to be one of the faster 780s. 0.7461 is a pretty good number for a little boat.

Can't quite make out the name of the young in the trademe photos to try and look it up on racetrack though...

Having owned both in AUS. I can say the Youngs here are quicker than the Ross's but the the ease of sailing and the accommodation of the Ross leaves the Youngs for dead.

Ross Boat all the way.... I have a wooden one and have cruised with my young family on lake Rotoiti for the last 3 summers with no issues only good times. Easy boat to sail but also pretty quick for an old tub. The best part is if it was a class boat there are plenty of others to line up next to.

We have a new class being announced very soon.

7.7 mtr ply trailerable. Available at any stage including 'Flat Pack'. so you can build your own.

Design is based on the open 40 but a much smaller model.

The idea is to enable owners to get into an affordable boat that will be able to obtain Cat 3. or Cat 1 if you are keen. Designed to suit Short Handed sailing too.

The first is due to start construction this week and we have 2 more owners ready to go.

An official announcement and promo is not far away which will include construction photos.

I'd be keen to understand all the costs, rig requirements etc. In the current market it may be better for me to move the rig and fittings from Infiltrator to a new hull and bin the old one.

Young Entertainer 59

I would be keen to get any info floating around as well, in the same thought at infiltrator, do you throw away the existing hull and use the bits on a new build? given the coyote is a 7.7 already most of the gear you would think would be at the right size

Young Rocket 780 on dual axle trailer in LOTA, Queensland for sale

Young Rocket 780 on dual axle trailer

Young Rocket 780 on galvanised dual axle trailer. The Jim Young designed Rocket 780 is one of the boats that started the sports boat craze. Although the design is more than 20 years old, it is still fast. The Young 780 is a beamy planning hull with plumb bow and lift keel and rudder with a cabin that provides 4 berths. Built by AGS Yachts on the Gold Coast in 1990, the boat is built using the WEST system with a cedar core. Boat specs Overall length 8.02m Waterline length 7.80m Beam 2.50m Mast overall 10.20m Displacement 860kg Max draft 1.8m Headroom 1.5m Sails Battened main with 2 reefing points No1, 2 and 3 and headstay foil 4 symmetrical spinnakers including a masthead spinnaker. Electrics Sounder (New transducer) Log UHF radio (New) Navigation lights (New) Auxiliary power 8hp long leg outboard with charging circuit which has not been run for some time Safety Flares Fire extinguisher Manual bilge pump 4 lifejackets Without a doubt, the boat has seen better days but it is still fast, a delight to sail, well equipped for racing and a cheap entry into sports boat racing. It has been tuned by its original owner with changes to the mast step and rudder. The boat could do with a repaint inside and out and offers the opportunity for further modification such as the inclusion of an asymmetrical spinnaker. The interior is stripped out for racing but some Rocket 780s boats have been fitted out with galleys and head. The trailer is in very good condition and bought in 2008 shortly before finding a crew and time became difficult. Trailer and boat are registered until 15th March If you are interested or have any questions please phone. Due to the possibility of scam text messages they won't get a response.

How many water ballast trailer sailers are there?

  • Thread starter Floyd Raser
  • Start date 9 Aug 2015

Floyd Raser

I've heard of Macgregeor and Hunters but I'd never heard of the Dehler 25 until someone plonked one next to my boat in the yard. Are there any others? the term "water ballast" seems to confuse the hell out of google.

I have a Young 780 which is a water ballasted 7.8 metre GOP trailer yacht designed by Jim Young in New Zealand. Jim Young was a prolific designer and a keen racing sailor so even my boat which was designed for accommodation and low weight on the trailer is reasonably nimble - unlike a Macgregor for example. (OTOH, I dont have a 50 hp motor and can't waterski behind my boat.) The design is from an era when the family car was a 2 litre sedan or 2.4 if you were posh and the idea was to make a largish boat that could be trailed without needing a truck. I have toyed with the idea of substituting lead for water and loading up the centreboard weight as well to increase stiffness, but probably wont make the investment. I use a 12 volt mattress inflator to suck in or blow out the ballast water and being able to "blow all tanks" and reduce draught when going into lagoons for a night is quite cool. I'd be surprised if any Young water ballast designs were in the UK, but the water ballast principle is entirely sound. I have seen where some people on forums have tried to "prove" that water ballast doesn't work, but all they prove is their own ignorance of simple physics. There is no question that for a performance monohull, a large lump of lead or better still, depleted uranium on the end of the keel is the best thing. Where i sail though, my boat will beat your fixed keel boat because i will be over the bar and gone hours before you can leave harbour. Just shows all over again that all boat designs are a floating set of compromises. Cheers

I think the issue with water ballast is there is no problem if the volume you are filling is full completely with water. If so then this is effective cos water is heavy stuff as we all know. If a volume/tank is not full then it can slosh about affecting trim and stressing the tank ?

Seajet said: But it will go to the downhill leeward side, wheras a full tank might contribute a bit towards righting moment ! Until you get to the stage where you can pump water side to side in tanks at the beam width of the boat, water ballast is pretty inefectual; even boats with lead or iron internal ballast don't stand up very well. Just about Ok on a lake, but I've seen it get pretty lumpy on Windermere and the regular katabatic squalls on most lakes will be fairly unwelcome on a lightly ballasted boat; are you staying onboard overnght ? If not, a dinghy and a tent / camper van / B&B might be a better bet, safer and more fun ? Click to expand...

It's going to depend on how much water ballast, where it is in the boat design, and if it's a wide boat with ' form stability ' as well as the rather poor ' ballast stability ' conferred by water then it will be more stable than a pencil thin design with a one gallon jerrycan on the cabin sole ! Water ballast is helpful for trailing, but so is a trailer and not many boats set off in boat mode with those; unless one goes to extremes like a racer and pumps it side to side, it's not much use as ballast, people use cast iron or lead, several feet below the hull, for good reason. I've enjoyed katabatic squalls at Studland Bay too, the nasty thing is as they blow downwards not along the surface like the winds we're used to, heeling - whether with sails or just bare poles - presents more area rather than spilling wind so she'll go further over, relying on every bit of stability she has, form and ballast - and crew weight if available - to bring her back upright. It's even nastier if in an aircraft like a glider, microlight etc, getting pushed down on the leeward side of a hill is known as getting ' rotored ' and has been known to be fatal.

AngusMcDoon said: You have to remember Seajet's rule of boats and stuff : if it's on his boat, is his boat or is a Harrier, it's wonderful, the greatest, fantastic, the best, bombproof, go anywhere and so on ad nauseum; everything else is utter rubbish. Click to expand...
Floyd Raser said: Blimey! I've just had to look up "katabatic". It has to the word of the day for tomorrow; try and get it into conversations at work. Click to expand...
AngusMcDoon said: Get the context right though. They are formed by intense cooling of air at height compared to the air at lower level making it significantly denser so that it rushes down the slope. Common in Greenland, Antarctica, Canada, Patagonia and other places where there is snow cover at height to cool the air. You don't get them in Studland Bay; there's not the temperature difference at the modest height of the adjacent hill to drive them. That's just turbulence on the lee side of a hill affecting the bog standard gradient wind - a very common effect in West coast Scottish waters. Click to expand...
Floyd Raser said: Shouldn't you add a smiley to the end of that as you are besy mates? That's it then; I'll get a couple of Harrier drop tanks, nail them to the side of an Anderson 22 and flood them. Water ballast! Click to expand...
Floyd Raser said: Thanks, I'll bring it up at the water cooler. Click to expand...
Seajet said: What size drop tanks ? if empty that would make a buoyant, boat shaped version of Angus's boat wouldn't it ?! Click to expand...

Ross 780 is a 25 ′ 7 ″ / 7.8 m monohull sailboat designed by Murray Ross and built by Austin - Hopwood Boats (NZ) starting in 1980.

Drawing of Ross 780

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
