Disappointing

I first stayed at the Thistle at Port Dickson about 8 years ago and was generally pleased with the experience. I visited again about 5 years ago and noted that the hotel was starting to get a bit rundown in many ways. Nevertheless the hotel's child friendliness and proximity to KL make it ideal for a weekend break from the city, so when I saw some discounted room rates available during MATTA Fair I decided to give it another go - aiming for a brief 2 night stay over 21/22 New Year's. After arriving on the 31st Dec I was completely shocked. I know the pandemic has devastated the hotel industry, but quite clearly the owners of the Thistle at Port Dickson have stopped investing any money in anything other than basic maintenance at the hotel whatsoever. When we arrived our room was not ready, so we took the opportunity to take a look around and it was evident that this hotel, which charges 4 and 5* room rates, is barely functioning at a 2* level these days. You would expect some basic cleanliness and decent furniture in the main lobby at the very least, but some of the tables and chairs available there looked desperately battered and old with tabletops looking like they hadn't even been wiped down with a wet cloth in days. As we walked around the hotel and grounds we discovered that pretty much everything that... As we walked around the hotel and grounds we discovered that pretty much everything that made the hotel a pleasant spot was closed. Kids pool - closed. Seaside pool - closed. Seaside bar - closed. Kids games room - closed. Kids movie theatre - closed. Chinoise Chinese Restaurant - closed. Main pool poolside bar - closed. Poolside games/activities - None. Indeed the only way to purchase an alcoholic drink at the hotel these days is either through room service (at an exorbitant rate) or to visit the hotel shop where you can buy small cans of Tiger for RM10 and Guinness for RM12. I guess this is why many families quite clearly had brought their own drinks in with them. The few facilities that were open appeared to be very understaffed, with poolside tables being left uncleared for long periods and as a result attracting lots of flies and other insects. Quite honestly I was actually going to ask for my money to be refunded before we even got allocated a room, but only changed my mind due to the fact that the receptionist (a Filipino called John) was so super friendly and accommodating, and because the room itself was well maintained and clean. In the end my two kids (age 5 and 6) did have a good time over the two days, primarily because the main pool which thankfully was still open (albeit for some reason now closed between 12 and 3pm every day) is just so good that it kept them pretty much occupied (and of course they were not paying for it all). To be fair the staff working at the hotel were all very helpful, friendly and nice, I just felt sorry for them struggling to do their best when it appears the owner is basically trying to squeeze as much cash out of the place while they can. Quite honestly I felt scammed paying the equivalent of RM400 per night even though it was a discounted rate (which included a breakfast buffet and a sea view) as I know there are many better options out there. In terms of the food, it was standard buffet fair, perfectly passable for a standard 2/3* hotel, but not what you would expect from a hotel which advertises its undiscounted room rates at RM750 per night. Again, I would like to say that I am not picking on the staff or even management working there, I think they were doing an admirable job in the circumstances, but there was clearly too few of them, working with sub standard facilities (probably with minimal training) in a hotel which has quite clearly seen many better days and which appears to being milked for every drop by its owners, based on its past reputation. It is very sad, because this hotel really has the potential to offer families a great mini-break experience if some investment was made in it and its staff, but as it stands now I don't think we will ever visit again. Nothing could be done on the first day, as we got our room around 6pm. The Check In Time really needs to be pushed earlier instead of 4pm especially if they are going to make people wait that long for a room. Due to the lateness, they allowed us to Check Out before 1pm. We got the Deluxe Garden View (Vaccination Promo) for Three Days and Two Nights. The King Size Bedroom and Bathroom were clean, and the AC was functioning properly. However, the fridge smelled like Durians and the TV was on full static mode. We were too tired to complain to get another room. The Breakfast could be improved, not to say it was bad but it was just mild nothing special. The Pool and Private Beach were the two best things about this hotel. Hands down. Although, I do hope they fix the swing at the Private Beach as it is lopsided on one end.

The service has drop and a bit run down. Used to be a very nice hotel with good service. Check-In on 29 - 31 Dec 2021 ( 2 night stay ). Booked a family room cost almost RM1,200 but really not worth it with the service provided. Upon check in, there is a lot of guest at the lobby waiting for check in. Need to Q up for the check in, was given a number. After registration was told the room not ready yet and can come back in 1 hour later. Have to go to reception up to 5 times to begged for the room. Finally almost 7pm only can check in to the room. A lot of guess already lost their patient and demand to speak to the Manager. One Asssistant Manager even having argument with the guess saying the housekeeping is still cleaning the rooms. Even under pressure, the hotel staffs / Manager should not have a fight with customers. By the time check in, the pool already closed and the kids don't get to swim at the pool. Was promised be given compensation like late check out. But come to check out date, was told the latest only before 2pm. Can't extend any longer. Really feel cheated by the empty promised. Breakfast is suck with limited choices. Nobody control the crowd. Look like they are having manpower issue. As i notice during this 2 days stay, they are having same issue during check in. The rooms is not ready till late evening. This really spoil the Hotel name in long run. Good Luck with this kind of service. Really sad, such a nice hotel end up like this. The management really need to look into this urgently to solve the Housekeeping / Manpower issue.

We’ve been coming here for the past 4 years for a short family break and was thoroughly disappointed at how much the standard had dropped! Was made to wait 4 hours past check-in time for room to be ready. Buffet breakfast was not worth the money either as choices were limited, not adequately replenished and no SOP!! People bunched up together queuing for hot food, chefs getting orders wrong- looks like they’ve lost a lot of their good experienced staff during the pandemic. I genuinely hope management looks into making improvements soon as the standard of this once much loved place is going down terribly.

Ok, let me put it this way, it was a nice hotel, the room was big, not carpeted (makes my feet cold), AC works well. The porch is not that clean way due to birds poop on the floor and on the handle. However, maybe due to this pandemic, check in was quite slow (but the staffs really works well to handle it). 4 pm for check in time and 11 am for check out is quite in a rush. They should consider the time. Bed was big and comfy, pool is huge. A la carte dinner was quite expensive and the food is just ok. However, buffet breakfast is great.

I stayed with my family on 16th -17th December - room 326..overall i think this is the best hotel to stay in Port Dickson. Everything from the room upgrade to Pool View and the staffs that assisted me from check in process ( lady with hijab), the bellman who assisted me during check in and check out, the engineering staff, the room service guy, the gentleman frm pool, the guy from Gift Store is all friendly and I can see that they tried their level best to make the guests happy. I wish that everyone give them ( the hoteliers) and the management a chance to redeem back their glory after this pandemic.Hotel is among those businesses which really struggle to climb back after this pandemic so pls give them a chance. But i really touched with their kindness and even they are extremely busy and tired, each one of them that i encounter with ,assisted me with SMILE..i 100% recommend this hotel to stay in PD and I wish all the best to Thistle Port Dickson. I wish i remember all the staffs name that I encounter with because for me they are the aset of this hotel and im thankful for their kindness and assistance.Thank you Thistle PD!

Thistle Port Dickson Resort

  • Full Review
  • On the beach, with jet ski and banana boat rides
  • Big outdoor pool area with splash zone, waterslides, and a hot tub
  • Large modern rooms with private balconies
  • Nine-hole golf course and two tennis courts
  • Kids' club, Lego play rooms, game rooms, and outdoor games

  • Poolside snack bar and a cocktail bar
  • Large ballrooms, meeting rooms, and team building camp
  • Full-service spa and fitness center
  • Free Wi-Fi throughout
  • In an isolated area far from central Port Dickson
  • Some areas need renovation
  • Not all rooms have sea views
  • Loud music can be a constant around the pool

Bottom Line

The Thistle Port Dickson Resort is an upscale beachfront property far from town, but packed with family-friendly amenities like game rooms, multiple outdoor pools, and waterslides. Its vast garden grounds also have a nine-hole golf course, tennis courts, giant yard games, and a team building camp, making it popular with kids and business travelers alike. There are several dining options, including Italian and Chinese restaurants, but ambience on outdoor terraces can be dampened by loud party music. All the rooms are large and have furnished private balconies, but not all have sea views. It's worth comparing this property with the four-pearl Avillion Port Dickson , which rivals the family-friendly perks here and also has luxurious water villas.

Oyster Hotel Review

Upscale beachfront resort with kid-friendly amenities and corporate events.

thistle port dickson haunted

Renovated in 2009, the Thistle Port Dickson Resort is starting to show wear in some areas, but that doesn't diminish the fun atmosphere. It might have the most kid-friendly amenities of all the resorts in Port Dickson , with multiple waterslides, yard games, and 88 acres of garden grounds to explore. Walkways and jogging paths meander around landscaped lawns, connecting wide palm-lined green spaces with the beachfront. Inside, there's a wide lobby with polished stone floors, high ceilings, and picture windows overlooking rows of fountains -- perhaps catering more toward the hotel's business travelers and visiting team-building groups.

Far from town, but right on the beach and near some regional attractions

The Thistle Port Dickson Resort is right on the beach, about a 23-minute drive from central Port Dickson , with its marina and seafood restaurants. Since the resort is set back on its own massive private grounds, there isn't much within walking distance, though a cluster of local restaurants and a supermarket are within a two-minute drive (also within walking distance down the coastal expressway). Regional attractions like the Tanjung Tuan Forest Reserve, Rachardo Lighthouse, and the popular Port Dickson Ostrich Farm are all within a seven-minute drive. Expect a 75-minute drive to Kuala Lumpur and the airport.

Large rooms with private furnished balconies

thistle port dickson haunted

The resort's 251 rooms have tiled floors and a modern decor with neutral walls and dark wood accents. Standard rooms are on the large side at 446 square feet, with either a king-size or two twin-size beds, small desks, and window seats beside sliding balcony doors. The furnished private balconies have garden views, while upgraded rooms face the sea. Free Wi-Fi comes standard along with flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and electric kettles. The bathrooms have average tiled walk-in showers. Suites add separate soaking tubs and have parquet wood floors and separate living rooms with curved love seats, small tables, and armchairs. Indigo Suites have a warmer earth-toned decor with orange and copper accents, along with open bathrooms and in-room soaking tubs, catering to romantic couples.

Beach, outdoor pools and waterslides, full spa, kids' club, golf course, multiple restaurants, and extensive event facilities

thistle port dickson haunted

Water sports like boating, banana boat rides, and jet skis are available at the hotel's beach, along with more involved outings on fishing speedboats. Off the beach, 88 acres of garden grounds provide for plenty of walking paths and sunbathing lawns, along with numerous yard games from croquet to giant chess and checkers. There's also a nine-hole golf course and two outdoor tennis courts. The massive outdoor pool area has a big freeform pool with an adjacent hot tub and a side pool with a waterslide built into faux rock. A second dedicated kids' pool area has a splash zone that has interactive water features and two more waterslides that spill into a lower pool. Other kid-friendly facilities include a game room with pool tables and ping-pong, a movie room, and a kids' club with Lego-themed play rooms. For adults, the full-service spa has separate men's and women's saunas, along with a fitness center that's equipped with treadmills and weight trainers.

Dining options range from the typical buffet restaurant with an outdoor terrace, to a Chinese restaurant, and an Italian restaurant overlooking the pool. There's also a poolside snack bar, and a cocktail bar near the beach. Extensive event facilities include two ballrooms and 12 meeting rooms, some with views over the Straits of Malacca, and the resort runs a team building camp with certified trainers.

Moscow parks – leisure, nature and historical

Moscow is the most green megapolis in the world. There are over a hundred parks and green spaces like gardens, squares and boulevards. You will definitely bump into a few of them wherever you go. Whether you are interested in memorial, historic parks, parks of wildlife or you just want to have a calm break from the speedy city life – city parks have something special for everyone.

Moscow leisure parks

The leisure Moscow parks are undoubtedly the most popular and famous with the locals and travelers. Today such parks provide a great number of exciting entertainments for Muscovites and city guests, adults and children.

The Gorky Park

The Gorky Park

Gorky Park opened in 1928 and was the first holiday park in the Soviet Union with playgrounds, a sports stadium, exhibition halls and attractions for kids. Today it has a fresh, vibrant appearance. The park features bike rental stations, a comfortable business area with Wi-Fi, an outdoor movie theatre and a greenhouse where you can buy fresh greens such as basil and lettuce. To contemplate the sky and the stars, go to the observatory and look through the telescope while listening to fascinating stories from astronomers. Enjoy many sports in the park: volleyball, handball, football or a peaceful jog around the beautiful surroundings.

Zaryadye Park

Zaryadye Park

Opened in September 2017, Zaryadye is the youngest on our list. Located just a few minutes away from Red Square, it includes various activities like the floating bridge with its thin V-form extension, an ice cave, also concert hall and an amphitheater. The entire territory of the park was divided into four zones of Russia: forest, steppe, tundra, and the floodplains.

Neskuchny Sad

thistle port dickson haunted

By walking along the Moskva River’s bank from the Gorky Park towards Vorobievy Gory (Sparrow Hills) you’ll reach Neskuchny Sad («Not Boring» garden), a wonderful place in the Moscow center, one of Moscow’s oldest parks, charming slice of wildlife. The park mostly consists of pristine forest, dotted with old summer pavilions, ponds and quaint little stone bridges. There are a lot of opportunities for different activities lots of children playground, a ping-pong and chess clubs, football fields and tennis courts, horse riding, tree climbing and having rest in one of the nice cafes.

Hermitage Garden

Hermitage Garden has always been known as an amusement, entertainment center with theatres, shows, cafes, summer pavilions, pergolas since 1830. Shalyapin, Sobinov, Nezhdanova – great Russian opera singers starred on the garden stage. Famous Russian composer Rakhmaninov conducted the orchestra. Sara Bernar, Maria Yermolova, outstanding actresses, played in the open air performances. Tolstoy and Lenin had a stroll in the garden. So lots of celebrities from different epoques liked it a lot and spent their time in Hermitage Garden. You can find here three theatres in the garden: Hermitage, Sphere and New Opera. Aptekarsky Ogorod (Apothecary Garden)

Aptekarsky Ogorod (Apothecary Garden) is one of the oldest gardens in Moscow. It was founded in the XVIII century by Peter the First (great Russian emperor). A larch that he planted himself still grows in the garden, so it’s more than 250 years old. At the time of its foundation, it was a garden with herbs and medicinal plants and was used as an educational center for doctors. Today there are the orangery with its tropical palms, the carp pond, and the immense trees that dot the landscape and turn wonderful golden shades in the autumn. Several restaurants and cafes work here making it a very nice spot for relaxation no matter what season it is. You can book a special tour or join the guided excursion group.

Serebyany Bor (Silver Forest) is a famous pine forest in the west of Moscow. The park has 230 forms of plant life, and is also home to watersports complex, providing a lot of activities for visitors. The layout of Serebryany Bor is unusual, as it is located on an artificial island between a meander in the Moscow River and a channel. There is an artificial lake, the Deep Gulf and picturesque Bezdonnoe (Bottomless) Lake in the depths of the forest. Serebryany Bor’s beaches are the cleanest in the city and very popular among Muscovites. On weekends it is difficult to find a free spot here, especially because a whole range of services are offered to visitors, from simple deckchairs to catamaran and yacht rides. Driving is prohibited on the territory of the island so be ready to use trolleybus to reach the entrance.

The garden’s collection is turned into botanical expositions, made with use of modern receptions of landscape architecture. Here you can see a tree nursery, a shadow garden, hothouse complex, collection of flowers, a rosary, exposition of coastal plants, garden of continuous blossoming, Japanese garden and expositions of cultural plants and natural flora plants. The biggest part of Garden is the Tree nursery occupying the space of 75 hectares. About 2 thousand wood plants grow here. Another big exposition of the Garden is nature Flora, divided into six botanic-geographical collections: European part of Russia, Caucuses, Central Asia, Siberia and Far East. Moscow historic parks

Kolomenskoye

Kolomenskoe

Kolomenskoye Museum and Park

The chief attraction of the park is undoubtedly the stone Church of the Ascension of the Lord. It was constructed in 1532 by order of Tsar Vasily III to commemorate the birth of his son and heir, Ivan the Terrible. But there is a lot more to see in the park: the pretty Church of the Icon of Our Lady of Kazan – with its bright azure domes and plenty of gold. Further into the park there is a charming Church of the Beheading of St John the Baptist, built by Ivan the Terrible to mark his coronation.

Kuskovo

Kuskovo Park

Kuskovo Park is one of the oldest country estates in Moscow. It was given to General Sheremetev by Peter the Great in 1715, but was left to fall into neglect before being plundered by Napoleon’s troops in 1812. Nowadays the estate has been restored to its former glory and is a good example of Russian 18th Century imperial architecture. The palace is a fine and rare example of wooden neoclassicism. It was completed in 1775, and the rich interiors remain unchanged since 1779. It includes a room hung with exclusive exquisite Flemish tapestries, an abundance of silk wallpaper and an impressive collection of 18th century European and Russian paintings. The palace looks onto the lake, which is surrounded by smaller pavilions: pretty Italian, Dutch and Swiss Cottages, Blank’s Hermitage and the old Orangery, where the State Ceramics Museum is located now, an extensive and absorbing collection of porcelain from the 18th century to the present day. On the other side of the lake is a large wood popular with local cyclists and joggers.

Thistle Port Dickson is haunted? No!

Some reviews on the Internet refer the hotel as haunted. I personally feel there's nothing eerie about the place. Perhaps corridors are a bit dark. Hotel is a bit old and rooms are not very clean especially the bathroom. (Dust on the phone and shower screen door have permanent water streak marks) Children get to play in the pool (with slides) and there is a small and old arcade game room (RM$1 per token), table tennis tables, lego play room and a video room with movies at scheduled timings. Hotel staff are polite and it didn't take long to check in/out. It's a nice place to chill out and its good value for money. Hope that the cleanliness can be improved when I return next time. Note - Breakfast can be v crowded as hotel is also catered to large tour groups More

Went here for a short getaway for our anniversary. They have a great environment and atmosphere going for them. But could do better in maintaining these. Their beach bar cumulus probably has one of the best sunset views..but it's badly maintained. If you plan to take a walk around the hotel..be prepared to carry mosquito repellant with you..the plus side is the privacy you get and of course the service. Wanted them to do some special preparations for our anniversary and they did great! Shout out to the reception girl Nurain and Hafzi for preparing everything and surprising my fiancee.. if you're looking for a private vacation with your loved one, thistle is where you should be. They can surely do better in terms of creating more excitement and hype for the hotel.. if you're looking to have dinner, go to Weng Yein seafood which is 5 minutes away from the hotel. Great seafood at reasonable rates.

Great for short family escapes. We particularly loved the pool. The children playrooms were also nice but does need cleanup. The rooms were clean and spacious but furniture was old. The bed was huge....and i mean really huge as they parked two twin beds together. We booked two rooms during the promo period and the price was very fair. It was worth the price paid.

1. This is the fist time we need to queue up to check-in. It took us 30 minutes, from the queue to complete the check-in. Previously check-in was hustle free. This time - only 3 tables opened for the long queue! 2. There is no welcome drink. After hours of driving and queuing up to check -in, on a hot day, there is no cold drink to drench our thirst. 3. Hot water in bathroom not hot. Low water pressure for basin. 4. The beach is dirty. Since this is more or less a private beach, it doesn't make sense not to clean it. 5. One of the Side table missing, whether is deliberately- we do not know. 6 Lights not working at day bed. 7. Water dripped from ventilation opening ceiling at corridor.

  • Cleanliness

We stayed 4 nights in June 2016. What's good: - Mostly friendly helpful staff - Generally a good standard of room cleaning, clean towels, bed sheets etc - The bed is huge! All rooms are two large single mattresses pushed together. Large enough for 2 adults and 2 small children. What can be improved: - Rooms are dated and old. - Rooms & bathrooms have mold. Some rooms have mold on the ceiling, some on the walls. Almost all the bathrooms we saw had poor tile grout and hence lots of mold. - Flies in many of the rooms! - The morning buffet spread was standard but the volume of people was clearly overwhelming for the staff. Large plates & juice glasses ran out and not replenished for quite sometime. Very slow turnover of empty tables. Coffee was absolutely horrid, it was so weak every morning numerous people could be heard complaining.
