Party boats are all the rage, with people constantly posting them on their social media, more and more people are looking to buy them. However, these luxurious boats are more pricey than the average person can typically afford. One company named DDD Manufaktúra, is aiming to make these kinds of opportunities and products more accessible to the average person, here’s how.

What is the Portless Catamaran?

The Portless Catamaran is an electric inflatable party boat that is powered by an electric outboard motor and lithium-battery pack. The unique watercraft inflates into a two-storied boat with enough room for 6-8 people. The e-catamaran is extremely easy to transport as it fits into the trunk of a car when completely empty. All packed up, it weighs around 256 pounds (120 kg).

The electric catamaran was designed to avoid busy marinas and boat landings, as well as cut expenses on gas. DDD Manufaktúra estimates the party boat’s electric charge range at about 16 nautical miles (30 km). However, a sunny day may make this range larger owing to the boat’s 200-W solar panel, which can keep the vessel moving for an entire day at about 4 knots (7 km/h).

Specific features of the Portless Catamaran

DDD Manufaktura’s Portless Catamaran is powered by a 1-kW Epropulsion Spirit 1.0 Plus motor. Being an inflatable watercraft, it’s not apt for long distance travels in harsh waters but better suited to hanging out in one place atop the water. The party boat has a display onboard, showing remaining battery power in order to ensure users don’t get stuck out on the water. Portless also offers the Catamaran Deluxe, which is 19.7 feet or 6 meters in length and weighs about 772 lb (350 kg). However, the standard model is definitely easier to handle and transport.

Design of the Portless Catamaran

The unique design of the Portless electric catamaran is quite plain but does have a somewhat futuristic charm. The Catamaran’s roof is made of a tougher material than typical fabric and is able to function as a second deck on the water vehicle. The e-catamaran offers 97 sq ft (9 sq m) of space on the main deck, and 32 sq ft (3 sq m) of upper deck space for sunbathing, observation and leaping into the water. The upper deck can hold up to 350 lb (160 kg) and is accessed via ladder-like steps built into the inner side wall.

Pricing and availability

The Portless Catamaran is available in two versions. In one version, the 4 basic elements of the structure (two sides, bottom, top) are assembled as a single-piece body during production, offering the easiest, quickest inflation.

In the other version, the 4 main parts of the body (two sides, bottom, top) are separate, and must be joined together with strong industrial zippers. The advantage of this design is that the individual parts can be easily moved. None of the elements weighs more than 66 lbs (30 kg), so it can be easily assembled by one person. It fits into a smaller space, making it much easier to transport, and only takes 5-10 minutes longer to set up than the single-piece body type.

Pricing starts at €11,920 (approx. US$12,672) for the single-piece Portless Catamaran and €12,620 (US$13,418) for the four-piece version. Those prices include an electric pump and swimming ladder. Buyers can upgrade with a few available options, such as a more powerful 3-kW e-drive and a steering wheel.

It also totally killed the grass underneath (not surprising). But I’d say we got our money’s worth. My boys loved it as did other boys that used it. For girls however, didn’t seem to enjoy it quite as much because their bathing suits don’t cover their whole legs and after a bit the friction would be uncomfortable. The jumper is big and nice. That said, I'm not sure how well the material will hold up overtime but so far it seems ok. The issue I have with the jump is the seams are just not sewn tight in some areas, on the slide you can feel air escaping, which doesn't appear to affect functionality but does not make me happy for a close too $500 dollar product. I may contact the company about this to see if it's within their standards. EDIT: So I've contacted the manufacture and they stated; "This is very normal. All Inflatables are designed to release air pressure through the seams and material. It is normal to feel or hear air escaping. Pin holes are a normal part of the manufacturing process, and are not cause for concern . If you like to send some pictures, we can take a look to make sure this is not a defective issue." Neighbors Program

For many summer events we have been renting similar products however we decide with all of the money we've spent we could have owned one. It was great fun for the kids and teens (4 -14). I was easy and quick to set up. However, taking it down was another story. We wanted to be sure it was clean and dry before deflating, which took time. Was unsure of an easy way to fold it to store and was unable to get it in to its storage bag. The next time we use it we'll try vacuuming the air out once deflating to see it that helps. Nevertheless, we plan to purchase an even larger one later.

We love this bounce house/water slide. It held up all summer without any punctures. The only thing I dislike about this is that when you run the sprinkler for the water slide, water gets on the inside of the inflatable and you literally have to unzip it and climb inside the bounce house (while the blower is on), climb through the chambers with towels, and wipe up all the standing water before you can roll it up. Otherwise you’ll have issues with mold and mildew. With me being slightly claustrophobic, it’s hard to be inside that tight space with the blowing being all loud.

Incredible! Was slightly skeptical but once it was blown up my toddler jumped right in it and even napped for 2 hours with no issue! The quality is so good, the size is perfect - it's the size of a crib with blow-up sides if that helps give you an idea of how big it is. Doesn't have a plastic smell which is nice since most air mattresses do!! I absolutely recommend this air mattress for anyone who is looking to take their little camping or anywhere. It packs down quite easily and is relatively small.

Portless Catamaran: Inflatable Party Boat Packs Down to Fit in Your Trunk

Party boats are a luxury many people can’t afford, especially if they have no place to store one — but one Hungarian company is looking to make the kinds of outings bragged about by rich TikTokkers a lot more accessible to the average person. Designed by DDD Manufaktura , the Portless Catamaran is a dual-deck electric boat that can hold as many as eight people. On top of that, it’s inflatable and packs down to an ultra-compact size when it’s time to take it back home.

Looking at the design, it’s clear from the outset that the Portless Catamaran isn’t going to win any awards for aesthetics or speed. Then again, that’s not really the point of this ultra-lightweight vessel. It’s a big step up from a simple raft, or even the kind of small, sub-$10K boat you might tow with a trailer. You could try to cram a lot of occupants on either of those, but it won’t be safe, and it definitely won’t be comfortable. The Portless Catamaran, on the other hand, has enough lounging surfaces to go around.

The inflatable catamaran comes in two sizes: a smaller standard version measuring 14.8 feet long that can support four to six people, and the larger Deluxe Catamaran that measures 19.7 feet long and is safe for up to eight occupants. Unlike the kind of folding fabric shade top seen on many pleasure crafts, this catamaran’s “roof” is strong enough to use as a second deck. The main deck of the standard size model measures 97 square feet, and the upper deck offers 32 square feet while holding up to 350 pounds. Ladder-like steps built into the side wall offer access from below.

The standard size Portless Catamaran starts out as a compact 265-pound package that fits in the trunk of a car. You’ll definitely need a few people to get it in and out, but what other kind of boat can be transported to the water in a Kia sedan? You’ll probably need a trailer to transport the larger version, since it weighs 772 pounds, but the Deluxe still breaks down into four pieces that zip together. The creators say you can get the standard size out of your vehicle, inflated, and launched in less than 10 minutes, while the deluxe takes about 20.

The vessel is made with the same type of materials and construction as inflatable paddle boards, equipped with a small 1-kilowatt Epropulsion Spirit 1.0 Plus electric outboard motor and lithium-polymer battery powered by a flexible solar panel . It’s not clear exactly how much of a range you’d get with those specs, but it’s probably safe to say you shouldn’t plan to cruise around for hours on end.

Okay, so the experience probably doesn’t come close to a day out on a billionaire’s superyacht , but the Portless Catamaran still looks extremely fun to use. The motor will definitely allow you to jet out to the open water to find a prime spot away from the crowds for swimming, diving, sunbathing, and whatever else you might get up to. With prices starting at $12,375 for the standard Portless Catamaran and $23,750 for the Deluxe, it’s reasonably affordable, too, and it could even work for people who don’t have a garage or driveway to store it.

Q. Why should I pick a Takacat over a conventional inflatable?

A. Most inflatables in the U.S. market are boring. They all look and perform the same. Instead of copying everyone else’s design, we decided to innovate. The Takacat catamaran hull design is fast, stable, safe, and comfortable. The fast draining removable Tube Transom® is simple and portable, which makes Takacat one of the most versatile inflatable boats in the market.

Q. Are Takacats easy to set up?

A. The Takacat line of boats are designed for quick and easy assembly . No need to mess around with heavy and complicated floorboard systems, our high pressure air deck floor fits perfectly in place while it inflates. Inflation with the supplied manual pump takes about 15 minutes, depending on the size of the boat and your urgency. Inflation with an electric pump takes about 8-10 minutes

Q: Are Takacats easy to deflate and pack away?

A. Our innovative, Tube Transom® enables the Takacat hulls to be rolled-up like a swiss cake roll which makes it easier to store & transport than traditional inflatable boats. The big advantage comes by way of weight savings which makes carrying the boat easier, but also makes the boat nimbler on the water and faster with smaller HP outboards.

Q. What is the best way to transport my Takacat?

A. The Takacat LX and Sport Series offer true portability. They can be fully deflated and will fit into most cars and SUVs. They can be transported either inflated or deflated on roof racks. They can be stored easily on boat decks because of their size and weight, they sit flat on deck without the need for a cradle. The LX and Sport models take up very little space when packed in their bags for storage. Takacat LX and Sport models offer an unparalleled experience from storage, transport to on the water, there is no better!

Q. What outboard should I buy for my Takacat?

A. Takacat boats utilize a catamaran hull design, this means that the boats have far less wetted surface and are much more efficient on the water than flat-bottom or V-hull boats. You can use less horsepower than other boats to achieve the same speeds.

Electric outboards are more efficient when used on a Takacat and are a great option.

The most common gas outboard is the 6hp. It is lightweight and portable which completes the package for the Takacat. The longer the boat you choose, the faster it will be and it will be able to plane with more weight. For example, a 420LX with a 6hp will plane with 440 lbs on board.

Q. Do I need to cup my propeller or buy an aftermarket cavitation plate?

A: We recommend cavitation plates for outboards greater than 6hp and less than 20 horsepower. Our dealers carry a wide variety of brands, we have tested and confirm the efficacy of the Permatrim and the Davis Dole-Fin.

We recommend having your propeller cupped if you experience any cavitation or ventilation. Cupping the prop will give the propeller more grip in the water and increase performance.

We recommend PowerTech stainless steel propellers for the best possible performance of your Takacat, although not necessary in most cases.

Q. How do I attach my Takacat to my davits?

A: You can use stainless shackles to attach to the lower transom bar through the holes in the top of the wheel brackets. The bow attachment point can be easily attached by running a lifting line around the floor (before inflation) but between the two under-floor D-rings.

Q. How to tow my Takacat?

A: We recommend towing your Takacat by making a 3 point bridle to the two bow safety line D-rings and the under-floor D-rings.

Q: Where are the Takacat boats designed and manufactured?

A: The Takacat LX, Sport and Explorer models are all designed by Greg Sowden in Aukland New Zealand. The boats are manufactured in Qindao, China by the same boatbuilder since 2007.

Q: Why would I want glued seams instead of welded?

A: Welded seams are great for RIBs as they are cheap and easy to do. They are also easy to replicate on repetitive seams. RIBs are also inflated about 90% of the time.

Takacat boats are typically folded and unfolded hundreds of times in their lifetime. Welded seams will become brittle and start to leak. Welded seams are also not 100% repairable, they can only be patched over.

Glued seams are more flexible over time and can have higher holding power in complex shapes. Our house blend glue is specifically engineered to maintain its flexibility over many years and after extend exposure to UV.

Q: Does the Takacat have any design or build certifications?

A: Yes, All Takacat model boats are CE tested and are CE marked to the latest CE standards 2013/53/EU.

All Takacat boats are also manufactured to International Standards ISO 4892-3:2006.

Q: How do I retube my Takacat?

A: Takacat LX, LX Hybrid and Sport models can be easily retubed by simply constructing your boat with a new set of tubes ordered from your local Takacat dealer!

Q: Should I buy a PVC or Hypalon Takacat?

A: The vast majority of Takacat boats are of the PVC variety. Because most Takacats live not-in-use lives in their bags, there is not real advantage of the Hypalon. 

Hypalon comes in handy when you will be in tropics levels of UV and in a year-round type of usage. We mean 100% in the water all the time. 

You can still circumvent the need for pricey Hypalon by electing to buy chaps. That will protect the boat skin from UV and even provide a bit more abrasion resistance.

Q: Can I buy an extended warranty?

A: Technical Specs (size, weight, carry capacity etc.), there are several differences between the Takacat models:

•  T340LX, T380LX, T420LX and 460LX models include a removable fin that attaches to the air deck floor. This allows the air deck floor to be used as an Inflatable Stand Up Paddleboard (ISUP) Note: this is for leisure and not a high performance paddleboard.
• T380LX, T420LX and 460LX models have two air chambers per tube. All other models have a single air chamber per tube.
• The tube diameter of the T420LX is 22”. All other models have 19” tube diameters.
• The T420LX does not come with oar locks and oars. We provide two paddles, which makes the larger boat easier to maneuver. Additionally, the oars are not in the way of the tubes providing more comfortable seating.

Q: My Takacat needs repairs or replacement parts, what do I do?

A: You should first reach out to your local dealer. Many of our Takacat dealers are also boat repair facilities and would be happy to repair your boat.

Q: Can I leave my Takacat inflated for long periods of time?

A: Yes you can! We would recommend equipping your Takacat with chaps for UV protection (and to keep the bird poop off) and you may also need to apply Inflatable Bottom Paint (yes, that is a real thing) to contend with any growth in your waters.

What is an Inflatable Catamaran?

With a design based on geometry, just like their traditional non-inflatable counterparts, inflatable catamarans offer stability and smooth sailing due to the wide beam and double- hulled tubes on either side.

This isn't your typical full-size dive/snorkel/sightseeing catamaran you've seen in the local marina. They range in size from eight to 15 or so feet and can be propelled by sails, an outboard engine or a pair of oars.

The unique thing about inflatable catamarans is that they, well, inflate, as well as deflate for storage in a car or on a bigger boat. This also makes it easier to carry to and from the water.  

Similar in design to a pontoon boat, inflatable catamarans have actually been called pontoon boats (though they're technically not), along with fishing boats or even inflatable kayak s (which they're really not either).

While they don't have cabins or storage in the tubes like full-size (non-inflatable) cats, they can accommodate anywhere from two to eight passengers depending on size.

Heat-Welded Seams:  Heat welding ensures a sturdy, durable and water-resistant seam that can stand up to saltwater, fresh water and high heat. The high heat factor comes into play if you store it for long periods of time (such as in a garage, shed or attic).

Marine Plywood Transom:  Marine plywood is designed especially for wet, humid and marine environments. It makes a strong material to hold a small outboard engine.

Glued Seams vs. Welded Seams

Hi, the wheels seem good, the quality is good, but you could have put ball bearings in there in some way that you can change at regular intervals. Now we have ice on the lake, we've had that for a while, so I haven't tried the wheels in real life if there is any such. After all, I had the honor of paying taxes that surely go towards improving the world, however you now look at what is better. Anyway, best regards.

The wheels are real easy to put down and retract. My only concern is the tyres on the wheels appear to be retreads.

We love the stability, strength, roominess and light weight of our new True Kit inflatable with 9.9HP LW Merc on the back. Seating, rings and accessories are very well placed and thought out. The landing craft style bow makes it even easier to hop on and off, particularly at the beach. Our dog River thinks it was designed just for her - a perfect place from which to keep watch whilst underway!

I haven't had the time to use the boat yet, but have assembled and inflated the boat. Compared to the Zodiac Granride MK3, it's a lot lighter, and the inflatable deck is much easier then the zodiacs hard deck to get in place. So just from looking at the TrueKit, i think the quality is up at the zodiac level, and looking forward to try out the boat in the water!

The Bimini top fits beautifully onto my Discovery 2.8. You can tell that a lot of thought went into its construction and design, as the ropes, cleats, and clips all fit exactly as they are supposed to and create an extremely sturdy top. I’m so glad that I ordered it—it will give me shade and protection on the hottest of days. I mount a solar panel to my 1103 Torqeedo motor and the bimini supports it with no problem. I’ve also tried it in ripping winds—this top holds up great. Highly recommend for an enhanced boating experience.

Veterans of top-secret WWII Ghost Army unit awarded Congressional Gold Medal

A secret American military unit known for its deception and trickery during World War II was awarded the highest honor, a Congressional Gold Medal, on Thursday in Washington, D.C.

The 23rd Headquarters Special Troops, also known as the "Ghost Army," used things like inflatable tanks, sound effects, costumes and acting to accomplish their missions in Europe.

“The actions of the Ghost Army helped change the course of the war for thousands of American and Allied troops and contributed to the liberation of a continent from a terrible evil,” Secretary of the Army Christine Wormuth said during the ceremony at the U.S. Capitol, the Associated Press reported .

Only seven members of the Ghost Army are still alive, the AP reported, and three attended the ceremony in Washington: 100-year-old Bernard Bluestein of Hoffman Estates, Illinois; 99-year-old John Christman of Leesburg, New Jersey; and 100-year-old Seymour Nussenbaum of Monroe Township, New Jersey.

What was the Ghost Army?

After the war, information on the Ghost Army was kept secret for more than 50 years until it was declassified in 1996.

The military unit consisted of around 1,000 men and 82 officers under Colonel Harry L. Reeder.

Despite their relatively small numbers, the Ghost Army was able to simulate around 30,000 men, or two divisions, by using radio, sonic and visual deception, according to the National World War II Museum .

What is the Congressional Gold Medal?

The Congressional Gold Medal is the oldest award and the highest civilian honor given in the U.S., along with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

It is awarded by Congress and is the "highest expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions by individuals, institutions or groups," according to the Congressional Medal of Honor Society's website.

Three U.S. veterans who served during World War II in a secret unit known as the Ghost Army that used inflated tanks and sound effects to fool their enemies were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal on Thursday, 80 years after they saw combat.

DALLAS (AP) — With inflatable tanks, radio trickery, costume uniforms and acting, the American military units that became known as the Ghost Army outwitted the enemy during World War II. Their mission was kept secret for decades, but on Thursday the group stepped out of the shadows as they were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal at a ceremony in Washington.

“The actions of the Ghost Army helped change the course of the war for thousands of American and Allied troops and contributed to the liberation of a continent from a terrible evil,” Secretary of the Army Christine Wormuth said during the ceremony at the U.S. Capitol.

She said that many of the techniques the Ghost Army pioneered are still used on the battlefield. “Even though technology has changed quite a bit since 1944, our modern techniques build on a lot of what the Ghost Army did and we are still learning from your legacy,” she said.

Three of the seven known surviving members attended the ceremony: Bernard Bluestein, 100, of Hoffman Estates, Illinois; John Christman, 99, of Leesburg, New Jersey; and Seymour Nussenbaum, 100, of Monroe Township, New Jersey.

Their work during the war “was like putting on a big production,” Nussenbaum said in an interview before the ceremony.

“We have had in some cases people impersonating generals, putting on a general’s uniform and walking around the streets,” he said.

Nussenbaum, who grew up in New York City, was studying art at the Pratt Institute before he joined the Army. Eventually, he joined a unit specializing in camouflage that was part of the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops.

“Our mission was to fool the enemy, to put on a big act,” said Nussenbaum, a painter who went on to a career in commercial art.

Sen. Edward Markey of Massachusetts said during the ceremony that the Ghost Army members were “creative, original thinkers, who used engineering, art, architecture and advertising to wage battle with the enemy.”

“Their weapons were unconventional but their patriotism was unquestionable,” he said.

House Speaker Mike Johnson said during the ceremony that it’s estimated that between 15,000 to 30,000 lives were saved because of the Ghost Army’s work.

The legislation to honor the military units with the Congressional Gold Medal — Congress’ highest honor — was signed into law by President Joe Biden in 2022. That came after almost a decade of work by family members of the soldiers and Rick Beyer, a filmmaker and author who has who helped bring their story to light after their mission was declassified in 1996. Beyer, president of the Ghost Army Legacy Project, produced and directed the 2013 documentary “The Ghost Army” and co-authored the 2015 book “The Ghost Army of World War II.”

“They put themselves in harm’s way wielding imagination, bravado and creativity in order that other soldiers might be able to fight and live,” Beyer told those gathered Thursday.

“This is a day that has been a long time coming but it has been well worth the wait,” Beyer said.

The Ghost Army included about 1,100 soldiers in the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops, which carried out about 20 battlefield deceptions in France, Luxembourg, Belgium and Germany, and around 200 soldiers in the 3133rd Signal Company Special, which carried out two deceptions in Italy.

One of the biggest missions, called Operation Viersen, came in March 1945 when the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops’ deception drew German units away from the point on the Rhine River where the 9th Army was actually crossing.

“They had hundreds of inflatables set up,” Beyer said in an interview before the ceremony. “They had their sound trucks operating for multiple nights. They had other units attached to them. They had set up multiple phony headquarters and staffed them with officers who were pretending to be colonels.”

“This was an all-hands-on-deck affair and it was completely successful,” Beyer said. “It fooled the Germans. They moved their troops to the river opposite where the deception was.”

In September 1944, the Ghost Army helped fill a gap in Gen. George Patton’s line during an attack on the Germans in the French city of Metz.

“They end up holding this part of the line for eight days, which is really long in terms of doing a deception, trying to keep up appearances,” Beyer said.

Kim Seale of Dallas said that his father’s work in the Ghost Army came as a surprise to him. Only about six months after his father’s death at the age of 84 in 2001, he was told of the connection by a past member of the Ghost Army who was putting together a reunion.

“I said, ‘What do you mean, Ghost Army?’” Seale said.

“My Dad never talked about it,” Seale said. “He kept the oath.”

He said his father, Oscar Seale, who was a captain, had told him that at one point during the war that he had transitioned from a tank division to a position as a courier. Seale said he now thinks that’s when his father joined the Ghost Army.

“It’s been a 20-plus year journey of learning about the Ghost Army, learning about what my Dad did, learning about what the men did and just being amazed at that story,” he said.
