The Pacific Northwest is a region in western North America bounded by the Pacific Ocean to the west and, loosely, by the Rocky Mountains on the east. Though no universally agreed upon boundary exists, a common conception includes the U.S. states of Oregon, Washington, and the Canadian province of British Columbia. Broader conceptions reach north into Alaska and Yukon, south into the coastal and mountainous regions of Northern California, and east into Idaho and western Montana, and western Wyoming to the Continental Divide. Narrower conceptions may be limited to the Northwestern U.S. or to the coastal areas west of the Cascade and Coast mountains.  The Northwest Coast is the coastal regions of the Pacific Northwest and the Northwest Plateau (also commonly known as "The Interior" in British Columbia and the Inland Empire in the United States) is the inland regions. A yacht charter vacation in this region usually includes the areas surrounding the Puget Sound, the second largest estuary in the USA with over 2300 miles of coastline and the San Juan Islands.

Montlake Cut:  The Montlake Cut is the easternmost section of the Lake Washington Ship Canal, which passes through the city of Seattle, linking Lake Washington to Puget Sound. It is approximately 2,500 feet (760 m) long and 350 feet (110 m) wide. The center channel is 100 feet (30 m) wide and 30 feet (9.1 m) deep. The path along the cut was designated a National Recreation Trail as Montlake Cut National Waterside in 1971.[1]

The Cut provides a connection between Union Bay, part of Lake Washington, to the east and Portage Bay, an arm of Lake Union, to the west. It is spanned by the Montlake Bridge, a bascule drawbridge carrying Montlake Boulevard (State Route 513). Most of the land on the north shore of the Cut is occupied by the University of Washington, its medical school to the west and its stadium parking lot to the east; residences and a recreational trail occupy the south bank, which is part of the Montlake neighborhood. It is the site of the annual Windermere Cup crew regatta and the Seattle Yacht Club's Opening Day Boat Parade, both of which take place on the first Saturday in May. Puget Sound Boat Rental:  The Puget Sound region is home to the majority of Washington State citizens who live in the bustling cities and suburbs that extend north to south from Stanwood to Olympia. Most Puget Sound communities lie on either side of the north-south Interstate 5 corridor that serves as the major traffic thoroughfare of the state.

Puget Sound itself is a body of water lying east of Admiralty Inlet, through which ocean waters reach inland some 50 miles from the Pacific Coast to provide all-weather ports for ocean-going ships at Seattle, Tacoma and Olympia. The waterway is a complex and intricate system of channels, inlets, estuaries, embayments and islands.

Ballard Locks:   Tourists and locals enjoy watching the parade of yachts, sailboats, motorboats, barges and tugs passing through as the locks' water levels are adjusted to allow for safe passage between the salt water and the fresh water of the ship canal. Tillicum Village:  Tillicum Village is a Puget Sound area visitor attraction located on Blake Island just off the shore of Seattle, WA. It is believed that this attraction dates to the time period immediately preceding the 1962 Seattle World's Fair. Madison Park:  Madison Park is a neighborhood in east central Seattle, Washington, USA, named after the city park at the foot of E. Madison Street on the Lake Washington shore Estates on Mercer Island:  Mercer Island Estates is the largest South End neighborhood located just south of the QFC shopping center and Mercer Island Country Club. This planned community was built in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and includes homes in a variety of styles, including mid-century modern, traditional, and Northwest contemporary. With wide streets and plenty of cul-de-sacs, this neighborhood is popular with families, who also enjoy Wildwood Park and its proximity to the nearby South End shopping center.

Fremont Cut:  The Fremont Cut is a body of water that forms part of the Lake Washington Ship Canal, which passes through the U.S. city of Seattle and links Lake Washington to Puget Sound. The Fremont Cut connects Lake Union to the east with Salmon Bay to the west. It is 5,800 feet (1,800 m) long and 270 feet (82 m) wide. The center channel is 100 feet (30 m) wide and 30 feet (9.1 m) deep.

The Fremont Cut is spanned by the Fremont Bridge, a bascule drawbridge that connects the neighborhoods of Fremont and Queen Anne via Fremont Avenue North. A campus of Adobe Systems and the headquarters for Tableau Software are located at the north-eastern quadrant of this intersection of bridge and canal, and an office of Google is located on the north-western quadrant. Meydenbauer Bay in Bellevue:  The Bellevue Marina lies between the foot of 99th Avenue Northeast and 100th Avenue Southeast on the south side of downtown Bellevue. Depending upon the pier, the marina may be accessed from either street. From Interstate 405, take the NE 8th Street exit west. Turn left on Bellevue Way Southeast. Turn right on Main Street and proceed until reaching either the 100th Avenue Southeast or 99th Avenue Northeast intersections (Please note that Main Street turns into Lake Washington Boulevard Northeast at the 100th Avenue Southeast intersection.) Estate with Full T-Rex skeleton inside: Nathan Myhrvold became fascinated with dinosaurs and visited the filming of the “Jurassic Park” sequel in 1996 and met the film’s consultant and world-leading paleontologist, Jack Horner. Horner convinced Nathan to use some of his Microsoft multimillions to fund a dinosaur bone digging foundation. His foundation has recovered more tyrannosaurus rex skeletons than the total previously found by everyone else. He has given most of them to museums including the Smithsonian. In-side the big rounded windows of his living room he has one of the t-rex skeletons he helped dig up.

Bill Gates House: Originally purchasing the lakefront property for $2 million in 1988, Gates has done everything in his power to ensure his dream home doesn't have a negative impact on the environment. Built into a hill as part of its earth-sheltered design, Gates was concerned about potential runoff from the walls of the massive estate. To combat the problem, he collaborated with the two architectural firms who designed the home to create an artificial stream on the property to catch the runoff. And, in true Gates fashion, he took the design up a notch and has the stream stocked with salmon and trout giving even the wildlife a fisheye view of the most expensive home in America.

Fisherman's Terminal –  Fishermen's Terminal is a dock for Seattle, Washington's commercial fishing fleet, on Salmon Bay in the Interbay neighborhood, east of the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks and immediately west of the Ballard Bridge.

Hunts Point & City of Kirkland:   Incorporated in 1955, the Town of Hunts Point is located on the eastern shore of Lake Washington just north of the SR520 bridge. Once a camping ground for the Sammamish Indian tribe, this residential community of single-family residences is home to just under 500 residents. Hunts Point is one of the smallest municipalities in Western Washington, yet its bucolic feel and proximity to Seattle and the Eastside help make it a highly desirable place to live. Seattle Skyline: From 1903 to 1904, Seattle's tallest building and first steel-framed skyscraper is constructed. And Cloe and Zane: always about the yacht assuring that we were without need. And such nice, nice individuals. And we loved the “uniforms”. And, then there was you. I have been about yachts for 50 years; yes, 50. I have been aboard 10 chartered yachts with captains and crew. I know expertise. You are beyond remarkable. We felt very safe and enjoyed seeing you “in action”. Then there was your hospitality. Charming. Quite charming. And, yes, we were sad to leave. All to say, we all had a marvelous time. I speak for everyone, even Gordon. And Joanne and I look forward to returning, likely with family, (when I able to gain consensus, somewhat like gaining world peace). Thank you. Thank you. Dear Jim, Fran & Sally, We have had a most fantastic cruise with a most generous Captain. Sally in the galley had the most satisfying food of any cruise I have been on. The sea lions and seals were great to watch and the whales put on a fine show, with their fluking and blowing. The scenery was awesome. The sailing was smooth. Well, this is Day 5 for my week long adventure on the Jamal. Grandpa & Grandma will still be with all of you for a week after we leave. Trent & I, (newlyweds), have had the most spectacular time with all of you. Our crew, Captain Jen, Kathy (Kiki) & Sally Wally. You have made this trip a dream come true for us. We came here to relax before our big day, & we have definitely accomplished that. It was above & beyond anything we could have imagined! Alaska is beautiful & breath-taking, but not half as beautiful & breath-taking as you three ladies. The hospitality, amazing, the food, outstanding, the memories, forever! The generosity of our Captain, even though she was on a schedule, was perfect. She knew how badly I, (Allie), wanted to see whales. She found them & took the time out for us to enjoy them. I shall never forget her for that; I will never forget any of the crew. They will be forever in our hearts and I truly wish they could be at our wedding. Thank you so much for your kindnesses. Sensational sights of whales, glaciers, and bears have made this voyage on the Jamal the most fantastic way to see Alaska. Taking those narrow passages and hearing the thunderous crack of the glaciers remains for me the highlight of the trip. Thanks to you, Jennifer, we have seen as much of Alaska as possible in a short time. You took us to waterfalls, sea lions, warm & hot springs and superbly maneuvered the boat to sight whales. Travel in tandem with DK, Stacy and Megan proved to be fortuitous, with them some of our group went fishing and even saw bears in action. And, Jen, your crew of Sally, Sally Jo, and Cathy went out of their way at all times to make us extremely comfortable, well fed, and entertained. You have all enriched my life and I will miss you. Alaska will be here if we ever decide to return, but we would be lacking something if we didnt see you again.

Captain: Jennifer Hanna

Captain Jennifer Hanna, who also holds a U. S. Coast Guard Master’s license, has cruised the waters of Puget Sound to Alaska with her father, Jim, all of her life. Her precise navigational skills and exceptional knowledge of seamanship have been valuable assets on charters. She has recently spent a year sailing the Pacific coast to southern Mexico. Jennifer earned a Master’s of Education degree and a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Western Washington University. She has taught elementary and middle school in the Bellingham area since 1988. Her love of the sea is reflected in her many interests which include fishing, swimming, water skiing, sailing, snorkeling and surfing. Jennifer is certified in scuba diving and First Aid.

From the buzzing marina hives of the San Juans, the most popular yacht charter area in the Western United States, to the humble marinas of the Sunshine Coast, charter boats are well catered for. You can find shopping, dining, art and history on the San Juans or serene tranquility in Desolation Sound. From the famous Desolation Sound and the humble Sunshine Coast and Jervis Inlet, to the San Juan Islands in the south and the Gulf Islands in the north, this sailing area has a plenty to offer any yacht charter vacation.

Desolation Sounds is the confluence of Malaspina Inlet & Homfray Channel. Here there are more than 60 km of shoreline, many islands and off course there are plentiful small bays & snug little coves to stay in. This part North America offers beautiful scenery, trails & wilderness walks on land and it is a great location for power boating as well as sailing.

The types of yacht charter available in the Pacific Northwest are all the main types including motor, sailing, bareboat charter, skippered, crewed yachts, catamaran, power boat, sailboat, luxury yachts and even super yacht charter.

The peak cruising season for the Pacific Northwest is from June through to September. The yacht charter shoulder seasons of May and early October are also well worth considering, as they are less crowded and the weather is usually still fairly settled.

A typical day cruise is a minimum of three hours and departs from Shilshole Bay Marina. Most guests aboard ‘Amelia’ enjoy cruising past Bainbridge Island, West Point Lighthouse, Elliott Bay, the downtown Seattle waterfront, and Alki Beach. Longer cruises can include adventures around Blake Island, Vashon Island and Agate Point. Wherever you choose to go, you’ll have a fantastic voyage with gorgeous views and smooth sails.

Q: Is food provided?

A: Light snacks, soft drinks, coffee, tea, and bottled water are provided by Sailing Caprice. If you would like to bring your own food, you are more than welcome to do so. We even have a grill! If you’re interested in having the trip catered, we have partnered with several of the best restaurants in Seattle to provide you and your guests with a host of extraordinary dining options on ‘Amelia’.

Q: What should I wear?

A: For your comfort, we recommend you wear layered clothing and soft soled shoes. Seattle can be cool and windy in the spring, fall and winter, and warmer and less windy in the summer. However, the temperatures can fluctuate by 20 degrees in a single day, so please prepare accordingly.

Q: What about seasickness?

A: ‘Amelia’ is a 38 foot cruising catamaran. As such, she heels (tips) only 3 to 5 degrees, which makes her one of the smoothest sailing options in Puget Sound. Seasickness is rare on a large cruising catamaran like Amelia. If you are prone to motion sickness, we recommend taking motion sickness medication an hour or two before boarding, just in case.

Q: Can children come aboard?

A: Absolutely! Sailing on ‘Amelia’ is a fun and adventurous experience for kids of all ages. ‘Amelia’ is stocked with life jackets sized for young skippers, and is a great way to introduce your child to the wonders of the water.

Wander along Water Street which boasts of interesting shops and boutiques, and several restaurants. If you want to just sit back and relax, then Rose Theatre is just the ticket. It has some of the original murals and old-time balcony seats where you can enjoy watching any art film or Sundance favorites. Port Townsend is just miles away from the Olympic National Park. The Olympic Park has beaches, rain forest valleys, glacier-capped peaks and numerous varieties of plants and animals.

Best Beaches: Glass Beach of Port Townsend is one of the best beaches, in the Pacific Northwest, where you can find great quality beach glass in various colors and sizes. North Beach is another popular beach of Townsend. It stretches more than 3.5 miles along the Strait of Juan de Fuca and offers great views of Fort Worden's Artillery Hill and the Point Wilson Lighthouse.

Outdoor Activities: You will get to enjoy amazing outdoor activities in Port Townsend. Since it is located on the waterfront, you can enjoy any water-based activity. Try kayaking, go whale watching, or take a sailing lesson. Chetzemoka Park is an idyllic playground for children. The park has a great gazebo for picnic lunches, foot bridges, a forest of rhododendrons, and climbable tree stumps. Fishing: Port Townsend and the Olympic Peninsula offer plentiful fishing opportunities as the areas are home to a variety of species, such as the delicious and hard fighting Lingcod, Rockfish, Seabass, Cabezon, Flounder, Pacific Halibut, and others. Cutthroat trout and resident coho/silver salmon can be caught during a saltwater fishing excursion near Port Townsend. Be sure to enjoy your time on the water while exploring our local beaches and put clams and oyster gathering on your bucket list.
