Ocean Alexander Based in Alblasserdam, Netherlands, Oceanco specializes in building 80-meter-plus (262-foot-plus) full-displacement, custom luxury megayachts.

Founded in 1987, the company (then led by CEO Richard Hein) originally built its yachts in Durban, South Africa, with fit-out taking place in various locations throughout the Netherlands.

Greek steel and shipping magnate Theodore Angelopoulos took over Oceanco in 2002 and propelled it to become a leader in the yachting industry. Today the company is owned by Dr. Mohammad Al Barwani, who acquired the organization in 2010.

Oceanco’s most recent build is the 290-foot (85.5-meter) motor yacht Nirvana that launched in early 2012, although its most noteworthy yacht is perhaps the 269-foot (82-meter) Alfa Nero , which was built for Angelopoulos.

The yard works with top naval architects and designers such as Adriel Design, Alberto Pinto, Andrew Winch, Azure Naval Architects, François Zuretti, Luiz de Basto, Nuvolari-Lenard, Sam Sorgiovanni, as well as up-and-coming designers like Igor Lobanov.

With exterior styling and interior design by Sam Sorgiovanni, the 290-foot (88.5-meter) five-deck Nirvana features a modern interior with natural fabrics and colors paired with teak, onyx, and eucalyptus.

The exterior offers up a pool, a hot tub off the master, an outdoor theater, as well as a helicopter landing pad. Six staterooms accommodate 12 guests. A large tender garage houses tenders and toys. Two MTU 20V 4000 M73L engines give Nirvana a top speed of 14 knots.

The 269-foot (82-meter) 2007 launch Alfa Nero pushed Oceanco to the limelight with its spectacular Alberto Pinto-designed interior and innovative on-deck swimming pool that drained at the push of a button to convert into a helipad.

The yacht accommodates 16 guests (12 for charter) and 28 crew. Azure Naval Architects penned the yacht, which features exterior styling by Nuvolari-Lenard. A pair of MTU 16V 595 TE70 engines power Alfa Nero to a 20-knot maximum speed and give it a range of 5,500 nautical miles.

Alfa Nero is available for charter as are these other great charter yachts: Lazy Z, Lady Lola, Indian Empress and Natita.

Where is Oceanco located?

The company operates in its extended production facility located in Alblasserdam in the Netherlands. The yard has almost unrestricted direct access via the inland waterway system to the North Sea. They also have an eco-efficient, state-of-the-art headquarters with the capacity to work on multiple large yachts and mega yachts of up to 150m (490ft) at the same time. Their sales, design and marketing teams are conveniently located in Monaco, the heart of Europe’s most popular cruising region, and Oceanco’s construction and refit site in Zwijndrecht is integral to their long-term initiative for growth, expansion and construction activity consolidation.

Who owns the Oceanco shipyard?

A lifelong love of the sea led Dr Mohammed Al Barwani to acquire not just one but two major shipyards, Oceanco and Turquoise Yachts. Over the past decade, Oceanco yachts has been behind some extraordinary and innovative yachts, including semi-displacement and full displacement yachts. Iconic Oceanco yachts include the 106.7-metre sailing yacht BLACK PEARL, 110-metre KAOS (formerly JUBILEE) and 90-metre DAR. “I am proud of every yacht that we have produced; we produce beautiful yachts,” Al Barwani said. Originally owned by a group of South African private investors, Oceanco is a relatively new shipyard in the yachting industry, having been founded in 1987. However, in their short existence, they have delivered several award-winning superyachts and now specialise in premium craftsmanship of some of the largest superyacht builds in the world

What is Oceanco’s largest yacht?

INFINITY is Oceanco’s largest motor yacht to date and the largest superyacht ever built in the Netherlands. The seven-deck boat has elegant interior and exterior spaces and can comfortably accommodate up to 16 guests. INFINITY has an unprecedented level of onboard comfort with a particular emphasis on low noise and vibration. She also features a state-of-the-art wellness area with a spa, sauna, gym and yoga studio. This large yacht also has first-class crew areas, mechanical systems and technology.

The Oceanco hull building process

Building an Oceanco yacht hull is like erecting a large 3D jigsaw. Steel plates are cut into detailed shapes that are then assembled into larger steel parts. In turn, these are welded to create sections of the yacht which are eventually joined to form the hull. Later in the construction phase, the superstructure is erected parallel to the hull. Usually, the superstructure is made from aluminium while the hull is steel, so they are built in different locations, with superstructure engineering and construction generally taking up to 12 months. Over the course of 12 to 16 weeks, the hull and superstructure are then fused together and result in the yacht being fully enclosed. Large systems and equipment like engines, generators and air conditioning plants must be positioned inside the hull beforehand.

Reverie by Winch Design for Oceanco

Oceanco has a well-earned reputation for building some of the largest and most recognizable superyachts in the world. But as I’ve learned during visits to their main shipyard in The Netherlands, and at various boat shows around the world, the Oceanco team is always looking for innovative new ways to design and build their special breed of superyachts.

So, I was intrigued when I saw Oceanco had launched its Simply Custom program that’s specifically designed to streamline the process of designing and building an 80-meter (262ft) yacht. Since 80 meters is the “sweet spot” for lots of new superyachts in build these days, I was hardly surprised to see their innovative new program focus on the 80-meter range.

But what did surprise me was just how “holistic” the Simply Custom program is because they’re introducing way more than just another new superyacht design. They’ve also partnered with Lateral Naval Architects and numerous other firms to design a state-of-the-art technical platform that’s ready to build today, while also being flexible enough to upgrade and modify as new breakthroughs in propulsion and other key areas come on line in the future

“We created Simply Custom because we saw there was a growing demand to build custom yachts in a new way. Owners still want the very best quality in their yachts, and to have something designed and built just for them. But many have less desire to focus on every detail in the process. They expect to entrust technical matters to experts like Oceanco and our partners. And, perhaps most importantly, they want building a yacht to be simple and fun,” explains Oceanco’s Group Marketing Director, Paris Baloumis.

But I have to be honest, Oceanco’s ability to have all of the world’s best yacht designers submit their vison for what the ultimate 80-meter superyacht might be the coolest thing of all. Here are just a few designs from Oceanco’s ultimate superyacht wish list !

Espen Øino explains the thinking behind his firm’s submission they call Clarity . “When asked to participate in designing a yacht for Oceanco’s Simply Custom Collection, my team and I were inspired by one word: SIMPLE! What does simple mean? To solve a problem in an efficient, elegant, and smart way.

“Inspired by this definition, we went off to solve some challenges in a simple yet smart way. The yacht features very large overhangs in the superstructure to provide shade and to reduce the heat gain inside the vessel on the decks below. The excess surfaces above we used for photovoltaic cells.

“The main deck lounge is designed as a large winter garden, which can be opened to make use of the wind as natural ventilation. The overall objective being to reduce the onboard energy consumption and increase the renewable part of the onboard energy production. The extensive use of large shaded exterior spaces reflects our vision of enjoying life at sea and the outdoors.”

Domino by Nuvolari Lenard yacht design

Domino pays homage to the decades of experience that Carlo Nuvolari and Dan Lenard have gathered along their award-winning careers at Nuvolari Lenard in Venice. An elegant simplicity is displayed the sweeping bow all the way to the graceful aft staircases that flank the swimming pool on the main deck. The curvaceous decks and glass bulwarks also give Domino a distinctive look.

“We believe Domino represents the state of the art, in terms of beauty and functionality,” says Dan Lenard. “While also offering an owner a starting point from which to create a yacht that is perfectly suited to an owner.”

Aurai Simply Custom 80 meter by Bozca

Timur Bozca describes his design like this. “An embodiment of two worlds merging, Aurai is named after ‘nymphs of breezes’ in Greek mythology. Its exceptional exterior is influenced by the lines of a swordfish – an expression of strength – that is softened by the fluidity of natural forms, evoking a balance between power and grace.

“At every step, our focus has been on creating an experience that transcends the ordinary. Aurai doesn’t just navigate the waves, it dances with them; offering a symphony of luxury, innovation and connection to the sea.

Superleggera 80m by Hot Lab for Oceanco Simply Custom

Superleggera 80, is the aptly named design from Italian design studio Hot Lab because its sexy and elegant lines are reminiscent of a 1960s automobile. While the architectural elements of glass, natural light and space provide a perfect connection between the interior and exterior of the yacht.

“At Hot Lab, we understand that today’s clients place higher value on how a space connects them to such deeper emotions, rather than simply serving a practical function,” says Antonio Romano.“ This is seen in the colossal 5m height of the Superleggera 80’s main deck atrium and the clean, sweeping lines of the yacht’s aft as the floor flows past the infinity-effect pool and glazed bulwark to the swim platform beneath in one uninterrupted curve.”

43m Pershing fast motor yacht Chorusline for sale

The 43.3-metre fast motor yacht Chorusline is newly listed for sale with Charles Carveles of Edmiston .

Delivered from the renowned Italian builder of fast yachts, Pershing , in 2019, this Pershing 140 is constructed of aluminium and was fully repainted in 2023. Her design is by Fulvio De Simoni with interior by Italprojects and naval architecture by Ferretti Engineering Department.

Chorusline is described by the broker as "like new" as she has only ever been used as a dayboat and her beds never slept in.

Accommodation for a party of 10 guests is arranged over four cabins, comprising a master suite, a double cabin and two twins with additional Pullman berths. There are quarters for a crew of seven in four cabins.

Presently, the main-deck owner's suite is used as an entertainment space with a dining room, bar and cinema room, connected to the saloon. This could easily be converted back to a cabin, all the plumbing and infrastructure being in place. Textured wooden panelling adorns the interior bulkheads, contrasting with dark wooden flooring, while abstract chrome sculptures and green items of furniture give the spaces a sparkle.

Her expansive sundeck sports a Jacuzzi and sunpads forward, an al fresco dining area, bar and ample space to lounge about, all protected by an awning. At sea-level, the fold-down hull openings and large swim platform make for a spacious open-plan, teak-decked beach club from where water toys may be embarked, the whole area easily reached via twin transom staircases from the aft deck.

Four 2,600hp engines, with less than 700 hours on them, give the 380GT low-draft, yacht for sale a top speed of 38 knots and the ability to accelerate from rest to 35 knots in under a minute.

Cruising speed is 28 knots and she has a range of 1,400 nautical miles at 10 knots. Her inventory includes a four-metre tender, two paddle boards and brand new stand-up jet ski

Lying in Hong Kong, Chorusline is asking $21,500,000.
