The Very Best of Dutch Yacht Builders

OCEANCO YACHTS

Dutch yacht builders have crafted a reputation as being among the world’s very best, with an extraordinary density of high quality, high value shipyards operating out of the Netherlands.

Part of the reason for the dominance of Dutch yacht builders in the superyacht industry stems from Holland’s prestigious history of boat building, which stretches back centuries and was perfectly poised to make the shift to constructing luxury yachts during the 20th century. The word ‘yacht’ originally comes from the Dutch word ‘jacht’, meaning hunt.

Some of the towering names of the yachting world have emerged from Holland, with the great heritage yards Amels, Hakvoort, Royal Huisman, De Vries and Royal Van Lent more recently joined by other outstanding Dutch yacht builders such as Heesen, Vitters, and Oceanco.

Dutch shipyards are heralded not only for their world-class build quality, high tech yards, and innovation, but are also renowned for reliability in finishing projects on time and on budget. With Dutch shipyards producing many fully-custom ‘one-off’ yachts, many of the yachts launched from Holland’s shipyards are extremely iconic and often win international awards.

Dutch yacht builders have also capitalized on their individual reputations for quality construction by forming strong collaborations including Feadship and HISWA, which serve to market the best of Dutch yachting internationally, thereby growing the influence of the Dutch yacht builders.

Notable Dutch Yacht Builders

The Feadship fleet today is more than 450 strong, and includes some ground-breaking yachts including AQUARIUS and ECTASEA.

SICHTERMAN T38

Sichterman yachts.

Sichterman Yachts combines decades of family craftsmanship with smart design and super yacht technology. As a result, we are creating an innovative company which will shake up the yacht industry in its own unconventional way.

With a keen sense of style, design and customer satisfaction, we strive to create a unique aluminium fleet from 15M up to 26M which our clients will indefinitely fall in love with.

Sichterman Libertas 15M

PEOPLE, PASSION & PERFECTION

Sichterman is about a group of passionate people that found each other in a shared vision about yachting. Every component of the Sichterman team has its own expertise, whether it’s about designing, constructing or selling world class and innovative yachts.

We know that individually we can all go a long way, but as a team we can conquer the world.

The creation of excellence

Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder, but quality can be measured. The reason why we combined our vision with true Dutch craftsmanship and the passion of our amazing people. The only way to ensure every part, every element and every assembly meets our own impossible standards.

This results in aluminium yachts that are redefining the existing boundaries of yachting. Every so often, an innovative new company or product completely changes an entire branch. Sichterman wants to be that brand.

Nil vinclis dulcius illis

Our motto: ‘nothing is stronger than our mutual bond’. We found that, if you pursue a dream together, there’s no bridge too far to reach your goal. Our shared passion for Sichterman makes that, independently of what happens in the meantime, we will always continue our journey to change the world of yachting.

dutch yacht builders

The Sichterman legacy

Jan Albert Sichterman was a Dutch V.O.C. merchant from the 18th century. Sichterman had a lot of influence on the silk and textile trade between Bengal and the Netherlands. After his career in the East, he returned to his homeland as a very wealthy man.

Sichterman was known for being a collector of valuables and had a great eye for quality and details. Today, his legacy lives on in our brand, fleet and our vision to create a successful company.

Dutch Yacht Builders News – Most iconic yachts built

Dutch Domination: Dutch Yacht Builders Continue to Excel

Dutch yacht builders are a dominant force in the luxury yachting industry, with a large number of premier shipyards building spectacular custom and semi-custom superyachts in the Netherlands.

Dutch boat builders have consolidated a rich maritime tradition of boat-building, making a seamless transition from centuries of naval and commercial ship-building to constructing some of the finest luxury yachts on the planet for an elite clientele. Holland’s shipyards have become known for constructing high-tech, ultra-engineered superyachts, with a strong streak of innovation earning Dutch-built yachts a string of international superyacht awards.

Worth Avenue Yachts Dutch Yacht Builders

Working with some of the finest naval architects, interior designers and craftsmen on earth, Dutch yards have created a superb reputation for quality, as long-established shipyards such as Feadship, Hakvoort and Amels have been joined by the latest generation of cutting-edge yacht builders including Heesen and Oceanco.

In recent years, Dutch yacht builders have banded together to represent the country’s yacht-building experience at major international events such as the Monaco Yacht Show and FLIBS, where they have Dutch pavilions and launch their latest yachts and designs on their global debuts.

Below are some of the Dutch boat builders with a superb international reputation

Feadship is the partnership between two heritage Dutch shipyards, De Vries and Royal Van Lent, which have been building quality yachts since 1849. The Feadship superyacht fleet now numbers over 450, with a range of spectacular fully-custom yachts including the 50m M/Y BROADWATER for sale and the incredible 81m Mediterranean charter yacht, M/Y AIR.

Dutch Yacht Builders Feadship Motor Yacht Broadwater

Established in 1918, Amels is a powerhouse of Northern European yacht building, creating both custom and limited edition series superyachts, as well as an industry-leading range of DAMEN support yachts. Magnificent Amels yachts currently on the market include M/Y LA FAMILIA, a 55m black hulled superyacht with beach club and helipad, while charterers can enjoy the supremely popular 52m M/Y LADY NAG NAG .

Hakvoort is another richly pedigreed superyacht builder in Holland, with a history dating back to 1919. Constructing semi-custom and custom motor and sailing yachts, Hakvoort made its name in the superyacht world with iconic yachts such as the 50m M/Y Lady M II, which won awards upon launch and is available for charter in the Bahamas and Caribbean.

Heesen joined the Dutch yachting fraternity with a big splash in 1979, rapidly becoming known for its sleek and sporty custom-built superyachts. Gaining international acclaim for ground-breaking superyachts like M/Y GALACTICA STAR, Heesen yachts for sale include the magnificent 55m M/Y QUITE ESSENTIAL with pool and wellness spa, as well as the ultra-sophisticated 46m M/Y BOOKENDS.

Oceanco is a major force in the large yacht market, now building unique custom superyachts over 80m in length. The 75m M/Y WHEELS is a fantastic example of the Oceanco brand, with her seven decks of luxury living, including a split-level master suite with mezzanine and a cinema. Stunning Oceanco superyachts for charter include the gorgeous M/Y HELIOS, a 59m with an airy contemporary interior and glass-walled Jacuzzi.

Mulder is a family owned shipyard with roots stretching back to 1938, and builds exemplary custom and semi-custom motor yachts up to 45m in length. Yacht guests wishing to experience Mulder yachts can do no better than to charter M/Y SOLIS , a 34m two-decked superyacht with a light-filled modern interior and Jacuzzi.

Dutch Yacht Builders Mulder Motor Yacht Solis

Another standout Dutch yacht builder is Van der Valk , a high-quality shipyard in operation since 1967 and specialising in semi-custom explorer, expedition and flybridge yachts. Van der Valk yachts for sale include the new build Explorer37 Yacht , due for launch in 2019, and the 26m Raised Pilothouse yacht, launched in 2016.

These are just a select few of the premier Dutch yacht builders with vessels currently available for sale and charter. Dutch-built yachts are synonymous with quality, and it considered is a great privilege to own or charter these incredible vessels.

The latest new innovation to the S-design portfolio, Steeler Trawlers are setting new standards for adventurous yachtsmen looking for fun, speed and comfort.

The Steeler trawler experience

Trawlers have a magical effect, inspiring a sense of adventure among those who love to explore the waters. In the past, these trawlers were wooden boats sailed by men of steel who knew that reaching the best fishing grounds quickly was the key to success. But just as modern industrial trawlers have developed into a very different kind of vessel, so too have the versions made for more leisurely pursuits

These pleasure trawlers are still associated with fishing, adventure and a no-guts, no-glory mentality. However, while owners are among the most steadfast, dedicated and non-conformist of yachtsmen, most trawlers on offer these days are anything but fast and adventurous.

A fresh wind

All that’s about to change after a father-and-son team came to Steeler asking us to create a trawler yacht that we didn’t build at the time. We do now… And the results are impressive.

Superyacht quality

Apart from the demands related to cruising and fishing, this new 65-foot Trawler had to breathe premium Dutch quality and design. Examples include a bespoke interior, the ultimate gloss rate of the coating and an extreme level of detail in the technical installation. The result is a luxury trawler that also meets Steeler’s ambition to fuel and strengthen the reputation for excellence of Dutch yacht building.

Other key aspects of the new S-design Trawler line include:

  • Low centre of gravity translates into maximum stability
  • Absence of bow wake at all speeds results in minimum resistance
  • Higher speeds with up to 40% less fuel consumption
  • Minimum spray, dry cruising

Steel and aluminium

The first 65 S-design Trawler has a strong, light and low-maintenance aluminium construction. Steeler wouldn’t be Steeler if we didn’t now up the ante even further by catering for clients who would like to have a trawler in steel. The Long Range version of the Steeler Trawler will also have all the assets of an S-design hull and you can again make as many choices as you like for your interior and facilities. Let’s talk about your new trawler adventures…

It sure looks like Mark Zuckerberg is taking a brand new superyacht out to celebrate his 40th birthday

  • It seems as if Mark Zuckerberg will celebrate his 40th birthday on the  megayacht, Launchpad .
  • The yachting world has speculated for months that the Meta CEO is the owner of the vessel.
  • Now, both the boat and Zuckerberg's private jet have landed in Panama.

Insider Today

All signs point to Mark Zuckerberg celebrating his 40th birthday on what many speculate is his brand-new superyacht Launchpad .

The boating world has been buzzing about Launchpad — a 118-meter yacht built by the Dutch shipyard Feadship — for months, with rumors swirling that her owner is none other than the Meta CEO. But in the yachting world, where privacy is paramount , no party would confirm her owner.

"It is Feadship's standard policy to never divulge any information about our yachts with reference to ownership, costs, or delivery, etc," Feadship, the ship's builder, wrote to Business Insider in March. "Whether it is an 18-meter Feadship from the 1960s or a 118-meter Feadship from the 21st century, we do not share private information."

Related stories

Representatives for Zuckerberg did not respond to requests for comment from BI.

Now there's even more evidence: The megayacht arrived in Panama on Monday, making her way there from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where she's predominantly been moored since she made her maiden voyage across the Atlantic in March, according to public ship-tracking data. Wingman, the support superyacht that he is suspected to have purchased with Launchpad, made the journey with her.

Zuckerberg's plane also landed in Panama on Monday, per a private jet tracker, and if his Instagram is any indication, he was on board.

Putting two and two together — along with the many other clues linking Zuckerberg to the yacht — we can surmise that the Meta CEO is likely kicking off his new decade aboard his new toy.

Little is known about the luxury vessel, which was said to have been built for a sanctioned Russian businessman before it was handed over to the Dutch government, which served as a middleman for the purchase. Her final purchase price is unknown, but it's safe to say a yacht of that size from that shipyard would cost nine figures upfront and six figures a year to maintain.

The few photos of Launchpad available on the industry site SuperYacht Times show there appears to be a helipad and a swimming pool on her main deck.

A vessel of her size can typically sleep dozens of guests and crewmembers and likely has an expansive gym (where Zuckerberg could practice his jiu-jitsu), a spa, a movie room, and a garage to fit plenty of toys like his viral hydrofoil .

Zuckerberg's name was first connected to Launchpad in December when reports swirled that he visited Feadship's shipyard in the Netherlands. By March, yachting blogs like eSysman SuperYachts and Autoevolution suggested he officially snagged the boat at a $300 million price tag. Launchpad also bears the flag of the Marshall Islands, a US territory that is commonplace for American buyers to register their ships.

We will never know for sure whose name is on her title, so unless Zuckerberg confirms he's Launchpad's owner, we will have to wait for an invitation to Zuck's birthday party to confirm.

The 10 Best Explorer Yachts for High-Seas Adventures

A 350-foot gigayacht or 60-foot cruiser size isn't what defines an explorer yacht. the devil's in the details when it comes to authenticity., julia zaltzman, julia zaltzman's most recent stories.

Damen SeaXplorer Superyacht

Unlike fashion trends that seem to move as fast as a Redbull F1 car, the yachting industry takes its time adopting new ideas. There seems to be one exception. Explorer vessels, born out of the owners’ desires to go farther and stay longer, without sacrificing creature comforts, is developing with some urgency.

Several dozen builders and designers are now focusing on explorers, but they are also consulting with adventure travel firms that have a long history of using expedition yachts in remote parts of the globe. ICON Yachts, for example, collaborated with Cookson Adventures and the International Seakeepers Society on its Project Mission in both the overarching design and the details found across the yacht. Adventure outfitter EYOS employs its expertise routinely with Damen’s explorer vessels, most recently with the 190-foot Pink Shadow.   EYOS has a list of 50 features that separate authentic explorers from faux versions that might look the part but lack the necessary infrastructure and design elements.

Long-range cruising, system redundancy for autonomy at sea, and storage to carry specialist equipment like submersibles are some of the requirements that define expedition boats. There’s also deck configuration for the easy launch of tenders and toys, along with strong, ice-class hulls and climate-controlled areas comfort in extreme polar and tropic regions.

We culled through the latest fleet of explorers with multiple lengths and designs, selecting a single feature that we think makes it best in class. Here are 10 of our favorites.

Best Pilothouse: Doggersbank 77 Offshore

dutch yacht builders

More than 700 Doggersbank motoryachts have been built since the 1960s, with the latest model scheduled for delivery in 2025. The robust, offshore vessels are designed by Dutch studio Vripack for long ocean passages, assisted by a high, flared bow. “It prevents green water from hitting the wheelhouse windows in rough seas, and together with the Portuguese bridge, ensures the captain’s view is not obstructed,” Joost Mertens, Doggersbank fleet manager, told Robb Report . “The yacht’s steel hull ensures the yacht sits better in the water making it less vulnerable to wind and high waves.”

Best Deck Configuration: Columbus Crossover 42

dutch yacht builders

The Columbus Crossover 42 is defined by both straight and angled surfaces,  tapered stern sections and a concentration of volume in the bow that is becoming on many explorers. What is atypical is the yacht’s compact but flexible dimensions that accommodate a large cockpit tender and a 108-square-foot swimming pool with relaxation areas. Sold to an U.S. customer, it’s scheduled for delivery in 2025.

Best Multipurpose Stern: Bering B165

dutch yacht builders

Turkish boatbuilder Bering Yachts revealed details of its new 162-foot flagship explorer yacht, the B165 , at the Dubai International Boat Show in March. The yacht can carry 18,400 gallons of fuel, which the builder says will give it a 4,000 nautical mile range when cruising at 12 knots. It also has a 2,640-gallon holding tank. What singles the B165 out among other explorers, however, is its multi-purpose stern area for both function and form. The elongated aft deck has a swimming pool surrounded by sunbeds. When the bulwarks are folded down, the space becomes an even larger overwater terrace. When the pool is not in use, it can be used as a covered storage area for water toys and expedition equipment. The yacht’s two tenders are also stored on the aft, making it a flexible space for both equipment and guests.

Best Family-Friendly Concept: Project Mimer

dutch yacht builders

This 197-foot expedition concept by Tillberg Design of Sweden caters to family travel with a helicopter pad as well as multiple tenders and toys. It’s pitched by the studio as an introduction to true explorer yachting. It has a functional crew layout for efficient operations and an upper deck owner’s suite with a forward terrace and spa pool. With a hull that will be built to the Polar Code Category, the concept also has an optional helipad aft and long list of toys, from an electric luxury tender and two expedition RIBS to quad bikes, a submersible, Jet Skis, and, of course, an amphibious vehicle. The five-decked yacht sleeps 12 guests with crew quarters for 17 and an additional staff member, such as a nanny.

Best Ice Explorer: Damen SeaXplorer 105

dutch yacht builders

Damen’s 345-foot SeaXplorer 105 is the largest model in the SeaXplorer range, with exterior design by Azure Yacht Design. The platform was developed under the guidance of expedition specialists EYOS Expeditions, who considered over 150 design criteria, from the hull form and bridge layout to the tender davits and Zodiac boarding arrangements. But it is EYOS’s expertise in the polar regions—it facilitated the first heli-ski charter in Antarctica and the first 3,200-foot sub dive to the Antarctic midnight zone—that gives the vessel its point of difference. The SeaXplorer has an ice-strengthened hull and a specially shaped icebreaking stern to maneuver through rough terrain.

Best Interior: Project Fox

dutch yacht builders

On top of having a cool name, Project Fox has a bright, contemporary interior, courtesy of London’s Q Design, that is becoming more common on expedition yachts. The full-beam owner’s stateroom is also one of the yacht’s standout features, with its marble en suite and hardwood floors. The salon is also luxe, with white walls that brighten up travel even in areas that are sunlight deprived. Project Fox also has four other staterooms.

Best Autonomy: Project Master

dutch yacht builders

ICON Yachts’s Project Master was a transoceanic offshore support vessel before the Dutch shipyard began a refit to turn it into an explorer yacht (see before and after inset). It’s equipped with diesel-electric hybrid propulsion, a wide beam for multiple tender spaces, a 7,200-nautical mile range, and flexible cabin arrangements for expedition crew. Other features include a science lab and a certified heli-deck. “The yacht’s helicopter and sub capability mean it can offer assistance in areas with challenging access and little infrastructure,” Micca Ferrero, owner of ICON Yachts, told Robb Report . “The design is for the demands of self-sufficient voyages.”

Best Use of Volume: Arcadia Yachts A96

dutch yacht builders

The A96 mixes the lines, volume, and open-plan layout of Arcadia’s Sherpa series with the speed, joystick maneuverability, and quality of the yard’s A range. It’s the first Arcadia to have an Igor Lobanov-designed interior, as well as a high bow and high deckheads for traversing rough water. But its big differentiator is the 214 gross tonnes of volume and 24-foot beam that generate big volumes—4,300 square feet of usable space, which is 30 percent more than on other similar-sized yachts. Low bulwarks and lateral walkways emphasize the sense of openness.

Best Bow: Project Shackleton

dutch yacht builders

This 351-foot build from Lürssen has an inverted bow that looks like an eagle’s beak. The shape is designed to slice through waves with much lower vibration through the hull, while also reducing rock and roll in rough seas. Unlike the quasi-research vessel exteriors of many explorers, this vessel is representative of the changing look of many in this growing segment.

Best Multi-Mode Hull: Azimut Magellano 60

dutch yacht builders

The Magellano 60 isn’t technically an explorer yacht. Think of it as a cruiser  designed for some long-distance travel. But it does have one very interesting feature, what its builder Azimut calls a “dual-mode” hull. The semi-planing shape is designed to optimize fuel consumption (and therefore lower emissions) by about 20 percent (compared to similar-sized vessels) at low and medium speeds. The yacht’s bow is also designed to cut through waves for better seakeeping at a range of speeds. The boat cruises very efficiently at 18 knots but will hit a top end of 26, thus delivering the performance of a planing hull with the benefits of a displacement hull.

On the Belgian Coast, a Design Gallery Where You Can Spend the Night

Plus: hojicha-infused sweets, ceramic watches and more from T’s cultural compendium.

Rooms With a North Sea View

A seaside room with four windows looking out onto the sea. In front, a split chair and a patchwork rug.

Last year, when Micha Pycke, 40, and Albane Paret, 39, bought an apartment in Ostend — a once run-down Belgian seaside town that, in recent years, has become a favorite of artists and designers — they knew they wanted the place to be, says Pycke, “something more than an Airbnb or holiday home.” Instead, the couple, who co-own the Ghent-based arts- and design-focused communications agency Club Paradis, envisioned what he calls “a new kind of space”: essentially, a gallery where guests could stay overnight. To that end, they’ve filled the 1,000-square-foot two-bedroom, which is on the eighth floor of a ’60s-era building overlooking the North Sea, with works by some of their favorite artists and designers, many of whom are also their clients. In the living room, a lacquered wood coffee table by the Dutch designer Linde Freya Tangelder’s studio, Destroyers/Builders , sits atop a limited-edition rug by the Swiss textile artist Christoph Hefti woven with images of foxes. In one of the bedrooms, a copper-colored, ruched-felt tapestry by Rooms Studio — a women-led company from Tbilisi, Georgia — hangs above a Duo seat by the Belgian team Muller Van Severen for Valerie Objects. And if you like something, you can probably take it with you; most of the pieces are for sale, and Pycke and Paret are also happy to connect guests directly with designers. Rates from about $305 a night, paradisapartment.com . — Gisela Williams

The Chefs Embracing the Earthiness of Hojicha

Hojicha — the deep brown roasted leaves and stems typically made from the Japanese green tea bancha — might lack the visual drama of now-ubiquitous matcha but, according to the pastry chefs whipping the pulverized leaves into batter and sprinkling them on cakes, that understated appearance is part of its appeal. The Los Angeles-based chef Gerardo Gonzalez, 41, who first used the tea in a guava-and-coconut custard at his now-shuttered El Rey luncheonette in New York, finds its “light, claylike color really beautiful.” Last year, for a Valentine’s Day collaboration with the downtown New York restaurant Dimes, he added it to the black sesame praline filling of crémeux tarts, which were topped with segmented citrus and lovage leaves. “The bitter, tannic notes of hojicha make something really sweet complex rather than 2-D,” he says. An Vo, 32, of the West Hollywood-based online-only bakery AV Patisserie, says she likes the tea’s “hints of cacao” and “warm, toasty caramel.” She folds hojicha powder into the batter of her spongecake, which is soaked in espresso and finished with a combination of mascarpone and whipped cream. Hojicha’s earthiness also pairs well with ice cream. Jesse, 29, and Javier Zuniga, 33, the couple behind the New York-based ice cream maker Bad Habit, say it gives a smoky depth to their baked Alaska. In Chicago, during her tenure at the bakery Brite, the pastry chef Erika Chan, 32, doubled down on the ingredient, glazing doughnuts in a slick of hojicha-milk syrup and mixing the tea into its yeasted dough. “The flavor,” she says, “reminds me of popcorn.” — Lauren Joseph

Boat Shoes Get a Spring Update, With Fresh Colors and New Shapes

A cocktail ring that brings to life a decades-old sketch.

Bookended by World War I and the collapse of the stock market, the 1920s were a brief and combustible period of glamorous mythmaking. Case in point: the gauzy origins of the attention-grabbing cocktail rings that many a flapper wore on her right-hand index finger, supposedly to signal to a speakeasy bartender that she was looking for a pour of the real stuff. By the late 1950s, a new generation of Hollywood starlets and Stork Club patrons had rediscovered the enormous bijoux, and the New York City-born jeweler Harry Winston, mostly known for his spectacular diamonds set in platinum, began hatching plans for colored cocktail rings of his own. Recently, the house’s designers unearthed in their archives never-used sketches he made during that era; to bring them to life, they added traditional stones like rubies, emeralds and sapphires to a confectionary explosion of modern hard-candy hues: Italian ice blue aquamarines, raspberry red spinels, purplish tourmalines. This platinum ring, with a 15-carat oval tsavorite garnet at its center, big and juicy as a lozenge, is surrounded by peridots, diamonds and pink sapphires: pure sugar shock.
