Note that Istion's charter base in Volos is also a good spot to start your charter if the Gulf is where you want to spend most of your time. Further west, the beautiful green islands of the Sporades including Skopelos, Alonissos and Skyros then beckon you to pay them a visit. Sheltered and unspoiled anchorages along the way, coupled with sandy white beaches, are a common feature of all these islands.

The area is well known for the Alonissos National Marine Park. Dolphins, sea turtles and the endangered Monachus-Monachus or Mediterranean Seal lives there. If you are lucky you may encounter some of these most beautiful and friendliest of marine creatures on your trip!

Sailing Qualifications

To skipper a bareboat charter or flotilla yacht, you need to hold a practical sailing certificate equivalent to RYA Day Skipper Practical qualification or RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC) . For charters in Greece, you must now have the ICC certificate . You must also be assisted by at least one competent crew member over the age of 18.

The port authorities in Greece are now insisting on one of the following practical certificates: RYA ICC (International Certificate of Competence), RYA Coastal, RYA Yachtmaster, ASA IPC (International Proficiency Certificate) or the IYT (International Yacht Training) Passport. If you hold an RYA Day Skipper or ASA104 it will no longer be accepted and you need to obtain either an ICC or IPC from the corresponding issuing body (RYA or ASA). If your RYA Coastal/Yachtmaster or ASA105/106 certificate is more than 12 years old and does not have a photo ID, then we would also strongly advise applying for an ICC or IPC. If you are a member of the RYA or ASA, you may qualify for a discount or free certificate, otherwise, you will have to pay. The approximate cost is £50. Please use this link - RYA application for the ICC or ASA application for the IPC.

For charters in Croatia, Malta and the Canaries , at least one member of the crew or the skipper will also need a VHF licence .

RYA qualifications can be obtained by RYA sailing schools in the UK or alternatively choose from one of our overseas centres in Gibraltar, Greece or Turkey .

For  Seychelles,  the local authorities require an ICC for the skipper of a bareboat or flotilla yacht charter.

For Caribbean and Tropical charters, formal qualifications are not compulsory, however, you should be Day Skipper standard and be assisted by at least one competent crew . A brief sailing resume should be provided to outline your experience.

For Thailand A Day Skipper qualification is required as a minimum and you must have at least 3 weeks of skippering experience prior to your charter. A VHF qualification is compulsory.

If you don't hold the relevant qualifications then why not add a skipper ?

Yacht Charter & Sailing Holidays in the Sporades (Skopelos & Skiathos)

Enjoy fresh breezes, unspoilt harbours and fine sandy beaches on a yacht charter from Skiathos or Skopelos exploring the beautiful Sporades islands.

The Sporades islands of Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos, together with the more sheltered Gulf of Volos, offer excellent sailing among very pretty islands. This attractive sailing holiday destination will suit sailors who relish the challenge of fresh sailing winds and the charm of exploring quieter islands and harbours off the beaten track.

A sailing holiday is the perfect way to explore this beautiful group of islands, completely unspoilt by tourism. Start your bareboat yacht charter in Skiathos harbour, just 5 minutes from the airport. The town has a maze of cobbled streets divided by the Bourtzi, once a Venetian fortress, now a cultural centre with great views. There’s a lively nightlife with shops, bars and restaurants around the harbour.

As you sail westwards from Skiathos to the islands of Skopelos and Alonissos or eastwards into the Gulf of Volos the pace of life becomes quieter and more tranquil. You’ll discover picturesque fishing harbours, deserted anchorages and lovely sandy beaches. There is a limited number of charter yachts in this area so you’ll find the harbours uncrowded.

Getting There

Flights to skiathos.

easyJet and Jet2 operate direct flights to Skiathos from London Gatwick and Stansted on Saturdays for the majority of bareboat charters. TUI and Jet2 also have direct flights to Skiathos from London Gatwick, Birmingham, Manchester and Nottingham (East Midlands) on Fridays and Sundays but as most bareboat charters run Saturday-Saturday you can choose to spend some time on land either side of your charter. British Airways also have direct flights to Skiathos from London City on Fridays during the high season.

Travel to Volos

There is no direct service to Volos from the UK so the nearest airport is Thessaloniki which has regular direct flights with easyJet , Ryanair and Jet2 .

The transfer time from Skiathos airport to the harbour is only 5 minutes so it usually works out better to simply jump in a taxi when you arrive. The transfer time from Thessaloniki Airport to Volos harbour is 2.5 hours. You can also fly to Athens but the transfer time is 3.5-4 hours.

Volos Sailing Journal by Helen, Nautilus Yachting

We have just landed in what appears to be the middle of a military base. Looking out of the airplane window we see a lot of decommissioned helicopters and jets. We are in Volos airport and it feels a little like landing in Greece 20 years ago, yet Volos is the 6th biggest city in modern-day Greece.

Our taxi transfer takes us on service roads before joining the main road and heading into town and to the base, which is in the main harbour at the centre of town. The charter office is on a small pedestrian street just behind the harbour and staff are awaiting our arrival with cold mineral water and fresh fruit. We board our yacht for the week, a 2016 model Hanse 505, receiving a technical briefing from the local technician. The base manager then shares information about the local area and his tips for where to visit.

Volos Sailing Journal by Helen, Nautilus Yachting

Day 1 - Volos Port

The town of Volos itself is bustling with locals. A busy port town with sailing steeped in its history. The town’s symbol is of the Argos, the Argonauts legendary ship from 1600BC. We decide to enjoy our prime position in the harbour by taking in the promenade and exploring the town.

Once we are in the back streets we find a fantastic meze and tsipouro restaurant full of locals. We are the only tourists there and it is packed! Luckily, the staff squeeze us in and we enjoy never-ending courses of local seafood and traditional dishes alongside a couple of glasses of tsipouro (a strong traditional distilled Greek spirit). We discover most tsipouro tavernas involve simply ordering a drink and a selection of meze appears with it, so as long as you keep drinking, the meze will keep arriving! It is fantastic, very reasonably priced, and a great first night in Volos!

Volos Port

Day 2 - Agia Kyriakis

Our provisioning is delivered by the local supermarket so once it has been stowed we get underway. The sun is shining and we have glorious late season temperatures between 22-25 celsius with a steady breeze blowing. This area is known for its consistent winds as the bay is surrounded by hills and we can see Mount Pelion looming in the distance. The wind is blowing over our port stern so once we are outside the harbour walls, we get the sails out and enjoy a leisurely broad reach at 5 knots towards the middle of the Pagasetic gulf.

We sail to Pythos bay on the small island of Trikeri. There are just two other boats in the anchorage so we can happily drop the hook in the middle of the bay and swing freely. The water is aquamarine blue so in go the paddle boards and out come the snorkels. We enjoy a couple of hours of sunshine, paddleboarding, swimming and lunch before setting sail for the town of Agia Kyriakis. There is a small quay right in front of the two fish restaurants. It is a stern too mooring using the anchor and the restaurant staff are happy to help take our lines. They must have just received a good catch as octopus can be seen hanging around the veranda of the restaurant and the chef is on the end of the quay descaling a large fish. We stick a pin with our boat name in the next fish and pick a table right on the waterfront overlooking the channel. What a great way to start our trip around the Volos gulf.

Agia Kyriakis

Day 3 - Panormos, Skopelos

Today we are up with the sunshine to explore Agia Kyriakis. We find a couple of pretty beaches complete with palm umbrellas and fresh-water showers so we seize the opportunity of a morning swim. Walking around the harbour we discover a local products store selling honey from the nearby hills, perfect for our breakfast. Whilst out walking, a man comes out of his house to speak to us. He is English and has been living here for 20 years. Rarely hearing English voices in the area, he welcomes a chat and gives us some great tips for the best tsipouro restaurants in the area.

It seems a shame to leave this tiny port town but we are heading out to Skopelos island today. There is a lot of wind predicted so we are aiming for the bay of Panormos, known for its great shelter. Heading into the channel there is plenty of wind so we reef our sails and a series of tacks gets us set on a close haul towards Skopelos. We are prepared for larger swells between Skiathos and Skopelos, so have an exhilarating sail in between the islands.

Once in the shadow of Skopelos’ hills we can feel the wind start to drop and the sea start to calm as we navigate into the southeast side of the bay to our spot for the night. We drop anchor and take long line to the rocks ashore with a spring for good measure, knowing the winds are due to come in the night. There is a lovely sandy beach in the corner of Panormos so we tender over to enjoy the last of the sunshine on the sand and then make our way to one of the beach tavernas for dinner.

Panormos, Skopelos

Day 4 - Agnontas, Skopelos

As predicted, there is quite a lot of wind so we were glad of our long lines and spring line last night. We head carefully out of Panormos to see what the conditions are like. The swell is substantial and the winds are hitting 30 knots plus, so after getting the sails out we decide to have an easy day making our passage downwind on just a reefed genoa to the tiny village of Agnontas. The small quay should be sheltered from the winds and swell located at the bottom corner of Skopelos island.

After the daily ferry has departed we come alongside the quay where there are four other boats also sheltering from the wind. Once we are safely moored up the sun comes out and a tiny café behind the beach opens for an Aperol spritz in the sunshine. We are the only people on the beach for the afternoon as we enjoy the mid-20s temperatures in October and a hiatus from the wind.

There is a wonderful seafood restaurant at the end of the quay where we try some local octopus, homemade whipped taramasalata and other beautiful traditional dishes, alongside some excellent local wine.

Agnontas, Skopelos

Day 5 - Koukounaries, Skiathos

The wind has dropped a little today so after topping up the water tanks we set sail for the island of Skiathos. Once we are out of the shadow of the island of Skopelos, we need to reef the sails in 20-25 knots of wind blowing on the starboard beam which makes for a fabulous beam reach sail over to Skiathos.

We have heard how busy Koukounaries beach can be in the peak season but by sailing in October we are able to enjoy the bay minus the crowds. Koukounari is the Greek word for pine trees, which line the shore of this huge anchorage. We anchor on the sandy bottom with depths of 5-7m, sitting comfortably facing the beach. There are only three other boats in the bay and while we can see sun beds on the long expanse of sand, there are very few people - what a treat!

We take the dinghy ashore, tie up in the tiny harbour and then enjoy an ice cream on the quiet beach. Before the sun sets, we head for a walk around Lake Strofila, which sits just behind the beach, to see some of the local bird life and wetlands. We also find a reasonably sized supermarket to stock up on a few supplies.

Dinner tonight is a short walk to one of the roads behind the beach where we find a fantastic traditional taverna somewhat strangely called ‘The Big Bad Wolf’. We all tuck into hearty Stifado, Kleftiko and Moussaka enjoying some classic Greek hospitality from the manager.

Koukounaries, Skiathos

Day 6 - Palaio Trikeri

We are looking forward to returning to the tiny island of Trikeri but this time we will stay overnight in the port. This will be our last stop before heading back to Volos town. We sail down the channel towards the gulf with many other boats which all look to be heading in the same direction. The sails are set on a broad reach with one reef, hitting a steady 7.5-8 knots and managing the gusts coming over the hills. At the entrance to the gulf, we can see the little green island of Trikeri and a series of tacks gets us towards the port.

A restaurant has been recommended to us so we have booked a berth and a table for the evening since the owner has a small quay that holds just three boats. It’s a stern too with anchor on to the very end of his little quay. We have time for a walk before dinner so head up the hill towards the very top and the huge old monastery. There aren’t any vehicles on the island so it is lovely to just follow the paths amongst the olive trees until we’re at the top of the hill with beautiful views of the gulf. Then it’s back down the hill to the taverna for a fish dinner on the edge of the harbour.

Palaio Trikeri

Day 7 - Volos

It is time to return to base today. As we head out of Trikeri to go around the island and into the gulf, the wind immediately picks up and we have 20 knots blowing again so the sails come out and it's time for some fun. We take our time sailing in the gulf and enjoying a last sail before heading into port.

Anchoring on the northern side of the gulf, just outside of Volos, we have a late lunch and one last swim before heading inside the harbour walls. Once we have paid for our 20 litres of fuel (it has definitely been a week of non-stop sailing!) we navigate to the quay where base staff are waiting to assist with our mooring for the last time. It is a little windy still so the staff have got their work cut out for them, but with a little patience we are in safely and there is still time for one last G&T on board whilst watching a beautiful sunset over the harbour wall.

The western most Sporades island, Skiathos Island is a very traditional, laid back Greek island in the Northern Sporades. The island has 50km of beautiful beaches that make it one of the best tourist destinations for a seaside holiday in the country. One example - of 26 - is Koukounaries Beach which is a sandy beach and one of the most popular on the island with its pine forest.

Skiathos Town itself is a laid back affair with traditional Mediterranean architecture and is very appealing in its own right.

History (ancient and modern) has passed through the island but you won't find lots of Minoan or Athenian relics. It focuses more on the present, though at a pace where time almost stands still rather than blazing into the future. People have longer lifespans here and that's because of their diet and laid back culture thoughnot from high octane, high paced living.

Skiathos itself is widely held as one of the best places to begin a yacht charter in the Sporades. Thanks to its airport and ferry port (in nearby Loutraki Port) it is well connected to the rest of the world.

Explore Skiathos By Renting A Yacht

In the Northern Sporades Islands, Skiathos is a great place to sail off into the Northern Aegean. Skiathos Marina in Skiathos Port is a major charter yacht hub and is easily accessed from the island's airport.

A Skiathos yacht charter is great for exploring the Sporades archipelago by sailing yacht or motor yacht including nearby (and larger) Skopelos Island where the movie Mamma Mia was first set in Skopelos Town. To the NE is Alonnisos, a forested and hilly island with beautiful winding dirt roads that is so laid back it makes Skiathos look like Kos.

The strait between Alonnisos and nearby Kira Panagia is a national marine park where you will see a wide range of marine flora and fauna including the mediterranean monk seal and different turtle species.

Heading north toward Thessaloniki on the mainland there is also the Chalkidiki Peninsula. There are three 'fingers' to this peninsula and for those seeking to genuinely escape, we would recommend the Athos 'finger', the northernmost of the three where only Greek tourists tend to visit.

Do consider a trip on a yacht charter Skiathos to Pagasetic Gulf with Volos either the end point or part way of a longer-legged 7 day trip. You will get a mix of pace of life on this trip from the frenetic Volos Port to fishing villages where you wonder if time has touched them at all.

How To Get To Skiathos

Skiathos Airport

This is a holiday airport that only operates international flights between early May and October. It is a short hop from there to the marina.

Athens Airport

With considerably more airlines flying into the country's capital city you can catch a bus or taxi to Agios Konstantinos and then catch a ferry to Skiathos Port. This takes a few hours from end to end but given the quality of the luxury yacht charter holiday you're likely to have, could well be worth your time.

Marinas In Skiathos

Skiathos Marina:

This is the main yacht hire marina for the Sporades archipelago. A number of yacht charter companies have fleets there that include crewed yacht charter, a skippered and bareboat yacht charter of catamaran , monohull sailboat, motor yacht and luxury yachts .

Berth Characteristics:

Max Length 65m (213 Feet)

Max Draught 10m (32.8 Feet)

List of additional services: Water, shore power, WiFi, laundry, waste water collection, garbage and recycling, doctor's surgery, bar, restaurant, market, rent-a-car, ATM, shipyard

Suggested Sailing Routes From Skiathos

Being the main boat rental centre of the Sporades Skiathos Marina is the perfect place from which to explore these sleepy, laid back Greek islands on a sailing holiday. There are opportunities to go to the mainland too, both on a skippered or bareboat charter.

7 days - Sporades archipelago: This is more about getting ashore and exploring as against blasting out to sea on long legs. Alonnisos will be your port on Day 3 with stops in Loutraki on the same island and then Skopelos. After the rugged island of Allonisos you head out on a longer leg to Skyros. You then head across the Aegean back to Skiathos.

14 days - Skiathos to Volos one way: This is an opportunity to explore the Pagasetic Gulf, where the tale of Jason and the Argonauts is based in part - he built his trireme in Volos. Volos itself is a busy modern port - a bit of a shock to the system after a week of tiny fishing villages and unspoilt harbours. You will find some astoundingly beautiful, deserted beaches and safety from the Meltemi for much of the trip - with the exception of the leg across the Aegean Sea into the gulf.

Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Skiathos

The sailing season runs from mid May to mid October with July and August being the busiest months for yacht charter.

The sea is cooler at the beginning of the sailing season but there is rainfall in Spring. As the days lengthen you will still see green fields and flowers in May and the winds can be quite benign too.

Come September and October the seas are still like a warm bath.

Sailing Weather In Skiathos

In the Northern Aegean the climate has a fairly short, hot summer by comparison to more southerly areas of Greece.

April to mid June: There is rainfall and the temperatures build steadily from the mid-teens to the mid 20 degree C range. There are sometimes gentle southerly winds, thoough these are replaced by ever stronger N-NW Meltemi winds that are rarely hazardous but make for exciting sailing at times.

Late June-August: You'll be unlucky if you see any rain, though it could be welcome in the summer heat! Temperatures are from 30s with recent hot days exceeding 40. The northerly Meltemi winds can be fierce and can hit F7 for a solid few days.

September-October: The seas remain warm and the Meltemi eases. These months can be the best time of year to sailas the temperatures are often in the comfortable low to mid 20s. In mid-October the tourist season ends.

Frequently asked questions

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

Skiathos Marina is in Skiathos Town, just below the final approach of aircraft flying into Skiathos Airport.

May to June are the best times of year to go on a sailing vacation out of Skiathos thanks to the comfortable heat and gentler sailing conditions. July and August are hotter and the Meltemi winds can make for exciting sailing, but even so are the most popular months for a boat rental in Greece.

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

PlainSailing.com yacht and catamaran charter in Skiathos

Sailing from Skiathos

Skiathos has such incredible scenery and weather that it's a major tourist island for landlubbers, but it's also a phenomenal place to sail from. You can join the crowds by slickly mooring your yacht just off the heaving beaches, or completely escape them by heading off to nearby Skopelos (where Mamma Mia was filmed, and which is, incredibly, even more beautiful than Skiathos!) or further afield to the quiet fishing village of Patitiri or the super remote anchorage at Kira Panagia, where you'll share the bay with dolphins and seals.

There's almost always glorious sunshine from May to October, reliable winds, and it's easy to explore the rest of the Sporades from here - which makes it the perfect starting point for your sailing holiday! We can help you find and book your ideal yacht or catamaran, with one of our trusted Charter Partners - just get in touch or search in the pink box with live prices and availability !

Must See if you're Sailing from Skiathos

SAILING RATING:  Beginner / Intermediate - With easy line-of-sight navigation, clear waters and light winds it's a great start point for novice sailors most of the year - though conditions can be more challenging in July & August when the Meltemi comes to play. Peak season is July & August, but you can sail here from March to October.

MUST-SEE:  Our full suggested itinerary is further down the page, but we'd highly recommend taking in the stunning island of Skopelos (made famous by Mamma Mia ), watching the sunset from Loutraki , and getting away from it all at the quiet anchorage of Kira Panagia .

6-day Sailing Itinerary from Skiathos

Skiathos is a brilliant starting point for discovering the Sporades islands – and there is much to discover! There are 14 islands which make up the Sporades islands - it would be great to sail around them all inside a week, but given the distances involved, it's simply impossible, unless you sail all day, every day, from dusk till dawn. And that would leave little or no time for exploring the villages, beaches, bays, cliffs, monasteries, tavernas and bars along the way, and it wouldn't feel like much of a holiday!

Skiathos - 6 day sailing itinerary

The islands being reasonably close, it's not as easy as you think to get a decent amount of sailing miles in there, but this route clocks in at 108 nautical miles, which means an average of around 18 nM a day. Yachts and cats can travel at 5-6 knots, so that means you should be able to do the sailing in about four hours of meaningful sailing a day, which leaves plenty of time for leisurely meal-times, spending time exploring the things you find interesting at the start and end points each day, or spending time adventuring in bays and finding beaches on the way. You are on holiday, after all...

Loutraki

If you look to your port side as you leave Skiathos marina, it possible to see our destination in the distance on the nearest island because it’s only a few miles away in a straight line – however, we’re on a sailing holiday, and we want to get some sailing in and get to grips with the boat, so we’re going the long way around, basically circumnavigating the whole island of Skiathos.

We'll start by heading South-west, keeping the coast on your starboard side, as we work our way round. As well as practicing sailing at pretty much all the points of sail, you'll be able to get more of an idea about what Skiathos is all about. You'll pass a multitude of beaches, including the ever-popular Koukounaries beach on the South-west, the party beach of Big banana beach and the neighbouring nudist Little banana beach on the West coast, and the beautiful Lalaria beach on the North of the island. Stop a while at one of the smaller beaches if you fancy, or if things are getting hot.

From Lalaria beach, we’re going to hop across due East to Skopelos island, and the small fishing village of Loutraki. Loutraki is a beautiful little village, and the local beach was made famous by being the shooting location for the recent Mamma Mia film. There’s a couple of tavernas here (or more up the hill in the nearby village of Glossa), but the best thing to do here is to settle down and watch the sun setting over the island of Skiathos. Glorious.

Skopelos

To get there, we’re sailing North from Loutraki to the northernmost tip of Skopelos island, likely reaching against the prevailing wind. Once you’re round the top of the island, it’s a single tack and a broad reach to follow the coastline South-east to Skopelos Town, which you’ll find nestled in the bottom half of the island. One the way you’ll pass plenty enough bays and beaches, which might be worth a look – the most popular are Agios Ioannis and Glysteri.

Pulling into Skopelos Town might well be the highlight of your trip, with the town surrounding the marina like a giant amphitheatre, so get your camera handy. Now is also a good time to try to remember to take a group shot of your crew!

Once focussed on fishing and growing vines and olives, nowadays, Skopelos is principally a tourist town, with people flocking here from around the world, and some arguing that it is the most beautiful island in the Mediterranean. That said, it attracts a different crowd to those in Skiathos, and you’ll find it a relaxing place to be, and it’s said that people actually walk slower here. There's a good range of shops and services, and it's worth stocking up because we're going remote for the next couple of days.

Kira Panagia

From Skopelos, we’re heading north-east, into the prevailing wind, and basically sailing along the length of the West side of Alonissos island, then onwards to Kira Panagia. You should be beating your way up the wind, and by the end of the day you should have a well-trained crew, and you’ll understand the boat so much that you’ll be communicating about tacks by just nodding at each other.

The best and most sheltered anchorage on the island of Kira Panagia is on the North of the island, where there’s a narrow channel that leads into a large bay area, which has plenty of space for throwing down the anchor, and good holding conditions. Pay attention to your charts and plotter when sailing the narrow channel inwards as there are some shallow reefs along one side.

Kira Panagia is part of the Alonissos national marine park, and it is a very tranquil place to rest awhile. The only building on the whole island is a monastery. It was originally built in the 16th century and renovated in 2017, but there has been something on that site for much longer (there are graves outside which date back to 500 AD), and there are a couple of signs that a couple of Roman and ancient Greek buildings were once built on the island.

Kalimakia

From the bay on the South of Gioura, head South-west and head around the south side of Kira Panagia, enjoying the wilderness of it all. Continue South-west, running with the prevailing wind, to the Eastern side of Alonissos, and our destination, Kalamakia, is halfway down on your starboard side.

Kalamakia is a quiet fishing village with a population of just 66 people which has some amazing fish restaurants along the waterfront, a small beach, and a pretty view overlooking the channel to nearby Peristera.

Patitiri

Peristera is like a nature reserve. It’s completely uninhabited (save for a few shepherds who tend to their flock every once in a while), and overrun with wildlife. The bay you're in should have monk seals swimming and flopping around, plus plenty of birds (look out for Falcons), sea-turtles and it's possible to spot dolphins in the Alonissos national marine park (if you haven't already). The island is also famous for an ancient shipwreck that was found opposite the town of Steni Vela which dates back to 500 BC – it’s an ancient Greek cargo ship which was heading to Skopelos with 1,500 vases of wine from Halkidiki. You need scuba gear to see it properly, but it's only 30m below, and the crystal-clear waters mean you can spot something down there.

From Peristera, we’re heading to the picture-postcard Patitiri, further south-west down the coast of Alonissos. The prevailing wind should be behind you as you run with the wind down the straight, and it's only a short sail away.

You'll find the pretty town of Patitiri nestled in between the pine trees. It’s a relatively modern village that was only built in 1965 – people moved here after a nearby town was destroyed in an earthquake. It's a delightful place to sit, reflect and people watch, and the people here don't seem to have a care in the world. As well as a few Tavernas, there's a couple of bakeries and a mini-market, and a small beach. The marina tends to fill up quickly in peak season, but you can also anchor in the south side of the bay.

Skiathos

Over the past few days we’ve gone from an uninhabited island to a small village (Kalamakia) to a big village (Patitiri) and now it’s time to return to the sights and sounds of a town (Skiathos). Skiathos is obviously still a world away from being a big city, but it will feel big and busy after the last few days, and you won’t be able to believe the constant noise.

From Patitiri the journey is a simple hop around the South side of Skopelos island, and up to Skiathos. You could also go to Skopelos and over the northern side of it, but going around on the south side of the island means that we’ll have completed a circumnavigation of all four of the main islands we have visited on this itinerary, and seen all there is to see on each island. The first half of the leg will see you running with the prevailing wind (bonus points for throwing in a goose-wing, by the way), before reaching across the wind to Skiathos when you get beyond Skopelos island. Work your way back into the marina, returning the yacht to the vague area you picked her up from, make the lines good, shut down the engines, and we’re done. High-five the rest of the crew for doing a great job!

There's no fuel berth in Skiathos marina – usually a mobile tanker will come around at some point, but check how your charter operator would like you to refuel. Someone will come along and inspect the boat (often with a diver to look at the hull), but you’ll still be able to sleep on-board tonight, before checking-out and returning to dry land proper in the morning.

If you've not had chance to explore Skiathos then now is the time to get out there. It's a lively place to be all week, but Fridays are particularly boisterous affairs as a lot of the package operators (both for sailing and for beach holidays) have changeover day on Saturday, so this will be a lot of people's last night. Have a safe trip home, thanks for the memories, and we'll count on you to be at PlainSailing.com soon – to start to plan your next great adventure!

Sailing Conditions

Greece Sailing - Wind Conditions

The Meltemi winds tend to arrive for 2-3 days at a time, and when they do arrive, they can be anywhere from Force 5 to Force 8 (hence needing to check the weather before heading out – don’t just assume it will be a perfect day for sailing if you don’t appreciate this sort of drama!). They're strongest in August.

There’s not really any such thing as prevailing winds in winter, and weather systems are as likely to arrive from the tropical regions to the South of the Med as they are from the cold mountain passes to the North. But the temperature is still warm, and sailing can still be pleasant.

Marina Details - Skiathos Marina

Skiathos marina is located just five minutes walk away from the old town of Skiathos, which is a popular tourist town offering everything a sailor could wish for: places to pick up supplies, a myriad of bars and restaurants, and lively nightlife.

If your flights land on a Friday or Sunday, you'll be looking for a place to stay on dry land before you start or after you finish your holiday. When we're in town, we like the Babis Hotel , Skiathos Somnia or (if the boss is paying!) Skiathos Luxury Living .

7 Day Skiathos Charter Itinerary - Skiathos to Skiathos

Ideal for Summer Season

If you're considering a social distancing yacht charter as a result of Coronavirus this summer, Greece is the perfect destination for you. With its thousands of islands, countless tiny beaches and huge number of secluded coves spread out across its shores, Greece is ideal for self-isolation, and the Sporades islands are unspoilt and largely untouched by mainstream tourism.

If you're thinking about booking a  social distancing yacht charter  and you're looking to explore the islands of Greece, Skiathos is the perfect place to start.

The island of Skiathos sits in the heart of the Sporades islands, and is home to an international airport that can accommodate private jets and chartered flights.

The most common choice for charterers is Skiathos Airport (IATA) which also operates commercial flights to a selection of international destinations. From Skiathos airport, a private car will whisk you to the marina - a mere ten-minute journey end to end. It’s here that you’ll meet your charter yacht .

Discover the region's peaceful beaches

Spend your first night on board your yacht and wake up refreshed and ready to begin your Greece superyacht vacation in Skiathos.

Enjoy breakfast underway as you cruise around Skiathos admiring its picture-perfect shoreline. Known for its emerald bays and pine-coated landscapes, the island has no end of natural beauty, and it also boasts some blissful beaches.

Among the best is Lalaria Beach, which is only accessible by boat. Don your snorkelling gear for some underwater exploration; there’s a rock arch at one end of the beach that’s teeming with fish. Dry off on deck, then cruise round to Elia Beach for a stroll along the fine-as-flour sand as the sun sets.

See the famous sights of Skopelos

Enjoy breakfast on your yacht as you set course for Skopelos, an untouched oasis of picture-perfect landscapes which are famous for being the filming location of Mamma Mia!

On the north-eastern side of the island you’ll encounter rugged landscapes and crystal-clear shallow sea. Drop anchor opposite Agios Ioannis and take a tender across to the Chapel of St. John, the shooting location for the famous Mamma Mia! wedding finale.  If you arrive early you’ll beat the crowds and have the site to yourself; take the time to walk the 200 steps that lead to the little chapel at the top of the hill.

Have lunch on the yacht as you cruise around to the south side of the island. You’ll spot Kastani Beach, another famous Mamma Mia! filming site, which is usually popular among tourists, locals and yacht-goers alike. Opposite the beach is Dasia, a tiny island that’s perfect for some on-shore discovery and in-water fun, thanks to a network of sea caves. Round off the day with a Mamma Mia themed dining extravaganza back on board your yacht, and spend your evening singing along to the hits of Abba.

Swim with dolphins in Alonissos Distance: 10 nm*

Swim with dolphins in Alonissos

Cruise over to Alonissos in the morning, enjoying the short journey while lying out on the deck of your yacht.

Alonissos is home to the largest marine reserve of its kind in the Mediterranean , and it acts as a haven for the rarely-seen Mediterranean monk seals. Yachts aren’t allowed to drop anchor here, so jump into the tender and grab your flippers and snorkelling mask. You can expect to spot dolphins, loggerhead turtles and over 300 species of fish inhabiting these waters.

After some underwater exploration, head over to the pretty fishing village of Steni Vala and stretch your legs with a walk along one of the untouched beaches. The sea here is as clear and smooth as polished glass, and the air is fresh and heady with the scent of maquis. Feeling calm and relaxed, you'll step back on board your yacht for a sunset aperitif.

Scuba dive at Patitiri Distance: 8 nm*

Scuba dive at Patitiri

With two shipwrecks and an abundance of sea caves to explore, Patitiri is a scuba-diver’s paradise.

The major shipwreck of Patitiri is the Shipwreck of Peristera. Half-sunk in the shallow waters, its rusted hull is clearly visible jutting out above the water. But there’s a second, more secret shipwreck in the strait between Alonissos and Peristera, and this is known to be the most important merchant wreck from the ancient world. When it sunk, it was carrying a huge amount of wine and amphorae.

After a morning of scuba-diving, enjoy a relaxed afternoon on deck. Stretch out and soak up the sun, or take the water toys out for a spin.

Experience peace and solitude at Kira Panagia Distance: 20 nm*

Experience peace and solitude at Kira Panagia

Set a few miles adrift from Alonissos, Kira Panagia is a lesser-explored gem of the Sporades. Its off-the-beaten-track location means it's only accessible by sea, and those who visit as part of a private yacht charter will be rewarded with secluded anchorages and mesmerising vistas.

Covered in olive groves and red-domed buildings, Kira Panagia looks like it's been lifted from a glossy Greek postcard. It is virtually uninhabited so be prepared, as there's no facilities or amenities to speak of.

Enjoy breakfast in the bay of Agios Petros, a calm little inlet which serves as a popular mooring spot for yachts during the height of summer. The Aegean waters have been gently warmed by the sun, so you can dive straight in, swim up to to shore and get lost in the densely forested terrain. Hikers are in for a treat, as there's plenty of trails through the island's hilly interior.

Yacht Charter Skiathos

Yacht Charter Skiathos

Skiathos, which remained isolated and agrarian until the early 1970s, is today one of Greece ’s most cosmopolitan islands. The population of Skiathos according to the last census is about 6000 inhabitants.

Skiathos Town, the island’s major settlement and port, lies on the southeast coast. The town is a major tourist center. Opposite the waterfront via a short causeway lies tiny and inviting Bourtzi Islet. With some 65 beaches to choose from, the best, if most oversubscribed in the Sporades archipelago, beach-hopping on Skiathos can become a full-time occupation. There are over fifty strands (plus a few more on satellite islets), still not enough to absorb legions of visitors that the island hosts during summer. The most popular beaches are west of town along 12 kilometers of coastal highway. Koukounaries, Megali Ammos, Vassilias, Lalaria  and Achladias are the most popular also crowded and developed.

Skiathos was the birthplace of famous 19th-century Greek novelist and short-story writer Alexandros Papadiamanti, whose writings draw upon the hard lives of the islanders he grew up with. His humble 1860 house is now a charming museum with books, paintings and old photos.

An excursion to the Kastro, the old fortress-capital on the northernmost point of the island, east of Lalaria beach is a must visit in Skiathos. The Kastro was built in a remote and spectacular site in the 16th century, when the island was overrun by the Turks. It was abandoned shortly after the War of Independence, when such fortifications were no longer necessary.

The islets Tsougria, Tsougriaki, Maragos, Arkos, Troulonisi and Aspronisi surround the island and belongs to municipality of Skiathos. Skiathos is the first island of the Sporades that we meet with Volos and Agios Konstantinos as a starting point. After Skiathos island we meet Skopelos island and the beautiful , full of green Alonnisos are very close. Skyros island lies a little further without lacking the beauty of Sporades Archipelago of course. The geographical coordinates of Skiathos are 39°09’55.8″N 23°29’21.5″E in the Aegean Sea.

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Skiathos

At Yachting.Rent, we offer both sailing boats and catamarans for your unforgettable journey in the Aegean Sea, around the picturesque island of Skiathos. Each type of vessel has unique advantages and the choice often depends on your personal preferences, sailing skills, and the kind of experience you seek.

A sailing boat is perfect for those who appreciate the classic sailing experience. You’ll enjoy the intimate atmosphere and close interaction with the water elements. With its narrower build, the sailing boat is perfect for exploring Skiathos’s hidden coves and tiny beaches that might be difficult to reach on a larger vessel.

On the other hand, catamarans are renowned for their stability and space. Offering wider decks and larger living areas, they provide more comfort and are an excellent choice for family trips or groups of friends. Moreover, due to their dual-hull structure, catamarans are perfect for anchoring in shallow waters, which are abundant around the Skiathos coastline.

No matter whether you choose a sailing boat or a catamaran, you can expect a well-equipped and safe vessel. Our boats come with full navigation equipment, safety gear, and a set of amenities to make your sailing adventure comfortable and carefree.

The Yachting.Rent team is always on hand to assist you in making the right choice, ensuring that you pick the vessel that best fits your needs and preferences. Let us help you set sail for an incredible journey in Skiathos, exploring its stunning coastline and soaking in the beauty of the Aegean Sea.

Skiathos

Yacht Charter Skiathos

Skiathos town and harbour is the buzzing capital of Skiathos Island of the Sporades group. Located on the southeastern part of the island, Skiathos Town was rebuilt in 1830 on the ruins of the old abandoned town dating back to 800BC. It is now a major tourist centre with a busy, noisy waterfront and backstreets full of galleries and shops.

The pine-covered islet of Bourtzi is between the two harbours in a well- protected bay. During the summer there is a cultural festival inside the Bourtzi fortress.

Skiathos Town nightlife scene is well-renowned and in the summer young Greeks from all over descend to celebrate in the summer clubs and bars. There are also a number of fine restaurants along the quay.

Skiathos Town is the main charter base for sailing in the Sporades islands . From here there are a variety of boats to rent and go sailing around Skiathos and the rest of the islands.

Skiathos Town is well connected by air to Greek and European cities, with the international airport only 2 km from the harbour. There are also frequent ferries from Volos and Agios Konstantinos, on the mainland, which go on to Skopelos and Alonissos.

Sailing conditions

Sailing from Skiathos is pleasurable and easy with prevailing winds being friendly, especially when sailing the southern route to the rest of the Sporades. Skiathos and the Sporades Islands offer many natural harbours for your boat charter and a range of beautiful beaches to visit. Directly across from Skiathos Town are the lovely little islets of Maragos, Tsougkrias and Tsougriaki, which are worth a stop.

Beaches in Skiathos

You’ll find the most spectacular beaches in Greece on the island of Skiathos. The shores covered with pine trees have smooth sand and crystal clear water. The section of the shore on the southern side of the island is well-equipped with deck chairs and water sports centres. The beaches on the northern side are outlying, thus, naturists love visiting them. You can rent a boat on the island, so exploring the area becomes a real adventure.

Koukounaries beach:

Koukounaries is the most famous at the same time the most crowded beach on the island. It’s known for the especially fine white sand and fragrant pine forests. It’s also considered the most untouched and protected section of the shore of the Mediterranean Sea. The beautiful dark blue water provides true refreshment. Since the shore has good infrastructure, it offers several water sports, chairs, umbrellas, bars, and diners. The district is full of restaurants, tavernas and hotel units. The local buses go to the capital every thirty minutes. They developed the area and the beach for ecotourism. The environment and fauna here are strictly protected.

Lalaria beach:

Lalaria is only accessible by boats coming from the port of the capital. It’s on the northeastern apex of the island and has unbelievable scenery of huge white rocks emerging from the clear deep-blue water. Left to the white sandy beach there’s a rock, which creates a natural bridge between the sand and the sea. The amazing Blue and Dark caves are right in front of Lalaria. You should visit them with a yacht charter.

Banana beach:

There’s a two-pronged road from Koukounaries to a banana-shaped sandy gulf. It’s an excellent, well-equipped beach providing water sports opportunities. The other branch of the road continues until the small gulf called Little Banana. Here you’ll find a nudist beach separated by the other by a huge rock. This section is quieter than its neighbour with azure blue water and smooth sand.

Kanapitsa beach:

The wonderful Kanapitsa is only 2 km from the city centre. This beach is ideal for a family vacation by the sea. The best thing about it is that it’s never overcrowded and has a pleasant breeze all year. For the sake of the adventurous, there’s a watersports school here, which offers numerous sports opportunities such as surfing, diving, water skiing, and jet skiing. The water is clean and perfect for swimming. The sunset is absolutely amazing and enthralling, perfect for a romantic evening.

Main sights in Skiathos

You’ll find the harmony of interesting cultural and natural attractions on the island of Skiathos. Among historical sights, there are churches, monasteries, and other monuments. Most of them are either remnants of the Byzantine era or the Venetian times. There’s a lot to see in the city centre, as well as nearby in the outskirts. If you wish to take a romantic evening walk on the island, visit the narrow, pebbly streets of the old town. Here you’ll find traditional chateaus with typical local characteristics. Don’t forget to visit the castle of Bourtz, the old medieval town, and the Papadiamantis house in the city of Skiathos. However, you shouldn’t forget about natural sights either. Famous sea caves are waiting for you to discover them, such as Skotini (dark) cave and Galazia (blue) cave.

Sailing in Skiathos: explore the Sporades!

Skiathos, an island located in a fairly calm environment, is very popular among sailors who [...]

The Greek coast has a Mediterranean climate . The air of the country is very clean and dry from spring to early autumn. There’s a lot of sunshine, while the amount of rain usually decreases from the west to the east. In summer, we almost never see any clouds in the sky. Rain is practically an unknown guest in the summer months. The sea can heat up to 23-25 °C from June to August. Even in October, it’s still 23 °C. The area of Greece is constantly windy, these winds, however, are always changing. The wind that dominates summer months is called Meltemi . From June, it blows from the northwest and the northeast. It reaches its full strength, 5 to 8 on the Beaufort scale, in July and August.

The sea-wind comes in late September or early October, which blows from the southeast and the southwest. It’s a specifically southern wind, that dominates mostly in spring and fall with a strength of 2 to 4. Due to Greece’s typical winds, it’s most rewarding to plan a sailing route from the south to the north in spring and autumn, and from the north to the south in summer. The waving is preferable compared to the Croatian archipelago since there’s a greater distance between the Greek islands. The current flows counterclockwise in the Eastern Mediterranean Basin, and northward along the Turkish coast. The water flows southward on the Eastern Greek coasts, but from the west side of the Peloponnese Peninsula northern current dominates.

Renting a boat with or without a skipper?

When considering a boat rental in Skiathos, you can choose whether to rent with or without a skipper. A skipper is a qualified professional with expertise in navigating the local waters, ensuring your safety throughout your boat trip. They are familiar with the best routes, potential hazards, and local regulations, giving you peace of mind. A skipper's local knowledge can be invaluable, as they can recommend the best anchorages, hidden gems, and must-visit spots in Skiathos. They can help you make the most of your time and provide insights into the local culture and attractions. By having a skipper onboard, you can fully relax and enjoy the journey without the responsibilities of navigation and boat handling. The skipper takes care of the technical aspects, allowing you to focus on creating unforgettable memories with your companions.

Renting a boat without a skipper gives you complete freedom and privacy to explore Skiathos at your own pace. You can create your itinerary and discover secluded spots without any time constraints. If you have sailing experience or want to challenge yourself, renting without a skipper allows you to take the helm and navigate the waters independently. It's an opportunity to put your skills to the test and enhance your sailing abilities. Renting without a skipper means you assume full responsibility for the safety of the boat, yourself, and your group. It's crucial to adhere to safety guidelines, weather conditions, and local rules and regulations.

These events showcase the island's rich cultural traditions, featuring parades, music, and vibrant displays of Greek heritage. The high season in Skiathos runs from July to August when the island is busiest with tourists. During this period, boat charters and accommodations prices tend to be higher. How to Charter a Boat

If you want to sail off into the sunset, at least temporarily, you need to understand how to get aboard first.

An illustration of the bow of a boat with three women with flowing hair and cocktails looking over a man playing a guitar and then off in the water, four other vacationers are sunbathing on inner tubes.

By Lauren Sloss

This time of year, it’s an inevitable thought: Life would be that much better out on the water. Specifically, on a boat.

Even if you have neither a boat nor boating experience, it’s never been easier to make your nautical dreams come true — whether you want a day trip on your local lake or a fully staffed multiday voyage in a far-flung locale. Here are the initial questions that will help you plan an adventure on the water.

Whom are you traveling with?

Thinking about the size and dynamic of your group is an important first step, even if you are simply going on a day trip. Will children be on board? How old? What about elderly parents?

Dan Lockyer, the chief commercial officer of Dream Yacht Worldwide , strongly encourages travelers to determine group size — and, ideally, get people committed — before booking.

“The location that you want to go to, the time of year that you want to go, the type of boat that you want will entirely depend on the makeup of the group that you’re sailing with,” Mr. Lockyer said.

Do you want to captain, or do you want a captain?

Different charter companies specialize in certain locations, types of boats, itineraries and services. Some companies offer the opportunity for a “bareboat” charter, in which you rent the boat and take on the navigation and provisioning yourself, while others exclusively offer fully staffed options, including a captain and a cook.

If you want to captain the boat yourself, almost all outfits require some kind of proof of sailing or boating experience, often in line with local regulations.

Edward King, 45, an executive at a streaming company based in San Francisco, is experienced in sailing the city’s waterways. But on vacation, he said he would prefer to let a captain and crew take the lead.

Mr. King said he appreciates a captain who is familiar with both the local waters — “they’ll know how to avoid sailing into a certain sandbar,” he said, — as well as the local attractions.

In contrast, Matt Blake, 38, a software engineer based in Oakland, Calif., was eager to grow his sailing experience during a recent trip to La Paz, Mexico, with his fiancée. He hired a captain but made clear that the captain was there to help and teach.

Where do you want to go?

“Do you want something that’s more culturally oriented? Nature oriented? An adventure trip?” asked Mary Curry, the voyage product director of Adventure Life , which offers small group tours and private trips on land and on water around the world.

That answer can determine your destination. Popular cruising grounds include the Caribbean, Croatia, Alaska and French Polynesia, but the sky — or the sea — is really the limit. For help narrowing your focus, travel advisers often have relationships with charter companies or outfits around the world, and sailing publications offer recommendations.

Kyla Malkani, who has had experience with charters working as a destination wedding planner, recommends consulting the concierge of waterfront hotels, particularly for short-term or day rentals.

“A lot of times they will have either their own fleet or they will have some sort of connection at a dock,” said Ms. Malkani, 37, who is based in Washington, D.C., and is currently working as a content creator and freelance event planner.

What kind of boat?

Where you want to travel and for how long will likely determine the kinds of boats that are available to you. Crucial at this point, too, is an understanding of the boat’s layout and amenities.

“You definitely want to choose the right kind of boat,” said Ms. Malkani. “If you want more adventure, a sailboat is nice. If you’re looking for a luxury party environment, a yacht is best. And if you’re looking for something smooth, for older people or with kids, a catamaran is great.”

David Barclay is a luxury travel adviser who has also chartered boats for his own vacations.

“You want to match what the travelers want to what the boat offers,” he said.

Perhaps a group of friends might not mind a catamaran with functional but not luxurious marine bathrooms, but a multigenerational group might prefer more high-touch amenities.

When should I book?

Often, charter trips are once-in-a-lifetime experiences that require a great deal of advanced planning.

“You may have a specific place you want to go, or a specific time of year you want to travel,” said Mr. Barclay. “And some places just aren’t good at certain times of year.”

Naturally, you don’t want to be at sea in the Caribbean during hurricane season, or in the Mediterranean during winter storms. But you also might want to avoid peak cruising seasons, too.

The first three weeks of August are quite popular, said Mr. Lockyer. “If you have some flexibility and can travel in early July, you’ll get the same sort of great weather, a greater selection of boats and the anchorages won’t be as crowded.”

How much does it cost?

Charter costs are incredibly variable, dependent on all of the factors coming into play: your boat type and size, your destination, your group size, the amount of crew you’d like and the amenities on board. That said, costs could range anywhere from $2,000 for a day on a sailboat to hundreds of thousands of dollars for a multiday mega-yacht charter. Have a budget in mind when beginning your research process.

What if I didn’t plan far in advance?

While advanced planning is encouraged, and often necessary for bigger boat trips, it’s possible to book a boat last-minute.

Boatsetter , an Airbnb-like platform for boats, is a good resource for last-minute bookings, especially for day trips, and even has an Instant Book option for down-to-the-wire bookings.

“If it’s for a special event, or around major holidays, you may want to book a month or two in advance. But for general bookings, you can find options within a week or two,” said Kim Koditek, Boatsetter’s head of brand strategy and communications, of the company’s overnight offerings, which appear on their platform under the luxury yacht charters category .

Ms. Malkani has used Boatsetter for some of her charters, most of which have been booked with a specific goal in mind.
