Tech Billionaire Launches ‘NetJet for Yachts’ With Fleet Miami

  • Facebook Twitter Instagram Pinterest Youtube

Avatar photo

The latest post from a Pursuitist guest writer.

MicroStrategy CEO Michael Saylor collects yachts the way some enthusiasts collect watches or cars. And when you make your living at the top of the tech world, it seems simple enough to launch a small company with a minimum $250,000 membership fee, right?

Well, for Saylor, it is. His newest venture, Fleet Miami , lets members purchase blocks of credits to be exchanged for charter across a fleet of luxury yachts, many of which are part of Saylor’s personal collection.

Buy in to rent the 154′, five-stateroom “Usher,” the acclaimed 147′, Feadship “Harle” with its crew of nine, the 87′ “Moksha” or the more manageable 35-passenger, 36′ “Julia” for a quick cruise around Biscayne Bay. Crave a trip, not just a three-hour tour? Buy a seven-day charter through the Florida Keys for  $70,000-$280,000, depending on yacht selection.

In a post on his personal Facebook page, owner/founder Saylor made light of his new venture, writing “think of it as NetJets for yachts, albeit more exclusive and less ambitious.” Nice one.

We’re excited to see where this new company sails in the coming months.

At Disney World, in addition to the offerings in its Premium Family Vacations and access to its Disney Signature Specialists for planning help, NetJets customers get special “animal experiences,” a private character experience meal,  as well as a dedicated VIP guide for up to four days and seven hours per day.

NetJets partnerships include Indycar and Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Club Magnolia during The Masters, offering valet parking, shuttles to the tournament, secure baggage storage, and refreshments. It is also the official private jet provider for the PGA Tour and PGA Champions Tour.

Superyachts are a hot luxury travel market

Superyacht charter is a hot segment of the luxury travel market. Ziriakus pointed to inquiries, which he said nearly doubled to 5,403 from 2,756 between 2015 and 2018.

Citing Boat International’s Market Intelligence, he said Northrop & Johnson is “the world’s top yacht brokerage” for yachts more than 75 feet in length. Over the past two years, it sold 105 megayachts and 215 yachts overall.

In terms of charters, he said the company books over 500 weeks of charters per year with an average value of $214,000 imputing more than $100 million in annual revenue on rentals. Ziriakus said the company currently has $1.2 billion in listings for sale.

The deal between NetJets and Northrop & Johnson isn’t the first between private aviation and yachting providers. Last year Magellan Jets said it was partnering with Worth Avenue Yachts, and in 2017 Air Partner joined Camper & Nicholsons to market air/seas packages.

Good times for NetJets

NetJets recently reported it is getting a boost in inquiries from owners of private jets due to the upcoming ADS-B requirements . The mandate which goes into effect in 2020 will make it virtually impossible to hide the identity of your private jet from trackers.

Using a charter or fractional aircraft means trackers, including competitors, can’t follow your whereabouts by monitoring flights via your tail number. In terms of fractional ownership, according to Traqpak, NetJets controls 64% of the fractional market.

Just last week NetJets said it adding the Phenom 300 to its jet card line-up giving it a true light jet solution . The Cessna Citation Excel/XLS, a midsize jet , had been its point of entry. It also added the Citation Sovereign to its jet card offerings.

On the fractional and lease side of its business, NetJets along with Flexjet and VistaJet is one of the few providers to offer globally-oriented large cabin fixed-rate, guaranteed availability solutions . According to its website, Northrop & Johnson offers charters to worldwide destinations.

A Yacht Charter Guide for First-Timers Presented by Northrop & Johnson

As more and more travelers seek out luxury vacation options that ensure exclusivity, security and peace of mind, many are opting for a luxury yacht charter. With its ultra-hygienic and self-sustaining environment, a luxury yacht charter is a safe sanctuary and affords guests a worry-free vacation.

netjets for yachts

As such, Northrop & Johnson has seen an influx of inquiries from first-time charterers looking for new and cautious ways to travel. Knowing that first timers will have many questions, Northrop & Johnson’s charter brokers have compiled a guide to help yacht charter newbies gain a better understanding of the yacht charter process as they prepare for a conversation with a charter broker.

We’ve included a sampling of the Q&A’s the guide covers, and the complete guide can be downloaded here: https://www.northropandjohnson.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/First-Time-Charter-Guide.pdf

What is yacht charter?

netjets for yachts

Whether you are looking for a family vacation in the Caribbean, an island-hopping adventure, or a safe and secure environment to celebrate with friends, a superyacht charter means doing things your way – your own timetable, bespoke itinerary, and favorite past-times in absolute luxury. The height of escapism, on board a superyacht charter you will experience a level of service and comfort that is unsurpassed, in settings beyond the reach of most.

netjets for yachts

What time of year should I charter?

There are two main seasons in yachting – summer and winter. The summer season runs from May through October, with the peak summer season (and peak rates) in July and August. The winter season runs from November to April, with peak season running primarily over the holidays and into New Year.

>  PRO TIP : SHOULDER SEASON CHARTERS ARE OFTEN A GOOD OPTION FOR THOSE LOOKING TO AVOID THE CROWDS IN THE MORE POPULAR CRUISING GROUNDS, AND YOU MAY HAVE MORE CHOICES IN TERMS OF YACHT.

netjets for yachts

Where are the most popular places to charter?

The most popular yachting destinations vary by season. During the summer, in the northern hemisphere, the most popular destination is the Mediterranean; locations such as the French Riviera, Balearic Islands, Corsica and Sardinia, Greek Isles and Croatia are favorites. During the winter months, The Bahamas and Caribbean are the top charter spots.

netjets for yachts

What type of charter experience do I want?

What type of yacht charter experience are you looking for? If you are looking primarily to relax and unwind, then a yacht with a spa and an onboard masseuse would be ideal. Alternatively, if your group is a family needing plenty of activities, then a yacht with plenty of water toys, onboard games and perhaps a dedicated movie room would be great for you. Your charter broker will assist you in identifying the yacht that has onboard all of the amenities that are important to you.

netjets for yachts

How big are the yachts and how many people can we bring?

Yachts can range in size from 80 feet to 300-plus feet and larger. Charter yachts can carry up to 12 guests maximum.

What type of yacht should I charter?

Think about the type of yacht that would best suit the size and character of your charter party. For example, a modern motor yacht is ideal for a family charter having plenty of space, while a sailing yacht would be a fantastic choice for a real yachting enthusiast. Browse through our portfolio of yachts for a better understanding of the most suitable vessel for you and your charter party, or talk to a charter broker for an informal chat.

netjets for yachts

How long should I charter for and how much will it cost?

Most charter durations range between seven and 14 days, with rates quoted by the week. During the peak seasons of July and August and Christmas and New Year, rates are usually higher, while most yachts also have low season rates in effect for the balance of the year. Prices differ from yacht to yacht and reflect a variety of factors such as size, year built and amenities onboard.

Are there additional expenses beyond the charter rate?

Depending on the type of contract used (MYBA and AYCA being the most common), the charter rate generally only covers the hire of the yacht and the crew and the Owner’s insurance. Everything else is extra, including provisions and fuel. An Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) is collected upfront to cover expenses and forwarded to the Captain who is strictly accountable for expenditures. The Captain will present a detailed summary of expenditures at the end of your charter and any unspent APA funds are refunded to you. Depending on the destination, other expenses might include taxes, VAT and delivery/re-delivery fees. Ask your charter broker to confirm the expenses that will be associated with your charter.

>PRO TIP : ADVANCED PROVISIONING ALLOWANCE (APA) EXPENSES GENERALLY RUN 25-30% OF THE CHARTER FEE.

How do I get to my yacht charter?

For those looking to avoid commercial transit and crowds, private aviation is an ideal option for getting to your charter destination. Northrop & Johnson’s partner NetJets is the global leader in private aviation for more than 55 years and can get you to your yacht in a safe, hygienic and comfortable way.

>PRO TIP : FROM STRESS-FREE CHECK-IN TO UNRIVALED SERVICE UP IN THE AIR AND THE FLEXIBILITY TO TRAVEL ON YOUR OWN TERMS, THERE ARE MANY ADVANTAGES TO FLYING WITH NETJETS FOR TRAVEL TO YOUR YACHT CHARTER.

netjets for yachts

How far in advance should I contact a charter broker?

Brokers recommend at least three to six months, and six to 10 months if booking for Christmas/New Year or peak Mediterranean season (July/August). As availability can change quickly, it’s important to contact your broker early on to ensure a broad selection of suitable yachts from which to choose. Popular charter yachts book as much as a year in advance.

Interview with Cory Valentine of NetJets

By Paul Joseph

The popularity of fractional ownership is growing by the minute, as people with means becoming increasingly aware of the financial and practical benefits of having access to planes, boats and homes, without the inconveniences of having to maintain them.

In 1986, fractional private jet ownership company NetJets was founded by Richard Santulli, becoming pioneers in the fractional ownership revolution. Today NetJets - owned by Warren Buffet's Berkshire Hathaway multinational since 1998 - has a fleet of more than 650 planes around the US, ready to collect its customers at just a few hour’s notice, and whisk them off to wherever they please.

Superyachts.com sat down with Cory Valentine of NetJets at last week’s Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show to discuss the company’s stratospheric rise, the benefits of fractional jet ownership to customers, and the synergy between private boats and planes.

Shari Liu, luxury director of superyachts.com, began by asking Mr Valentine to explain the NetJets business model.

“NetJets is the largest private aviation company in the world,” he said. “Basically what we offer is the service and benefits of owning your own aeroplane, but you don’t have the hassles, such as when it’s down for maintenance, or dealing with anything that goes along with owning your own plane, or boat obviously!”

He continued: “The reason why people prefer NetJets, rather than owning their own aircraft, is the benefit of only paying to get to the spot you’re going to, whereas if you own your own plane you’re bringing it back to wherever your home is based and you’re paying for both legs.

“With NetJets you’re able to go to the destination, stay for a day or for six months and it doesn’t matter. We’re bringing another aircraft in for you and you’re not paying for that time.”

Shari then asked Mr Valentine to elaborate on the aircrafts that comprise the formidable NetJets fleet

“We operate 14 different aircraft type,” he said, “anywhere from a 7-seater that would be your small Hawker 400 Citation Encore up to the mid-cabin aircraft doing coast to coast type travel.

“We actually unveil our first global 6000 made by Bombardier this Sunday so it’s a very exciting time.”

What about the synergy between superyacht owners and people that fly privately?

“The biggest benefit clearly is starting your vacation when you get on the aeroplane,” he said, “not after your land. Getting on a Gulfstream or Citation Sovereign or whatever it is to get to the island that the boat is currently at, you get on the plane and everything starts from there rather than five hours from there when you get to your destination, or 10 hours after delays.”

How does he feel people’s attitudes to fractional ownership are changing?

“The founder of NetJets actually founded the fractional concept back in 1996,” he said. In the past a couple of guys would have bought their own aircraft together, but now one would want to go to the Caribbean, and one would want to go to the mountains for the holiday it just doesn’t work, schedule-wise, it causes issues with friends and business partners.

“And it’s similar with a yacht, one family might want to go to different destinations. So having access to 600 aeroplanes across the country is one of the biggest benefits because you don’t need to have a scheduling conflict with a friend. Obviously it’s stretched to homes and other assets throughout the last couple of years and NetJets is definitely credited to having starting the industry.”

Finally, what is the craziest request NetJets have ever received?

“There’s a lot of animals that fly on our aircrafts,” he said. “I have many customers that fly with us only because of their dogs. They’d fly commercially when it’s just them and their wives.

“Once there was a dog flying by itself, with no humans, and they needed a piece of grass for the dog on the aircraft to go to the rest room while it was on the aircraft, which was rather interesting!"

Warren Buffett's private jet firm NetJets is suing its pilots' union over claims of defamation

  • NetJets has sued its pilots' union, accusing it of defamation over safety claims.
  • The union took out an ad referencing the Boeing blowout, but NetJets doesn't operate any Boeing planes.
  • "We view the lawsuit as an attempt to silence us," the union's president said this week.

NetJets, the private jet firm owned by Warren Buffett 's Berkshire Hathaway, is suing its pilots' union.

Filed Monday in an Ohio state court, the lawsuit accuses the union of defaming NetJets .

The company sells ownership shares in private aircraft, giving customers the right to fly for a certain number of hours with short notice.

The lawsuit claims the 3,400-member NetJets Association of Shared Aircraft Pilots (NJASAP) made false statements about the safety of the company's operations.

In 2023, NJASAP said that training is being conducted by people "who have little to no knowledge of NetJets' standard operating procedures and aircraft," per the suit.

It adds that this year, the union published an article saying NetJets "persists in its effort to draw down a once vibrant safety culture."

The suit also said that in late January, the NJASAP took out an ad in The Wall Street Journal referencing the door plug blowout on an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 Max , reading: "NetJets Owners: What if you looked out your window and saw a panel of the plane?"

That blowout sparked a crisis at Boeing as the planemaker works to improve its safety culture amid increased scrutiny from regulators.

However, NetJets doesn't operate any Boeing planes. Its lawyers said the ad was false and "clearly intended to alarm" customers.

NetJets is asking the court for unspecified damages and to prohibit the union from making more statements.

In a Wednesday press release, the NJASAP president, Pedor Leroux, said: "We view the lawsuit as an attempt to silence us."

"However, NJASAP has a federally protected right and an organizational and moral responsibility to our members — the NetJets pilots — and to our customers to raise safety issues, and we will continue to do just that," he added.

NetJets, in a statement shared with Business Insider, said it wouldn't comment on legal matters as its "focus is on providing the exceptional safety and service our owners expect and deserve."
