This $8 Billion Turtle-Shaped Yacht Is Not a Joke
![biggest yacht turtle Rendering of a turtleshaped yacht](https://media.architecturaldigest.com/photos/6376cbee7fb358a52957ec43/16:9/w_2560%2Cc_limit/PANGEOS%2520ANIMATIONS%2520CLEANED.347.jpg)
Among many things that weren’t on our Bingo cards for 2022, a giant turtle-shaped yacht—which is also being described as a floating city —is certainly at the top of the list. And yet, here we are. As CNN reported, an Italian design firm, Lazzarini Design Studio , has drafted plans for a massive boat shaped like an oversized tortoise with outstretched flippers. The vessel is so big that it’s not even being called a superyacht , but rather designers have described it as a terayacht. As such, it was given an appropriately big name, Pangeos , a nod to Pangea, the ancient supercontinent that once incorporated almost all of Earth’s landmasses. According to Lazzarini, the ship will be big enough to hold various hotels, apartments, condos, shopping centers, parks, and other amenities for up to 60,000 guests. The yacht will even have ship and aircraft ports so guests can visit when Pangeos isn’t docked near land. Which is helpful since, as of now, the company doesn’t foresee any strict itinerary, but rather expects the turtle to simply coast around the world.
![biggest yacht turtle Aerial image of a turleshaped yacht](https://media.architecturaldigest.com/photos/6376cbee926fbf1082a2c1b0/master/w_1600%2Cc_limit/PANGEOS%2520ANIMATIONS%2520CLEANED.358.jpg)
Many of the amenities and homes are designed around a central town square.
Extending 1,800 feet in length and measuring 2,000 feet at its widest point, the boat is poised to be the largest floating structure ever built. That is, of course, if it does get built, which is a whole other obstacle in and of itself. As the Pangeos website explains, “the terayacht needs a terashipyard,” which doesn’t currently exist. The project requires a yard that is about 200 miles wide and 180 miles long, which also means dredging about 0.4 square miles of the sea with a circular dam. Once the yacht is constructed, the dam can open, flooding the area and essentially launching the vessel. Lazzarini has currently suggested the coast of Saudi Arabia as the ideal location for construction.
Since the goal is usually to minimize drag, boats don’t usually stray from the standard V shape—and are even less frequently formed like marine animals—but Pangeos ’s flippers are more than just a peculiarity. According to the company, the extremities will capture kinetic energy from the waves, which will allow the boat to cruise perpetually without emissions. The rooftop area would also be equipped with solar panels for additional power, should it be necessary; electric engines are also included in the design.

Within the terraced villa, guests can find houses, buildings, and rooftop terraces, with an upper zone that offers landing of various flying vehicles.
According to the firm, the total cost to build the massive vessel will be nothing short of $8 billion. Construction will also take, at minimum, eight years, and Lazzarini doesn’t expect that this could even begin until 2025. With a hefty price tag and decent wait time, the company has conjured a plan to alleviate both. Designed as an NFT crowdfunding project, the firm is selling “Unreal Estate,” allowing interested buyers to purchase virtual boarding tickets, hotel rooms, and even houses for a metaverse version of the yacht, which the company says will be ready for (virtual) boarding by 2023.

The design studio Lazzarini has unveiled plans to build a new $8bn terayacht shaped like a giant turtle .
The size of the new luxury boat is difficult to comprehend: it will be twice the size of the Roman Colosseum, a precocious 550 meters long and 610 meters wide. It is expected to cost $8bn to construct, and its price tag will likely put it beyond the purchasing power of all but roughly a thousand people on Earth.
Someone, or some company, will be buying plenty with their money. The ship will include numerous villas and apartments, shopping complexes, parks, hotels, and ports for private planes and smaller ships, according to reporting from MSN . The terayacht will be named Pangeos, after the supercontinent Pangea that broke up roughly 195 million years ago.
![biggest yacht turtle The interior of the ship](https://static.independent.co.uk/2022/11/30/20/Screen%20Shot%202022-11-30%20at%202.37.33%20PM.png)
Per MSN , construction on the ship would begin in 2033 if the project is approved. He cites reports that designers have identified a location at King Abdulla Port north of the Saudi Arabian capital of Jeddah as the ideal location to build, though there remain several hurdles to clear there.
Despite the fact that only the wealthiest sliver of humanity will likely be able to enjoy the ship, should it ultimately be built, proponents of the project have set up a crowdfunding initiative to help finance construction.
![biggest yacht turtle The ship viewed from above](https://static.independent.co.uk/2022/11/30/20/Screen%20Shot%202022-11-30%20at%202.37.17%20PM.png)
The crowdfunding site tells visitors that “Pangeos is not existing (yet) but we can make it real.” People can purchase a virtual ticket for entrance to the boat or a range of NFTs. There is also the option to download a 3D representation of the space that a person virtually purchases.
“An ambitious project needs ambitious guests! We believe a virtual space is the first step into a real development of the project, for this reason an Unreal Engine METAVERSE is now under construction,” the page reads.

$8 billion turtle-shaped luxury yacht could become the largest floating structure ever built

The latest luxury boat to hit the market is Pangeos -- named after Pangea, a supercontinent that existed from 200 million to 335 million years ago. And if those seem like big numbers, wait until you hear how many dollars it'll take to construct it: $8 billion, according to designers Lazzarini. — CNN
If funded and built, the sea turtle-shaped "terayacht" would be the largest floating structure ever built, spanning 1,800 feet long and 2,000 feet wide. Dubbed a “floating city,” the boat would feature hotels, shopping malls, parks, and ports for smaller vessels and aircraft to connect.
Due to its size, the yacht would require the construction of a special dam that would flood to levitate it before being launched. The designers have noted Saudi Arabia ’s King Abdullah Port as a potential building location. The shipyard would stretch approximately 2,133 feet wide and 1,969 feet long.
The yacht’s hull would be comprised of 30,000 "cells," and its draft would stretch 98 feet. It would be capable of moving at a speed of five knots. The boat’s “arms” would draw energy from the drag and waves that break against it. Rooftop solar panels would also provide power. Unlike cruise ships or other commercial sea voyages, Pangeos wouldn’t operate out of a port or have a set itinerary, "it would simply cruise around, making the journey the destination." Lazzarini's team hopes for construction on this massive undertaking in 2033, with an estimated eight-year build period.

Truly shell-arious! It’s NOT going to cost 8 billion, more like 800 billion. The environmental cost is only two; that is the resources of two whole planets. What’s their next trick concept? A ginormous shrimp?
Here for the ginormous shrimp, lemme know when it launches so I can shell out some money to high-tail it there.

The steel hull comprises 30,000 individual “cells” that would help keep Pangeos afloat. The tera-turtle can sail around the world nonstop sans emissions on account of a virtually endless supply of green energy. The vessel is covered in solar panels that generate clean power from the sun for the hotel load and propulsion system. Powered by nine electric motors of 16,800 hp each, Pangeos could cruise at a maximum speed of 5 knots. The “wings” could also draw more power from the waves and wind.
Onboard, Pangeos is a mix between a five-star resort, a cruise ship and a city. Lazzarini says she can accommodate as many as 60,000 guests via a combination of villas and apartments. Other highlights include a rooftop mall, sprawling gardens, several pools and a supersized beach club. Naturally, the yacht is fitted with helipads, hangars and marinas to store choppers, toys and tenders.

In terms of construction, Lazzarini specified “the terayacht needs a terashipyard.” Essentially, Pangeos is too big to be built at an existing yard and thus would need a custom facility. Saudi Arabia has been put forward as a potential location. The designers estimate the vessel could be delivered in eight years at a cost of $8 billion.

Pangeos: Gigantic floating city design could become the world's largest boat
In a time of economic crisis, what could be more outré than a superyacht? Why, a terayacht of course -- a name given to vessels even bigger than super, mega and gigayachts.
The latest luxury boat to hit the market is Pangeos -- named after Pangea, a supercontinent that existed from 200 million to 335 million years ago. And if those seem like big numbers, wait until you hear how many dollars it'll take to construct it: $8 billion, according to designers Lazzarini.
Little wonder it's so expensive when this, if funded, will become the largest floating structure ever built, CNN reported. Looking rather like a Bond villain's lair, it'll sprawl 550 meters (1,800 feet) long, and 610 meters (2,000 feet) wide.
![biggest yacht turtle](https://cdn.abcotvs.com/dip/images/12464424_hypatia-h_0229c38be57465c6bbeaf16ce8adde2a-h_30dfea7e5e85298c53f151c04787036a.jpg)
A full-on "floating city" according to Lazzarini, the yacht will have space for hotels, shopping malls, parks and even ports for smaller ships and aircraft to get guests there in style. And style there will be, given that it's shaped like a tera-turtle.
It'd take a special place to build it, too -- one that doesn't currently exist. The designers have posited Saudi Arabia as a location. Around one square kilometer of sea would need to be dredged and a circular dam constructed before the build could commence. The designers have earmarked a space at King Abdullah Port, 81 miles north of Jeddah as the ideal location.
Divided into blocks like an actual city, Pangeos has a port and main square, off which other buildings spiral. An "upper shell" area, surrounded by garden spaces, would act as a landing spot for aircraft.
Below the living space would be 30,000 "cells" which would keep the structure afloat. The basement would be made of steel. It'd have a massive 30 meters, or 98 feet, of draft, and be able to cruise at a speed of five knots -- although the "wings" would draw energy from the drag and waves breaking against the ship. The roof would have solar panels to power the yacht.
Rather than operating out of a particular port or having a set itinerary, the tera-turtle would simply cruise around, making the journey the destination. Again, perfect for a Bond villain.
Lazzarini hopes that construction could start in 2033, with a build time of eight years. Want to see it on the water? There's a crowdfunding initiative which allows you to buy anything from a virtual entrance ticket ($16) to a VIP apartment ($169) via NFT. That's for a virtual apartment, of course -- but if you want to buy a real one, you can put that money towards a deposit for the real thing.
Now to find the rest of those $8 billion...

Pangeos The Terayacht: World's Largest Floating City
By Heather Collier
Double the size of the Roman Colosseum, Pierpaolo Lazzarini returns with a new, monumental £6.8 billion terayacht concept. The turtle-shaped vessel known as 'Pangeos' is expected to be 550m long and 610m at its widest point. If achieved, this terayacht would become the largest floating structure ever built.
At its peak, Pangeos would be capable of hosting up to 60,000 guests; a floating city for ultra-high-net-worths.
Guests can unwind by staying in one of the many hotels, exploring its plethora of shopping centres, parks, beach clubs, resorts, as well as ship and aircraft ports, according to Italian design studio Lazzarini.
In recent years, Lazzarini has made a name for itself for conjuring up some of the industry's most daring, out-of-this-world concepts, including vessels that can fly, ginormous on-board garages and futuristic ships that push the boundaries of imagination.
They hope the ambitious scheme dating back to 2009 will soon become a reality following an NFT-related crowdfunding initiative to sell virtual spaces on the watercraft. If achieved, the project is said to take a jaw-dropping eight years to build.
Lazzarini have hinted that the vessel would have its very own shipyard built specifically for its creation, and would be launched out of Saudi Arabia.
" A Terayacht needs a Terashipyard ," the designers said. " The conception of a similar-sized vessel, involves the realisation of a specific shipyard/dam infrastructure that floods to levitate the terayacht when it will be launched."
" The imagined Terashipyard infrastructure is 650 metres wide and 600 metres long, providing direct access to the sea. "
With 30 metres of draft, the ship's enormous hull is made up of nine different bows and subdivided into several blocks. The structure also boasts a giant gate aft that allows vessels to enter this floating metropolis.
It would be powered by nine high-temperature superconductor (HTS) engines, each fully electric motor capable of a mind-blowing 16,800hp and powered by various onboard energy sources.
The design team also claim it would be able to use "wings" to cruise without expending too much energy, making this super-structure highly eco-conscious.
" Pushed from a jet drive transmission, the tera-structure will be able to cruise at a speed of five knots ," Lazzarini said.
" While sailing, the large wings will gain energy from the breaking of the waves and Pangeos will cruise perpetually without emissions around the planet Earth's seas. Further, the rooftop area is lined with solar panels, which provide part of the necessary clean energy to power the terayacht ."
In terms of accommodation, guests will be able to stay in a wide variety of luxury residences, from apartments and houses to "super villas" and royal palaces.
" The virtual spaces of the watercraft can also be purchased under an NFT collection, and users will be able to collect certain content and access the virtual properties with their credentials ," Lazzarini said.
Similar credentials will also be used as a property deposit in case of real construction.
" The terayacht proposal takes its name from Pangea, the supercontinent that existed millions of years ago during the late Paleozoic and early Mesozoic eras ," Lazzarini adds.

If Constructed, This Big Arse Turtle Will Be the Biggest Boat in the World
![biggest yacht turtle Ky Stewart Avatar](https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/1a487e033924d0676c797b0bb39fdb11?s=56&d=https%3A%2F%2Fgizmodo.com.au%2Fwp-content%2Fthemes%2Fgmg%2Fassets%2Fimages%2Fgizmodo%2Favatar.png&r=g)
If you haven’t heard of the term terayacht before, it’s a name given to vessels larger than super, mega and gigayachts . Yes, that is a real term that many of us regular citizens will never have in our vocabulary because most of us can barely afford a two-bedroom apartment in Sydney, let alone a terayacht that doubles as a floating city.
Pangeos is named after yep, you guessed it, Pangea. The very supercontinent that existed from 200 million to 335 million years ago. It’s a bit on the nose. A giant floating city named after a giant supercontinent? A tad cliché.
![biggest yacht turtle floating city Pangeos](https://gizmodo.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/18/www.lazzarinidesignstudio-1.jpg)
According to Lazzarini, Pangeos the terayacht will be 550 metres long and 610 metres at its widest point, the wings. These wings will also offer 19 private villas and 69 apartments on each side. The designers say that Pangeos will be double the size of the Colosseum.
You can check out the video of Pangeos below. Be warned, it will make you feel wildly inferior.
As you can see, the yacht will have hotels, villas, resorts, shopping centres, parks (???) and ports for smaller ships and aircraft to allow guests access to the boat. It will be, in all essence of the word, a complete floating city.
Underneath the living areas, there will be 30,000 ‘cells’ that would allow for Pangeos to float. According to designs, the basement will also be made of steel with 30 metres of draft to allow for the terayacht to move at five knots.
I have a few questions when I watch this video.
Firstly, why? Secondly, why? Are we not all in a global economic crisis? Should we not be focusing our attention on other things than constructing a floating city terayacht? Just food for thought.
I was going to ask who had asked for Pangeos but I know my answer will lie amongst billionaires.
Lazzarini has said that Saudi Arabia is the intended location for the building of Pangeos, particularly King Abdullah Port. Approximately one square kilometre of the sea will need to be dredged with a circular dam constructed before the building can start.

In saying all this, I do actually quite like the turtle design they’ve gone for, it’s very cute. However, it is a little ironic that the massive boat is shaped like an endangered species when constructing the vessel may cause further environmental harm. The designs of the terayacht do have solar panels lining the rooftop which Lazzarini says is to generate clean energy to power the floating city.
And no, the floating city won’t be doing any international travel. It will literally just float around in one area.
Just when you thought it couldn’t get worse, it does. Lazzarini has started a crowdfunding initiative, called ‘Unreal Estate’ where people can buy virtual entrance tickets to a VIP apartment through NFTs. Yes, this is hell, welcome.

A Huge Yacht Shaped Like A Turtle Could Be The Largest On Earth
It must be mighty nice to have 8 billion dollars to construct a yacht! On Instagram, CNN wrote , “in a time of economic crisis, what could be more outré than a superyacht? Why, a terayacht of course.”
The caption was paired with an aerial image of a luxury boat shaped like a sea turtle. The Lazzarini firm, which is overseeing the ambitious project, said construction would start around 2033. It won’t be finished for about a decade after that.
What Will The Boat Be Called?
View this post on Instagram A post shared by CNN (@cnn)
If the boat is built, it’ll be named Pangeos- a play on Pangea, the pre-historic super continent.
According to CNN, “Pangea existed from 200 million to 335 million years ago.”
How Big Will It Be?
Pangeos will function as a floating city, complete with “hotels, shopping malls, parks and even ports for smaller ships and aircraft to get guests there in style.”
CNN said, “it’d have a massive 30 meters, or 98 feet, of draft, and be able to cruise at a speed of five knots — although the ‘wings’ would draw energy from the drag and waves breaking against the ship.”
Where Will It Be Built?
It hasn’t been decided as of yet, but Saudi Arabia is of interest to the designers.
CNN explained, “around one square kilometer of sea would need to be dredged and a circular dam constructed before the build could commence. The designers have earmarked a space at King Abdullah Port, 81 miles north of Jeddah as the ideal location.”
What Other Features Will The Boat Have?
There will be a main square, ports and gardens.
Solar panels along the roof will power the watercraft.
CNN reported, “below the living space would be 30,000 cells which would keep the structure afloat.”

This $8 billion turtle-shaped yacht is not a joke
![biggest yacht turtle Rendering of a turtleshaped yacht](https://media.houseandgarden.co.uk/photos/63a1e13e96f5c9dbf9231cfe/16:9/w_2560%2Cc_limit/PANGEOS%2520ANIMATIONS%2520CLEANED.347.jpg)
![biggest yacht turtle Aerial image of a turleshaped yacht](https://media.houseandgarden.co.uk/photos/63a1e13f0c548cf0cafab95c/master/w_1600%2Cc_limit/PANGEOS%2520ANIMATIONS%2520CLEANED.358.jpg)
![biggest yacht turtle Rendering of a terraced villa around a central square](https://media.houseandgarden.co.uk/photos/63a1e14088e2d802928c64f9/master/w_1600%2Cc_limit/PANGEOS%2520ANIMATIONS%2520CLEANED.338.jpg)
Designed as an NFT crowdfunding project, the firm is selling “Unreal Estate,” allowing interested buyers to purchase virtual boarding tickets, hotel rooms, and even houses for a metaverse version of the yacht, which the company says will be ready for (virtual) boarding by 2023.

double the size of the colosseum, pierpaolo lazzarini’s pangeos terayacht is a floating city
Pierpaolo lazzarini’s newest monumental terayacht.
Proposing a giant floating continent, double the size of the Roman Colosseum, Pierpaolo Lazzarini returns with a new innovative, monumental terayacht concept. The Pangeos watercraft is an itinerant floating city, comprising various hotels, shopping centers, parks, ship and aircraft ports, and all other facilities needed to house up to 60,000 guests in the middle of the sea.
The terayacht proposal takes its name from Pangea, the supercontinent that existed millions of years ago during the late Paleozoic and early Mesozoic eras. Translating this into a somewhat futuristic expression, Pangeos extends its length for 550 meters (1,800 ft) and measures 610 meters (2,000 ft) at its widest point — the wings. If realized, the turtle-shaped vessel will become the world’s largest structure ever built.
pangeos — the travelling, floating city
With 30 meters of draft, Pierpaolo Lazzarini’s gigantic hull is composed of nine different bows and subdivided into several blocks. This starts from the entrance of the port area to the main square, that extends into a wide terraced villa and subsequently leads to private houses, buildings, and rooftop terraces, with an upper ‘shell’ zone that offers landing of various flying vehicles. In the lower space, the design team houses 30,000 cells or cluster compartments and provides an unsinkable floating solution for the basement, which is conceived to be realized mainly in steel. Pangeos also integrates an imagined Terashipyard infrastructure that is 650 meters wide and 600 meters long, providing direct access to the sea.
Pangeos is equipped with 9 HTS engines. Each full electric motor is capable of 16,800 hp and is powered by various in-board energy sources. Pushed from a jet drive transmission, the tera-structure will be able to cruise at a speed of 5 knots. While sailing, the large wings will gain energy from the braking of the waves and Pangeos will cruise perpetually without emissions around the planet Earth seas. Further, the rooftop area is lined with solar panels which provide part of the necessary clean energy to power the terayacht.
realizing the world’s largest structure
While Pangeos is currently an unrealized concept, Pierpaolo Lazzarini hopes it will soon become something more than just a computer animation. To construct the terayacht — the biggest structure ever built on the planet — an estimated $8 Billion will be needed, with a timeline of approximately eight years. The designer has launched a crowdfunding initiative on the page of the Terayacht .
The virtual spaces of the watercraft can also be purchased under an NFT collection, and users will be able to collect certain content and access in the virtual properties with their credentials. The same credentials will also work as a property deposit in case of a real construction.

The Arabian Business reported that when it is finished, it will be the largest floating structure ever built. It is now under development. Italian design firm Lazzarini designed the luxurious project.
The floating city would be 1,800 feet long, Lazzarini told Arabian Business. The wings of Pangeos would be its widest point, measuring 610 meters (2,000 feet).
The floating boat will also contain 19 villas and 64 apartments on each of its turtle wings. A rooftop garden, mall, and beach club will also be included in Pangeos' amenities.
A 'Terashipyard' infrastructure measuring 650 meters in width and 600 meters in length will also be part of the unique building's design, giving it easy access to the sea.
As per the report, Pangeos is designed to sail nonstop around the world.
It will be furnished with practically endless green energy sources. Waves from the ocean and the roof's solar panels are likely to power the engine.
The huge turtle-shaped yacht is expected to move at a maximum speed of 5 knots (5.7 mph/9.2 kph).
The designing firm, Lazzarini, has not yet revealed the interiors. They have expected to invest $8 billion in construction over 8 years.

Saudi Arabia’s $8b Turtle-Shaped Yacht Would Be a Floating City That Breaks Records
![biggest yacht turtle](https://www.gulf-insider.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Untitled-34-780x470.jpg)
Saudi Arabia wants to build a massive turtle-shaped yacht that’s both a vessel, and a floating city.
Not only will it be massive, it will also be massively expensive.
Saudi Arabia plans to spend around $8 billion on this project.
The yacht is called Pangeos, after Pangea, the supercontinent that existed 200 million years ago – but this is unlike anything we’ve seen before.
At 1,800 feet (550 meters), this would set a world record for the largest floating structure ever made.
It is three times longer than the largest yacht in the world, the Azzam.
![biggest yacht turtle](https://www.gulf-insider.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Untitled-28-1024x581.jpg)
According to Lazzarini, the design studio that’s working on the project with Saudi Arabia, this is technically a yacht.
It can cover great distances by floating on water, and it can be moored to the pierside.
However, the idea is to turn this into a full-on, self-sustaining city.
The Saudi Arabia cruise ship turtle will include shopping malls, hotels, restaurants, public parks, ports for smaller ships and, of course, residential buildings.
![biggest yacht turtle](https://www.gulf-insider.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Untitled-29-1024x585.jpg)
The turtle-shaped yacht is able to stay afloat thanks to over 30,000 cells placed underneath the living space.
