ACALA’s OWNER ON HIS BEAUTIFUL EXPLORER YACHT
Owner - m/y acala.
My family and I love exploring uncontaminated areas out of the reach of conventional yachts this is the reason why we bought our first explorer yacht built by Cantiere delle Marche: the first Acala, a Darwin 102, was launched in 2015 and since then we sailed the world and lived unforgettable experiences, sailing to archipelagos lost in the expanses of both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and diving in the most beautiful spots in the world. The first Acala, a 31-metre explorer yacht, took us safely to remote places, yet we needed a larger yacht for more comfort and mostly to have it built with all characteristic and features we knew we needed. A custom explorer yacht, indeed.
Our experience with Cantiere delle Marche had been great so I wanted to have my new explorer yacht to be built by them. With Argentinian/Italian designer (and naval architect) Horacio Bozzo we defined the total length, style, exterior features and an interior layout that matched the way we live on board. We were on the same page and Horacio gave shape to my requests. I think that Acala is a remarkable piece of design.
What to say about Cantiere delle Marche? The shipyard has outdone itself. We worked with them on the technical aspects for almost a year and this allowed the construction process to be smooth and totally under control. The quality of her construction is impeccable. Acala was delivered in mid-March and since then we almost never left the yacht. We have enjoyed cruising in the Med from Croatia to Greece, the Balearic Island, South of France and we have great plans for the months to come.
For the interior design and decoration we entrusted, Mexican designer Simon Hamui . We know Simon from a long time and what we have is more than just a working relationship. Our new explorer yacht has been designed to allow us to sail far and wide for long periods of time and to reach remote areas of the world (as we did with our previous, smaller CDM yacht). We travel as a family and we frequently share our ‘adventures’ with some close friends of ours so Acala had to be roomy and comfortable for us, our guests and crew. We wanted her to be beautiful too, both outside and inside.
Simon perfectly understood the mood and the style I was looking for and we shared ideas and thoughts on almost all aspects of the interior and exterior decoration. Beauty and functionality go hand in hand on Acala. The style Simon Hamui created is aesthetically pleasant and logically coherent with the exterior look of the yacht and with our way of living on board. We wanted welcoming, warm interior spaces and well-appointed exterior areas for outdoor living.
We don’t need to show off. What is on board Acala is what we like and what makes us feel at ease. Consistency and homogeneity of the interior decoration was one of our requests and the result is what we wanted: the internal environments highlight a neatness and formal rigour perfectly combined with comfort while the choice of subtle colours create a relaxing atmosphere.
After having spent months on board Acala, I can witness that together with Simon we did the right choices!

43m full-custom explorer yacht Acala launched at Cantiere delle Marche
- Annarita Mariani
- January 28, 2022
Cantiere delle Marche announces the launch of Acala, a 43m explorer superyacht commissioned by a repeat client of the Italian shipyard who had previously owned a Darwin 102, with which he has sailed extensively in the Pacific and Atlantic.
Acala: design
Acala is an explorer yacht reflecting the tradition of Cantiere delle Marche. The new addition marks the first collaboration with the Argentinean Varazze-based designer and naval architect Horacio Bozzo who handled the eye-catching exterior design. But Acala has also reconfirmed the presence of Sergio Cutolo – Hydro Tec, at the helm of the naval architecture design of the Italian shipyard. The luxury and relaxing interior design, instead, is by Mexican architect Simon Hamui. This multidisciplinary approach allowed for a total level of customization.
“ The aim of our design work is the pleasure of seeing the owner’s desires taking shape and recognizing himself in it ”- says Horacio Bozzo – Designing an explorer for an experienced owner who grew up around boats and understands yachting perfectly, is very gratifying, We started from a white piece of paper and brainstormed a lot with him to fulfil the whole family needs.”
Three decks and a sundeck: these are the areas dedicated to the cabins, which can sleep a total of 12 guests across six cabins. Owners and their families will be able to enjoy the full-beam main deck from amidships to the bow. The large, comfortable VIP cabins are located on the starboard side and enjoy natural light and a view of the sea, in keeping with the nautical design trend that is moving in the direction of ever greater contact with nature.
The Main Deck, where three VIPs and the master cabin are located, is characterized by large windows whose uprights do not join the superstructure, thus providing great light and a breathtaking view of the sea. The two twin cabins are located on the lower deck. On the Main Deck there is also a panoramic salon, of limited dimensions, which has the peculiarity of opening onto a very large cockpit, equipped for moments of conviviality and dining, where there is also a swimming pool and large spaces dedicated to relaxation and sunbathing.
The Upper Deck houses a large panoramic skylounge, perfect for both conversation and dining for more formal occasions. The Sun Deck is partially shaded by the hard top and hosts a second swimming pool, a dining area and a living room. Particularly functional is the choice of a dumbwaiter that connects all the decks. From the Lower Deck, where the galley is located, the dumbwaiter goes up to the Upper Deck, facilitating the work of the crew and giving guests and owners more privacy. The crew has five cabins, a dinette adjacent to the spacious galley and other rooms. The captain has a cabin on the Upper Deck next to the helm station.
MY Acala: Performance
Featuring a steel hull, aluminium superstructure, 62,400l fuel tanks and powered by two efficient Caterpillar C32 Acert 746 kW engines, Acala has a range of over 5,000 nautical miles at a speed of 10 knots, and a top speed of 14 knots.
In other words, she has all the credentials of an explorer yacht that wants to reach the most remote and unspoilt areas of the oceans without haste
Cantiere delle Marche and custom production
“ The strategy to dedicate one slot per year to fully custom projects proved to be successful and extremely important for the technical growth of the shipyard – says CDM CEO Ennio Cecchini – Building these one-off vessels is a great opportunity for our team to learn something new and to work out of its comfort zone”. Acala’s imposing and elegant lines reveal harmonious and balanced geometries, providing generous and extremely luxurious spaces. But Acala is also expression of a refined luxury and perhaps for this very reason wonderfully intangible, resolving itself in the impalpable sensation of living without the oppression of time.

Superyacht 76 – Winter 2022-2023
Closer and closer to adventure yachts, explorers are also growing in size. Cantiere delle Marcher, unquestioned leader in the field, has now exceeded the 40-metre limit still keeping below the other crucial threshold, 500GRT. The yard unveiled Acala at the latest Yacht Show in Munich, a perfect mixture of power, sophisticated elegance and oceanic range. Truly an oceanic yacht, Acala was designed by Horacio Bozzo and and Mexican architect Simon Hamui. Her naval architecture was penned by Sergio Cutolo/Hydrotech.
Acala was simply showing off at the latest Yacht Show in Munich. She is a full custom explorer yacht, whose expert owner has had, over the years, yachts built by outstanding yards like Feadship, Lurssen, Blohm + Voss. His previously owned Darwin 102, also built by Cantiere delle Marche, was his chance to sail across the oceans, Atlantic as well as Pacific, and reach unspoilt beauty spots. And her positives were so impressive, both for comfort and safety, that the owner decided to have a larger yacht built by the same yard. In this latter case, however, he specifically asked the CDM for a full custom Explorer, entirely modelled on his requests. Both externally and internally.
“This ship was an important step for the yard – says CEO Vasco Buonpensiere. We are so proud of this owner appreciating us, it shows and confirms how earnestness and competence always give good results. It is our job, we are keen on this. Mutual trust was essential for this complex project to turn out at its best. It took us nearly one year to simply define technical specifications. And the result of this effort was twofold: the 43-metre’s perfectly defined features, and a smooth construction process that basically never stopped until launching. This even allows us to joke, we often tell each other we have built the smallest 80-metre ever!”
Acala kicks off a cooperation with Horacio Bozzo Design, who penned the yacht’s sober and elegant lines. “Our purpose was to completely fulfill the owner’s wishes, which his previous experience had made so clear and neat-says Horacio. Working for such a demanding person was much of a challenge for us; pleasing him, our greatest pleasure. It all started off as a blank sheet, we ended up shaping a perfect yacht for the owner and his family”.
Her imposing yet elegant profile combines perfectly arranged volumes with no excesses, by matching the hull’s half wide body mass with a light superstructure dominated by wide full-height windows. The moderately soaring prow perfectly embodies the Explorer’s spirit, with reasonably large and regularly set windows to lighten the mass of the hull. Their sober design never disturbs the observer, while they perfectly carry out their task to light up the interior.
The whole thing provides timeless elegance, one that won’t be touched by fashion’s changing course. The main deck large windows, whose frames do not merge with the superstructure, certainly stand out as an impressive stylistic element; so does the deck-marking line on the upper bridge, which clearly separates hull and superstructure to furtherly lighten the side visual perception.
Every single shape and line flows into a harmonious geometry and creates generous volumes inside, both for guests and crew. As per owner’s request, who is planning to resume and increase his sailing to remote destinations. Acala’s six-cabin internal layout is unquestionably unique, and stems, again, from the owner’s needs. Four of these are on the main deck, including the large starboard owner’s suite: oil-finished aged eucalyptus, leather upholstery and smooth quartzite support surface contribute to its luxury ambience, Crystal quartzite was chosen for basin and shower box.
Three vip cabins host the owner’s family, the remaining two are actually found on the lower deck. All guest cabins are decorated with oil-finished grey ash and sucupira, tropical wood, leather upholstery, smooth Cielo quartzite and beige Vermont marble. The main deck living room is relatively small, yet it opens up on the huge cockpit you expect of an Explorer: the latter includes lunch and conversation area, a pool and large open space to lie in the sun.
The upper deck is home to a large panoramic skylounge, also featuring a chatting area with its L-shaped couch and a formal dining room for twelve people, ending up in an oval chatting area outlined by two semi-circular couches. Partially shaded by the hard top, the Sun deck is home to an open-air dining area, living areas around, a café and an additional swimming pool with sunbathing area.
For a quicker service, a dumbwaiter vertically connects the three decks with the kitchen on the lower one. Horacio skillfully designed the hard top on the sun deck as a sole structure, integrating the mast and supported by two flanks whose sweet and curved lines vaguely recall a funnel profile. The good old times…
Acala’s interiors are Mexican architect Simon Hamui’s job, the owner’s trusted designer. He was able to spread finest luxury all around, pure elegance which never turns heavy or flashy. Precious materials were simply and naturally laid around, so as to make you feel perfectly at ease in any attire: denim and shirt, as well as tie and suit.
Acala also benefits from the renowned Cutolo-penned naval architecture. His studio HydroTec was also in charge of the Darwin Class, RJ, Flexplorers, Nauta drafted Nauta Air, as well as several one off Cantiere delle Marche has built over the years. The project provides unique seakeeping along with flawless comfort and oceanic range. Like all other CDM built yachts, Akala is made of a steel hull and alluminium superstructure.
She 43,10 metres long, 8,60 wide, her gross tonnage does not exceed 499gt; thanks to clean hull lines, her 62.400-litre fuel tanks and low fuel consumption of her two 746kw/1000hp Caterpillar C32 engines, she boasts a 5000nm range at 10 knots. For those who like figures, maximum speed is 14 knots and cruising speed 12 knots. But she takes you farther at 10…
The engine room, CDM’s feather on the cap, is unparalleled for spaciousness and functionality. All machines and equipment are easily accessed for ordinary and extra-ordinary maintenance. As an Explorer Yacht, Acala needs a perfect engine room and superfluous equipment for her autonomy: not always do emergencies occur where assistance can be obtained, and the crew should always be allowed to fix as many failures as possible. A large storage room accommodates water toys and all necessary equipment for underwater exploration, the owner’s favourite sport.
The tender is on the upper deck, prow, as it normally happens with lifeboats. It has its own crane for handling. The crew and service areas are surprisingly wide, spacious, functional and perfectly equipped, as required by the owner. The crew can count on five cabins and a very comfortable dinette, bordering the kitchen and other service rooms. The Captain, as for him, has his own room on the upper deck next to the bridge.
“The decision to dedicate one slot yearly to fully custom yachts has turned out winning, as it contributes to the yard’s development and growth-says CDM President Cecchini. Building this kind of yachts is a great opportunity for our team to grow as it forces us to leave our “comfort zone”. Being chosen for the second time by such an expert owner, whose yachts were built by the highest-end European yards, proves that our competence and quality are second to none”. Cantiere delle Marche Launches the One-off 43 Project B2 Explorer Yacht
Barely a week after celebrating the launch of Darwin 86 Alexa, Cantiere delle Marche has announced another success. This time, the boatbuilder has successfully launched the one-off 43 Project B2.
Although Project B2 is fully customised, she still contains all the features and characteristics you would expect from a purebred explorer yacht.
Francesco Paszkowski was responsible for her exterior lines, and with the help of his team, he has produced an elegant, hugely capable boat that will win over all who see her.
Vasco Buonpensiere, the co-founder and CEO of Cantiere delle Marche (CdM), said , “Our intense activity, on all fronts, is under everybody’s eye. At CdM , we are unwaveringly dedicated to delivering the highest quality and exceptional service to our clients. Our clientele consists of some of the most experienced and well-informed individuals in the yachting community, and we strive to exceed their expectations.”
“This one-off project is perfectly aligned with CdM’s approach to explorer yachting. It seamlessly integrates and interprets in an original form the finest elements from CdM’s ranges of semi-custom explorer yachts, Darwin Class, Flexplorer, RJ, and Deep Blue. This project leverages our extensive expertise and the invaluable insights of the Owners, a beautiful family who entrusted us to bring their vision of a new explorer yacht to life, tailored precisely to their specifications.”
Paszkowski Design has paid particular attention to the exterior deck area, which allows guests to relax in a number of outdoor spots with maximum privacy, creating a feeling of openness and uninterrupted spaces. Their work on the boat’s interiors exudes refined elegance, combining sophistication with an inviting yet unpretentious atmosphere.
Thanks to a wide body configuration from midship forward, the main deck sports four large suites, almost identical in size. Two more guest cabins are located on the Lower deck amidship. Eight crew members benefit from large, well-appointed quarters on the Lower deck forward. The Captain’s cabin is located on the Upper deck next to the wheelhouse.
Tenders and jet skis are stored on the Upper deck forward, while a chase boat is available for the Owners’ and guests’ use for coastal exploration and comfortable transfers from the yacht to the shore and vice versa.
To further enhance guests’ comfort, a large beach club with sauna and hammam is located at the far end of the Lower deck, next to a large swim platform, where a day toilet is located.
With a robust and overengineered displacement steel hull and light aluminium superstructure, Project B2 has a displacement of around 440t. Hydro Tec designed her naval architecture, which ensures excellent seakeeping and frugal fuel consumption.
Twin Caterpillar C32 Acert delivering 746kW each and 60000-litre fuel tanks allow a top speed of 14 knots and a range above 5000nm at 10 knots; this means she can sail far and wide without needing regular refuelling.

The Darwin 86 is a beautiful and muscular horse, bred for its intelligence and willingness to work. The same goes for Cantiere delle Marche’s Darwin series, a range of sturdy explorer-style vessels “bred”—or rather, developed—for their long-range and seakeeping abilities.
CdM hired naval architect Sergio Cutolo of Hydro Tec to design and engineer a range of yachts for owners seeking to fulfill their dream of a safe adventure at sea. The hull boasts a high bow and low fuel consumption yielding a range of up to 7,000 nm at 8.5 knots.
Within the Darwin’s oceangoing package are the kind of refinements you’d expect to find aboard a luxury yacht, including a refined décor and high-end equipment.
