Years later Dan Ackroyd would rip this cartoon off wholesale with his feature film Ghostbusters and cover his tracks by adding a scene where a ghost sucks his dick.

This just perfectly encapsulates every aspect of my personality so well. Like if I was a piece of art, I would be this exact short. There’s literally ghosts THAT SURF! I have no choice but to put it in the favorites list

Review by Branson Reese

I watched this maybe hundreds of times as a kid as part of a spooky Disney cartoons VHS. Today was my first time watching it with an audience and my first time realizing how grotesque it is. Those ghosts sound like they're calling in from a tin can in a castle hallway. The house is sticky and musty and falling apart. You can smell the mildew from the 30s right up there on the screen. But damn, nobody plays to the cheap seats quite like Goofy.

How to out-ghost a ghost is also an apt title. Or watch Goofy almost kill himself thinking he's a ghost.

A fun old Mickey and gang cartoon, with surprisingly cool ghost designs. A fun translucent blue color, surrounded by an ethereal purple really makes them fun to look at. Just an easy going fun time watching this short.

Amazing short film.

This came out a year before Wizard of Oz and a year after Snow White.

This is like right when film really started to use the medium to its absolute finest.

This is the best example of that.

This is like the OG Ghostbusters but with Goofy, Mickey and Donald.

Can you go wrong with that? You can't.

This animation > most animation currently on television

Just the designs, colors, sound, storytelling, characters. All of it is beautiful- Disney just knows how to make the best cartoons around before anyone else could.

Short #11 of my 100 Day Disney Marathon letterboxd.com/martinjacob49/list/disney-shorts-ill-watch-during-my-100-day/

The short that most likely inspired the movie Ghostbusters, even going as far as Goofy saying the line "I ain't scared of no ghosts", Lonesome Ghosts stars Mickey, Donald, and Goofy as ghost exterminators who are called to take down ghosts at a haunted house. The rest is one slapstick sequence after another, and it's a ton of fun.

The three classic characters each have a moment to shine as they struggle to catch the ghosts, and each situation they get into is hilarious. My favorite is Goofy confused over his image in the mirror.

This is yet another fun classic Disney short. Always fun to see Mickey, Donald, and Goofy…

“Gooseflesh 9000” would be an amazing Letterboxd name.

Background [ ]

The Lonesome Ghosts are quite mischievous of playing tricks or scaring trespassers. They reside in an old manor, where they evidently receive few visitors, resulting in boring and lonely nights for the ghosts (hence their name). Their names are: Jasper, Grubb, Boo and Moss.

Appearances [ ]

Lonesome ghosts [ ].

One night during the winter, the ghosts were alone in their mansion (called the "Old McShiver mansion") complaining about the fact that there's absolutely no one left to scare. Soon enough one ghost finds an advertisement in the paper about a ghost-hunting company called the Ghost Exterminators. They call with the shortest ghost disguising his voice, claiming their home is being haunted. The exterminators Mickey, Donald and Goofy head to the mansion, but are locked in and tricked, scared, and teased by the ghosts; Mickey chases a ghost upstairs but is locked in a room which becomes flooded with water, Donald is smacked with a wooden board and spat in the face by a ghost, and Goofy gets stuck inside a dresser and accidentally pricks himself with a pin. Eventually, the trio accidentally crash into barrels of flour and molasses, giving them the appearance of ghosts. The Lonesome Ghosts, absolutely horrified, are scared off and they escape the mansion and run outside.

Bonkers [ ]

One of The Lonesome Ghosts appear as the antagonist in the episode " When the Spirit Moves You ", where Bonkers and Miranda try to catch him.

House of Mouse [ ]

Lonesome Ghosts-House of Villains02

The Lonesome Ghosts in House of Mouse .

They make very few cameos in the series and joined the other villains during the hostile take over in Mickey's House of Villains . Their debut short was also featured in the film. They also appeared in the episode House Ghosts by scaring  Pete  and pulling his underwear.

The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse [ ]

The-wonderful-world-of-mickey-mouse-houseghosts-lonesomeghost

The Lonesome Ghosts in The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse .

The ghosts appeared in Houseghosts , where they took advantage of Mickey's kindness and moved into his house after theirs was demolished as a punishment for bothering the townspeople and Mickey wanted to help. It also turns out that they have fear of sweetness, which also helped Mickey get the ghosts to leave.

Video games [ ]

Mickey mania [ ].

The ghouls are featured as minor enemies in the video game at their mansion.

The Great Circus Mystery starring Mickey and Minnie [ ]

The ghosts (as in this game they are referred to as "the Ghosts") are minor characters in the game in which they seek Mickey and/or Minnie to have them stop Baron Pete since he kicked the ghosts out of their home in the 3rd level. They also appear at the end of the game to congratulate the player on defeating Pete and they join Mickey and the gang at the circus after Pete was defeated.

Epic Mickey [ ]

Since the Mad Doctor arrived in Lonesome Manor and the Pipe Organ went out of order, the Lonesome Ghosts settled into Bog Easy in the half-sunken Mark Twain Steamboat in the bayou on the outskirts. Mickey can choose to either help them with pranking the locals or helping the locals overcome their fears of the ghosts. If Mickey fixes the Pipe Organ while visiting Lonesome Manor , the ghosts will return home and give Mickey one of the missing pieces of Animatronic Donald as a reward.

Disney Parks [ ]

In Disneyland version of Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway , the ghosts occasionally appear in the mirror of the dresser (from their debut short) at the Mickey Through the Ears museum and can even interact with the propeller on the plane from Plane Crazy with a fireplace bellow.

  • The inclusion of the Lonesome Ghosts in the Epic Mickey series and their connection to Lonesome Manor was inspired by early drafts of The Haunted Mansion featuring the Lonesome Ghosts in some capacity, with a "Lonesome Ghost" being proposed as a potential host for the attraction.
  • Ian: He acts as the "self-appointed caretaker of Blot Alley and the Spatters" (described by Gremlin Gus) in Epic Mickey 2 .
  • Screeching Sam
  • In Disney Tsum Tsum , the Lonesome Ghosts appear as a non-playable Tsum and could be fought as a boss during the Mickey's Anniversary Film Collection event. They are represented by one single Tsum, and, unlike other boss Tsums that sometimes move around the screen, this Tsum disappears and reappears on a different location of the screen.

No Batteries Required: Remembering the Fisher Price Movie Viewer (1973)

1978 Fisher-Price Movie Viewer and Cartridges 2 1/4 page advertisements.

In 1973, Fisher Price introduced its popular “ Movie Viewer and Cartridge ” toy: a camera-like device that — when operated by crank — could show Super 8 mm films.

This was the Fisher Price Movie Viewer, and as the commercials promised, children could crank the device in slow-motion, speed it up, or even run the film backwards.  Best of all, the device needed no batteries.

The Fisher Price Movie Viewer was sold with one cartridge, originally: a 1937 Walt Disney short called Lonesome Ghosts (seen below):

Very quickly, however, Fisher Price developed a wide catalog of films for kids to purchase watch, including several animated Disney movies.

Available on cartridge were Snow White (1937), Robin Hood (1973), Pinocchio (1940), and The Rescuers (1977).  There were also several Looney Tunes cartridges, one each for Bugs Bunny, the Road Runner, and Sylvester and Tweety.

Other cartridges sold by Fisher Prince included the Pink Panther, three Marvel Spider-Man titles, and in 1979, Disney’s big-budget space epic: The Black Hole.

flashbakmovieviewer2

Fisher Price wasn’t the only company that got in the game with a kid’s movie viewer. Kenner launched its own model of the toy so that kids could watch titles including Star Wars (1977) and Alien ( 1979).

flashbakmovieviewer3

Today, it’s nearly impossible to imagine a time when a kid who wanted to watch a movie just couldn’t merely do so on VHS, DVD, or via streaming. But in the 1970s, Fisher Price’s Movie Viewer was a great way — in the prehistoric era before the Age of Home Entertainment — to revisit favorite movies and characters.

And it one-upped the GAF Viewmaster toy because it used film reels, not slides.

Update :  Reader Laura Cousins writes: “Hello, Just to say that I read this article of yours about Movie Viewer in the 1970s, which I loved. I remember these from my parents years. Just one thing to ask, near the end, you mentioned that this was the pre-Home Entertainment era. But weren’t movies released on Super 8 for Home Media? Kind regards, Laura. Any readers know more?

Lonesome Ghosts

  • View history

The Lonesome Ghosts are the titular main antagonists in the 1937 Disney animated short of the same name, and three of the supporting antagonists in Mickey's House of Villains . They are a quartet of translucent green phantoms named Jasper, Grubb, Boo, and Moss who like to play tricks on anybody who enters their house.

The ghosts were voiced by the late Billy Bletcher , who also voiced Peg Leg Pete (1933-1960), The Headless Horseman in The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad , The Prosecutor Demon Cat in Pluto's Judgement Day , Zeke Midas Wolf (1933-1941), The Mad Doctor in 1933's The Mad Doctor , Butch Dog (1950), Papa Bear (1948-1951), Maleficent's Goons in Sleeping Beauty , Lawyer Goodwill in The Case of the Stuttering Pig , H. U. Hennessy in Duck Pimples , Captain Katt in The Three Blind Mousketeers , The Crusher in Rabbit Crush , and Don Del Oro in Zorro's Fighting Legion ; Jack Bergman, Harry Stanton, and John Brodie.

History [ ]

The Lonesome Ghosts are seen first being bored because they have no one to scare people with and cannot remember the last time a living person visited the house the ghosts have been haunting.

So these ghosts tricked Mickey, Donald, and Goofy who are ghost exterminators, into calling them to their haunted house. When the trio entered the ghost's house, the Lonesome Ghosts started to play a series of inventive yet annoying tricks on them. To make matters worse, Mickey, Goofy and Donald decide to separate to hunt the ghosts individually - an unwise decision that made themselves even more vulnerable to Ghosts' pranks.

Throughout the cartoon, the exterminator trios are toyed with by the ghosts at every turn until Mickey, Donald and Goofy fell into some flour and molasses under the basement of the house, giving them a disguise as creepier ghosts. Then they managed to scare the Lonesome Ghosts away from their house and ran off into the distance.

While uncertain how, the ghost hunters believe their superior tactics won the night. Donald smugly assumes the ghosts fled in capitulation to the trio. Donald then defiantly calls out, "So ya can't take it, ya big sissies?" Amen to that.

Other appearances [ ]

They make very few cameos in the series House of Mouse . In the episode "House Ghosts", they begin to scare the daylights out of Pete  and pull down his underwear making him naked.

In Mickey's House of Villains , they proceed to help the villains take over scaring everyone away gathering the heroes and corralling them into the kitchen along with the Card Soldiers . They are seen watching the final battle between Mickey and Jafar . After Jafar is defeated, they flee with the other villains.

They appear in series The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse . In the episode "Houseghosts", they take advantage of Mickey's niceness and moved into his house after theirs was bulldozed because they spooked the entire neighborhood. Here, they are voiced by Jeff Ross .

In the 1994 video game Mickey Mania , they appear as minor villains.

In the 1994 video game The Great Circus Mystery Starring Mickey and Minnie , they are kicked out of their home by Baron Pete and seek the help of Mickey and/or Minnie to stop him. After Pete is defeated, they join Mickey at the circus.

In Epic Mickey , the Mad Doctor arrived in Lonesome Manor and the Pipe Organ went out of order. This sent the ghosts to the Bog Easy to live. If Mickey fixes the Pipe Organ, the ghosts return to Lonesome Manor and give Mickey a piece of Animatronic Donald as a reward.

The Lonesome Ghosts appear as a boss in Disney Tsum Tsum .

Have a Laugh! changes [ ]

The following scenes were deleted from the short release due to time constraints:

  • The opening scenes of the ghosts complaining about how bored they are; it opens with the ghosts looking over the ad in the phone book.
  • The ghosts going over to dial the phone.
  • Mickey's group asleep in the office.
  • Mickey's group all exclaiming, "A customer!" when Mickey hangs up.
  • The ghosts watching the exterminators arrive at their door, then disappearing.
  • The ghost stalking Mickey sticking his fingers in the latter's shotgun so that it explodes and is destroyed; it cuts sloppily from Mickey aiming his gun at the ghost to the gun already destroyed by the ghost.
  • Mickey opens a closet door the ghosts are hiding in and is flooded with spectral water that the ghosts use to surf on, with one riding in a motorboat on it.
  • The entire second half of Donald's scene with the ghosts, including the numerous scenes of one ghost striking Donald on the rear with a wooden plank and Donald getting into a fight with this ghost and managing to punch the ghost so that it falls backwards and land an invisible pool of icy water.
  • Goofy saying, "I ain't a-scared of no ghosts."
  • The entire teasing scene with the ghost in the mirror.
  • The scene with Goofy's alleged struggle with the ghost in the chest of drawers, including Goofy inadvertently strangling himself and then poking himself in the rear with a pin.
  • While this short is often compared to the Columbia Pictures Ghostbusters , it also heavily resembles the Filmation Ghostbusters. The comedic tone of the short, and the ghost exterminators using melee weapons to fight ghosts, are both reminiscent of the 1975 live action show. Owing to the more popular 1986 animated show are the fact that the ambulance the extermination team drive resembles the  Ghost Buggy , while the headquarters of the exterminators resembles  Ghost Command . Owing to both shows is the concept of anthropomorphic animals fighting ghosts (both shows had an anthropomorphic gorilla, while this short has an anthropomorphic mouse, duck and dog).
