New 65-foot Elling E6: A Super-Safe, Long-Range Cruiser from the Netherlands

Elling Yachts in the Netherlands is introducing its 65-foot Elling E6, a solid, safe, long-range cruiser to North America at the Fort Lauderdale show, and comes with some fairly unique features, including its ability to right itself in a capsize and its second get-home engine in the event of a catastrophic failure to the main. Ellings are built by Neptune Marine, which has 40 years of experience, and are designed and engineered to be the safest cruisers in the world. With a range of 3,500 nm, the new E6 could cross the Atlantic, explore the fjords of Norway, or complete the Great Loop with only one refueling.

The E6 is powered by a single 900-hp Volvo D13 diesel, and tops out at 21 knots. It also has a spare 75-hp Volvo D2 with a shaft drive and folding prop; with this get-home engine, the boat goes 7 knots. The company uses Kevlar in the hull construction, and it conducts capsize tests to show the E6 can right itself in a 360-degree rollover. It is rated CE ocean Category A for offshore safety. Standard bow and stern thrusters make docking easy, even with just the single main engine.

The flagship of the Elling fleet, the new E6 has four cabins. The owner’s stateroom is aft for privacy, with a walkaround queen-sized bed, lots of storage space, an en suite head and shower, and a high-gloss cherry finish. A VIP stateroom with a queen bed is in the bow with a head, and a third cabin is opposite the lower galley; it has access to the salon and can be used as a separate stateroom or as an office. A crew cabin with a head and shower is aft, with an entrance from the transom. A garage there is large enough for a 12-foot Williams tender.

The pilothouse has two helm seats plus a double sofa so guests can keep the captain company underway. Visibility from the helm is excellent. A curved settee and a table facing a TV and two easy chairs are in the salon; it has large windows providing more visibility. A skylight opens at the touch of a button.

The E6 has a low profile and a low CG for stability underway. A low air draft makes it attractive for anyone cruising the ICW or the Great Loop, with lots of low bridges along the way.

One-of-a-kind, the Elling E6 forces us to re-examine what it is that we want from our boating

The Elling E6 is so different to any other boat you are likely to encounter that it’s difficult establishing an independent frame of reference to judge it by.

So as a starting point, let’s use one of Elling’s own edicts, “to make the safest boat in the world” – an audacious claim indeed. But then Elling is a pretty bold outfit.

Twin Volvo Penta D13 900hp engines provide the power

Although the Dutch company has not yet done so with this new flagship E6, under controlled conditions it did (spectacularly and successfully) purposely roll one of its smaller E4 models through 360 degrees, just to prove its self-righting claim.

Like the E4, the E6’s hull is constructed from Kevlar and Twaron, two high strength aramid fibres which in practical boating terms are nigh on indestructible.

Raised aft deck allows space for the aft master cabin

With its single engine and 5,000 litre fuel tanks, as long as you slow down to single figure speeds it’s capable of crossing the Atlantic without refuelling.

And yet its 900hp Volvo is also capable of pushing it at over 20 knots, giving it a cruising speed in the high teens – fast enough to ignore adverse tides and bad weather on shorter and less demanding coastal passages like, say, Dartmouth to Gibraltar. So far, so very very safe.

Of course, a jump in size from the E4’s 49ft to the E6’s 65ft is bound to provide a lot more space inside.

So in the case of the E6, the three cabins are all larger than the E4’s trio, and all en-suite too. The lower saloon is in the same place – located behind the forward VIP – but it’s also a lot roomier.

The real transformation though, and the main reason you would buy the E6 instead of the E4 – is the pilothouse. With safety in mind, Elling refused to sacrifice the generous sidedecks on its E4, so the pilothouse felt unavoidably cosy.

The wide side decks have been retained on the E6, but with 25% more beam and so much extra length to play with, the pilothouse feels as though as it has trebled in size. That’s partly down to exceptionally deep windows (double glazed, mind) that are unobstructed by exuberant stylists adornments.

Elling has also resisted the temptation to cram the space to capacity, instead preferring to leave plenty of free floor space to move around in. This light-filled space now provides a real alternative eating and drinking and socialising area to the lower saloon.

Don’t be fooled by the fact that the smaller E4 also has three cabins and a lower saloon – the pilothouse on the E6 is transformational.

The super-seaworthy Elling has no fly bridge – her sturdy wheelhouse has a comfortably elevated steering position which affords an excellent field of vision. You can lower the mast at the flick of a switch and pass bridges with a clearance of up to 3.45 meters, opening up the French canals and the inland waterways of the eastern US. Meanwhile, full double glazing, central heating and air conditioning will keep you comfortable everywhere between the tropics and the Arctic Circle. The New E6 and E6 Highline: 65 feet of luxury and adventure Neptune Marine Shipbuilding has released her latest model, the Elling E6 , in May 2016. This new venture is the crowning achievement of 17 years of research and development following the course set by the successful Elling E3 and E4 models.

The Elling E6 adds a new level of space and luxury to the high specifications already realized by this proven concept. The most remarkable new feature of the Elling E6 is the increase in overall length to 65 feet (19.80 metres) and a new elegant streamlined look.

A world-class bluewater traveller Another key quality of the Elling E6 is its CE category A certification, which means that it will be approved for ocean passages and become part of Elling’s trans-Atlantic range. The yacht also provides a degree of safety similar to a lifeboat – even being self-righting in the event of an emergency. The reinforced Aramid (Kevlar or Twaron) hull ensures the utmost in impact protection.

The Elling E6 has a fantastic thermal insulation and is standard equipped with double glazed windows with insulated window frames for use under extreme climate conditions. Other advantages include minimal maintenance costs, low fuel consumption at hull speed, and an auxiliary engine with a separate fuel tank, allowing the boat to reach safe haven in case of main engine failure. Furthermore the Elling E6 is equipped with an electro-hydraulic operated dinghy garage with enough space for a Williams 320 jet driven RIB.

The main engine on the Elling E6 is a Volvo Penta D13 six-cylinder 900 hp  diesel with a maximum speed of 21 knots. The auxiliary engine is a Volvo Penta D2 four-cylinder 75 hp (55 kW) diesel engine with a top speed of seven knots. The draught will be just 4′ 11″. The yacht will also be equipped with a keel-protected propeller. Great for use in shallow waters.

The large pilothouse has been designed to enhance the alfresco feel.  The additional 16 feet of length and 3 feet of extra beam,significantly boost the feeling of space.  Enhanced living area in the pilothouse easily accommodates up to eight people, Up to eight people can sit and relax in luxury with new comfortable seats. Separate from this area, the pilothouse has two helm seats and a pleasant sofa from where guests can keep the skipper company at the helm position. The interior features 6′ 4″ of headroom. As with the Elling E3 and E4 , the Elling E6 has a second, private seating area on the lower deck, to accommodate another group of up to eight people. Stabilizing The E6 includes the option for a Seakeeper 9 gyro stabilizing system. This achieves a roll reduction of at least 80%, including when the yacht is at anchor.
