The Dolphin Ocema 42

The Dolphin Ocema 42 is a cruising catamaran built in Northern Brazil. The boat comes equipped with daggerboards and can thus point higher windward. But it also boasts a smaller wet surface when running and can pull with ease into shallower anchorages – 3 feet ( 0.91m) or less. That means that you can anchor your catamaran far from the crowd (or beach it ), then walk ashore. It also gives you more anchorage space to choose from.

The Outremer 45

The Outremer 45 is a Gerard Danson design. This classic cruising catamaran is unique in that it didn’t undergo mass production like most multihulls. Instead, the French Outremer came from a semi-production manufacturing line where all interior parts are laminated directly to the hull, forming an extremely stiff structure.

One downside to this catamaran is that it comes with a much smaller interior than other boats. Also, it doesn’t come cheap. However, everything else about the Outremer makes it the perfect sailor’s boat because:

  • It features balanced weight distribution, which helps to minimize pitching.

Earlier models featured soft canvas bimini (optional) covering a stainless framework, while later ones had optional overhead composite panels. The latter provides a better option since canvas tends to become waterlogged when it rains. 

You can order the Outremer 45 as an owner version, a club version with additional berths, or a four-cabin layout.

This catamaran embodies a true classic right from the forward cockpit, through the pilothouse, the sleeping cabins, to the galleys.

The Gunboat 62

If you’re looking for a vessel that can fit all your gear plus more during your voyages, then the Gunboat 62 is the ideal cruising catamaran for you. And guess what? You can stuff all your gear and equipment in this vessel and still outperform a similar-sized racing monohull. The boat’s helm seat is not only comfortable but also offers 360-degree visibility, ample storage space, a working surface, and a luxurious cabin. 

The Gunboat 62 is among the best top-performing catamarans in the market, and this particular series set up the Gunboat brand. Gemini 105Mc

The Gemini 105Mc is the ideal cruising catamaran for you if you’re in the market for a boat to use for weekend sailing trips. The boat is also comfortable enough for long cruising vacations since it boasts spacious accommodation, great design, and delivers a stable cruising platform.

There are only 2 Catana production sites in France, this guarantees exceptionally high-quality standards in every boat. The Catana infrastructure is more advanced than that of other catamarans and features spacious bridge-deck clearance and a high freeboard. In addition, its curved daggerboards drastically reduce the drag, while crash boards ensure the buoyancy of any of the Cantana models.  

The Catana 50’s daggerboards angle slightly inward to maximize lift under sail and enhance lateral resistance underwater. They are thus more effective than the long but shallow keels found in other catamarans. As a result, this catamaran performs exceptionally well to windward. When sailing off the wind, raising the boards helps to minimize drag.

The Catana 50 is an ultramodern catamaran designed to make long-distance passages easy and safe. This massive sailboat measures almost 50 feet (15.24m) long and sports a beam of around 26 feet (7.92 m). The vessel’s unique design simulates a penthouse apartment on the deck with 35 to 40m2 (376.74 to 430.56ft2) of space, possibly the largest in a 50ft (15.24m) yacht.

The MC50’s 3.5m-deep (11.48ft) hydraulic centerboards boost the boat’s upwind performance and include a fail-safe if an underwater collision occurs. The boards take only 12 seconds to raise.   • A chined hull is the correct approach, giving the sailor more reserve stability
  • The chine peels off spray when sailing down wind and gives greater dynamic stability
  • The flatter hull panels of a chined hull allow construction from normal flat sheets of PU foam, reducing the weight of the core bond (cores designed to mould around tighter curves “absorb” more resin into their score cuts or honeycomb).
  • The chine sits just below the water line amidships – for several advantages:
  • A 35kg sailor gains approximately the same waterline beam and hence the same hull form stability as a heavier sailor
  • The waterline beam and wetted surface does not change significantly with an increase in helm weight
  • The RS Aero is so light there is less inertial mass to pull against when moving in during a lull or header – compensated for by the flatter hull and increased form stability from the buoyant chine area
  • The chine has a small lip to reduce spray drag and for precise positioning of the computer cut foam panels during construction
  • Fine bow for upwind sailing, stable mid sections and a relatively wide transom.
  • Transom shape fine tuned to ensure the RS Aero planes bow up (analogous to the trim tabs on a powerboat stern).
  • Vertical bows are common in “box rule” dinghies and yachts built to rating systems. We chose a raked bow for this one-design because measured waterline length pressures don’t apply and:
  • It leads to greater flare in the forward 20% of the topsides, giving reserve buoyancy and forgiving handling in waves – it is easier and more efficient during the lamination process, leading to cost and consistency efficiencies in volume production – it makes the Aero’s valuable stacking system possible. Function over fashion.

Gunwale design

  • As the RS Aero is relatively narrow we have optimised the width with the modern approach of running the gunwale parallel to the centreline in the aft half of the boat. Advantages are:
  • Maximum righting moment wherever the helm sits out, irrespective of fore and aft position
  • When capsized the topside buoyancy is kept to a minimum – the boat floats lower allowing easier reach to the daggerboard
  • The abrupt change of deck line at the front of the cockpit allows a fine bow without pushing out the overall width or the topsides forward
  • Easier to sit alongside a RIB or the dock
  • More space to tie the mast sections alongside the boat on a roof-rack
  • The boat can be stored or transported more easily on its side
  • The hull and deck are joined with a conventional gunwale. We have used the “biscuit tin” (smooth) join for close to 10 years on the RS Elite, but chose a U section gunwale for the RS Aero because:
  • It creates an important carbon laminate “box frame” around the boat and distributes rig loads through a light, efficient structure – it makes righting the boat from inverted faster and safer – the gunwale gives a significantly drier and more pleasant ride upwind & tight reaching – it makes the boat much easier to hold when launching and recovering, especially in waves.

Flat panel deck

  • We have used, where possible, a flat panel deck to keep straight load-paths with structural corners – so minimizing weight.
  • Numerous deck profiles were tested to maximise hiking comfort whilst maintaining good “kick off” surfaces when roll tacking – and a secure feeling when sailing downwind in breeze. Styling led temptation to cut-away the deck at the transom was resisted – it is useful to sit on when bearing away in extreme conditions.
  • The mast step is located in the hull by a vertical pin during construction, ensuring mast rake and position are identical on all boats.
  • The pin is removed after manufacture to leave a mast tube drain hole.
  • There is a stainless steel wear protector at the base of the mast tube.

Stacking system

  • The RS Aero is designed to stack – the hull above sits perfectly into the deck below.
  • This allows three boats to be stacked on a conventional road trailer base with small pads between them – double and triple trailers are unnecessary.
  • Efficient stacking allows over 30 boats to be loaded into a 40’ shipping container – minimising freight cost and carbon footprint in transport to dealers or regattas.

Construction

  • Every aspect of the simple shape has been considered to minimise weight and maximise cost-efficient manufacture:
  • Flatter panels on the chined hull allow construction from normal flat sheets of PU foam, reducing the weight of the core bond
  • “Chine” angles on the deck add form stiffness without additional weight
  • Low surface area reduces weight and material costs
  • Simple shape reduces time in the manufacturing process
  • Epoxy resin is used for its high strength and low water absorption properties.
  • Woven glass matt is used throughout the hull.
  • Carbon fibre is used in all high load areas such as the hull and deck around the mast step, the hiking region of the deck, all around the gunwales and transom.
  • Due to its ultra-light weight and the high elongation at break (shatter resistance) of the epoxy resin system, the RS Aero has proved to be remarkably durable.
  • Yet the boat is so astonishingly light it is possible to carry it up the beach single handed by holding the top of the daggerboard and the boom! Pulling the boat up the beach on a trolley makes you smile.
  • Young sailors and small women can lift the RS Aero onto a roof-rack.
  • The tooling has been CNC machined to give maximum control over shape and symmetry.

Dynamic Three Rig System

  • From day one we assumed a requirement for three rigs of differing sail areas to cater for the desired crew weight range: RS Aero 5 – RS Aero 7 – RS Aero 9.
  • We have developed rigs with sufficient control to totally flatten and twist the head of the sail upwind reducing the healing moment. This allows a greater sail area to be carried – a big benefit downwind and in lighter conditions.
  • Working closely with a world-leading carbon fibre tube manufacturer we have produced the three rigs using a common top-mast and boom, yet radically differing stiffness bottom sections. The differing deck-level bend and stiffness of the three rigs ensure the boat is well balanced, without resorting to a permanently pre-bent lower section for the smallest sail.
  • Even with the smallest RS Aero rig the sail-area : hull-weight ratio is significantly higher than most existing hiking single-handers, due to the incredibly light weight of the RS Aero. So even the RS Aero 5 enjoys the amazingly responsive feel that makes the boat so exciting.
  • The largest rig is 5.5kg lighter than the equivalent in aluminium alloy and cutting-edge production method provides for tight stiffness and weight control.
  • The tracked mast and halyard are more practical than a sleeved luff – much easier when stepping mast in breeze and suiting full length top battens.
  • The rig is positioned well forward in the boat to provide a good distance between the mast and the centre-mainsheet to reduce sheet loads and for ease of gybing, without the risk of snagging associated with a transom led mainsheet.
  • A new rig for lighter women – A new RS Aero “6” rig, for lighter women, has been in development over recent months. It will enhance the RS Aero’s suitability to build women’s participation in the Olympic arena – and the RS Aero Class is likely to introduce this rig anyway. We propose final design sign-off in conjunction with the WS team and Olympic level sailors as soon as applicable.
  • This is the greatest area of conflict between styling pressures and the performance requirements of the RS Aero.
  • It is not possible to produce a Mylar sail that will cope with the wide range of mast bend of a responsive carbon rig, in different wind strengths and on different points of sailing. This is due to the lack of bias (diagonal) stretch of the fabric. Mylar film is stable in all directions.
  • We have, therefore, chosen a high denier Dacron sail fabric with a low filler content that offers good durability and a high level of user-friendliness.
  • The RS Aero has a vertical daggerboard for ease of use.
  • The daggerboard is glass/carbon construction from CNC milled tooling, to a modern section developed to reduce downwind drag whilst still generating enough lift upwind.
  • The unusual profile is designed to fill the daggerboard hull slot until the point where the knuckle is reached – minimising drag.
  • The tapered tip below the knuckle reduces tip losses.
  • Evidence exists that a leading edge knuckle provides greater stability of flow – it is not uncommon in birds!

Dagger Board vs Swingkeel

What are the advantages and disadvantages between a daggerboard and a swingkeel. I am looking to buy a Mac 26 mostly because you can trailer it, I am very new to sailing and am unsure the differance between sailing a mac 26 with a swing keel vs sailing an older one with a centerboard?

The specs will say that all things equal, the D is slightly faster than the S. I think that there are enough other variables to overcome that. What I like most about the S is that the centerboard will kick up in shallow water.  

Re:centerboard vs. daggerboard. I spent the better part of the day today sailing in water ranging from 3' to 15'. Most of it was in the 4 to 6 foot range. A centerboard that kicks up is ideal for my bay waters. I probably would have torn up a daggerboard. Just study your water you will be sailing in. I like the idea of a daggerboard but it just flat will not work where I sail.  

Here's what the factory says about a dagger board vs. a swing keel. This is taken from the factory website and describes differences between the 26M and the 26X. "A DAGGERBOARD HAS REPLACED THE CENTERBOARD Better performance is the big reason for the change. Here are a lot more reasons. 1. LESS INTERFERENCE WITH THE INTERIOR A centerboard trunk presents a 16" high problem from the mast almost back to the steps. Unfortunately, this ridge dominates the interior plan, and made it essential to bring the seating structure on one side out beyond the centerline. This forces a dinette type of configuration, which makes it more difficult to have a good conversational type seating for a bunch of crew members. It also reduced the interior floor space (and thus moving around space) by a significant margin. The daggerboard trunk, which is partially hidden by the galley, eliminated these problems. 2. IMPROVED STRUCTURE The daggerboard trunk takes the full downward thrust of the mast to the keel of the boat. The daggerboard requires a much smaller opening in the hull, which helps reduce drag and keep structural weight down. 3. NO ELECTROLYSIS OR LEAKS The daggerboard requires no metallic parts below the waterline. There are no holes in the hull to leak, or pins to wear. 4. EASIER MAINTENANCE The retraction cable is less subject to wear, and it can be easily replaced. The board itself can be lifted out through the deck for cleaning, inspection or repair. Removal of a centerboard is a tougher job. 5. QUIETER AT AN ANCHORAGE. Daggerboards are a lot quieter and subject to less wear when the boat is moored or at anchor."

my .02... I have a daggerboard, and have not had problems w/ grounding. Last weekend I was sailing in 16knts w/ reefed main, and about 1.5-2' of daggerboard. she tracked fine. I do like the increased strenght and low maintence of the daggerboard. however there are some cabin and cockpit improvements on the later S models I do desire. D's are typically 1k or more less in price.  

I have a swing centerboard, and like Beamreach, I sail where it's occasionally too shallow for the board all the way down. It's very nice to have the board pivot up and then drop down. The big downside seems to be increased maintenance. Eventually, you'll probably have to replace the pivot bolt. There have been a lot of postings about that over the last few years. If I were in your position, I'd probably make the decision based on whether I sail in shallow water. If not, I'd probably favor the daggerboard.

This all depends on what 1 drinks, I drink Gin, and sometimes forget to tell the wife to riaise the centerboard, so for me and my 26s, this is a good thing,

Although the daggerboard does not kick up like a centerboard, it raises and lowers easily for shallow water. I have my daggerboard line marked where it holds the daggerboard at the same depth as the rudders for navigating shallow waters. I am not usually travelling at a very high speed in shallow waters so if the daggerboard does ground it will be at a very slow speed and I would rather be stopped by a stronger daggerboard than have the weaker rudders hit and possibly break. The daggerboard can be raise or lowered to as many increments as one wants along its' depth, there is no leaving it permanently lowered all the way down as some would imply. There is nothing wrong with a daggerbaord, it has its' own advantages.

Great little day sailer. It has a standard dagger board but is missing the brass wedge bracket. Easy to replace. It also has a white racing dagger board. Please see pictures. The sail is more of a racing style than most. This boat really moves. There are a few minor dings here and there. Nothing major. It is ready to sail. Trailer has lights and has good bearings. This is a 2006 Vanguard Laser sailboat in Excellent condition. This boat was used in the 2006 laser radial world championships and comes with the radial sail that was used, the sail has Volvo and FRA written on it and the sail number is a registered number with the ILCA North American region. This boat comes with everything you need to go sailing or racing it has a light weight trailer, complete radial sail and mast, complete full sail and mast, all the rigging, dagger board, rudder (does have a chip out of edge), carbon fiber tiller, hull cover, top cover, and mast bag. This is a Sunfish sailboat 14' with trailer. The boat is from 1972. A clear title comes with the trailer. It has a new wheel, tire and hitch with 1 7/8" socket. The sail is in good condition and has the emblem of the black sunfish on it. The two aluminum booms are both there, however the main mast is missing. It has some cosmetic scratches around the seating area, which can be filled in. Pictures of the rudder and the back of the boat show the metal hooks to attach the rudder, which is made of mahogany wood and aluminum. Though I have sailed this boat for many years, but not lately, I forgot how to attach it. The tiller does not have the extension, but it can be easily added. The sail is complete with aluminum booms and pulleys etc. The dagger board is included, as well as an extra paddle. Will Ship Worldwide.

The MacGregor 26S MacGregor 26 Swing Keel Sailboat 1994 with Trailer in Excellent Condition ready to Sail! This is a 1994 MacGregor 26S Sailboat with trailer and 8 hp outboard motor in excellent condition. It accepts a 2 inch ball mount trailer hitch. The total trailer weight is about 2000 lbs, so pretty much any V-6 vehicle can tow this without any extra equipment. Any Minivan for example will work fine. It includes everything needed to sail. Three sails including a main, a roller furling Genoa and a drifter / spinnaker are included . This sailboat is wheel steered with binnacle mounted motor remote controls and instruments. Everything is in excellent condition and the trailer tires are brand new Goodyear Marathon trailer tires. It also has an extra motor mount for a trolling motor or small outboard secondary engine. This boat has many upgrades including wheel steering and a Rudder Craft Mac 26S HDPE High Performance Replacement Rudder as well as the stock rudder as a spare, a MMSD pump out porta toilet, a CDI roller furling Genoa and a main sail cover as well as life lines and bow and stern pulpits, a swim ladder, a solar panel and an Autohelm ST 30 Bidata to name a few. The 8 HP Tohatsu (Nissan) outboard model M8B also has electric start and an alternator. The MacGregor 26S, 1990 to 1995, replaced the dagger board with a swing centerboard (which kicks up in an accidental grounding) and made other smaller changes. Together, the 26D and 26S are often called the "classic" MacGregor 26, and sometimes the 26C. Owners of these earlier models tend to refer to them as "the real sailboats" prior to the changes coming with the MacGregor 26X. The V-berth can handle 2 people/kids and has storage underneath, the settee can accommodate another person and plenty more storage under there, in the cabin galley /kitchen area is a sink and a mirrored bulkhead with plenty of storage under the sink. Behind the ladder going into the cockpit is a queen sized, super comfortable bed which is also located right below the cockpit. This boat has a POP-UP roof over the galley area that rotates up and out of the way while boat is at anchor / berth which gives unlimited head room in the cabin. This vessel includes all tools and supplies needed for maintenance and use like a nice Windex for mast top mounting. a manual bilge pump, an anchor with rode, a new gallon of bottom paint, a new fuel tank with hose, a remote controlled stereo, cockpit cushions, a wind scoop etc. I am the third owner of this nice Mac and all paperwork including the Wisconsin Title and the original purchase contract when new are included as well as a IL trailer title from the previous owner. Please call owner Avery at 303-587-5808. Boat is in Aurora, Colorado. This is an amazing 1984 sailboat by the MacGregor yacht company, that's right It's classified as a yacht. The canopy comes up and has over 6 feet of headroom. There is also a camping pop-up cover for comfortable sleeping at night even through rainstorms. There's a bathroom and sink/kitchen that is mobile for convenience. 7.5 hp motor. It has a couple of fantastic upgrades, a mast stepping system, a genoa auto furl. The jib/Jenny is already furled on the main stay and has a automatic feature to quick release and roll it back up should you hit rough conditions. This is a swing keel boat, and it has come in handy quite a bit. Way better than fixed Keel and the safety feature is better than dagger board in my opinion. I've done a little bit of upgrade wood work so you can fit a queen mattress in the main seating area once the table has been taken down. This has been blissful. I also realized that the same woodwork can be used on the upper stern seating portion for the same inflatable queen mattress. It's amazing to sleep under the stars in a boat. Also, I learned that you can put two hammocks on the back of the boat in the safety railing mounts and they fit perfectly. Makes me not want to get rid of the boat at all. When the Keel is up, the boat only drafts 18 inches of water, that means you can take the sailboat where only canoes dare to go. The trailer is in excellent condition and this boat is sea worthy and ready to sail. Will consider trading for a pontoon boat or Bayliner with a cabin. Love this boat but my bf keeps hitting his head too hard. I'm not entirely convinced to get rid of it, the feeling of sleeping on the water is just too fantastic. The paint is in good condition, a few scratches here and there but no signs of rust on the keel cable or any metal. Some of the paint shows some stress at places, you would expect the fiberglass to be stressed, but the fiberglass itself is in perfect condition. Both of the sails are in good condition, no dry rot at all. I grew up sailing with my dad and had him look over the boat, and he was really impressed. Considering this boat was made the same year I was born, it's in better condition than I am.

I built my first boat in 2005 and found the building process to be almost as much fun as being out on the water. Since that time I have built several boats, some for me and some for others.   In December 2019 I decided to buy John Owens' business of making rudders, daggerboards and tillers for several production boats. I always found that these were some of my favorite parts to make during a boat build.  The foil is such an intimate part to the performance of the boat and making one that water would flow smoothly over fascinated me.

M ARQUETTE, Mich. (WJMN) – Spring is coming, and it is the perfect time to look into finding the perfect boat, side by side, or four-wheeler for the summer.

“So today what we have going on is not going to the Dome Show Sale, we did not go to the Dome,” said Matt Winfield, sales manager at Ride North. “Everyone is used to us being there. Yesterday, today, and tomorrow we are going to be doing the same prices that you are used to at the Dome. It is going to be worthwhile. there is going to be thousands of dollars off the side by sides and boats. We are going to have everything here on the floor to be able to take a peek at pontoon boats, fishing boats, ski boats, ATVs, and much more. Whatever you need to be able to get out on the water.”

Not only do they have the products you need to get out on the water this summer, but they also have some fun things customers can partake in.

“Not going to the dome is going to make things easier for us but better for the customer. They will be able to get the products ready a lot faster,” said Winfield. “We will have everything in here, warm happy ready for them to see. We can get it out to them a lot faster with the weather the way it is. We have food, drinks, stuff for people to snack on, enter in for drawings. We are going to be giving away a four-wheeler. We have 4 different models for someone to choose from. Depending on what they do, how they ride, they are going to have some options to pick there. We are also doing hourly prizes. So, we are giving away prizes to people that come in and get entered for it. We have a little bit of fun going on here today.”
