50-metre-motor-yacht-trending

On board with Paul and Maureen Petracca, owners of 49m superyacht Trending

After racking up 40 charters, the Petraccas decided it was time to buy their own boat – and all that experience informed one far-reaching refit, as they tell Tristan Rutherford...

The moment that Maureen and Paul Petracca knew they wanted to own their yacht came after 40 successful charters.“On our last trip the captain was the worst we’ve ever had,” says Maureen. “He even stranded our son and his fiancée on a tiny island off St Barths . Genuinely no one knew where they were.” After four hours playing Robinson Crusoe, the young couple were lucky to hitch a ride with a passing boat back to the Petracca family’s charter. “For the amount you pay for a week aboard, you want the charter experience to be perfect,” continues Maureen. “At that point Paul and I looked at each other and said: ‘We need to take control of this ourselves. Let’s buy a yacht of our own!’”

The result is Trending . “After 20 years of chartering several times per year we knew what we wanted,” says Paul. The twin-angled brief called for a shallow draught for cruising the Bahamas, the Petraccas’ nearest fly-in, kick-back island chain, plus a maximum length of 50 metres “because above that some ports need a pilot, and there are other regulations and entanglements”, says Paul. The equation delivered seven or eight possible yachts, leaving two 50 metre Westport 164s in contention. One became the perfect blank canvas for an ambitious overhaul into an understated and luxurious six-cabin superyacht that cruises across the Atlantic at up to 20 knots.

She’s certainly a step up from Maureen and Paul’s first foray on to the water. “We both grew up as lake people,” explains Paul. “Each of us had a summer house, and mine came with an aluminium boat with a nine horsepower engine.” As powerboats were a rarity, the family runabout was used to the full for fishing and racing. Maureen’s family was based on a lake on Cape Cod. “Our first boat was fibreglass with a six horsepower engine out back, and we graduated to a 5.8 metre on which we learned to waterski.” When married, the couple jointly purchased a 9.7 metre Edgewater. “We still use it to hop over to Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard,” says Maureen.

From their Massachusetts home, the Petraccas’ career and vacation horizons broadened. Paul is now the chief investment officer at Pemco Management, which focuses on public equity investments, primarily in the technology and healthcare spaces. Maureen oversaw a far more important project: the annual yachting trips for their three children and family friends. After dozens of charters from the likes of Camper & Nicholsons , Fraser and IYC , the Petraccas knew precisely what they wanted from a week in the Mediterranean or Caribbean. “By the end of our charter life we started bringing our own specialised fishing gear,” she explains. “We sometimes brought our own divemaster. Once we even shipped in our own tender.”

Undersea exploration would play a pivotal part in the Petraccas’ charter adventures from 1996 to 2015. The entire family are PADI certified divers. The 700 islands of the Bahamas particularly appealed, not least the Exumas. Croatia also delighted the Petraccas a few years back with its countless wreck dives. It was Dubrovnik that entranced Maureen. “We toured the medieval walls and UNESCO-protected Old Town, which were beautiful.”

Before the Petraccas’ own Westport could set sail for Europe there was work to be done. “Our purchase was a 1980s throwback,” recalls Maureen. It contained thick rugs, and heavily upholstered furniture littered the voluminous interior. The vessel, formerly called Vango , had been owned by a retired couple who used it infrequently, “which was great because she had very low engine hours”, says Paul. It was Maureen who oversaw the interiors as part of an all-encompassing refit from 2015 to 2016.

Light marble and white stone were laid across the main saloon. Oversized windows pour light on to the chrome, taupes, mirrors and creams. Rainforest showers and double sinks grace every en suite. A hint of individuality is provided by Maureen’s underwater photography portraits from as far afield as St Barths, Barbuda and Saba, the Dutch Caribbean island that contains the Netherlands’ highest peak. “Our experience from 40 charters has been distilled into this space,” says Maureen. Most importantly, the finish isn’t regally stiff but royally comfortable, with sky blue fabrics and enough crystal glasses to decant the entire Napa Valley.

Stepping aboard, it’s clear why they purchased a Westport over any other yacht. “Quite simply, we knew we could modify the hell out of it,” says Paul. A bridge extension has been constructed behind the tri-deck’s upper saloon, creating an additional raised dining area for all 12 guests. “The view is great, but the privacy is priceless,” says Maureen. “As Trending is sometimes tied up in a Mediterranean port you get people promenading past.” And who wants them watching you having dinner? An illuminated bar sparkles in the night sky, as a sound system rocks the extra club area installed on the Portuguese deck just in front of the bridge. “We’re a little afraid of the sun these days so sails shade the top by day.” A therapeutic Michael Phelps Signature Swim Spa with shaded lounging areas was added too. “I prefer pools that can accommodate many guests,” says Maureen. Hers can welcome eight.

Westport, based in Washington State, comes with five decades of North Pacific experience. “The company is up to hull No 15 or 16 for our largest model, the W164,” says Paul. “So most issues would have been resolved, which allowed us to incorporate those improvements in our yacht. We also knew we could get any spare parts as we’re based in the US.” Ultimately, the refit cost $5 million. “One name we thought of for the yacht was Legacy Killer, as it was just so appropriate,” he laughs. “This yacht keeps me coming to work and earning my keep.”

The electronics on board were a focus of Paul’s. “As guests aboard our own yacht we want to share videos from our iPhones directly on to all the screens,” he says. “I believe charter clients want to do the same.” His flotilla of toys, meanwhile, is truly enviable. There are Seabobs for speed snorkelling and glass-bottomed kayaks for slow drifts across virgin reefs. “When we bought the two RIBs I asked: what’s the biggest our crane can lift?” The result is four metre and 5.5 metre Novurania tenders, the latter with 120hp out back for fishing, diving, island picnics or secret beach retreats. Paul’s desire for perfection is ever present. “I’m a maintenance freak who wants every toy to work all of the time, for our sake and everyone else’s.”

The flotilla flagship is a 11.3 metre Boston Whaler. “Our son Christopher is a qualified captain in his own right so it’s his chance to drive,” says Maureen. The Petracca family uses it for sunset cruises, but only after speed records have been smashed via its triple 350hp outboards. The boat has “all the creature comforts” including electric shades, a barbecue, night vision equipment and an air- conditioned front cabin. Guests are welcome to invite Trending’s PADI instructor along for the ride. The Petraccas frequently use the boat for their latest craze – kitesurfing – which is best practised on the mirror-calm, searing-breeze waters off Barbados and the Grenadines.

Greater adventures await in the next two or three years. Maps have been consulted for a grand voyage through the Panama Canal. The route would allow for whale watching off Baja and leopard shark dives off LA’s Channel Islands, before passing Westport’s HQ near Seattle. Prince of Wales Island would then mark the gateway to an Alaskan summer. Will charter guests be able to book part of their route? “Sorry to disappoint, but it’ll be only us the whole time,” says Paul. “That is if I can keep myself away from the office for that long.” After 40 charters the Petraccas are now master of their own yacht.

History of Cedarwood Companies

What has now become a company that offers a full range of real estate services to a wide array of clients and has developed tens of millions of both commercial and residential properties across the United States, Cedarwood began with very humble beginnings.  The company was founded in 1972 by Tony Petrarca with just himself, his wife Lenora and a single laborer. Tony knew that hard work, perseverance, and attention to detail was the only way to shape the company into what it has become today.

1970-Cedarwood-Development

It all started in Akron, Ohio.

In the 1970s, Cedarwood started developing and building apartment homes in Northeast Ohio.  The first of these projects was Cedarwood Village apartments, one of the first large projects in Akron Ohio’s Merriman Valley, once a farming community along the Cuyahoga River. Cedarwood Village apartments later expanded to be part of Liberty Commons, a charming colonial-style complex of apartments, restaurants, retail shops, and professional suites.

1970-Cedarwood-Development

Creating a Solid Foundation

By building a strategic business plan and creating a solid foundation of projects throughout the 1980’s, Cedarwood was in the position to expand into a full-service real estate company.  The company began to branch out into every aspect of the development business from design to construction to property management.  The 80’s brought about projects in the residential, office, hospitality, mixed-use, and both freestanding and full shopping center retail spaces across 17 states.  Cedarwood became recognized as a national real estate company.

One of Cedarwood’s largest projects of this decade was Sterling’s (now Signet) corporate headquarters, the parent company of Kay Jewelers, Zales, Jared, Banter by Piercing Pagoda, Diamonds Direct, Blue Nile, JamesAllen.com, Rocksbox, Peoples Jewellers, H.Samuel and Ernest Jones.  Signet’s offices now span over half a million square feet of real estate.

1980-Cedarwod-Development

More Growth & Expansion

The 1990s brought more growth and expansion to the Cedarwood Companies.  Most of the projects were focused on the retail and hospitality industries.  Cedarwoods footprint spanned approximately 32 states across the country and numerous regional offices in addition to the corporate headquarters still located in Akron, Ohio.

2000-Cedarwood-Development-Companies

A New Millennium, New Retail Power Centers

Cedarwood’s main focus in the new millennium was on retail power centers and program development.  Many of the shopping centers Cedarwood developed, they still own and maintain today. Many of the projects designed and built in this decade included some of the top national anchors such as Sam’s Club, Dick’s Sporting goods, Walmart, Kohl’s, Target, Toys ‘R’ Us, Best Buy and The Home Depot, just to name a few.  Some of the companies Cedarwood has had the fortune of working with closely through their program development division have been Borders, Office Max, CVS, Q the Sports Club, Jared the Galleria of Jewelry.  Even through the economic downturn of late 2007 through mid-2009, Cedarwood was able to continue to stay focused and remain one of the top developers in the US.

A Shift to Multifamily Communities

In staying cognizant of the ever-changing real estate industry, Cedarwood shifted its focus to multifamily communities. Five of Cedarwood’s ever expanding portfolio of communities were designed, developed and built at this time.  Cedarwood also continued to work closely with their growing book of program development clients which grew to include Chase Bank, Advance Auto and Stripes Convenience Stores and Gas Stations.  In 2018, Cedarwood moved its headquarters out of Merriman Valley in Akron, Ohio to their beautifully renovated suites in Fairlawn, Ohio.

2020-Cedarwood-Companies

Celebrating 50 Years of Commercial Real Estate Development

In 2022, Cedarwood had the laudable pleasure of celebrating their 50th year in business!  Cedarwood still continues to have many multifamily community projects and has even expanded on some of their existing projects to include additional neighborhoods.  Their base of projects has also expanded to include senior living communities and self-storage facilities.  Even through a world-wide pandemic, Cedarwood continued to thrive and persevere through the downshift in business felt around the world.  The company continues to look for opportunities across the industry and has several multifamily communities planned for future development.  To date, Cedarwood has developed projects in most of the states across the country.

'I survived for 3 days in an air pocket on sunken boat - I could hear friends being eaten alive'

As families of missing passengers onboard the Bayesian superyacht cling to the air pocket theory, the Mirror takes a look at people who survived underwater in air bubbles

Harrison Okene survived 60 hours at the bottom of the ocean

  • 11:58, 21 Aug 2024
  • Updated 13:02, 21 Aug 2024

The families of loved ones missing from the sunken Bayesian superyacht are holding out hope for air pockets - though the reality of living in one is terrifying.

In the early hours of Monday morning, the 56-metre luxury yacht, carrying 22 passengers, sank off the coast of Italy after it was suddenly hit by a tornado . Fifteen people have been rescued and one person - chef Recaldo Thomas - has tragically died, while six people - including British technology tycoon Mike Lynch and his teenage daughter - remain missing.

Divers from Italian emergency services continue to look for those who have not been accounted for - but time is running out. The sunken vessel currently sits fully intact on its starboard side around 165ft underwater on the seabed. Due to its location, experienced divers can only explore the wreckage for around 12 minutes at a time.

With a maximum of two to three days before the situation becomes fatal , relatives are fearful. However, it is possible that survivors are trapped inside, thanks to air pockets that may have stopped them from drowning. Vincenzo Zagarola, a spokesperson for the Italian Coastguard, said: "We think they are still inside the boat, that is our very hard idea."

Harrison Okene, then 29, astounded the world when he survived three days in a capsized boat in May 2013. He was working as a ship's cook off the coast of Nigeria when a wave hit the boat and sent it 100ft under the water. Harrison struggled to escape and instead settled in an air pocket in one of the bathrooms - for 60 hours.

"The air couldn't go out of the boat completely. Some had to be trapped inside," he told The Guardian last year. He kept his head in the small pocket of air near the ceiling, and shut away in the dark, he could hear his colleagues "calling and crying" as they tragically drowned and were eaten by sharks. He survived on a tin of sardines and a can of cola.

Harrison had consumed so much salt water that his throat throbbed and his tongue peeled, while crayfish bit his legs and arms. But he remained calm by praying and singing church songs. "I tried to kill the fear in front of me," he said. "Because one thing that can kill you fast is fear. That panic that comes at you, it kills you before your real death comes. Because the moment you start panicking, you use too much oxygen."

He had no idea how much time had passed when he became aware of a "reflection of light" and saw a diver. Video footage from the camera on the diver's helmet revealed the moment Okene is saved. The diver initially assumed he was dead and said: "We found one, yeah." But then he feels Okene's hand grip his and says: "He's alive! He's alive!"

Okene would have died if he had returned straight to the surface, so he spent the following three days in a compression chamber. But his terrifying experience didn't put him off the sea. In 2015, he decided to retrain as a diver. He said: "I have faced a lot of my fears in my life, and I decided to face this once and for all."

Meanwhile, sailor and businessman Tony Bullimore famously survived four days in a capsized boat during a solo round-the-world race. The former Royal Marine, who died aged 79 in 2018, was dramatically rescued off the coast of Australia during the Vendée Globe race in January 1997. He was suffering from dehydration and mild hypothermia and had lost the top of a frostbitten finger.

For 140 hours, the then-57-year-old remained crouched in the hull of his upturned yacht in the freezing Antarctic Ocean, eating chocolate and drinking water to stay alive after finding an air pocket. Tony, who lived in Bristol, was feared to have drowned until a ship spotted the yacht and raised the alarm. Tony's first request after being rescued was a hot cup of tea.

Of the moment his boat capsized, Tony said: "I was sitting there with cup of tea and then bang, the keel popped off. The moment it banged off, the boat went over so quick. Then it rolled and rolled and rolled." He continued: "Then I was standing on the bottom of the boat and for most of the night it was okay. Then the window went in and water started coming in like Niagara Falls."

Tony fell back on his military training and made a makeshift hammock from cargo netting in a tiny air pocket of the upturned boat. After his rescue, an Australian military spokesman said his survival was "remarkable". In 2017, Tony remembered the Australians who saved him. He said: "I owe my life to Australia, I'll never forget what their great people did for me."

Who Was on the Sunken Yacht? Tech Mogul Mike Lynch, His Family and Friends.

Mr. Lynch, the former chief executive of the software firm Autonomy, who was acquitted on fraud charges in June, was with friends and family when the yacht went down in a severe storm.

Mike Lynch, in a suit and carrying a leather briefcase, is walking toward a building.

By Michael J. de la Merced

Michael de la Merced reported on Mike Lynch’s career and legal battles over the course of 13 years across two continents.

A cruise on the Mediterranean Sea aboard a superyacht was supposed to be a celebratory event for the British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch , who was acquitted in June of fraud charges tied to the sale of his company, Autonomy, to the tech giant Hewlett-Packard.

Instead, it turned into a disaster after the yacht, a 180-foot boat called the Bayesian, sank off the coast of Sicily in a violent storm. Of the 22 people aboard, 15 were rescued and seven others died . Search operations ended on Friday after the final body was recovered from the site of the sunken yacht .

Here’s what we know about the passengers.

Mike Lynch and his family

Mr. Lynch, 59, is a British software entrepreneur who had once been described as his country’s Bill Gates. He founded the software firm Autonomy, which analyzed clients’ unorganized data, and turned it into one of the most prominent British technology companies of its time. He became a widely known corporate leader, who advised David Cameron, the British prime minister at the time, and joined the board of the BBC.

In 2011, Mr. Lynch sold Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion, which was far above its market value, earning him hundreds of millions. But HP investors almost immediately soured on the transaction, and the American tech giant quickly fired its chief executive — and then Mr. Lynch.

HP later accused Mr. Lynch of misleading it about the state of Autonomy’s business, setting off a decade-long legal ordeal for the British executive, who denied the accusations. U.S. prosecutors charged him and other executives with fraud, and Autonomy’s chief financial officer was convicted in 2018.

Despite appeals to the British government, Mr. Lynch was extradited to the United States last year and was confined to a townhouse in San Francisco ahead of his criminal trial, which began in March. Facing the possibility of decades in prison if convicted, Mr. Lynch and another colleague were instead acquitted of all charges.

An official in Palermo, Sicily’s capital, said on Thursday that Mr. Lynch’s body had been recovered. His wife, Angela Bacares, 57, accompanied him on the yacht, and she was rescued on Monday when it sank. She was a consistent presence at his trial in the United States. Records show that she controlled Revtom, the company listed as the owner of the Bayesian.

The body of Hannah Lynch , Mr. Lynch and Ms. Bacares’s 18-year-old daughter, was thought to be recovered on Friday.

The other guests

Jonathan Bloomer, 70, chair of Morgan Stanley’s international arm and the chairman of Hiscox, an insurance provider that trades on the London Stock Exchange, was on the yacht when it sank, along with his wife, Judy Bloomer, 71. Their bodies are thought to be among those recovered, but Italian authorities have not identified them.

Christopher J. Morvillo, 59, a New York-based partner at the international law firm Clifford Chance, was also on the yacht. A former federal prosecutor who comes from a family of prominent lawyers, Mr. Morvillo represented Mr. Lynch during his criminal trial in San Francisco. His wife, Neda, 57, was with him on the yacht. Their bodies are also assumed to be among those recovered.

“We are in shock and deeply saddened by this tragic incident,” a representative of Clifford Chance said in a statement.

Surviving passengers rescued from the yacht include Charlotte Golunski, a partner at Mr. Lynch’s venture firm, Invoke Capital; Ms. Golunski’s husband, James Emslie; and their one-year-old daughter Sophie. Also rescued were Ayla Ronald, a lawyer at Clifford Chance, and her partner, Matthew Fletcher.

The yacht had a crew of 10, and nine were rescued. The body of the chef, Recaldo Thomas, was recovered from the water, the Sicilian Civil Protection Department said.

Elisabetta Povoledo contributed reporting, and Kitty Bennett and Susan Campbell Beachy contributed research.

I haven't actually had any work done here yet, but I'm totally going to come back if anything pops up with my teeth. The first thing that really hit me was how cool the phone chat was before I even showed up. They went all out to give me a solid guess on what I might need to pay, which was pretty awesome because I've never had that kind of heads-up from a dentist before. They are always like "they can't give me any estinamte until I come in and Take X-ray" When I dropped by just to get some X-rays done, they laid out a few treatment options for me, each with its own breakdown of costs. It was super clear and straight-up, no pressure to jump into anything. They were like, "Hey, take these estimates and compare them with other places if you want." That kind of confidence and openness? Big fans
