Neo Yachts conquers America and lands in Newport. Neo 430 Roma delivered

The result can be summed up in the delivery of boats that are ready to race and equipped with everything needed to do so with great performance. Construction quality and super-light materials.  The Neo 430 Roma weighs in at a third of the weight of a “standard” boat, thanks in part to expert design and the construction material, which we stress is entirely in carbon . To confirm this, we recommend reading one of our sea trials of the Neo 430 Roma, which you can find here. But there’s more, because Neo Yachts boats are already delivered ready to make the most of wind power. The synergy comes courtesy of Banks Sails, a family-owned company founded 30 years ago by Paolo Semeraro, which supplies all the sailmaking by providing qualified personnel. Also thanks to Banks Sails, the Neo Yachts yard is able to rig and fine-tune the mast in just two days from the launch, preparing the right sails and completing the operations in time for delivery to the owner. We’re talking about boats that are, we repeat, “ready to sail”.

It’s a process that in a ‘normal’ boatyard would require many separate entities: starting with the mastmaker who has to come to assemble the mast, the sailmaker, and all the interactions between the parts. These are issues that in 30 years of sailing, Semeraro has learned to know very well.

Neo Yachts at METS Amsterdam

The METS in Amsterdam, from 16 to 18 November, will also be the right opportunity to meet potential and existing customers from northern Europe. Neo Yachts will have its own booth at the B2B marine accessories show (EF.126). Paolo Semeraro explains that “METS will be like a meeting point in Amsterdam, where we can meet suppliers and get to know customers who have ordered boats but who, because of the pandemic or for other reasons, were unable to come to our boatyard and meet us directly”.

Proof of this is the high level of involvement that Neo Yachts is enjoying on social media and the excellent commercial results of this boatyard, which sells its boats almost exclusively through e-commerce and with the help of video calls. Once owners have seen the boat in the water, they are more enthusiastic and excited than when they had placed the order on paper. And from experience we can confirm that this is a real parameter that indicates how much the boat is really appreciated.

By the way, the comment of the owner who asked to see the third Neo 430 Roma in Newport , and will receive the seventh, can be summed up in just one word: “ Masterpiece” .

Carkeek and Neo Yachts have joined forces to produce a new cruiser / racer, the NEO 570c, with similar performance characteristics as a TP52

Product Overview

If you design and build a boat to look this wickedly fast, you better hope it performs. And it seems Shaun Carkeek and Neo Yachts have done everything they can to try to achieve just that by producing an 11.5 tonne 57-footer which has half that weight hanging in the bulb 4m below the surface! Their brief to produce a repeatable cruiser racer with the same speed, power and performance as a TP52, yet with a habitable cruising interior, always ensured this would be a fascinating project.

Paolo Semeraro, the head of Neo Yachts and Banks Sails, reports that the 570c has already performed very well in the light airs first trials. “Making 10.2 knots upwind is quite easy as well as reading 12.5 knots under code zero in less than 10 knots true wind speed.” He also says that the inclusion of water ballast on this first model really helps when sailing short-handed.

Semeraro stresses that, despite the fanatical attention to weight during construction, this boat is equipped for cruising, including comforts such as aircon, watermaker, bow thruster, induction cooking and a garage for a 3.3m tender. Yet it offers “performances in some cases higher than a TP52 for a very similar handicap.”

Some (not I), may find Carkeek’s distinctive and heavily chamfered forward sections too aggressive. The camber shape takes a chine from the lower stem all the way aft to form a chisel shape, which looks menacing when seen from bow on. But the success the South African designer found with the virtually untouchable stealth bomber-style Fast 40 Rán VII has ensured this has become a signature trend. We’ve seen the iconic shape now spin off onto projects such as the CF-520 (Oystercatcher XXXV being the first example) and the M72 in build at Mylius.

Nevertheless, this Neo 570c is the first production-style yacht to back up these looks with a seriously lightweight performance build. The full Gurit prepreg carbon hull is cured at 70ºC. The keel lifts to 2.8m, but also ensures low slung ballast when lowered to 4.2m, so it can offset 184m2 of upwind sail area – or over 400m2 with the A-sail set. The rig is made from hi modulus carbon, the hydraulics are by Cariboni.

The sailing photos and 3D imagery show a fastidiously flush deck, which includes mere bumps for coamings so it’s hard to envisage much cruising comfort. But the deck plan makes it easy to transform between racing and cruising modes, thanks to high speed electric winches and traveller and removable tables.

The flare to the aft quarters suits such a cool, angular design, while plinths for the runner and mainsheet rise vertically from the 45º angled deck. Transverse jib tracks leading right inboard allow for scything upwind sheeting angles.

Owners can choose varying degrees of interior fit out and comfort, including a stripped-out two cabin layout with open forepeak or a three cabin version with full owner’s suite forward.

“Although the 57ft size is calculated to be a corrected time winner in Mediterranean offshore races… from the same mould we can build a 60-footer (with different deck) to allow a third bathroom and racing in the minimaxi class,” Semeraro explains.

The Neo 430 ROMA is an IRC regulation-oriented cruiser/racer for both offshore and inshore racing, but can also perform well in ORCi and PHRF.

The overall size of 43 feet can also be used in the new Super 12 class in Australia.

It is an all round design in both light and stronger winds.

The shape of the hull comes from the experience of past Neo 400+ and 350 projects, perfected with CFD analysis and design, great attention has been paid to the volume distribution of the canoe body in order to have a boat that is always balanced and easy to sail.

The hull is wide with the maximum beam reaching up to the trasoom to maximise the righting moment from the weight of the crew.

CYD compared previous yachts and their design advantages to discover the latest hull and exteriors. This yacht will be an all-rounder that will sail well both up and down in all wind conditions.

Below the waterline, the hull is characterised by a narrow, low-wetted area shape and a round section with the intention of achieving low drag, especially at low speed.

Out of the water, at the bow, there is a lot of volume to create positive lift, which increases performance in downwind and transverse sailing.

The side of the design features a chine, already used in other CYD Neo designs.

This has a structural function and reduces windage.

From the maximum beam to the transom the yacht does not narrow.

This is an advantage for sailing upwind, as the crew can create a higher righting moment with their weight on the rail.

The deckhouse has the typical Ceccarelli design, like the 350 and 400+ models, with sleek lines and complete integration between deck and superstructure.

Internally, the Neo 430 ROMA has two options.

One more regatta-oriented and will be for hull 02 currently under construction for an Australian owner, and the other for a more Mediterranean cruising lifestyle which will be for hull 01 for a North Adriatic owner.

The yacht is built exclusively from female moulds for the hull and deck, laminated and infused with epoxy to maintain strength and rigidity. The construction also complies with all special ISO Category A and OSR regulations.

ROMA has 3 possible configurations for its appendages.

A double rudder system and a lifting keel that can reduce the draft to just 1.60 metres with the keel raised.

The lifting keel and hydraulic system were designed and built by Cariboni.

This configuration makes it possible to reduce the depth from -3.00 M to -1.60 M, which is very advantageous when mooring in shallow bays in the Adriatic, for example.

The draft of 3.00 M allows for a high righting moment, which, combined with the light dspl and high sail area, results in a very fast cruising boat that can reach 20 knots.

It can also have a high aspect ratio single spade rudder version with a fixed keel with torpedo bulb, built in high-strength steel. This option has a draft of -2.85 metres. The last appendage option is geared towards offshore racing as it is built with twin rudders, a fixed keel and torpedo bulb.

Once again CYD completed the naval architecture, engineering, interior and exterior design of this model, which was conceived together with Paolo Semeraro, head of Neo Yachts.

The name ROMA was chosen by Semeraro as a tribute to Italy and its heritage in quality design.

In general for a CAT to be FAST CRUISER or SPORTIVE and to give superior performance to an equally sporty monohull of the same length it must be:

The neo 560 cat according to the Neo Yachts & Composites philosophy, is fully built in carbon fiber composite in infusion and epoxy resin. Thanks to this technology it can be easily changed between fast cruiser and a racing machine just modifying few options . He represents the final point after many years of multihull research and building with various brands: began in 2006 and is still in constant evolution. A fast cruiser-racer where the design strongly takes into account the Neo Concept for a spacious, comfortable but f ast and light boat , reinterpreting the philosophy of the latest generation multihulls. Everything is designed and built to reach maximum lightness and strength , thus creating a distinctive design of taut and firm lines. The layout provides that the entire starboard hull of the catamaran is dedicated to the owner's accommodation. In place of the large walk-in closet forward of the downstairs, it is possible to obtain a third single bed. The skipper's cabin can be obtained in the bow. The port hull is dedicated to guests and features two spacious cabins. Each cabin is equipped with large wardrobes and spaces where you can store clothes and accessories. Each cabin has its own bathroom with separate shower. The saloon and the galley occupy a space of over 20 sqm and are organized in such a way that the large central island becomes a barycentric and distributing element between the cockpit and interiors both at sea and at anchor.
