This is a process of elimination which will deliver the most appropriate yacht for your holiday.

How do I ensure the most suitable final selection? 

It is crucial that we, at Goolets, gain a thorough understanding of your preferences and expectations from the beginning, so that we can undertake a comprehensive, tailored search. Please consider the following:

• Do you prefer modern or classic yachts? 
• Do you prioritize size of the yacht or the age of the yacht? 
• What do you expect from your crew? Highly attentive at all times, or more in the background?
• Would you prefer a younger crew, full of energy and sociable; or less so?
• Do you need a faster yacht to explore more places and cover more ground, or is this not so important?
• Do you prefer larger cabins and a spacious salon/living area, or you are more of an outdoor person?
• Do you prefer a more luxurious yacht, or to allocate more of your budget to food/beverages and activities (water sports/land excursions/tours/bike rental, etc)?

Once we have noted your preferences, we will compile a shortlist of possibilities comprising 5 to 10 yachts of varying specifications (size, interior style, type of crew, etc); following which, we will narrow this down to 2 or 3 options, all of which would make excellent choices. 

This process can be repeated with multiple permutations in order to arrive at the most suitable selection.

This process - refined over the past 15 years - delivers successful charters and satisfied customers.

What is the cost of a yacht charter? 

We specialize in crewed vessels, where prices can range anywhere from € 5,000 per week up to more than € 1 million per week. Most of our charters fall into three price levels: 

• From € 10,000 to € 30,000 per week
: This price range has the largest variety of yachts, and includes smaller vessels - motor and sail, gulets, classic yachts, and catamarans.  When booking, it is important to ensure proper maintenance inspections have been carried out, and the crews are professionally trained, speak fluent English, and can provide excellent service.  Around 30% of our customers book vessels in this range. 
• From € 30,000 to € 100,000 per week:
 This price level is becoming more popular every season. It includes a wide range of yachts, traditional and modern. These are high specification vessels offering every imaginable comfort. Around 50% of our clients book yachts in this price range. 
• From € 100,000 per week
: This price level includes ultra-luxury vessels such as megayachts. These are the most highly sought-after charter yachts in the world, with a wide range of high-end water “toys” onboard - including jet skis, a heli-pad, and even a submarine. These charters are very bespoke and every detail is managed to cater for exacting requirements.  A small percentage of our clients book these superyachts. 

Is the cost of a personal charter manager included?

Yes, Goolets’ services are included in the base charter rate. 

Booking your holiday with us includes:

• A dedicated, personal yacht expert : one of our team will be assigned to you and will oversee every detail of your charter. 
• A personal concierge /customer support person : when you book a yacht with us, you will also be assigned a destination expert who can advise on routes, activities, and local cuisine.  She/he will help design your charter to your specifications to maximise your cruise.
• A destination manager : a person from within our team responsible for the time you spend ashore at each local destination / stop-off, ensuring a seamless and positive experience. 
• All these costs are incorporated into the base charter fee.  

How do you help me plan the itinerary?

For each destination, we provide all the most popular itineraries / routes that are being followed.

First step is to go through the itinerary and determine your starting point. This usually covers check-in and check-out locations, and some of the highlights (islands, towns, nature parks, bays, locations), that you would prefer to visit.

Second, the tailor-made route is refined to maximise each port of call. You can elect to stay longer in some places and omit others.

Third, we customize your itinerary according to your group structure and preferences. If you have small children or teenagers, or if you are an active group of older people travelling without children, or if you are in your 30s travelling with friends who like to party, you can all follow the same route. You can all arrive at the same island, for example, yet experience it in a completely different way:

• Families with young children: we will find the best and safest sandy beaches where you can swim and relax 
• Teenagers might enjoy activities such as water sports
• Older groups may with to visit historic places, enjoy a leisurely lunch at a local restaurant, or visit a wine cellar
• Those who like to party might wish to sleep during the day and stay up til the wee hours.

How do you help me plan the activities for the route/itinerary I select? 

When we have the basis for the itinerary and your group structure (age, wishes, expectations) we construct your wishlist and discuss it with the Captain. 

We have successfully organised thousands of charter cruises for every conceivable group size so we have a thorough understanding of what is required to make your trip a success.

What Is The Reservation Process?

Your first point of contact at Goolets will be with a Concierge Assistant /Yacht Planner. This involves a full review and confirmation of all of your wishes. This information is collated, then we confirm availability with the yacht owner. We then prepare the necessary paperwork including the charter contract which is signed three-ways - by you (the charterer), by us (the broker), and by the yacht owner. Upon payment of a 50% deposit, the yacht booking is secured.  

Your wishlist is compiled and the planning for your trip commences - usually one or two months prior to departure. You will be sent a questionnaire where you will confirm the passenger names, your menu preferences, any food allergies, whether you need airport transfers booked, and so on. We communicate with the yacht’s crew and create a day by day itinerary.

Final payments are made 4 weeks prior to departure, and all relevant travel documents and destination advice are issued.  The crew is briefed on any last minute requests. 

At check-in state, our destination experts will arrange everything on the ground to ensure an easy embarkation.

We stay in contact throughout your holiday to ensure everything is going as planned.

A Guide to Gulet Sailing Holidays in Turkey

I am incredibly grateful for countless travel memories that I can look back on with fondness but one of my favourite is gulet cruising in Turkey. It was a four night, five-day sailing holiday along the Mediterranean coast from Fethiye to Olympus. Choosing to partly detox from an Internet addiction, and relax at the same time, the experience was ten times better than any spa retreat offers.

However, speaking to friends after the event, it seemed that the biggest misconception people have about gulet sailing holidays in Turkey, is that you’ll spend all day, every day on the boat being bored, but it is about much more than that. Firstly, if you are a novice to gulet cruising, it helps to understand the unique background, concept and what makes them different from others sailing vessels.

Of course, if you do not like fish or seafood, the cook will whip up many alternative dishes, but for fish lovers, part of the thrill is catching your dinner and BBQing it. From sea to plate within 20 minutes. You cannot get any fresher than that!

7: Snorkelling and diving

TURKEY GULET YACHT

A gulet is a classic wooden, motorized, and sailing boat that is perfect for long sea voyages and close-to-land cruises.

Traditional Turkish gulets are made-to-order boats that skilled artisans construct from wood. Because they provide a very comfortable cruising experience, gulets, often referred to as motor sailboats, are perfect for coastal excursions and lengthy sea cruises.

We are aware that the first gulet construction began in Turkey’s Bodrum region. However, production is also taking place in Bozburun, Marmaris, Fethiye, and Istanbul as a result of the expanding market and demand.

Types of Gulets

Gulet: The gulet is the most well-known traditional yacht design for Blue Cruise. The dining table and seating area are located at the back of the gulets.

There is typically a sofa and enough sun pillows out front for everyone. The entrance to the cabins is through this hall, which features a dining table according to the size of the gulet and an interior hall.

They typically use this space for the suite room, or what we would refer to as the “master cabin.” All other details are the same as for gulets, with the exception of this characteristic.

Tirhandil is the oldest local wooden boat type with a pointed stern and the best-suited wooden yacht for sailing. Today, the equipment has changed from sloop to lifeboat and from sail to sail; the majority of them are three-corner sails.

They do not construct them on particularly lengthy decks, often between 15 and 25 meters, like other kinds. The same standards apply to their cabins. If you like sailing, this is the best option.

Accommodation on Gulets

Traditional Turkish gulets have evolved in appearance over time. A modern gulet today resembles a high-end floating hotel and can be anywhere between 15 and 55 meters (50 and 180 feet) in length. Gulet length and passenger capacity are not inversely related.

A 20-meter gulet, for instance, might contain three guest cabins or six. The cabins must be smaller in order to accommodate additional cabins of the same size. But in general, taller gulets make up vessels with six or more multi-cabs.

Every cabin on gulets of different shapes and sizes was created with the needs of the passenger in mind, including a bed, wardrobe, separate shower, and toilet.

However, extra comfort amenities like sofa sets, dressers, work desks, and jacuzzis are also available, depending on the size of the rooms and the level of luxury of the boat. There are separate cabins for personnel in the guest cabins.

Turkish Airlines and Pegasus both fly domestically from Istanbul and several other Turkish destinations to these seaside ports. You can also reach these towns by bus or train, which you can read more about in my guide to using public transport in Turkey.

From the UK or other European destinations, in the summer months (April to October), many airlines fly to Fethiye or Antalya and you should be able to catch a good deal.

When is the best time to go sailing in Turkey

For prime weather conditions, the peak summer season from May to September is best. In these months, the crowds do swell but the weather is best and you can almost guarantee long, sunny, hoy days – perfect for sailing trips in Turkey!

How to choose a company for a Turkey sailing trip

It might seem a little overwhelming as so many companies offer gulet cruises in Turkey. For two day or longer trips, I would definitely recommend Alaturka Cruises . I found them online in advance of my visit. Not only did they have excellent reviews online, but their email support beforehand was brilliant. The price was great value and the dates worked perfectly for my two week Turkey itinerary .

The gulet boat that we sailed the Turquoise Coast on was really well-maintained and well-sized for the number of passengers on board. It was so hot during our sailing trip in late August that they recommended we slept out under the stars on deck. We slept on these comfy sun-loungers and it was amazing sleeping with a warm breeze. The crew with Alaturka were fantastic. They were really attentive and fun, but not overbearing at all. We had a crew of three Turkish guys who took such great care of us and gave us great tips and suggestions. I joined the gulet cruise as a solo female traveller and didn’t feel uncomfortable once.

The other passengers were from all over the world – including a family from Saudi Arabia, a couple from South Africa and the US, a few other Brits and Americans. Everyone got on so well and the atmosphere was brilliant. With Alaturka, you could also rent your own private gulet cruise boat or yacht with crew if you had your own big group.

What to pack for a sailing holiday

Depending on the company you go with, it’s unlikely you’d need to bring any bedding or towels. However, you will need lots of suntan lotion, swimwear and hats. The sun can be very strong and there may only be a certain amount of shade onboard. The gulet boats normally have quite a few inflatables and they’re nearly always full board.

Every sailing company will have its own policy for alcohol on board. Our gulet cruise with Alaturka offered a self-service bar with an honesty tab, therefore we didn’t need to bring our own alcohol on board.

I would recommend one or two evening outfits for the nights you dock in or near a port for the option to go out in the evening.

Where to stay before or after the sailing trip

The main sailing routes are Fethiye to Olympus, or the other way round.

Towns to visit along the Turquoise Coast, Turkey

Although it was the starting point to my gulet cruise in Turkey, Fethiye was possibly my least favourite town along the coastline. The town has experienced some mass overdevelopment in the past few decades and I imagine much of its charm has been lost.

I don’t know why, but before I arrived, it seemed to think Fethiye was going to be a quaint village so I was even more disappointed. That being said, it is the starting point for many sailing trips in Turkey so you don’t necessarily need to spend too long there. Its harbour is pretty beautiful but I didn’t particularly like the surrounding streets and restaurant areas.

Some of the key attractions in and around Fethiye include the ancient city of Kadyanda and the abandoned ancient Greek village of Kaya Köyü.

Butterfly Valley

The first stop for many boats departing from Fethiye is the famed Butterfly Valley. This beautiful secluded cove is only reached by boat.

Its important to know that this beach isn’t sand, but instead, lots of tiny sharp rocks – really painful.

The beach sits at the entrance to a vast canyon, where there is also a cool off-the-radar back-to-basics campsite and a low-key bar and restaurants offering a cool hippy chilled vibe.

It’s called Butterfly Valley as it’s home to a butterfly farm, were there’s a huge diverse range of butterflies. August (when I visited) was not the season to see the butterflies, but the ones I did see were very colourful.

Ölüdeniz is one of the most famous beaches in Europe. This stunning beach is regularly voted as one of the most beautiful, so I was really excited to dock here.

It really is a beautiful stretch, but as with many gorgeous beaches around the world, it certainly draws crowds and is pretty touristy.

One of the most popular activities to do in Ölüdeniz, and even in Turkey is paragliding. You can arrange this through your gulet cruise organisers, when you arrive in Ölüdeniz or in advance through GetYourguide. Book your paragliding jump here!

No matter which company you pick to go paragliding with, the experience is the same.

You depart from the centre of Ölüdeniz in a minibus with all of the paragliding kits and crew on board.

It’s one very long and perilous drive to the top of Babadag Mountain. I wondered a few times if the van was genuinely road-worthy enough, but we made it.

Ölüdeniz is one of the highest commercial locations in the world where you can paraglide. Together with the breathtaking views and consistently good weather, it is also one of the best places in the world to paraglide.

Once you reach the top, it takes no more than five minutes to jump into the gear and attach the parachute. You run down a short runway with your paragliding guide before, bam, you’re in the air.

We flew straight through the clouds, which was much like a warmer shower, before swerving sharply and emerging into the most spectacular view.

I was really impressed with my guide who I felt really wanted to make it an epic experience for me. He was very keen on making sure we tons of awesome photos and videos, and he really worked the ropes to create a stomach twisting experience. It was amazing!

Aside from paragliding, Ölüdeniz is also the starting point for the Lycian Trail, one of Turkey’s most iconic hiking routes.

In Ölüdeniz, there are also some great bars and cafes to enjoy some time in if you don’t feel like paragliding.

The beautiful harbour town of Kaş has a lot to offer and is a great town to visit along the Turquoise Coast. Its charming laneways are lined with interesting boutique stores, cute cafes, lively beach bars and metres of tumbling bougainvillea.

This area is also known for fantastic diving and many dive operators run trips straight from Kaş. Our boat trip with Alaturka permitted enough time to spend the afternoon diving, which was great.

We enjoyed fantastic cocktails at Mumi Cafe Beach. This beach bar had had an awesome atmosphere during the day, and I would highly recommend.

On the day we were in Kaş, it so happened to be Victory Day in Turkey. This meant that the evening was absolutely pumping. Hundreds of Turks had travelled from all over the country to revel in the town. It was an amazing experience as a tourist.

The next stop along the coast is Kekova, and the magnificent Sunken City here – a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Kekova is home to incredible underwater ruins that were submerged following an earthquake. This area was once a prominent town in the Byzantine and Lycian eras, but is now completely deserted, except for a handful of goats.

This is a no walk, no diving zone. But many boats do sail past each day slowly to take in the incredible site. You can see rooms, staircases and doorways above the sea level, as well as make out pathways and more rooms under the water level. Luckily the water is completely translucent, and is one of the most unusual sites I have ever seen.

Kaleköy and Simena Castle

Along the Turquoise Coast, this tiny, traditional village was one of my favourite spots. Visiting this tiny hillside hamlet was like a step back in time. The ancient Simena Castle is located at the top of the village and is well worth a visit. It takes around 10 minutes of hiking through the tiny village and up into the hill. At the top, you’ll find the old fortress, once a notable Lycian settlement. Here you will find an incredible panoramic vista over the Gokkaya bay. The heat can be particularly intense here and despite it being quite a short hike, we ran out of water.

The tiny laneways of the village are lined with local women (and children) selling their homemade souvenirs. They were not pushy at all and I bought several lovely bracelets here.

Lastly, the final spot along the Turquoise Coast to visit (or first if you’re doing this route in reverse) is the hippie town of Olympos.

An odd mix of travellers descend on this incredibly beautiful town, nestled in a canyon and surrounded by fragrant forest. It has a tucked away beach and an atmosphere that’s really quite unique. Visitors stay in ‘treehouses’, and the bars are leafy, basic and so, so chilled. If have the time, this is a great place to finish the trip and spend a few extra nights.

Picturesque coasts like those make it hard to leave the ship and explore. I could stare at that all day. But thankfully you pointed out numerous amazing things to do. I would thoroughly enjoy the paragliding. There is something about going through clouds that gives you an incredible feeling.

Those are some amazing towns – Kas specially. It reminds me of a smaller town in Nepal called Bandipur with its cobbled pathways and bougainvillea. The water here is terrific, I definitely think that it is the best way to explore this coastline. Glad you shared your views on the same.

Superb! Like: The support from Erkan was superb. Our trip was originally scheduled for 2020, but Erkan facilitated a roll over to 2021 and again to 2022 due to the Covid travel restrictions from South Africa. Erkan is fantastic as the go-between and nothing is ever too much trouble for him. The Love Boat was exactly as pictured and the staff were fantastic. We had one or two translation issues / misunderstandings, but they were very helpful, polite and friendly the entire time. The food was superb! The Captain was also very accommodating with the air-conditioning, leaving it on for us most of the time. Dislike: Having a couple of industrial size ice machines would be great and making sure that the drinks fridges are re-filled every morning, so that we do not have to do it ourselves. Ensuring that we had enough ice bought from land every day was also a pain - we did run out of ice on one occasion. 26.08.2022

Erkan is the most professional, accountable and dedicated person I have ever dealt with in the space of Marine business (I am a Yachtsman myself and own a sailing yacht). Absolute hoot of a holiday - loved the boat, the staff, and Turkey Like: The crew were ALL fantastic, Jana looked after our every need and both the captains were very capable and very willing to please. All the food was delicious. We even had midnight snacks provided on a couple of occasions! Loved the top deck cabins and the fact that the lower cabins are very spacious. Dislike: For a boat that sleeps 32 people, 14 sun loungers are no way near enough - even if we just had the mattress rather than the whole bed it would have been fine. Jana did go out and buy some thicker towels for us to lie on but it really needs sorting out properly with beds. One request was fresh bread every day and this did not happen, also it was noted that we had a vegetarian and one person that did not eat fish, shellfish and lamb, on the lunches/dinners that was served there was nothing else for the two people to eat apart from the vegetables and sides that accompanied our meal - it wasn't a huge problem but I would have expected a vegetarian meal for both to be served otherwise why fill in the preference forms? 08.09.2019

Gulet Cruise Turkey Reviews

I was fortunate enough to experience first hand the fantastic service i was provided, by Caglar and his team. Would highly recommend and look forward to meeting and using their service again in 2023.

It was a very nice 7 day experience. We had a lot of fun and we will definitely repeat it. Food, service were all great. While waiting for a classic fish bread and salad, we found rich tables with many kinds of appetizers and main courses. Many thanks to all of you.

All in all it was a perfect holiday. Our every request was met with a smiling face by the kind and helpful staff. The cleanliness of the boat was by far the best we’ve ever been to. We would like to thank both the boat personnel and you who contributed to the organization.

It contributes a lot to the team that plans our holiday and provides service day and night. Our boat is perfect and the abrasive in the pictures. I had a very enjoyable time with canoe, water ski, paddle board, jet ski. We’ve already made a reservation for next year.

We had a wonderful holiday from the beginning to the last day. Mehmet Kaptan and his team hosted us very well. We still remember your rich tables and delicious meals. On behalf of our entire group, thank you again for everything. Hope to see you soon.
