This superyacht hot spot for the uber-wealthy is heating up — and becoming more dangerous

The storm that sank the “Bayesian,” a luxury yacht anchored off the Sicily coast, was sudden, violent and deadly — and scientists say it may be a warning of what’s to come as global warming fuels more extreme weather in the Mediterranean.

The superyacht, which was carrying 22 people, sank in the early hours of Monday morning, near the port of Porticello, claiming at least five lives . Rescue operations are still ongoing, hampered by the difficulties of reaching the vessel, which is resting on the sea floor approximately 165 feet deep.

The incident has shocked many. The Mediterranean, prized for its crystal clear, tranquil waters, is a prime summer destination for the very wealthy and their superyachts.

But these waters can still be dangerous — one of the reasons thousands of people die every year trying to migrate across it — and experts say it’s only becoming more so as human-caused climate change warms the sea, whipping up stronger and more intense storms.

The reasons for the sinking of the Bayesian are still being investigated. “It was dark and no images are available,” said Luca Mercalli, president of the Italian Meteorological Society.

But many believe the yacht was struck by a waterspout — one of several types of tornadoes. The coast guard reported the yacht was struck by a tornado, and a waterspout was reported to the European Severe Weather Database around the same time. Storms that day resulted in at least two dozen waterspout reports across Italy.

Waterspouts are narrow spinning columns of air below a thunderstorm which happen over water, and thrive on heat and humidity.

Most waterspouts are fairly weak “with a few seconds of strong, gusty winds before they move on or dissipate,” said Peter Inness, a meteorologist at the University of Reading. “But some can be much stronger.”

There aren’t huge amounts of data about waterspouts as they often happen unobserved out at sea, but there is evidence ocean temperatures can affect them. A study by University of Barcelona scientists, which was focused on Spain’s Balearic Islands, found waterspouts are more likely when the ocean is very warm.

However, drawing a link between climate change and more frequent or more intense waterspouts “is a step too far at the moment,” Inness said. They require several different conditions to form in addition to heat, including winds and temperature differences between the air and sea.

What is clear however, is that climate change is leading to more intense storms, some of which are fueled by warm ocean water.

And the Mediterranean is currently very, very hot.

Water temperatures around Sicily are approximately 30 degrees, Mercalli said. That’s 3 degrees Celsius (5.4 Fahrenheit) warmer than average for this time of year — an “extreme” anomaly, he told CNN.

While ocean heat is affected by natural climate fluctuations, such as El Niño, scientists are clear that it is being supercharged by human-caused global warming driven by burning fossil fuels.

When oceans are hot, they are able to inject more energy into the atmosphere. This can be converted into strong winds or rapid updrafts of air in thunderstorms, Inness said. Warm air is also able to hold more moisture, so when storms produce rain, it can be heavier and more intense.

There has been an increase in heavy thunderstorms dumping large amounts of rain, as well as downbursts — strong winds that descend from thunderstorms — in Italy and worldwide over the past few decades, Mercalli said.

The storm that hit Sicily reached the Mediterranean from the west, where it gained energy from high ocean temperatures, said Justino Martínez, a researcher at the Institute of Marine Scientists in Spain.

Spain’s Balearic Islands were particularly affected. Torrential rain last week flooded roads, forced evacuations and flight cancellations and overturned yachts moored on the popular island of Formentera.

The storm then gained more energy before reaching Italy, Martínez told CNN. In addition to the waterspout, other strong storms across Sicily brought torrential rainfall late Sunday, dumping more than 100 mm of rainfall, or 4 inches, in Brolo in less than four hours.

The Mediterranean region is on the frontlines of the climate crisis. Dubbed a climate change hot spot , it’s warming around 20% faster than the global average. And the toll is clear in the extreme weather the region is experiencing, from brutal rolling heat waves to ferocious storms bringing catastrophic flooding .

“Global warming — and specifically warming of the Mediterranean Sea — is quite likely to lead to an intensification of a number of potentially dangerous weather systems in that region,” Inness said.

Italy, surrounded by the fast-warming waters of the Mediterranean, is particularly affected. Last year, a downburst hit a ship on Lake Maggiore in northern Italy, killing four people.

The country also grappled with “ once in a century” deadly floods that killed at least 14 people in May last year, while Sicily hit 48.8 degrees Celsius (119.8 Fahrenheit) last August, breaking Europe’s temperature record.

Outside Italy, last year’s Storm Daniel, fueled by unusually warm ocean waters , claimed lives in Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria. But by far the most devastation from the storm happened in Libya.

Flash flooding killed thousands of people following a so-called medicane — a rare, hurricane-like cyclone in the Mediterranean that gains energy from warm water.

“Global warming is intensifying all extreme weather events,” Mercalli said, “with huge costs for people and society.”

A body found near a luxury superyacht that sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday is believed to be that of chef Recaldo Thomas.

Divers are continuing the search for six missing people, including British technology tycoon Mike Lynch and his teenage daughter, who were aboard the Bayesian which is resting on the seabed at a depth of around 50 metres.

Rescuers appear to have entered the yacht, but it is not immediately clear what stage the search is in.

The yacht sank on Monday after it was battered during intense storms off the coast of Palermo .

A male body, believed to be that of Thomas, was recovered on Monday.

Search efforts have extended into a second day, with the Italian Coastguard saying their "very hard idea" is that the missing individuals are "still inside the boat".

Asked about the likelihood of them being alive, a spokesperson said: "Never say never, but reasonably the answer should be not."

Those involved in the searches have now revealed the complexities facing them.

Specialist rescue divers are only able to work 12-minute long search shifts due to the depth the 56-metre vessel is believed to be resting at.

Marco Tilotta, a firefighter diver from Palermo, told Italian media that divers were unable to gain access because of floating furnishings and other debris inside the yacht.

He said: "It looked like a scenario similar to the Costa Concordia on a smaller scale. Unfortunately, these are very complicated searches."

The Costa Concordia cruise ship sank off the island of Giglio in 2012 and claimed the lives of 32 crew and passengers.

On that occasion, divers had to navigate inverted corridors, leaking fuel and floating debris during their search of the wreckage.

The Bayesian was carrying 22 passengers - 10 crew members and 12 passengers - at the time of the incident.

Who survived the incident?

Fifteen people, including Mr Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, were rescued, according to local media.

The other named survivors are:

Charlotte Golunski, her husband James Emsley and their one-year-old daughter.

Mr Lynch's lawyer, Ayla Ronald, and her partner.

What is believed to have happened to the yacht?

The British-flagged superyacht capsized at about 5am local time on Monday morning off the coast of Palermo, when the area was hit by a waterspout.

A waterspout is defined as a rotating column of air and water mist, according to the US National Weather Service, and can appear similar to a tornado.

Who is missing?

Six of the 22 passengers, who were onboard the Bayesian at the time it sunk, remain missing.

Of the six, four are British and two are American.

The missing Britons include Mr Lynch, who founded software giant Autonomy in 1996, and was made an OBE for services to enterprise in 2006. His 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, is also unaccounted for.

Morgan Stanley International Bank Chairman Jonathan Bloomer has been named among the missing, alongside his wife, Judy.

In a statement, Morgan Stanley said it was "shocked and saddened" to hear of the news.

Additionally, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo, who worked for Mr Lynch, and his wife, Neda, have both been confirmed as unaccounted for.

A statement from Clifford Chance read: "We are in shock and deeply saddened by this tragic incident.

"Our thoughts are with our partner, Christopher Morvillo, and his wife, Neda, who are among the missing."

On Tuesday, the British ambassador to Italy, Ed Llewellyn, expressed his sympathy to the families of those involved in the incident, saying his "heart goes out to them".

He said: "I've spoken to some of the British survivors both yesterday and today - I want to express my deep sympathy from myself and colleagues at the British Embassy for what's happened.

"We're doing what we can to support them in this incredibly sad and difficult situation to help them with contacts from the Italian authorities at a practical level."

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch said four of its inspectors were being deployed to Palermo.

Mr Lynch, who has been frequently referred to as the "British Bill Gates" , was cleared of conducting a massive fraud relating to an $11 billion (£8.64 billion) sale to US company Hewlett Packard.

The Financial Times reported that Mr Bloomer appeared at trial as a defence witness for Mr Lynch, while media reports suggest the pair are close friends.

Ayla Reynold, a New Zealand national working at Clifford Chance, survived the ordeal.

Her father, Lin Ronald, confirmed to the Telegraph she had been invited aboard as thanks for assistance in Mr Lynch's recent court case.

A spokesperson for Mr Lynch said there was no comment.

It has since emerged that the co-defendant of Mr Lynch in his US fraud trial, Stephen Chamberlain, died after being hit by a car while out running on Saturday.

Gary Lincenberg, Mr Chamberlain's lawyer, said in a statement: "Our dear client and friend Steve Chamberlain was fatally struck by a car on Saturday while out running.

"He was a courageous man with unparalleled integrity. We deeply miss him.

"Steve fought successfully to clear his good name at trial earlier this year, and his good name now lives on through his wonderful family."

Bayesian completed a number of sailings in recent days, calling at various ports in Sicily, according to ship-tracking website VesselFinder.

The superyacht can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites, and is listed for rent for up to €95,000 (£166,000) a week.

It was built in 2008 by Italian company Perini Navi, and the vessel's registered owner is listed as Revtom Ltd, which is based on the Isle of Man.

Targeting super yachts owned by Russian oligarchs could hit a nerve in Moscow

Poor transparency around ownership of assets can cause challenges, experts say.

With sanctions levied and financial assets seized, Russian oligarchs have been scrambling to get their super yachts out of Western ports in search of safer harbours. 

One yacht, said to belong to Russian President Vladimir Putin himself, abruptly left port in Hamburg, Germany, just weeks before the Russian invasion of Ukraine prompted wide-reaching sanctions. Others were not so quick to leave European ports. 

Authorities in La Ciotat, on France's Mediterranean coast, seized a yacht they say is linked to sanctioned Russian oligarch Igor Sechin, the CEO of state oil company Rosneft. He was Russia's deputy prime minister from 2008 to 2012.

Industry watchers say oligarchs everywhere are trying to keep their yachts from being taken.

​​"There's a few yachts that we are watching at the moment in the Atlantic," said Sam Tucker, head of super yachts at the firm VesselsValue, which tracks and estimates the value of these giant luxury yachts. 

"I'm expecting some of them to start doing U-turns in the middle of the ocean," he told CBC Radio's Day 6 .

Western countries have imposed a punishing package of sanctions and export control restrictions on Russia in response to the invasion of Ukraine. Russia's biggest banks were hit, as was the country's central bank. Major state-owned companies and some of the country's wealthiest individuals have seen overseas assets frozen.

The investment bank JP Morgan Chase believes Russia's economy will shrink 35 per cent in the second quarter of 2022 and seven per cent for the entire year.

White House spokesperson Jen Psaki says the suite of sanctions is meant to make every aspect of life difficult on Putin and the oligarchs who protect him.

"What we're talking about here is seizing their assets, seizing their yachts and making it harder for them to send their children to go to colleges and universities in the West," Psaki said in a briefing this week. "These are significant steps that will impact the people who are closely around President Putin."

Symbolic target

The yachts themselves are worth hundreds of millions of dollars, but experts in Russian sanctions say this isn't just about the dollar value.

"They don't have much value compared to the total net worth of an oligarch," said Bill Browder, a long-time advocate for stiff sanctions against Russian oligarchs, in an email to CBC Radio. 

But they are "a highly symbolic attack on something coveted by the oligarchs."

These ultra-luxurious ships became a status symbol for the oligarchs as they amassed fortunes in the 1990s and early 2000s.

"There is a bit of oneupmanship," Tucker told Day 6 . He says the biggest and most expensive ships are cloaked in secrecy. They have extreme privacy and security features, including bulletproof glass, and some require crew to sign non-disclosure agreements.

But Tucker says the biggest security and privacy feature of all is the opaque ownership structure of the yachts. He says precious little information about who actually owns these ships is available.

"[Only] basic information is disclosed — for example, the registered owner — which is often a shell company or a 'special interest vehicle' registered in Monaco, Malta, [or the] Cayman Islands," he said.

Untying those knots is a notorious problem, but one usually confined to taxation issues.

"One thing that I think may come out of this whole situation is the increased call for transparency and transparent ownership," said Tucker.

Yachts on the move

So far, only four super yachts have been seized, including a 213-foot yacht owned by Alexei Mordashov in Imperia, Italy.

While authorities sift through the byzantine paper trail of ownership, other oligarchs have scrambled their crews to get the yachts to somewhere safe.

"One of the things I've been trying to figure out is, where do they go [next]?" asked Alex Finley, a former CIA officer living in Barcelona, in an interview with  As It Happens host Gillian Findlay .

This week, Finley tweeted photos tracking a ship said to be owned by Roman Abramovich, the Russian billionaire who owns the Chelsea Football Club.

"A lot of these yachts that we've been looking at are heading towards the Maldives or the Seychelles. A few are in Montenegro, but they look like they're probably going to be on the move," Finley said in the interview .

Neither the Maldives nor the Seychelles signed onto the sanctions, so the ships are probably safe from seizure there. Another major hub is Dubai.

"I think we're going to see Dubai as a big hotspot for these yachts," said Tucker. "It has hot weather all year round and … Russians can fly to Dubai without going through the EU airspace."

Tucker agrees that targeting the yachts is a symbolic move.

"It's really sending the message that they aren't untouchable. We've closed the skies on both sides of the Atlantic so their private jets can't operate, and now we're going after their super yachts," he said.

"I'd be feeling quite vulnerable if I was an oligarch right now."

The body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch has been retrieved from the wreck of his family yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily during a violent storm, a source close to the rescue operation says.

Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter Hannah is still unaccounted for, the source said.

The bodies of the other four people who vanished when the boat went down were recovered from the yacht on Wednesday.

The British-flagged Bayesian, a 56-metre superyacht carrying 22 passengers and crew, was anchored off the port of Porticello, near Palermo, when it disappeared beneath the waves in a matter of minutes after the bad weather struck.

Lynch, 59, was one of the UK’s best-known tech entrepreneurs and had invited friends to join him on the yacht to celebrate his recent acquittal in a major US fraud trial.

His body was brought ashore in a blue body bag and driven in an ambulance to a nearby hospital morgue.

Besides Lynch and his daughter, the other people who failed to escape from the boat were Judy and Jonathan Bloomer, a non-executive chair of Morgan Stanley International; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

Fifteen people, including Lynch’s wife, managed to get to safety, while the body of the onboard chef, Canadian-Antiguan national Recaldo Thomas, was found near the wreck hours after the disaster.

Specialist rescuers have been searching inside the hull of the sunken yacht for the past three days, but operations have been challenging due to the depth and the narrowness of the places that the divers are scouring, the fire brigade said.

It compared the efforts to those carried out, on a larger scale, for the Costa Concordia, the luxury cruise liner that capsized off the Italian island of Giglio in January 2012, killing 32 people.

The disaster has baffled naval marine experts who said such a vessel, built by Italian high-end yacht manufacturer Perini and presumed to have top-class fittings and safety features, should have been able to withstand such weather.

Prosecutors in the nearby town of Termini Imerese have opened an investigation and authorities have started questioning passengers and witnesses.

The captain, James Cutfield, and his eight surviving crew members have made no public comment on the disaster.

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of the Italian Sea Group , which includes Perini, said the Bayesian was “one of the safest boats in the world” and basically unsinkable.

He said he believed the disaster was caused by a chain of human mistakes and that the storm had been expected, in interviews with Italian media.

“The ship sank because it took on water, from where investigators will have to say,” Costantino told television news programme TG1 late on Wednesday.

Citing data from the yacht’s automatic tracking system and based on available footage, Costantino said it took 16 minutes from when the wind began buffeting the yacht, and it began taking on water, for it to sink.

PORTICELLO – The Italian coast guard said Thursday the body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch is among those recovered off the coast of Sicily from the wreckage of a superyacht whose builders had called unsinkable.

One woman remains missing. She has not been identified, but Hannah Lynch, Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, is reportedly unaccounted for . The family had been celebrating his recent acquittal on fraud charges with the people who defended him at trial in the United States.

Five others were recovered by rescue crews following Monday's tragedy.

The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early Monday as it was moored about a kilometer (half a mile) offshore. Civil protection officials said they believe the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout , and sank quickly.

Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor’s Office investigators were collecting evidence for a criminal investigation, which they opened immediately after the tragedy despite no formal suspects having been publicly identified.

The chief executive of The Italian Sea Group, which owns the Bayesian's manufacturer, told the AP in an interview on Thursday that superyachts like these are “designed to be unsinkable."

“And it is unsinkable not only because it is designed in this way, but also because it is a sailing ship and sailing ships are the safest ever,” CEO Giovanni Costantino said.

Costantino added that “obviously they must not hit the rocks violently, discarding the hull, and they must not take in water,” suggesting the second possibility was the most likely in this case.

Costantino also noted that sailing ships require “a greater competence” to be guided compared with motor boats.

Investigators are now looking at why the Bayesian, built in 2008 by Italian shipyard Perini Navi, sank while a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed . Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived by escaping in a lifeboat, including a mother who reported holding her 1-year-old baby over the waves to save her. They were rescued by the sailboat Sir Robert Baden Powell.

The sailboat's captain, Karsten Borner, said his craft sustained minimal damage — the frame of a sun awning broke — even with winds that he estimated had reached 12 on the Beaufort wind scale, the highest hurricane-strength force on the scale.

He said he had remained anchored with his engines running to try to maintain the ship’s position as the forecast storm rolled in.

“Another possibility is to heave anchor before the storm and to run downwind at open sea,” Borner said in a text message. But he said that might not have been possible for the Bayesian, given its 75-meter (246-foot) tall mast.

“If there was a stability problem, caused by the extremely tall mast, it would not have been better at open sea,” he said.

Yachts like the Bayesian are required to have watertight compartments that are specifically designed to prevent a rapid, catastrophic sinking even when some parts fill with water.

Lynch is the only person confirmed dead; the other bodies have not been formally identified by the Italian coast guard.

Besides Hannah Lynch, those missing are Christopher Morvillo, one of Lynch’s U.S. lawyers, and his wife, Neda; Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley’s London-based investment banking subsidiary, and his wife, Judy.

The body of chef Recaldo Thomas was the first to be recovered , on Monday. His death was confirmed by his family.

Friends of Thomas, best known as “Rick,” paid tribute to him on Thursday at a favorite bar in the Caribbean Island of Antigua. Cooking for Lynch was supposed to be one of Thomas' last jobs before retiring, his cousin, David Isaac, told the AP.

Divers have struggled to find the bodies in the yacht’s hull on the seabed 50 meters (164 feet) underwater.

“We would need a crystal ball to know when we'll be able to find the next body," said Luca Cari, spokesperson for the fire rescue service.

“It's very difficult to move inside the wreckage. Moving just one meter can take up to 24 hours,” Cari said.
