The 6th Thailand Yacht Show offers fun-filled weekend in Pattaya

The 6th Thailand Yacht Show offers fun-filled weekend in Pattaya

The much-awaited Thailand Yacht Show (TYS) is now in full gear at the prestigious Ocean Marina in Pattaya, Thailand.  The Show, regarded as Asia’s premier boating showcase and now in its 6th edition, has been a nautical calendar fixture for many years, and the excitement has stemmed from the fact that it had to be shelved for over 2 years due to the Covid pandemic.

Seen at the Opening Ceremony along with Mr. Andy Treadwell, CEO of Verventia Co., Ltd., the Show’s organizer, were H.E. Mr. Mohamed Jinah of The Maldives Embassy, Dato Steve Cheah, Diplomatic Council Head of Mission for Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam, Ms. Wiparat Tharateerapab, Director of Strategy & Planning Division of the Ministry of Tourism & Sports, Sub. Lt. Pramote Tubtim, Pattaya City Manager and Acting Mayor of Pattaya City, Mr. Songwut  Apirakkhit, Executive Director, Investment Management Division of the Eastern Economic Corridor Office in Thailand (EEC), Mr. Pierre Jaffre, Advisor to the EEC, Mr. Pairat Sukngam, Assistant Director of the Pattaya Office of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), to name but a few of the distinguished guests.

“We are delighted to be staging Asia’s first boat show in nearly 3 years even though it is a much smaller show than we are accustomed to organizing.  But this is because it is such a buoyant boating market at the moment - several of our longtime supporters have already found themselves with no boats left to sell.  Nearly all the major yacht builders in Europe have to ramp up their production as their distributors have sold out and are now taking orders for delivery in the middle of next year and beyond. Even the ever-popular MYBA Charter Show in Barcelona last month had less than 20 yachts on display when they usually have around 100 major superyachts at the show”, revealed Mr. Treadwell. The global yacht charter market was valued at US$10.91 billion in 2020, and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 25.6 percent from 2020 to 2028.

“In this respect, we would like to sincerely welcome FLS Yachting Worldwide, a fast-developing international marine transport and logistics company based in Asia, to our Show as our new Official Yacht Transport Partner, joining our Official Insurer, AXA Thailand General Insurance, to further support our campaign to grow yachting and yacht tourism in Thailand and Asia”, added Mr. Treadwell.

Highlights of the TYS – THE BOATS & YACHTS

The Thailand Yacht Show in Pattaya will nonetheless still offer visitors a fun-filled weekend outing.  For yachting enthusiasts, Simpson Marine will have 9 yachts on display, and provide opportunities for adults and children alike to try out its Sailing Academy dinghies and also sign up for future lessons.  Princess Yachts’ exclusive distributor, Boat Lagoon Yachting (BLY) will not only showcase the first magnificent Princess Y78 to establish Pattaya as its home port, but also on display will be 2 other boats – Jeanneau NC33 and Cap Camarat 9.0WA.  An exclusive special 15% discount off yacht charter bookings in Phuket will be offered only to visitors who reserve the trip during this Show.

Also, making its debut in Thailand is the beautiful, ultra-luxurious sport-fly, the Riva 76 Perseo Super, presented by V Yachts Asia alongside the new-style Ferretti 500, which can be customized to reflect two different moods – ‘Classic’ and ‘Contemporary’.  According to Ferretti, “The extensive change initiated with the Ferretti Yachts 500 project transforms the entire sailing experience into an absolute sensation of well-being that engages all the senses.”

Also, not to be missed and presented by Motorium is COX’s revolutionizing CX0300 diesel engine outboard, and the environment-friendly state-of-the-art ePropulsion electric outboard engines

MGC Marine & Charter (Asia) Co., Ltd, the sole distributor of the luxury Italian Azimut Yachts and a staunch supporter of the Thailand Yacht Show (TYS) from its inception, is using TYS to launch the latest addition to its portfolio – the evocative US brand, Chris-Craft, which has been building luxury boats and yachts since 1874.  Although the Chris-Craft yacht will not be arriving in time for the Show, a 1-meter model will be at the MGC booth for admiring and pre-booking.

Other world-famous yachting brands such as Sunseeker, Gulfcraft and Silent Yachts will also be showcasing models only of their latest products with brochures to assure buyers that they can order the yacht of their fancy, and, of course, there will be plenty of their boats available to charter.

Highlights of the TYS – THE FUN

The lifestyle elements of the Thailand Yacht Show are just as impressive and exciting. Jetboard Thailand will showcase its latest award-winning premium and sustainable water-related lifestyle surfboards and Leines electric boats – a welcome alternative to jet skis and petrol jet surfing -- as well as the world’s smallest safety buoyancy aid.  Visitors can also have trial jetboard rental sessions on site at the Show, but pre-booking is essential via LINE @jetboardthailand. Rates are THB 1,400 for 15 mins and THB 2,000 for 30 mins., including instructions.

Great Earth International (GE), the expert in coffee products and a food service provider and distributor, representing premium brands such as Lavazza, Rocket Espresso, S.V. Italia, Schaerer, Compak, Gryphon Tea, Vedrenne, Spiegelau, Eurocave, de Buyer and Tramontina, will be offering very special deals including Lavazza coffee with a special menu of  “Lavazza Caffe Melon” as well as a coffee capsule machine promotion set.  In addition, and only at the Thailand Yacht Show, will you be entitled to purchase Eurocave wine cellars and cabinets at specially discounted prices along with a one-time 5% discount offer for the popular Rocket Espresso coffee machine.

During the 4-day event expect spectacular music by award-winning DJ Chozie and LIVE performances by the fabulous showgirls from Pattaya’s very own Alexa Beach Club, a multifaceted venue featuring a 200-seat restaurant, indoor and outdoor dining options, a rooftop lounge for private functions, exclusive sunken booths, indoor showers, spacious changing rooms, private lockers and 100 daybeds around a fun-sized, 600 sqm infinity pool looking over its 2,000 sqm private beach.

And after such a fun and hectic time, stop at the Miskawaan Health Group (MHG)’s booth, and select a personalized healthcare service combining comprehensive state-of-the-art diagnostics and 100% natural ingredients for long-term preventive healthcare to refresh and rejuvenate.

Open from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. every day with free admission, those interested to come and join the fun at this Asia-Pacific premiere yachting event can pre-register via https://thailandyachtshow.com/registration/

New two-show format for the Thailand Yacht Show 2022

By Nina Done   30 March 2022

Celebrating the first boat show in South East Asia for over two years, organisers of the Thailand Yacht Show have confirmed this year’s sixth edition will now be staged across a two-show formula, marking a considerable step change to their annual format of the show.

New format for 2022

Representing a significant extension to their 6-year yacht show portfolio, organisers confirmed the new bi-annual event will be held in Pattaya and Phuket at either end of the yachting season.

It is understood that the main drive behind this development is to reach a wider audience, ensuring the Thailand Yacht Show will be “bigger, more representative of the whole of the industry, and far more easily accessible to visitors from all over Thailand”, as well as to exhibitors and stakeholders from all sectors of the yachting industry.

Ocean Marina, Pattaya

The first event will take place between the 9th - 13th June on the region’s east coast in the Gulf of Thailand. The show will be staged at the world-class Ocean Marina in Pattaya, where upgrades and extensions are being finalised in time for the show.

The major focus for the Pattaya event will be on production yachts and the domestic market, although organisers say they will include “as many superyachts as are available in the area.”

The show will be bigger, more representative of the whole of the industry and far more easily accessible to visitors from all over Thailand

Ocean Marina Yacht Club in Pattaya, Gulf of Thailand

Special features will include the newly refurbished Ocean Marina Yacht Club, a diving exhibition, live sailing and boating experiences, plus sea trials on high-quality charter yachts. Organisers say they currently have 22 yachts booked in, and are expecting over 50.

2nd TYS event in Phuket

The second instalment of the show will take place in December on Thailand's west coast at its major superyacht hub on the island of Phuket, with exact dates and location yet to be confirmed.

This part of the show is intended to focus on the fleet of foreign-owned vessels that are expected to arrive in the latter end of the year to enjoy Thailand 's celebrated cruising grounds during the traditional yachting winter season.

Yacht rentals in the Gulf of Thailand

The cruising grounds of the Gulf of Thailand are some of the most spectacular in the world, offering myriad tranquil beaches, secluded lush rainforest-clad islands and year-round balmy temperatures.

Some of the popular hotspots include the celebrated islands of Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, as well as the breathtakingly beautiful Mu Ko Chang and Mu Ko Ang Thong National Marine Parks.

Palm Beach International Boat Show

For superyacht shoppers, the Palm Beach International Boat Show, kicking off its four-day run this week, is set to break records with more than 60 yachts over 100 feet long on display. Last year was also a banner year for superyachts at the show.

Headliners will include the likes of the 295-foot Corsair Nero ,  the 278-foot Victorious by AKYacht, the 230-foot Turquoise-built Talisman C , and 213-foot Benetti Triumph among brokerage yachts, and in new yachts, the 113-foot Ocean Alexander Puro 35 is making its world debut.

There are so many gleaming white vessels over 100 feet, in fact, that the fleet will be split between the Palm Harbor Marina at the main show site on the downtown West Palm Beach waterfront and the Safe Harbor Rybovich Marina two miles north.

Now in its 42nd year, PBIBS will also showcase hundreds of models of dayboats, cruisers, and fishing boats, as well as marine accessories. Running from this Thursday through Sunday, the show coincides with the Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary art show, a fortuitous opportunity for yacht owners wanting to add new art to their collections.

Here are 10 must-see boats at this year’s show.

Corsair Yachts ‘Nero’

thailand yacht show

The undisputed star of this year’s Palm Beach show? That would be the 295-foot, classically styled superyacht Nero , built in 2007 and inspired by American financier J.P. Morgan’s legendary 1930s steamer Corsair IV . Nero ‘s attendance at PBIBS marks its return to the charter market after an extensive refit in 2021. Now better than new, the boat is being managed by Burgess. With weekly charter rates from $497,000, the vessel offers five-star accommodations for 12 guests in six cabins, with pampering from a crew of 20. Part of the refit included a full interior refresh by Italian interior designer Laura Pomponi, plus a major focus on wellness. That meant the construction of a new, state-of-the-art gym and spa, the assistance of a certified onboard trainer, a masseuse and beautician. After PBIBS, Nero will spend the winter in the Caribbean before returning to the Med for the summer season.

Ocean Alexander Puro 35P

thailand yacht show

Ocean Alexander is debuting the first of its new Puro superyacht series at PBIBS. The 113-foot Puro 35P comes from the drawing board of Italian designer Giorgio M. Cassetta and is a step back from the polarizing lines of OA’s recent Revolution and Explorer series with their bold, vertical bow designs. Aimed at long-distance cruising, the 35P can carry over 5,000 gallons of fuel and is powered by twin 2,000 hp MAN V12s for a 24-knot top speed. Twin 55kW Kohler generators can also keep the yacht powered at anchor for long periods. Other standout features include extensive glazing in the chiseled fiberglass hull, a forward deck plunge pool, and spacious accommodations for 10 guests.

Think of it as the “starter” Sirena. Aimed at a younger demographic, the Turkish builder’s brand-new Sirena 48 is making its U.S. debut at PBIBS after a global reveal at last fall’s Cannes boat show. Such is its appeal that 27 hulls have already been sold, with 13 of the orders coming from North America. Looking like a scaled-down version of Sirena’s popular 58, its distinctive, trawler-style lines are from Argentinian designer Germán Frers. With more interior space than a typical 48-footer, the yacht offers three staterooms—plus a crew cabin—a spacious, light-filled salon, a large cockpit, an oversized flybridge, and a vast forward social area. Take your pick from twin 550 hp Cummins QSB, or 670 hp Volvo D11 turbo diesels. Or the builder is also offering hybrid power with twin 285 hp electric motors charged up by variable-speed generators that are good for a 30-mile battery-only range.

Feadship ‘Olympus’

thailand yacht show

Picture purchasing a classic 180-foot Feadship superyacht, and then getting a $10 million bill for a major refit. That was the case with Olympus , built by the Dutch masters at Feadship in 1996 to a design by Britain’s Andrew Winch and the celebrated naval architect Frits De Voogt. Sold in 2022, the new owner sent it to the Monaco Marine refit center in La Ciotat, France for a major makeover. It included overhauling the 2,600 hp Caterpillar engines and generators, repairs to the structure, substantial upgrades to the guest areas and crew quarters, and new paint throughout. With the work completed just last year, the vessel is said to be in mint condition. Offered jointly by brokers Fraser and Edmiston, Olympus has an asking price of $28.5 million. With accommodations for 16 guests in eight cabins, the boat’s highlights include two primary suites, tropical-spec air conditioning, and Palm Beach-chic decor.

Benetti ‘Triumph’

thailand yacht show

Italian yachting powerhouse Benetti is showing off its superyacht-building skills with the 213-foot Triumph . Delivered in 2021, this Giorgio M. Cassetta-designed steel-and-aluminum world girder features six decks, a 1,400-square-foot primary suite with outdoor terrace and adjoining lounge, a 750-square-foot beach club, and a touch-and-go helipad. What sets Triumph apart, however, is its lavish interior furnishings put together by the owner along with Benetti Interior Style and Monaco-based Green & Mingarelli Design. It includes pieces by French glassmaker Lalique, marble from Marfil, Statuario and Armani, furs, silk and wool carpets, plus a collection of cool black-and-white wildlife photographs by British fine art photographer David Yarrow. The pièce de résistance? That would be the owner’s Triumph Bonneville motorcycle displayed in the salon.

Fjord 39 XP/XL

thailand yacht show

Germany’s Fjord Yachts, part of the Hanse Group, has a new 39-foot day boat that it’s unveiling at the Palm Beach show. The 39 XP and XL keep all the bold design cues of the bigger Fjord 41 XP and XL, like a big, open cockpit, walkaround center console, vertical bow, mile-high windshield and stretched hardtop. As for the differences between the XP and XL, it’s all about power. The XL comes with a choice of twin 320hp Volvo D4 diesels, or bigger 440 hp D6 versions, both with Volvo stern drives. Likely more appealing to U.S. buyers will be the XP powered by twin 400 hp Mercury Verado V10 outboards giving a 50-knot top speed. Pricing starts at around $500,000.

Turquoise ‘Talisman C’

thailand yacht show

Chandeliers don’t come more dramatic than this. Cascading down the central spiral staircase of the Turkish-built, 231-foot superyacht Talisman C , this jaw-dropping piece of art comprises an array of multi-colored glass balls threaded on stainless-steel rods and illuminated by hanging fiber-optic strands. It’s the creation of Prague-based Crystal Caviar and is one of a number of glass installations on this sleek, low-profile superyacht. Built in 2011 by the Proteksan Turquoise shipyard, Talisman C was designed inside and out by London-based studio H2 Yacht Design, with naval architecture by Italy’s Hydro Tec. With cabins for 12 guests, one of its highlights is a huge primary suite, which boasts more crystal chandeliers and a private library. Twin 2,447 hp Caterpillar diesels give a top speed of 18 knots and a transatlantic range of 7,000 nautical miles at 12 knots. It’s listed with Burgess for $59.9 million.

Sanlorenzo 44 ‘Kamakasa’

thailand yacht show

Delivered in 2020 and sold to a new buyer just last August, the 146-foot Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy Kamakasa will be for sale at PBIBS. The asking price, through the Italian Yacht Group, is $23.75 million. Lack of use might also be the issue here; the yacht’s twin 2,600 hp MTU V16 diesels have a mere 289 hours on the clock. Built in aluminum to a design by Rome-based Zuccon International Project, Kamakasa was the second hull in the Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy series. One of the top features is a primary suite that spans three levels and almost 1,600 square feet; it also comes with a private Jacuzzi, separate bathrooms, a walk-in closet, and a private study. The yacht’s lightweight construction and MTU power combine to deliver an impressive 20-knot top speed.

Bahama 41 GT2

thailand yacht show

As ultimate, reel-’em-in, fishing center consoles go, the Bahama 41 from West Palm Beach-based Bahama Boat Works is as hard-core as they come. But when owners kept asking for a little more comfort for the family, the builder responded. The result is the brand-new flagship 41 GT debuting at PBIBS. While the proven, wave-slicing hull stays the same, the cockpit layout is new. In place of the single bench seat, there are now three-across bucket seats with a second row behind. The wider console now has space for a pair of 22-inch Garmin screens, while the new extended hardtop features sun shades and even a rain shower. Outboard choices stay the same with either twin Mercury V12 600s, or four 400 hp Mercury V10s, good for a 65-knot-plus top speed. Pricing is from around $920,000.

Heesen ‘Book Ends’

thailand yacht show

Launched in 2022, this 164-foot Heesen is part of the Book Ends collection, owned by an American couple who have had more than 18 yachts with the same name. The exterior design of this Heesen was by Omega Architects, while Dutch studio Van Oossanen did the naval architecture. The yacht is part of Heesen’s fast cruising series, which is more efficient than other vessels its size, and can reach 23 knots at full speed with its MTU 16V 4000 M65L engines. The yacht is listed through Ocean Independence for 42 million Euro, or about $45.7 million.

A look at the most expensive superyachts at the Palm Beach yacht show and their insane features, from basketball courts on deck to ice baths and saunas

  • The Palm Beach International Boat Show kicks off later this week.
  • Eight megayachts are expected to be on display for would-be buyers and charter customers.
  • These are the show's biggest yachts — and how many millions of dollars they are going for.

Insider Today

The Palm Beach International Boat Show — the yacht world's flashiest event stateside — is returning this year with over 800 boats for both deep-pocketed potential owners and window shoppers to peruse.

While it's impossible to know what exactly will be on display until the show begins on Thursday, it's expected that eight megayachts — generally defined as ships over 60 meters long — will be docked at the show and at nearby marinas like the Rybovich Marina in the ritzy Florida town.

Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to charter in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).

These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show and nearby marinas, in size order.

Nero: 90.1 meters

Price: From $497,000 a week (charter) Standout features: Pizza ovens, beauty salon, massage room, resistance pool

Reportedly owned by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien, Nero is modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship , and was built in 2007 and updated in 2021.

She now boasts a gym on her sundeck with multiple cardio machines and a beauty salon, and has an on-board beautician for manicure, pedicure, hair, and massage needs. There's also an upgraded movie theater, two new pizza ovens, and both a pool and a jacuzzi.

For those who want to go overboard, she has more than a dozen toys, including a waterslide, Jet Ski, and flyboard.

Victorious: 85 meters

Price: From $876,600 a week in the summer and $950,000 a week in the winter Standout features: Hammam (Turkish bath), wine cellar, wood-burning fireplace, children's playroom

Victorious brings a party vibe to the yacht show. With a beach club on board, a wine cellar, a cigar clubroom , multiple bars, and a lounge with a piano, the vessel is made for entertaining. Plus, there's a playroom and movie theater to entertain the kids.

For tamer charter clients, Victorious has a suite of wellness features such as a gym, massage room, beauty salon and hammam — perhaps a custom request of her owner, Turkish businessman Vural Ak.

She also boasts a treasure trove of water toys, including Jet Skis, jetsurfs, inflatable kayaks, and scuba equipment.

Casino Royale: 72 meters

Price: TBD Special Features: Infinity pool, helipad, private jacuzzi

Purchased and refitted by car dealer magnate John Staluppi last year, Casino Royale is the latest of his James Bond-inspired yachts (he's also owned an Octopussy and a Skyfall, among others).

Casino Royale has a helipad that turns into a dancefloor, an infinity pool, and a wellness center with a gym and sauna. The owner's cabin has its own deck, which features a private bar and jacuzzi.

However, the boat's price isn't listed, and while she's not necessarily officially for sale, that might change depending on who's prepared to buy, Mr. Bond.

Talisman C: 70.6 meters

Price: $60 million (or from $567,000 a week to charter) Special features: Massage and beauty room, private library

Likely the largest yacht for sale (not just charter) at the show, the Talisman C is a 2011 six-bedroom boat. The owner's cabin comes with an en suite bathroom, dressing room, private library, and crystal chandeliers.

Amenities include a gym, a beauty room, oversized jacuzzi, and a fully equipped bar. Her crew of 19 includes a trained masseuse, and the toy room comes equipped with a wakeboard, eFoil , and WaveRunners.

Joy: 70 meters

Price: From $650,000 a week Special features: Disco club, basketball court, onboard fitness instructor

Superyacht Joy testifies to the fact that owners want as many on-board experiences as they can get.

There's an expansive suite of fitness features, including a basketball court (don't shoot that hoop too hard!), a personal trainer on staff, boxing equipment, and a handful of machines. For post-workout winddowns, there's a spa with a steam room and onboard masseuse. And for entertainment, there's both an outdoor and indoor cinema, and a disco club.

Triumph: 65.4 meters

Price: From $707,600 a week in the summer and $650,000 a week in the winter Special features: Sauna, helipad, banana boat

This 2021 superyacht is named after Triumph motorcycles — a reported favorite of her rumored owner, British businessman Chris Dawson — and even has one on display as an art piece in the upper deck's lounge. The primary suite is 1,400 square feet and has its own study , and there's a sauna, an indoor-outdoor gym, a helipad, and a massage room spread among her six decks.

She boasts an "armada of water toys," including two kinds of Jet Skis, electric water bikes, and a banana boat.

Seanna: 64.5 meters

Price: $54,000,000 (or from $462,000 a week to charter) Special features: marble foyer, movie room, sundeck pool

The recently refurbished Seanna is available for sale and charter.

Her indoor-outdoor gym is on sea level so that passengers can take a dip after a session with the onboard personal trainer. There's also a sundeck pool, a helipad, a two-room massage facility, and, for the more cerebral guests, a library with an electric fireplace.

There are a number of toys on board, including a popular water trampoline and two WaveRunners.

Come Together: 60 meters

Price: $65,000,000 Special Features: DJ and videographer on board, ice bath, sauna

Next-to-new yacht Come Together is looking for a new owner after doing charters during the 2023 season.

The Beatles' influence is evident beyond the yacht's name, with guitars dotting the sky lounge and a crewmember who doubles as a DJ. There's also an outdoor cinema and bar for entertainment and an ice bath and sauna for the day after the party. The owner's suite has a private study and lounge, and each guest cabin has its own ensuite.

The sale includes a number of toys, like Jet Skis, kayaks, and Seabobs.

Thailand International Boat Show

Thailand’s Boat Show Story

Thailands Boat Show Story

It’s hard to imagine something as straightforward as a boat show causing endless controversy – but that has been the case almost since Thailand’s first show, Phuket International Marine Expo (PIMEX), held in 2003 at the Phuket Boat Lagoon (PBL).

The brainchild of Image Asia managing director, Grenville Fordham, and his business partner Andy Dowden, the idea of a boat show in Phuket initially attracted doubters in droves. “They’ve got no experience” and “It would be risky giving them deposits” were just two of the anti-show cries heard from industry naysayers.

But built on the growing dissatisfaction expressed by returning Boat Asia (Singapore) exhibitors, the idea gathered momentum and supporters. Small by international standards and exclusively under canvas onshore, with not a great many boats in the water, Thailand’s first-ever boat show was, nevertheless, hailed as a success by domestic and international exhibitors.

The timing was crucial; the following year, industry efforts to reduce taxation on imported boats were wildly successful; the 200+ percent levies previously applied were reduced to just 7% VAT, heralding the real beginning of the exponential growth of Thailand’s (and particularly Phuket’s) leisure yachting industry – and at the same time ensuring that boat shows in Phuket had strong future potential.

Thus, PIMEX ran smoothly at PBL, under the Image Asia banner, in December every year until 2006 with an unchanged format, and with gradually increasing numbers, variety and quality of exhibitors. Then, in 2007, ownership of the show passed to Andy Dowden’s Andaman Marine Consultants (AMC) and it relocated to Royal Phuket Marina (RPM), no longer under canvas. Visitor numbers, however, remained fairly static at somewhere between 3,000 and 4,000, as it became clear that attracting large numbers of overseas visitors to a show in Phuket was, perhaps, a challenge too far.

Nevertheless, following international media exposure of PIMEX 2007, the expanding Informa Yacht Group (IYG) acquired ownership of the show, retaining AMC to run things on the ground. PIMEX 2008 went ahead, still in December and still at RPM. Under the IYG umbrella, great new things in terms of marketing were promised – with consequential improvements in quantity and quality of visitors – but with no substantial growth in either, albeit with a glossier, more professional, presentation.

Around this time, industry voices clamouring for different dates reached fever pitch and a change from December to January was agreed. With no show in 2009, PIMEX 2010 and 2011 were staged in January with a claimed 25 percent increase in exhibitors, but still finding it difficult to rise above the customary 3,000 to 4,000 visitors. Responding to contrary exhibitor claims that January was not, after all, the best time to run the show, the next four years saw PIMEX swing backwards and forwards between January and March, the organisers doing their best to please everyone.

Then, suddenly in or around 2015, Informa decided to exit the boat show business. PIMEX ownership reverted to AMC and PIMEX 2016 went ahead as usual in January at RPM, but under the looming shadow of a brand new – and competitive – show, the following month.

The inaugural Thailand Yacht Show (TYS), held in February 2016 at Phuket’s Ao Po Grand Marina (APGM), was the brainchild of former IYG mover and shaker Andy Treadwell and appeared set to drive PIMEX out of business. For the local industry, however, this was an unwelcome move; it meant either doubling their annual Phuket boat show spend or making a difficult choice between a known entity and the newer, evidently glossier, alternative. The TYS ‘claim to fame’ was massive government support and a key element of its marketing platform focused on the temptingly lucrative superyacht sector.

For the first time, the strident industry call, “Does Thailand need another boat show?” resonated around Phuket’s marinas. The prevailing opinion was resoundingly that Phuket, certainly, did not need two boat shows. But it had them.

PIMEX 2017 went ahead at RPM in January and was followed again, this time at a more decent interval, by the second TYS in December. Come January 2018, we find Andy Dowden’s AMC teaming up with Olivier and Gael Burlot, organisers of the Singapore Rendezvous, to present the all-new Phuket Rendezvous 2018 at RPM, which looked suspiciously like its predecessor, PIMEX, with a touch more pizzazz.

Not to be outdone, TYS 2018 went back to its original killer timing, closely following the Rendezvous in February, again at APGM.

Something clearly had to give. Phuket now had three separate entities organising two different boat shows three years in a row, stretching both the budgets and the patience of Phuket’s leading yacht brokers, amongst others. And something was done.

An unlikely partnership between Andy Treadwell and the Burlot brothers – who had been doing battle in Singapore with the former’s Singapore Yacht Show and the latter’s Singapore Rendezvous – conceived the Thailand Yacht Show & Rendezvous 2019, held at RPM. This brought to an end the brokers’ nightmare of two competing boat shows on this small holiday island, while almost incidentally bringing to an end Thailand’s original boat show, PIMEX.

The harmony, however, was short lived. The following year saw Andy Treadwell, through his new organising company Verventia, win the battle of the boat shows and stage, without visible partners, the TYS 2020 at RPM. Everyone breathed a huge sigh of relief that there was, once again, just one Phuket boat show in the island’s most suitable venue.

Then Covid-19 changed everything. TYS 2021 was, unsurprisingly, cancelled along with Verventia’s more mature Singapore Yacht Show. Uncertainty reigned and a boat show void appeared, at least in the understanding of the latest entrant in Phuket’s boat show battles.

Believing (based – we understand – on discussions with various involved parties) that TYS was not going to happen again, in mid-2021 David Hayes, CEO of event organisers JAND Group, launched the inaugural Thailand International Boat Show (TIBS), to be held in January 2022 at RPM. Unfortunately for JAND, a combination of Covid uncertainty and the renewed spectre of two Phuket boat shows resulted in the postponement of TIBS until January 2023.

In the meantime, TYS has announced a new partnership with Ocean Marina to run the Thailand Yacht Show – Pattaya in April 2022 and has plans to run the Phuket version of TYS during 2022 on a date and at a venue yet to be confirmed.

Taking a step back, during the almost 20 years of boat shows, Phuket has not had things all its own way. Pattaya’s Ocean Marina staged its own boat show – Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show (OMPBS) for eight years from 2012 to 2019, attracting for the most part locally based exhibitors, with some from Phuket and other parts of Thailand adding to the mix. The last OMPBS was held pre-Covid in November 2019.

Other tentative forays into Thailand’s troublesome boat show business have included Singapore’s Boat Asia, which staged a one-off ‘Boat Thai’ at a major Bangkok exhibition centre. More recently, a show-within-a-show was staged – ‘Join Boat Platform’ – at Bangkok’s Motor Expo in 2020 and 2021. This new event attracted a sprinkling of trailer boats, water toys and some of the bigger boat brokers, all hoping to tackle successfully the huge, so far untapped, potential of the Thai market for leisure boating.

Where to from here? It would take a far more accurate and robust crystal ball than this writer’s to predict Thailand’s boat show future. But if history is anything to go by, it seems that the country’s leisure yachting businesses may face yet another round of ‘too many boat shows’ once the Covid disruptor has passed into relative insignificance. The only consistent and predictable element of every Phuket boat show past, and probably future, is that difficult to budge visitor count. Hail to he or she who can get 10,000 quality visitors through the gate!

Spectacular multi-million dollar yachts — check! Balmy, waterfront location — check! Family-friendly exhibitions and fun — check!

Then it must be the 42nd annual Palm Beach International Boat Show, which cruised into West Palm Beach this week. The city’s waterfront Downtown was transformed into a yachters’ haven, filled with ultra-luxurious yachts and cruisers and a seemingly endless range of yachting-inspired activities.

This year some 800 boats and yachts participated in the show, which is expected to lure over 55,000 total visitors along with 600 brands. In total, the four-day show is anticipated to pump over $1 billion into the economy of the Palm Beach area, which has seen both its population and popularity surge since the pandemic.

“Beyond its economic significance and standing in the industry, the Palm Beach International Boat Show holds a special place in the hearts of local residents, revered as one of the region’s must-attend events,” said Alyssa Freeman, executive director of the Marine Industries Association of Palm Beach County (MIAPBC).

The show supports a series of satellite events such as the Winward VIP Club, with an open bar, gourmet dining and special pop-up activations. The Super Yacht Show Palm Beach at Palm Harbor was where the show’s most glamorous — and truly gargantuan — superyachts are on display. At the AquaZone, which is presented by Nautical Ventures, guests can enjoy a “show within a show” via an interactive experience featuring a wide range of water sports and cutting-edge, marine-related products.

“The Palm Beach International Boat Show holds a special place in the hearts of local residents.”

As always, the Show delivers an exceptional array of culinary experiences, including world-class cocktails provided by sponsors such as Goslings Rum. The Show also includes a series of education seminars that appeal to visitors of all ages, including the Hook the Future’s Kids Fishing Clinics with Captain Don Dingman, who demonstrates various fishing techniques while showcasing a wide variety of fish species. Participants get a free Hook the Future x Carolina Skiff rod and reel combo.

But it’s really all about the boats. Here are five of the most unique, intriguing and eye-popping vessels on display.

The lucky charm

Interior of a room on the Talisman C.

Few yachts at this year’s show are as jaw-dropping as Talisman C. Designed by London-based interiors aces H2 and manufactured by Turkish master yacht-builders Proteksan Turquoise, it’s currently listed for sale by British yachting firm Burgess for a cool $59.7 55 million. Spanning just over 231 feet long, it features six full-sized cabins that can sleep up to 14 guests, including a sprawling owner’s suite with its king-size bed and crystal chandelier, massive walk-in closet and grand library (which can easily be converted into an additional cabin).

Upstairs, the yacht’s sundeck features a large glass-encased Jacuzzi, sun beds and dining area under the sun or stars. A chic swim platform allows for easy access to the azure seas while the nearby aft deck area includes a fully equipped bar with club seating as well as a full-size dining area capped by a glass-threaded chandelier.

The vessel is powered by a pair of 2,447hp Caterpillar diesel engines, which provide a top speed of 18 knots, a cruising speed of 15 knots and a transatlantic range of 7,000 nautical miles.

The emperor

Exterior shot of Nero.

Reaching just under 300 feet in length, the Nero is, without doubt, one of the most eye-catching vessels at the entire Palm Beach show. Although completely contemporarily designed and manufactured, the Nero embodies the look and aesthetic of classic boats from yachting’s golden age during the 1930s. Fully overhauled in 2021, the Nero — which is currently on the market for just under $500,000 per week via Burgess — was designed in the spirit of Corsair, a yacht launched in the 1930s that belonged to legendary Wall Street financier J.P. Morgan.

Inside, it could not be more luxurious. On the top deck is a world-class gym fitted out with equipment by Technogym, while a few steps beyond is a beauty salon, which comes with an in-house beautician and masseuse.

There are six cabins with room for 12 guests — along with an on-board Jacuzzi, pool and waterslide. Throughout, veteran yacht designer Laura Pomponi has updated and upgraded the Nero’s look, introducing a range of new handmade carpets, along with hardwood floors, new sofas and elegant art-works. Pomponi has also lent her hand to Nero’s distinctive 30-foot Corsair custom-built tender that has been refitted so guests can arrive in impeccable style.

The secret agent

Exterior of deck aboard Casino Royale.

As its name suggests, the 236-foot Casino Royale brings a large dose of Bond-like elegance and intrigue to West Palm Beach. Constructed by Italian master shipbuilder Tankoa in 2018 and given a top-to-bottom retrofit in 2022, Casino Royale includes six cabins for 12 passengers and has been awarded a slew of industry accolades for its innovative and forward-thinking technology and aesthetic. Nearly two dozen crewmembers tend to those lucky voyagers, which luxuriate in an on-board circular swimming pool and access the ship via a helicopter port.

The yacht’s primary suite is nothing if not grand, featuring 180-degree views from its king-size bed along with its own study and al fresco terrace with private sunbed and Jacuzzi. There are five additional guest suites — all with their own private baths. Just beyond is an open-air living layout complete with a range of bespoke contemporary furnishings across the boat’s nearly half-dozen passenger decks.

Outside the amenities are just as abundant and include an onboard beach club with a lounge, bar, sauna, terrace and hammam/shower. All are ideal locations to rest and recharge after a workout in the yacht’s wellness center. On the main deck, there’s a nearly 20-foot-long infinity pool, while that helipad can easily convert into a dance floor.

The love boat

Completely futuristic and totally cool, the 180-foot-long Come Together is the ultimate example of stealth wealth on the high seas. Completed just two years ago by the Dutch firm Amels and currently on the market for a cool $65 million, Come Together features an unmistakable architecturally styled exterior reminiscent of a city-center skyscraper.

The boat can house up to 14 guests and 13 crew members within its unmissable steel hull and an aluminum-clad super structure — all cruising at a top speed of 15.5 knots.

The boat’s expansive master suite is set within its main deck and features sprawling storage space, a dressing room as well as his and hers bathrooms. There are an additional VIP cabin, two double cabins and two further cabins that can operate as twins or doubles. Up top, there’s a fully equipped gym and Jacuzzi — while a set of Jet Skis, water skis and hover-like Seabob watercraft keep the fun going just off deck. Come Together’s unique underwater lighting system also delivers a strong dose of excitement come nighttime and is the perfect way to enjoy an after-hours swim.

Want more? Then don’t forget about the on-board wakeboards, paddleboards and snorkeling equipment. And, when the moment strikes to head from the boat to land, travel could not be easier thanks to an easy-access 30-foot Limo Tender.

The cordial cruiser

Exterior of Hospitality.

The aptly named Hospitality ticks off the right boxes when it comes to superyacht bells and whistles. This twin-engine beauty can house up to 16 passengers along with 11 crew at a maximum cruising speed of 24 knots. Built back in 2011 by Westport Yachts here in the US, Hospitality — which is currently on the market for just under $30 million — underwent a comprehensive retrofit in 2021.

Along with all of the requisite yachting toys — Jet Skis, Seabobs and paddleboards — Hospitality includes a grand private owner’s suite with its own private relaxation balcony, seven cabins along with a relaxation room that can be used as a gym or spa and meticulously designed public spaces across is handful of decks. There’s also a handy tender for quick — or, not so quick — jaunts to the shore for dining and shopping.

Hospitality mostly cruises the Caribbean to New England, making the most of Northern Hemisphere winters.

Yachtapalooza, 1-day Chicago boat show on Far South Side, 'perfect for aspiring sailors'

Christian Piekos Image

CHICAGO (WLS) -- It might be a chilly spring day, but hundreds are getting ready to set sail at the 25th Yachtapalooza at Crowley's Yacht Yard on Chicago's Far South side.

Grant Crowley is the owner of Crowley's Yacht Yard.

"This is a get spring going for us," he said of the yearly one-day boat show.

Crowley is knotting together different sailing organizations from all walks of life stretching Chicago's nautical community.

From hands-on seminars and demonstrations, highlighting the vital how-tos of sailing, to budget-friendly boats on sale, organizers say Yachtapalooza is perfect for aspiring future sailors.

"We have 12 seminars going on. We even have sail makers here teaching how to trim your sails," said Crowley.

Yachtapalooza also supports nonprofit organizations like No Salt Sailing that helps veterans heal from unseen wounds through sailing.

"Once you get out there and the sails are up, you turn off the motor, there's nothing like it in the world for tranquility," said No Salt Sailing founder William Shehan. "I've done meditation, I've done martial arts, I've done all those things and it is an act of meditation."

Mt. Carmel High School is also showcasing its newly-formed sailing program. They want to recruit young sailors eager to get on board.

"Just to see them accomplish things, watch them become more confident in what they do. Appreciating the value of teamwork, learning new skills, just the whole ball of wax," said Bob Szyman, Mt. Carmel Sailing.

The weather might be brisk now...but these sailors have their compasses set on a warmer horizon.

"There's nothing more sublime than being two miles out on Lake Michigan in a sailboat, beautiful day, sun's out and we've got our gorgeous skyline in the background. You can't beat it," said Szyman.
