Video tour of Adventuress, the glorious 83ft Fife-designed 1924 schooner

Take a walk through the stunning interior of restored 83ft Fife schooner Adventuress

adventuress yacht

The lovely William Fife-design schooner Adventuress is one of the finest to emerge from the Scottish yard. Designed and built by Fife in 1924.

She was restored and relaunched in 2012 after an extensive two-year refit and return to her original rig at Rockport Marine in Maine. She was brought there by her owner after he bought the boat in 2010.

At that time, Adventuress had gone to Rockport Marine for a new deck, but when the planks came off most of the frames needed to be replaced, and then the ironwork, and bit by bit as the structure was uncovered the project spiralled until it was on such a scale it is comparable with a new build.

After all the work was finished, Adventuress sported a new rig, deck and deck frames, 60 per cent of new planking was new, almost every deck fitting had been custom made, and the interior was completely refitted. The result is spectacular, and the video shows the boat in her full glory, inside and out, shortly after relaunch.

Adventuress, classic Fife design schooner

The joinery and detail on Adventuress is lavish and beautifully executed. Many of the ideas have been taken from other Fife yachts, as relatively little of the original yacht survived.

She cruises offshore with a crew of eight, but on occasions round the race course, there can be 20 or more, and there were times when all hands are at work as they handle main and jackyard topsail, fore, fisherman, topsail, staysail, jib and jib top.

Adventuress can carry her tower of canvas, though at times, as I discovered when I raced on board at Antigua Classics, she heeled hard to sluice the leeward scupper and slid to leeward. Even when not hard pressed this is a wet boat, with such a deliciously low counter that the quarter wave regularly rides up to lap over the capping rail.

It’s a fabulous sight to be so close to the water in such a large and powerful boat, the very opposite of most high-sided modern boats. I’m told that offshore the cockpit is regularly filled. There may be faster ways of sailing but few experiences are more exhilarating than this.

Bringing Boats to Life — The Epic Launch of ADVENTURESS at Rockport Marine

May 21, 2014

Surely one of the greatest yacht restorations in recent history was the rebuild of the Fife schooner ADVENTURESS by Rockport Marine, and OCH was right there, camera in hand, to get the project down on film.  We were fortunate to work with photographer Alison Langley on this project, so the imagery is especially enticing with her still photography and additional video shots.

Just sublime! I’m sitting at my PC in Nicosia, Cyprus, where summer just won’t let go this year and it’s been as high as 35 C today. No end to the heat in sight in the next 10 days or more. What a thrill to see Adventuress under sail. A tip of the hat to all involved, and thanks again to OCH for enabling us to take some breaks from the pandemic and focus on what really counts in life.

If you love boats, how could you not get a little emotional watching that launching and sailing. I know Rockport Harbor well, I would love to be there; and have my kids there for a launching anything close to that. Time to tune in to what they are building up there this winter.

Like everyone else, here, I was just stunned by this video, the best yet, a magnificent vessel, but also an expertly crafted presentation, you guys continue to top yourselves and I begin to wonder if OFFCENTERHARBOR isn’t some sort of a critical nexus in the evolution of the boat building community, beyond, perhaps, even your own expectations. You have certainly exceeded mine…..

Ron Simpson says:

It seems a little odd to give thanks for the wealthy, but how else can we give challenging work and fair compensation to these and other outstanding craftsmen and craftswomen? Wow, what a magnificent creation! Wonderful film work as well.

Michael Miller says:

Excellent video – would have preferred more detail of the final woodwork in place. Did you use drones or manned aircraft for the sailing video? You are raising the standard! Thanks.

John Stevenson says:

Steve, and company — Great video! One of the best yet.

I watch it over and over and over again as well. Can’t get enough.

Looking forward to your post about working with Alison in the shoot. More video about that specifically, please!

Also, where did you find the Night Train music? I’ve looked all over iTunes, and they don’t have anything of the sort by Walt Wilkins. YouTube has ‘Night Train Rolling By’, but it has lyrics (that detract IMHO). Did you mix this yourself, just so you could have them softly crooning in the background without his words getting in the way?

Or, if that particular version is available somehow, I would love to purchase it!

Please let me know… thank you.

Steve Stone

Steve Stone says:

Hi John. Glad you enjoyed this one. Walt Wilkins had his studio remaster his “Night Train Rolling By” song for us for this piece specifically so it’s only available with lyrics on iTunes. If recommend checking out all his work there.

I wonder if you would allow me to link to this page on my web log, AshleyRiverBoatworks.com? I’d like to write a post entitled “Why I do What I do” and feature your video. It really does say it all. Please let me know at [email protected] .

And by the way, I’m a one person shop. Your videos really lift me whenever I watch them. The really do remind me (as we all need reminding sometimes) why I do it. Thanks for that! And keep up the great work.

Sure Tim. Here’s the short link: https://www.offcenterharbor.com/?p=15740

I saw Adventuress at Rockport Marine in 2010. I was a student at The Landing School of Boatbuilding and Design, and we were touring Rockport Marine on a field trip. I was awed by the work being done there. I felt like a kid in a candy store, but also like there was so much still to learn! Well, there’s ALWAYS so much still to learn.

It’s wonderful to see Adventuress on the open water–something I could only imagine at the time I saw her. What a wonderful boat, and what a wonderful place. This video reminds my of why I went to The Landing School in the first place, and why I do what I do now. I have my own shop, and I’m restoring old boats. at Ashley River Boatworks.

Thanks for all this wonderful feedback. I’m going to have to write up a “behind-the-scenes” post about the experience of creating this video with the OCH team and Alison Langley. In all my years filled with so many experiences, this moment in time at Rockport Marine is way up there at the top as an environment conducive to great work — a rare and remarkable combination of boat owner, yard owner, yard crew, and of course the boat herself. A special place for sure…

At the launch party, a long-time Rockport Marine customer stopped me on the dock and he said: “That video was like dressage. I mean military dressage at the highest level”. I had no idea what dressage was, but he went on to explain that there’s a moment before the ride, if you watch closely, when you can see the horse and the rider settle in to each other and the rider becomes part of the horse.

That’s very much what it felt like on this shoot. Thanks to Rockport Marine’s owner Taylor Allen, and the openness of the crew, Alison and I got to hang out long enough to sense the nature of the place and what was happening, and it all seemed to flow into the camera. Be sure to check out the other video that came from this shoot — Building Raised Panels (Joe Kobak made a huge raised panel in one day). BTW, dressage is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dressage

Fishing, diving, hiking… taking a leisurely stroll to the 19 th hole. Most of us have an outdoor pursuit that we wish we could give more time to.

Yet when vacation time rolls around, we inevitably find ourselves taken further from the activities which fuel our souls. Sure, lying on the beach is great, but what if you crave a little adventure alongside it? This is where an adventure yacht charter takes centre stage.

A crewed yacht charter offers unparalleled relaxation and luxury, perfect for those who wish to kick back and worry about nothing for a week or so. However, as well as being your floating home-from-home, your charter yacht is also the perfect means of trying all manner of outdoor activities – anywhere in the world.

After a morning dive, an afternoon fishing, or a full day of exploring coves – packing up and heading back to your accommodation is never enjoyable. When your accommodation is moored only metres away, and there is delicious fresh food awaiting you – it’s a totally different story.

A fun-packed day of exhilarating activity can certainly revive the mind, but can leave your body feeling in need of some TLC. So why not opt for a yacht with on-board hot tub, sauna and steam shower, to relieve your aching muscles? Your crew could even arrange a masseur to come aboard and work on any knots.

Needless to say, if you have even a passing interest in watersports, a crewed yacht charter offers everything you could need – and more. Your captain can expertly guide you to the next scuba spots, to check out the local wildlife. Avoid the crowds and bypass the uncomfortable transfers, weighed down with your equipment. Your private tender will zip you straight to the heart of the action in a matter of moments.

Keen divers won’t want to miss the opportunity to see the stunning, often deserted, islands of Raja Ampat in Indonesia. The diversity of vibrant sealife here is astounding. A trip to land may also tempt you, with hiking and nature walks promising incredible scenery.

Many divers will have the Great Barrier Reef on their bucket lists. Imagine waking up in your sumptuous cabin, enjoying a freshly prepared breakfast on deck, then slipping straight into the water to marvel at the wildlife.

Perhaps you’ve heard of the stunning depths of the Blue Hole in Belize. What you may not realise is that there are many other islands nearby, awaiting exploration. Many charter crews are also dive instructors or enthusiasts, so they can plot the perfect course for a dream day of diving. They will also be able to encourage and instruct those who are new to the diving world.

Charter yachts commonly come with dive equipment on board as standard, to save the rigmarole of picking up and transporting equipment. If this isn’t the case, it can easily be arranged to be ready on board for your arrival.

If your idea of the perfect day is catching some waves, consider chartering in Fiji or Costa Rica. World-renowned surfing awaits you, and there’s no need to miss any of the action. Your crew will advise on the best surf spots, and can take you straight to the biggest breaks on the tender. Your yacht will be fully decked with boards and wetsuits, if you’d prefer not to travel with your own.

Aruba and the Dominican Republic are perfect charter areas for kite-surfers. Meanwhile, paddle boarding on the warm, calm waters of the British Virgin Islands is always a dream.

Hike and Ski

Charter vacations are not just for the underwater adventurers  Some activities on terra-firma are best accessed by boat. Ice-hiking under the guidance of your crew in Antarctica, is an experience you’ll never forget. Climbing, skiing, and seeing the fjords backlit by the Northern Lights are all part of a charter in Northern Norway. What better way to warm up than fresh tea and cake from the panoramic views of the heated saloon?

If your idea of an adventure vacation is more of an expedition of discovery, we’ve got that covered too. Play explorer for a week, on a refitted research yacht. Head deep underwater on the submarine, and then examine your findings in the on-board research lab. This charter will connect you to nature on a whole different level.

yacht charter jacuzzi helipad

Follow the billfish circuit in The Bahamas or cast off in Costa Rica and Panama, with many larger yachts offering their own sportfish boat as part of the package. And what better way to visit the best Caribbean golf courses in one trip than sailing to them by yacht?

20 Best Reality TV Shows Right Now

1000-lb sisters: "you're pretty good lookin' for a girl:" tammy & amy's best striped outfits after weight loss milestones, big brother 26: week 1 nominations made by hoh (spoilers).

  • Kyle Dickard's time on Below Deck Adventure was short-lived and filled with trouble. He sparked a romance with Kasie, but his disrespectful behavior towards her and other cast members led to his firing by Captain Kerry Titheradge.
  • Kyle's behavior post-show has been eventful, including getting arrested at a soccer game in 2022.
  • He was charged with disorderly conduct and bribery after attempting to bribe the police.
  • Despite his significant presence on the show, Kyle keeps a low profile on social media and seems more interested in partying than working. Letting him go from Below Deck Adventure was the best decision.

Kyle Dickard's Below Deck Adventure experience was short-lived, but his post-show life has been quite eventful. While the release for Below Deck Adventure season 2 hasn't been revealed, Kyle will certainly not be joining. Kyle was a deckhand aboard the yacht and quickly found himself in trouble after sparking a romance with Kasie Faddah. While Kasie initially seemed to reciprocate Kyle's feelings, the deckhand started flirting with her in front of guests, and when Captain Kerry Titheradge found out, Kyle got his first strike. He continued to pursue Kasie and disrespected cast members on nights out.

Getting on Below Deck deckhand Nathan Morley 's bad side was Kyle's last straw. Kyle had no respect for his coworker, no matter how often Nathan asked him to treat him kindly. For example, Kyle seemed unable to keep their bathroom clean. He repeatedly refused to flush the toilet, even when Nathan asked him several times. While drunk, Kyle responded to Nathan, threatening to beat him up. Nathan reported him to Captain Kerry, who took the situation seriously and knew it was time to let Kyle go. Getting fired was only the beginning for troublemaker Kyle.

Reality TV is more popular than ever. With so many to choose from, here are some of the best reality TV shows to stream or watch right now.

Kyle Was Arrested

He had many charges against him.

In November 2022, Kyle proved he deserved to be fired from Below Deck Adventure . According to a TMZ article from November 2022, the former reality TV star attended a soccer game at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He appeared to have a lot of fun and was very excited to be there, as he left his seat to run across the soccer field shirtless while being chased by security guards.

Kyle made it pretty far across the fields before the security tackled him to the ground. He was charged with disorderly conduct, resisting without violation, and bribery, as he reportedly tried to bribe the police to let him off the hook . Kyle didn't post much on social media but shared the moment on his Instagram page. However, Kyle has since put his Instagram on private so the post is inaccessible.

Kyle Kept A Low Profile After Appearing On Below Deck Adventure

His instagram is on private too.

Kyle is unusually quiet in his personal life for someone who had a significant presence in Below Deck Adventure season 1 . I t's unclear when Kyle put his Instagram on private , but as of July 2024, no one can see his profile unless they follow him. When his profile was public, he rarely posted on Instagram, but according to his bio, Kyle likes to " Boot Scootin’ Boogie. " It's unclear if Kyle still works in yachting anymore , following his time on the show. As Kyle presented in the series, he seems more interested in partying and having a good time than working.

Will Kyle Ever Return To The Below Deck Franchise?

Probably not especially after his arrest.

As for whether Kyle would ever return to the Below Deck franchise, this seems highly unlikely . With Below Deck Adventure season 2 likely not coming back after Captain Kerry moved to Below Deck , replacing Captain Lee Rosbach, Kyle will never be a Below Deck Adventure yachtie again. He could return for another Below Deck series, but that's doubtful. After his run-in with the law, while Below Deck Adventure was airing, Bravo wouldn't want to work with him again . His legal troubles could cause issues for the network.

Also, Kyle probably doesn't want to return to the series. He left the show on bad terms and doesn't seem like the type of guy who is looking for a redemption arc. Kyle could possibly return to the regular Below Deck series where Captain Kerry is now and maybe prove himself. However, with Below Deck season 12 already filming , Kyle will have to wait for another season if he wants to come back to the franchise.

It's clear Kyle was not done getting in trouble after Captain Kerry fired him. The captain was respectful and compassionate, ensuring Kyle's firing wouldn't affect his future. However, Kyle took Kerry's kindness for granted and continued to cause problems. Hopefully, after his arrest, he's learned to calm down. Putting his social media on private is probably for the best, as he'd get into more trouble if he were constantly sharing his antics on his profile. Letting him go from Below Deck Adventure was the best decision.

Below Deck Adventure is available to stream on Peacock.

Rebuilding Paradise: The Bitter End Yacht Club’s Inspiring Comeback

By: Shannon Sinnard Destinations

Nestled at the northeastern tip of Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands, the Bitter End Yacht Club has long been a premier maritime destination for sailors. For years, this iconic resort has drawn seafarers from around the globe, offering a serene escape amidst the sparkling waters of the Caribbean.

While the term “bitter end” often refers to the final part of a rope or chain, the phrase can also signify reaching the farthest point or the end destination of a long or difficult journey. The founders of the Bitter End Yacht Club chose this name to reflect both its geographical location and the spirit of adventure and perseverance inherent to sailors. For those who navigate to this end-of-the-line point, the BEYC stands as a haven where their journey culminates in beauty and tranquility. And, for many, it has long stood as a cherished traditional stop when exploring the waters of the BVI.

A Legendary Past, a Devastating Blow

In more recent years, the Bitter End’s name has embodied not only a physical destination but also a symbolic one. The iconic BEYC experienced a devastating blow in September 2017 when Hurricane Irma, one of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes in history, wreaked havoc on the Caribbean, leaving the Bitter End Yacht Club in ruins. The devastation was profound, with buildings flattened, boats destroyed, and the once-thriving resort reduced to rubble.

adventuress yacht

While many Bitter End enthusiasts were devastated to hear of the destruction Hurricane Irma left in her wake, the iconic Bitter End Yacht Club kept its loyal fans updated via its website , detailing both the damage and community efforts to rebuild this beloved BVI institution.

Rising from the Ashes

Having now been rebuilt and risen from the devastation of Hurricane Irma, the Bitter End’s name resonates even more with the idea of enduring and overcoming challenges – much like the sailors who venture to the farthest reaches to get there.

After the storm, the Bitter End Yacht Club faced a long and arduous journey to recovery. But the spirit of resilience and determination among its community never wavered. Fast forward to today, and the Bitter End Yacht Club has not only been rebuilt but has been reimagined, standing as a testament to the power of recovery and the adventurous spirit that made it famous.

A New Era for the Bitter End Yacht Club

The reopening of the Bitter End Yacht Club marks a new chapter in its storied history. The rebuilt resort seamlessly blends the charm and character of its past with modern amenities and environmentally friendly practices. Here’s a glimpse of what visitors can now expect:

State-of-the-Art Marina

The heart of the Bitter End experience, the marina, has been meticulously restored and upgraded, offering deep-water slips that can accommodate yachts up to 200 feet, along with enhanced dockside services. Sailors can enjoy top-notch amenities including electrical hook-ups, fuel, ice, showers, rubbish disposal, and laundry facilities. Additionally, guests have access to the resort’s swimming pool. The BEYC also boasts one of the best deep-water anchorages in the Caribbean, providing many of the same amenities as the docking facilities.

Culinary Delights

Dining at the Bitter End is an experience in itself. The resort’s restaurants feature locally sourced ingredients, celebrating Caribbean flavors with a gourmet twist. Whether it’s a casual beachside meal or an elegant dinner under the stars, the culinary offerings are sure to delight every palate.

Adventure and Exploration

For those with a thirst for adventure, the resort offers a wide range of water sports, including sailing, kiteboarding, windsurfing, and snorkeling. Guests can explore the vibrant coral reefs, embark on a deep-sea fishing expedition, or simply enjoy a leisurely paddle around the bay.

Environmental Stewardship

The Bitter End Yacht Club has embraced sustainability as a core principle in its rebuilding efforts. The resort utilizes renewable energy sources, practices water conservation, and is committed to preserving the natural beauty of the BVI. Initiatives such as coral reef restoration and marine conservation programs are integral to its operations, ensuring that the Bitter End remains a pristine paradise for future generations.

A Bright Future

From its storied past to its recent resurgence, the Bitter End Yacht Club is more than just a return to business; it’s a celebration of resilience, community, and the indomitable spirit of the BVI. As it welcomes back old friends and new, the Bitter End promises to once again be the ultimate retreat for those who seek the thrill of the open sea and the tranquility of an island paradise in one of the most breathtaking locations on earth.

Hilton’s latest hotel brand is perfect for luxury adventure travelers.

The newest brand from Hilton has plenty to offer discerning travelers who enjoy a mix of adventure, authentic experiences and upscale accommodation. With 13 hotels and resorts already open, and many more in the pipeline, LXR from Hilton may soon be a household name.

Umana Bali, LXR Hotels & Resorts, opened in Bali last year.

For travelers, navigating the hotel brand jungle can be overwhelming. Even for members of hotel loyalty programs like Hilton Honors, IHG Rewards or Marriott Bonvoy, finding the right brand to match your travel style is not always a given.

You may be wondering what Hilton’s LXR offers that you cannot already find at a Conrad or Waldorf Astoria. Here’s what Feisal Jaffer, the global head of the LXR brand, has to say on the subject:

ROKU KYOTO, LXR Hotels & Resorts

Signature Hilton Luxury Characteristics

"The signature Hilton luxury characteristic that you will find at all LXR Hotels & Resorts is an unwavering commitment to service, standard of product, and experience," says Jaffer. "What sets LXR apart is the opportunity for our guests to stay at an independent hotel that is truly authentic to its destination, while knowing that the standard of service and experience is going to be exceptional."

Hilton created LXR in 2018 as a soft brand. In hotel speak, this refers to a brand that does not have to adhere to specific standards for decor and operations but allows the independent property owners to benefit from a global hotel company’s loyalty program and other administrative advantages.

"Hilton is a name that consumers trust, it has a history and infrastructure that has elevated hotels and brands, and has a lot to offer to independent hotels. LXR embraces the individuality of each hotel, yet gives them global distribution firepower and scale," says Jaffer.

Guests staying at LXR hotels like Oceana Santa Monica can benefit from the Hilton Honors program. ... [+]

Hilton Honors

For the consumer, this means being able to enjoy the benefits of the Hilton Honors program, without staying in a standardized hotel that might sometimes feel overly formulaic.

LXR Hotels & Resorts is a hand-picked collection of independent and spirited luxury properties in what Jaffer descibes as: "the world's most alluring destinations that celebrate the timeless pursuit of personal adventure". He adds that LXR connects legendary properties in an exclusive network of hotels and resorts set apart by individual design, an unrivaled commitment to personalized service, and elegant, yet locally immersive experiences. Additionally, each hotel has its own character that is steeped in the originality of its locale and with its own unique design.

So, what are these "alluring" destinations?

Umana Bali is LXR's first opening in Southeast Asia.

Last year, LXR launched Umana Bali , the brand’s first opening in Southeast Asia. Drawing from the Balinese Tri Hita Karana philosophy and its three pillars—Nature, People and Spirituality—it seeks to create a meaningful, yet contemporary guest experience.

"Anyone who has visited Bali can speak to the vibrancy of the culture and enchantment of the destination. Umana Bali provides an unparalleled ability to embrace a spirit of personal adventure, whatever adventure means to you," says Jaffer, adding that every LXR stay is tailored to provide guests with exclusive access to carefully curated, immersive experiences through the local team’s extensive knowledge of the destination.

At Umana Bali, these adventures may include an exhilarating helicopter ride for a bird’s-eye view of Mount Batur’s volcanic pinnacle, followed by a beachside bonfire barbecue. Guests can also take up stargazing with a resident astronomer, or kite-making with a master kite builder, not to mention the most authentic Balinese experience of all: a walk around a local village market, followed by a meal in a Balinese home hosted by the owner who is also a member of the Umana Bali team.

Susona Bodrum is set on Turkey’s exclusive southwest coast.

LXR Destinations Around The World

At Susona Bodrum , on Turkey’s idyllic and exclusive southwest coast, guests can set out on a private day excursion to Etrim Village, an ancient and untouched spot on the Halikarnassos Peninsula, to learn about Turkish carpet-making and natural dyeing and weaving techniques.

Meanwhile, at Oceana Santa Monica in California, specially curated activities include private yacht adventures, coastal horseback riding, and helicopter rides over Malibu’s spectacular coastline. Or, in Japan, at Roku Kyoto , visitors can try their hand at the centuries-old art of Washi paper-making using water sourced right from Kyoto’s Tenjin River, or discover the ancient Japanese art of Kintsugi, reviving broken pottery pieces with gold and lacquer at Master Hiroki Kiyokawa’s studio.

"The world’s most distinguished travelers look for hotels where service is intentional, personal and meets their specific needs. LXR’s unique approach to hospitality comes to life through individual interactions and the ability to understand our guests’ desires," concludes Jaffer.

LXR Hotels & Resorts currently encompasses 13 destinations spanning five continents. Within the next several years, LXR is projected to have more than 20 operating hotels.

How to Charter a Boat

If you want to sail off into the sunset, at least temporarily, you need to understand how to get aboard first.

An illustration of the bow of a boat with three women with flowing hair and cocktails looking over a man playing a guitar and then off in the water, four other vacationers are sunbathing on inner tubes.

By Lauren Sloss

This time of year, it’s an inevitable thought: Life would be that much better out on the water. Specifically, on a boat.

Even if you have neither a boat nor boating experience, it’s never been easier to make your nautical dreams come true — whether you want a day trip on your local lake or a fully staffed multiday voyage in a far-flung locale. Here are the initial questions that will help you plan an adventure on the water.

Whom are you traveling with?

Thinking about the size and dynamic of your group is an important first step, even if you are simply going on a day trip. Will children be on board? How old? What about elderly parents?

Dan Lockyer, the chief commercial officer of Dream Yacht Worldwide , strongly encourages travelers to determine group size — and, ideally, get people committed — before booking.

“The location that you want to go to, the time of year that you want to go, the type of boat that you want will entirely depend on the makeup of the group that you’re sailing with,” Mr. Lockyer said.

Do you want to captain, or do you want a captain?

Different charter companies specialize in certain locations, types of boats, itineraries and services. Some companies offer the opportunity for a “bareboat” charter, in which you rent the boat and take on the navigation and provisioning yourself, while others exclusively offer fully staffed options, including a captain and a cook.

If you want to captain the boat yourself, almost all outfits require some kind of proof of sailing or boating experience, often in line with local regulations.

Edward King, 45, an executive at a streaming company based in San Francisco, is experienced in sailing the city’s waterways. But on vacation, he said he would prefer to let a captain and crew take the lead.

Mr. King said he appreciates a captain who is familiar with both the local waters — “they’ll know how to avoid sailing into a certain sandbar,” he said, — as well as the local attractions.

In contrast, Matt Blake, 38, a software engineer based in Oakland, Calif., was eager to grow his sailing experience during a recent trip to La Paz, Mexico, with his fiancée. He hired a captain but made clear that the captain was there to help and teach.

Where do you want to go?

“Do you want something that’s more culturally oriented? Nature oriented? An adventure trip?” asked Mary Curry, the voyage product director of Adventure Life , which offers small group tours and private trips on land and on water around the world.

That answer can determine your destination. Popular cruising grounds include the Caribbean, Croatia, Alaska and French Polynesia, but the sky — or the sea — is really the limit. For help narrowing your focus, travel advisers often have relationships with charter companies or outfits around the world, and sailing publications offer recommendations.

Kyla Malkani, who has had experience with charters working as a destination wedding planner, recommends consulting the concierge of waterfront hotels, particularly for short-term or day rentals.

“A lot of times they will have either their own fleet or they will have some sort of connection at a dock,” said Ms. Malkani, 37, who is based in Washington, D.C., and is currently working as a content creator and freelance event planner.

What kind of boat?

Where you want to travel and for how long will likely determine the kinds of boats that are available to you. Crucial at this point, too, is an understanding of the boat’s layout and amenities.

“You definitely want to choose the right kind of boat,” said Ms. Malkani. “If you want more adventure, a sailboat is nice. If you’re looking for a luxury party environment, a yacht is best. And if you’re looking for something smooth, for older people or with kids, a catamaran is great.”

David Barclay is a luxury travel adviser who has also chartered boats for his own vacations.

“You want to match what the travelers want to what the boat offers,” he said.

Perhaps a group of friends might not mind a catamaran with functional but not luxurious marine bathrooms, but a multigenerational group might prefer more high-touch amenities.

When should I book?

Often, charter trips are once-in-a-lifetime experiences that require a great deal of advanced planning.

“You may have a specific place you want to go, or a specific time of year you want to travel,” said Mr. Barclay. “And some places just aren’t good at certain times of year.”

Naturally, you don’t want to be at sea in the Caribbean during hurricane season, or in the Mediterranean during winter storms. But you also might want to avoid peak cruising seasons, too.

The first three weeks of August are quite popular, said Mr. Lockyer. “If you have some flexibility and can travel in early July, you’ll get the same sort of great weather, a greater selection of boats and the anchorages won’t be as crowded.”

How much does it cost?

Charter costs are incredibly variable, dependent on all of the factors coming into play: your boat type and size, your destination, your group size, the amount of crew you’d like and the amenities on board. That said, costs could range anywhere from $2,000 for a day on a sailboat to hundreds of thousands of dollars for a multiday mega-yacht charter. Have a budget in mind when beginning your research process.

What if I didn’t plan far in advance?

While advanced planning is encouraged, and often necessary for bigger boat trips, it’s possible to book a boat last-minute.

Boatsetter , an Airbnb-like platform for boats, is a good resource for last-minute bookings, especially for day trips, and even has an Instant Book option for down-to-the-wire bookings.

“If it’s for a special event, or around major holidays, you may want to book a month or two in advance. But for general bookings, you can find options within a week or two,” said Kim Koditek, Boatsetter’s head of brand strategy and communications, of the company’s overnight offerings, which appear on their platform under the luxury yacht charters category .

Ms. Malkani has used Boatsetter for some of her charters, most of which have been booked with a specific goal in mind.

“I’m a sunset chaser,” she said. “My husband and I just really love being on the water, and we always try to squeeze in some sort of boat day activity when we’re traveling.”
