We take a look at 7 of the best boat fenders on the market right now, which are available in various shapes and sizes

best-boat-fenders-buyers-guide

Doubling up your fenders can create a useful step

If ever there was an unsung hero in the world of boating, it surely has to be the humble fender. Ubiquitous and largely maintenance-free, fenders dangle fearlessly in the face of adversity, protecting the valuable and vulnerable hulls of their owners from miscalculations at the helm and the wayward actions of other boaters alike.

It follows, therefore, that fenders should not be regarded simply as ‘fit and forget’ items, but as integral safety components with the potential to protect against substantial damage-repair costs.

Consequently, it’s well worth reviewing the complement of fenders attached to your boat and asking questions such as: are they the right type and size? Do I have enough of them? Are they in a serviceable condition?

What to look for in a good set of boat fenders

In terms of type, side-hull fenders are most commonly cylindrical, ball or flat/cushion, while bows and transoms can be protected with shaped fenders made specifically for purpose. A commonly used sizing guide for cylindrical fenders advises between 25-50 millimetres diameter for every 1-1.5 metres of boat length.

The length of the fender itself will depend on the freeboard of the boat to which it is attached. A minimum of three fenders per side is recommended, with at least one placed every 3 metres along the length of the boat. A ball fender at the bow not only guards the sharp end from collisions but also comes in handy as a rover or when springing off pontoons .

Always ensure your fenders are pumped up to the correct pressure – generally between 0.15 and 0.2 bar – and show them some love by cleaning them regularly. That way, they will give you many years of service in return.

And lastly, if you’re too posh to pull, why not try an automatic fender system ?

Here’s our pick of the best boat fenders on the market today.

Best boat fenders available right now

best-boat-fenders-poloyform-g-series

Polyform G series boat fenders

Available in six sizes to accommodate boats from sub-10 feet to up to 40 feet in length, the Polyform G Series is a high quality, good looking product boasting an even wall thickness for strength and durability.

Moulded-in ribs add to the strength while also providing protection against abrasion. Manufactured from vinyl and available in no less than 16 colours, Polyform fenders have a unique valve designed to give many years of trouble-free service.

All G Series fenders have an eye at either end so they can be vertically or horizontally mounted.

best-boat-fenders-majoni

Majoni white/blue boat fenders, set of four

Our pick here is a bundle of four size 2 (15 x 56 cm) Majoni fenders. Described as being ideal for boats from 19-22 feet in length and supplied ready inflated, the deal listed below includes a complimentary set of fender ropes.

That means each fender and its rope comes in at less than £15 each, which we reckon represents good value by any measure.

The styling – a white body tipped with blue at either end – is a long-time boater’s favourite which adds a splash of colour to a fender set which might otherwise look a touch drab, especially after a season or two’s use.

Price: £57.49

best-boat-fenders-ocean-round

Ocean Series R round fender

Ocean’s Series R round fenders are heavy duty units, and as such are much favoured by commercial fishermen as well as recreational boaters. Available in a selection of eight sizes from R0 (22 x 30 cm) to R7 (100 x 138 cm), Ocean’s Series R caters for boats from 3 to 24 metres.

All Series R fenders have a rib-reinforced eye to ensure ropes are held securely and safely over the long term. The buoy’s one-piece construction, consistent wall thickness and UV resistance all add strength and durability to this well designed product.

And if white with a blue tip doesn’t take your fancy, R Series buoys are also available in red tipped with dark blue.

best-boat-fenders-anchor-marine

Anchor Marine standard fenders

Anchor Marine has been manufacturing fenders in the UK for more than half a century. Moulded in UV-resistant PVC and available in 12 colours in addition to base white, the company’s standard boat fenders are popular among commercial and leisure users.

Ruggedly constructed with a high resistance to bursting – due to what Anchor Marine describes as its ‘class leading wall thickness’ – each fender has an eye at either end to allow horizontal or vertical attachment to the boat.

Fitted with valves for easy inflation and deflation, all Anchor Marine standard fenders have hard thimble eyes to reinforce rope securing points.

Price: £7.95 – £49.95

best-boat-fenders-anchor-transom-corner-fender

Anchor Marine transom fender

Our second featured product from Anchor Marine are these transom fenders, which have been designed to give protection to any boat with a vulnerable transom or bathing platform. And if you’d rather not fit them to your boat, they can just as easily be mounted to the exposed corners of a marina berth or finger pontoon instead.

Supplied with two mounting strips and offered in four colours – white, royal blue, black and navy – these fenders measure 13 x 10 x 10 cm and weigh in at just under a kilogramme. Built to the same high standards as all other Anchor Marine products, these transom fenders could well pay for themselves in single bump!

Price: £27.99

Flat/cushion fenders

The obvious advantage of flat or cushion fenders is that they will not puncture or deflate, meaning 24/7 protection is provided regardless of whether the owner is on hand to keep a watch on them.

Our pick here is Force 4 Chandlery ‘s own-brand flat/cushion fender. Available in two sizes – 41 x 21 x 5 cm and 55 x 29 x 7 cm – these blue and white semi-rigid fenders are manufactured from tough PU closed-cell foam which will not absorb water.

Being flat, they are also easy to stow and, as Force 4 helpfully points out, double up as cockpit cushions or kneeling pads when not in use protecting the boat.

best-boat-fenders-talamex-bow

Talamex bow fender

Talamex Marine Products is the house brand of the Yachting Division of Netherlands-based distributor, Lankhorst Taselaar/Hohorst. As such, a wide range of quality marine equipment and fittings are marketed under the Talamex name, including the bow fender we have selected here.

The attraction of this three-eye horseshoe-shaped unit is that it is billed as a one-size product and thus should be suitable for a variety of boats and hull types. Anyone who has ever bashed their bow into a pontoon will certainly appreciate the benefits a bow fender can offer!

Boat Fenders and Boat Bumpers

Boat fenders, which are also known as boat bumpers, are designed to protect your vessel from damage that could be caused when docked or moored. Bumping against your dock or mooring will likely cause unsightly scrapes to the side of your boat. Hulls can also receive damage serious enough to scuttle your boat while it is docked. Avoid expensive damage and as well as the potential loss of your craft with quality boat bumpers from Wholesale Marine.

We stock an expansive selection of boat fenders, boat bumpers, and their accessories to protect your boat from hard knocks. Our selection includes cylindrical fenders , round fenders , specialty fenders , PWC fenders , and pontoon fenders . Whether you have a bass boat or cruiser, it’s important to choose the right fender style and size to ensure your vessel is well-protected.

Choosing the Right Boat Fenders/Boat Bumpers

Traditional inflatable boat fenders such as Taylor Made’s Super Gard Fender are a very popular option among boaters. These durable fenders are available in multiple colors and sizes, making them suitable for most crafts. Flat and contour fenders from Hull Hugr are a great option for bass boats and runabouts. Unlike traditional boat fenders, they provide more protection for gunwales. Additionally, these fenders can be installed as a dock bumper. If you need a specialized fender, such as the Taylor Made Bass Boat Fender or Taylor Made Pontoon Boat Fender , we have you covered. These unique fenders offer protection to areas where traditional boat fenders won’t work.

For new and veteran boaters alike, we offer an extensive selection of fender accessories including fender line, fender covers, fender locks, and more. Monday through Friday, our customer service team is available to assist with finding products, placing orders, and more. If you need assistance in selecting the right boat bumpers or any other marine products, give us a call at 1-877-388-2628. Don’t forget to ask about our Captain’s Club Rewards Program to start earning points towards future purchases.

You can never be too well protected, but it’s easy to be under protected and end up with damage that could have been prevented with fenders of a sufficient size and strength.

The price of proper fendering is a very small percentage of the price of a yacht, and the one time they protect your boat from damage will pay for the cost of fenders many times over.

Yachtfend offer 5 years warranty program; the best in the industry! Warranty cover from manufacturer’s defects. Other failure on products not caused by manufacturer warrenty are not covered.

Yachtfend do not cover freight or other charges caused by defect.

See our warrenty scheme for further detail information. Yachtfend will always best possible try to help solve any problems.

Fibreglass Boarding Steps - March 2024

Waiheke Marina at Kennedy Point Completed - November 2023

Waiheke Marina at Kennedy Point Completed - November 2023

It is with great pride that we announce a New Zealand first - the completion and opening of a new marina that is entirely fitted out with fenders - The Waiheke Marina based at Kennedy Point.  Work began back in July 2022, when we were chosen to be the sole fender provider for the marina. This involved working with the marina to develop a fender fit for purpose for the marina and working with them to determine the initial fender layout. Once we had made all the fenders, we were out to Waiheke one day a week to install the fenders. As well as fenders, we also supplied spliced dock lines for each berth.

But the work continues, as we have now designed a deep transom fender, perfect for those with transoms lower than the wooden whaler in the marina.  We have also designed and made a pole fender for the purpose of protecting vessels from oysters, rather than for traditional fendering purposes. The next stage of this project for us is working with berth holders to customise their berths so that everything is specific and customised to the boat in each berth.

When should you put fenders on your boat?

Fenders, also known as bumpers, are used to protect a boat’s hull from damage caused by contact with other boats, docks, or other structures. They are typically made of durable materials such as rubber or foam and are attached to the sides of a boat. Fenders should be used whenever there is a risk of the boat coming into contact with another object that could cause damage. Here are some situations where it is advisable to put fenders on your boat: Docking: When docking your boat, especially in crowded marinas or in rough weather conditions, it is essential to use fenders. They provide a cushion between your boat and the dock, preventing scratches, dents, or more serious damage. Mooring: If you plan to moor your boat alongside other vessels, fenders should be used to protect your boat from rubbing against neighboring boats. This is particularly important if there is wave action or tidal movement that could cause the boats to shift. Locks and bridges: When passing through locks or under low bridges, there is a risk of the boat’s hull contacting the walls or structure. Fenders can help absorb the impact and prevent damage. Rafting up: When tying up your boat alongside another boat, such as during an event or when staying overnight in a group, fenders are necessary to prevent damage from contact between the boats. Rough conditions: If you anticipate rough water conditions, strong currents, or turbulent weather, it is a good idea to put extra fenders on your boat. These conditions can increase the chances of accidental collisions, and having additional fenders can provide added protection. Remember that the specific fender placement and the number of fenders needed will depend on the size and shape of your boat, as well as the conditions you anticipate. It’s generally recommended to have fenders covering the potential contact points on both sides of your boat, ensuring all vulnerable areas are protected.

How to tie boat fenders?

Tying boat fenders securely is essential to ensure they stay in place and provide effective protection for your boat. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to tie boat fenders: Determine the attachment points: Look for strong points on your boat’s railing, cleats, or other secure fixtures where you can attach the fenders. These attachment points should be sturdy and capable of withstanding the pressure and movement of the fenders. Prepare the fender lines: Fender lines are typically made of nylon or polypropylene and are used to secure the fenders. Cut the fender lines to the desired length, ensuring they are long enough to reach the attachment points comfortably. Attach the fender to the line: Pass one end of the fender line through the hole or loop at the top of the fender. Then, double the line back over itself, creating a loop or a bight. Form a slipknot: Take the loose end of the line and pass it through the loop or bight you created in the previous step. Pull the loose end to tighten the knot securely around the fender. This slipknot allows you to easily adjust the fender’s height along the line. Attach the fender to the boat: Pass the loose end of the fender line through the attachment point on your boat (cleat, railing, etc.). Then, pass the line through the loop or bight formed by the slipknot. Pull the line tight to secure the fender in place. Adjust the fender position: Slide the slipknot up or down the fender line to adjust the height of the fender according to the boat’s position and the desired level of protection. Ensure the fender is positioned to protect the vulnerable areas of your boat, such as the hull or sides. Repeat for additional fenders: Repeat the process for each fender you want to secure to your boat. The number of fenders required will depend on the size of your boat and the level of protection needed. Test the fenders: Once all the fenders are tied in place, give them a firm tug to ensure they are securely attached. Adjust the positioning if necessary. It’s a good practice to periodically check the fenders and lines for any signs of wear or damage and make adjustments as needed. Properly securing your boat fenders will help protect your boat and ensure a safe and enjoyable boating experience.

How to clean boat fenders?

Boat fenders can accumulate dirt, grime, and salt deposits over time, so it’s important to clean them regularly to maintain their effectiveness and appearance. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to clean boat fenders: Gather the necessary supplies: You will need a bucket, mild soap or boat cleaner, a soft brush or sponge, water, and a hose. Prepare a cleaning solution: Fill the bucket with water and add a small amount of mild soap or boat cleaner. Follow the instructions on the cleaner product for the appropriate dilution ratio. Remove the fenders from the boat: Depending on the type of fenders and their attachment method, you may need to remove them from the boat for easier cleaning. If they are permanently attached, try to clean them in place without causing excessive strain on the attachment points. Rinse the fenders: Use a hose to rinse off any loose dirt or debris from the fenders. This will help pre-soak and loosen stubborn stains. Scrub the fenders: Dip the soft brush or sponge into the cleaning solution and gently scrub the fenders, working in a circular motion. Pay attention to any particularly dirty or stained areas. Avoid using abrasive brushes or harsh cleaners, as they can damage the fenders’ surface. Focus on problem areas: For tough stains or grime, you can apply the cleaning solution directly to the affected area and let it sit for a few minutes to help break down the dirt. Then, scrub the area again until the stain is removed. Rinse thoroughly: Once you have scrubbed the fenders, thoroughly rinse them with clean water to remove any soap residue. Make sure to rinse both the inside and outside of the fenders to ensure they are completely clean. Dry the fenders: After rinsing, allow the fenders to air dry completely before reinstalling them on the boat. You can place them in a well-ventilated area or under the sun to expedite the drying process. Reinstall the fenders: Once the fenders are completely dry, reattach them to your boat using the appropriate method or hardware. Regular maintenance: To keep your boat fenders in good condition, it’s a good idea to clean them regularly, especially after boating in salt

How to Choose the Best Boat Fender Type, Number, Location and More

How to Choose the Best Boat Fender Type, Number, Location and More

This article focuses on boat fenders, also known as boat bumpers. We'll cover everything you need to know about boat fenders and maybe even some things you don't!

Video: Boat Fender / Bumper Essentials

The video below will hit on all the crucial points we'll make in this article, so if you prefer a video format, go on and hit play! For more in-depth information, read on.

Boat fenders are essential equipment for any boat to protect the hull from contact with docks, pilings and other boats. Boats are expensive but fenders are not; always have the appropriate amount, type and size of fenders or bumpers onboard, and use them properly. It’s better to have too many than too few!

It is important to be prepared for all sorts of mooring conditions, from more extreme examples such as docking in hurricane force winds to the more typical conditions your boat will be in every day.

How to choose boat fenders

There are a variety of fender types to suit different situations. Generally speaking, sausage or cylindrical double-eye fenders are better for shorter, lighter vessels while center hole, round, and hybrid cylindrical-round fenders are best for larger, heavier vessels. There are also specialty fenders, such as transom fenders, for specific mooring arrangements.

Cylindrical double eye fenders are typically hung vertically, but may be hung horizontally with two fender lines. Center hole fenders are typically hung horizontally, but may be hung vertically, with one fender line running through the middle and figure eight knots at each end. Hang fenders vertically when mooring against docks or other flat structures; hang fenders horizontally to fend against protruding structures such as pilings and prevent roll-off.

There are plenty of specialty fenders suited for limited usage. If you have a low freeboard, there are fenders developed to protect the gunwales and rub rails of your boat. Fender cushions are particularly useful for protection against pilings. Transom fenders are designed for the swim platform of your boat or the stern of a sailboat. Many specialty fenders will add protection to your boat for relatively few dollars, and this amounts to cheap insurance compared to costly repair bills.

Fender Type

There are a number of popular fender manufactures on the market:

Norestar Boat Fenders

Norestar  makes rugged double-eye and HTM (hole-through-the-middle) ribbed fenders. They can be purchased as singles or in packs of two or four with or without lines for a discount. They have also expanded into other styles such as Flat EVA, Contour, Wheel, and Dock Fenders and fender accessories. Norestar's aim is best value per dollar spent so that you get the best possible quality fender for the lowest price.

Supafend Boat Fenders

Supafend makes "one-piece" rotationally molded fenders with non-marking and UV stabilized Marine Grade PVC. They have consistent wall thickness and heavy-duty rope eyelet ends. The fenders are tested before they leave the factory, ensuring maximum fendering durability and reliability. Supafend marine products have been installed extensively on boats under harsh New Zealand weather conditions and have excelled. They have cylindrical double-eye fenders for boats 20' to 55'.

Polyform Boat Fenders

Polyform makes fenders with several configurations that include twin eyes, center hole or round design. They have compact fenders designed for trailered boats. Their HTM-series is their "hole-through-the-middle line" and is designed for a wide variety of applications for boats from 20 to 50 feet long. They also have round buoys and mooring balls.

Taylor Made Boat Fenders

This company has both round cylindrical and oval cylindrical fenders. They produce fenders for a 10 foot dinghy or a 50 foot cruiser. They also manufacture a variety of specialty fenders that include low-board fenders, as well as a mermaid-shaped fender in your choice of pink or white.

Megafend Yacht Fenders

Megafend provides boaters with an easily inflatable vinyl fender that's perfect for boats with limited stowage space. They also have a solid core, hole-through-the-middle fender that is engineered for heavy marine use. All their fenders and buoys are available in many standard and custom sizes.

There are three primary considerations when choosing boat fenders:

  • Boat Weight
  • Boat Length
  • Mooring Conditions

Most sizing charts account for mainly item one above, but it is important to use common sense to address the other two. If your boat is particularly heavy for its size, or the conditions you moor in are or will be particularly harsh, use larger, heavier duty fenders than called for in sizing charts.

The general rule of thumb is that a cylindrical fender should have 1" of diameter (2" for round fenders) for every 4' to 5' of boat length. See the sizing chart below for more specific sizing and type guidelines.

Under 10' 3" -- Cylindrical Double-Eye, Hybrid
10'-15' 3" - 4" 9" Cylindrical Double-Eye, Hybrid
15'-20' 5" - 5.5" 12" Cylindrical Double-Eye, Center Hole, Hybrid
20'-25' 6" - 6.5" 15" Cylindrical Double-Eye, Center Hole, Hybrid, Round
25'-35' 8" - 8.5" 18" Cylindrical Double-Eye, Center Hole, Hybrid, Round
35'-50' 10.5" - 12" 21" Hybrid, Center Hole,  Round
50'-60' 12" 27" Hybrid, Center Hole,  Round
60'-72' 15" - 24" 27" Hybrid, Center Hole,  Round
72’ + 24” - 32” 34”

Number and placement

Fenders won’t do their job if they’re not deployed properly. Attention should be given to the number and position of fenders on your boat.

fenders hanging off boat

There is a rule of thumb for fender number: use one fender per 10’ of waterline, with a minimum of three fenders.   So a 20' boat would need 3 fenders and a 40' would need 4. At least one fender must be placed at maximum beam, with others distributed fore and aft. When rafting, more fenders are a good idea, three at maximum beam and two – round fenders are best – set fore and aft. Again, more fenders are better than fewer, so I’d advise against meeting only minimum requirements.

To position fenders correctly, hang them so that the bottoms of the fenders just skim the water’s surface, and then raise them an inch or two. This prevents the dock from pushing the fender up and out of position while limiting marine growth on the fender. Tie fenders to a solid anchor point, such as a station or a cleat instead of lifelines, which are not made to handle the stress. Also tie fenders as low as possible on the boat. This limits swing arc, ensuring that the fender will better maintain its intended position.

Cleaning, Stowage and Accessories

Clean fenders with soap and water. Do not use harsh cleaning agents such as acetone or related products as they will damage your fenders. Better yet, don’t let your fenders get dirty in the first place; washable fender covers are available to keep your fenders clean and protected from the elements.

folding fender rack

If you follow the advice here and carry extra fenders, you’ll need a place to stow them. You can simply stow the fenders in a storage locker or under a seat. However, this can make access to the fenders inconvenient. Fender racks are great for this as they keep fenders both accessible and out of the way.

Fender racks generally come in two types: folding racks and permanent racks. Folding racks, such as the   Norestar Folding Fender Racks   fold down when the fenders are removed, freeing up deck space.

Non-Folding racks like the Taylor Made Racks do not fold down which means they take up deck space regardless of whether the fenders are deployed or not and they are generally more expensive. However, they're more sturdy than non-folding racks.

Accessories

There are a number of accessories available to make working with your fenders more convenient. A few very useful ones are   fender hand pumps (alternately, most sports ball pumps work) to quickly and easily add air to a fender whenever required, fender height adjusters, to adjust fender height instantly without having to tie knots, and of course fender lines, to keep your fenders properly secured. These products are definitely worth a look.

Final Words

Protect your investment! You’ll be far better off spending a relatively small amount on a good set of fenders than spending a very large amount on boat repair.

  • Be sure to get the appropriate sized fenders for your boat and don’t forget to buy some extras
  • Get a variety of fender types to prepare for the different mooring situations you’ll encounter
  • Have a stowage strategy that allows for easy accessibly, yet keeps fenders from getting underfoot
  • Keep your fenders clean; they’ll look better and last longer
  • Check out accessories such as hand pumps and fender height adjusters to make your boating life that much easier

Happy Boating!

How to choose the right type of boat fender.

types of boat fenders

Boat fenders are undoubtedly a cost-effective way to enhance your boat’s safety and longevity. They also protect your dock from damage.

But when it comes time to purchase fenders, you’ll notice there’s a lot of options to choose from. How do you know which boat fenders will suit your needs?

As the premiere provider for all marina and dock equipment and accessories at Haven Dock & Marine, we’ve put a guide together for boat owners to understand the different types of boat fenders and how to choose the right ones for your boat. Read on to leverage our expertise!

How Boat Fenders Work

Boat fenders, also known as bumpers or dock fenders, absorb the shock of water vessels bumping into each other or the dock. They act as a barrier between boats, docks, and other boats to minimize damage.

Boat Fender Types

Haven Dock & Marine offers a complete family of top-of-the-line boat and dock fender products and accessories .

We are proud to be the sole manufacturer and distributor of FEND-ALL dock fenders , the premier dock and boat fenders on the market. They’re the only continuously supported, double-wall fenders available with an “internal high-energy absorption web” for the highest performance in the harshest climates and a life expectancy of 10+ years.

Check out a few marine fender products:

  • FEND-ALL FA 250—Medium Duty Dock Fender: This is a medium-duty dock fender intended for boats from 25′-50′. It can be mounted directly on a piling or on any flat surface.
  • FEND-ALL Heavy Duty Corner Fender : A versatile product to fit your needs. Available in black, and lengths include 2', 4', 6', and 8'. The 90-degree corner fender can be mounted horizontally or vertically and is designed to offer protection from concrete corners. Also available in light duty, medium duty, and extra heavy duty.
  • FEND-ALL FA 201—Floating Dock Fender: This fender is intended for use on floating docks. It has larger dimensions, greater wall thickness, and an internal high-energy absorption web to manage vessels much larger than the typical floating dock fender available on the market today.
  • FEND-ALL FA 400 Pile Mount: This mount provides maximum protection in narrow slips without the need for special fasteners and is mounted directly on pilings. It stands up to the sun, salt water, and everything else that the elements can throw at it, providing years of protection from damage.
  • FEND-ALL Unmounted: These fenders are available mounted on recycled plastic lumber for easy installation on a round piling or a larger flat surface. They are also available unmounted for installation on an existing square post or on your pressure-treated lumber for freshwater applications. These fenders are designed primarily for vertical mounting, although they can be installed horizontally to fit the needs of the buyer.
  • Molded Universal Dock Corner Bumpers: designed to mate with almost any dock bumper or dock bumper extension; made with rugged, marine-grade vinyl longevity against yellowing, even in harsh marine environments.

Choosing the Right Type of Boat Fenders

Choosing the best type of fender can be tricky because there are so many varieties of boat fenders.

If you’re looking for something in particular or unsure of what you need, don’t hesitate to give us a call at Haven Dock & Marine so we can make suggestions on the right fenders.

Here are a few tips to get you started!

Fender Size & Type

Fender size is essential, but the exact sizing depends on the type of fender you’re using and the size of your vessel.

For example, when using a cylindrical fender, the general rule is that the fender diameter should be an inch for every four to five feet of boat length. But for ball fenders, the ratio is two inches for every four to five feet of boat length.

The type of fender you should buy will depend on its use. More on that below.

Fender Material Options

A fender’s material affects its cost, performance, and longevity. Foam and rubber dock bumpers are convenient and lightweight; however, they are also easily damaged and deteriorate quickly. PVC vinyl, on the other hand, is affordable and durable.

Our FEND-ALL dock fenders lead the industry due to their unique double-wall design. They’re made from 100% certified prime virgin UV-stabilized flexible PVC to withstand demanding marine environments, combatting common marine hazards like gasoline, oil, and salt. With a life expectancy of 10 years, you won’t have to worry about replacing your fenders any time soon.

From our selection, you may choose from black or white fenders to perfectly complement your boat's gel coat for a seamless look.

Fender Quantity and Placement

The number of fenders your boat requires depends on its size. Large vessels, like pontoon boats and yachts, require more fenders than small fishing boats.

As a general rule of thumb, every boat needs a minimum of three fenders. Additionally, it’s best to hang your fenders so that there is one fender for every ten feet of waterline.

Secure fenders to a boat cleat or rail at the height that offers the most protection based on the dock’s height. Always account for water level changes to avoid placing the fenders incorrectly.

If the fenders are too high, the waves may push them out of position. Conversely, if they are too low, they may sit in the water and be susceptible to marine growth.

Your boat may require several different fenders to provide coverage in different situations.

For instance, pilings often roll or push bumpers out of place. Boats that dock next to pilings typically use a fender board that covers the distance between pilings.

Boats that tie up to floating docks usually place fenders just above the waterline to create a buffer zone between the boat and the dock. On the other hand, boats that moor together use fenders at the point of contact or where the beam is the widest.

Further, consider your boat’s size and use. You won't need industrial-sized fenders if you have a small fishing boat. Even speed boats and yachts don’t require the fenders that commercial vessels do.

In addition to boat fenders, you can purchase from Haven Dock & Marine’s full line of boat accessories . They include:

Mooring Clearance

Anchoring clearance, standing rigging clearance, running rigging clearance, deck hardware clearance, chandlery clearance, safety clearance, yacht and boat fenders.

Jimmy Green Marine stock an extensive range of yacht and boat fenders from Majoni, Polyform Norway and Plastimo.

Boat fenders offer essential protection for yachts or anything afloat, when they come in to contact with harbour walls, pontoons, pilings and other yachts.

Dock fenders, also known as bumpers, are permanently fitted to the pontoon or dock in areas of frequent use e.g. the pontoon in your allotted marina berth.

https://jimmygreen.com/img/cms/Mooring/Fenders/Plastimo dock fender in situ for bow defence.

Boat fenders are relatively inexpensive compared with gelcoat or even structural yacht repairs so it makes sense to have an adequate quantity of the correct size and configuration onboard.

Boat fenders come in several different shapes and a multitude of different sizes to safeguard the topsides, the bow or stem and the stern of any design of watercraft.

Calculate the optimum number of fenders according to their shape and size in preparation for your typical mooring conditions, whether in your home berth or visiting other ports or marinas. Then add some extra for use in severe conditions. Bear in mind that although more fenders are always going to be useful, they will all need to be stowed onboard securely.

Jimmy Green Marine offer two main types of boat fender which cover most mooring situations:

Cylindrical fenders with a rope eye at both ends can be hung vertically when mooring against predominantly flat harbour walls, docks and pontoons or horizontally against pilings and other awkward protrusions.

Cylindrical Fenders

Round or pear shaped fenders with one rope eye are very similar to mooring buoys and can be hung vertically for heavy load points and where extra diameter is required to allow for a yacht’s fore and aft curve. They are also usefully deployed to protect the stern platform when mooring stern to.

Other types include bow fenders

Plus through hole fenders, transom corner fenders, specialist flat narrow boat fenders and large inflatable fenders for larger yachts.

Take these factors into account when selecting the appropriate size for your fenders: Yacht Length Overall, Yacht Displacement (weight) and the anticipated mooring conditions

There is an old fashioned rule of thumb that will give you a starting point before making a final decision based on these three main factors.

Rule of Thumb 1 = 1 inch fender diameter or 2 inch round fender diameter for every 4 or 5 feet of yacht length overall.

The rule has been interpreted and converted approximately into modern metric equivalents in the table:

Boat Fender Selection Table
Yacht Length Overall under 5m 6m 8m 10m 12m 14m 16m 18m

Fender Frequency Guide

How to set up your fenders.

There is another old rule of thumb for judging how many boat fenders does a boat need – 1 fender per 10 feet of Low Waterline Length (LWL) with a minimum of 3 for boats of 20 feet or less. The rule has been developed into a modern metric measure equivalent.

Yacht LWL under 6m 6m-10m 10m-14m 14m-16m 16m-18m

Fenders need to be deployed in a proper fashion paying due care and attention to the spacing and height of the fenders and an assessment of how many of the total should be round rather than cylindrical fenders.

Deploy at least one fender amidships (maximum beam) with the remainder spaced appropriately fore and aft from the centre outward.

When mooring alongside another yacht (rafting up) an extra fender or two amidships will be required for adequate protection. An extra round fender deployed fore and aft will help to take up the increased gap between the topsides.

Hang fenders so that they are always just clear of the water or higher where required because of the pontoon height. Secure the fender lanyards to strong, deck level anchorage points. Avoid using lifelines or guard wires if possible because they are not designed to withstand the potential stresses and strains. A lower attachment point maintains the fender in position better by lessening the arc or swing.

Cleaning Fenders

Keep your fenders clean and free from harmful grit by washing with soap and water. Harsh cleaning agents are not advisable as they will harm the surface of the fender.

Fender covers are washable and help to keep your fenders clean and grit free as well as protecting them from the elements.

Use them against pilings, piers or in raft ups, Often times a couple of standard fenders are not enough, especially in rolling or stormy conditions and they're nice to have around when others don't.  They're easy to inflate and easy to store.

.  Their length offers more security and range compared to standard sized fenders that often get pushed out of position, and  there is less guessing on the best place to hang them against pilings and boats. Yet they store in a small fraction of their inflated size. Customers also use them permanently mounted in slips and they're great as replacements for difficult to use and store fender boards.
